    André

André the Dark Lum Lord

The Big Bad of Rayman 3. The original Black Lum, and ruler of the race as a whole. He can change Red Lums into other Black Lums just by touching them. His goal is to transform the energy of the Core of the World into Hoodlums to Take Over the World. That plan soon went down the crapper when Globox accidentally swallowed him, setting up the events for the game.

  • Aerith and Bob: In a world full of "Rayman", "Globox", "Bégoniax", we get... André.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: He outright pleads for his life after Reflux is beaten, and even screams to Globox for help.
  • Ambition Is Evil: He makes it clear from the start that he intends to conquer the world, first trying to reach the Heart of the World, and then later uses the Leptys power to reach his goal.
  • Ax-Crazy: Very violent and loves violence and gore, especially if it's Globox who may be the victim.
  • Big Bad: Of Rayman 3.
  • The Corrupter: He turns Reflux against his king and people, preying on his desire to get revenge on Rayman to convince him to steal the Leptys Scepter in exchange of delivering him Rayman.
  • The Corruption: He is this to Red Lums, turning them into Black Lums with merely a touch.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He has a very dry wit and makes a lot of sarcastic comments over the story, mostly at the expense of Globox.
  • Dirty Coward: André is very arrogant and looks down on everyone, but the moment he's actually in danger he immediately flees or pleads for his life, pathetically begging Rayman to spare him after he's finally cornered, and even begging Globox for help despite how much contempt and hatred he has for him.
  • Enraged by Idiocy: He is often exasperated by Globox' stupidity, constantly insulting and mocking him as a result. He is also annoyed when Reflux only replies to him with "Yes Andy!" after getting the Leptys'power, asking him if he can't say something else, to which Reflux replies "No Andy!".
  • Evil Has a Bad Sense of Humor: He does attempt humour, but his brand of humour is solely Black Comedy, chiefly at the expense of Globox.
  • Jerkass: He's obnoxious to everyone.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: After Rayman is given the ability to turn Hoodlums back into Red Lums by grimacing at them, André wastes no time getting away from him after finally getting out of Globox' body, and does everything he can to avoid a direct confrontation with Rayman for the rest of the game.
  • Laughably Evil: In spite of his monstrous nature, Andre has a lot of hilariously mean insults aimed at everyone and loves making wisecracks, making him a comic relief for a good portion of 3's story.
  • Monster Progenitor: The original Black Lum who created every other Black Lum in the game.
  • The Napoleon: An evil little Lum with a huge temper to match.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: Being a tiny Lum, he's not much of a physical threat, to say the least. After Reflux is beaten, André is cornered and begs for his life.
  • Orcus on His Throne: He spends a large amount of the game trapped within Globox's belly, not doing much directly and leaving the work to his army.
  • Post-Final Boss: He is technically the last enemy in the game, but by that point you have effectively won since he's completely defenseless and Reflux before him was the Final Boss proper.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: An evil Black Lum with red eyes who created all the other Black Lums and wants to use them to take over the world.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Has piercing red eyes and is a real nasty piece of work.
  • Sealed Inside a Person-Shaped Can: He spends a large amount of the game trapped within Globox's stomach.
  • Shout-Out: "Buzz off, fairy! Zelda needs you!"
  • Smug Snake: André is incredibly arrogant and rude to others, constantly insulting and mocking others, and has the ambition to conquer the world, but when he's in actual danger he becomes a pathetic coward.
  • The Unfought: Potentially overlaps with Anti-Climax Boss. You do get to defeat him yourself — by performing the 'Grimace' command and turning him back into a Red Lum.
  • Tom the Dark Lord: He gets the nicknames "Dédé" (in French) and "Andy" (in English), and even his standard name is pretty mundane compared to the likes of Rayman and Globox.
  • Villainous Breakdown: When Rayman finally corners him.
NO! DON'T TOUCH ME! NO! NO! GLOBOX! HELP MEEE! I'M SCARED! NO!
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: After finally escaping Globox's body, despite having lost the opportunity to reach the Heart of the World and now facing the threat of Rayman having the power to turn Hoodlums back into Red Lums, André is able to quickly mount a new plan for world domination, by convincing Reflux to steal his king scepter to get revenge on Rayman, and by using the Leptys power in order to duplicate himself to infinity.

    Hoodlums (in General)

The Hoodlums

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hoodlum_army.png
André's army. Originally Red Lums, they turned into evil Black Lums because of hate and fear, or André touching them. They are harmless in their Lum form, but by harvesting wool and cloth from wild animals, they can gather together and form the sack-like Hoodlums.
  • Airborne Mook: The Hoodstormer, Lavomatrixes, and Hoodloons.
  • Barrier Warrior: The Hoodoos.
  • Humongous Mecha: The Hoodstomper and Céloche.
  • I Have Many Names: Most of them Hoodlums have different names, albeit mentiond the official strategy guide.
    • Hoodmonger Officer are also named Elite Mongers.
    • Celoche can occasionally be called Leviathan.
    • Hoodloons are also known as Flapoteurs.
    • Hoodmonger Officers, a.k.a. Elite Mongers.
    • Hoodmonger Soldiers are sometimes named Artillerymen or Hoodstylers.
    • The basic Hoodmongers can be named as Hoodblasters.
    • Master Kaag can sometimes be named as Hoodstomper.
    • Lavomatrixes are sometimes named Agitators or Lavicrafts.
    • Spinneroos are also called Kagguards or Hoodlocks.
  • The Goomba: The Slapdashes. They only have one hitpoint, are the only enemies without projectile attacks, and cannot block your attacks at all. The only thing they have on their side is the element of surprise.
  • Laughing Mad: The Hoodbooms, every time they toss their signature grenades.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: The Grim Keepers.
  • Scary Stitches: All of them have the appearance of life-size, stitched ragdolls, sometimes borderlining on Scary Scarecrow.
  • Schizo Tech: They manage to outfit toilets and washing machines as weapons, in the latter case, flying weapons, no less.
  • The Unintelligible: No one can understand what they say. They usually express themselves through the surprise of Rayman bumping into them so it might be understood as "get him", "kill him" or the like.
  • Weapon Twirling: Many classes of Hoodlum do this to block Rayman's attacks.
    • There is also the Spineroos, who, get too close and they will knock you down.

    Master Kraag / The Hoodstomper

Master Kraag / The Hoodstomper

The first true boss in the game, a Hoodlum who controls a bizarre mecha made of two giant feet who will try to stomp Rayman to death.

A proud and powerful warrior and the Knaaren champion. Rayman is forced to face him in the Desert of the Knaaren to prove his worth to the Knaaren King. After his defeat, he teams up with André to get his revenge on Rayman and steals his king's Leptys sceptre, growing even more powerful.

  • Big Bad Duumvirate: He teams up with André after his first defeat, after being convinced of betraying his king and to get his revenge on Rayman.
  • Brain Food: Intends to eat Rayman's after he's done with him, even stating that he likes clever people because their brains are apparently tastier.
  • Clipped-Wing Angel: In order to increase his power, he lodges the crystal of Leptys into his back. This causes him to grow to a massive size, but also forces him to freeze in place to recharge his energy and renders him unable to speak (as he only roars during the fight), before he eventually crystalizes and shatters.
  • Final Boss: Of Hoodlum Havoc and Hoodlums' Revenge.
  • Irony: The Knaaren are invulnerable; all Rayman can do is run away from them, because he has no way to defeat them. Reflux is the Knaaren's champion and the mightiest of them all, but he is also the only Knaaren Rayman can actually defeat in combat, and the only Knaaren he'll actually kill in the entire game. As a result, for all his might and how powerful he eventually grows, from a gameplay perspective, he's actually weaker than the regular Knaaren Rayman has to evade throughout the Desert level.
  • Literally Shattered Lives: How he meets his end in Hoodlum Havoc, turning to crystal and then shattering.
  • Magic Staff: The staff he initially carries, before stealing the sceptre of the Leptys.
  • Marathon Boss: The final battle with him in Hoodlum Havoc has four separate phases until he finally goes down for good.
  • One-Winged Angel: In the Final Battle, when he uses his scepter to absorb the energy of the Leptys. He even pulls this multiple times, sticking the scepter's crystal on his back and becoming more and more gigantic and monstrous as the fight goes on.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Reflux pushes two Knaarens out of his way to fight Rayman himself.
  • Phlebotinum Overdose: Using the power of the Leptys too much without being able to absorb Hoodlums for energy is what causes him to turn into crystal and shatter at the end.
  • Power Gives You Wings: He sprouts two massive wings made of flesh and purple energy when transitioning into his final phase.
  • Power Makes Your Voice Deep: In his One-Winged Angel form.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: Is the strongest in a whole species of them.
  • Recurring Boss: In Rayman 3 alone he's fought twice, once in the Knaaren city and again as the Final Boss.
  • Revenge: Becomes bent on revenge after losing to Rayman, humiliated by his defeat. It drives him to team up with André.
  • Shock and Awe: In the first phase of the final boss battle, he summons lightning in rapid succession to try smiting Rayman.

    King Gumsi

Gumsi, King of the Knaaren

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gumsi.jpg

Voiced by: Marc Saez (French)

The diminutive king of the Knaaren.

  • Cool Crown: Wears a crown with four horns that's about as tall as he is.
  • Mister Big: He's the king of the scary Knaaren, and he's hilariously short compared to the average Knaaren individual.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Once Rayman wins his duel against Reflux, Gumsi respects him and even empowers him, and frees Globox. Moreover, he's not one to use the power of the Leptys to nefarious ends, unlike Reflux.
  • Super-Empowering: It's him who gives Rayman the power to turn Black Lums into Red Lums by sticking his tongue out.

Independent Villains

    Bégoniax

Begoniax

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rayman_3_begoniax.png
A witch who lives in the Bog of Murk.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: Towards Razoff.
  • Acrofatic: She manages to hop across her swamp on the lilypads within seconds after Rayman encounters her, and she's much faster than him.
  • Chasing Your Tail: Her boss fight consists of her and Rayman chasing each other around a bubbling cauldron.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: She wants to kill Rayman because he accidentally crashed into the toilet outhouse she was "busy" inside.
  • Fluffy the Terrible: "Begonia" is the name of a flower.
  • Forced Transformation: The potion she prepares can turn Rayman into a frog.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Rayman can shoot in her cauldron to turn her into a frog for a few seconds just as she does against him.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Don't let her appearance fool you; she is fast.
  • Lone Wolf Boss: Despite appearing alongside the Hoodlum army in artwork, she's never seen to be in cahoots with them and acts of her own accord.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: She calls Rayman a pervert, and says what seems to be 'Dammit!' when hit as a frog, which, for a Rayman game, is surprisingly colourful language.
  • Wicked Witch: She's a witch who lives in a swamp and turns people into frogs.

    Razoff

Count Razoff Shoedsackovski

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rayman_3_razoff.png

Voiced by: Martial Le Minoux (French), Eric Bauza (English)

The last descendant of the royal Shoedsackovskaïa family of maniacal hunters, Count Razoff is a tall green reptilian creature who lives in a mansion in the Bog of Murk. Dressed in a red and gold outfit, he sports a shotgun which shoots arrows at any intruders that dare to enter his mansion.

  • Ambiguously Human: He has a similar-looking face to the Teensies, but is far taller, and speaks differently to them too. He seems more closely related to the lizard-like creatures in Rayman: The Animated Series, such as Inspector Grub.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: He seems to be of nobility, and is a cruel sadist who enjoys hunting fully sentient beings.
  • Dirty Coward: Runs away any time Rayman starts gaining the upper hand on him, and tries to snipe Rayman from a safe position in-between direct confrontations during the Boss Battle.
  • Egomaniac Hunter: Oh boy, yes. He has portraits of himself everywhere in his manor, be it statues or paintings, and constantly taunts Rayman on how he hunted games bigger than him as he chases him to turn him into a trophy.
  • "Get Back Here!" Boss: Every time Rayman gets the upper hand, he makes a run for it.
  • Hunting the Most Dangerous Game: He wants to hunt Rayman. The same Rayman that's saved the world from evil at least twice over, and the same Rayman that would go on to beat up the champion of a race of invincible psychopaths. Put it this way, he's got his work cut out for him.
  • Lone Wolf Boss: Again, like Bégoniax, he has his own reasons for fighting Rayman and he's not allied to anyone. The Hoodlums even try to besiege his manor's entrance.
  • Mythology Gag: His mansion is decorated with statues of his "finest catches", including Ssssam, the watersnake from Rayman 2.
  • Shout-Out: His name and Egomaniac Hunter/Hunting the Most Dangerous Game tendencies are pretty obviously inspired by Count Zaroff from The Most Dangerous Game.

Alternative Title(s): Rayman 3
