Trivia / Detectives United

  • Acting for Two/Economy Cast: As with most of Elephant's productions, several voice actors provide the vocals for multiple characters in the series.
    • Courtney Christine Rosemont voices Agent Shade; in Phantoms of the Past, she also voices the flower seller Anastasia Smith.
    • Also in Phantoms of the Past, Preston Ellis voices the bartender, the sheriff, and the doctor in the bonus chapter.
    • In Deadly Debt, Alex Robertson voices Henry the violin player and also two characters from the bonus chapter, Alan Growley and the unnamed criminal.
    • In Beyond Time, Robin Hanna voices the witness, the policeman, and the guard. Scott Tunnix voices the sheriff, the Glimbourg, and the henchman.
    • Chris McCann voices Agent Brown; he is also the voice actor for Nathaniel Prior in Darkest Shrine, Mortimer Brown in Phantoms of the Past, and one of the alley thugs in the bonus chapter of Deadly Debt.
    • Lori Caulfield voices both regular Anna and Dark Anna.
    • Similarly, Brad Ziffer voices both regular James and Dark James.
  • Blooper:
    • Origins has a somewhat obscure one that is only seen in the credits; the voice credits are, with the exception of James, completely wrong. They list characters who don't appear in the game at all, such as Kate Blake and Thomas Coldwell. These are actually the voice credits for Haunted Hotel: Personal Nightmare, and somehow ended up being placed in not only the wrong game, but the wrong series.
      • In what might be called a recursive blooper, the voice credits for Haunted Hotel: A Past Redeemed list Agent Brown and Mortimer Brown among the characters; however, neither brother appears in that game. It's particularly noticeable because the rest of the voice credits are correct, and the Browns appear in the middle of the list.
    • In Darkest Shrine, when the three detectives reunite at the British castle they need to infiltrate, Anna is shown holding Richard's skull. Normally, this is exactly what would be happening - but in this particular instance, Richard has been stolen and is inside the castle, so he's nowhere near Anna's hands.
    • Also in Darkest Shrine was a minor one which has since been patched out. When Agent Shade sends Anna to help James at St. Mary's Orphanage, she - for no comprehensible reason - called the location "Schneider's Hotel." Either this was left over from an early draft of the script, or the writers briefly mixed up James and Agent Brown's locations.
    • Occasionally, Richard's skull will appear on the inventory bar even when Brown or James is the active character. It's particularly egregious in Timeless Voyage, when the skull is on Brown's inventory bar even though Brown is trapped thirty years in the future.
    • In Phantoms, while in the town of Restville, Anna discovers that a vending machine only takes "Restville currency," as noted on a placard on the machine. Her written dialogue, however, identifies it as "Roseville currency." (Given the omnipresence of roses in the town, it may be that "Roseville" was the original name for the place and it was changed later.)
    • In Deadly Debt, the instructions for two puzzles in the latter third of the game are switched. One is a Shell Game, and the other is The Maze seen a few minutes later in the back alley. The Shell Game has the instructions for The Maze and vice versa.
    • Also in Deadly Debt, the watches in the Collection Sidequest each have notes attached which provide information about them. The notes are correctly placed in the group photo; however, clicking on them to read them will, in some instances, bring up the wrong note. For example, clicking on the note for Agent Brown's high-tech watch pulls up the note about the Egyptian sundial.
  • Company Cross References: There are a number of instances of characters in the Detectives United games sharing names with characters in the Grim Tales games, all made by Elephant Games.
    • In Origins, Theodore Alphardi's murdered son is named Jack. Jack Nash is the name of one of Anna's cousins, who appears in the GT installment The Time Traveler.
    • Agent Brown's first name is Dorian. In later GT installments, Anna is married to a man also named Dorian, who is the father of her daughter Alice.
      • This creates a funny moment in the installment Beyond Time, which is the first time Anna's husband gets mentioned in the DU series. While looking at a love note from James's wife, she thinks about how "Dorian used to write me letters like this, too." The line can be confusing to players who aren't familiar with the Grim Tales canon, as they might mistakenly think she's talking about Agent Brown.
    • James shares his first name with Anna's distant relation James McGray, who appears in a few installments of the Grim Tales series.
    • The Big Bad of the GT installment Guest From the Future is Daniel Blackthorne, which is also James's last name.
    • Phantoms of the Past introduces a character named Anastasia; as longtime Grim Tales players know, this was also the name of Anna's mother.
  • Genius Bonus: In Timeless Voyage, James acquires a small sack labeled "stavesacre," with absolutely no indication of what this is. If you're well versed in botany, you may know that this word is the more common name for Delphinium staphisagria, a highly toxic flower which can be used to clear up certain insect infestations. The majority of players, however, probably aren't going to know what to do with it without consulting a walkthrough or the strategy guide. Answer
  • Limited Special Collector's Ultimate Edition: The games are available in both a Vanilla Edition and one of these. The collector's editions include goodies like screensavers, a Concept Art Gallery, and Extended Gameplay in the form of Collection Sidequests and bonus chapters.
    • Taken to extremes with Anthology, as its bonus contents include all sorts of extra features not available anywhere else, including earlier editions of the games.
