Shinji: You've been what?! - Rin does this in Fate/Stay Night: Ultimate Master when she learns that Shirou allowed Ben to help him take Saber to the Emiya residence. (To explain, Rin doesn't really trust Ben and thinks he's just more competition for the Holy Grail.) Her "WHAT?!" is so loud that echoes throughout the neighborhood, waking several children and pets.

- J-WITCH Series: In "An Anonymous New Evil", this is Phobos' reaction when Nerissa reveals that he's not the one she's in the Infinite City prison to free.

(Avatar: The Last Airbender & Harry Potter): Cedric yells one when his widowed mother mentions that she's started dating again. - In The renegade hero!!!....Invader Zim?, this is Zim's reaction to learning that he's viewed as a heroic rebel by the rest of the universe.
- Shadows over Meridian:
- The Guardians exclaim this when Elyon informs them that Kage has released Phobos.
- The Guardians (other than Will, who along with Elyon is giving them the news) react this way twice in Chapter 7, first when told that the Oracle is ordering them back to Earth for their own safety, and then upon learning that Nerissa used to be a Guardian.
- Caleb gives one in Chapter 10, upon learning that the Guardians have been banned from returning to Meridian by the Oracle.
- Vathek and Drake have a simultaneous one when Yoruichi informs them about the soldiers who've decided to slaughter all of Cavigor's inmates.
- Vera Bexley's reaction in Chapter 19 when the northern army captains learn of Phobos' escape from the Infinite City.
- Jade has this in Chapter 20 when she's informed that contrary to her expectations, the rebel army has withdrawn from the mountains.
- Amelia has a couple in Chapter 22, when Vera plans to continue on their mission despite the possible presence of a highly dangerous predator in their path.
- This is Metalbeak's reaction in Chapter 27 when he learns from Windblade that their son is among the hatchlings that went to play in the northern tunnels, close to where an explosion just shook the mountain.
- Amelia and Vathek have a simultaneous one when Tinsley tells them in Chapter 31 that Vera has initiated the Prison Riot in an effort to assassinate Kage.
- When Albel and Idina Bexley inform her fellow noble figureheads of Castwell's Peak about the recent events, they have this reaction twice, first when they learn of Phobos' escape from the Infinite City and then upon being told that Vera has taken their children on her renegade mission.
- Amelia has this reaction in Chapter 32 upon learning that Vera tried to kill Caroline in the previous chapter.
- In Chapter 34, Zekiel has this reaction to being informed that his prisoners include an 8-year-old human girl. He has another when Raythor reveals he's recently been in Riverdeen.
- Turnabout Storm (Ace Attorney & My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic): Has several of these. Most of them come from Phoenix Wright's reactions at really weird events, such as being greeted by a purple talking hors... pony, or his phone ringing in said pony's cellphone-less world.
- XCOM: Second Contact: Tevos' reaction upon learning that XCOM allied with the Geth almost immediately after declaring war on them. Pretty much all of the Citadel species have the same reaction.
- In With this Ring... (Green Lantern), Hector Hammond is crushing Hal Jordan telekinetically without realizing he's broadcasting his thoughts telepathically, which is because he shouts a loud "What?" when he hears Hal's voice in his head.This time, the Lantern was doomed.

- Vegeta has this reaction to finding out that Dodoria's a woman.Dodoria: I am a woman!

Vegeta: ...WHAT?! - Also a minor case with Piccolo in the Lord Slug abridged version when he rips his own ears out so Gohan can whistle Slug into submission, and thus starts all of his sentences with one of these since he can't hear anyone (or himself).
- When Goku throws Cell a Senzu Bean to heal him so he can have a fair fight with Gohan, Krillin, Piccolo and Yamcha yell out a Big "NO!", Big "WHAT?!" and Big "WHY?!" in that order.
- Vegeta has this reaction to finding out that Dodoria's a woman.

- Abraxas (Hrodvitnon): Tejada follows up on her Flat "What" with one when she learns that Ghidorah's decapitated head in the Elaborate Underground Base which she was hoping to see destroyed has disappeared.
- The author made a non-canon post where the Abraxas Vivienne explodes with this upon learning from her "Graham Lives" counterpart that Monarch in the latter Vivienne's universe are keeping Ghidorah's severed left head preserved instead of destroying it.
- She also made another non-canon crossover post where Ren Serizawa from Abraxas meets his canon self, and the former has a Big "What" when he's horrified by Canon Ren revealing his evil plans to him.

- In Boys and Girls, Lori Loud says, "You WHAT?!" when she believes Lincoln is cheating on Ronnie Anne.
- In Hop to It Alya's reaction when Jack mentions her boyfriend back in Los Angeles. For context, Marinette and Alya have just spent the last several weeks treating Jack as a rival for Adrien's affections, which Jack was completely blind to.
- In Juxtapose, Class 1-A spends the Sports Festival wondering what Izuku's Quirk is. When they hear that it's the seemingly useless "Minor Banishment", they all scream "WHAT?!"
- In Always the Quiet Ones, Rarity lets out one when she learns that Rainbow wants the Rainbooms to clean her and Fluttershy's whole house for snooping around it.
- The Great Alicorn Hunt: Scootaloo has enlisted Sweetie Belle's help with Flute's mute issues. Sweetie Belle gives Flute an extremely unusual directive:Sweetie Belle: Now swallow it.
[Flute lets out a mote that could best be described as "?"] - Loved and Lost: Twilight's denigrated and imprisoned loved ones have this reaction to Prince Jewelius announcing to them that Celestia has been sentenced to death and will be executed later that same night.
- Shining Armor's side story in the Pony POV Series reveals that this was his and Cadence's reactions to hearing about Twilight being the Element of Magic. The guards reporting this had prepared earplugs specifically for this.
- The Witch of the Everfree: This is Sunset's response to Twilight saying she wants to visit her.
- Escape From The Hokage's Hat: Fresh from the Sasuke retrieval mission (a success in this case) Tsunade drops this bombshell on Naruto.Tsunade: The village council wants me to banish you.
Naruto: '''WHHHHAAAAAT?! - In the end of Chapter 3 of The Fourth Apprentice, Sarutobi summons several monkeys for a final exercise. Sakura believes that he wants her to catch them. - This is Naruto's reaction when being told by Shikamaru that he was declared KIA 11 days ago (with Naruto suffering from memory losses due to the explosion that seemingly killed him).
- Sakura does this when Naruto reveals that he's trying to propose to Hinata, after the latter and her girl friends thought he was going to break up with her.
- Sasuke, Sakura, Naruto, Hinata, Miho, and Yuko all exclaim "SAY WHAAAAAAAA?!" when Kei agrees to let Sai touch her breast.
- In a flashback from Chapter 131, this was Minato's reaction upon learning from Tsunade that Naruto was unaware of who were his parents until a couple of weeks ago.
- True Potential:
- This is Anko's reaction when Hiruzen asks her to become Team 3's jōnin-sensei. Given that this happens during nighttime, her reaction is so loud that it awakens several inhabitants of Konoha.
- Naruto, Anko, and Kiba all have this reaction when Shikamaru forfeits his match against Sasuke.
- Masakado has this reaction when he learns that Kabuto has Mito Uzumaki's corpse.
- Long Time No See: Misato burps a loud exclamation when a hammered Rei splutters she is already getting grey.Misato: "Come, Rei, let'sh – hey, ish shat Aoba over there? Ha, almosht not recogn'zed him wish so little hair! Ish he gettin' bald or what?"
Reri: "Heh, not hiss faul', is it? Everyone isss getting older. Your hair 'as lost quite sssome color too..."
Misato: "WHA'?" - You Are (Not) At Fault: Misato shouts a deafening "WHAT?!" when she finds out that Shinji was the one who initiated Third Impact.
- My Dream Is Yours: Otis has this reaction when Olympia tells Ohlm that she's been having weird dreams, as he too has been having weird dreams.
- In A Crew for a King, this is Igaram's reaction when he learns that Vivi has left Alabasta with the Straw Hats.
- In Sol Invictus, Nami and Usopp understandably react in surprise and disbelief when Luffy suddenly asks Sanji to be her chef. It is quickly followed by Zoro's deadpan delivery and Sanji's noticeably more calm, exact response in his mind.
- In This Bites! during the Omatsuri Island chapter this is Buggy's reaction to figuring out what island the Strawhats are on. This is noteworthy because Buggy does not like the Strawhats at all, and yet even he finds what's going to happen completely horrifying and wants to warn them.Buggy: WHAT?! WHAT DID HE JUST SAY?!

- In Cowboy Noir both Rattlesnake Jake and Dia do this when they're suddenly chosen for a singing contest when they meet up at the Gas Can Saloon. Hilarity ensues when they try and sing a duet that is totally off-key.
- Ranma Restart: Bid for Freedom: Kiema lets out one when Ran reveals that Ranma killed Saffron in the previous timeline.
- In The Unabridged Memoirs of Darth Plagueis the Wise, this is Plagueis' mental reaction when Dooku nominates himself for Supreme Chancellor.
- Wilhuff Tarkin, Hero of the Rebellion: Tarkin's niece Rivoche shouts "What the WHAT?!" when one of the Tusken Raiders she just shot at pulls out a lightsaber and deflects her shot in the sky.
- In The Brother's Grimm, Bernard lets out one when Emily tells him about the time she accidentally got drunk.
- O Mother, Where Art Thou?: The leading member of the Mainland Board lets out one when the dieselworks worker who helped Diesel 10 the previous night reveals what he did.
- In The Legend of Total Drama Island, Courtney reacts thusly when Chris awards a certain challenge to the Eagles after it appeared that he was going to disqualify them and should have disqualified them.
- In Culture Shock, Megatron lets out one when he learns that he's just made an Accidental Proposal to Starscream.
- Horrortale: Undyne lets out a loud shout of "WHAT?!" upon learning that the CORE isn't working.
- Where We Don't Belong: Sena has one big enough to be heard in all of Garfont when learning about Noah and Mio being able to communicate in their dreams.
- In Damona In The Details, Nate lets out one when Damona reveals that by accepting the medal she gave him, they are now engaged.
