Warning! All spoilers below are unmarked.
The Main Trio
- The Power of Friendship: They defeat the Devil in the Good Ending by standing together and facing their fears.
- Two Girls and a Guy: If you choose the female protagonist, Ben will be the only boy in the group.
- Two Guys and a Girl: If you choose the male protagonist, Sally will be the only girl in the group.
- True Companions: The Player, Ben, and Sally become this over the course of the game. This gets thrown completely out of the window in the Bad Ending, as Ben murders everyone in town, including Sally, and gives the Player a Fate Worse than Death.
- Younger Than They Look: Their MV Edition portraits make them look almost like adults despite being children.
The protagonist of the game that recently moved to Creelles Town with their mother. It is their job to defeat various creepypastas alongside Ben and Sally in order to save Creelles Town.
- Canon Name: Luke and Luna.
- The Chosen One: Bloo-Dee tells them this word for word.
- Disappeared Dad: There's zero mention of the protagonist's father.
- Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: The male protagonist.
- Eyes Out of Sight: The male protagonist has his eyes covered by his hair, but only in the cover art. In-game, he appears to be Hiding Behind His Bangs than rather than having his eyes covered completely.
- Fate Worse than Death: Ben gives one to the player in the bad ending, cursing them to be trapped with him for all eternity.
- Featureless Protagonist: They have no defined personality traits or characterization so the player can freely project onto them.
- Heroic Mime: While the heroic part is dependent on the player, the protagonist doesn't say very much at all.
- Hiding Behind Your Bangs: The female protagonist's portrait in the MV Edition.
- Friendship Denial: You can refuse to participate in the friendship moment between Sally and Ben on Day Four, but this will result in you getting an instant game over from being possessed by Zalgo.
- Identical Stranger: The male protagonist looks weirdly similar to Jeff the Killer. Although he doesn't have a Glasgow Grin like Jeff, they both have the same white hoodie and messy black hair. However, this isn't brought up or commented on in-game.
- Perpetual Frowner: Once again, the male protagonist.
- Prayer Is a Last Resort: The player is sometimes given the option to pray when faced with creepypasta entities. Surprisingly, this is actually the correct option in some cases.
- Purely Aesthetic Gender: The player can be either male or female, but this has no bearing on the story or gameplay.
- Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Bloo-Dee says the seal that protected the town from creepypastas was broken when the player moved in.
A friendly, yet cowardly boy that the protagonist meets on Day 2 after their arrival at Creelles Town. Despite his fears, he tries to help the protagonist and Sally the best he can.
- Ax-Crazy: Becomes this in the bad ending after he realizes he's just a game character and is slowly being taken over by Ben Drowned. Afterwards, he kills everyone in the town and gives the player a Fate Worse than Death.
- Character Development: Ben easily freaks out when he and the protagonist first encounter the creepypastas. As he is forced to encounter more over the next few days, he understandably becomes desensitized to them. Of course, part of this is because he is the slowly being possessed by Ben Drowned.
- Lovable Coward: The most easily scared and reactionary out of the group.
- Lovable Nerd: He has a plethora of comic books and technology spread across his room floor, but is perhaps one of the nicest (and sanest) characters in the game. Unless you betray his trust, that is.
- O.O.C. Is Serious Business: On Day Five he loses his glasses after following a mysterious voice and Sally remarks that he seems less expressive than usual. He doesn't scream when confronted by creepypastas either. Ben tells her he has no hope and feels like they've met with a terrible fate.
- Sanity Slippage: Happens over the course of the game as he realizes he's just a video game character and is being taken over by Ben Drowned. If you choose to sleep on Day Five rather than getting all the medals and obtaining the Absolute Holy Power, he crosses the Despair Event Horizon and goes on a killing spree, leaving everyone but the player dead.
- Self-Made Orphan: In the Bad Ending, Ben completely snaps and kills everyone in the town, including his own parents.
A mysterious girl that appears in the player's house on Day 3 after they wake up from a nightmare. Although she can be a bit strange at times, she's rather lonely and just wants friends.
- Ambiguous Situation: It is never clarified if Sally is supposed to be an apparition of Sally Maryam Williams from the creepypasta "Play With Me". While her character model makes it clear that she is based off of Sally Williams, it is unknown if, like Ben, she's able to be possessed by her creepypasta character. In the bad ending, she's never possessed, and is even easily killed by Ben. She does tell the protagonist that she is not human. It's possible that, like in her respective creepypasta, she is a poltergeist, but a benevolent one.
- Arbitrary Skepticism: She has a hard time believing Sonic the Hedgehog is standing right in front of her despite believing in ghosts, seeing Bloody Mary, and seeing the Tails Doll beforehand. This gets lampshaded by Ben.
- Creepy Child: She's completely unfazed by all the insanity around her, even going as far as trying to befriend creepypastas at some points. When Ben suggests killing the malevolent Tails Doll, Sally threatens to kill him slowly and drink his blood. This is largely due to her being abandoned by her parents and growing up in a theater with no people her age. Luckily, she gets better over the course of the game and starts being nicer.
- Friendless Background: She grew up in an abandoned theater and had no friends. The only person Sally had to talk to was her cousin, Samira (who acted as her caregiver) and her imaginary friends.
- I Just Want to Have Friends: When Ben calls Sally an insane girl, she breaks down in tears, saying her childhood was lonely and she just wants friends. Ben apologizes and they vow to always be friends.
- Killed Offscreen: She, along with everyone else, gets killed by Ben in the Bad Ending, but we don't see her corpse.
- Nightmare Fetishist: She thinks the creepypastas are either cool or silly and tries to befriend some of them, but Ben finds this strange.
- Parental Abandonment: Sally's parents are implied to have abandoned her from a young age.
- Youthful Freckles: She has these in her sprite.
Creepypastas
- Ax-Crazy: Majority of them are this by default. You can count the number of non-malicous creepypastas on your fingers. Ben himself will slip into this if he becomes fully possessed by the Ben Drowned creepypasta.
- Flat Character: In the game, they exist to scare you and that's about it.
- Jump Scare: They will be doing this to you a lot throughout the game.
- One-Shot Character: A lot of them appear once and never again. Of the creepypastas, the ones who appear more than once include Jeff the Killer, Sonic.exe, Laughing Jack, Tails Doll, Slender Man, SmileDog, and the Rake. One-shot creepypastas include Bloody Mary (even though Bloody Mary is an Urban Legend, not a creepypasta), Pinkie Pie (Cupcakes wasn't intended to be a creepypasta), Giygas (also not a creepypasta), Squidward's Suicide, Buried Alive, White Hand, Lost Silver, Suicide Mouse, Jane the Killer, Eyeless Jack, Hoodie, Masky, and Herobrine.
- Sensory Abuse: Another thing they like to do a lot. Expect a jumpscare to be accompanied by an ear-piercingly loud scream.
The titular infamous killer from the Jeff the Killer Creepypasta. He is found in the basement on Day 1 after the player moves into their new home.
- Anti-Climax: When the player encounters Jeff, the screen turns red and he says his iconic "Go to sleep" catchphrase, but if the player chooses to pray, he'll back off. Alternatively, choosing to run gets you immediately killed.
- Character Catchphrase: "Go to sleep..."
- Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: When Jeff has a Heel–Face Turn, he calls the Devil useless and kills him. So basically, Jeff was able to kill the devil despite being a scrawny teenage boy in a hoodie.
- Glasgow Grin: His most iconic trait.
- Heel–Face Turn: Jeff is impressed by The Power of Friendship that the player, Ben, and Sally possess, which results in him turning against his own boss, killing him, and ending the curse in the process.
- We Will Meet Again: Says he'll get the player next time and their God won't be able to save them.
- Serial Killer: This one is self-explanatory.
A suicidal version of Squidward from the lost episode creepypasta titled Squidward's Suicide. Ben and the Player encounter him in the abandoned theater on Day 4.
- Caps Lock: He yells nonstop.
- Driven to Suicide: Just like in the original creepypasta, Squidward commits suicide...and that's about it. He arguably does the least of all the creepypastas.
- Harmless Enemy: Notably one of the few non-malicous creepypastas. He says he wants to be left alone before shooting himself on stage shortly afterwards.
- Leave Me Alone!: Repeatedly screams at Ben and the Player that he wants to be left alone, before deciding the only way to do that is to kill himself.
- Tears of Blood: Has these for reasons that are unknown.
- Greyscale of Evil: He's a completely monochrome and murderous clown.
- Laughing Mad: This is a given. Strangely, the audio used for his laugh seems to have been ripped from the Death Note anime.
- Monster Clown: Well, duh.
- You Can't Fight Fate: Jack taunts Ben with the insinuation that he will become Ben Drowned.
A demonic entity that originated from the Sonic.exe Creepypasta. The Player, Ben, and Sally encounter him in the mountains on Day 3.
- Character Catchphrase: "I am God", of course. He says it before chasing Ben, Sally, and the Player through Dead Hill Zone.
- Eldritch Abomination: According to his backstory in the Creepypasta, Sonic.exe isn't actually the real Sonic, but he just takes on Sonic's form.
- Hide-and-Seek Horror: Well, he says "let's play hide and seek", but then just chases the Player down a hallway.
- Super-Speed: He's an Eldritch Abomination that takes on the form of Sonic, so he has super speed. Slender Man is faster than him, though.
- Tears of Blood: His most iconic trait.
A demonic canine from the Smile Dog creepypasta.
- Animalistic Abomination: Its a demonic husky.
- Scary Teeth: Its teeth don't make it the most friendly-looking dog.
- Slasher Smile: It has a wide grin with human teeth.
- Super-Speed: It's not stated outright that Smile Dog had this ability, but it does run very fast and requires precise movement to get around. Smile Dog's speed is lowered in the MV Edition.
A demon encountered in the abandoned house on Day 5. In his own words, he's from a creepypasta that will exist in the future. He tells Ben and Sally that they're all video game characters being played with by the Player, which they refuse to believe.
- Ambiguous Situation: Says he's from a creepypasta that will exist in the future, but it's not clear how far in the future this is. There hasn't been anything from the creator about a Fourth-Wall Demon creepypasta since the game's release back in 2015. So how does the Fourth-Wall Demon exist when he also doesn't exist?
- Bald Mystic: Has a bald head to symbolize him being enlightened about the nature of his existence as a video game character.
- Caps Lock: Most of his dialogue is in capital letters.
- Death Seeker: He says being trapped in a game is painful and his goal is to make Ben to remember that he's actually Ben Drowned so he can free them. As we see in the bad ending, "freeing" in this case means killing everyone.
- Fission Mailed: He gives the Player a fake game-over screen, a jumpscare, and then sends them back to the last save spot.
- Guyliner: For a demon, he sure has killer eyeliner.
- Harmless Enemy: He doesn't really do anything to physically hurt the trio and only gives the Player a fake game-over. He honestly seems like a troll more than anything else.
- Nightmare Retardant: He's considered this in-universe. When he asks the trio why they aren't scared of him, Sally says it's because he looks funny, not scary.
- One-Shot Character: The demon tells Ben and Sally that they're just video game characters, gives the Player a fake game-over screen, sends them back to the last save spot, and then he dissapears from the game and is never seen or mentioned again.
- Pointy Ears
- Reality Warper: He can summon the game-over screen at will and sends the Player back to the last save spot after their encounter. Afterwards, Ben says he feels a strange sense of Déjà Vu.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: Subverted. Although he has red eyes and tries to position himself as someone to be taken seriously, he's not considered scary by the characters and he doesn't pose much of a threat.
- Third Eye: He has a third eye on his forehead, presumably for seeing past the fourth wall. He has no third eye in his MV Edition portrait, however.
Other Characters
The Player's Mother.
- Adults Are Useless: If you talk to her after the encounter with Jeff in the basement she'll ask if you're alright, but you're not given a choice to say anything. She also let's Sally (who was a stranger at that point) into their house on Day 3 while the protagonist was sleeping and makes it their responsibility to take care of her while she goes to work.
- Flat Character: She's your mom and that's all you need to know.
- Parental Obliviousness: She remains completely unaware of the near-death experiences her child gets into.
- Playful Cat Smile: She has one in her MV Edition portrait.
- Unnamed Parent: As the Player's mother, she is naturally referred to only as "Mom".
A gravedigger and resident of the town that the protagonist meets on Day 2.
- Ambiguously Brown: He's dark-skinned but has no confirmed ethnicity. What makes it more ambiguous is that it's just the appearance he takes on when posing as a human. His One-Winged Angel form looks like the standard Big Red Devil.
- Big Bad
- Creepy Mortician: Seemingly Averted, at first. Despite his job, he's actually rather nice and jokes around from time to time. This gets subverted and played straight later on when he is revealed to be Mephistopheles and the main antagonist of the game.
- Devil in Disguise: He takes on the role of a friendly gravedigger, but he's actually Mephistopheles and the Big Bad of the game.
- Evil All Along
- Evil Makeover: He gains white hair, red eyes, and a pair of wings after he reveals himself to be evil.
- Flat Character: Doesn't really have much of a character or do anything of note before being revealed as a villain.
- Meaningful Name: His name is an abbreviation of Mephistopheles.
- Obviously Evil: His original portrait, as shown above. The Cheshire Cat Grin, eyebrows, and mustache certainly don't do him any favors. His MV Edition portrait tones down his mischievous look significantly.
- Walking Spoiler: There's not much that can be said about him other than the fact that he's the Big Bad.
A powerful sorcerer that protects Creelles Town.
- Ambiguous Situation: Despite being the protector of the town and a major player in defeating the creepypastas, he dissappears in the bad ending with no explanation. Ben allegedly killed everyone in the town, but Bloo-Dee is an angel so it's not entirely clear if he even can die.
- God Was My Co-Pilot: He's revealed to actually be an angel.
- In-Series Nickname: He's usually just called Dee.
- Mystical White Hair
- Punny Name: Bloo-Dee. Like...bloody. Get it?
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: Subverted. His name may be a pun of "bloody" he may have blood red eyes, and did tell the Player to watch out or "the insanity will eat your soul", but Dee is arguably the most heroic character in the game.
A skilled sorceress and the cousin of Sally. The Player and Ben meet Samira in the forest on Day 2 and she warns them of the danger that lies within. After ignoring her warning, they are chased by Slenderman and she lets them stay in her house for the night.
- Ambiguous Situation: It's not really explained why Samira lives alone in the woods instead of in the theater with Sally if she's Sally's caregiver. Especially since she can protect Sally from the creepypastas with her mask and sorcery.
- Bare Midriffs Are Feminine: Her original sprite had her in a very revealing outfit with her midriff exposed.
- Cool Mask: In the original version she wears a masquerade mask. Her redesign gives her kitsune mask.
- Hiding Behind Your Bangs: In her MV Edition portrait, she has bangs covering one eye to accentuate her mysterious nature.
- Mask of Power: Her mask grants her protection from the creepypastas.
- Ms. Fanservice: The creator intended for her to be this. When Samira takes off her mask, Ben is enamored with her and says that she looks just like Sally, but more beautiful.
- Killed Offscreen: She was presumably killed by Ben, along with everyone else, in the bad ending, but we don't see her corpse.
- Promotion to Parent: Samira became Sally's caregiver after she was abandoned by her parents. The trope still functions the same despite her being Sally's older cousin, not sibling.
- Solitary Sorceress: She lives alone in a wooden cabin in the forest.
- Stripperiffic: She has a highly revealing sprite in the original game. Her redesign significantly lessens this aspect.
- Uncanny Family Resemblance: Barring her red hair, Samira looks pretty much identical to Sally.
- Youthful Freckles: Like Sally, she has these as well.
