    Goetia

Goetia/Beast I

The eponymous demon of the story and former Beast I. After his defeat at the hands of Chaldea in the Temple of Time, Goetia finds himself trapped in another world that's not his own called Fodlan. Instead of trying to find a way back or restart his plans, he decides to use this opportunity and his newly acquired human form to walk among humans in hope of finding the reason on why humanity rejected his wishes.

    Byleth

Byleth Eisner

The feared Ashen Demon and Jeralt's daughter. She becomes acquainted with Goetia when her father's mercenary group camped at Remire Village and soon, both are hired as a professor and an assistant librarian respectively in Garreg Mach Monastery. Not only is she the house professor for the Blue Lions and a student in Goetia's class, but she also soon gets involve with the conspiracies of the Church and the secrets surrounding herself and Goetia.
  • The Ace: She's a skilled mercenary and an accomplished swordswoman who already gained a reputation as the Ashen Demon at a young age.
  • Angst? What Angst?: Discussed In-Universe and Subverted. Upon learning from Rhea regarding her late mother and the nature of her birth, she is troubled not on what happened to her mother but rather on how her father is heavily affected by this due to not having any connections to Sitri beforehand along with Jeralt not talking about her a lot.
  • Badass in Distress: She gets knocked out and kidnapped alongside the Ashen Wolves by the Demon Pillar Sitri to act as an additional sacrifice for the Chalice because of her status as Sothis' vessel.
  • Badass Teacher: She's a famed mercenary, professor of the Blue Lions and will not hesitate to fight on the frontlines alongside them.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The reason she seems comfortable around Goetia was because, unlike most people who meet her for the first time, he didn't seem bothered by her emotionless disposition when they first met, even able to tell what she was thinking from the looks on her eyes.
  • Birds of a Feather: She and Goetia are stoic, reserved individuals who are hard to read and despite exceling in the field of sword arts and magic respectively, have little to no social skills to the point of being tactless and lost in a joke. Naturally, Byleth gets along well with Goetia because of this. She also tries to distract herself from troubling thoughts just like Goetia.
  • BFS: She obtains the fabled 'Sword of the Creator' during the Rite of Rebirth.
  • Brutal Honesty: Like Goetia, Byleth isn't afraid to speak what's on her mind even if its blunt, though this has mostly to do with her lack of social experience and emotionless demeanor.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Even though she resolves to apologize to Goetia for their argument after a talk with Sothis, she still finds herself hesitating, to the point she's avoiding Goetia. Though another reason for this is because she still worries that it would take a long time for him to change his mind about helping Lysithea from her sickness.
  • Character Development: Even though Byleth was offered the position as an instructor out of the blue, she slowly grows to care for her students in the Blue Lions. Even after learning everything Rhea did to her, she refuses to leave the Monastery because it would mean abandoning the Blue Lions.
  • Chaste Hero: For her skills as a mercenary, she is completely clueless in the romance department. She is unfazed by Sylvain's flirtation attempts on her and is oblivious whenever someone teases her relationship with Goetia.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Prioritizing her survival is a key essential as a mercenary, so would use whatever is available in the area against her opponent, including fighting dirty. That includes throwing dirt to her opponents' eyes or kicking them in the groin.
  • The Comically Serious: Her stoic attitude and calm demeanor never falters, even doing activities such as fishing or reacting to absurd situations.
  • Cool Teacher: She soon grows into this role, with her students putting their trust her and Byleth refuses to abandon them when her father attempts to leave Garreg Mach Monastery with her after learning what Rhea did to his wife and daughter.
  • Covert Pervert: Her emotionless expression and stoic demeanor doesn't show, but her noticing Goetia's six-pack at the start of Chapter 36 appears to be more than just surprise at the mage's fitness. This is emphasis more in the Omakes, where she sniffs Goetia's hair and admits having taken a picture of him while he slept.
  • Daddy's Girl: Despite her stoic demeanor, Byleth is close to her father, Jeralt, being the only one prior to meeting Goetia, who can understand her in spite of her difficulty in expressing herself. The reason she's troubled from the revelation of her birth was because her father was affected the most from learning the truth about his wife.
  • Deuteragonist: She shares this role with Sothis, her development during her time as a professor and learning the secrets and origins of Sothis being one of the focuses in the story next to Goetia's development.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She's not above making dry comments with a deadpan expression.
  • Devious Daggers: She often uses the dagger she has to stab her opponents in the neck or throw them straight to an enemies' head.
  • Emotionless Girl: She always maintains the same unemotive and impassive expression, even in battle; earning her the moniker as The Ashen Demon. The reason she feels at ease around Goetia is because he can tell what she's thinking just by her eyes.
  • Friendless Background: She spent a majority of her life traveling with her father and band of mercenaries that she never made a friend. It doesn't help that her lack of emotions put off some of the mercenaries in her father's group that they were never really that close.
  • Hero of Another Story: While Goetia is the central character of the story, the mysteries surrounding Byleth, her connection to Sothis and the secrets of the Church are part of the focus.
  • Heroic RRoD: The strain of Sothis increasing her strength beyond her body's limit (Sothis even warning her of this) during the fight against Miklan causes Byleth to black out once the fight is over.
  • It's All My Fault: Downplayed. Like Sothis, she's glad they were able to save innocent peasants from being wrongfully executed for the attempted assassination of Rhea. But she feels guilty that Goetia was placed under house-arrest while she didn't receive any form of punishment for breaking into the dungeons with him.
  • Irony: The infamous "Ashen Demon" befriends Goetia, the former King of Demon Gods. For extra irony, he was the master of the 72 Ars Goetia demons, one which she coincidentally shares a name with.
  • Mama Bear: While Byleth was already annoyed with Goetia's tendencies to omit the full truth, the thing that caused their fallout is realizing that Goetia knew that Lysithea was secretly dying and hasn't cured her even though he could, causing her to storm out from the cafe they were in, disappointed and angered by Goetia's inactions.
  • Mistaken Identity: In Chapter 55, the Demon Pillar Sitri, who's possessing Aelfric, mistakes Byleth for a Psuedo-Servant.
  • Morality Chain: Gradually it is shown that she acts as one for Goetia, being the only person that he will listen to if he's going too far.
    • When Goetia questions Hapi on why she finds people using other people horrible (unaware about her past experiences), he starts edging on territories that make Hapi confused and uncomfortable on the matter. Even after Balthus tells him to stop, it's only when Byleth intervenes does he listen to her and stop his questioning.
  • Morality Pet: She's one of the few people that Goetia's close to, which the demon admits, regardless of if there's any Ship Tease or not.
  • Mundane Utility: Byleth is shown to use Divine Pulse to reverse minor injuries she accidentally gets when off-battle.
  • No Social Skills: Being raised as a mercenary for the majority of her life, Byleth's social skills are somewhat... lacking. She's not much of a talker, lacks tact and prefers to keep conversations short and simple, not to mention doesn't understand jokes. Sothis even says that she's worse in this than Goetia.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: Her signature teal hair turns to pale green like Rhea's as a result of becoming the Enlighted One because of Sitri's machinations leading to her transformation. For her part, Byleth's only real problem with her new hair color is that it will make it harder for her to blend in the dark.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Her name is an alternative version of Beleth, the thirteenth demon from Ars Goetia. Goetia didn't think much about her name when they first met until he learns that her mother was named Sitri, making him realize there is a possible connection between her name and Demon Pillar Beleth.
  • Secret-Keeper: After the events of Lonato's rebellion, she and Sothis get confirmation from Goetia himself that he isn't human. He still keeps what he is from them though, letting them find out by themselves.
  • Shipper on Deck: She's this In-Universe, at least in the "Matchmaker" omakes, though both Sothis and Goetia question why in the world she thought pairing Ashe with Catherine, i.e. the woman who turned over Ashe's brother to the Knights of Seiros and a Knight Templar, was a good idea.
  • Ship Tease: There are plenty of moments between her and Goetia. Byleth is one of the few people that Goetia considers to be important and that extends beyond her status as the vessel of the Goddess.
  • Shoo the Dog: She didn't want Goetia's aid at the start of the Cindered Shadows arc in order to prevent him from getting into more trouble with the Church because he's currently under house-arrest after the last time she and Sothis came to him for help. Needless to say, Goetia was not happy when he learns of this reason after Claude secretly sent Linhardt to fetch him.
  • Stern Teacher: Her stoicism and professionalism as a mercenary makes her come off as this to her students; taking her job very seriously and ensuring that her students learn how to survive in battle.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: According to Aelfric, she looks a lot like her late mother, Sitri.
  • Terse Talker: She tends to speak in short and brief sentences only when necessary. This is the reason Goetia doesn't mind talking to her as she doesn't beat around the bushes and goes straight to the point.
  • Tranquil Fury:
    • When she learns that Claude disobeyed her orders to not get Goetia involved, she remains emotionless, but her cornering the Golden Deer Leader makes it clear she isn't happy at all.
    • She retains her calm demeanor throughout Chapter 84, but the narration makes it clear she's getting irritated with Goetia dodging her questions and his tendencies to omit certain details. This all cumulates with her realizing that Goetia knew about Lysithea's condition but did nothing to fix it, leading her to be disappointed in Goetia and coldy calling him a 'self-centered bastard' before walking away.
  • What Is This Feeling?:
    • Because of her troubles of expressing emotions, she has trouble of recognizing the feeling of fear, which she felt first when she was abducted by Demon Pillar Sitri and when her father plans for them to leave the Monastery after learning what Rhea did to his daughter.
    • During Chapter 84, Byleth starts to notice that she's getting increasingly agitated at Goetia for him avoiding her questions about Demi-Servants, realizing that she's experiencing anger.
    • After her talk with Sothis, she realizes she may be too hard on Goetia about his slow adaption to human morality due to staying to his alien views for a long time, feeling a heavy weight in her gut. Sothis had to point out she's feeling guilt.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: In Chapter 84, when attempting to learn more regarding her "Demi-Servant" status from Goetia, she gets fed up with his habit of omitting the truth and apparent apathy, noting that at least Rhea, for all of her questionable decisions, cared about the people of Fodlan along with Sitri, Jeralt and Byleth.
  • Worf Had the Flu: The Demon Pillar sharing her mother's name targeted her while she and everyone were caught off guard by the reveal of the demon, ensuring she does not have a chance to fight back. Demon Pillar Sitri even comment the fact she still hasn't awaken to her full potential made it easier for it to abduct her with the Ashen Wolves.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: When Sothis worries she might have been a bad Goddess after The Reveal of her true nature as a Machine God, Byleth reassures her that she did the best she could and that she can't blame herself for what she doesn't remember since the current Sothis might be different from her past self as a Machine God.
    Byleth: Sothis... I trust you.
Sothis: (moved to tears) ... Thank you.

    Sothis

Sothis

A mysterious, amnesiac girl who resides within Byleth's mind and the source of her new powers. Byleth is the only one who can see and interact with her, but that changes when they learn that Goetia can also see Sothis. Initially wary of Goetia since sensing his demonic nature in Remire Village, Sothis advices Byleth to keep an eye on him.

  • Accidental Innuendo: In-Universe example. She understandably freaks out after being outright told by Goetia that the Sword of the Creator was made from her bones, she has the horrible realization that Goetia not only knew about this, but also touched it when they first showed it to him.
Sothis: You-you ran your fingers all over my body! And you knew about it!
Goetia: That is a disturbing but not inaccurate way of phrasing it.
  • Achievements in Ignorance: Unlike her Three Hopes counterpart, she discovers her ability to possess Byleth completely by accident when trying to awake the latter from Sitri's attacks.
  • Adaptational Abomination: In the original, she is all but stated to be an otherworldly divine dragon. In this this setting, her true nature is an Olympian, creating her current humanoid avatar and discarding her original mechanical body somewhere in Fodlan.
  • Amnesiac Hero: She lost all of her memories and other than her name, she doesn't know who she is. She doesn't even know that she's the Goddess of Fodlan.
  • Ancient Astronauts: She arrived in Fodlan in the ancient past from the stars. There are hints that she was an Aletheian like the Olympus Gods in the Nasuverse.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Throughout the earlier parts of the story, all she wanted was to know who she was and how she ended up in Byleth's mind. She eventually got the full story from Rhea and it isn't entirely pleasant, including the discovery of her past self being a Machine God. Sothis does acknowledge that the truth she was seeking might not be something she would like just as Goetia warned her about.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Acting as Byleth's conscious, she's this whenever the professor is thinking of weird ideas.
  • Condescending Compassion: Not currently, but in the past. While Rhea claims that Sothis did loved humans and helped them advanced, there are some hints that past Sothis saw humans as "thinking reeds" who can't help themselves. Which makes sense considering the reveal that she's an Olympian like Zeus.
  • Detect Evil: The reason why Sothis was suspicious towards Goetia at the beginning was because she sensed that something was off with him. She advices Byleth to keep an eye on him to discover what he is.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite her overall distrust and disdain towards Rhea, she refuses to go along with Goetia's plan to manipulate Rhea into letting Goetia renovate the Abyss by taking advantage of her mother issues.
Sothis: You… No. I refuse. I'm not going to dangle false hope in front of that desperate woman, I'm not… I can't be what she wants me to be right now, and I am certainly not going to trick her into believing that doing favors for me is going to improve my opinion of her!
  • Failed Attempt at Drama: After realizing she accidentally took control of Byleth's body, she decides to head to the battlefield to help Goetia. Though given she's still amnesiac and has trouble walking (not helped that Byleth wears heeled boots), she ends up tripping and falling face flat on the ground. This prompts her to beg Byleth to not mention this to Goetia.
  • Gaia's Vengeance: In the distant past, the ancient Agarthan civilization with help from their old gods, strike back against Sothis in their hubris. Sothis responds in kind by wiping out the entire civilization and the old gods, the remaining people of the Agarthans hiding underground and forming a cult that plots revenge against her and her children.
  • Good Is Not Soft: While she sympathizes with Goetia's turmoil of being forced to kill his own kin, Sothis admits that Goetia did what had to be done, considering Sitri refused to listen to reason and intended to kill as many humans as possible that the only way to stop it is to kill it.
  • Heroic BSoD: Sothis has become sullen and quiet after learning the circumstances behind Byleth's birth and the revelation of Rhea's failed attempts at resurrecting her. She has since then withdrawn herself in the back of Byleth's mind, rarely speaking. When she does speak however, it sounds dejected.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation:
    • Sothis develops this due to events that lead to her learning of her true identity and relation with Rhea much earlier compared to the games. Combined with her current amnesiac self, Sothis feels that she fails to live up to the expectations that people have on her; she's helpless as her 'people' fight each other over their belief of her, her time power is currently limited, and her lack of memories means she doesn't have the knowledge she supposedly had as the Progenitor God.
    • Upon finding out on what her past self is capable of, she surmises that she was a terrible Goddess to the point where all of ancient Fodlan decided to rebel against her.
  • I Hate Past Me: After learning about her past nature as a Machine God, Sothis briefly wonders what her past self was like and admits with shame that she guesses it was similar to back when Goetia was the Demon God King— arrogant, views every human beneath her despite wanting to help them, and a completely alien morality.
  • I Have No Son!: Has this attitude towards Rhea/Seiros upon meeting her, both due to her Identity Amnesia meaning she has no memory of her, and for disapproval of her less than savory actions, including the circumstances of her resurrection.
  • It's All My Fault: It's downplayed. While she's glad that they were able to prevent the wrongful executions of the innocent peasants who were controlled to assassinate the Archbishop, she still feels guilty for Goetia being placed under house-arrest after she and Byleth convinced him to aid them in getting evidence to prove the peasants' innocence, even after he warned them of the consequences that will follow.
  • Little Miss Snarker: She has a sharp tongue for a little girl and often has snarking battles with Goetia.
  • The Load: Goetia considers her as an in-universe example. Despite being the one who granted Byleth her Divine Pulse ability, currently it is limited with a few usages and the time range it affects is marginally short. Likely because he speculates that she's the Goddess of Fodlan, Goetia finds her current state to be disappointing and doesn't hide that fact to her when given the chance. She does acknowledge this criticism to her shortcomings, not that she would admit that Goetia's right to his face. This is the reason Goetia complained to her when he sees her in control of Byleth's body, lacking her memories and Byleth's combat experience heavily hinders her and she does indeed initially struggle against Sitri. It is also the reason why Sitri doesn't view her as a threat despite being a Divine Spirit. She does eventually get the hang of it and uses her Divine Pulse to help Goetia.
  • Mechanical Abomination: It turns out that Sothis' true nature is an Olympian, like the Greek Gods that Goetia is familiar with in the Nasuverse.
  • Mythology Gag: Goetia calls Sothis a 'Useless Goddess' in Chapter 58. The same insulting nickname that is strongly associated with Ishtar.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: It turns out the reason Miklan was unaffected by Divine Pulse to an extent was because Sothis accidentally pulls him in when using that ability, stemming from the fact he has taken the Evlogia, which made him similar to Byleth that it confuses Sothis' senses.
  • Oh, Crap!: She is shocked when she and Byleth discover that Miklan somehow gained the means to be immune to Divine Pulse, similar to Goetia.
  • Older Than They Look: She appears as a young child, but her speech and nature suggest that she's much older, if not as old as Goetia.
  • One-Man Army: During the war against the Agarthans, the old gods that they used to worship joined in the battle, ganging up against Sothis in hopes of reclaiming their place. The war ends with every single God killed by Sothis.
  • Only Sane Man: Between Goetia and Byleth, Sothis seems to be the only one between the three to have more common sense. This is shown in Chapter 85 where she has a heart-to-heart talk with Goetia in hopes of clearing the misunderstanding between him and Byleth.
  • Physical Goddess: Goetia theorizes that given with her status as the Goddess of Fodlan and her time-based powers, Sothis would've been a powerhouse when she was alive. With the reveal of her true nature of being a Machine God, this shows that her power level was on par with Zeus.
  • Properly Paranoid: She doesn't hide the fact that she finds Goetia suspicious, since she sensed that he wasn't human to begin with. To top it off, not only is he immune to Divine Pulse's effects, but he's also the other person besides Byleth who can see and hear Sothis. Since she doesn't know what Goetia is, Sothis advises Byleth to keep a close eye on him.
  • Strong, but Unskilled: She's shown to be capable of suplexing a Demon Pillar in Byleth's body and is able to use Divine Pulse to stop time for a few seconds to give Goetia the advantage. But she faces a similar problem like in Three Hopes, which comes with lacking Byleth's combat experience and still being amnesiac.
  • Time Master: The source of Byleth's Divine Pulse ability, allowing Byleth to rewind time a bit. Goetia believes if Sothis was at full power, she can affect time in a greater scale. When she accidentally possessed Byleth when attempting to wake her, her Divine Pulse changes to stopping time for a few seconds.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • When she learns Goetia's plan to get Rhea to make him the new overseer of Abyss involves using her to manipulate the Archbishop, Sothis calls Goetia out for being no different from Rhea and tells him to his face that he should get into Rhea's good grace on his own.
    • She and Rhea are less than amused when Goetia barged into Rhea's room, disregarding the fact that the latter was in the middle of changing her clothes.
  • You Can See Me?: She's shock to learn that Goetia can see and hear her, and just when she earlier voiced her suspicion over him.
