How do we do with singular plural nouns (or whatever they're called), like "duo", "trio", "team" – do we treat them as singular or plural? "The team gets" or "the team get"?

MichaelKatsuro Since: Apr, 2011
#10202: Mar 7th 2021 at 1:04:21 PM

They're singular. Since it's one team, or one trio, we write like we do about everything else that there's one of.

Minorica:

  • Rhythm Doctor: In Stage 1-X "Battleworn Imsoniac", the game tries to screw up your perfect gaming by glitching both the interface and the music, starting in the middle of the gameplay.

MGCM: The large boss demons Mermaid and Black Mermaid are based on Glaucus Atlanticus, [COMMA], AKA the blue sea dragon [NO CAPITALIZATION], a species of small blue sea slug. [I cut out this last sentence, since it's not really a justification.]

@ American Dragon: Jake Long - Friends and Allies

  • Small Role, Big Impact: Kara and Sara have less than three minutes of screentime in Season 2, but their visions alert Jake to the Huntsman's Evil Plan with the Aztec Skulls and indirectly lead to Jake reuniting with Rose, both of which shape the rest of the show.
@ The Phil Silvers Show @ Sole Surviving Scientist
  • Air follows two technicians (Norman Reedus and Djimon Hounsou) After the End as they maintain a bunker filled with human popsicles so that the sleepers (scientists key to restoring civilization once the atmosphere is breathable again) won't die in their sleep.
  • Land of the Dead: Although he's more of a fighter than a scientist, Riley Denbro created a zombie-killing APC that provides a lot of security to his community. Riley has become disillusioned with the Fantastic Caste System around him and wants to strike out on his own, but his skills are too valuable and his group's leader won't let him go.
@ Escape to Victory
  • A Father to His Men: Colby insists that enlisted men be allowed to join his team (and receive the special privileges granted to the prisoners participating) and is reluctant to get involved in an escape attempt due to being afraid that his players might be killed.
@ Cold Case
  • "The Road" shows a home video of Brenda running a marathon, stopping to get a jug of water, and then suddenly holding up a sign asking him to marry her. He happily says yes, hugs her, and lifts her off her feet. This is cute by itself, but becomes even more moving when they embrace the same way after she's saved from John Smith.
  • The last scene of the series shows Lily meeting her baby niece for the first time and then taking her sister and niece out of their abusive home, with Chris resting her head on Lily's shoulder.
@ American Dragon: Jake Long
  • After reading Jake's blog post about how miserable he is, Rotwood apologizes for how hard he's been riding Jake to make him reveal his secret.
Rotwood: Of all people, I should know what it is like to be ridiculed for trying to bring together the human and magical worlds.
@ Descendants Awesome Music
  • The second movie plays the intense Battle Rapping number "It's Goin Down" when Uma threatens to make Ben Walk the Plank and Mal threatens her in reply.
@ Descendants
  • After being removed from Maleficent's scepter's influence, Audrey begs the others to tell her that everything she did was just a dream, and blames herself for having the right mentality for the scepter to corrupt in the first place.
@ The Great Escape
  • Ashley-Pitt's Heroic Sacrifice, taking out a Nazi who recognizes Bartlett after Ashely-Pitt himself had been avoiding notice.
  • The montage of so many prisoners trying to escape the camp within minutes of arriving (such as by hiding in trucks or trying to march out with the woodcutters) is a great Establishing Character Moment for the whole cast, even if none of them succeed in getting out right then.
  • The French Resistance gun down some German officers at a cafe after getting the nearby Sedgewick out of the line of fire, then drink a toast with the wine from the dead Germans' table.
@ Lilo & Stitch: The Series S1 E25 "Nosy"
  • Did Not Think This Through: Gantu becomes so fed up with Nosy's gossip that he pawns him off onto Dr. Hamsterviel, only to belatedly realize that the gossipy experiment will tell Hamsterviel the insulting nicknames Gantu made up for him (Ratface, Hamsterjerk, and Kiesterviel). Hamsterviel, in turn, is so infuriated by those names that he sends Nosy back to insult Gantu without realizing that Nosy now has all kinds of juicy gossip about him (starting with the fact that he sleeps with a pacifier).

Hi again, dear tropers. It's me again. Let's have another try.

For a potential Headscratchers page for Willow:

  • How is possible that Willow Ufgood was that heartless to tell his children to let Elora Danan float away in the river instead of retrieving her?!?! He has his own kids, but why doesn't he care for a lost little baby? Yes, Elora's mother was killed at the beginning, but Willow doesn't know this, so what if her parents are looking for her and love her dearly?
  • Why didn't Queen Bavmorda order General Kael and his knights to kill all her enemies once she transformed them into pigs? She could have killed gotten rid of her enemies just when they were vulnerable!
  • By the way, if Queen Bavmorda had the ability to affect her enemies by saying just a few words, why instead of saying "You're not warriors. You're pigs!", didn't she just say "You're not warriors. You're dead!"? Boom! The rebel army would have died and no one, minus Willow and Fin Raziel, who without an army had unlikely possibilities to win, could have saved Elora Danan from her.

For a potential Headscratchers page for Big Fat Liar:

  • If Big Fat Liar had not been greenlighted by Marcus Duncan, how was Marty Wolf able to show a trailer of the film in theaters if the movie didn't still have a budget nor had been approved? No one can make a preview of a film if it hasn't started filming yet, aside that the audience would feel cheated if said movie ended up not being released despite having a trailer...
  • Okay, maybe Jason and Kylee didn't think about this because they are teens, but why didn't Frank warn them about messing with Marty's car? They changed the breaks so they would turn on the horn! As much as Frank hated Marty, was he willing to aide two teens into damaging Marty's car even if it could possibly lead to Marty's death if he found himself in a situation where he would need to break but be unable to do so?
  • After Marty misses his meeting with Duncan, Monty assures Duncan that she doesn't know why Marty missed it? Why didn't Monty tell him that she sent Marty to an adress given by "Marcus' assistant"? Then Marcus could have suspected that something was wrong...
  • One of the reasons for which Marcus refuses at first to greenlight Big Fat Liar is because Whittiker and Fowl costed millions to the studio. But the movie has just been released...why not let's wait until it finishes its theatrical running to determine if it was a flop? Sometimes even films not well received critically end up becoming box office hits!

Two Headscratchers for Mrs. Doubtfire:

  • Didn't Daniel risk his job as Mrs. Doubtfire at first when he threw the remote control into the aquarium because Lydia didn't obey him? Lydia, Chris and Natalie could have told Miranda that the new nanny had ruined the remote and Miranda could have fired him for destroying something of her property!
  • After Miranda informed Mrs. Sellner that Daniel didn't have a sister, how was Daniel planning to do the next time Mrs. Sellner came to check his apartment? How was he going to explain about the woman who claimed to be his sister if Miranda told her that Daniel didn't have any?
  • Why does Stuart believe that Daniel is an idiot? It's perfectly show that Daniel may be an immature man, but he does love his children and cares for them.

Some Headscratchers for Treasure Planet:

  • Why do Captain Amelia and Mr. Arrow hate Jim and treat him poorly at the beginning? Even though Jim is the one who deciphered Treasure Planet's map anbd if it weren't for him they would not be going to this expedition, Mr. Arrow sends him to the kitchen so he can't see the takeoff and later Captain Amelia has Silver order Jim to clean the deck!
  • What happened with Mr. Snuff? He just vanished from the film as soon as Silver started his mutiny! Was he part of Silver's crew or was an honest sailor who followed Captain Amelia's orders?
  • If Captain Flint's self-destruct trap to ensure that no one could have his treasure could only be activated by passing through the security lasers found after crossing the portal, what if maybe Silver and his pirates considered the possibility of there being a trap, spotted the lasers and didn't pass through them? Then they could have stolen Flint's treasure and Flint would have lost in death.
  • Once Treasure Planet's self-destruct system was activated, why does Jim loses time repairing Flint's ship to escape from there? That ship is old and they still have a functional ship waiting for them out of the portal. He's lucky that the ship still worked after years of abandonment!
  • Why do Doppler and Amelia wasted time in capturing Silver's remaining pirates? Yeah, maybe they could have captured Meltdown, the fat alien who guarded them, because they were two against one and Doppler had a gun, but why bothering to capture four pirates who hold you hostage and leave them to their fate on Treasure Planet if they planned to kill you?

And some Headscratchers for Lilo & Stitch:

  • Shouldn't have Lilo and Stitch gotten into trouble for knocking Mertle Edmonds off of her tricycle and stealing it? Even if Mertle deserved it and Stitch did so to escape from Jumba, they still assaulted Mertle and she has two friends of hers as witnesses...
  • Why does Nani bring Lilo and Stitch to her job interviews if all what they did was to cause problems? It was Stitch the one who got her fired from her previous job! Okay, maybe she didn't think that they would cause trouble, but after her first failed interview, why didn't she just tell them to go away for a while as she struggled to find employment? She could have gotten that job as lifeguard!
  • If Cobra Bubbles was on the beach looking from afar the scene Stitch caused by nearly drowning Lilo when Jumba and Pleakley tried to arrest him, why didn't he see Jumba and Pleakley bouncing away? Understandably, Nani and David didn't spot them because their focus was to save Lilo, but Cobra was there the whole time, so why didn't he assume that those two guys who came out from the sea had something to do? Besides, why didn't he run into the sea to rescue Lilo if his goal was to keep her safe?
  • Why do the fire fighters hold Nani as she yells at Cobra Bubbles for trying to take Lilo away? It's not their job and they should keep their focus on turning off the fire.

~Avenger 09

The ongoing problem you have, which I feel I need to talk about a bit more, is that you've been suspended from editing for three entire year (plus change), and still make very basic English errors.

Like I said, you wrote "journey's" instead of "journeys", and that's the kind of error you made when you first started using this thread.

If, after three years, you haven't made any progress with something so basic, then I'm not sure what the point is in you posting here. I know that sounds harsh, but there's just no point in telling you what mistakes you've made if you just keep on making those same mistakes for years afterwards anyway. That's a waste of your time too, after all—in effect, you're going to lessons that don't teach you anything.

(To be clear: I'm no mod. I'm not saying you're forbidden from posting things here. It just seems pointless.)

My Hero Academia - Main Characters' Families

Nao Shimura

  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Well she unintentionally had a hand in her son's path of becoming a villain by being too meek and submissive to his father's strict rules, she was a way better parent to Tenko than Kotaro. Chapter 270 even shows that he still loves his mother despite of everything that happened.
  • Good Parents: Despite all her flaws, she was nothing but a good and caring mother towards her children, and only wanted the best for them. After Kotaro had actually hit their young son, it was implied that she was willing to leave her husband and take their kids with her to protect them from their father. Even after Tenko's dangerous Quirk finally manifisted and accidentally killing the family dog and Hana, her last act alive was to hug him before her entire body fell apart.

[up] Gonna take a look at these in a bit.

  • Well While she unintentionally had a hand in her son's path of towards becoming a villain by being too meek and submissive to his father's strict rules, she was a way better parent to Tenko than Kotaro. Chapter 270 even shows that he still loves his mother despite of everything that happened.
(You can say either "despite everything" or "in spite of everything", but not "despite of everything")

  • Despite all her flaws, she was nothing but a good and caring mother towards her children, and only wanted the best for them. After Kotaro had actually hit their young son, it was implied that she was willing to leave her husband and take their kids with her to protect them from their father. Even after Tenko's dangerous Quirk finally manifisted manifested and accidentally killing killed the family dog and Hana, her last act alive was to hug him before her entire body fell apart.

("Her last act alive" is an awkward-sounding phrase to me. You could also change it to "the last act of her life".)

So I'm gonna update this example from WandaVision and Kamen Rider Saber and I need you guys to check my spelling and grammar. From WandaVision character page about Wanda.

Before

After

  • Adaptational Modesty: She lacks the generally (but not always) Stripperiffic costume from the comics. Though she still loves cleaveaged clothes, enhanced by a corset once she joins the Avengers. Downplayed with her Scarlet Witch outfit, which is form fitting and shows a bit of her skin but a lot less cleveaged than her previous costumes.

From Kamen Rider Saber character page about Reika Shindai.

Before

After

Please check this please and thank you.

She has an all-black outfit on most of the time, but she works for the good guys. Though how much of that is genuine has yet to be seen. She later switches her outfit to a crimson red one [no comma] when she becomes a swordswoman. (The "didn't help" part seemed unrelated to things.)

(Oh, and your links are all perfectly fine. I'm just too lazy to include them.)

@ Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue

  • Feet-First Introduction: The first shot of Dana shows her feet as she goes to brief her father about the demos escaping from their tomb.
  • Ms. Fanservice: It's relatively subdued, but Dana wears a Dangerously Short Skirt and fairly tight blouse in most of her un-morphed scenes and has a bikini scene or two as well.
  • Identical Granddaughter: As young woman, Kesey's grandmother looked just like her.
  • Rugged Scar: Captain Mitchell has a prominent scar to the left of his nose, which helps emphasize his status as a veteran rescue worker who constantly braves danger.
  • Badass Driver: Vypra uses a heavily armed dune buggy against the Rangers in one episode and is pretty good at outdriving them for a while.
  • Classy Cat-Burglar: One episode has Vypra (wearing a ski mask and Spy Catsuit) stealing several crystals important to Bansheera's plot by cutting through an office building window, getting over a laser grid with some pulleys, and breaking into a safe.
  • Combat Stilettos: Vypra is never seen out of her high-heeled boots, and can fight fairly well in them.
@ American Dragon Jake Long S 01 E 10 Body Guard Duty
  • Brick Joke:
    • Sara has a vision that someone will take the last cup of pudding before a nerdy boy. Several scenes later, Jake is the one to take the cup of pudding he was reaching for.
    • Sara warns Jake not to eat some bad meatloaf in the cafeteria. Later, when Jake has to leave Rotwood's classroom in the middle of a test, Rotwood assumes it's because he ate the meatloaf and it made him sick. It turns out that everyone else ate the meatloaf and got sick in the middle of the test for real, causing the test to be rescheduled.
@ The Shaggy Dog
  • Mailman vs. Dog: Wilson Daniels is a postal carrier who is always being barked at by dogs and resents them in turn. His wife speculates that dogs dislike mail carriers because they notice how they repeatedly bring bad news to the house.
@ Three for the Chair
  • Could Say It, But...: Amsel won't outright confirm the identity of the man he was asked to illegally wiretap (and probably did wiretap despite claiming that he turned down the job), claiming his memory is no good on the subject. Still, he says that since a specific person being the man Amsel was asked to wiretap would fit so well with Wolfe's theory, he should take it for granted.
  • My Greatest Failure: Harland Ide feels deeply ashamed about how he was manipulated into spying on a prominent industrialist and is reluctant to discuss the matter.
@ Percy Jackson and the Olympians @ G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
  • The flashback showing Rex attacking his own sister in her sleep and injecting her with brain-washing nannies.
@ Contested Sequel

Hiya! Is this entry alright?

  • "Since then my loneliness does not pain me, because I know my redeemer lives and he will finally rise above the dust." The sentence parallels Book of Job (19:25) exclamation about God, "I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth.".

To win, you need to adapt, and to adapt, you need to be able to laugh away all the restraints. Everything holding you back.
