Not Tropeworthy: Blade On A Stick

Original post:

Note: This thread was proposed by MacronNotes (copied from Sandbox.Blade On A Stick Wick Check).

Blade On A Stick suffers from the "character uses x weapon" problem many weapon tropes have because includes anyone that uses a lance/polearm/spear as weapon regardless of the meaning.

Most wicks with context could be slotted to Weapon Specialization, Weapon-Based Characterization, Prongs of Poseidon, Devil's Pitchfork, and Naginatas Are Feminine + other tropes.

Looking at the description, I think something like Primitive Spear might be worth yarding but that's about it. Either way, spear/weapon related TL Ps can be drafted independent of this TRS thread.

Conclusion

I vote disambig between Weapon Specialization, Weapon-Based Characterization, Prongs of Poseidon, Devil's Pitchfork, and Naginatas Are Feminine and possibly other tropes.

I think we can safely disambiguate this between the tropes that were mentioned in the OP, and Yard anything salvageable like the suggested Primitive Spear trope.

@Theriocephalus I didn't find anything in the wick check although there are 4000 wicks so maybe we can find some through wick cleaning. I picked up some potential examples from Blade On A Stick's on page examples. Some of them might need expansion though.

  • Fallout:The games feature a small assortment of spears that can be useful in the early to middle parts of the game, before getting completely eclipsed by various quality melee weapons, guns, and grenades. Still, dropping a fleeing Mook by hurling a spear through his back is far more badass then just shooting him. Spears are largely seen as primitive tribal weapons used by uncivilized peoples as John Cassidy implies. His daughter Rose of Sharon, despite being the daughter of a tribal, does not know how to use one.
  • ElfQuest:
    • Unsurprisingly given the stone age setting of at least the classic series and the fact that they make good hunting weapons when you're not fighting anything else, spears see quite a bit of use.
    • One issue of Hidden Years deals with young chief Ember set on learning how to fight with a sword, like her father, until Redlance points out that that she has more talent when it comes to handling a spear and that, yes, a spear is a chief's weapon, too, citing among other examples Two-Spear. He goes on to train her, soon after drawing a comment from Pike that she was already better than himself.
  • Warhammer 40,000: The Tau's closest allies, the Kroot, use gunpowder rifles with curved blades on them, harkening back to the days before Kroot had access to guns and fought with bladed staves. (Not sure if this counts)

There's also this one but the only "primitive" context comes from Nubile Savage

There's also this wick from Tarzan. It's on the on page examples but the "Lord of the Jungle line" isn't on the on page version.

  • It's generally been lost in other media adaptations, but the Lord of the Jungle is an expert spear wielder and thrower. In each of the first two books, he uses one to save William Clayton's life.

Primitive Clubs also mentions that the oldest weapons were actually spears in real life but that they have very different connotations in fiction. Not sure if that's true.

Just an idea thrown out there, but what about a trope called Stoic Spearman? As the page, there is a certain personality type usually associated with spear users and its rare to see a character like The Big Guy or The Berserker use a spear?

I feel Stoic Spear Man might be worth a subtrope of Weapon-Based Characterization like Brutish Character, Brutish Weapon, like how Billy is the Smart Guy of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers and uses a spear.

Or in Ever Oasis, the spear using Drauk are known as the most intelligent and graceful of the four races, contrasting with the plain seedlings that use Swords and the brutish Serkah that use hammers.

[up]the wick check doesn't show that as a prevalent pattern so that idea would have to be developed from scratch at the Trope Launch Pad.

I'll say that personally, I'm not convinced that is an actual character archtype, but that's because the sole example of a spearman that comes to mind for me is Ikkaku Madarame from Bleach, who is a Hot-Blooded Blood Knight

How about Slender Spear User or something for how spear users who tends to be skinnier / taller / thinner to match the length of their weapon? Like Brutish Character, Brutish Weapon, but inverted

[up][up][up][up]As Amonimus said. That said Robert, if you'd like to start that draft, you can move examples that fit that concept over to that draft page (and encourage others dewicking to do the same) while helping to dewick the old one. That way if there are examples in line with that idea that the wick check didn't capture, they won't be lost.
