Characters / AMC Squad Elysion

Go To

Elysion, also known as the Ringworld, is the setting of Episode 4, Law of the Knights. A mysterious ring-shaped world where magic exists in higher quantities than anywhere else in the universe and appears to be stuck in a post-Medieval European stasis, Elysion is said to be the home of the Mandala, and thus, it is where the AMC Squad travels to in the hopes of finding it. However, on the way over to the world, their ship - Snowfall's spacecruiser Snowflake - gets entangled in the ring world's immense gravitational pull and crashes outside of an abandoned temple. With their ship in disrepair and their supplies scattered, the AMC Squad has no other choice but to accept the help of many of Elysion's residents if it means getting closer to the Mandala and a way back home...

Elysion itself serves as the opening hub of Episode 4, while the town of Easthaven serves as the central hub. Other areas, such as Anchora and the Wetlands of Rowgar, are visited during missions and serve as dungeons, but contain their fair share of interesting characters.

Easthaven

The town of Easthaven is the central hub of Episode 4, where the AMC's agents meet up with and accept jobs from the residents in exchange for whatever help they can provide to the Squad. It is currently the only town in Elysion not under Naaldir's control, and the townsfolk have banded together in the hopes of fighting off the Necromancer's forces.

     In General
  • Eccentric Townsfolk: Each resident you meet has their own quirks and mannerisms, and provide some backstory on their town and how their current situation happened. Even the incidental characters have some interesting stories to tell, should a player listen in on them.
  • La RĆ©sistance: The town's residents have banded together to fight against Naaldir and his forces, but they're not doing so well by the time of the AMC Squad's arrival. Completing the jobs assigned by specific residents allows the townsfolk to bolster their strength and ready themselves for the eventual assault on Naaldir's base of operations.

     Drabeus

Drabeus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amc_drabeus.png

The town elder of Easthaven who welcomes the AMC Squad to Elysion, then asks them to talk to the townsfolk for help.

  • Cool Old Guy: Just because he's the town elder doesn't mean he can throw down. Just look at him fight off the monsters invading Easthaven!
  • Wizard Beard: He has a very thick beard and is the town elder.

     Brother Pheraclas

Brother Pheraclas

A monk from the Southern Streomes Order who asks Micky to go to the Wetlands of Rowgar and "bring the moon back to the sky."

  • Nice Guy: He's friendly to Micky when the two meet, and politely asks him to bring back the moon to Elysion. When Micky returns to Easthaven after finishing the mission "Wetlands of Rowgar," Pheraclas appraises him for completing his request.

     Freija

Freija

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amc_freija.png

The owner of the local tavern in Easthaven. Freija commissions James to recover an artifact from Darrow Lake, which is said to be imbued with special power that can help him defeat Naaldir.

  • Amazon Brigade: The Lions of Rianon, an order of warriors whom she led into battle. Currently, they're disbanded after Naaldir's forces ambushed them prior to the events of Episode 4; James can help her bring them back together after recovering the Sword of Pelinal.
  • The Bartender: Comes with the territory of owning a tavern, of course. She didn't start out this way, but circumstances have forced her to her current position.
  • Hero of Another Story: She reveals that she used to lead the Lions of Rianon, and would've gotten an edge over Naaldir if it weren't for his forces ambushing her and her group before the Squad appeared.

     Yuki

Yuki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amc_yuki.png

A native of Tusai who traveled to Easthaven to help out in the fight against Naaldir. She commissions Kagura to travel to the Sanctuary of Ideyr and slay a beast who has been interfering with traders on their routes across Elysion.

  • Fantasy Counterpart Culture: From her appearance and her background, Tusai appears to be one of Japan.
  • Hero of Another Story: She appears to be a fighter in her own right, and she mentions having trained under several masters, but we never get to see her in action.

     Alea

Alea

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amc_alea.png

An elf huntress who resides in a shack near Easthaven. She commissions Rusty to investigate the Necropolis as she senses that something is corrupting the lands around it.

  • Classical Hunter: Her job is to hunt the local wildlife in the outskirts of Easthaven.
  • In the Hood: She wears a hood, most likely to keep bright lights out of her eyes and conceal her identity.
  • Long-Lived: She tells Rusty, in the midst of an argument, that she's over 2,000 years old; Rusty, in comparison, is only 200 years old.
  • Our Elves Are Different: She's stated to be an elf, and she's well over 2,000 years old, but not much else is known about her.

     Oveus

Oveus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amc_oveus.png

The town mage, and a particularly grouchy fellow, who resides in Easthaven's library. He commissions Sang to head to the Ebon Pinnacle and retrieve a key that will let him enter the Palace of Rowgar.

  • Grumpy Old Man: He doesn't have much patience with anyone, and is quick to tell Sang off just for asking for directions to the Ebon Pinnacle.
  • Jerkass: He's rude and impatient with people, and mocks Sang for asking for directions by repeating his demands to him in shorter sentences.
  • Wizard Beard: He's got a thick one, although not to Drabeus' length, but it's still a sight to behold.

     Rothach

Rothach

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amc_rothach.png

The town's blacksmith who offers to upgrade the agents' weapons in exchange for Magic Upgrade Orbs.

  • The Blacksmith: For Easthaven, of course. He forges weapon upgrades for some of the agents' weapons to allow for special magical attacks.
  • Equipment Upgrade: Provides magical weapon upgrades that grant special alternate attacks to some weapons. These upgrades cost Magic Upgrade Orbs, which can only be found in missions and are hard to come by, but once you acquire these upgrades, you can dispose of certain enemies with magical attacks.

     Cemendi Bheneir

Cemendi Bheneir

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amc_cemendi.png

A dark elf who resides in the same building as Oveus, Cemendi provides special items in exchange for Magic Upgrade Orbs.

  • Our Elves Are Different: She's a dark elf, and she has some glowing eyes... and that's about it.
  • Spell Book: She can sell the Arcane Spellbook to the Squad; when purchased, the item allows Sang to scroll through all of his available spells without having to equip any of them separately though the loadout screen.

The Forces of Evil

The world of Elysion is currently under the iron grasp of an evil Necromancer named Naaldir, who controls the various monsters and other evil forces inhabiting the ring world.

     Naaldir

Naaldir / The Necromancer

An evil Necromancer who tried to besiege the Netherlands in the past, but was stopped by the Oostrum brothers. He reappears in Egypt following the Squad's assignment in the Gaza Pyramids, hiding in an ancient tomb, where he tricks Merlijn into bringing his squadmates over to Elysion by claiming to know the location of the Mandala. Come Episode 4, however, and it turns out that he's a lot more than he seems...

  • Big Bad: He's the villain of Episode 4, as the tyrannical ruler of Elysion and the one who drags the AMC Squad over so he can exterminate them.
  • Black Magic: Specifically in necromancy, but Naaldir's shown to use other forms of dark magic in his boss fight.
  • Final Boss: Of Episode 4, in multiple phases: first his body, then his mind, and finally, his soul.
  • Necromancer: It's in his name, and he can resurrect his forces during key moments in the episode. He's also shown to resurrect some of his fallen forces via summoning Void Totems, which are strange floating totems resembling human hearts.
  • Orcus on His Throne: He personally doesn't engage the AMC Squad prior to the raid on his keep, instead preferring to send his forces in to eliminate them. When that doesn't work, he instead pops in with a loud noise and either summons a Lost or a Void Totem.

     Mongur

Mongur

One of Naaldir's higher-ups who resides in his Colosseum in the Lookout of Irusoph, Mongur is a large minotaur who wields a great axe.

  • Bullfight Boss: He tends to charge a lot at Merlijn. He'll have to duck behind the wooden pillars in order to stun the beast, then wail on him when the window of opportunity is open.
  • The Heavy: He's one of Naaldir's larger enforcers, and seems to have served as an executioner through trials by combat in his colosseum.
  • Spin Attack: One of his attacks is this, where he spins around like a tornado and slashes everything in his way. It's one of his most damaging attacks, owing to the speed of his spinning contributing to the Cycle of Hurting that Merlijn can be put through.
  • Sword Beam: Axe Beams, rather. He can launch these out toward Merlijn occasionally, and these can deal a ton of damage.

     Roesia

Roesia / Succubus

A succubus who resides in her den underneath the Necropolis, Roesia is responsible for the growing corruption in the lands surrounding the area, which is causing the dead to rise and attack unfortunate passers-by.

  • Evil Is Visceral: Her domain is a mishmash of flesh and blood, and the arena where you fight her is an island in the middle of a lake of gore and floating bodies.
  • Flunky Boss: She's aided by a horde of Zombies and several Beholders, all of which make the fight against her much more difficult as you'll be distracted from the succubus's attacks just fighting off the enemies.
  • Life Drain: She can do this if she gets too close to Rusty, where she'll grab him and drain his life force. The player will have to shoot her with a Void Bolt in order to prevent her from grappling him; if they don't, they will have to perform a well-timed dodge roll to evade her grapple.
  • Succubi and Incubi: She's a succubus, though we never see her actually seduce anyone, and she spends her time spreading a corruption from the Necropolis outward; as a matter of fact, her interaction with Rusty has her taunt the gunslinger instead of seducing him.

     Svedr

Svedr

A mysterious warrior who resides in her domicile within the Ebon Pinnacle. She possesses the key needed to enter the Palace of Rowgar, and thus is Sang's target in his assignment.

  • An Ice Person: She resides in a castle made of ice, and the first phase of her fight has her casting ice spells against Sang.
  • Black Knight: She serves Naaldir and is dressed in rather intimidating armor, and she serves as the boss of Sang's mission, "Sjoerds Woodlands."
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: She's blue in the first phase of her fight, where she casts ice spells against Sang, and red in the second phase of her fight, where she switches to fire spells.
  • Dash Attack: She will occasionally charge at Sang in the second phase of her fight.
  • Dual Boss: She'll get aided by a Troll in the second phase of her fight, after it is thawed out from its frozen prison.
  • MacGuffin Guardian: She guards the key to the Palace of Rowgar, which turns out to be her sword. Sang must defeat her in order to procure it.
  • Turns Red: Should she get defeated in the first phase of her fight, she heats up and switches to fire magic, and she gains a speed boost, a Dash Attack, and a Troll to assist her. She even switches from blue to red.

     Vegunth

Vegunth

An utterly massive dragon who guards the Sword of Pelinal in Knight's Fall. James must defeat the creature in order to grab the sword and return it to Freija in Easthaven.

     The Kraken

The Kraken

A massive aquatic beast residing in the oceans of Elysion. According to Yuki, it is disrupting trade routes across the ring world, and needs to be put down in order to ensure that supplies can get to the rebels intact. Kagura is tasked with defeating the beast in exchange for whatever support the Tusai warrior can provide.

     The Hydra

The Hydra

A large hydra who resides in the waters near the Wetlands of Rowgar. It attacks the ship that Micky boards on the way to the Wetlands, prompting the Australian engineer to engage it before it destroys the boat.

  • Multiple Head Case: Has multiple heads, each of which have their own HP count, and are stationary enough for Micky to aim the ship's cannons at and fire.
  • Our Hydras Are Different: It's emerald green and has the standard multiple heads thing, but we never see it regenerate its heads during the boss fight against it.
  • Stationary Boss: Each of the hydra's heads stay still long enough for Micky to aim and fire the cannons at them. The heads do tend to dip back in the drink after a while, though.

     SPOILER CHARACTER

Jedrik

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amc_jedrik.png

Maarten's sire, and the one who is controlling him on orders from Naaldir.

  • The Corrupter: He claims in his fight that he was the one who brainwashed Maarten into serving him, with none other than "the sword of corruption."
  • Faceā€“Heel Turn: He claims that he tried to fight Naaldir in the past, but realized that he was unable to fell the Necromancer, and instead decided to serve him in his goal to defeat the AMC Squad.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Wields a shield in his off hand, which he uses to a heavy extent. Merlijn must take care not to hit the shield, lest he get stunned.
  • Shock and Awe: Can call down lightning strikes on the arena, all of which are marked before they can hit the ground.
  • Transplant: From the Duke Nukem 3D mod "WGRealms: Demon Throne."

An offworlder of unknown species who greets the AMC Squad after they crash land outside of his home, an abandoned temple. He offers them to stay at his temple as well as directions to the town of Easthaven as well as sites of interest at Picbonear Reservoir and the Serpent Canyon, respectively.

  • Aliens of London: He's an alien yet he speaks in a thick Appalachian accent. Despite this, no-one on the AMC Squad questions him on his accent.
  • Flat Character: He doesn't get much characterization beyond greeting the AMC Squad outside of the abandoned temple and providing them directions to Easthaven and two sites of interest.
  • Nice Guy: He's pretty cordial and allows the AMC Squad to set up camp at his home, and even points them to a nearby town in case they need help.

Voiced by: Maarten van Oostrum

Merlijn's missing brother, who originally fought alongside him to protect their home country of the Netherlands from an evil Necromancer, and who Merlijn has been searching for since his admission into the AMC Squad. He turns out to be alive, but is acting strangely and tries to kill Merlijn when the two brothers meet outside of the Palace of Rowgar. It turns out that Maarten has been Brainwashed by Naaldir and used as bait to lure Merlijn and the AMC Squad to Elysion as part of his gambit to eliminate him and his allies. To this end, Naaldir has assigned him to work under Jedrik, with the old warrior serving as Maarten's "sire", and orders them to await the arrival of his brother and then fight them in a Duel to the Death.

     SPOILER CHARACTER

Axon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amc_axon.png
Voiced by: Dan "DeeperThought" Gaskill

A mysterious man who appears to James in a dream, where he tells him how he can defeat the Beyonders and offers him advice to keep pushing forward. The AMC Squad later meet him in his library outside of Elysion, but here he's less willing to help the Squad out...

  • Be as Unhelpful as Possible: He refuses to help out the AMC Squad after they fought off Naaldir's forces and Majestic 12's soldiers to reach his library. He only relents after James asks if they're truly ready to fight Naaldir without his help, and even then, he only offers vague advice on how to defeat him.
  • Hero Killer: He kills James after the AMC Squad manages to defeat Naaldir at the end of Episode 4.
  • Mysterious Benefactor: Initially appears to give James some advice on how to defeat the Beyonders and is the one who gives Cassandra her mission to rescue James from certain death. After that, however...
  • The Stoic: He speaks in a calm and focused manner. The only time he even raises his voice is when Merlijn calls him out for refusing to assist the AMC Squad on their mission after they went through Hell to find him, and even then, it's only a slight raise in voice.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's extremely difficult to talk about this character without revealing that he's the one who contacted James in his dreams in Episode 3, and then kills him at the end of Episode 4.
