     Personality/Subculture 40/ 50 (80%)

1. Troperiffic Adventures

  • Dark Action Girl: April Showers, a vaguely Emo assassin from a much Darker and Edgier background than most people on Thera. She grew up in the aforementioned megacity of Neo Dystopolis.

2. New Media

  • Fotolog, despite being headquartered in New York City, is extraordinarily popular in Spain and South America, to the point where the Argentinian equivalent of emo/scene fashion was known as the "Flogger". Eventually, though, as Facebook started to gain more acceptance in Argentina, and a few violent episodes covered by the media involving Floggers, starting in March 2009 (end of summer vacations) Flogger fashion started to lay down quietly.

3. Vannamelon

  • Fluttershy playing this game in which a pony who looks like Rainbow Dash has to get its hair done. It has wild black hair, which she thinks looks "emo" and a description with some You No Take Candle phrases like "Our little pony would back to school".

4. Video Games

5. Total Drama Presents: The Ridonculous Race

  • Goth: They seem to be more of the Emo variant, as opposed to Gwen's Perky Goth personality.

6-7. King's Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow

  • Crocodile Tears: Alexander acts all Emo in the Pawn Shop and pretends that all hope is lost without Cassima while pretending to cry, and fakes suicide by drinking the "Drink Me" potion. This gambit is an effort to trick Shamir and the guard dogs into lowering their guard for entry into the castle. It doesn't actually change anything in or around the castle, though — it serves an entirely different purpose — and you still need a different method of getting in.
  • Drama Queen: Or shall we say "Drama Prince"? Alexander sure acts like one while he is feigning suicide in front of Shamir Shamazel and the Pawn Shop Owner. Alex's sad eyebrows and frowning mouth in the Windows-enhanced version makes the drama acting more depressing, as if he were about to cry.

8. Shameless Self-Promoter

"Once they've turned every available inch of their account into one big, obnoxious ad for themselves, the Shameless Self-Promoter will then go on the offensive. They may go slowly at first, one piece of ego stoking Self-Insert Fic here, one link to their boring website there, but eventually they will get to the point where they'll be starting whole threads based on some piece of crappy Fan Art they drew or Emo poem they wrote. These threads will typically go on for several pages (with half the posts being by the self promoter) and will only end when the Shameless Self-Promoter stops getting praise and goes off to advertise themselves in a thread that people actually care about."
— St. Duckluck the Humble, Savior of the People.

9. Marvel: Avengers Academy: Event Students

  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Has issues working with the Winter Soldier due to his Emo personality, and the Red Skull because of his aggression and misogyny.

10. Yokai Watch Heartful Tribe To Slippery Tribe

  • Emo: Plays on this stereotype with his melancholic attitude and fashion sense.

11. I Want to Be a Real Man

Compare with the The Idiot from Osaka, Hot-Blooded, No True Scotsman, and contrast Emo (in any of its forms), often overlaps with Loser Protagonist. Also heavily overlaps with I Just Want to Be Badass given that the concepts of badass and manly are frequently interconnected.

12. Arcs and Episodes

  • Lily had a high school phase as an Emo Perky Goth where, surprisingly, she was a lot more abrasive and confrontational than she currently is. Even if this was around the point she met Marshall for the first time, Lily feels really embarrassed about her phase and would really not talk about it. She doesn't mean any offense to any actual goths and enthusiasts, but looking at them certainly does flare her up with awkward and frustrated thoughts. While different in context, these were thoughts that were shared with Dana Zane; her teen years were basically her being "the Merriam-Webster definition of a ‘shallow jerkwad’”, a far cry from the Benevolent Boss she would become later down her line and she obviously hates being reminded of it. She finds Lily being rather relatable on that topic and conversed that Dana gets why she would cringe anytime her goth phase would be bought up. The two get along pretty well, though Lily is not above taking a few potshots at Dana by forcing her to serve a bodyguard role for either her friends or her children. While Dana gets annoyed a number of times, she'll still treat Lily with a measure of respect and even help her and her friends out if she can.

13. My Immortal

14. '90s Hair

  • It is arguable that Cloud and Sephiroth's haircuts in Final Fantasy VII (which came out in 1997) are caricatured, Anime Hair versions of the curtains style - Sephiroth's centre-parted and extremely long, Cloud's also with a strong parting but with the asymmmetrical shagginess exaggerated to spikes. Later, realistic interpretations of Cloud's hairstyle portrayed it as a '00s Emo cut (Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children came out in 2005, and the designs were later incorporated into Final Fantasy VII Remake). There’s also Aerith’s '90s hair curtains and braided ponytail and Tifa’s extremely long and wavy hair with side bangs which had to be shortened due to graphic limitations in the aforementioned remake and Advent Children. Can’t forget Barrett’s fade either.

15. Death Note

  • Then there's the High School AU of course where L and the Wammy's kids are a big happy family and the Kiras are troubled, outcast Emo kids.

16. Supernatural Angst

  • Touhou is chock full of supernaturals in the form of little girls, some of whom are or were humans. Most of them think it's kickass to be a supernatural, but the angsting ones are more notable:
    • Medicine Melancholy finds that being an animated doll —and the power that animates her is magical ultra-lethal toxin— is a miserable state of existence. She hates everyone, but mellows a bit after she finds acceptance amongst the folks of Eientei (who themselves are a bunch of screwed-up people).

17. Western Animation

18. MySims

19. A Slap On Titan

20-24. Guys Being Dudes

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Along with several characters gaining Emo tendencies, Arlo and Candela's previous relationship and its weight on them both is given more elaboration than the source material.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Gender-Inverted with Spark, who serves as a softer and more outwardly affectionate counterpart to Arlo's Emo villain with a troubled past and difficulties showing affection.
  • Ceiling Banger: One of the factors that drives Sierra to decide Arlo needs to get laid in order to stop his descent into Emo madness is that he's been blasting Metalcore at all hours of the day and night, she lives in the room next to him, and she hasn't gotten a good night's sleep in weeks.
  • Coordinated Clothes: Elaphe got Spark an Emo band hoodie back when they were dating in hopes of being "one of those matchy couples", but Spark couldn't quite pull off the aesthetic and ended up not wearing it much.
  • Darker and Edgier: It's still the fundamentally idealistic world of Pokémon GO and most of the edgy content is lampshaded and Played for Laughs, but multiple characters gain Emo tendencies, the fic doesn't shy away from sexual innuendo, death threats, and pointing out that Pokemon are capable of killing humans, and everyone is more inclined to snark at their coworkers and enemies alike than in canon.

25. Fantasy Webcomics

26. Steven Universe

  • Humanized fan-works usually follow certain fanon:
    • Spinel's post-abandonment form is often translated into her being goth or emo, and she usually has a job in children's entertainment (with one AU popularizing her as a mascot at Chuck E. Cheese).

27. Hiding Behind Your Bangs

  • The King of Fighters: Iori Yagami has this, as he's somewhat of a tribute to Yashiro Nightow's character designs. NOT Emo either, as he predates the fad by several years (his debut game was in 1995).

28. We Are Our Avatars Three

%%* Emo

29. Drawception

30. Troperiffic Adventures

  • Dark Action Girl: April Showers, a vaguely Emo assassin from a much Darker and Edgier background than most people on Thera. She grew up in the aforementioned megacity of Neo Dystopolis.

31. Vampire Knight

  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: Haruka and Juri, but they make it look adorable. That is, if you forget about the, er... squicky-ness of it.
    Juri: Haruka!!
    Haruka: Juri!!
Juri: Come heeere!! Where had you gone~~~?!
Haruka: Nowhere, you just ran off ahead and I was catching up.
    Juri: KYA
    Haruka: KYA
Kaien (in inner monologue): [watches Haruka and Juri] By the time I had noticed... There was an unexpectedly pink world spreading near my gloomy corner where I clung to dreams filled with darkness...

32. Nemi

  • It's Popular, Now It Sucks!:
    • Another strip has a emo kid asking why Nemi is talking about The Lord of The Rings since that movie came out years ago. Nemi internally debates with herself if she should punch the kid, or if she should just rejoice the fact that she finally gets to have the world's best book series for herself again. She settles for punching the kid.

33. Not Cool

  • Camp Straight: Both Shane Dawson as Scott and Drew Monson as Joel come off this way, reflecting their real-life YouTube personas (this film was made a year before Shane came out as bi). The fact that Scott is supposed to be a sensitive, emo-haired artistic guy who doesn't even know how many points are scored in a touchdown makes it kind of hard to believe a Pittsburgh high school voted him the prom king.

34. Sanders Sides S 2 E 9 Embarrasing Phases The Nightmare Instead Of Christmas

  • Cringe Comedy: Everyone revisits some of Thomas's phases, including his cosplay phase, his emo phase, and his Vine phase. Audience members squirm with secondhand embarrassment even as they laugh.

35. Nentir Vale

  • Emo: With their "edgy" appearance and living in the plane of despair, a common joke among fans is that Shadar-Kai round out the trifecta of Elven cliques, along with goth Drow and prep High Elves.

36. Twitch Plays Pokémon FireRed

  • Emo: Believed to be this, due to having Perish Song as an attack.

37. Personality Blood Types

  • The indie RPG Cthulhu Saves the World has Umi, one of the party members, bring this up as banter. Umi states that her blood type is B+, making her a cheery person. Unfortunately, the other party members are the Great Old One-turned-hero, a talking sword, a goth necromancer, an alien, a crazy priest and a demon-dragon. These members respectively have ink, nothing, Uranium, and acid. Not even two other human members can give expectable answers, as the old man is insane, and therefore cannot remember his blood type, and the necromancer, being Emo, says she's got pain for blood.

38. Elephant's Dream

Emo gets Emo

39. Fan Works

  • Guys Being Dudes: It's still the fundamentally idealistic world of Pokémon GO and most of the edgy content is lampshaded and Played for Laughs, but multiple characters gain Emo tendencies, the fic doesn't shy away from sexual innuendo, death threats, and pointing out that Pokemon are capable of killing humans, and everyone is more inclined to snark at their coworkers and enemies alike than in canon.

40. Harry Potter

  • The bit when Harry gets a peek into Snape's mind. It's supposed to be a profound, tense moment where our hero gets some insight into his great nemesis's past. But when you see a brief shot of young Snape sitting in what can only be described as an Emo corner, it's hard to take seriously.

    Music 9/ 50 (18%)

1. Emo Music

Emo isn't just a subculture, you know. It's a form of music — and woefully misunderstood, if that.

2.A Day to Remember

A Day to Remember is a band from Ocala, Florida mainly known for their unusual amalgamation of Metalcore, Pop Punk, Emo, and even a few smatterings of Death Metal in their music.

3. TXT

TXT's style takes an (initially) more whimsical approach than both their label-mates and most Korean boy groups, fully embracing their youthfulness and incorporating fairy tale and fantasy elements into their work. This is seen both in their music - with references to things from orangeade to Harry Potter and a playful, nostalgic, and sometimes sentimental pop sound -, and their concept and music videos - which take a fairytale-esque way of storytelling. However, both their sound and music videos can sometimes take a surprisingly dark turn, with later works incorporating Emo elements from genres like electronic music and rock.

4. What the Fuck Is Wrong with You?

5-6.Special Cases

  • The Australian "Don't Be A Dickhead" PSA campaign run in Victoria by VicRoads lasted from 2009-2010, and it shows. The PSAs included scenarios that happened as a result of somebody using their mobile phone while driving, such as "gingaz" getting laid, redheads earning wings, and emos being born. Those scenarios date the PSAs to when people with red hair and people who identified as emo were easily mocked.
  • Video on Trial dates itself to the high points of the mid-to-late-2000s celebrity-bashing culture, especially when it came to pop superstars. The show was already starting to get dated by the time it was cancelled in 2014. Some of the more frequent targets can instantly date episodes, for example My Chemical Romance were mocked as emo culture was a go-to punching bag in the 2000s, but then Emo Music, MCR included, became Vindicated by History.

7. Music

  • My Chemical Romance: Do not mention that you think they're emo, particularly to singer Gerard Way, who has voiced his hatred for emo many times and really doesn't like people labelling them as an emo band. (For the record, they're pop punk or alternative rock.)

8. Billie Eilish

  • Emo: Though softer and poppier, her music and aesthetic both have clear influences from the genre. Her songs are also often about self-loathing.

9. Bullet for My Valentine

  • Emo: A hybrid of this, heavy/thrash metal, and metalcore.

     Others 1/ 50 (2%)

1. Komi Can't Communicate - Other Characters

  • Emoyama Yuragi - A girl who likes Emo thingsnote . She bears witness to many poignant happenings around school, reacting with profound delight.
