We already have The Lonely Door for when the portal is an actual door.

The universe is under no obligation to make sense to us.^^ Would The Lonely Door cover doors that are built into houses? If yes, the name is quite misleading. If no, where would such cases◊ go?
I don't think it does. My main point is that Portal Door isn't actually door-exclusive, unlike The Lonely Door, so it's redundant with Cool Gate, whose examples don't have to be inherently cool-looking (according to the description, the name is because the fact that they exist is what's cool). Even the description of Portal Door says it "can be a Cool Gate", while Cool Gate calls Portal Door a subtrope.
Edit:
From Portal Door's description:
From Cool Gate's description:
Which implies that Portal Door can be "any kind of gate" and not just a standard-looking door, which is what Cool Gate already is. Sounds like a Distinction Without a Difference.
Edit: While Cool Gate's wick count isn't too much higher than Portal Door's, the former was launched in 2008 while the latter was launched in 2011. I suppose we could redefine Portal Door to be door-exclusive, but the wick check shows more "any kind of gate" examples than "non-lonely door" examples, though the wick check also says evidence is needed for whether the doors are mundane-looking. For example, I checked and the first "door as portal" wick in the wick check (on Bar Full of Aliens) doesn't actually say what the door/gate looks like.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Bumping this since it was pushed down the list by more active threads.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.I think there is merit in just fixing the relationship between both tropes (make them sister tropes) and clean up the examples. The difference being:
- Portal Door: A (non-standalone) door acting as a portal besides its primary purpose as a regular door.
- Cool Gate: Any non-door-style portal (practically any opening that doesn't look like it ever had another use outside portalling) not falling in any other related trope like Portal Book or Portal Pool
Optionally, look for rename options for Cool Gate. Coolness is no qualifier.

I'm fine with rewriting Portal Door to be about the use of doors as portals; I'm assuming that would make it a supertrope to The Lonely Door.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass. There's already a super/sub relationship here. There's no need to make Cool Gate exclude any category of portals. I wouldn't be opposed to renaming Cool Gate, if evidence can be collected that Cool Gate has been misused. I do agree with making Portal Door a supertrope to The Lonely Door.
- Cool Gate: all portals
- Portal Door: all doors that function as portals
- The Lonely Door: a door that functions as a portal, but isn't attached to any walls.
I'm also against changing Cool Gate's definition, and I also don't think changing its name should be a priority unless someone can show that there's a problem with that trope.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Keeping Cool Gate as a supertrope is fine by me as well.
Then the task is to get the definition for Portal Door right and clean up pages that use both terms interchangeably. There is considerable overlap. Potential candidates:

Went ahead and made a crowner with the proposal of doors as portals. I also added an option to rename in case others think it would be necessary.
Edit: Added the option to merge with Cool Gate, since I forgot that originally.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Crowner just says Rename. Rename Portal Door?

I put "What should be done with Portal Door?" in the header, so yes. Either way, I tweaked the option to include the trope name in its own text.

Crown Description:
What should be done with Portal Door? Not all options are not mutually exclusive, but some are.
From the Image Pickin' thread on the trope.
Most people think this is a Cool Gate duplicate, while I think it's "Doors as Teleporters" with an unclear description.
In either case, this has issues and needs to be fixed, for the Image Pickin' to be resolved.
