  • Adaptation Dye-Job:
    • In some merchandise and Tezuka's official artwork, Unico's mane is occasionally colored red/orange. In 70s and 80s era merchandise, his tail and mane is rainbow colored. Sometimes his pupils is colored blue like his appearance in the Sanrio Movies instead of orange like the manga and some of Tezuka's official illustrations
    • In Unico's first animated appearance in Unico Black Cloud and White Feathers, his mane is colored black instead of pink.
    • In the manga, his Mighty Unicorn Form kept the same fur and mane color as his regular appearance. In the Sanrio Movies and a few post-Tezuka projects, his body and mane was colored bright white.
    • In Unico: Awakening, his pupils are light grey as seen in Gurihiru's closeup shot of him.
  • All-Loving Hero: Unico is very compassionate and kind towards others, including a few villains and antagonists he faces in a few storylines in the manga.

    • During the climax of Unico in the Island of Magic, he apologizes to Kuruku for ramming into his chest since he didn't expect that special attack to badly injure him.
  • Author Avatar: Unico appears to be a representation of Osamu Tezuka himself due to his optimistic and idealistic beliefs. He also gets easily emotional at times which Tezuka himself has expressed openly during his lifetime.
  • Badass Adorable: While Unico is considered to be one of Osamu Tezuka's cutest characters, he isn't afraid of using his own horn as a weapon or tool. His powers actually starts increasing the more love and kindness his friends and others start expressing.
  • Bearer of Bad News: In the manga, after befriending Piro/Marusu and his mother. Unico decides to leave his home to wander around a desert where he witnesses Piro's mother dying after badly wounded by Oedipus for solving her riddle. As he's listening to her dying words, he promises to make sure Piro becomes a strong and brave sphinx. When he returns to Piro's home, he breaks the news that his mother was killed and tries his best to comfort him as the young sphinx is mourning her death.
  • Break the Cutie:
    • In "Unico and Solitude" and the first act of the 1981 movie, he starts crying his heart out when initially realizes he's very lonely. In the manga, he starts crying after Beezle ends up destroying his homemade house just for fun.
    • Near the end of Unico in the Island of Magic, after he witnesses Cherry getting turned into a lifeless puppet by Kuruku. Unico begins crying over her lifeless body as we hear her voice of kindness and love echoing in his head.
  • But Now I Must Go: While he rarely gets a chance to say farewell to his friends after saving the day in all incarnations. In the "A Hometown Visit" chapter, Unico gets a chance to notify his sister that the West Wind will arrive soon and won't be returning home. He mentions that he will forgot Corn and his other family members soon and to make sure Corn tells his mother he said hello. Corn takes this news surprisingly well and decides to give him a Goodbye kiss before the West Wind arrives.
  • The Cutie: With his big eyes and sweet personality, Unico is absolutely adorable.
  • Death Is a Sad Thing: While he witnesses death in "The Cat on the Broomstick" where he sadly looks at a baby bird that was killed by Baron Ghost. Unico's first true encounter with death is in "The Tale of the Fangs of Athens" chapter he sees Sphinx dying from her injures. While Unico handles the situation maturely, he manages to shed tears during his final conversation with her. Even after breaking the news to her son, he starts silently crying as Piro starts mourning her death. To prevent him from entering despair, Unico manages to gently tell him of his mother's last words which are words of encouragement and bravery.
  • Disney Death: In the 1981 movie, Unico gets killed after Baron's demonic form ends up breaking his horn and falls down in the process. The combination of Katy's tears and Beezle giving his own horn to Unico ends up reviving him and transforms into The Mighty Unicorn out of intense love form the two.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: Due to being a child, he's mostly unaware of his capabilities when it comes to pulling off stronger attacks or using his powers. In the 1981 film, he's horrified that he was able to draw blood after attacking The Baron.
  • Gentle Giant: He has the ability to temporarily transform into "The Mighty Unicorn" if somebody truly loves him or showing an act of kindness toward him. In this form, he looks like a grown up unicorn and is able to use stronger power and magic such as turning gigantic. Despite his large appearance, Unico's innocent and sweet behavior is maintained which is notably shown in the manga.
  • Glowing Eyes: In Unico: Awakening, when he uses the powers coming from his own horn, his horn and both of his eyes' glow bright white.
  • Healing Magic Is the Hardest: Since he's a young unicorn, Unico rarely uses his powers as a healing method in "The Realm of The Gods" and "The Mortal Realm", especially when it comes to life-threatening situations such as critical sicknesses and death. The best he can do is to lick wounds and minor injuries from any living being. There are a few instances where he deeply considers using his powers when it comes to life-threatening situations.:
    • In "The Cat on the Broomstick", Unico and Chao befriend a poor old woman who suddenly becomes ill and on the verge of death midway through the chapter. After Chao is rescued, his final act of kindness is secretly using his magic to heal "Granny/The Old Beggar Woman" who's resting inside a wooden cabin. Before he uses this special power, he becomes worried if his magic could actually heal Granny. He even tells himself "Please heal Granny's illness." before aiming his horn between the cracks of the cabin to heal her.
    • In "Black Clouds and White Feather", he befriends a sweet young girl named Chico. However, she's become badly ill due to living in a city that's become polluted and full of smog caused by a factory. She's so ill that she has difficulty walking and standing up. Unico decides to stay with Chico and allows her grandfather to handle the situation and keeps track on the medicine she takes. He later tells Garappachi the rat that the medicine isn't helping Chico recover, which causes Unico to take drastic measures to prevent her from dying.
    • In "The Tale of the Fangs of Athens", Unico witnesses Sphinx (Piro's mother) dying after getting attacked by Oedipus after her riddle was solved. Her injures are so severe that he doesn't consider using his powers. The only thing he can do is to gently break the news to Piro that his mother has been killed and promises to make him become strong and sturdy after her death.
  • The Heart: He's very reasonable and does his best to deeply understand people's problems. No matter how terrible the situation is, Unico always reassures his friends to avoid them from going into despair and finds ways to resolve conflict in a peaceful manner.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: In the 1979 pilot, he's unaware that he magically summoned a slice of cake. He tries hitting his head a few times just for his powers to work again.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: A pure-hearted, compassionate, and innocent young unicorn whose kindness is unlimited, to the point that he actually empathizes with Lord Kuruku and a Demon Monster. In general, he doesn't like seeing anyone in pain and/or suffering (either physical and mental) whether they're good or evil, which causes him to show visible concern for them.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: For a young unicorn, Unico's behavior and personality is meek and always speaks in a gentle tone. He's also shown fondness of wearing eyeliner as seen in the manga and various official artwork by Osamu Tezuka and Tezuka Productions. The introductory song to the 1981 film even shows him checking his own appearance while holding a small mirror while straightening up his pink mane.
  • Kid Hero: While he's a young unicorn, he's able to handle dangerous and life threatening for the safety of others around him.
  • Martial Pacifist: While he's a strong believer in non-violence and taking a peaceful approach when facing villains and antagonists, Unico isn't afraid of using his horn as a weapon when it comes to those harming or threatening his friends, villains with zero redeeming qualities, or as a defense mechanism.
  • Nice Guy: He's a total sweetheart and generally kindhearted towards others.
  • Out of Character Is Serious Business: While he rarely gets angry towards his friends in all incarnations. In the manga, he got angry at Chao for pretending to be a hunter and killing animals after showing her the amount of dead forest animals that was illegally killed by Baron. Especially when he shows Chao a dead bird floating in a lake. He tells Chao to "Cut that out!" and refuses to turn her into a human girl for her safety.
  • Parental Substitute: In the manga, he becomes a parental figure to Piro the Sphinx Cub after witnessing his mother dying after Oedipus ends up attacking her after solving her riddle. Unico promises Piro's mother to make Piro become "A strong and brave sphinx!" after her death.
  • Shrinking Violet: He's very shy and meek but is always open to helping out others and tries his hardest to make the world a better place.
  • Sympathy for the Devil:
    • In Unico in the Island of Magic, he empathizes with Kuruku after learning that his hatred was due to Kuruku being abused by his owners as a regular puppet and spending centuries completely alone. Not only does he beg Kuruku to simply break his spell and release all his puppets before he's forced to unintentionally kill him, but he even insists on becoming his first friend so Kuruku won't be lonely anymore. Unico can only sadly watch as Kuruku is screaming in pain before reverting back to being a regular puppet.
    • In Saving our Fragile Earth, he feels sorry for a Demon Monster that was created out of humanity's carelessness with the environment and shows concern when the demon hurts himself while chasing him. Happily, Unico successfully befriends the demon, the demon vows to Unico that "They shall never meet again".
  • Tender Tears: In all media, Unico is easily driven to tears when it comes to being mistreated, feeling lonely, or feeling intense sympathy towards others.
  • Telepathy: In the manga, one of his abilities is to read minds, thoughts and feelings, and communicate non-verbally to others. In addition, he also has the ability to see another person's dreams. His telepathic ability is briefly shown in the 1981 movie when he notifies The West Wind and Beezle that he's in danger after Baron Ghost badly hurts him as he's rescuing Katy.
  • Voice Changeling:
    • In the manga, he's able to replicate any animal noise and cry. He uses this in "The Cat on the Broomstick" arc, which involves him making various animal noises to distract Baron Ghost in order to rescue Chao. He later uses this as a scare tactic when facing a duo of hawks sent by Baron Ghost to destroy The Old Beggar Woman's house and attack her in the process. Only The West Wind is able to recognize Unico's voice when he's trying to trick her into thinking he's a frog while he is under water and she is above him.
    • In the chapter where he befriends Piro, he promises Piro's deceased mother that he will help him become braver and stronger. During a training session, Unico teaches him about the importance of self-defense and facing obstacles. While Piro is notably scared, Unico decides to mimic Piro's mother's voice to help him feel confident and braver during the training session, which actually works.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Despite being a baby unicorn, Unico has the emotional maturity of a young adult. When he gets involved in mature situations (such as death and racism), he pays close attention to their problems and finds ways to reason with them. In "The Cat on the Broomstick" chapter, he explains to Chao about the dangers of meeting strangers (especially grown men) due to her naivety of humans and gullible towards Baron Ghost despite his brief meeting with her. In the "Hometown Visit" chapter, Unico discusses to his mother about the importance of "Needing sorrow to appreciate happiness" after learning that "Unicorns rarely feel unhappy" around bedtime.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Unico is fond of dressing up in feminine attire and wearing makeup. In the manga and various illustrations, he's shown wearing yellow or pink colored eyeliner which extends to his Mighty Unicorn Form.

Eventually, this causes her to think that becoming a witches cat is a great idea since she can use her powers to make others cheerful.
