You raise some interesting points, Noa (can I call you Noa?). There do seem to be a few germs of valid tropes in these pages, and I'd definitely be interested in exploring them. However, I think we have to wait on the current crowner before we take further action. If I'm wrong, feel free to correct me.

Well, we can add them as other options, since we didn't think of them before.

Maybe call it "Split into possibly new title tropes."

Eh... it's sort of unnecessary to add split options on crowners since any potential splits can just be done by anyone in the TLP, regardless of how the TRS goes. If you're interested in the ideas, nobody's going to stop you from trying to expand on them.

Yarding is a free action, so it can be discussed/explored without needing to be a crowner option.

Vague options such as "Split" or "Redefine" without having a concrete idea of what to split or redefine the trope into isn't particularly useful for further action even if it gets consensus anyway.

I'm finally convinced that both of these should be cut in their current incarnations.

If someone wants to yard Idiomatic Title and/or Trope As Title (Would this include titles that refer to out-wiki alternate names for tropes?) we can salvage instances as we clean.

Speaking of which, I think it's safe to call in favor of cutting both pages.

Stock Subtitle has been dewicked and cut. I'm going to take a break before working on Stock Episode Titles.

Here's the wick check for reference's sake:

Stock Subtitle is a little non-standard. Let's see how it's actually used on the wiki.

    unsorted 8/51, 16%
  1. Film.City Slickers: Followed in 1994 by City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold, which was not as well-received as the original. BOLDED pothole in synopsis.
  2. Fanfic.Moon Daughter: On February 7, 2015 Hanna posted a sequel called "Moon Daughter 2: Rise of a Godess,' found here. Pothole in work synopsis
  3. Film.Mowgli: The movie was originally titled Jungle Book: Origins to distinguish it from the competing Disney film, but when the release date was pushed to October 2018 the title was shortened to just Jungle Book. In December 2017, the title was changed to just Mowgli. After purchasing the film, Netflix changed the title to Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle. Lot of natter here. Is it claiming that both 1 and 3 would be a stock subtitle?
  4. SoYouWantTo.Write A Western RPG: Naming is important for both expansions and sequels. Most RPG titles follow the convention of "[series title] [installment number, unless it's the first game]: [subtitle]". Subtitle is optional for core games; omitting it helps avert Colon Cancer when making expansions, since they are usually identified only by their subtitle. If you have trouble coming up with a story-relevant subtitle, you can always use the name of the geographic region the installment is set in (this also works well for entire series' titles) or just take a Stock Subtitle.
  5. Toys.Clive Barkers Tortured Souls: After the popularity of the first series, Barker and McFarlane released a second set of figures, titled Tortured Souls 2: The Fallen. However, the new figures went for a much more raw, visceral look (less BDSM, more surgical mutilation), and weren't written with any kind of backstory. Bolded Pothole in work Synopsis
  6. UsefulNotes.Biker Media: The creative void of these productions is perhaps exemplified by their extremely limited title pool: it's hard to find a movie from this period whose title doesn't include "angel", "wild", "wheels", "(motor)cycle" or "hell". BOLDED pothole.
  7. VideoGame.Pinball Deluxe: under Updated Release: Pinball Deluxe: Reloaded. BOLDED pothole
  8. WMG.Transformers Fall Of Cybertron: The third game in the series will be called Rise of Cybertron. Pothole in WMG entry

    Outright misuse 4/51, 8%
  1. Fanfic. The Rise Of Golus: 'Rise' of Golus. Misuse. This isn't a subtitle, it's a title.
  2. Literature.Demon Road: Subverted. Desolation Hill is the main setting of the book. Total misuse. It's not a subtitle in this case, just the title of the second book in a trilogy.
  3. WebVideo.Mister Plinkett Reviews: Under Department of Redundancy Department Star Trek: The....Star Trek." BOLDED pothole. I think misuse in this case, but it's sort of ZCE to begin with.
  4. VideoGame.WWE Video Games: From SmackDown 2 to SmackDown vs. Raw; the second through third games used catchphrases from The Rock (Know Your Role, Just Bring It, and Shut Your Mouth) while the fourth used a phrase associated with Brock Lesnar (Here Comes The Pain). It was joked at the time of the rebranding that they were running out of catchphrases to use, and they couldn't exactly call the game WWE SmackDown: You Can't See Me. WUT? That's not what this trope is supposed to be.

    ZCE 24/51, 48%
  1. Film.Ginger Snaps 2 Unleashed: Featured in both sequels.
  2. Film.Ginger Snaps Back The Beginning: Featured in both sequels. Commented out

Wiki Word only

  1. Film.Children Of The Corn Revelation
  2. Film. The Legend Of Zorro commented out
  3. Literature.Mass Effect Revelation

Wikiword + repeat subtitle

  1. Animation.Pleasant Goat And Big Big Wolf: The latter half of the season name Ultimate Battle: The Next Generation.
  2. Anime.Afro Samurai
  3. Anime.Pokemon Origins: Origins (English); The Origin (Japanese).
  4. ComicBook.Spider Woman
  5. Film.Dragonball Evolution
  6. Film.Omen IV The Awakening
  7. Film.Undisputed III Redemption
  8. Film.X Men Origins Wolverine
  9. FireEmblemAwakening.Tropes S To Z
  10. Animation.Pleasant Goat And Big Big Wolf: The latter half of the season name Ultimate Battle: The Next Generation.
  11. Series.Roots 1977
  12. Series.Star Trek The Next Generation: This was the Trope Maker for the subtitle "The Next Generation". Is TNG itself a trope?
  13. Toys.Bionicle: "Comic 13: Rise of the Rahkshi!", "BIONICLE 1: Rise of the Toa Nuva", BIONICLE Heroes Commented out
  14. VideoGame.Ghostbusters Spirits Unleashed
  15. VideoGame.Medal Of Honor
  16. VideoGame.Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations
  17. VideoGame.Pokemon Rumble
  18. VideoGame.Super Mario 3 D World
  19. Webcomic.International Comic Continuity

Entries that are trying to be actual examples, but feel more like ZCEs filled in with natter. 15/51, 30%
  1. Animation.Happy Heroes: Season 4 is called Happy Heroes and the Happy Adventure, using the "Adventure" subtitle.
  2. Film.Exorcist The Beginning: The Beginning is a typical subtitle for a prequel.
  3. Film.Halloween 5 The Revenge Of Michael Myers: Though oddly enough, while promotional material repeatedly invoked the Revenge subtitle, the theatrical release didn't actually include it.
  4. Film.Hellraiser Revelations: And it only took seven sequels to get there, good job!
  5. Film. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Beginning: As befitting for a prequel.
  6. Film.X Men Apocalypse: Apocalypse. Unique in that it doubles as a character name.
  7. Trivia.Detectives United: The first game is one of many pieces of media with the subtitle Origins.
  8. VideoGame.Bionicle: BIONICLE Heroes uses the classic "Heroes" subtitle.
  9. VideoGame.Haunted Hotel: One of many pieces of media with the subtitle The X.
  10. VideoGame.Metal Gear Rising Revengeance:
    • The original, Metal Gear Solid version of the game was subtitled Rising.
    • Revengeance is also a Portmanteau of the stock subtitles revenge and vengeance — with the bonus of being an actual word, albeit an archaic one that's no longer in common use.
  11. WebAnimation.Unguru Bulan: "Reloaded" is used on occasion.
  12. WebVideo.Reaction And Review: Emer snarks about the use of these during his review of Hellraiser: Revelations. He also did this with his fourth Christmas special, which was subtitled "The Revenge".First half is not an example, second half - As sorted.
  13. VideoGame.Castlevania 64: Used for the Japanese title, which translates to Demon Castle Dracula: Apocalypse.
  14. VideoGame.Jaws Unleashed: Revenge and Unleashed are hardly all that original.
  15. VideoGame.Roco Kingdom: The television cartoon, Roco Kingdom Adventure, uses the stock subtitle of "Adventure".

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.

Are tropeless Recap/ pages allowed? Young Blades S 01 E 13 Secrets only has Stock Episode Titles in its trope list (although the description is pretty long). After dewicking, it has no more tropes.

[up][up] Since there are no more wicks after removal, I added a wick to another trope in the summary to clear it out.

Huh. So that's how you clear a ghost wick. What caused it anyway?

Ghost wicks (that aren't the nonexistent ones caused by the page mover tool) are caused when you remove the only wick the page has. To fix it, you just have to either add a wick to the page or add and then remove a wick

A moderator solution is:

  • Move page to some other URL.
  • Recreate page with a link to the Home Page.
  • Cut the page.
  • Move page back from the other URL.

Trope Repair Shop: Stock Episode Titles
18th Aug '22 9:22:30 AM

Crown Description:

Concerns were raised that Stock Subtitle and Stock Episode Titles are redundant with each other, while others have questioned whether they're worth keeping at all. Should Stock Subtitle be merged into Stock Episode Titles, or should one or both of them be cut? Other proposals for the page(s) (such as converting into an index, converting into a Definition Only Page, or moving to Useful Notes) will be decided with a second crowner if it's decided to merge them; if cutting has consensus for both pages, that crowner will not be used..
