Human World

    Lacie
A shy girl with a curse, and the player character of this game.
  • Alice Allusion: Lacie's character bears some similarities to Alice.
  • Animorphism: During a dead end, Lacie gets turned into a fish by the other world to replace the one she killed.
  • Burn the Witch!: If she burns the blessings in the wrong order in Miss Knives' home, this happens to her.
  • Curse: Lacie is cursed in a way that makes everyone hate her.
  • Death Seeker: While she's not necessarily looking to die in the Otherworld, she doesn't particularly care if she does, because her life is so miserable that she finds death to be preferable.
  • Fainting Seer: In dead end 1-10, Lacie gets visions of a mysterious woman and dies afterwards.
  • Go Mad from the Isolation: Will happen to Lacie if you stray too far during her dreams.
  • Hikikomori: Lacie doesn't leave her own home for months, as her curse has made everyone hate her or not want to be around her, and everyone at school bullies her; her visit to the cafeteria at the beginning of the game was her first outing in a long while.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Lacie’s reason to go to the other world is to get rid of her condition and be able to interact properly with other people without the curse making every interaction go wrong or making the other person hate her for no explicable reason.
  • No Social Skills: Lacie has not interacted with anyone outside of Hiro and internet strangers for a long time, so while she can keep up a conversation, she struggles with bonding with people.
  • Properly Paranoid: Lacie is very cautious in the demon world, and also tends to pick up every interesting object she finds even if it doesn't have an immediate use. Given what kind of world she's in, this is probably wise.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Lacie can ditch Sai in the facility by escaping through a vent while he’s holding a door open for her. It does not end well for either of them.
  • Significant Anagram: Lacie is an anagram of Alice, a character that the developers have said Lacie takes inspiration from.
  • Surprisingly Sudden Death: Lacie can die from the most unexpected things in the other world, from stepping in a certain spot without the right item, to taking a fish out of its bowl, to even eating chips.
  • Taken for Granite: During a dead end, Lacie gets turned into a statue by Kett.
  • Used to Be More Social: Lacie used to be able to talk to people before getting her curse that makes everyone bully her for no reason.

    Hiro
  • Nice Guy: Hiro is a very supportive sibling.

    Sai
  • I Choose to Stay: Sai decides to stay in the other world after Lacie leaves through the door.
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently, the ominous aura that Lacie's curse gives her isn't the worst thing Sai has encountered.

Otherworld

    Demons in general
The inhabitants of the Otherworld.
  • Always Chaotic Evil: Subverted. It's mentioned that demons will kill you if they figure out you're a human, but some of them are actually pretty nice or helpful. Played straight with primals, which are so violent that even the other demons fear them.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Most of them have some shades of this.
  • The Fair Folk: The demons are often almost like fey.
  • Our Demons Are Different: They vary widely in appearance and personality. Some of them are pretty humanlike, others are more visibly demonic or animalistic, and some are full on monsters. They're weak to holy salt (not table salt), they tend to be rather eccentric or obsessed with certain things, most of them will kill you if they discover that you're a human, and individual demons tend to have specific ways of dealing with them. There also seem to be specific types of demons that are common enough to be named, such as primal demons and moths.
  • Living Shadow: Primal demons, or simply primals, are shadowy creatures that lurk in abandoned places and will kill anything on sight.
  • Long-Lived: Many demons don't seem to be mortal.
  • Man-Eating Plant: The plant that springs out of the fairy ring if you step on it. It’s inescapable unless you have your scissors with you.
  • The Mothman: There are some demons that are very mothlike in appearance.
  • Salt Solution: Supposedly can be warded off with holy salt.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Many individual demons have specific weaknesses or ways of dealing with them.

    Rune
A demon who lives in the forest and serves as an ally to Lacie.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Is very friendly and helpful to Lacie, but also doesn't see an issue with the spike traps that are capable of killing her, and mentions that they don't care about Lacie because they already ate.
  • The Collector: Likes runes, a lot. It's their namesake.
  • Long-Lived: Casually mentions that it's "a thousand years of bad luck" to talk about a specific demon.
  • Token Heroic Orc: Figures out Lacie's a human, yet doesn't care, and mentions that most other demons will kill you.

    Miss Knives
A mysterious and powerful demon who lives in the facility. She serves as the boss of Chapter 1, capturing Lacie and Sai when they venture into her house.
  • Blessed with Suck: She was a blind girl who abruptly regained her sight one day, which caused everyone else to believe that she was a witch and eventually burn her at the stake.
  • Burn the Witch!: This happened to her and her mother, due to her regaining her sight.
  • Master of Illusion: She can create illusions, and her entire area is basically one big illusion that becomes real. In her domain, reality is whatever you want it to be.
  • Psycho Knife Nut: As is apparent from her name, she's an Ax-Crazy witch who throws knives in the battle against her.
  • Skippable Boss: You are straight-up given the option to skip her fight if you die to her at least once. There is an achievement for playing through the full Miss Knives fight without skipping it.
  • Starter Villain: Though only showing up at the end of Chapter 1, she's the first major antagonist who Lacie has to deal with, as she captures Lacie and Sai for intruding in her home and tries to kill them while having a mini-arc to herself and her backstory.
  • Was Once a Man: It's implied from her backstory that she used to be a living human.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: She was once just a poor, blind village girl who received five "miracles" like gaining eyesight that resulted in her losing everything and her village nearly burning her at the stake as a witch. Then she somehow became a subject of experiments by demons. By the time Lacie and Sai get captured by her, she's so insane that she genuinely seems to have no control over her actions.
