To-do list:

  • Consensus was to rename Fatal Attraction to Criminally Attractive and expand its definition to include relationships other than ones between detectives and a criminal they're investigating, with the revised definition including relationships between government officials and law enforcement officers other than detectives, as well as relationships between criminals and their victims. Examples that fit the revised definition need to be moved to the new name, and examples that don't need to be removed.

    Original post
So Fatal Attraction is a trope that might be having an identity crisis. Its description focuses entirely on the idea that, in detective/spy fiction, the law-abiding detective will always fall for the criminal seductress, usually a woman that is playing the Damsel in Distress until her crime(s) are revealed. Yet the laconic and the on-page examples tell a different story. The on-page examples include any type of romance that is dangerous or doomed to fail. The laconic is, well, "Never stick it in crazy." which doesn't mean anything, nor does it clarify anything.

Note before diving into the wick check: because the trope only has 78 wicks, all were checked. This led to a considerable amount of "Not Applicable" wicks such as indexes. Because of this I calculated percentages both including and excluding that category.

A wick check determined that the trope suffers misuse mostly as "a dangerous or doomed (potential) relationship". There was also a significant (33%) usage that was either ZCE or a pothole. And 6 wicks were actually wicks that mistook the trope for the movie. To summarize the findings found here:

  • Correct Usage — 9/78 || 9/66
  • Other dangerous or doomed relationships — 26/78 || 26/66
  • Other Misuse — 4/78 || 4/66
  • Mistaken Movie Wick — 6/78 || 6/66
  • ZCE/Pothole — 22/78 || 22/66
  • Not Applicable — 12/78

Looking it over, the trope only has, at best, a 13% correct usage rate. I think a large reason for the misuse is the broader definitions the trope is given on its index or crosswicked pages, and the laconic is one of the worst I've seen. The "doomed" examples can likely go on Forbidden Love or a subtrope. I also think renaming the trope would help make it less likely to be potholed or mistaken for the movie.

I think the best course of action would be to expand the trope to fit some of the misuse. I say some because opening it carte blanche is going to put us in the same boat as what Foe Yay was. A key part of this trope, aside from detective/faux!damsel in distress is the woman's use of seduction/manipulation to get to the man. I say we keep that part as a requirement. As for the other part, I'm not sure how far we should expand in the careers direction. Should we just open it up to anyone on opposing sides? Keep it contained to government/government's opposition? Include criminals/their victims?

Possible Courses of Action:

  • Keep current definition and streamline crosswicked/index definitions to match
  • Expand definition to fit (some) misuse
  • Rename (not mutually exclusive with other options)

I voted yes to both options: keep the seduction or manipulation aspect and expand definition from police to any government or LEO officer and criminal.

Calling in favor of the following:

  • Expand the definition to include any government official or law enforcement official (rather than just detectives) being in a relationship with a criminal
  • Keep the seduction/manipulation aspect of the definition

We still need to decide on a name since renaming (along with including criminals being in relationships with their victims) had consensus on the previous crowner, so does anyone have any ideas? I'm not sure if my Opponents Attract name suggestion would work since we ditched the idea of allowing anyone on opposing sides (due to concerns that it would make this trope redundant with Dating Catwoman and possibly other relationship-related tropes).

Maybe Dating A Criminal would work. Not sure, though, especially because I just got out of bed.

I'm going to wait for more name suggestions to come in before hooking a rename crowner.

I moved the page and documented the rename on the Renamed Tropes page and thread.

Here are the wicks. Shouldn't take long.

While cleaning wicks, I found a different ambiguation page called Fatal Attractions. Should they just be merged?

We'll still need a laconic. Also, before I start moving stuff (took care of the movie mistake wicks), is this a character trope? If yes, whose sheet does it go on?

Also also, I wasn't sure what to do with Stock Episode Titles so I left that one alone.

Working on dewicking. Let me know if any of my edits are wrong. Admittedly it's hard to tell with some of these due to a lack of context.

Nice work. Closing. I'll archive the wick check.

Wick Check Archive

Fatal Attraction is a trope that might not be sure what it is. It's description focuses entirely on the idea that, in detective/spy fiction, the law-abiding detective will always fall for the criminal seductress, usually a woman that is playing the Damsel in Distress until her crime(s) are revealed. Yet the laconic and the on-page examples tell a different story. The on-page examples include any type of romance that is dangerous or doomed to fail. The laconic is, well, "Never stick it in crazy." which doesn't mean anything, nor does it clarify anything.

This wick check is to see if the wicks have a similar type of misuse as the on-page examples. All Related.Fatal Attraction wicks are being checked as there are only 78 of them. Potholes in examples have been bolded.

Percentages for total wicks are shown, however, I have also calculated percentages for wicks not including the "Not Applicable" section, since it was so large. Those percentages are as follows:

  • Correct: 9/66 or 13.6%
  • Misuse — General Dangerous or Doomed Relationship: 26/66 or 39.3%
  • Other Misuse: 4/66 or 6%
  • Mistaken Movie Wick: 6/66 or 9%
  • ZCE/Pothole: 22/66 or 33.3%

Wicks Checked: 78/78

    open/close all folders

    Correct Usage — Detective falls for Criminal Seductress/Tempter 9/ 78 11.5%
  • Characters.Batman Talia Al Ghul: She is smitten by the "world's greatest detective" who happens to be a fierce enemy of her father. And Batman reciprocates even if Talia's on the wrong side of the law.
  • Characters.Darker Than Black: [Chick Magnet] Boy howdy. Almost every woman he interacts with either falls in love with him or treats him as an honorary family member, be they an Emotionless Girl, a Magnificent Bastard, the Fair Cop trying to catch him, or someone whose first sight of him was the (apparent) murder of her father.
  • Film.Basic Instinct: Most of the drama comes from Nick's attraction to Femme Fatale Catherine.
  • Film.Sea Of Love: Frank's knowledge that Helen might be a murderer can't overcome his feelings for her. She didn't do it though.
  • Film.The Maltese Falcon: Spade is in love with Brigid in spite of the fact that she's been murdering and manipulating everyone around her.
  • Film.The Third Man: A rare male example: Holly arrives in Europe to discover that the man he's come to see is dead, and the police were investigating him. He spends the movie convinced that Harry must have been innocent, and was the victim of some underhanded police conspiracy. He learns later that not only is the man still alive, but he's an amoral Manipulative Bastard, responsible for everything the police believed him to be.
  • Film.The Three Musketeers: The (double) crux of the backstory - Athos married the former Lady de Winter, only to turn her over to the authorities when realizing she'd been condemned for murder — then realizing she probably HAD been innocent — but was, by the time he met her again, guilty of far worse things. And right after they sorted things out, she DIED. On purpose. To avoid being executed.
  • Literature.Mike Hammer: In "I, the Jury" Charlotte Bennett, the woman Hammer had fallen in love with and planned to marry, turned out to be the killer. This is probably the case that turned him from an ordinary Private Detective into the dispenser of brutal justice we all know and love.
  • ShipperOnDeck.Anime And Manga: Installments on Darker than Black (namely, the second season and interquel manga) have contained numerous instances of characters teasing Misaki Kirihara that the real reason she wants to catch BK-201 is that she has a crush on him. To be fair, they're probably right.

    Other Dangerous or Doomed Relationships 26/ 78 or 33.3%

Dangerous: 21 || Doomed: 5

  • Characters.The Amazing World Of Gumball Students Of Elmore Junior High: [Alan Keane] Alan and Carmen are passionately in love with one another, but because Alan is a balloon and Carmen is a cactus, their relationship is impossible.
  • Characters.Big Brother 15 Winner Runner Up: [GinaMarie Zimmerman] [Yandere] OH SO MUCH for Nick. Her obsession with Nick was even compared to Fatal Attraction by the Zingbot. After he was evicted, GinaMarie sobbed for 72 hours and also carried his signature blue cap all around the house. The fans thought that she was a crazy stalker and that as soon as the game was over, Nick should get a restraining order! Discussed trope, general dangerous potential relationship
  • Characters.Big Brother 16 The Jury: [Caleb Reynolds] [Yandere] In regards to Amber, Caleb was Not Good with Rejection and he veered into Crazy Jealous Guy and If I Can't Have You… territory! He got very jealous of Amber flirting with the other male houseguests, notably Cody and because of this, Caleb wanted Cody out of the house in order to get him out of the way. The CBS live show editing of the Caleb/Amber relationship made it come across as though Caleb's attraction to Amber was on Fatal Attraction levels. Cut for length, general dangerous potential relationship
  • Characters.The Chronicles Of Amber: [Benedict] Sleeps with the hellmaid Lintra, who happens to be commanding an army invading his realm, and who later cuts off his arm. Prince and enemy commander
  • Characters.Dynasty Warriors Other Characters: [Dong Zhuo] His lust for Diaochan, who was only using him, is what ultimately brings him down in every scenario but his own in 5. Prime Minister and dancing maiden
  • Characters.Here There Be Monsters: [George] One of George's worries is that Diana is only pretending to have retained her humanity and is only staying with him to use him, this does not prevent him from protecting her and letting her stay in his home without any form of restraints. Hunter and vampire
  • Characters.Only Murders In The Building: [Jan Bellows] The reveal in the season finale that she is Tim's killer retroactively turns her and Charles's relationship into this. Basoonist and actor
  • Characters.Outlaw Star: [Jim Hawking] With Hanmyo of the Anten Seven. He never learned that cute girl he met was trying to kill him, she never learned he was her target, and neither ever learned that she died at his hands. Assassin and victim
  • Characters.Resident Evil 2: [Ada Wong] Every time she encounters Leon, he is trying to destroy the same thing she's there to steal for her employers. Understandably, their relationship is… complicated. Government agent and spy
  • Characters.World Of Mayrin: [Runa Raudspar] Met a very nice girl at the king's coronation party, and they hit it off right away! She even kissed her. Too bad she turned out to be the very person the party was running from. Vampire and ???, general dangerous anyways. Also, Darth work has a character page?
  • DarkerThanBlack.Season One Tropes A To M: Kirihara to Hei. Given that she first connected "Li" to BK-201 in episode 18 and had, in fact, been hanging out with him not eight hours before she revealed that she'd figured it out, it's likely that she'd subconsciously known for a while and just didn't want to admit it. Government agent and criminal
  • DarthWiki.World Of Mayrin: [Runa Raudspar] Met a very nice girl at the king's coronation party, and they hit it off right away! She even kissed her. Too bad she turned out to be the very person the party was running from. Vampire and ???, general dangerous anyways
  • Dating Catwoman: "more dangerous variant [of Dating Catwoman]" Sister-trope, but leads tropers to believe FA is broader than it actually is
  • DieForOurShip.Live Action TV: [Grey's Anatomy] Upon the break-up of Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd, the character of Rose appeared to meddle. Fans' reactions were particularly vicious; Rose soon became known as 'The Plant' on the fan boards, and several fan fictions set out to murder her or turn her into a stalker. Rose's canon reaction to Derek breaking up with her seemed to cater to these fans; she transformed into a petty bitch who stabs Derek with a scalpel, albeit accidentally. They even hung a lampshade on this by saying that she was known as the Fatal Attraction girl in the hospital, which was justification for her being Put on a Bus. Doctor and ???
  • Film.Pukar: Essentially an Indian cinematic version of 24 with particularly good Bollywood Masala and the smallest helping of Fatal Attraction added into the mix. Army Major and terrorist
  • Film.Scoop: Sondra Pransky falls in love with Peter Lyman, who she suspects to be the Tarot Card Killer. Journalist and Serial Killer
  • Film.Wild Things: Subverted and gender-inverted between Ray's female partner and Sam Lombardo. Detective and non-tempter suspect
  • HoYay.Death Note: (Episode 9) After L removes the only security camera filming them at the time, he implores Light to confess to being Kira, saying that he thought he'd never care who the culprit was, that catching Kira would be a thrill... until he met Light, and became interested in someone for the first time. Cut for length, Detective and non-tempter suspect
  • Literature.Aces Abroad: One of the reporters on the tour, Sara, correctly suspects that Senator Hartmann was involved in the death of her sister, but still falls in love with him and begins an affair with him anyway after listening to his sob story. He then uses his powers on her, forcing her to be attracted to him. Reporter and Senator
  • Literature.The Shadow Campaigns: d'Ivoire winds up falling victim to this in The Thousand Names. The woman he falls for turns out to be a spy and assassin, and bound to a demon to boot. Soldier and Spy
  • The Three Musketeers: The backstory has Athos realizing his wife was a criminal and trying to kill her. In the present, D'Artagnan sleeps with Athos' ex-wife unaware of her true identity. She's a murderer and the villainness, so in the end, the musketeers murder her. Yeah, it was a different time. Misindented. Soldier and Criminal(s)
  • Love Tropes: "The Hero falls in love with somebody who turns out to be the enemy". Index wick, but leads tropers to believe FA is broader than it actually is
  • Podcast.Rocher Hotel: A Date to Die For is a dating game show with three bachelor(ette)s, one of whom is a murderer going to kill them. In one game, Kaggy knows redasatomato is the killer, he just can't help himself. Murderer and Victim
  • Recap.Duck Tales A Duck Tales Valentine: Under the effects of Cupid's arrows, Launchpad falls in love with a shark. Luckily, the kids and Scrooge, who are very aware that Launchpad's attraction would result in a gruesome death, keep him away from it.
  • Bad Creepy Pasta: [Moral Event Horizon] The gang discuss this trope in their riff of Jeff the Killer Vs. Michael Myers, when Jeff the Killer and Jane the Killer start making out, despite being mortal enemies. Misuse
  • WMG.Kung Fu Panda: Expanding on the above idea that the villain will turn into Villainous Counterparts (Psycho Rangers?), and given Mantis' stated desire to find a nice girl, settle down and get his head bitten off, the next villain will be a female Praying Mantis. We get a Fatal Attraction for Mantis.

    Other Misuse 4/ 78 or 5.1%
  • Characters.Only Murders In The Building: [Jan Bellows] The reveal in the season finale that she is Tim's killer retroactively turns her and Charles's relationship into this. Retroactive, so not apparently dangerous
  • Literature.Pachinko: Sunja and Hansu. Noa and Akiko, his college girlfriend who ends up inadvertently revealing that Hansu is his father. She is also a wealthy racist, though she believes that she is open-minded. Solomon and Hanna, who ends up taking his money and ditching him when he is a teenager. Misindented, regardless, not apparently dangerous
  • Literature.Rebel Genius: Warrior Genius reveals that Pietro and Nerezza used to be a couple before she started suppressing artists. Not apparently dangerous
  • Webcomic.Feast For A King: [Belligerent Sexual Tension] Most obviously Dylan and Crimson, but really most fights or stand-offs we see have at least a bit of it; how things end up vary from dedicated husbands to a literal Fatal Attraction. Misuse for The Murder After

    ZCE / Pothole 22/ 78 or 28.2%

ZCE Usage: 16/22, 20.5% overall

Pothole Usage: 6/22, 7.7% overall

    Trope Wick instead of Movie Wick 6/ 78 or 7.6%

    Not Applicable 12/ 78 or 15.3%
