Webcomic / Gurral VS Sleipnir

Go To

Gurral VS Sleipnir is a 2021 indie kaiju webcomic written by Rana, Richard Mullenhour, and Andres Perez; with initial artwork by schizobot—Frost Llamzon taking over illustration duties after schizobot's departure. Acting as a crossover between Rana's Sleipnir: Equine Invader from Jupiter, Richard Mullenhour's Gurral the Smasher, and Andres Perez's Primal Warrior Draco Azul, the webcomic also features cameos and guest appearances from a wide range of other indie kaiju.

The Stadium Monarchs, eager for a slice of the Arena Lords' monopoly of the giant monster gladiator circuit, have been abducting giant monsters from across the Multiverse—among them the Arena Lords' prized gladiator Gurral the Smasher, the eight-legged Jovian equine Sleipnir, and the Mayan giant robot Draco Azul—and forcing them to fight with mind control collars.

  • Big Bad: Glibbious, while not the leader of the Stadium Monarchs, is the one responsible for abducting the various giant monsters from across the multiverse and forcing them to fight. When called out by his superiors for angering the Arena Lords, he's ecstatic that they finally noticed him.
  • Bizarre Sexual Dimorphism: The breaking news story on Behemoth Action News is a report that the giant monsters Kurgen and Jilax—who the inhabitants of Taqurga were hoping would kill each other—instead turned out to be opposite sex members of the same species despite looking nothing alike, and proceeded to become a mated pair, their offspring quickly overrunning and annihilating the planet's civilization.
  • Camera Abuse: When the Arena Lord being interviewed by Behemoth Action News recognizes "Gorral the Slammer" as a poorly disguised Gurral the Smasher, they tersely deny any knowledge of the Stadium Monarchs and then terminate the interview by smashing the camera.
  • Continuity Nod: One of the clips on the Behemoth Action News segment reporting Gurral's disappearance shows him fighting the giant orangutan-like alien primate Bananas, from the first chapter of Gurral the Smasher.
  • Massive Multiplayer Crossover: The webcomic co-stars Sleipnir: Equine Invader from Jupiter, Gurral the Smasher, and Primal Warrior Draco Azul—among numerous other indie kaiju guest characters.
  • Multiple Head Case: Jib and Job, the news anchors of Behemoth Action News, are a single alien with two heads that possess different personalities.
  • Nightmare Sequence: The first chapter features Sleipnir having a dream of when they were captured by the Stadium Monarchs while napping on the Moon, before awakening in their cell in an agitated state.
  • Noble Bigot: Eric Martinez, Draco Azul's pilot, is disdainful towards Ramona's suggestion they help free Gurral and the other enslaved kaiju, scoffing that just because Gurral can talk doesn't mean he won't eat them the moment his restraints are free.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • After the slaver informs Glibbious that the interns have been drinking, several Stadium Monarchs are shown cringing as Glibbious glares down at them.
    • When Glibbious sees Sleipnir draw blood on Gurral after being informed the ratings for their fight are up even higher than the Arena Lords', he becomes worried that the two giant monsters could kill each other—thereby preventing the Stadium Monarchs from featuring them in future matchups—and calls off the battle.
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: As the Stadium Monarchs teleport Gurral to Earth, a horrified businessman looks up and says "Oh no. Not again."
  • Projected Man: Draco Azul's AI, Ekchuah, takes the form of a holographic projection of a Mayan warrior.
  • Shoddy Knockoff Product: The Stadium Monarch slaver gives Gurral what she claims is impregnium dust, superior to even the Arena Lords' impervium... but Gurral snaps that he can tell it's just powdered jennamite.
  • Slave Collar: The Stadium Monarchs have placed slave collars that double as mind control devices on their captured kaiju. Any attempted defiance is met with tortuous agony, to the sadistic delight of the Stadium Monarch in charge of overseeing them.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: The Stadium Monarch in charge of overseeing the captured kaiju takes great pleasure in torturing Gurral when he tries to attack her, smugly explaining how the slave collars bypass any natural defences their wearers have to cause them unbearable agony. Unlike the excitable and childish Glibbious, she never raises her voice.
  • Versus Character Splash: The "Choose Your Fighter!" page pays homage to fighting games, showing Gurral and Sleipnir facing off on opposite sides of a character select screen showing the other indie kaiju guest characters.
  • What Were You Thinking?: When the Arena Lords figure out that the Stadium Monarchs were the ones who abducted Gurral—poorly disguising him with a holographic palette swap and calling him Gorral the Slammer—they respond by terminating an interview with Jib and Job of Behemoth Action News with extreme prejudice. The leader of the Stadium Monarchs then calls up Glibbious, the one responsible, and berates him for putting the Stadium Monarchs on the Arena Lords' radar in the worst way possible.
