Like so many older tropes, the name of this one is misleading people. I could've probably used "Ambiguous Name" here, but since the name is causing misuse, well...eh.

In a collaborative Wick Check posted below, we looked at 50 wicks and of those 50, only ten of them were being used correctly. The trope is about a specific archetype of a character who can get away with saying harsh truths due to nobody taking them seriously- as demonstrated nicely by the picture. Again, only ten of fifty did this correctly. Assuming correct math here, that's a 20% correct usage rate, or 68/342 wicks. Yikes.

The rest were being used for literal jesters, or were just ZCEs, most of which we can assume also referred to "jesters exist".

    open/close all folders

    Misuse
  1. Magical Clown: Potholed under "jesters", so it's Jesters Exist
  2. Oddly Small Organization: "The members at this time include The Jester, a Pirate that takes over an aquarium, and a not-so Treacherous Mentor" No context on this example, but it seems likely the character is a literal jester or calls themselves one. Going to the The character page, the only reference to a jester is a character that...looks like a jester. So yeah, this is misuse.
  3. Anime.Wild Knights Gulkeeva: "Dancer dresses and acts like one, which helps to show off his Laughably Evil behavior." Jesters exist
  4. Characters.Dissidia Final Fantasy Warriors Of Chaos I To VI: Appearances aside, he has no qualms of mocking his fellow Warriors of Chaos compatriots in addition to the Warriors of Cosmos. He even lampshades the trope when fighting the Emperor in Dissidia 012:
Kefka: Look at who I get to mess with next! Seems like "jesters exist".
  5. Characters.Kirby Heroes And Supporting Characters: "When he puts on the Master Crown, he turns into a jester-like creature with all sorts of powers." Jesters exist
  6. Characters. One Piece Wano: "He is a taikomochi, a male geisha and the medieval Japanese equivalent of a jester." Jesters exist
  7. The Rejuvenation Play: "Tricks Flash Sentry into joining him in cross-dressing for no better reason than to mess with him." Seems to be a better fit for The Trickster
  8. Characters.Senran Kagura New Wave: Her shinobi turnover is based off this. Lacking in context, but the way it’s written makes me think this is “jesters exist”.
  9. Characters.Solar Wind: "Jaden is prone to being goofy or absurd." Misuse for silly behavior.
  10. Characters. The Devils Carnival: "Funny to the Magician, less for John." Meaningless ZCE, also a trope slash example with Monster Clown, so misuse as well.
  11. Expy.Literature: Shows up as a pothole in a New Jedi Order example, which describes the character as being demoted to a literal court jester. Jesters exist, misuse.
  12. Realm of the Elderlings: The Farseer court at Buckkeep is as standard as it gets, with — most of the time — a King, his Queen, the King-in-Waiting (or Queen-in-Waiting, but the books are dominated by the male members of the Farseer line), princes, a royal bastard — hello, Fitz — , The Spymaster doing double duty as the chancellor, the Fool, various nobles and their hanger-ons, the King's/Queen's Guards, the normal guards and a vast array of servants. Pothole; seems like it's being used in the context of "character is silly".
  13. Recap.Blakes Seven S 2 E 12 The Keeper: The Charl has a Fool but his tricks are old hat, so Gola decides that Vila would make a good replacement. Fortunately Vila knows enough sleight-of-hand tricks to keep him amused. Probably "jesters exist".
  14. Recap.Ivanhoe: "Gurth and his companion, the jester (pothole)Wamba..." Just seems to be used as literal jester
  15. Recap.Mystery Science Theater 3000 S 04 E 21 Monster A Go Go: "Crow (reluctantly) as Sir Giggles von Laughsalot, in a hat with bells on it and the signature wand topped with a tiny version of his own head. Which talks." Jesters exist.
  16. Roleplay.Scode: CA pretended to kill Laika and MS and then acted (pothole) like an insane, murderous Juggalo. The surrounding makes it seem the trope is just used for jester/clown
  17. SchmuckBait.Video Games: The Jester. If the Jester is lynched, they win and kill one person that voted guilty on them that night. Voting guilty on a suspected Jester is therefore Schmuck Bait. Yes, vote for the guy refusing to give a role and generally being obnoxious. It totally won't get you killed. Character page for Town of Salem says that the Jester is a "crazed lunatic", so this is just "jesters exist".
  18. Lure of the Temptress: Diermot escapes prison with Ratpouch, who had been trying to make a living telling jokes before he was locked up. He's dressed accordingly. Seems to be “jesters exist”.
  19. VideoGame.Napple Tale: "Piero, the clown in the circus tent." ZCE + misue for clown.
  20. Stronghold: One of these goes around entertaining/annoying your people in Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader. At one point in the military campaign between missions your jester sings a song about your victory over the Rat's troops to the tune of Greensleeves. In Stronghold 2, you have to build a minstrel's guild if you want one in your castle. Jesters exist.
  21. WalkingSpoiler.Literature: Wendel Maculatum, from The Oaken Throne, is introduced as a kindly, if dim-witted, jester (pothole) who becomes a traveling companion of the main characters. Just used for a literal jester
  22. WesternAnimation.Three Amigonauts: "Burt is one in a dream" ZCE, but also clearly referring to literal jesters

    Correct usage
  1. Anime.Shounen Hollywood: The mascot from the amusement park seems to be one of these, at least in recent years. He's known for his "acid tongue" and often makes quips and snipes at others that are perfectly acceptable because of his crude character. He even manages to get the boys to finish their photoshoot by mocking them and forcing them to admit the things that were eating at them. Seems ok
  2. Characters.Chernobyl: An angry, yet quite measured one. Naked truth delivered to power with a carefully crafted sting they'd look the fool for punishing him for? A masterpiece. I believe this is correct usage.
  3. LetsPlay.videogamedunkey: While the content of his videos is often silly and nonsensical, there are often times where the goofy jokes serve to illustrate a salient point about the subject.
    • "Anthem Legends: Exodus" serves to highlight the number of samey open-world games being made, often with identical systems, gameplay, and story.
    • "Youtube Gave All of My Subscribers to Will Smith" is a satire of Youtube's unhelpful and unintuitive policies, which often punish and inconvenience content creators for no reason and with little chance of appeal.
Youtube Comment: You can tell this is fake because he said Youtube notified him. Seems Correct
  4. Literature. The Knights Of The Cross: " Ciaruszek, Jagiełło's jester, is very good at making people laugh and turning their attention to things that need to be attended." Used correctly.
  5. The Reynard Cycle: Duke Nobel's fool, Pierrot. He's an odd man, and speaks entirely in the form of Aesops. Seems to be correct usage.
  6. Literature. The Sea Wolf: Larsen mockingly compares Van Weyden to one, and though the Ghost plainly isn't a royal court, it fits. Despite being a clear subordinate, Van Weyden is one of the only people who can speak to Larsen as an equal, within reason, in large part because his intellect and naivety make him both interesting and amusing for Larsen. Though this doesn't spare him from Larsen's violent temper.
  7. Russell Howard's Good News: Russell uses comedy to spread awareness of problems and injustices. I believe this is correct usage.
  8. Theatre.King Lear: "The Fool, of course. His jokes and clowning often has a pretty scratching criticism of Lear and his conduct attached to them." Used correctly.
  9. Theatre.Godspell: "Jesus is interpreted as one of these, teaching his message through humor and clowning. The others get in on the act, and he paints their faces to mark them as his followers." Used correctly.
  10. TheEeyore.Literature: " Dolorous Edd from A Song of Ice and Fire certainly presents himself this way, but he's either a Deadpan Snarker with this as a shtick and a massive lean towards Black Comedy" Low-context pothole, but seems like a valid use of the trope.

    N/A, ZCE, Murky, and Misc
  1. Canon Foreigner: Several characters in As You Like It (which was Shakespeare's adaptation of the Thomas Lodge novel Rosalynde), most importantly Touchstone and Jacques (of "All the world's a stage" fame). The rest of the Canon Foreigners in the story are all related to them in some way: Jacques, being a cynical philosopher, gets a scene where he plays off the idealistic, music-loving "Amiens", while Touchstone's subplot necessitates the inclusion of his love interest, "Audrey, a country wench", a country priest named "Oliver Mar-Text", and "William", Audrey's ex-boyfriend. Pothole; lacks context.
  2. Offing the Mouth: King Scrofula utterly loathes his Fool for his Brutal Honesty and (well-earned) abuse, but is bound by protocol not to retaliate... until he has an excuse to name the Fool disloyal and execute him on the spot.
"You have performed your duties all too well. You have vexed and belittled me and made me despise you... So you've given me what I always wanted, fool: cause to be rid of you." Pothole; can't tell the context in which this is used.
  3. Try to Fit That on a Business Card: You only ever hear them from Quaver (pothole), though. Pothole with no context.'
  4. BigBad.Live Action Films N To Z: Potholed character name with no extra context.
  5. Characters.Erfworld: "It's described that during the events of Inner Peace (Through Superior Firepower) he, in the court of Faq, said things only a jester could get away with saying." Might be correct but needs more context as to what he actually said.
  6. Characters. We Are All Pokemon Trainers Main 1: The Jester/The Imp: Has elements of both. ZCE + trope slashing
  7. ComicStrip.Hagar The Horrible: "With elements of a modern comedian." ZCE
  8. Lelouch of the Wings of Rebellion: Mao/Medjed's Persona is Momus, the god of satire and mockery from Classical Mythology, and looks like a demonic jester. Pothole; unsure if this is correct or not, considering that according to Wikipedia, Momus was apparently initially used how this trope was supposed to be used, but was later used for light-hearted comedy.
  9. Film.Dance Of The Dead: "Jimmy has this attitude at the start of the film." ZCE, but at least it seems to know this is about an attitude/personality and not literal jesters? I hope?
  10. 7 Zwerge: When questioned by the castle guard, Brummboss announces that he's there to bring freedom back to the land, defeat the false Queen, and free Snow White. The guard assumes he's applying for Court Jester and lets him in. Pothole; can't tell the usage here.
  11. Literature. The Belgariad: "Beldin's role and one of his disguises." ZCE, implied to mean "Jesters Exist".
  12. Series. The Colbert Report: "The most prominent modern example of this trade." ZCE
  13. VideoGame.Ballz: "The one who organized the tournament in the first place. He's also the last one you'll fight." Techinically a ZCE as it says a lot without actually describing the trope (and it's being for an actual jester anyway)
  14. VideoGame.Choice Of Games: "Prenzie, the protagonist's oldest friend and a possible love interest." Literally a meaningless and useless ZCE. I can't even get an implication of usage here.
  15. VideoGame.Conquests Of The Longbow: "Fulk, to King Richard" ZCE, probably Jesters Exist
  16. Webcomic.Deviantart Secret Wars: Obviously, the Jester. Textbook ZCE
  17. Website.Habitica: The Jester set. ZCE, that has already been commented out
  18. Potatoes and Dragons: Riri is the castle's jester. He is also in love with Princess Melodine. Just a ZCE.

Doesn't help that the description rambles a lot about both real life jesters and various jester-related tropes.

As for a name, what about Curt Jester, a pun on "court jester"?

[up]Should we even use the name "jester", though, since the trope is really not about jesters at all?

I believe the idea is that this is a tactic commonly used by real court jesters, or otherwise was an archetype people used when portraying them, so there is an association there...but maybe it shouldn't be the entire focal point of the trope, huh?

I was tired and thus less analytical when I made my previous post, so the description's rambling about actual jesters threw me off. I still think the name should be changed, since it's yet another problematic "The (noun)"-based Non-Indicative Name.

Edit: Forgot a word earlier; whoops.

[up][up][up][up]As I understand it, The Jester is a characterization trope based on the jesters (such as Obfuscating Stupidity), and not actually about literal jester characters possessing certain traits (such as Non-Ironic Clown)

I think this is basically the trope Honest Advisor. There's not a lot of difference apart from the dress code, really.

Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight!

[up]I didn't know about Honest Advisor until now (or if I did, I forgot about it), but it does appear that The Jester is a duplicate (with The Jester being "Honest Advisor, but funnier"). I'm now in favor of merging the two.

Honest Advisor also has a much clearer description; the only flaw is that it appears to be interpreting The Jester's name literally.

[up]Well, since most of the examples of The Jester are misuse or ZCEs, and even the wick check's folder for good examples isn't always sure whether they're actually good (even the first one is labeled with "Seems ok" rather than saying it's definitely a proper example), I'd say yes, with whatever good examples there are being moved to Honest Advisor.

Edit: I think it's worth noting that one of the few "Used correctly" examples (without wording like "seems" or "possibly") contains a wick to Honest Advisor.

Yeah, Honest Advisor even says that it's "often the role of The Jester", which makes me wonder what the point of the latter is. The only thing I can think of is that The Jester is supposed to be Honest Advisor + Non-Ironic Clown with some historical context as a tenuous connection, but that's not enough of a distinction for me.

The Jester has the additional connotation of someone who uses humor and trolling to tell the truth, which is not mentioned in Honest Advisor. That seems distinctive enough to me.

Rename could include keeping the definition the same, right? I feel like the combo of Honest Advisor + Refuge in Audacity seems tropeworthy with the historical baggage of jesters, but I agree that the name seems to be causing problems.
