...the potential viewer has been scared off. This is Ending Aversion.
— From Ending Aversion's description
Ending Aversion is about potential viewers refusing to consume a work because they've heard about how the terrible the ending is. It gets misused for fans hating the ending. What the Ending Aversion Wick Check revealed:
  • Only 14% of the wicks contained correct usage.
  • 82% of the wicks contained misuse.
  • None of the checked indexes described Ending Aversion correctly.
  • All of the In-Universe examples were misuse.

    open/close all folders

    Correct 4/50
  • YMMV.Game Of Thrones: Potential viewers who were waiting for the show to conclude before watching are likely to hear about the controversies of the final season, so they can easily be turned off from watching if they've heard about the ending.
  • YMMV.Mass Effect 3: The endings caused a lot of people who were on the fence for picking up this game or even trying out the series in the first place to leave it be due to the lack of variety, abruptness, and numerous plotholes lambasted by many players. However, while the Extended Cut DLC made things better, there is still a 50/50 Broken Base.
  • YMMV.Food Wars: Due to the Seasonal Rot the manga suffered in the end, many would be readers are put off by the entire manga, knowing it ends with introducing Asahi, and the many underwhelming plots that follow him.
  • YMMV.Cage Of Eden: The manga was extremely popular during its run until its abrupt Left Hanging ending, and it was likened to Lost in both a literal sense and in unfavorable terms, at which point some were advised to not even bother starting and getting attached to the series.

Technically correct, but focuses more on the audience hating the ending instead of potential viewers being scared off 2/50
  • YMMV.South Park S 10 E 14 Stanleys Cup: A big reason why this episode is so hated is because of its notoriously bleak and mean-spirited ending, where Nelson dies after seeing the Pee Wee hockey team losing and being beaten up by the rival adult team. Even those who haven't watched the episode refuse to do so because they're already aware of how it ends.
  • YMMV.Yu Gi Oh Arc V: While Seasons 1 and 2 of ARC-V are generally liked (though Season 1 is considered better than Season 2), Season 3 was poorly received for feeling rushed, leaving many loose ends, wasting good plots and characters, and generally not being as well-paced or well-written as the first two seasons. The last dozen episodes or so in particular, covering the final battle with Zarc and after, are universally loathed and seen as an extremely unsatisfying way to end the series. In the fanfiction community it's a Fandom-Specific Plot to rewrite the show after Season 2, or at least redo the final episodes. Given that many overarcing plotlines in the show built up this climax, seeing it be executed so poorly can sour people on the entire series if they know the finale is bad.

Doesn't mention potential viewers being scared off and/or only talks about an ending that was hated by the audience 30/50
  • YMMV.The Rise Of Skywalker: A lot of people were disappointed by this film as a conclusion to the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy and especially as the Grand Finale to the "Skywalker Saga". Reasons include leaving many of these viewers' questions unanswered or answered unsatisfyingly, not meshing well with the previous films due to Ass Pulls and retcons, contributing further to the Happy Ending Override of the Original Trilogy, and being too similar to Return of the Jedi. As a result, these viewers don't see much point investing in the "Disney Trilogy" or anything post-Return of the Jedi (except for The Mandalorian maybe) or replace it with the Legends continuation such as the Thrawn Trilogy novels. This is also possibly reflected in the film's box office earnings; although still a financial success The Rise of Skywalker is by far the lowest grossing of the Sequel Trilogy.
  • YMMV.Total Drama:
    • Few, if any fans, approve of the last episode of All-Stars, as it left many loose plot threads hanging, and abandoned several beloved characters unredeemed in the show, OR in the fandom. The fact that Fresh TV has abandoned the main series in favor of Total DramaRama only further adds to fans' dislike of it.
    • The ending of Pahkitew Island gets this for the same reasons as All-Stars; several plot threads introduced in the season (such as Amy and Samey's dysfunctional relationship and Dave's ultimate fate) are left hanging without resolution, only exemplified due to it being the absolute last episode of the main series. The finale is also considered disappointing due to it not bringing back any of the previously eliminated contestants beyond Dave and Jasmine and the endings not varying to any significant degree beyond a few seconds at the very end.
  • YMMV.Game Of Thrones S 5 E 6 Unbowed Unbent Unbroken: The episode's infamous final scene, wherein Ramsay rapes Sansa, was widely condemned as an utterly tasteless moment that served no in-story purpose other than being yet another reminder that Ramsay isn't a very nice person. This scene, along with the various other faults listed under Idiot Plot, helped cement this episode's reputation as the worst Game of Thrones episode until that point (and correspondingly, the one with the lowest audience scores on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes), a Medal of Dishonor it would hold until the show's infamously poorly-received final season.
  • YMMV.Chrono Cross: The game pulls more plot threads out of its ass in the second disc than some role-playing games have for their entire length, and does not properly resolve most of them.
  • YMMV.American History X: For some, due to the Broken Aesop ending. Zero-context example, but based how the example is written and everything else on the page, it's probably just misuse as fans hating the ending.
  • YMMV.Inheritance Cycle: Some fans of this series hated how the fourth book ended, mostly due to it leaving too much hanging (Paolini plans to tie everything up in a forthcoming "Book Five") and perceived use of Deus ex Machina.
  • YMMV.Toy Story 4: Much of the debate of whether this movie is a worthy follow-up to the trilogy comes down to its hotly contested ending. Some find Woody leaving Bonnie and his friends behind to start a new life with Bo to be a fitting send-off to his character, but others feel the ending contradicts the ending of 3 too much.
  • Ending Tropes: Audiences did not like how the work ended.
  • WebVideo.Final Fantasy In A Nutshell: In-Universe. Luneth thinks so.
Luneth: So that's it!? We save the world, and we get A BRIGHT SKY!?
    Topapa: Yep! The end!
    Luneth: F*** YOU!
  • YMMV.Futurama M 4 Into The Wild Green Yonder: A mild instance, as by the time this was released it was already widely known that Comedy Central were picking the show up for some new seasons. However, it's considered to be by far the weakest of the three potential Grand Finales that the show had during its run, due to it being the DVD movie most guilty of feeling like four episodes stitched together, and none of the character arcs being resolved in any real way.
  • YMMV.The Sopranos: A particularly controversial example. The ending may depict Tony's death but it's left very ambiguous and up to the viewer's interpretation.
  • YMMV.Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Downplayed. The epilogue wasn't received well, what with Harry naming one of his children Albus Severus and how half-hearted it came off as compared to the rest of the book, but the final few chapters of the story itself were well-received.
  • YMMV.Kan Colle: According to opinion polls, episode 12 is generally considered the worst episode of the series due to the rushed conclusion and further decline in the animation quality. Thankfully, The Movie takes place after this.
  • YMMV.Battlestar Galactica 2003: The first two seasons are great, to the point that it won a Peabody Award during the break between seasons two and three. When season 3 got underway, they started running out of ideas, and it was downhill from there. It didn't help that a large portion of the acclaimed writing staff (but not Ron Moore) left the show before season 3 got underway, particularly all of the female writers (who were acknowledged to have been the guiding hand in the writing of the female characters up to that point). Though there is also a large contingent of fans that thinks the second half of season 4 was where things started getting bad. And that's not even getting into the controversy over the series' Esoterically Happy Gainax Ending.
  • YMMV.Death Note 2017: Fans of the series decried the ending of the film as completely antithetical to the original anime, where Light manages to contrive a way to officially escape suspicion as a Kira suspect and outsmart L, effectively meaning he's gotten away with all of his crimes. In addition, the final part of the ending that implies L will write Light's name into the Death Note as revenge goes completely against his character as a detective who wants to bring about justice through the rule of law (though it is implied he won't go through with it because of this). It's been accused by many of feeling like the movie was made by members of the original series' infamous Misaimed Fandom who actually saw Light as the perfect hero of his delusions.
  • YMMV.Star Trek Enterprise S 04 E 21 These Are The Voyages: Widely seen as a pretty terrible way to end the series, not least because it isn't really an ENT episode so much as a TNG episode with more holodeck scenes than usual. Averted, however, with the actual final moments of the episode where we see the 1701-D, 1701 and NX-01 with parts of the "Space, the final frontier..." monologue performed by their respective captains, which is actually seen as the only halfway decent part of the episode.
  • Audience Reactions: Audiences really did not like the ending.
  • YMMV.The Amazing Race:
    • The Race is notorious for having finales that are much weaker than the preceding legs, especially before Season 12 (see Disappointing Last Leg). The worst are probably Seasons 10 and 11, the former which involved three teams most of the audience didn't like or care about, and the later involving one of the most unpopular teams to ever win the race beating one of the most popular with a luck based task.
    • Season 29 had a particularly bad example; contrary to the usual Manipulative Editing, they didn't even try to make it look close. The winner could pretty much be determined less than halfway into the episode, and the team that finished in last place was hardly even shown through most of it. While an unpopular team winning is one thing, having the editing skewer heavily in favor of the eventual winner is another thing entirely.
  • YMMV.The Amazing World Of Gumball: Not a lot of fans liked how the series ended, due to the implication that everyone in Elmore are doomed to be consumed by the void. Adding to that are the numerous lead-ins to this particular event being left without any sort of proper answer. This wasn't really helped by three factors: some suggestions indicating that Executive Meddling was at playnote , persistent rumors regarding an eventual movie that'll serve as the actual conclusion that even Bocquelet himself seems unsure will ever happen, note  and the fact that all Gumball-related material following the finale completely ignores the events of said finale.
  • JustForFun.The Ugly Barnacle: Patrick told SpongeBob the story with the intention of cheering him up, due to SpongeBob's own ugliness. This probably explains why SpongeBob was not amused by the Twist Ending.
  • YMMV.Kimba The White Lion: The manga is mostly a lighthearted adventure. However, towards the end, several main characters start dying for little to no reason. Kimba himself becomes blind, has nightmares about never reuniting with his son who ran away from home, then promptly dies sacrificing himself to save one of his human friends. And after all of these horrible things happen at once, what is the final moral of the story? "Don't ever challenge nature." What's ironic is that Kimba's actions would help humanity move to a greener source of energy, which would be extremely beneficial to nature. But in the end, nature apparently decides to screw him and his family over for no reason.
  • YMMV.Sola: The ending sees Yorito and Matsuri sacrificing themselves to give Aono a normal life as a human, which some fans feel she didn't deserve.
  • YMMV.X Men Film Series: Dark Phoenix was met with overwhelmingly negative reviews by professional critics and a lukewarm reception by fans. Some found the last entry in the main franchise to be merely disappointing, while others push it into Fanon Discontinuity and credit either X-Men: Days of Future Past or Logan as the proper finale. The final released film of the series, The New Mutants, was met with similarly poor reactions.
  • YMMV.Drawn To Life: The original Sudden Downer Ending caused so much Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy, Collection had to Retcon it into something much Lighter and Softer.
  • YMMV.Leviathan 1989: Most fans really don't like the out of nowhere shark attack that finishes off Jones just as the helicopters are rescuing everyone else. It comes across as a Deus Angst Machina. Ernie Hudson himself didn't like it.
  • Film.It Chapter Two: In-Universe, it's a Running Gag that Bill's books are considered good, but the endings all suck.
  • YMMV.Shitsurakuen: The ending involving the boys being paired back up with their girls received pretty damn near universal dislike.
  • YMMV.Retail: While some people liked the lack of a true ending because of how true to life it is for most retail stores and employees, others were disappointed because they were hoping for a "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue to bring closure on the characters. Some of the comments on the final strip had people making up their own endings.
  • YMMV.Oreimo: The ending of the series only served to pretty much piss everybody off, no matter which girl they were rooting for. Mainly, it's due to the author making the Brother–Sister Incest route canon (and it doesn't help that the little sister is a major Base-Breaking Character [or in some cases, a Scrappy] already), along with Kyousuke turning down the other girls, most of whom were fan-favorites, in the most humiliating and heartbreaking ways. Then there's the matter of Manami's derailment, and then in the end Kyousuke and Kirino decide to end their relationship, making the entire series look like a giant "Shaggy Dog" Story... at least to those who don't read the epilogue or subsequent material. Also, the author tried to push Kanako as a love interest on par with Ayase and Kuroneko despite her being an extra for a good 3/4 of the novels.
  • YMMV.RDG Red Data Girl: many viewers were dissatisfied with almost sudden transformation Izumiko in the last series of the show, which only complicated the general involvement of the plot.

    Correct Bolded Potholes 1/50

    Misuse Bolded Potholes 7/50

    Ambiguous 2/50
  • Fridge. The Spoony Experiment: As for why Mass Effect was chosen as a reference, it's pretty obvious when you think about it. Both games were the grand finale to their respective series, but got hit with a heavy dose of Ending Aversion, and EA had their hands behind both games, whether it's true or not. Unclear if it's about fans hating the ending, potential gamers being scared off by the ending, or both.
  • TheScrappy.Anime And Manga: Infinite Zamasu is easily his most-hated form (especially the version in the anime). Lots of fans see said form as the cheapest Diabolus ex Machina in the whole franchise, and the main cause of the Future Trunks Saga's widespread Ending Aversion. Unclear if it's about fans hating the ending, potential viewers being scared off by the ending, or both.

    Other Misuse 4/50
  • YMMV.Waterworld: The most maligned parts of the movie come from The Mariner, Enola, and Helen at sea, while the Smokers assault on the Atoll had enough action and suspense that it would have made a good climax for a short film.
  • YMMV.Samurai Jack: There's been a massive debate over whether or not Jack should've actually returned to the past to kill Aku in the finale. While many considered it a Catharsis Factor, it soon set in that by killing Aku, everything about the future would be changed and erased from the timeline, including all the beloved Ensemble Darkhorses in the series. There's also the fact that it renders most of Jack's fifty year odyssey a "Shaggy Dog" Story since it means all the times he sacrificed a chance to return to the past in order to save someone in the future were completely pointless.
  • YMMV.The Binding Of Isaac: Ending 20, the final ending to the game in Afterbirth+, just reaffirms what was shown by the previous few endings. There's more clarity to it, yes, but it doesn't reveal anything new either, is still quite open-ended, and even closes the story at the same point Ending 17 did. Repentance fixes this with its final ending.
  • YMMV.Wrong Turn 3 Left For Dead: The final scene feels fairly unnecessary for the plot and wildly inconsistent with Brandon and Nate's previous characterizations and it is tempting to disregard it. Both had earlier chances to try and get the money, and Brandon had saved Nate's life earlier despite having had a chance to escape on his own. Additionally, since Left for Dead is chronologically the last film, without that scene it's possible to imagine that the Hillkillers killing spree really is over.

Sure, I like it.

What I don't like is Great Work Bad Ending. Some of the examples included works that had mixed reactions in general, so such a rename would exclude works that weren't well-received and had terrible endings. I suggest Fan Disliked Ending like Fan-Disliked Explanation to imply that this is about the fans' opinions on the ending.

[up][up]That wasn't a rename suggestion. I was suggesting giving the misuse somewhere to go by creating a new YMMV item to house misuse to cut down on Ending Aversion misuse, and "Great Work, Bad Ending" was my idea for that name; we could actually do both solutions. That being said, Fan Disliked Ending does sound like a better and broader name for that concept than mine.

Audience-Alienating Ending also sounds good. Another potential rename is Ending Sucks, Didn't Bother.

I think my reply was misunderstood.

I said yes to renaming Ending Aversion to Audience-Alienating Ending. I like that name. However, for the other trope proposed in the wick check to catch misuse, I didn't think "Great Work Bad Ending" was a good name for it, so I suggested Fan Disliked Ending, instead.

Sorry for the confusion.

Audience-Alienating Premise now requires proof audiences were turned off.

Should Audiences Alienating Ending also require proof? Otherwise I don't see a rename as fixing the fundamental issues that made it a complaining magnet. AAP has a clear way to measure audience turn-off, sales and viewership numbers, but can we apply that to AAE which is after such are tracked?

Anyways, safe to call in favor of Audience-Alienating Ending. Tainted by the Ending can be a redirect.

AAP means audiences entirely avoid the work thus causing it to fail. Audience Alienating Ending would still require enough to see the work for the ending to become widely known. That means enough can see it before the backlash sets in sales/viewership can be too high to be proof, after release it has unlimited time to recoup. So what would proof that audiences are widely avoiding a work over its ending look like?

Through reviews and articles. A work like this would be well-known for its ending to have such a poor reputation. So reviews, articles, and words of people who have already consumed the media that tell others the ending was bad or whatever and it's not worth watching, thus it goes viral that this specific media had a terrible ending, then many people avoid consuming it because of its infamous ending. Basically, the ending has to be quite infamous with links to sources talking about its ending drove people away or something.

[up]Thanks.

Some examples from Ending Aversion I question would fit under Audience Alienating Ending.

  • Game of Thrones has a particularly disappointing final season, even compared to the previous mixed three seasons. Low points include the anticlimactic battle with the Night King and his forces in Episode 3, a confrontation that had been built up since the start of the story, Rhaegal suddenly killed off to artificially inflate Cersei's threat, Jaime declaring he never cared about the innocents and going off to Cersei, Daenerys Jumping Off the Slippery Slope and torching King's Landing, thereby doing what the Mad King would have done if Jaime hadn't killed him, and Bran being king because he had the 'best story'. Said developments sapped many people's interest in the show, and some only continued to see how badly it might turn out. Beth Elderkin at i09 noted that "It's kind of amazing how one of the biggest shows of the 21st century is now just something that happened", with merchandising, cosplay, etc. virtually vanishing in a few weeks. Defiantly fan alienating, but that it got an uptick in streaming during the pandemic makes me question how widespread out of fandom it was. Otherwise the media coverage of the backlash and disappearance of the fandom from mainstream makes it a textbook case.

  • The Star Wars sequel trilogy was already contentious... and then The Rise of Skywalker begins by revealing that the entire reason the last two movies happened was that the original Big Bad, Emperor Palpatine, never died (negating Anakin Skywalker's sacrifice at the end of the original trilogy) and had been manipulating the First Order from behind the scenes, possibly for years. While Palpatine dies again in the end, this time for real, the Skywalker bloodline is also extinct—although new protagonist Rey (who was earlier revealed to be blood-related to Palpatine) takes the Skywalker family name to continue their legacy. Altogether, the movie finishes on a very rushed and ambiguous And the Adventure Continues note, and many fans feel that the sequel trilogy ruins the original trilogy's definitive, hard-fought Bittersweet Ending in favor of a vaguer and less satisfying resolution that fails to deliver any sort of decisive conclusion to the saga. Lucasfilm and Disney then decided to focus on the High Republic prequel brand and the Post-Imperial era before The Force Awakens, with no plans to show or explain what happens after The Rise of Skywalker, which didn't exactly help. I can't see how a work with 1 billion box office can be said to have driven audiences away (compare Solo which did underperform). Last I heard it's also doing well on streaming. Given the backlash TLJ stated, I question if TROS's backlash is comparable or separate. Entry seems redundant with Fanon Discontinuity as is.
