    In General
  • Abusive Precursors:
    • They are the reason for Rhea's insistence on maintaining Fodlan's slow progress in development, the Agarthans being an example on what happens when a civilization advances too fast.
    • Their actions are what caused the corrupt Crest System to spring up in the first place, thanks to them assisting Nemesis in his genocide against the Nabateans and fashioning the "Holy Relics" and Crests from slaughtered Nabateans.
  • Dying Race: During the interlude, their benefactor concluded that the slow degradation of their numbers and the increasingly flawed enhancements that the remaining Agarthans will be wiped out if they don't make changes. But because of their arrogance, they aren't able to see that something is wrong and are unlikely to change, dooming the entire race. And that is not taking into account on what happens if they find a way to piss off Goetia, something their benefactor takes note of.
  • Fantastic Racism:
    • They loathe Sothis and her children, including anyone remotely connected to her, like Byleth.
    • Their treatment towards humans always has them referring to them as 'beasts', due to viewing them as creations of Sothis. Not even foreigners, like Goetia, are exempted from this, being called an insect by Thales and Solon.
    • Even though they partnered with a benefactor who helps with their plans, they tolerate him at best, calling him as 'that thing' because of his status as a Demon Pillar.
  • Hate Sink: Like in canon. In a story where the central protagonist was a former Beast who instigated the Incineration of Humanity out of a twisted sense of love for humanity, the Agarthans as a whole are unpleasant turbo-racists who caused plenty of tragedy in Fodlan either out of petty spite against Sothis or sheer sadism towards the humans above, relishing on their suffering.
  • Humanity Is Superior: Because they view themselves as the 'real' humans, they seek to wipe out the non-humans and the inferior 'humans' at the surface.
  • Kill and Replace: One of the common methods that is often used by high-ranking agents which involves kidnapping and killing real people and having the agent impersonate as that person via possessing the corpse. Sitri possessing and impersonating Aelfric for months without anyone noticing the change, eerily reminds Edelgard of the Agarthans because of the similarities.
  • The Man Behind the Man: They work behind the shadows, manipulating events in Fodlan in a long-term plan to retake the surface world and kill off the remaining Children of the Goddess.
  • Mole Men: They reside underground within the remnants of Shambala.
  • A Nazi by Any Other Name: They waged a genocidal war in the past and to this day, seek the extinction of a certain race, conducted multiple unethical and immoral human experimentations and racists against anyone not of their own, deeming humans and non-humans sub-beasts.
  • Never My Fault: The race as a whole never once consider that the reason they were nearly annihilated by Sothis and forced underground in the first place was because they had the "brilliant" idea of attacking her and her children simply because they thought they were superior to her, even though it was Sothis who helped uplifted them with her knowledge and technology in the first place. Instead, they blame it all on Sothis, her children and the humans on the surface rather than admit to their faults— viewing themselves as flawless. Lemegeton views this is an attribute to why there are fewer numbers of them.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: The Agarthans were once a technological advanced race and to this day are still in possession of advanced technology, mystic arts and weaponry. To the people of Fodlan, who are stuck with medieval tech and system, the Agarthans' dark magic and technology are beyond their understanding. To Goetia, who has seen plenty of Advanced Ancient Humans, multiple gods, entities and various powerful mages, the Agarthans' magic is deemed pathetic to him. Even their benefactor shares this opinion, though they seem to make an exception with Epimenides.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Despite having the common goal of wiping out Sothis' remaining children and the humans on the surface, the faction as a whole don't seem to get along well with each other, with Thales valuing his troops if they are useful to him and Solon looking down on the younger generation. Kronya herself is aware that neither party like each other that much and it is one of the reasons she quickly agreed to Goetia's deal on top of her life being threatened.
  • Underestimating Badassery: They have a bad habit of looking down on others due to their superiority complex towards other races not their own. One particular example of this is Thales and Kronya dismissing Goetia as a mere insect because of his status as a foreigner. Even after the former Beast displayed his powers by killing an enhanced Demonic Beast they sent to kill the Golden Deer, they simply call him a powerful insect who can be dealt at their leisure. It is this trait that lead Lemegeton to beat Thales to a pulp and usurp control in his operations; knowing full well the consequences of this trope.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: In the past, Sothis uplifted them with knowledge and technology that made them into an advanced civilization. They respond to Sothis' help by trying to kill her and her children out of sense of superiority.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: Each member has a tendency to make their own plans without telling the others, with the others not caring unless it negatively affects. This is precisely why their benefactor decided to step up in the leadership role the minute he heard that Goetia's in Fodlan.

    Thales
The leader of the Agarthans. He finds himself partnered with a being who promises to help them, though with an agenda of their own.
  • 0% Approval Rating: Thanks to his Smug Snake and You Have Outlived Your Usefulness tendencies extending to his underlings, it's no surprise that most of his fellow Agarthans barely respect him at all, considering that most of them don't even step in when he suffers a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown from Lemegeton.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: He was the one who masterminded many of the tragedies in Fodlan, the Crest experimentation and the Tragedy of Duscur being the notable ones, but he is nothing compared to Goetia and Lemegeton, the former would've annihilated them if he was given a reason to do so and the latter soon usurping command from him once he finds out Goetia's alive in Fodlan.
  • Break the Haughty: He was beaten an inch of his life by Lemegeton for failing to notify him of Goetia's existence in Fodlan and last Myson has heard of Thales, the Agarthan leader has been holed up in his room after his recovery, refusing to see anyone.
  • Dead Person Impersonation: He is currently taking on the identity of Arundel, Edelgard's uncle.
  • Pointy-Haired Boss: Even though he is the leader of the Agarthans, several have shown to have a clear disdain for his leadership, none of them stepping in when Lemegeton beats him up and taking up leadership in their operations from him.
  • Smug Snake: Like his fellow Agarthans, he generally looks down on the 'surface-dwellers' and non-humans, even after a certain foreign mage quickly kills the Enhanced Demonic Beast he sent to kill the Golden Deer, he still deems the foreigner as an insect that can be dealt at any time. Once he finds out Goetia's existence in Fodlan, Lemegeton berates Thales on thinking he was somehow better than the 'vagrant foreign mage'.

    Solon
A high-ranking elderly mage whose cunningness and dedication to push beyond magical and science boundaries makes him a dangerous individual. He is currently impersonating the librarian, Tomas.
  • Dead Person Impersonation: He and his group killed the real Tomas some time after his retirement, with Solon taking on his appearance when he made his "return".
  • Evil Old Folks: He is stated to be one of the older Agarthans, but age hasn't hindered his cruelty.
  • Jerkass at Your Discretion: While pretending to be Tomas, he puts on the act of a kind librarian to the people in Garreg Mach Monastery, but once alone, he drops the act and assumes his real personality as Solon. One example is when he offers to close up and allows Goetia, who has been under house-arrest, to leave early, the minute Goetia and the guards out of the library, Solon loses his 'Tomas' facade and expresses annoyance at how the surveillance in the library has constrained his movement.
  • Scary Librarian: Only inverted in his guise as 'Tomas'. As Tomas, he's an affable and kind elderly who is willing to help students, which Bernedetta finds comforting compared to Goetia's inapproachable and commanding demeanor, which intimidates her. Though Solon plays this straight given that he is plotting against the Chruch.
  • Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: In his 'Tomas' guise, he is presented as the kind, elderly librarian that is friendly to everyone, including Goetia; hiding his real idenitiy as the cruel and sociopathic Solon. Goetia is the only one to see through his disguise and the only reason he hasn't out him yet is because it didn't affect him at the time.

    Kronya
A cruel and sadistic young woman who has a childish enjoyment for killing.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: For all her sadism of killing others and watching others squirm, once Goetia easily backs her into a corner, she becomes terrified of the former demon and starts begging for her life.
  • Axe-Crazy: She is a little too enthusiastic about killing and has to struggle to keep her bloodthirsty nature in check while posing as a sister in the Monastery. Even then, several people note that the new sister is weird.
  • Blood Knight: She has an unquenchable desire to kill that even in disguise, Goetia can sense her killing intent with his back turn. This does hinder her ability to maintain her disguise, struggling not to kill someone in anger.
  • Break the Haughty: Chapter 104 is basically her being a punching bag for Goetia, the proud and sadistically cruel Kronya being reduced to a terrified wreck who pathetically begs for her life once Goetia makes it clear he can easily kill her if he wanted to, agreeing to his demands to be his spy for the Agarthans.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Her sense of superiority as an Agarthan has her generally looking down at other races, which includes their latest benefactor, even though she knows how powerful he is. She even barely remembers his name. Lemegeton makes it clear that his patience will wear thin if she continues to push her luck.
  • Dirty Coward: For all her arrogance and boasting, the minute she gets overwhelmed, she would run away if she cannot kill her target. This is the reason Goetia why decides to interrogate her first, reasoning that she is easier to intimidate unlike Tomas/Solon. True enough, once Goetia displays how much control he has over her and how he can easily end her life, Kronya is reduced to pathetically begging for her life, agreeing to his deal.
  • Double Agent: She was originally sent under the guise of a nun to spy on Edelgard and the students and learn more about Byleth's condition, but after being 'interrogated' by Goetia, she is forced to become his spy for the Agarthans under the deal that he will not kill her nor out her to Rhea for the time being. Being terrified of him, in addition to Goetia neither being a Nabatean or a human from Fodlan, Kronya reluctantly agrees to his demands.
  • Evil Feels Good: She relishes on how much she enjoys killing and the suffering of 'surface dwellers'. On the other hand, she absolutely hates her disguise as Sister Wiebke, finding the nice girl act to be revolting to act out.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: It's pretty clear that even her fellow Agarthans like Thales and Solon can barely stand her, and their benefactor can barely tolerate her. Surprisingly, Kronya is aware that no one likes her and vice-versa.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Being from a group who believe their own superiority above everyone else, Kronya does not want to appear weak or being looked down by her fellow Agarthans, hating Solon's condescending attitude towards her. Though given how easily she caved into Goetia's threats, Solon's view on her isn't unfounded.
  • Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique: Finds herself being subjected to this by Goetia, who wants to learn the perspective of the Agarthans during their war between the Nabateans.
  • Jerkass: Just like in canon, though as Sister Wiebke she is forced to hide that part of her while playing her role.
  • Meaningful Name: Her guise goes by the name Wiebke, which is German for 'fighter'.
  • Nun Too Holy: As 'Sister Wiebke', she is an up and coming cleric and a scribe, which greatly contrasts with her true cruel and nasty personality.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: She is implied to be older than her appearance of an 18-year old girl, yet she is hyperactive and bloodthirsty, showing childish cruelty towards other people's suffering.
  • Psycho Knife Nut: An unhinged killer, her weapon preference are knives, even keeping in her person as Sister Wiebke.
  • Smug Snake: The rest of the Agarthans have this, but she is particularly guilty of this. She generally looks down on being she considers inferior to her, which includes Lemegeton and Goetia. Case in point, her first encounter with Goetia results her in being easily disarmed, analyzed and her memories of the incident wiped out from her mind. And then Chapter 104 just shows how easily Goetia outmatched her during his interrogation.
  • Villains Want Mercy: After looking down on the "exotic rat", she has the nerve to beg for her life when she's at Goetia's mercy.

    Myson
A prominent member of those who slither.
