"Sacré bleu" is a go-to stereotypical French phrase for a lot of American kids' shows so I doubt it's an issue for censors.
I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe. While I get ready to look through some other Radar pages, here's my proposed writeup for a Demographically Inappropriate Humor page for Robots, which I brought up recently (no big deal about the late response, by the way!). Let me know if there's anything I should change before I make the page; I've rewritten or otherwise made edits to several examples for clarity.
I tried to get them in approximate chronological order, but it has been a while since I've seen the movie, so I don't know what the exact order was. I'm not sure if it matters too much, but examples can be rearranged if necessary.
- From the beginning of the film, when Rodney is being built:
- When Herb (Rodney's father) gets home, his wife Lydia tells him, "Oh, I'm sorry, honey, you missed the delivery... but it's okay. Making the baby's the fun part." For added measure, sultry saxophone music starts playing.
- After Rodney is built, his parents comment on an unseen "extra piece" that they forgot to attach. His dad says, "Oh yeah, they always put in an extra... We did want a boy, right?", indicating that the extra piece is actually a penis.
- The hobo robot at the train station has a sign that says "Got screwed" with a real screw in place of the word "screw".
- Fender tries to get some mail from the mailbox, and the mailbox hits Fender for sleeping with his sister; "I recognize the handwriting."
- When Rodney asks "Who wants to get fixed?" (as in, repaired) to a group of robots, a robotic dog then covers up its crotch while whimpering.
- While repairing Fender, Rodney asks about the last time Fender was "oiled".
Fender: Well, can't really answer that with my kid sister right here...
- Madame Gasket tells Ratchet to "grow some bolts" in one scene, the robot equivalent of "grow some balls".
- At one point, there's a bathroom where the men's bathroom is represented by a plug, and the women's bathroom is represented by a socket. This also doubles as a Genius Bonus, given that plugs and sockets are sometimes referred to as "male" and "female" connectors, respectively.
- It's implied that Bigweld Really Gets Around, judging by what's strongly suggested to be a love-making pad in his limousine.
- After Fender smacks Tim, Tim lands upside down on his hat, causing his robe to fall down. The nudity is only shown offscreen, but a crowd gasps and a woman Faints in Shock at the sight.
- In one scene, a receptionist recommends that her friend uses a "Brazilian wax" like she does.
Since the Power Rangers Samurai page didn't have any valid examples when I went through it, I'd thought I'd take a look at the other Power Rangers series with a radar page: Power Rangers RPM. (The show is rated TV Y7-FV like most Power Ranger series)
- The first episode has Flynn referring to a damaged Grinder as a "Piece of scrap!", but with his accent it's hard to make out the 'S'.
- Even the closed captions can't make out the 'S' and it reads "Piece of crap!"
don't think this counts since he didn't say crap, that is just merely a subtitle error. - Summer and Dillon are about to have their Last Kiss being trapped in a burning factory. They move in on each other, grip each other tight, and... the Whale Zord blows water all over the factory, leaving the two soaking wet.
looking way too into the scene, the joke is that they got interrupted before they could kiss, not that they got "wet"
- Only by facing a vacuum cleaner monster could Ranger Red get away with the line: "Suck on this!"
maybe? he is fighting a vacuum monster
- Don't forget Ziggy teleporting into Dr K's chair with the Teen Genius getting a very... exhilarated face after she finds herself in his lap.
again looking way too into this
- Also, Scott using a baby stroller to fight some mooks with the baby still in it.
isn't really too inappropriate or hidden at all, also the baby never gets hurt nor scared the entire time, it's shown not to affect the baby.
- And when Flynn was a Man in a Kilt in "Ranger Yellow Part 2", some Grinders tried to peek under it.
i think this is just Naked People are Funny (but with no nudity)
- In the episode "If Venjix Won", Ziggy tries to cheer up Dr. K. He says to her, "I know exactly what I'm going to give you for your birthday. Here, hold my flashlight."
he says this because he puts on a shadow puppet show for Dr. K, not for any sexual reason.
- Listen carefully to the words in the BGM that plays after Ziggy gets in Dillon's car in "The Road to Corinth": "Way down in Georgia, the girls are fine / With legs so long, they'll blow your mind." This is a kid's show, right?
this could count, I'm not sure if the song is made for the show or a stock song though
- In "Brother's Keeper", Summer casually asks, "How's the happy couple?" That "happy couple" being Dillon and Scott chained together.
I don't think a mild sarcastic comment is too adult, there's nothing too adult about marriage, even gay marriage (granted this show is from 2009 so it wasn't legalized in America)
- In "Ranger Yellow" Flynn is wearing a Kilt with nothing under it, and... he kept his morpher in the front of his kilt... though it may have had in a Sporran, it was still rather suggestive in the way it was presented.
entry argues with itself, and in the episode he clearly does have it in a Sporran.
Ironically this page doesn't mention the most notable example, in the episode And Action (which is a behind the scenes episode) they show a clip of Scott/Eka Darville hitting Dr. K's door, and he clearly says "Fuck" as he does so. Having an uncensored F-Bomb (thought there is background music playing over it) in a TV Y7 show might be one of the most shocking radar examples of all time, even higher rated shows can't have that.
Not very familiar with Power Rangers, but I think that your judgments are fairly accurate. Based on what I know about ratings, and going off the entries you brought up, I have a few things I'd like to add:
- "Suck on this" sounds a little more like Demographically Inappropriate Humor.
- Those song lyrics don't really seem that inappropriate for a kids' show, especially if it's an existing song simply being used as background music. However, I could be wrong.
- Regarding the "scrap/crap" one, the word "crap" is typically allowed on a TV-Y7 rating, among other mild profanity such as "hell", damn", or "ass" (though I'm pretty sure exact network rules on this vary a bit, and I'm also relatively certain that they only allow for infrequent uses of these words). Also, it's true that subtitle errors aren't Radar; it has to be something that intentionally makes it in there.
- You're right that a few of the entries seem to be reading too much into stuff that's an Accidental Innuendo at worst.
The example you mentioned of an uncensored use of "fuck" certainly counts as Getting Crap Past the Radar, though. The word "fuck" pretty much guarantees that a show will get at least a TV-14 rating, if not a TV-MA rating, and you're correct that even shows with these higher age ratings will typically have stronger profanity censored when they air on TV.
Cold turkey's getting stale. Tonight I'm eating crow.Haven't added this example because of some fact checking concerns. This seems like it is probably counts — the radar exists, the creators deliberately set out to break a rule they knew about beforehand, and the content directly violates it — but does anyone have a solid citation on the specific FCC prohibition against condoms here? This one is weird because the FCC indecency rules are vague (to the point where the Supreme Court struck down part of them in 2010 for being too vague), but they are actual rules with actual enforcement (which is why the Supreme Court heard the case in the first place).
- For several years, a collective of subversive artists called the GALA Committee inserted politically charged art into the primetime soap opera Melrose Place with the cooperation of a few sympathetic members of the crew but without creator Aaron Spelling's knowledge. One episode, "Run, Billy, Run," featured a set of sheets with a prominent condom pattern. In set director Deborah Siegel's words, the collective "had to break the law to do it" because at the time, FCC regulations did not allow unrolled condoms to be shown on TV. Artist Jon La Pointe, part of the collective behind it, compared seeing the scene actually air on TV to witnessing the moon landing.
Looks good to me.
I found this on the Internet Archive, which gives additional credibility.
Ukrainian Red CrossGonna take a look at Radar.Hotel Transylvania (which, for some reason, isn't crosswicked anywhere). It covers moments from the first three Hotel Transylvania films, and again has several examples mentioning "if these characters were humans, this moment wouldn't have made it into the movie" - as I've previously stated with a few other pages I brought up, I can see where this is coming from, but I'm not sure it really counts as Radar.
- A witch uses a sponge to clean up a puddle in the lobby. Said sponge has a face with eyeballs and a mouth, and it makes happy noises as it absorbs a puddle of werewolf urine. Yes, a urophiliac sponge, in a kid's movie.
- When Dracula is carrying Jonathan to the storage closet, squished between Drac and the backpack, Jonathan says something that sounds like "I can't f**king breathe under here." It's amazing how that one got past the radar, muffled though it was. Or he just said "It's kind of funky to breathe under here."
- Jonathan puts his hand through a female skeleton's rib cage, much to her indignation. If that lady wasn't a skeleton, those scenes wouldn't have made it into the movie.
- Jonathan asks Mavis if she's naked while she's in her bat form. In front of her dad, no less!
- Two bed bugs, who only appear as small black specs on-screen, have reserved a regular-sized honeymoon suite that Drac and Jonathan accidentally stumble into and apologetically leave.
- Being invisible, though it causes him much strife, allows Griffin to get away with doing things no family-rated movie would allow, actually. In fact, he's a living, walking getting crap past the radar!
- During the scene at the pool, Wayne pulls down Griffin's swimming trunks and blames it on his kids; Griffin gets completely embarrassed and says the pool water was cold when he got in before running off. If he wasn't invisible that scene would've been removed or altered.
- There's also him powdering his butt later on, which ends up being one of the most suggestive things done by a guy who spends the entire movie virtually naked.
- In the second film, there was a super suggestive scene of Dracula apparently twisting his nipples.
- Dracula mentions people going "bat-poop" if they find out about Jonathan.
- At one point, Vlad compares the wig Jonathan is wearing to disguise the fact that he is human to his "grandmother's boobies."
- Vlad's address starts with the numbers 666.
- Murray thinks that Frank's cousin has stitches in "all the right places".
My Comments: Eating the Eye Candy jokes are usually okay for a PG-rated movie.
- When trying to speak to Ericka, the nervous Drac comes out with "Your neck wrappings are in a nice coffin, would you like to see my parts?".
- Drac shields his eyes with his hands when seeing Ericka take off her outer layers before she goes into the cavern to retrieve the artifact. However she's already wearing her swimming suit underneath.
It's been a while since I've seen any of the movies, so I'm unsure how accurate my judgments are here.
Cold turkey's getting stale. Tonight I'm eating crow.Having a clip with the potential "fuck" in question would be helpful.
Oissu!Just checked; captions say it's "It's kind of funky to breathe under here". It does sounds a lot like "fucking", but I replayed it numerous times and I'm certain it's not that. Cut the page and move the entries to more fitting tropes.
back lolAlright - I've sent the page to the Cut List, and I'll be moving certain examples to Demographically Inappropriate Humor in particular.
Does Accidental Innuendo allow examples where a mishearing makes the line sound questionable? I'm wondering if that could be a place for the "It's kind of funky to breathe under here" / "I can't fucking breathe under here" example.
Cold turkey's getting stale. Tonight I'm eating crow.Gonna look through Radar.Scooby Doo - worth a mention that this page is referring to the 2002 live-action film. I remember seeing this movie a while ago, and it definitely has a lot of raunchy or otherwise off-color jokes (in part because it was originally supposed to have been rated PG-13), so a lot of this can probably be moved to Demographically Inappropriate Humor.
- An oral sex joke didn't get past the radar and was removed to lower from an R rating to a PG.
- Shaggy is talking about a banana split, He refers to Fred as "The Big Banana". Also, Fred's reaction after that.
- Shaggy mentions that "But you don't need to know what Voulez-vous coucher avec moi? means to love that song!" Kinda justified in that it is in a song, but it still means "Do you want to sleep with me?" If Shaggy really doesn't know what it means, then it's even more justified, since he really doesn't know what he's saying. However, it was removed in the book.
- Velma says "crap" once she sees Daphne at the airport.
- Daphne tells the crew she plans to open a can of "Chinese whoopass".
- Daphne heavily implies that the Luna Ghost kept trying to grope her. It was altered to bad breath in the book.
- Also the scene right after the gang has broken up with Scooby and Shaggy hanging out at a beach, in their van, laughing, whilst smoke comes out of the van's roof. It turns out they're really just making eggplant burgers. The burgers in question feature some rather unusual condiments including chocolate and hot sauce. Also, "Pass the Dutchie" is blaring in the background.
- Fred explains to Velma that he is a man of substance and "dorky chicks like [Velma] turn [Fred] on".
- Related to that smoke, when Mary Jane first introduces herself, Shaggy enthusiastically notes that she has his favorite name. (Mary Jane is a nickname for marijuana.)
- Shaggy and Scooby also won't go anywhere with "Hydrocolonic/hydrochronic" in the name, but that's like, for a totally different reason, man.
- Fred said to Scooby at the Spooky Hotel that it was the most embarrassing moment since he cleaned his beans at Don Knotts' Christmas party.
- When Shaggy finds Fred after the monsters attack, Fred drops "biatch". Subtitles render that as "bitch".
- Right before the gang kicks Scrappy out of the group, he outright tells Fred, "You don't have the scrote for this job, Pally!"
- Velma got drunk after she had too much of a tiki drink while talking to Brad about Scrappy getting kicked out. A deleted scene had her do a drunken rendition of "Can't Take My Eyes of You" (sexual gyrating included) for Fred and Daphne, only for Mr. Mondavarious to reveal that her drinks were non-alcoholic.
- Pretty much every woman, including Daphne and Velma, wears skimpy clothing. It makes sense considering that most of the film takes place at a tropical island.
- Shaggy tells Fred, "You're a freaking protoplasmic head!"
- At the very end, Scrappy nearly calls Mystery Inc. a group of "meddling sons of bitches". The last word was obviously not heard.
- This awkward line, spoken by Fred while in Daphne's body: "Hey... I can look at myself naked!" Immediately afterwards, he looks down the front of her dress and grins. Later, Fred-in-Daphne's-body can be seen in the background, groping her own body. Also, Shaggy-in-Velma's body can be seen trying to look up her own skirt.
- Fred's soul told Shaggy that someone spiked his root beer last night and wanted to be talked down.
- In a scene from a trailer, Fred asks Scooby/actually Scrappy "Did somebody spike your dog bowl?"
It's possible that this film may warrant its own DIH subpage as well.
Cold turkey's getting stale. Tonight I'm eating crow.I think to Christmas party joke is supposed to mean he either pooped his pants or farted in front of everyone, so just Toilet Humor.
In honor of Akira ToriyamaYeah, the Scooby Doo jokes are, at worst, PG jokes in a PG movie. Move to other tropes if possible, and cut.
Ukrainian Red CrossAh, that makes sense - I was guessing it was probably some Unusual Euphemism I haven't heard of yet.
I'll be doing so shortly.
Cold turkey's getting stale. Tonight I'm eating crow.I wanted to take a look at the radar page for KaBlam!: (Keep in mind this is a Y7 rated show)
- This could very well be a coincidence, but Henry & June were also the names of a controversial writer and his sexually adventurous wife.
The entry even admits this can be a coincidence, it sounds like a shoehorn.
- In an Action League Now short, Stinky Diver got eaten by a dog. The episode ended with a cliffhanger. In the next part, Stinky is alive, and gives hints that he came out the other end.
DIH and/or Toliet Humor
- At one point, Stinky Diver got away with calling all of *NSYNC "tossers".
I think this one might be valid, or Did Not Do the Bloody Research
- The Flesh is literally naked. Fortunately, Barbie Doll Anatomy is in full effect, but imagine if he was a real person and not a modified Conan the Barbarian action figure...
Again Barbie Dolls are for ages 3+, they aren't showing actual nudity.
- In the episode "Mother nature Bowl-Off", there's a scene when Loopy and Mother Nature are bowling that shows the score card with insults written on it. One clearly says, "Loopy SUX".
- It's not that it's bad, but the censors (and some parents) don't like that.
I think you can use "sucks" in this context on a show of this rating. - The episode "Loopy And The Lost Voice" features a scene with Loopy going to a Lost-And-Found store to test out some temporary voices, having lost her own voice from shouting too much. The voice devices she tries unsettlingly look like sleeveless fleshlights.
This doesn't sound like an intentional reference to fleshlights.
- In a Sniz and Fondue short, Fondue wants to be a fashion designer and shows Sniz his designs. One of them shows a woman ferret (which is what everyone in the short is) with a fish on each breast. And no, this one wasn't televised on Nicktoons. Not even by itself.
If this wasn't televised then it didn't get past the radar.
- In one "Race Rabbit" short, there's a button on the control panel that says "Sexy Music."
Unsure here
- In some Prometheus and Bob shorts, if you listen closely you can clearly hear Prometheus say "What the hell" and "Oh my God" a few times.
Also kinda unsure too
Edited by BocchiTheRock on Dec 20th 2023 at 3:00:19 PM
"Tosser" is almost certainly a case of Did Not Do the Bloody Research.
I feel like network censors are sometimes OK with "sexy" in children's shows, but I would still say that "sexy music" counts in TV-Y7.
"Oh my God" and "What the Hell" do not.
Ukrainian Red CrossThis is on Recap.Molly Of Denali Big Gathering Shorts Block 2
- Getting Crap Past the Radar: Merna claims her competition nickname is "Churnin' Merna." One can't help but wonder if it was actually her husband who gave her the nickname. Of course, it flies right over Randall's head, since this is a kids' show after all.
Molly of Denali is rated TV-Y, as are the online shorts. I don't know if this is even supposed to be a sexual reference. Maybe I'm just naive, but since when did "churn" have a sexual connotation?
We are the best friends, we stand as one. Whatever life may bring, we are never alone.I have never heard "churn" in a sexual context, and I'm inclined to believe it's actually about churning given the context is apparently about making food.
I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.Never heard of it before either. Even if it was a thing, it would be closer to something like Accidental Innuendo.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessAlso haven't heard of "churn" being used in a sexual context
"Leftover items still have value!"The only time I've seen "churn" even remotely being used as an innuendo is a moment in the music video for "Amish Paradise", where it was a mild Something Else Also Rises joke. (Even so, the joke wasn't so much about the word "churn", but what he sorta looked like he was doing.)
So, yeah, cut.
Cold turkey's getting stale. Tonight I'm eating crow.I noticed that Batman Assault On Arkham has a radar page, but this movie is PG 13 and not aimed at children, so I don't think either of these count: (Note that sexual content is also present as a descriptor)
- Harley offers to show Deadshot some "tight" places while moving her chest around.
- Captain Boomerang explains that if she's "giving out" she should be looking his way. Harley disgustedly tells him to scooch his "Boomer-wang" to King Shark. Shark's reply to this is to threaten to bite it off.
Edited by BocchiTheRock on Jan 15th 2024 at 2:28:31 PM
I haven't actually seen the movie, but I agree that neither of those seem at all amiss for a PG-13 rating. To quote the Ruder and Cruder entry on the movie's main page:
I don't think that a movie with the aforementioned mature content would have any issues with a few suggestive comments. Part of me wonders if that page may have been created out of a "What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?" reaction (since it's an animated superhero film) or something similar to that; upon looking at the page history, there was also a now-deleted general example mentioning that the film is much Darker and Edgier / Hotter and Sexier / Bloodier and Gorier than previous Batman animated works.
So, I agree with the decision to cut it.
Cold turkey's getting stale. Tonight I'm eating crow.I agree to cut that. PG-13 films are allowed to have some pretty crude sex references, actually, and these don't jump out as being worse than certain other PG-13 films.

Okay, yeah, that's understandable. I was gonna question if "sacre bleu" can have more innocent meanings as well, given my limited knowledge of French, and that's good to know
Cold turkey's getting stale. Tonight I'm eating crow.
