Fridge.Psychonauts: "Fred"'s an unassuming, affable-enough-sounding name that was probably picked to give the Nice Guy with a Famous Ancestor an inverted Sesquipedalian Smith kind of name. Turns a little ironic when you consider that Napoleon was actually a pretty big fan of a guy named Fred.
Characters.Harry Potter Hufflepuff: A slightly more literal example; his family name is 'Smith' but his given name is a very uncommon Biblical name.
Wrestling.Rico Constantino: Inverted as Rico Constantino with his first name shortened, completely averted with his full name.
Characters.Pacific Rim Humans: Invoked — he named himself after his favorite historical figure (Hannibal) and his second favorite Chinese restaurant (the otherwise unremarkable name Chau). The result is the very catchy name "Hannibal Chau".
Characters.Wasteland California Factions: It's standard for members of the clergy to adopt this sort of name as a Rite-of-Passage Name Change, taking a relevant noun as their first name as a sort of meaningful title and personal statement of intent.
Characters.Psychonauts The Real World: Inverted, befitting of a down-to-earth Nice Guy who's content considering himself to be pretty unassuming despite his impressive-sounding lineage.
Webcomic.Nuzlocke Comics Fan Works: Cover Identity Anomaly: When he doesn't know the name of the grunt whose outfit it is, and has to check on an ID card - which says 'Becky Smith'. He tries to pass it off as being a Fauxreigner, saying first "It's short for... Beckisander" and then "It's pronounced Beikai. Beikaisander... Smith." The desk-grunt waves him through on a "the chances of it being fake aren't worth the hassle if it's genuine" policy. He then encounters the real Becky Smith upstairs recovering, at which point his cover is blown anyway. Basically, this whole sequence runs on the Rule of Funny like cars run on petrol.
JustForFun.TV Tropes Additional Hero Vows Pod B: I shall adopt a plain and mundane name, such as Bob, or Alice, or something just as common. Those with an Awesome McCoolname, like The Destroyer, tend to last two seconds in a fight. Those with boring names, they can take out entire armies. A combination of names is also not unheard of.
AvatarTheLastAirbender.Tropes Q To Z: In "The King of Omashu", while disguised as an old man, Aang identifies himself as "Bonzu Pipinpadaloxicopolis III", and says that Katara and Sokka are his grandkids. Katara then immediately says her name is "June Pipinpadaloxicopolis". Somehow, she manages to pronounce the name exactly the same way, as does the king.
ReferencedBy.Go Lion: Voltron: When the Voltron Force forms Voltron and shouts, "Let's go, Voltron!" or "Let's go, Voltron Force!", they're actually matching the GoLion Team shout of "Let's GoLion!" Keith's name might be a reference to how he's nicknamed "Chief (Chifu)" in GoLion. Although it's retroactive, Keith is named "Keith Akira Kogane" and Hunk is named "Tsuyoshi Garrett" in comics and sequels of Voltron (Lion Force), which reference the original names of their counterparts in GoLion. Raible (referencing The Bible) is renamed Coran (referencing The Qur'an) in Voltron, thus somewhat preserving the reference.
Creator.Elle Mac Pherson: Played straight, then inverted. She was born Eleanor Gow. Her parents divorced when she was a teenager and her mother married a man named MacPherson. Elle took the new surname and balanced it out by shortening her first name.
VideoGame.Mystery Trackers: The Brown family members all have lengthy first names to go with their very common surname.
Creator.L Sprague De Camp: In Solomon's Stone, the hero finds himself in a world populated by the figures people daydream of being. Everyone has a Sesquipedalian Smith name, indicating first the daydream and then the mundane reality.
Characters.Aveyond: Invokes this in her introduction, where she tells the party to call her "Elini".
Recap.Animaniacs Episode 56: Inverted: Professor Otto von Schnitzelpusskrakengescheitmeyer. Lampshaded in the Friendship Song.
Characters. The Guided Fate Paradox: All the angels, with the exception Galtion, has their name end in "-el"note Hebrew for "God" or "of God", which is typical angel Theme Naming. However, they all surprisingly have last names, which Renya lampshades, and said last names are Japanese.
IThoughtItMeant.A To C: Ambiguously Brown: Ambiguously Brown should not be confused with Sesquipedalian Smith. Nor Encyclopedia Brown. Or Doc Brown being ambiguous. Nor is it someone who might be a member of the Brown family. Nor is it something/somebody who/that might be brown but it's never said so.
Film.Whispering Smith: Smith's first name is actually Luke, but most folks call him "Whispering" Smith.
Fanfic.Freudian: The police gave Rapunzel a very mundane surname, although it's implied that "Rapunzel" is not the name her parents have given her, either. It's lampshaded by Flynn: Flynn: Rapunzel Smith? That's quite a contrast in names there.
Series.Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Kimberly Ann Hart. Helps seal the idea that she's the "hot popular girl," especially after becoming class president Kimberly Hart in one episode.
Literature.Mrs Dalloway: Septimus Smith. Woolf even lampshades this trope: London has swallowed up many millions of young men called Smith; thought nothing of fantastic Christian names like Septimus with which their parents have thought to distinguish them.
Characters.Passione 24 Hours: According to the intro narration, his full name is Giorno Giovavavavavavava... and in Episode 1, Bucciarati calls him "Giorno Giovavavavana".
Characters.Detectives United: He comes from a family of these. Rafael, Angelina, Arabella, Mortimer, and Dorian are all quite lengthy and interesting first names - and then the family surname is Brown.
VideoGame. The Guided Fate Paradox: Most of the angels' first names follow traditional angelic theme naming, but their last names are Japanese. Renya even lampshades it, wondering how angels have last names, and Japanese ones at that.
Literature.Night Watch Discworld: Somewhat-comic gravedigger Legitimate First ("Leggy" to his friends). "I've always wondered about his name. I mean... Legitimate?" "Can't blame a mother for being proud, Nobby."
Characters.Crossing Jordan: Inverted. Dr. Mahesh Vijayaraghavensatyanaryanamurthy. Even his name tag is shortened to Dr V.R.S.Murthy.
Characters.Backyard Sports: Her first name, Jocinda, is decidedly uncommon, especially compared to her last name, Smith.
UsefulNotes.Japanese Pronouns: A semi-example in Ever17: Tanaka Yuubiseiharukana prefers to shorten her name to "Yuu"/"You", and everyone addresses her as that. She even lampshades it in her introduction: "I am You!"
Literature.Encyclopedia Brown: "Encyclopedia" Brown. Somewhat subverted in that it's a nickname; his real name is Leroy, but only his parents and teachers call him that.
Music.Sufjan Stevens: Sufjan himself. And he has a brother named Marzuki Stevens and sisters named Djohariah Stevens and Djamilah Stevens.... as well as siblings named Colin and Megan.
VideoGame.Grim Tales: Although Anna Gray averts the trope herself, many of the names on her family tree qualify for it. This includes her mother, Anastasia Gray; her great-grandfather, Alister Gray; and her husband, Dorian Gray. Dorian gets bonus points for originally having been Dorian Black, meaning he fit the trope twice. (He took his wife's name when they married.)
Characters.Indiana Jones: The Trope Codifier. His impressive first name, Indiana, contrasts his mundane surname, Jones.
