    General
  • One-Shot Character: With the exception of Mr. Conductor, Stacy Jones, Billy Twofeathers, Diesel 10, and Lady (the former three appearing in Shining Time Station prior to the film, Diesel 10 having further appearances, and Lady appearing in the special Calling All Engines!), the rest of the TATMR-exclusive characters only appeared in the movie and haven't appeared in any further Thomas-related projects since due to the film's failure and how it affected the Shining Time Station franchise.

Engines:

    Lady the Magic Engine

"And helping each other brings to life the magic in all of us."

Voiced by: Britt Allcroft

A purple and gold tank engine who only appears in Thomas and the Magic Railroad and in a dream sequence in Calling All Engines. She runs the Magic Railroad that connects Shining Time to Sodor, and is the source of the Gold Dust required to keep Mr. Conductor and Sodor alive.

  • And I Must Scream: It is very heavily implied that she was still conscious in Muffle Mountain, meaning she spent decades completely immobile as she sensed her railway was dying.
  • Big Good: Lady serves as this for the film as she is the main focus of the plot and the titular railway belongs to her.
  • Cartoon Creature: She was designed by Britt Allcroft. While there IS a real-life engine that bears a close resemblance to her, it's really more coincidence than anything else.
  • Cute Witch: A pretty female engine with magical powers, and the source of the Gold Dust that both the Conductors and Sodor uses.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She was destroyed once by Diesel 10note , and Burnett Stone kept her locked in Muffle Mountain, doing what he could to repair her.
  • Disabled Deity: After Diesel 10note  nearly destroyed her once, she was rebuilt but wasn't able to steam again. Because she hadn't run in years, the magic keeping Sodor and Mr. Conductor alive began to fade.
  • Dream Walker: Implied by her appearance in Calling All Engines.
  • Fertile Feet: Wheels, in her case. When traveling on the Magic Railroad, she leaves Gold Dust in her wake, which heals the world around her.
  • Flat Character: Despite being a major point of The Movie, not much is known about her personality at all.
  • Magitek: Is a steam engine responsible for generating the magic that protects Sodor and Shining Time.
  • She's Back: When Lady starts running for the first time in decades, she proceeds to bring the railway back from the brink of destruction and manages to restore her own face.
  • The Smurfette Principle: The only female engine in the film.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: After she regains her face, she tells Burnett that she knew he never forgot about her magic and that it always lived in him.

    Splatter and Dodge
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/thomasandthemagicrailroad148.png

Splatter- "Actually it's just Splatter.
Dodge- "An-an Dodge."

Voiced by: Neil Crone (Splatter) and Kevin Frank (Dodge)

Basis: British Railways Class 08

Built: 1952/1962

Diesel 10's two bumbling sidekicks.

  • Bumbling Henchmen Duo: The henchmen of Diesel 10 who are very incompetent and eventually get fed up with their boss and betray him.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite initially siding with Diesel 10, they appear reluctant to harm a fellow engine, even a steam engine (See Minion with an F in Evil below) and eventually lose their patience with Diesel 10 and abandon him.
  • Minion with an F in Evil:
Diesel 10: If she can be destroyed...
Dodge: Uh, destroyed? Did you say destroyed?
    Splatter: D-word?
    Dodge: Like, hurt?!
  • Portmanteau: Diesel 10 calls them Splodge, because he doesn't have time to say both names.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: They bring a lot of comedy to the movie with their bumbling.
  • Reused Character Design: Their models are 'Arry and Bert, but repainted.
  • Vile Villain, Laughable Lackey: Diesel 10 is a truly evil villain who tried to murder the steam engines, but Splodge's antics are played for laughs.

Humans:

    Mr. Conductor
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alecbaldwinasmrconductor.png

"Sparkle, Sparkle Sparkle!"
Played by: Alec Baldwin

A 20-centimeter tall man who lives in the signal house on the mural at Shining Time Station. He uses gold dust to travel between Shining Time and Sodor, and when his supply starts to run low, he needs to find the source of the magic.

  • Amnesia Danger: When his magic runs out, he gradually becomes more forgetful. He can't remember the way to the windmill, and later forgets the secret it had.
  • Blue Is Heroic: He wears a blue uniform and is the protector of Shining Time.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: When he falls from Diesel 10's clutch, he lands on some sand bags and briefly talks to the viewer.
  • The Narrator: True to form, Alec Baldwin would voice the US version of the main series as well.
  • Incredible Shrinking Man: He can shrink.
  • Legacy Character: On Shining Time Station, Ringo Starr and George Carlin both played Mr. Conductor at one point, coinciding with their respective tenures of narrating Thomas episodes. Later on, Alec passed on the torch to Junior.
  • Magic Pants: His clothes change size along with him.
  • Passing the Torch: At the end of the movie, he passes the role as conductor of Shining Time to Junior.
  • Remembered Too Late: He forgets the word "lady" from the windmill's secret, and only remembers it and its significance after Diesel 10 finds Lady and Thomas.
  • Sizeshifter: He can change his size between normal size and tiny, but only when travelling between Shining Time and Sodor.
  • Talking in Your Sleep: In the movie, he talks in his sleep about the Magic Railroad, just before having a nightmare about Shining Time being destroyed. When he does so, he reveals vital information about the Railroad.

    Burnett Stone
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/burnettstone.png

"I just... don't seem to understand... about magic anymore."

Played by: Peter Fonda

An old man who lives on Muffle Mountain and had the ownership of Lady passed down onto him. After Diesel 10 (originally P. T. Boomer) destroyed Lady and his wife Tasha passed away, he lived in solitude, trying to make Lady steam again.

  • Archenemy: To Diesel 10 in the final product, but the workprint has P.T. Boomer in that role instead. Boomer has held nothing but hatred for Burnett, essentially making it his goal to make Burnett's life hell. Burnett, however, just takes Boomer's heckling, hoping that he'll go away. This of course, just lets Boomer progress in his plan to dig into Muffle Mountain.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: With Tasha.
  • Cool Old Guy: Despite his morose nature, he's still an old man who has access to a magical engine with a fair amount of engineering know-how. He fits the trope much better when he finally breaks out of his depression.
  • The Eeyore: He's pretty much in a state of perpetual depression throughout most of the film.
  • Fatal Flaw: Cowardice, as expanded on in the workprint. Back in his younger days, Burnett didn't have it in him to stand up to his rival, P.T. Boomer, when the latter threatened Lady, even though the options offered would damage her no matter what. Tasha's death likewise sent him into a Heroic BSoD, resulting in the rather spineless and morose man seen in the present, basically letting Boomer walk all over and taunt him, which has the sad side-effect of enabling Boomer to progress in his plan to destroy Muffle Mountain. Him overcoming this flaw in the end is what caps off his intended character arc and signifies Boomer's defeat.
  • Heroic BSoD: Suffered one after Tasha's death, with it being the culmination of his failure to keep Lady safe and show his wife the wonders of the Magic Railroad and Sodor. It's why he's so constantly depressed in the present-day.
  • He's Back!: Once coal from Sodor finally gets Lady back in steam, Burnett's happiness and confidence return, and when confronted by Diesel 10/P.T. Boomer, he fully rejects their claims that they'll finally get him.
Burnett: No, you won't (Boomer)! Because the magic you refused to believe in...will get the better of you!
  • The Lost Lenore: Also with Tasha, who died prior to the movie's events.
  • My Greatest Failure: Diesel 10 chased Lady down, causing her to suffer a terrible crash that near-totaled her. To make matters worse, Burnett was unable to fully repair her. The failure becomes even more pronounced in the workprint, as the true culprit was P.T. Boomer, who had bullied Burnett into letting him drive Lady, lest he destroy her...and Burnett gave in to Boomer's demands, leading to the man driving Lady recklessly before he deliberately crashed her. As he tells Patch...
Burnett: Unlike you Patch, I gave into a bully...
  • The Promise: He promised Tasha he would take her on a ride with Lady one day. He never got the chance; Diesel 10 (P.T. Boomer in the original version) wrecked Lady, and Burnett couldn't get her working again before Tasha died.
  • Rail Enthusiast: When he was younger, the railroad was his life and passion. After Tasha's death, he became depressed and moved to the other side of Muffle Mountain so that he wouldn't have to look at any more trains.
  • The Stoic: He doesn't emote that much. The final product just makes him seem morose, but the workprint reveals that he's like this because he's constantly holding back the despair of failing to protect Lady, and thus, unable to fulfill the promise made to his wife, Tasha.
  • Tragic Dream: Wanted nothing more than to take Tasha on a trip on Lady, and spent years repairing her after she was crashed, promising Tasha that tomorrow, everything would be perfect and Lady would steam again. He failed to do so when Tasha died, rendering him incapable of ever fulfilling The Promise.
  • When He Smiles: Billy Twofeathers laments that Burnett had a "wonderful smile" when he taught him about railroading. We finally see it after coal from Sodor gets Lady in steam.

    Lily Stone
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lily2_2.jpg

Played by: Mara Wilson

Burnett's granddaughter who's sent to stay with Burnett, and helps him and Mr. Conductor uncover the secret of the Gold Dust.

  • Companion Cube: Bluebird, her plush bird.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her father is never seen or mentioned, just her mother. In the original versions of the script, it was mentioned that he was out of town trying to find work. The workprint has Lilly talking to him over the phone.
  • Dull Surprise: Her acting is a little wooden. Justified, as Mara Wilson was a child when filming the movie.
  • Kid Hero: She’s 12 years old in Thomas and the Magic Railroad and is a heroine.
  • Missing Child: She's a child who goes missing during the halfway point of the movie. It's bad enough in the official release, but much worse in the workprint when you realize that P.T. Boomer is in town.
  • Nostalgic Narrator: She was originally going to be the narrator, telling the story to her children as an adult.
  • Tomboy: She likes climbing and horseback riding.

    P.T. Boomer
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ptboomer2.png

"I'm gonna get my revenge, Burnett Stone. You and that engine!"
Played by: Doug Lennox

The original antagonist of the film, who was cut after test screenings, unfortunately taking a lot of the original movie with him. He was Burnett's childhood rival, and was responsible for crashing Lady in the first place. He returns many years later, intending on getting rid of her for good.

  • Big Bad: What he was supposed to be. It becomes clear in the workprint that he is indeed the true threat. While Diesel 10's goals will harm the engines (in the workprint at least, in the final cut he had Boomer's omnicidal traits), Boomer's goals will harm everyone.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Just when you think he's gonna get run over by the Rainbow Sun, he manages to get out of the way.
  • The Bully: To Burnett in the film's original backstory, and continues to the present day.
  • The Corrupter: In the original cut. His very presence in Shining Time disturbs and divides the community, turning the once-thriving town into a distant and empty place, not helped by the gold dust supply running out and taking the energy of the town with it.
  • Covered in Gunge: When he gets soaked in sludge.
  • Demoted to Extra: His only appearance in the final film is him asking Burnett for directions, with his original dialogue re-dubbed.
  • Driven by Envy: His entire motivation is to heckle Burnett because Boomer Did Not Get the Girl.
  • Evil Is Petty: The leaked workprint of the film ultimately confirms that the best way to sum up Boomer's villainy is that he is a petty, heckling old man. His response to Billy Twofeathers not giving him answers is to punch a flower basket that Mr. Conductor had watered earlier in the film. Another one has him mess with a newspaper delivery boy because he was trying to find information on Burnett. His interactions with Burnett aren't even that of a threatening villain, but a old bully content to just taunt his rival while planning to blow up Muffle Mountain so that he can get his hands on Lady and sell her to a scrapper...all just to basically make said rival's life hell.
  • Evil Old Folks: He's as old as Burnett Stone, and he's a disruptive menace.
  • Evil Plan: His goal is to get Revenge on Burnett Stone by locating Lady and scrapping her for a quick buck, which would have the side-goal of making Burnett even more miserable.
  • For the Evulz: In addition to being driven by envy, this is Boomer’s preferred motivation for bullying. His actions might not benefit him, but they do make others like Burnett suffer, and that's enough.
  • Greed: He cares more about money rather than magic. According to Boomer’s own philosophy, money is what makes him happy.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He never let go of Burnett winning Tasha's love and marrying her. This is why he hates him so much.
  • Hate Sink: Boomer is a world-class asshole with no redeemable qualities, though he does have a bit of the Laughably Evil nature of Diesel 10, Splatter and Dodge, albeit in his mannerisms rather than taking pratfalls. That being said, he is ultimately a scummy bully with incredibly petty motives; wanting to destroy his old rival simply for marrying the girl he had a crush on, despite the fact that he already succeeded in poisoning their life together by crashing Lady to a near-total loss, and being disruptive around Shining Time.
  • Irony: He claims that magic has done nothing for Burnett and that he only believes in money, clearly considering magic to be childish, but Boomer's actions and mannerisms are far more immature than Burnett, and he at times comes off less than a Knight of Cerebus, but rather just a crazy old man with an incredibly petty goal.
  • Jerkass: It’s easy to see why Tasha chose Burnett over him...along with his other actions.
  • Kick the Dog: Boomer is not a very nice person compared to all the residents of Shining Time:
    • In his Establishing Character Moment, he runs his motorcycle close to the track while the Rainbow Sun is passing, completely ignoring safety protocols and showing his disregard for things that are meant to keep things peaceful.
    • He punches off a few flowers from the flower basket after Billy does not comply with a definitive answer to Burnett Stone's whereabouts.
    • His quest for Lady leads to him disturbing the peace of Muffle Mountain by attempting to dig and bulldoze his way before resorting to using explosives.
    • He has the guts to tell Burnett that Lady is "good for scrap", before cackling.
    • He tries to bribe Patch with money for info on the location of Lady's whistle. Patch's reply?: "I don't talk with bullies, Boomer!"
    • Finally, it is revealed that he deliberately crashed Lady out of spite because Tasha was falling for Burnett and he couldn't bear it. And even now, with Burnett stuck in a depressed state, Boomer still wants to make him miserable by scrapping Lady.
  • Knight of Cerebus: He quite literally disturbs all of Shining Time with his presence, and is a consistent threat constantly hanging over the heads of the human characters, who regard him with disdain and fear.
  • Lack of Empathy: His feelings are guiltless and he is indifferent to all of his actions no matter how cruel they are.
  • Large Ham: He's a VERY emotive person, clearly taking joy in being a total scumbag.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The magic he refuses to believe in bites him in the ass during the film’s climax. Having him (along with Diesel 10) getting soaked in sludge is pretty fitting for him to say the least, not to mention that it pretty much leaves him stuck on Sodor with no way to get back to the 'real world'.
  • Laughably Evil: In a different sort of manner to Diesel 10. Boomer's mannerisms are him constantly cackling like a maniac and taunting others in very drawn-out ways, which helps to somewhat diminish his presented evil. Of course, since he doesn't take Diesel 10's pratfalls, that also means that he's consistently on track to accomplishing his Evil Plan to destroy Muffle Mountain.
  • Love Makes You Evil: Wanted Tasha for himself. That being said, he was probably already a jerk beforehand, so this isn't exactly a redeeming trait.
  • Mad Bomber: Planned on using dynamite to blow up Muffle Mountain.
  • Meaningful Name: "Boomer" is a rather apt surname for a Mad Bomber.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: The narrator confirms that if Boomer succeeded in destroying the Lost Engine, he would've destroyed both universes of Sodor and Shining Time Station.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Boomer is basically that bully from your middle-school days grown up, and has the immaturity to show for it. He's basically a childish thug in the body of an old man harassing another old man for a grudge that happened years ago, and if Patch, an actual kid can sum you up as a bully, then you aren't really that much of an adult.
  • Sadist: He clearly takes joy in making life hell for Burnett and anyone else in the Indian Valley.
  • Shadow Archetype: He’s basically what Burnett could have been if he lost his belief of magic entirely.
  • The Skeptic: When he first sees Thomas, he assumes he is just a gigantic toy. He also doesn't believe in the magic of Shining Time Station, preferring to place his faith in money, which was the source of Burnett telling Diesel 10, "The magic you refused to believe in will get the better of you"; he was originally talking to Boomer.
  • The Sociopath: He has zero empathy and compassion towards anyone except himself and wants to make those he hates suffering for petty reasons.
  • The Unfettered: With ambition and pragmatism being two of his greatest traits, Boomer will use any means to destroy Lady just for money. He also has no moral compass.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: The reason why he was cut was because the test audiences complained about how "scary" and "creepy" he was. It's even a plot point in the original script; a person like Boomer has zero business being in a peaceful town like Shining Time or the quiet country of Sodor. That being said, he's just as much of a Large Ham as Diesel 10 is, and does have his comedic moments. He just doesn't screw up the way Diesel 10 does.
  • Villain Team-Up: Joins forces with Diesel 10 in the climax.
  • Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: What does PT stand for? Passing Through.

    Mr Conductor Jr.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2018_08_21_at_80515_pm.png
"This is just like the funfair! Give us two seconds!"

He is the younger cousin of Mr. Conductor. He is very nice, handsome, and loves to have fun.

  • Annoying Younger Sibling: He can be like this to Mr. Conductor, despite being cousins.
  • Character Development: At first, he was accident-prone, snarky, and lazy, but as the film goes on, he becomes nicer.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He first starts out like this, but he becomes nicer as the film goes on.
  • Friend to All Children: The second time Junior meets her, he brings Lily along to the Island of Sodor.
  • Good Is Not Soft: In the first draft of the script, he defeated Diesel 10 and PT Boomer by turning them into sludge with his magic bandana!
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: He has blond hair, and a nice personality.
  • Lazy Bum: He starts out like this, but this personality slowly disappears as the film goes on.
  • Pretty Boy: He is young, handsome, has blonde hair, and speaks in a Scottish accent.
  • Surfer Dude: Is first seen relaxing on a beach, dressed like a surfer.
  • Teleporters and Transporters: Like all Conductors, he uses Gold Dust to teleport himself between places. This comes in handy when he and James are trapped in the Sodor Ironworks and nearly pushed off into the melting pit by Diesel 10.
  • The Prankster: Junior loves pulling pranks and causing mischief. According to Thomas, Junior once shoved party poppers in his funnel.
