Main Characters

    N
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2018_04_08_at_91449_pm_1.png
A zombie with only half a face and a skeletal hand. He saves Alex in order to keep her and eat her but forms a bond with her. He can be rather goofy and communicates with Alex through an Elsa doodle board, though after enough time around humans he begins to regain the ability to speak English, though it is garbled. He recently suffered a brief break with her after revealing that he initially wanted to eat her, but the two are beginning to repair their relationship.
  • Abusive Parents: Fron what little we know of his childhood, his mother apparently berated him for not getting straight A's. This included making him stand outside of the family apartment, test in hand, and also included yelling at him for getting the test crumpled.
  • Attractive Zombie: He is quite the Bishōnen.
  • Battle Couple: With Alex, in episode 172.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Appears to have this towards Zombie Baby, and to an extent Eins and Zwei.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: He gets stuck on the receiving end, courtesy the girls. They threaten to make him watch horrible movies if he doesn't tell them about his relationship with Elsa. N screams at the thought of watching said horrible movies.
  • Geek: He's a zombie who loves Minecraft, Disney Princesses, and doesn't understand girls.
  • Ghost Amnesia: After his undeath, N can only remember bits and pieces of his former life.
  • Hand Wave: N's skeletal hand shouldn't move (or even stay intact) due to lack of muscle tissue. How does it move?
    N: Magic!
  • Heel Realization: Begins to realize how he's falling for Alex when initially he wanted to eat her. This guilts him to no end.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: Is quite skilled cooking and sewing. Not to mention his obsession with anything related to Elsa.
  • Manchild: Very immature and childish. He even communicates with a Frozen doodle board, of all things.
  • Our Zombies Are Different: N is a zombie who is somehow sentient and can understand human speech. He also still has a heartbeat, though it is much slower than a normal human's.
  • Suddenly Bilingual: Slips into Dutch in #148.
  • Real Men Cook: He used to be a chef when he was alive.
  • Tsundere: A male example. He doesn't want to admit that he's developed feelings for Alex.
    Alex
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2018_04_08_at_92322_pm.png
A spoiled human girl trying to survive the apocalypse... by systematically killing every zombie she sees. She cares about her looks, and most zombies are terrified of her, thinking she is a monster.
  • Action Survivor: Duh. And before you say her shooting skills with stolen pistols are just contrived author shenanigans, look at what Alex did with her father as a hobby before the zombie outbreak happened. They were doing target practice at an American shooting range.
  • Badass Adorable: A pretty and cute girl who is extremely adept at killing zombies. And smacking grown men with selfie-sticks. She terrifies almost everyone she meets, living or dead.
  • Batter Up!: She's no slouch with a baseball bat.
  • Battle Couple : With N, in episode 172.
  • Crush Blush, which is also a Luminescent Blush.
  • Cute and Psycho : Had this moment in episode 172:
Alex: Great! I was thinking how long would it take to cut through his skin with these dull scissors!
    • Alex almost kills Claire with an axe throw when N is kidnapped.
    • Do we even have to mention Alex's behavior when she fights the mutant zombie again? She goes to town on him and then nearly kills him in a bleach-filled kiddy pool.
  • Cute Bruiser: Pretty obvious when it comes to Alex.
  • The Dreaded: Played for Laughs. Her zombie-slaying exploits have been well-known by many zombies. As a result, most of them steer clear of her the moment she appears. Other zombies who try to stop/eat her don't last very long.
The scientist :She's like Jason, Freddy and Michael combined!
  • Establishing Character Moment: While Alex is first introduced successfully fending off numerous zombies on her own, her unnamed (and pretty pathetic) boyfriend tells her that things are over between them, right before being bitten and subsequently turning into a zombie. Alex's reaction? Violently bash his head in while calling him out.
Alex: (bashing her boyfriend's head in) YOU! ARE THE! MOST! USELESS!! BOYFRIEND! EVER!!"
  • Even the Girls Want Her: After her temporary breakup with N, she and Lily have so much Ship Tease. It gets to the point where Lily is blushing and stammering after Alex comes out of the shower naked.
    • Elsa is later shown to be attracted to Alex.
  • The Fashionista: Oh, definitely. She even goes shopping for designer clothes during a zombie apocalypse.
    • Other girls in the human camp call her out on this trend, saying it's unfair she gets to dress pretty while everyone else is stuck with dingy clothes (Claire gets used as the comparison, with everyone comparing her apocalyptic survival attire to Alex's cute apocalyptic dating outfit).
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: Averted. Her cooking skills leave much to be desired. N describes the whole thing as a disaster. N tries teaching her some cooking skills and his attempts sometimes backfire on him.
  • Girly Girl: Oh, so girly.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: One minute she's shopping and perfecting her makeup, the next she's butchering an entire mob of zombies with a golf club. Don't ask how she kicks ass in a cute dating outfit.
  • Hidden Depths: As it turns out, she learned how to use a firearm at the age of fourteen, and apparently has trained in Kendo.
  • Horrifying the Horror: Zombies see her as a monster, and quickly learn to run far away when she shows up. At one point, dozens of zombies lie down on the ground, playing dead in the hopes she won't notice them.
    • Taken up to eleven against the mutated teenager. The guy's used to being the biggest fish around, but after their last fight, he's reduced to a quivering, terrified mess. To him, Alex is a beyond lethal threat.
N: I like how they react as if they saw a bear.
  • One-Man Army: She can rip through hordes of zombies as if they're tissue paper.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While Alex is regularly short-tempered, bratty, and frankly quite terrifying, she shows her sweet side when you get to know her.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Do not fight hand-to-hand with Alex if you are a zombie. Her kill count has reached the hundreds by now. Humans fare little better, even if armed with guns.
  • Red Baron : Alexander the Great, courtesy of Eins.
  • Tsundere: With N. It's pretty obvious.
  • Tranquil Fury: When N is put in danger. Her response when he was kidnapped is to cheerily bring her army of zombie friends, and after he's separated from her by the mutated zombies she waterboards the person responsible for it.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Without any hesitation broke Zombie Baby's arm when she tried to eat her and probably would have attacked the Twins if N hadn't told her they were his friends.
  • Yandere: Despite getting annoyed with N's antics easily and considering the fact that she seems to only date him for internet fame, you would be surprised at how irked she gets when any girl gets overly close to him.

Zombies

    Eins and Zwei

Eins

The smarter (and grumpier) of the zombie twins. He is often irritated by the others and doesn’t believe in the hinted relationship of N and Alex.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Judging by this set of dialogue when N asks about what the twins remember about their previous lives, it can be hinted that they didn't have the happiest childhood.
N: Do you guys remember anything in your past life?
    Eins:...
Eins:... There's nothing worth remembering anyway.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Most of his dialogue is made up of this.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Quite heavy on the jerk part, but Eins does worry for his friend’s well being underneath, even if he's not the nicest to them.
  • Skewed Priorities: Eins and Zwei bit a zombie in order to become zombies. They then terrified humans and zombies alike out of the toy store where the outbreak was happening just because they wanted the entire store to themselves. N calls them out on this.
  • Troll: When N contemplates breaking up with Alex, Eins puts on a therapist act with Zwei as the assistant. They mockingly tell N to enjoy the date he got himself into.

Zwei

The goofy one of the zombie twins. He doesn’t talk, but it is clear what he wants. Whenever Eins says something about his friends in a negative tone, Zwei knows what he actually means.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Zwei can be regularly seen either holding Zombie Baby or trying to make her smile. The latter seems to enjoy.
  • Elective Mute: He doesn't talk at all, not even when texting on a smartphone. All of his text lines are emojis.
  • Red Oni,Blue Oni: The optimistic and friendly red, to his brother's cynical and scheming blue.
    Zombie Baby

Zombie baby

A small zombie girl. She has a close bond with her mom and goes berserk on smelling human blood.
  • Ambiguously Brown: Out of all the zombies, she and her mom are the only ones with notable dark skin color.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: She's so far the youngest character in the show, appearing to be the age of a toddler.
  • Best Friend: With Zwei, who she is mostly seen playing with.
  • The Cutie: Despite being undead, she acts like any other girl her age.
  • Horror Hunger: Played for laughs. As a baby, she can't control her hunger, so she attempts to eat humans when she first meets them. Max distracts her by tossing her in the air and catching her.
    Zombie Lady
A mature zombie lady. She lives with her young daughter and has a close bond with her.
  • Ambiguously Brown: Both she and her daughter have darker skin than the rest of the cast.
  • Mama Bear: Lady will put herself in harm's way to protect her daughter. Max is very surprised that she still has motherly instincts.
  • Ship Tease: With Max after they meet again. Claire didn't seem too happy about it.
  • Team Mom: She's very maternal towards everyone and likes to give advice when needed.
    Lily
A teenage zombie girl. She meets Alex at the mall. At first, she’s terrified of her, but they become friends.
  • Ambiguously Bi: She has shown notable interest in Alex, and even after N and Alex reconcile she still teases N by telling him that if he screws up with her again, she'll steal her from him. However, she has also had a bit of ship tease with K, and when she initially rejected him she said it wasn't about orientation, but about her lingering feelings for Alex.
  • Covert Pervert: The extremely lacy and racy underwear Alex picked up was explicitly Lily's choice, and Lady calls Lily's true intentions out playfully.
  • Friend to All Living Things: In her past life, Lily remembers having a few pets and loving them dearly. Even after becoming a zombie, she has no desire to hurt anyone at all.
  • Girly Girl: Similar to Alex; in fact, they initially bond together over picking out new clothes.
  • Green-Eyed Epiphany: Recognizes how deep her feelings for Alex run, and consequently how toxic it can be for her and N, when she sees Alex not-kiss him and properly repair their relationship.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: The comedic threat of her and Alex being romantic/erotic while Alex and N are fighting is used to motivate N to action and break his Heroic BSoD and act. Lily herself then assumes the role when Alex goes back to N, though not without guilt at her own feelings.
  • Meaningful Name: She was initially named by Alex because of the flowers on her skirt, but her gentle nature and interest in Alex fit her name quite well.
  • Nice Girl: When Alex freaks out over N being kidnapped by Claire, Lily immediately comforts her and assured her that they will go and rescue N.
  • Shipper on Deck: Despite having feelings for Alex, she ultimately decides to help get her and N back together.
  • Ship Tease: A little bit with K in one episode, and definitely Alex for much longer.
    K
A young man from the human camp that got converted into a zombie in a fight. He now resides with the main group.
  • Big Brother Instinct: To a little girl zombie, who was incidentally the one that infected him in the first place.
  • Character Development: He goes from disregarding the fact he's becoming a zombie to accepting it and joining the community. He even forgives the little girl who bit them and the two become friends.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Like many who find out, K is quite disgusted when N reveals that he originally helped Alex just to eat her.
  • Nice Guy: Accepts Lily's rejection of his request for a date instantly, apologizes for making her uncomfortable, and asks if they can be Just Friends instead, all while trying to support her emotionally.
  • Ship Tease: A little bit with Lily in one episode.
  • Only Sane Man: He's one of the few characters who aren't either overly crass or potentially insane.
    Lewis
A botanist who got zombified in the botanical garden. He wants to protect the garden from looting humans.
  • Deadly Gas: Lewis used a concoction of chemicals to neutralize the special forces operatives who were raiding the place. He claims that the raiders "magically fell asleep" but it is more likely that they were killed.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He may have been zombified, but that doesn't mean he will allow bad behavior in his workplace (especially in the library). He also called his human coworkers and had them yell at the government over the special forces raid.
  • For Science!: If Alex and N do, uh, naughty stuff in the bedroom some time in the future, Lewis will be there to record the event and check to see if Alex turns into a zombie in the process. The human doctor wants in on the experiment.
  • It Can Think: Lewis's coworkers at a different facility were shocked that he could still communicate with them after turning into a zombie. Lewis was quite offended that they would think of him as a monster.
  • Not So Above It All: He's very nerdy. Just look at the traps he set in the garden.
  • Vegetarian Vampire: He was a vegetarian in his human life, and refuses to eat humans in his new zombie life.
    Garfield
A young teenager who was part of the experiment that eventually led to the zombie outbreak. While initially hostile towards the group, he's since become a friend of the group.
  • Break the Cutie: Used to be the sweet big brother of the other sick patients in the experiment, only to be the only one to wake up from the fungal cure and ordered to be destroyed. Given extremely powerful abilities and only one chance to revive his former friends, he quickly turned into a brutal monster.
  • Came Back Strong: The fungus 'cure' implanted into him by the scientists relieved him of the pain he felt while alive, along with giving him the ability to control anything he infected like puppets.
  • Convenient Terminal Illness: The reason behind his initial turning. He and the other patients in the wing were infected with the zombie fungus allegedly as an attempt to cure them, but in reality in an attempt to make super soldiers of them.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: After Alex soundly defeats and then subjects him to Cold-Blooded Torture to try and find N, he's left terrified and skittish around her, only warming up to her after she feeds him mac and cheese.
  • Expy: Of Venom. It's even referenced In-Universe.
  • Undead Child: Teenager, technically, but he was turned into what he is by scientists.

Humans

    Elsa
A human girl. She resides in the human camp and is, according to N, the most communicative one of the group.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Her part in the creation of the plague, and her relationship with N are brought to the forefront in later chapters. Although it is unclear whether she is the cause of the zombie plague, and her relations with N, romantic or not, are ambiguous as well.
  • Hidden Depths: She's actually studying zombie biology, accompanied by the severed head of a zombified chef.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Her reaction to the fact that the government stole her research and wound up starting the zombie outbreak. It gets worse when the latest lab victim turns into a monster.
  • Not So Above It All: Get stuck with N's doodle board? Start Talking with Signs.
  • The Quiet One: She’s noted by many to be private and keeping to herself.
    "Stale" Boy
A young man who resides in the human camp that, according to his actions, jumps to conclusions too fast. He is also a doctor and seems to hold some level of leadership in the camp.
  • Badass Normal: Holds N at gunpoint, and later is repeatedly tasered in an effort to protect the twins. Ignoring combat prowess, he's the only doctor within the human camp, or at the very least is the leader among them.
  • Informed Ability: It's not until after N gets kidnapped and saved that his medical profession is shown to be quite real. For that matter, he also had to play therapist to N during the physical examination (to the point where he starts treating the lovesick zombie like a little kid).
  • The Medic: A doctor in the middle of an apocalypse, and as such he is highly respected.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Firing a machine pistol in a zombie-infested shopping area tends to bring hordes of zombies down on you.
  • Only Sane Man: After realizing that the zombies are by-and-large harmless, he becomes an ally of Alex and N's base. So far, he seems to be the only human outside the base that respects the zombies and treats them as people, in contrast with the trigger-happy guards of the camp. Don't worry, the rest of the camp eventually finds that the zombies in the neighborhood aren't interested in eating humans anymore...
  • Papa Wolf: When the twins are in danger, he doesn't hesitate to hold off the attacker, and is repeatedly tasered so that they have time to get away.
  • Tranquil Fury: One of the survivors consumes all the pain-killers that the doctor and K (a recently-turned-zombie) scavenged from a pharmacy. If the doc wasn't keeping himself in check, that opioid-addicted survivor would be quite dead now.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Very obviously thought all zombies are out to eat humans at the start of things. N has to prove him wrong by talking him down. And many chapters before that, an entire horde of zombies unsuccessfully tried asking Elsa and the doctor to hold N back because they wanted to kill Alex.
    Max
A "hard-boiled" Scotsman. He resides in the human camp, and, according to Alex, won’t hesitate to kill a zombie, harmful or not. N and Max's daughter, Claire, eventually rescue him from the quarantine room where he was being starved on suspicion of being infected. Max quickly warms up to N after realizing that he's not the typical biting zombie.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Takes a suppressed handgun whenever scavenging for food. He knows that loud noises attract zombies, so he tries to be as quiet as possible.
  • Hollywood Silencer: Averted. Suppressed handguns aren't totally quiet since Alex hears Max shooting some poor undeserving zombie in the head.
  • Nice Guy
  • Not So Above It All: After Max gets saved, he reveals he's not above making bad jokes or even singing "Let It Go."
  • Papa Wolf: Don't think about hurting Claire. You'll get pummeled.
    Claire
A teenage human girl. She resides in the human camp, and looks like her father, the gunman, in personality. She won’t hesitate to kill a zombie (assuming she has ammunition for her gun), but worries about her father (to the point that she actually kidnaps N just to show the other survivors that N didn't bite her father). After the mess at the survivor camp, she joins the main couple.
  • Deadpan Snarker:
    Alex: I-I’m not blushing!!! I’m just...mad!! I-I turn red when I’m angry!!
Claire: Oh? So do you turn blue when you’re sad?
  • Expy: She looks exactly like a female Ash Ketchum, which has been joked about in the comic.
  • Hidden Depths: She’s revealed to be a big video game nerd.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Claire starts off as a temporary antagonist who hates zombies, but she shows later to be a Nice Girl (somewhat) who truly loves her dad.
  • The Gadfly: Gets a lot of kicks out of teasing Alex for her crush on N, even going far as to say she can take over for Alex if she truly doesn’t like him. At that point, one can sometimes wonder what Claire’s true intentions are.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The tomboy to Alex and Lily’s girly girl.
  • Took a Level in Cheerfulness: Max took notice of Claire's improved mood after spending time with N, Alex and the others.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Claire doesn't recognize the twins' prank attacks on her and her father as anything but zombie attempts to infect them. She actually mistakes the prank slime for zombie spit.
