Saying Sound Effects Out Loud / Video Games

Go To

  • In Ace Attorney Investigations, Kay encourages Edgeworth to do his "schwing!" thing in reference to his Logic power (which goes schwing).
  • Lyle from Animal Crossing does this a lot. Bang.
  • Regardless if he finished his opponents off or not, Spring Man will often shout some of the violence-related words out loud in ARMS. Whatever if he says "Pow!" when throwing his opponents or "Boi-oi-oing!" when jumping off of the Mausoleum trampolines can be at least random when he says something.
  • Taokaka of BlazBlue uses this on occasion ("* slurp* "), but averted it at the worst possible time: the voice actor was captioned as saying "nom nom nom", but chose to make an eating sound instead. Bang Shishigami, being more, well, Japanese, does it with the Unsound Effect ("* glare* ") in addition to playing it straight ("* thud* ". Yes, he says "thud" when he loses in Story Mode.).
  • As with the television Buffy examples, the video game has Buffy, exasperated with the Scooby Gang's none-too-subtle hints that they'd like to go to the Bronze, actually say aloud, "Audible sigh..."
  • The original Command & Conquer had a Dummied Out "PEW PEW PEW" sound pack.
  • Parodied in The Curse of Monkey Island, when a rather nutty pirate who's just made Guybrush Threepwood walk the plank wonders aloud why he didn't hear any splash, and Guybrush yells out "Splash!" to allay his concerns; and it works!
  • The best weapon in Dead Space 2 is a foam finger known as the Hand Cannon. When you fire the primary attack, Isaac says "BANG! BANG!" When you fire the secondary attack, Isaac says "PEWPEWPEW!" It is exactly as hilarious as you are imagining. It can pop limbs off in just one hit, has unlimited range, and never runs out of ammunition (its only con is its lack of an aiming reticule). In Dead Space 3, you get the Devil Horns. They do the same thing but have only near unlimited ammo, so when you reload Isaac rocks out on an invisible guitar. But how do you get these weapons? For the first you have to beat the game on Hard Core mode and for the second you have to beat the game in Classic Mode in New Game Plus.
  • In Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, in her introductory chapter Flonne provides her own sound effects... while sneaking around Laharl's castle. "Woosh! Nin nin nin nin..."
  • Donkey Kong 64 has a weird take on this trope. In the Frantic Factory stage, there's a certain area where a loud, goopy splattering noise can be heard. It is very obviously a clip of some guy yelling "Splot!"
  • In Dream Daddy, one of Joseph's voice clips has him saying "WINK!"
  • In The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, the combat dialogue for male vampires includes a chance that they will say "Hiss." at you in a fairly serious tone.
  • An unusual variation in Enchanted Scepters. The narration "A huge tidal wave roars from the south" is accompanied by the sound of an animal roaring, followed by a splash.
  • In Endless Frontier, one of Aschen's quotes is "Shiiiiiiiiiin...". which is the Japanese sound effect for (silence).
  • In Fairy Fencer F, when Fang first meets the villainous Zenke, he declares himself a hero and says "fwoosh." Zenke asks just what this is supposed to mean and Fang says it's the sound of the wind, causing Zenke's fairy, Della, to comment on this being stupid.
  • In the Silver Shroud radio show of Fallout 4, the Mistress of Mystery says “GASP!!” when she find something surprising.
  • Final Fantasy IV (the US Final Fantasy 2 release) had Rydia scream "Screeeam!" at one point.
  • In Final Fantasy X, Rikku explains her Fear of Thunder to Tidus, telling him that when she was a kid, she was attacked by a fiend at the beach and that her Brother tried to beat it back with a spell, but missed and hit her instead. "It was a Thunder spell. — Bzzzzzzt!"
  • Fire Emblem: Awakening:
    • This scene with Inigo and Owain's C Support.
      Inigo: Sigh.
Owain: Okay, just stop. You're not even sighing. You're just saying the word "sigh".
    • Lon'qu also does this in his supports with Nowi when she gets him to play farmer with her.
      Lon'qu: Chop, chop! Shovel!
  • In Fire Emblem Engage, Yunaka tries to sell her loss of the Emblem Ring she dropped (after she had stolen it) by crying fake tears to Alear and Alfred while saying "sniffle sniffle" out loud.
  • In Gears of War, the aptly named Boomer enemies will say 'BOOM!' in a deep, menacing voice before firing their grenade launchers at the player. In the sequels, different variants of Boomers appear (Grinders, Maulers, and several more) that will say the sound effects of their weapons before they attack ('GRIND!', 'CRUSH!').
    • Which is then parodied in at least one song, as the singer yells "CALL ATTACK!"
  • Mahira from Granblue Fantasy will vocalize certain sound effects depending on what she's doing ("Pon poko pon!" when using her drums in battle or "Donka chi, don don" while using a hammer during a Fate Episode), and she's fond of imitating chickens.
  • Half-Life 2 has a sound mod, were pretty much every sound effect is replaced by the creators voice, and yes you can use it for Garry's Mod. Video here.
  • A skull cut from Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary would have replaced the sound effects with 343 Industries employees saying them out loud.
  • In Iji, Asha tends to make these after you get the Scrambler.
    Asha: TOOT TOOT
    Asha: BEEP BEEP
    Asha: PEW PEW PEW
  • In The King of Fighters series, when using up one of his power-up stocks, Shingo will shout "Shakiiin!", which is the sound of something sparkling.
  • In Kingdom of Loathing, your character imitates certain ranged weapons while firing them, leading to combat messages like "You point at your enemy and say 'Pew pew pew!' Then you remember you have an actual gun, so you just shoot them."
  • In The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Salvatore tries to increase the immersion of his battleship minigame by producing the sound effects himself: "Spliiish. Spliiish. Ka-boooom!" The Japanese version had a different voice actor, but the principle is the same.
    • Breath of the Wild, when you get Hestu to upgrade your inventory capacity, he sings the "Item Get!" jingle along with the actual game interface.
  • Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Deadpool again. "Bang! Bang Bang Bang! Bang Bang Bang Bang!" And in his own game he often says "beep, boop" whenever pressing buttons.
  • In Mega Man Battle Network 4, a villain does this on ACCIDENT due to a translation error. While actions had previously been denoted with *asterisks* , as such, the Big Bad narmfully yells "GRIN!"
  • Liquid Ocelot in Metal Gear Solid 4: Bang! Bang! Points his finger at the helicopters and puts a S.O.P. lock on them!
  • No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle has Dr. Letz Shake, who has such things as "SHOCKED GASP" and "DERISIVE LAUGHTER."
  • In Overwatch promotional videos, The Cracker Sombra taps a corrupt politician on the nose with a playful "Boop!" while Blackmailing her, and later repeats the gesture at the camera. With the politician, it doubles as a veiled threat, since it's imitating something the politician does with her young daughter.
  • Literally everything in Pencil Whipped, a game whose aesthetics looks like pencil drawings on a notepad coming to life. Enemies will verbally state "SLAP! SLAP!" when attacking, while blade deathtraps goes "SHING! SHING!" and swinging pendulums goes "WHOOSH! WHOOSH!"... it's as hilarious as it sounds.
  • Some of the defective turrets in Portal 2 are aware of their inability to fire bullets, and decide that they'd have better luck trying to pass their inspection in a different way:
Turret: Uh... Blam! Blam blam blam! I'm not defective!
  • In PriPara when the player's PriTicket is about to print, the character they played as yells noises like "Kyuuun!", "Babaa~n!", "Dondondon!" and "Pon! Pon!" as information is put onto the ticket. This was removed around the time the Kami incarnation started, likely to prevent people from stealing the QRs and because the player got a random item during the first installment of that incarnation.
  • Some Mooks in River City Ransom do this when you beat them.
  • The "Zzt!" sound of laying down power lines in SimCity 2000 was a placeholder recorded by series creator Will Wright. The developers liked it so much that they left it in.
  • E-102 Gamma in Sonic Adventure says "pick up," "put down," and "throw" out loud when handling objects (or Chao).
  • One or more of the web-spinners in Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions will exclaim "BOP!" in the middle of combat.
  • Star Wars: The Old Republic: The Sith Inquisitor PC when they want somebody to cut to the chase: "Yawn."
  • The Fighter from START AGAIN START AGAIN START AGAIN: a prologue is prone to this, combining it with Calling His Attacks in combat — all of his techniques are named for the things he exclaims while using them, like "SMASH!!!", "KABOOM!!!", "YOUR TURN!!!" and "KEEP GOING!!!"
    The Fighter: Clap clap clap!
The Researcher: [SIGH] You can just actually clap instead of saying "clap clap clap" out loud.
    The Fighter: Never!!!!
  • In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, when Kirby uses R.O.B.'s Eye Beams, he makes a cute "Beep!" sound.
  • Tales of Zestiria: Edna, being a Little Miss Snarker archetype, says "spin spin spin" amongst her Kung-Fu Wizard movements.
  • Team Fortress 2: The Scout says "Boink!" and "Bonk!", subject to many a Memetic Mutation.
    • The Heavy does this a lot:
      • "Ya-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta ya-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta budda-budda-ta-ta-ta Ka-Boom! Ka-Boom!"
      • "VZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZRATATATATATATATATATATA!!! VRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!! WAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!"
      • During his killtaunt, he has to make the "pow!" noise of his Finger Gun himself. It still kills instantly.
    • While hitting something or an enemy with the Ullapool Caber, he will say "KA-BEEEEEUUUUUUM!!!!" or "KA-BLOOEEEEHHH!" upon a sucessFul hit. Though this is sometimes said out loud.
    • The Sniper will say "Stab, stab, stab!" whenever he uses the taunt kill with the Huntsman.
    • Soldier's robot costume: "Beep Boop Bleep Bloop Robot Noises"
    • The Pyro makes his own guitar noises for his melee weapon taunt.
    • For some weapons (namely, The Third Degree and the Neon Annihilator), the weapon itself plays a guitar riff.
  • In Toonstruck, if you talk to Bricabrac after getting the outline of your overarching quest:
    Drew: Hi, Bricabrac.
Bricabrac: Who is this... Bricabrac? The name sounds familiar, but, for the life of me, I can't seem to place the face.
    Drew: He's you.
    Bricabrac: Who's who?
    Flux: You are Bricabrac.
Bricabrac: Yes, of course I'm Bricabrac — uh-oh, did you two sillies forget who I was?
    Flux: Groan.
    Drew: Heavy sigh.
  • Undertale has Lesser Dog, which starts by saying semi-reasonable things like "pant pant", then edges into Unsound Effects like "excited noises." As you pet it more, it starts making cartoony nonsense sounds like "kettle whistling" and "plane takeoff."
    • If you compliment Mettaton's voice during the battle with him, he says he has the voice of a siren, and then says "Awooga!"
    • In battle, Froggits say "Meow." and Final Froggits say "Woof." - apparently saying the actual words. When you talk to Froggits outside of battle, they communicate by saying "Ribbit, ribbit." with translations provided in parentheses.
    • When you first meet Napstablook, his dialogue box reads "zzzzzzzzz" to indicate snoring, as he's apparently asleep. Then a few dialogue boxes later, the game points out that he's actually just saying "z" over and over, since he's just pretending to be asleep.
  • Warhammer 40,000: Darktide: Chaos Sorceresses say "Buzz buzz buzz" when taunting the Player Party from the dark, in-between arguing with the voices in her head.
  • In chapter 4 of Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Manana vocalises the word 'gasp' upon realising that her cooking pot had been emptied when she went for another helping. The following morning, Sena is the first to find out that their remaining provisions had been stolen, and, imitating what Manana had previously done, lets out a loud 'GASP' herself to alert the others.
