Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

Drifter Series: Revolution and Freedom by General RTS

  • Recommended by: TheRealLee
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Japanese-American and US army ranger Alexander Tsougi always considered himself to be a normal military grunt. That is until he teleports through a magic portal into the world of Zero no tsukaima.
  • Comments: The story gets really epic by chapter 3.
    • TotalAbsolutism: This story has quite a few problems. The Nobles are constantly holding the idiot ball and seem totally unable to adapt to fairly basic military tactics. They also seem to constantly forget that they have a little thing called 'Magic' that could be used to render a fair number of those basic tactics totally obsolete. They will frequently underestimate the enemy even when doing so has proven disastrous in the past. Finally, the Author seems to go out of their way to make the Feudal system that exists in Halkegenia look a lot worse than it really would be when that's quite unnecessary; there's plenty of real issues with such a thing without having to invent extras. If you can enjoy it in spite of this then more power to you, but these problems really drew me out of it.

Emperor of Zero by Nietzchian

  • Recommended by: Shinji117
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Napoléon Bonaparte, just after his defeat, is summoned as Louise's familiar. Things get...interesting.

Enslaved by Shadenight123

  • Recommended by: Twinkieman92, The Giant Rock, NeonFraction
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Hiraga Saito is a fleshed out character. Louise Françoise isn't happily whipping people. The summoning ritual does Exactly What It Says on the Tin, summoning creature to be branded and then enslaved by the influence of the mark. There is nothing happy about it. Familiar of Zero, with 'For The Laughs' removed. How bleak are things, really?
  • Comments:
    • NeonFraction: While 'fleshed out' may be an exaggerated description of the changes to Saito's character, he does take a definite level in badass. For anyone who couldn't get over how horribly abusive Louise was or how unfair the series was to Saito, seeing him make his way independently is a fantastic change. While I wouldn't say it's incredibly well written, it's a story intended to satisfy more than entertain. And satisfy it does. For all its flaws, you'll be cheering for Saito every step of the way.

Familiar of the Fairy by Juubi-K

  • Recommended by: Overlord Zaru
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Reconquista is defeated, but dark forces and darker ambitions threaten to plunge Halkeginia into war. Into this morass is plunged a wanderer from a distant land, summoned as a familiar by a certain young half-Elf.
  • Comments:
    • Overlord Zaru: Relatively young and new, but shows promise thus far. A new faction comes into play and will be interesting to follow through. And it seems that Tiffa will get some spotlight alongside our heroes Saito and Louise.

Noblesse Oblige by shadenight123

  • Recommended by: Vx 12
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Henry is an SI who gets reborn as the older brother of Louise. He aims to bring hugs, coffee, and aphorisms to Halkeginia while using his knowledge of a possible future to save it along the way.
  • Comments:
    • Vx 12: If you like SI stories (or can at least tolerate them) then this is a good one. Like most of shadenight's fics, the focus is on humor and fluff foremost, but it also deals with Henry trying to prevent the destruction of Halkeginia. The humor and fluff are excellent, Henry is a likeable kind-hearted hero, and the story avoids many of the stations of canon as it starts earlier than canon and Henry's actions actually have realistic consequences in terms of changing other character's behavior and preventing certain events from happening, as well as just introducing many butterflies in general. The story also has the advantage of actually being complete. The ending is a bit rushed, but it does give closure to the story, which is more than you can say for 90% of fanfics. Overall I highly recommend it as one of the best Familiar of Zero stories I've read, and certainly the best I've been able to read to the end.

Operation: Philadelphia by milkduds100

  • Recommended by: eduardogranja, Ronnie R15
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: The US Government sends a Navy SEAL into a newly discovered world to recover lost equipment and weapons, and to explore this new world. This is going to be one of the most interesting missions for Commander Riptide, Sniper for SEAL Team 10.
  • Commetns:
    • eduardogranja: Must say it feels good to see the reaction of Halkegenians to a true military force from Earth, and that was enough to get me hooked in the story. As of now, the story is on the higher end of the epic scale.

Soldier of Zero by Ashen Author

  • Recommended by: AshDevil, Ack Sed, Unclouded TJ
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Louise still summons Saito, but the world he comes from is different. He can't cast magic, but he knows enough about it to give Louise a little help, and he has some other skills too. Most importantly, it's primarily Saito as a Guile Hero instead of relying on brute force. Mind games are to be expected.

The Steep Path Ahead by Shadenight123 (link)

  • Recommended by: Leid
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: From the same author as Souls Art Online and Enslaved, The Steep Path Ahead is set in an AU of The Familiar of Zero where Louise is kidnapped by an elf as a child only for the ones who hired him to die before paying him, so he dropped her off in an orphanage. Several years later, Luise fails her exam to get into the Academy and summons Saito in order to prove that she isn't a failure.

Stupid Devil Dog by The Real Lee is here (link)

  • Recommended by: ANudist

  • Synopsis: Saito Hiraga refuses to let people walk all over him. He had plans, he was going to join ROTC, he was going to outrank his brother and sister, he was going to help people. He was smart enough for it, he was strong enough for it, he was determined to be at the top of his future class. But one summoning spell changes everything, and he loses control of his future.

Zero no Tsukaima: Saito the Onmyoji by SeerKing (link)

  • Recommended by: Justafan, Ronnie R15
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Freshly graduated from the Imperial Academy of Onmyoji, Hiiraga Saito decides to take the longer scenic route on his way to his posting. Then, all of a sudden, he is teleported to a strange country ruled by Western Wizards by a small pink haired mage. Saito has one question: What the heck is going on here?

A Null-Content by ThatDarnDrilltank

  • Recommended by: Aroxys
  • Status: Dead; last update February 2017
  • Synopsis: Most tales of Halkeginia start the same way, with Louise calling someone to her side from beyond the veil, and little outright changing beyond that. This time, it seems as though something's changed much further back than that event, causing staggering and unforeseen changes. Something made the trip from Earth to Halk under its own power, and it has its own ideas of what to do...

Dwarf of Bronze by Total Absolutism

  • Recommended by: MistahD
  • Status: Dead; last updated October 2018
  • Synopsis: Because of a change to the magic rules of the setting Familiar Summonings are performed in pairs to enhance the effect. Louise is paired up with Guiche de Gramont; and this causes both of them to summon unique familiars.
  • Notes: Links on SpaceBattles and Sufficient Velocity.
  • Comment: This one is a bit weird; it's a crossover with an original setting and mostly follows Guiche (as weird a choice as any there could be). But it's decently written, pretty unique, and isn't afraid to totally derail canon. Also commendable for one of the best uses of Mott that this troper has ever seen.

Maid of Honour by escalus01

  • Recommended by: fruitstripegum
  • Status: Dead; last update April 2017
  • Synopsis: A disastrous incident a week before the ceremony causes some changes in Louise's life that result in her summoning a different familiar, one ill-prepared for the responsibilities about to be thrust upon her.

Loopholes by DschingisKhan

  • Recommended by: fruitstripegum, Unclouded TJ
  • Status: Dormant (last update Sept. 15 2021)
  • Synopsis: Louise didn't summon a dragon or a loser from another world. No, she summoned a girl from across the yard. How humiliating! But why is Tabitha agreeing to be her familiar? And how many teenage girls does it take to destabilise a geopolitical region anyway?

    Shipping Fics
Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

Second Chance by EdenNimrais

  • Recommended by: Agarfinkel
  • Pairing: Saito/Henrietta
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: After Louise is forced by her father to terminate her contract with Saito, Saito ends up becoming engaged to Henrietta, who wishes to aid him in his goal of giving commoners the same rights as nobility.
  • Comments: This is basically a fanfiction story where Saito does not end up with Louise, but with another girl.

    Crossovers

Given the nature of the series' setup, a common crossover theme is to replace Saito with a character from another series.

A Certain Magical Index

A Certain Scientific Familiar by Ketchum Kid

  • Recommended by: ultimomant
  • Status: Dead; last update July 2016
  • Synopsis: Louise wanted a beautiful and wise familiar. What she got was a walking power plant with no patience for disrespect to anyone. In a world where nobles and magic rule and espers and science are non-existent, can the Zero of Tristain cope with having a familiar that is the Ace of Tokiwadai?
  • Comments: What really makes this an excellent crossover is that not only is Mikoto doing her best to change and improve this world she found herself in, the fic occasionally switches back to Academy City and shows Touma and Mikoto's friends doing their best to figure out what happened to her and bring her back.

HOPES and FEARS by One-WayRoad

  • Comments: Unfortunately is a Dead Fic that barely gets past Guiche's duel.

  • Recommended by: The 17th Immortal, Maymei, Elven Queen
  • Status: Dead (last updated March 2017)

  • Notes: Quasi-sequel to Fate/Revenant Sword, Normal End.

Saint of Zero by Satire Swift

  • Recommended by: AyaSai

  • Synopsis: The Gandalfr is the Shield of God, meant to protect their summoner from harm. Through faith and blade, here was a man that protected the weak from all that would do them harm, and his life ended with no regrets. Though Louise did not mean to summon a Guardian Knight, there were few greater she could have asked for.

For Those Without by SupportFriendMerlin

  • Recommended by ultimomant
  • Status: Dead (last updated December 2017)
  • Synopsis: Louise summons Karna from Fate/EXTRA as her familiar.
  • Comments: The author has confirmed that Karna will be a Showy Invincible Hero who effortlessly steamrolls his enemies in the most spectacular ways. What the author wants to focus on is Character Development as Karna slowly learns how to interact and connect with people. The subtle friendship he develops with Tabitha is adorable.

The Garden of Sinners

Echoes of the Void by AlfheimWanderer

  • Recommended by: Rivenscryr, Jiven, nitewind, expertus
  • Status: Dead; last update August 2017
  • Synopsis: In a society where magic is the proof of nobility, Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Vallière, has never managed to cast a single spell properly. Scorned by her classmates as "the Zero" for her utter incompetence, the Familiar Summoning Ritual is her last chance to prove herself worthy of a title. But imagine her surprise when she summons someone as inextricably linked to the void as she, a young girl with a need to prove herself nearly as large as hers.

Recollections of Pain by AlfheimWanderer

  • Recommended by: Jiven, Rivenscryr, nitewind
  • Status: Dead; last update August 2011
  • Synopsis: In a world where magic is the proof of nobility, Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Vallière is an outcast, bearing the stigma of failure, as she has never been able to use the simplest of spells. Scorned by society as "the Zero," a woeful all-but-commoner with pretensions to the high nobility, the Springtime Summoning Rite is her last chance to prove otherwise. To everyone's surprise, she summons something - but when millennia long traditions hold that the summoned being reflects the caster's ability as a mage, what does it mean that her familiar is blind?

Sword Art Online

The Floating Castle by Racke

  • Recommended by: TheSinful
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Her summon didn't appear, and nobody saw fit to question it. It'd been a cloudy day, and why should they've been looking upwards anyway?
  • Comments: Unlike almost every other story where Louise summons a different familiar and they become all kinds of awesome together, here Louise summons the entirety of Aincrad and never actually learns of the fact. Short but well written, the story explores the very real problems that come from the game suddenly being reality and a new military power appearing in Halkagenia.

  • Comments: Many have said that a part of what makes FoZ fanfics great is that Louise summons a character that does not put up with her attitude. This is one such story. Undyne is just fantastic: she's not afraid to speak her mind, especially when she sees someone being abused while also being amazed at the surface world and being a huge dork who accidentally breaks almost everything she touches and carries Sylphid around to show off her strength. This story is definitely worth a read.

Mysterious figments that only she can see above everyone's head and incomprehensible message popping up in front of her. Is she just going crazy or is this the mysterious will of the founder? And what the heck is "The Gamer"?
  • Comments: This is probably both the most original ZnT crossover and The Gamer crossover at the same time. Instead of an overpowered familiar to solve all her problems, Louise instead gains an ability that can master any skill and become insanely powerful extremely quickly, but because she's from a Medieval Fantasy World and doesn't even know what the game in gamer is referring to and thus lacks the knowledge that other crossover have used to make The Gamer overpowered at the start of the story.

Too long have the lands of Halkeginia gone without true Evil. There are fluffy bunnies and happy ponies all over the place, frolicking! It makes me quite sick! No, it doesn't matter if she wants to or not. Because Evil always finds a way.

Welcome to the Zone, Louise. A nice reversal of usual ZnT fanfic "Louise summons X instead Saito" story. Set in Call of Pripyat timeline.

Storms Overhead by Lione 'Tabuukilla' Fortuna (link)

  • Recommended by: MagusPandora
  • Status: Complete
  • Crossover with: inFAMOUS
  • Synopsis: He was known as the Wrath of Odin, Zeus' Rage... and monster, But yet, all he desired was to redeem himself in the eyes of the world that had seen him as nothing but a monster. Defending several Conduit children, he holds up against the militia in a final act of redemption. But just as death comes for him... a pink haired mage calls for a familiar.
  • Comments: TotalAbsolutism: This story starts off... poorly. It adheres to the common yet inaccurate fanon idea of the Familiar Runes being mind control devices of some sort which isn't even remotely accurate; their only displayed mental interference function is to suppress homesickness. Louise also reacts very poorly to her familiar even though he's not being a pervert like Saito. But for all that I felt it improved enough to be worth carrying on with and I enjoyed it in spite of a poor initial impression.

  • Status: Dead; last update July 2014
  • Crossover with: High School D×D
  • Synopsis: Saito Hiraga, the Gandalfr, has finally returned to his homeworld of Earth after a year of trials, suffering, and enslavement in the land of magic and monsters, Halkeginia. But even on Earth, he is not safe from the supernatural. And even on Earth, he may just find himself bound by the chains of servitude once more...
  • Comments: This is not your average "Louise-has-a-familiar-that's-not-Saito" fanfic crossover. It's one where Saito returns to Earth and with his Gandalfr abilities intact. However... Well, just read and find out what happens. It looks promising with its very detailed and long chapters.

Zero's Bullet by The Woodsman

  • Recommended by: TheSinful
  • Status: Dead; last update December 2014
  • Crossover with: Hellsing
  • Synopsis: The Huntress has escaped her Zamiel. Now she finds herself trapped on an unfamiliar world where nothing makes sense. What's more, she has become the contracted familiar to a no talent young mage known as the Zero. This is a story of blood, gore, madness and carnage. This is the story of Zero's Bullet.
  • Comments: Louise summons Rip Van Winkle as her familiar, who manages to stay evil while also being humanized. The story switches from light and amusing (Rip protesting she didn't steal a parasol but found it) to dark and horrific (Rip eating Siesta). Sadly, with the author dead there's no chance of it being completed.

Zero Interface by Golden Arms

  • Recommended by: TheSinful
  • Status: Dead; last update November 2011
  • Crossover with: Ranma ½
  • Synopsis: Ranma taunts his father on his first day of school at Furinkan, only to end up falling through a portal that leads him to Halkeginia. However, just because Ranma is made Louise's familiar doesn't mean he's taking it lying down.
  • Comments: Imagine a story that combines all the zany harem antics of Ranma ½ with the zany harem antics of The Familiar of Zero; that's Zero Interface. While the story has plenty of dramatic and awesome moments, the real draw is the comedy. Especially when Ranma's curse changes from turning into a female version of himself to turning into whichever woman he kissed last and Louise getting an empathetic link with Ranma. So if say, Ranma has lustful thoughts towards someone, so does Louise.

  • Comments: This fic has a lot of homages to Dragon Ball Z Abridged in terms of dialogue and Cell's personality. It is interesting how Cell comes to care for Louise and her friends. There are a few changes to canon like instead of the Staff of Destruction, it is the Golem of Destruction, which turns out to be Android 16.
