Gauntlet

A science committee founded by the International Security Council to develop high-tech defense technologies.

    Flame

Flame

Formerly a rescue operations android who's decommissioned to be a Squire for Gauntlet, piloting the Paladin unit Grit and is the protagonist of the game.
  • Action Girl: She's capable of combat with an laser whip even when not piloting Grit.
  • Experienced Protagonist: She is an accomplished rescue droid from before and the best human or otherwise partner Grit has ever had. Zig-zagged in that is obviously not what they are doing here.
  • Graphics-Induced Super-Deformed: In-Game Flame is not exactly the Ms. Fanservice she is in the art.
  • The Hero: With Grit, she's tasked with combating the demonic invaders of the Netherworld and defeating Ravenous and the Weapon Keepers.
  • Robot Girl: She's an android.
  • Sensual Spandex: She wears a latex pilot suit that shows off her physique, including her ample chest.
  • Super-Powered Robot Meter Maids: She was initially designed to perform rescue operations, so she has little issue piloting Grit for combat.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Her laser whip is less efficient than other attack options, but her agility makes up for it.

    Grit

Grit

The last remaining Paladin unit piloted by Flame.
  • Humongous Mecha: While often pretty small compared to the creature he fights, he's bigger than the average man.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Grit carries a shield that blocks enemy attacks from the front.
  • Multi-Melee Master: Is capable of wielding several types of demonic weaponry, regardless of the weapon type.
  • Mundane Utility: The good ending has him help rebuild the Earth as a construction worker, using his sheer strength and size.
  • Red Is Heroic: He has an all-red paint job and is firmly on the side of the good guys.

Demons

Denizens from the Netherworld who are the main antagonists of the game.
    In General

    Ravenous

Ravenous

Location: Spirit Forge

Spirit Weapon: Ravenous' Spear

The commander of 11 legions of demons and a great prince of the Netherworld.
  • Big Bad: Being in charge of the invasion, he spawns hordes of demons upon the Earth.
  • Bird People: Resembles a large, green avian humanoid.
  • Feathered Fiend: An avian demon from outer space who launched an invasion on Earth to test out the powers of the weapons he created.
  • Living Weapon: His spear, which you acquire after defeating him, has an eye that can blink and move around. It occasionally spazzes out as energy brims off it, daring you to wield it.
  • Punny Name: He's an avian demon named Ravenous.
  • Shout-Out:
    • One of his attacks is inspired by hard mode Blade Man Mega Man 10, in which he hangs onto a wall and fires a Spread Shot of five weapons.
    • Another of his attacks references Sigma's first form from Mega Man X, diagonally leaping from one wall to the other.
  • Tactical Suicide Boss: His second form's head is out of the reach of most weapons, but he tries to stab Flame/Grit with a giant spear that they can stand on and then pulls said spear up to head level.
  • Ultimate Blacksmith: He is the creator of the various weapons used by the Masters, and invaded Earth partly so he could test out their designs.
  • We Can Rule Together: As soon as Grit and Flame reach the final level, he offers them both to join forces with him to overthrow the dark princes of the universe. Naturally, they decline his offer and opt to fight him instead.

The Weapon Keepers

A group of mythical demons serving as the captains of Ravenous's 11 legions who each lead a legion.
    In General
  • Co-Dragons: Directly under Ravenous himself, each having command over a legion of lesser demons in a nation they operate, which assigned to attacking and destroying cities there in the process.

    The Horseman

The Horseman

Location: Any

A huge horse-like demon resembling a centaur, standing on four legs, wielding a halberd who appears if the player collects too many Spirit Weapons. Secretly a traitor to Ravenous.
  • Bait-and-Switch Boss: He replaces the fight against Wendigo in the Canada level by killing him.
  • Just Toying with Them: The reason he flees every time he's beaten is that he's secretly achieved his objective of making sure Flame hasn't been corrupted by the Evil Weapons yet.
  • Recurring Boss: Unlike the other Weapon Keepers, he appears multiple times through the game.
  • Light Is Good: The white Weapon Keeper is a good guy.
  • Our Centaurs Are Different: He appears to be a centaur with a horse head.
  • Shout-Out: His theme plays just before he attacks, a la Proto Man.
  • Token Good Teammate: He is perhaps the only righteous demon in the entire game, plotting against Ravenous and making sure Flame doesn't become corrupted by the spirit weapons.
  • Warm-Up Boss: He first appears as the boss of the Canada level, which is the tutorial for the game.

    Wendigo

Wendigo

Location: Canada

Spirit Weapon: Broad Axe

A Weapon Keeper that is attempting to freeze over Gauntlet's main base in Canada.
  • An Ice Person: His fight conists of him summoning icicles and snowstorms to fight.
  • The Unfought: Zig-Zagged. He's not fought in the main storyline as The Horseman kills him off before the fight even starts, but he is fought proper in Remix Mode.
  • Wendigo: Goes without saying. It resembles the classic description of a wendigo, having an emaciated body and deer's head.

    Lilith

Lilith

Location: USA

Spirit Weapon: Lilith's Poniard

A demon resembling a female who is located in the United States.
  • Doppelgänger Spin: Is very fond of splitting herself into four clones. Only the real one will throw knives at you, however.
  • Giant Woman: Grit is slightly larger than a bus. Lilith is twice his size.
  • Hot as Hell: Has the flirtatious attitude and limited clothing aspects down.

    Mictlantecuhtli

Mictlantecuhtli

Location: Mexico

Spirit Weapon: Mictlan Spear

  • Everybody Hates Hades: An Aztec death god is one of the villains in the game.
  • Flying Weapon: He levitates his weapon around the arena and uses it to attack Flame and Grit.
  • Summon Magic: Is capable of summoning a Hellhound to fight for him.

    Dudyanos

Dudyanos

Location: Scotland

Spirit Weapon: Wallace Sword

  • Odd Name Out: Out of all the 11 weapon keepers, his name isn't based on any draconic creature from legend or folklore, and he's based on most western depictions of dragons in general. The name instead derives from King Dudyanos, a Persian king who tortured Saint George, who is most known for the fable Saint George and the Dragon.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Has very similar traits to western dragons of folklore.
  • Playing with Fire: Goes without saying, being a western dragon an all. Three of his attacks are fire based, such as calling a fireball from the sky, doing a Shockwave Stomp that lets out a wall of flame, and his Desperation Attack involves a massive screen-height fire breath that must be blocked with Grit's shield.

    Boeoegg

Boeoegg

Location: Switzerland

Spirit Weapon: Ice Pop

  • Fighting Clown: Compared to the other 10 weapon keepers, his concept is one of the least serious — a giant snowman who rolls around, drops snowballs, and provides a huge ice lolly as a weapon on defeat. He's still as dangerous as the others.
  • An Ice Person: Being a snowman and all, he is capable of using the snow that comprises his body to attack, and being the symbolism of winter, he is also capable of summoning icicles.
  • Snowlems: He's based on the snowman that symbolizes winter in Swiss culture. Naturally, it's a giant snowman here.

    Medusa

Medusa

Location: Greece

Spirit Weapon: Gorgon

  • Flying Weapon: Like Mictlantecuhtli, she levitates her sword around to attack.
  • Medusa: Quite obviously. She's capable of using a stone gaze on Flame and Grit.

    Baba Yaga

Baba Yaga

Location: Russia

Spirit Weapon: Witch's Pestle

  • Doppelgänger Attack: After losing a third of her health, she splits into three copies which share the same health bar and attack simultaneously.
  • One-Winged Angel: After losing the second third of her health, she discards her flying cauldron and turns into a partially-birdlike monster.
  • Wicked Witch: She's based off the folkloric Baba Yaga after all.

    Anubis

Anubis

Location: Egypt

Spirit Weapon: Was-Scepter

    Popobawa

Popobawa

Location: Tanzania

Spirit Weapon: Popo's Spear

  • Bat Out of Hell: It's a batlike creature with a single eye.
  • Cyclops: A one-eyed batlike creature from Tanzanian folklore.
  • Eye Beams: Fires both eye blasts and lasers from its single eye.
  • Shout-Out: One of its attacks blatantly references Storm Eagle from Mega Man X, swooping down at Flame/Grit at a diagonal angle several times.

    Nian

Nian

Location: China

Spirit Weapon: Dragon Guandao

  • Making a Splash: Several of its attacks are water-based, referencing the Nian's undersea dwelling in Chinese folklore.

    Gashadokuro

Gashadokuro

Location: Japan

Spirit Weapon: Gasha no Hone

  • Dem Bones: It's a massive skeleton youkai from Japanese folklore.
  • Flunky Boss: At low health, it will summon ninja demon enemies to attack you.
  • Youkai: Based off the Gashadokuro, a huge skeletal youkai.

Inverted Tower Demons

    Putrid Paladin

Putrid Paladin/Blaze

Location: Sky Gate

Spirit Weapon: Sordid Sword

An armored knight similar to Grit. Is in fact a robot piloted by a female human named Blaze, who was a soldier Flame's physical template was designed from, and was corrupted by the Spirit Weapons she stole.
  • Fallen Hero: They were sent by Gauntlet to steal weapons from Ravenous' army, only to get corrupted by the sword they stole.
  • Mirror Boss: It's basically an evil version of Grit, capable of blocking attacks and even breaking weapons to cast spells.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: It's never really shown what happens to Blaze after Putrid Paladin is defeated, considering that she's ejected out alive after defeat. Judging by the cutscene, however, it's implied that she had been too far corrupted to be saved.

    Pazuzu

Pazuzu

Location: Ravenous City

Spirit Weapon: Stinger

  • Blow You Away: As a nod to being a demon king of wind, one of his attacks is to cause a constant gust of wind that attempts to blow Flame/Grit into his tail segments
  • Segmented Serpent: Everything below his lower body is wormlike, ending in a scorpion tail.
  • Trick Boss: You initially encounter it as a large Pazuzu statue that does absolutely nothing other than bounce around when hit. Hit it a few times, however, and the actual Pazuzu erupts out to start the fight for real.

    Furfur

Furfur

Location: Goblin Factory

Spirit Weapon: Storm Scepter

  • Instant Runes: The first phase of the battle consists of him casting spells using these.
  • Powered Armor: Dons a flying mechanical suit at the end of the fight, with a BFG that shoots goblins as ammunition.
  • Random Effect Spell: Whichever move he uses is dependent on which shape his rune roulette stops on. The Square rune has him simply chase you to hit you with his scepter, the Diamond rune summons enemies, the Circle rune causes him to use a Chasing Your Tail laser, the Star rune gives him a Doppelgänger Attack, and in a Shout-Out to the Ars Goetia, the Triangle rune causes him to become vulnerable for a period of time.
  • Shout-Out: The only boss demon in the game from the Ars Goetia. In a nod to the book, he becomes vulnerable if he attempts to use a triangle rune, as it is the way to bind him into speaking the truth in the original literature.

    Charon

Charon

Location: Canals

Spirit Weapon: Charon's Oar

  • Everybody Hates Hades: A death-related god is cast as a villain in this game.
  • Improbable Weapon User: His weapon of choice is a giant boat paddle.
  • Interesting Situation Duel: At low health, he destroys the platform the player character is on, and they're forced to fight him on his boat.
  • The Ferryman: Based off Charon from Greek Mythology. Although he apparently transports weapons in his boat, as shown by one of his attacks.

    Beelzebub

Beelzebub

Location: Catacombs

Spirit Weapon: Shovel

  • Bandit Mook: He's capable of temporarily sealing Grit inside his bag. Hit him enough to release Grit.
  • Flies Equals Evil: Appears to be a giant fly, and also summons fly swarms from below as a Desperation Attack.
  • Shovel Strike: His main weapon is a shovel, which he can either hit you with or use to dig up rocks.
