Protagonist

    Illusia
Species: Dragon Egg → Baby Dragon → Young Plague Dragon → Plague Dragon → Ouroboros → Oneiros → Apocalypse

The protagonist of the story. He was once a human before he died and reincarnated into a dragon's egg.

  • Amnesiac Hero: Illusia remembers nothing of his life as a human or even if he was originally a male or female, just having a vague certainty that he was a Japanese man.
  • Badass Adorable: In his Baby Dragon stage, he is a small cutesy bipedal dragon... but still packs a wallop.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: Ever since he evolved into a Young Plague Dragon, Illusia is basically a living biological hazard with his Dragon Scale Powder and Disease Breath skills. In spite of that, he's a heroic individual who yearns for companionship.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: Following his evolution into a Young Plague Dragon, his sclerae turn black — which going by the description of Plague Dragons should signify them being living calamities. Illusia, on the other hand, tries as hard as he can to defy this.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: After becoming a full-fledged Plague Dragon, Illusia attacks Myria in order to scare her away and thus keep her safe. Marielle attacks him to protect her, but quickly susses out what he's doing and doesn't pursue him.
  • Breath Weapon: Has both Baby Breath → Scorching Breath and Disease Breath skills, though he tries to avoid using the latter.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Illusia remains a good person despite his evolution into a Plague Dragon and other dangerous forms.
  • Did Not Think This Through: Illusia chooses to evolve into a Young Plague Dragon due to the Divine Voice baiting him with the Humanization skill.
  • Dragons Are Demonic: The Divine Voice manipulates Illusia into picking destructive evil-oriented evolutions like the Plague Dragon, with the intent of turning him into a Draconic Abomination worthy of being the next Dark Lord. His final form, Apocalypse, is said to be a dark draconic god of destruction fated to burn the world with hellfire.
  • Healing Hands: As a Baby Dragon he learns the healing spell "Rest", but loses it when he's tricked into evolving into a Young Plague Dragon. He later relearns it and its more powerful versions.
  • Jagged Mouth: In the manga, as a Young Plague Dragon he sports a serrated mouth, with his teeth blending in with the rest of his snout.
  • Meaningful Name: He starts off as a nameless dragon, until he is later named by Myria after a flower of the same name. It thrives in monster-populated areas, making it a symbol of courage and strength.
  • Master of Illusion: As an Oneiros, he gains skills such as Dragon Mirror to manipulate his own image and project illusions to others and Illusion Immunity.
  • Multiple Head Case: As an Ouroboros, he becomes a Hermaphrodite two-headed dragon with "Partner" as the female left head.
  • Poisonous Person: After evolving into a Young Plague Dragon, he gains skills like Poison Fang, Paralyzing Claw, Disease Breath, and Dragon Scale Powder — which automatically spreads a toxic powder whenever he opens his wings. However, he goes out of his way to avoid using these powers unless absolutely necessary.
  • Razor Wind: After evolving into a Plague Dragon, he gains the Kamaitachi/Razor Wind skill that uses blades of air to slice foes.
  • Rolling Attack: The Roll skill becomes one of his go-to attacks as a Dragon Egg, Baby Dragon, and even a Young Plague Dragon, becoming more powerful and versatile as it levels up.
  • Unwitting Pawn: The Divine Voice plays him like a fiddle, manipulating him or the circumstances around him to force him to metamorphose into increasingly monstrous and evil-oriented forms.
  • You Kill It, You Bought It: Killing the Giant Orangurang makes Illusia the Orangurang pack's new leader, much to Lacerta's annoyance and jealousy.
  • Weredragon: As Illusia improves his Humanization skill, he becomes able to transform into a Draconic Humanoid form with pale skin, blue-white hair, black sclerae, sharp teeth, and claw-like fingernails.

Illusia's Group

    "Partner"
Species: Ouroboros
A sentient being/mind that came to be as Illusia's left head when he evolved into an Ouroboros.

    Black Lizard
Species: Venom Princess Lacerta → Venom Queen Lacerta → Venom Goddess Lacerta
An unnamed female black lizard monster that Illusia befriends.
  • Badass Adorable: In her Princess stage, she's a small black lizard. The manga spoofs this by having a pinup-style illustration of her pointing out that while her body is long and slender her legs are thick.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: She has no problem in eating anything that is poisonous, and even prefers using noxious poisons as seasoning.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: After Illusia saves her from falling off a cliff, she becomes very affectionate towards him and is extremely jealous when he starts paying more attention to the orangurangs than to her.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Uses her Clay Gun skill to conjure and shoot shards of earth at enemies.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": Illusia never actually names her and just refers to her as "Black Lizard" since that's how she appears.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She poisons Illusia intending to eat him, but after he saves her from falling off a cliff she falls in love with him and becomes his companion.
  • I Owe You My Life: She devotes herself to Illusia after he saves her from falling to her death.
  • It Can Think: Illusia constantly underestimates her intelligence, but she's actually fully sentient and capable of deductive reasoning and emotions. The Orangurangs are well aware of how intelligent she is and defer to her.
  • Master Poisoner: Her species line gives her skills involving poison such as Poison Immunity, Venom Claws, Venom Fangs, and Detoxify. She later loses some of these skills to the Forte Slime when it attempts to consume her.
  • Number Two: The orangurangs view her as Illusia's second in command and defer to her whenever he isn't around, though they don't like it since she's far harsher than Illusia is.
  • Rescue Romance: She becomes affectionate towards Illusia after he saves her from falling off a cliff, with the orangurangs figuring that she's in love with him.
  • Rolling Attack: She uses her Roll skill as a means to escape and a faster way to travel.

    Alo
Species: Wight → Skull Low Mage → Revana Mage → Revana Low Lich → Revana Lich → Walpurgis

    Trent
Species: Lesser Trent → Magical Tree → Tyrant Guardian → World Treant → Sephirot's Tree Dragon

    Nightmare
Species: Baby Arachne → Petit Nightmare → Nightmare → Atranart
One of the eight Baby Arachne spiders that Partner takes care of. Among her siblings, she is a special case that would eventually part ways with her siblings to journey together with Illusia.
  • Interspecies Adoption: She and her siblings were adopted by Partner during their egg phase, and she's closely attached to her like how a child is attached to their mother.
  • Spider People: As Atranart.

    Volk Weidaf
Species: Human
A dragon hunter.

    Magiatite Grandpa
Species: Magiatite Heart → Gold Magiatite Heart

Noah's Forest

The Village

    Myria Milleania
A young mage girl that Illusia encounters in Noah Forest.
  • Good Is Dumb: She's not stupid, but can be painfully naïve and let her kindness blind her to risks. She used her magic to cure Illusia, a baby dragon, while her party was hunting in the woods. She wanders into the monster-infested Noah Forest alone looking for Doz due to blaming herself for his disappearance, leading to her getting attacked. She also brings Illusia — who by that point is a Young Plague Dragon — to the village when a Little Rock Dragon attacks it, which backfires horribly when Illusia is forced to metamorphose into an adult Plague Dragon to stop its rampage, the ensuing battle destroying much of the village.
  • Nice Guy: To a fault. She even protected and cured Illusia upon their first meeting despite him being a baby dragon.
  • White Mage: She specializes in healing magic and is classed as a White Mage, though she's still able to use offensive spells.

    Marielle
Species: Elfingle-human
The elder of the village outside Noah's Forest, a half-Elf white mage who is Myria's instructor.
  • Berserk Button: Being mistaken for a child due to her youthful appearance infuriates her, especially when Myria once claimed to be her mother to get her out of a spot of trouble with a guard who'd mistaken her for a sassy lost child.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Marielle is a half-elf, something that's noted to be rare since elves are isolationists.
  • Holy Hand Grenade: She's capable of using light magic — usually reserved for healing — offensively.
  • Older Than They Look: She's centuries old, but appears to be a preteen girl due to being a half-elf. To her annoyance, most people assume she's a child and don't believe her when she says she only looks young due to being a half-elf.
  • The Red Mage: While she's classified as a white mage, she's also capable of wielding offensive magic — blasting Illusia with a fireball when he "attacks" Myria.
  • White Magician Girl: She's classed as a white mage and is far more skillful and knowledgeable than her naïve but kindhearted apprentice.

    Meltia
Species: Human
A swordswoman adventurer contracted to look into Doz's disappearance.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Upon finding Illusia's lair, she assumes it's a dragon-worshipping shrine that was taken over by spice-hoarding bandits. When Illusia shows up, she and her Canis-human companion Yuno panic and attack him on-sight, and are confused when he doesn't fight back.
  • Interspecies Friendship: She's good friends and adventuring comrades with the timid and somewhat dimwitted dog-woman Yuno.
  • Master Swordsman: She's a skilled hero renowned for her sword-fighting abilities.

    Yuno
Species: Canis-Human
A dog beastman adventurer who accompanies Meltia and her party.

    Gregory Grimm
Species: Human

  • Shoot the Dog: In his final moments, he implores Illusia to kill him if it will help the dragon become stronger. Illusia reluctantly does so and makes use of the new levels to his evil titles to become a full-grown Plague Dragon so he can fight the Little Rock Dragon.

Harunae Desert

    Ballrabbit
Species: Miniature Ballrabbit → Small Ballrabbit → Peach Ballrabbit
A weak rabbit monster Illusia first encountered in the desert.
  • Acquired Poison Immunity: It's implied his evolution into a Peach Ballrabbit stems from being around Illusia, though whether it's due to being in Illusia's mouth frequently or due to his curse-afflicting scale-powder is unclear. The evolution grants him Curse Resistance among other benefits.
  • Big Eater: He has shown to be quite a glutton.
  • Healing Hands: Unexpectedly, he possesses skill [REST] allowing him to heal Nina.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: From the start, he looks rather cute and harmless, which does make him easy prey in a desert full of strong monsters. His cuteness is arguably toned down as he grows stronger alongside Illusia, showing off some Killer Rabbit vibes.
  • Stomach of Holding: After he's grown into a Peach Ballrabbit, he keeps Nina safe at one point by swallowing her.
  • Voice for the Voiceless: Illusia the Dragon naturally can't speak, so once the Ballrabbit obtains the ability Telepathy, he does speak on Illusia's behalf when he's willing to do so.

    Nina Nefah
Species: Felis-Human
A cat beastman slave that Illusia saves during his time in the desert.

    Adoff Ahrens
Species: Human

  • Break the Haughty: He attempted to invoke this upon the Hero Illusia by humiliating him in a swordfight, hoping to undo some of the damage the church had done by pampering the hero so much. He thought he had succeeded...
  • Frame-Up: A victim of one to the murder of his own wife and daughter.
  • Innocently Insensitive: He goes most of the time he's with Illusia the dragon, unaware that that's the dragon's name. It's only after they've killed the hero who has the exact same name, that he learns Illusia's name. Given the human-hero's evil actions, he's quite apologetic when he realizes why the dragon reacted so awkwardly to the mention of the name.

Antagonists

    Doz Doglemaad
Species: Human

  • Animal Nemesis: Doz has a grudge against a Rock Dragon that slaughtered his first adventuring party, which is why he ropes Myria and Grantz into hunting down a Little Rock Dragon.
  • Ax-Crazy: Being enthralled by the Forte Slime drives him insane, leaving him incapable of speech.
  • Bullying a Dragon: He picks a fight with a Little Rock Dragon, which ends up getting him and Myria severely injured and Grantz killed.
  • Not Quite Dead: He's mortally wounded by the Little Rock Dragon, with everyone assuming he's dead until a villager sees him in the forest, limping and deranged. It turns out the Forte Slime "saved" him so that he could act as its pawn, luring the Little Rock Dragon to destroy the village and force Illusia to fight it.
  • Laughing Mad: He's reduced to a gibbering Giggling Villain after being enthralled by the Forte Slime.
  • Smug Snake: According to Myria, he was arrogant, hotheaded, and disliked by everyone in the village, with people only putting up with him due to his combat prowess.
  • Sword Beam: His Shockwave and Flame Slash skills were channelled through his sword, launching a wave of Razor Wind and flames respectively.

    Giant Orangurang
Species: Giant Orangurang
The leader of the Orangurang troupe stealing Illusia's food.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: He can use the Clay Wall to conjure earthen barriers, buying him time to heal and buff the other Orangurangs.
  • Healing Hands: His Rest Wide spell lets him heal his whole troupe at once.
  • Honor Before Reason: As duels are sacred in Orangurang culture, the Giant Orangurang has no choice but to accept when Illusia challenges him to one, although he notes that an interspecies duel has never been done before. However, he directs his underlings to take the Black Lizard hostage in case Illusia tries to escape. This ultimately ends up being his downfall, as while he and Illusia manage a Double Knockout on each other, Illusia's final blow proved fatal.
  • The Social Darwinist: When Illusia asks him to leave in exchange for curing the poisoned Orangurang, the Giant Orangurang refuses and says that the world of monsters is one where only the strong survive and the weak perish.
  • Status Buff: His Supporter special skill, combined with Quick and Power, lets him boost the strength and speed of his underlings.
  • Telepathy: He has the skill Telepathy, which lets him communicate not only with his own troupe but with others. Illusia uses this to converse with him and challenge him to a duel.
  • You Kill It, You Bought It: The Giant Orangurang tells Illusia that Orangurang society is one where duels are used to determine who the next leader of the troupe will be. When Illusia kills him in a duel, the dragon becomes the leader of the Orangurang troupe.

    Slime
Species: Slime → Forte Slime → Chaos Ooze → Ruin

  • Big Bad: It is the ultimate antagonist of the Noah's Forest Arc, driving Doz insane and sending him to lure the Little Rock Dragon into the village so that it could consume the corpses.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: In its humanoid and Arachne forms, it transforms its arms into blades and uses them to channel the Shockwave and Flame Slash skills.
  • Cannibalism Superpower: By devouring monsters and humans it can copy their abilities and assume their appearance, devouring the Giant Taranturogue and Giant Potortoise after Illusia kills them, and almost doing the same to the Black Lizard.
  • Corrupted Character Copy: It's a parody of Rimuru Tempest from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, being a pale blue slime with godlike powers, capable of assuming an androgynous humanoid form and assimilating the Skills of other monsters by consuming them. The main difference is that the Slime is evil and enslaves lesser monsters and humans to its will.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: One of the light novel chapters details its backstory — that it was bullied by the other slimes for being a rare blue slime, and tried to eat Illusia when he was just an egg (thereby absorbing the Demon King skill that enabled it to grow so powerful).
  • Eldritch Abomination: Illusia compares it to something out of the Cthulhu Mythos due to the aura of dread it radiates and its stat screen being nigh-unreadable.
  • Evil Counterpart: Just before Illusia seemingly kills it, the Slime reveals it too was tasked with becoming the strongest monster in existence by the Divine Voice.
  • Godhood Seeker: It seeks to become all-powerful by devouring every monster it comes across.
  • Interface Screw: The text on its stat screen is garbled and nigh illegible even after Illusia levels up the Divine Voice.
  • Not Quite Dead: Illusia seemingly kills it at the end of the Noah Forest arc, but it was revealed to have survived and continued its pursuit of apotheosis.
  • Power Copying: By devouring or even just engulfing other beings, it can assimilate their skills into itself. Among other powers, it steals the Giant Taranturogue and Giant Potortoise's skills and forms, Doz's ability to speak and Sword Beam skills, and Black Lizard's venom immunity.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: It devours the powerful monsters Illusia kills in order to empower itself, but maintains it has no intent of going after Illusia himself. Illusia suspects it wants to wait until it's powerful enough to Curb-Stomp Battle him, and decides not to give it the chance.

    Hero Illusia
Species: Human
A human Hero who happens to share the same name as Illusia the Dragon.
  • Fallen Hero: While he was never heroic to begin with, by the time he's killed, most of his titles and abilities have been taken away from him by the Divine Voice and replaced with the title "Fallen from Grace", so he's no longer a hero, not even by name alone.
  • Ironic Name: His name is taken from an in-universe flower than symbolizes bravery, heroism, and courage. This "hero" is an underhanded, backstabbing asshole.
  • It's All About Me: Arrogant to the point that when someone else humiliated him in a fight, he proceeded to plot a way to repay the favor and kill the guy who did it.
  • Nominal Hero: This guy is a hero in-name-only.
  • Pretty Boy: He certainly has the face of a hero and Illusia the Dragon remarks upon it a few times. This feeds into Beauty Is Bad and Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon as well.
  • Significant Name Overlap: Has the exact same name as the protagonist.
  • Sociopathic Hero: He really doesn't care about anyone but himself and uses whatever means he can to get what he wants. The "hero" part is questionable to begin with and it gets taken away from him shortly before he's killed.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He gets exposed for his treachery and shown for what he truly is in the space of a few minutes with no way to sweep it all under the rug. He only descends into madness from there, dropping all pretenses of being heroic.
  • Would Hurt a Child: A little girl approaches him to admire him. He responds by kicking her in the gut and going on his way. Later still, during his Villainous Breakdown, he takes a child hostage and threatens them.
