This thread is for tropers who have trouble with English and would like some help with the crazy grammar of this crazy language.

Write down what you wish to edit on the wiki. If you have been suspended from editing, another troper might be kind enough to edit for you after your suggestions have been corrected.

The thread is for help and feedback on your own suggested edits.

If you want help correcting other people's edits (e.g., if you find a page which seems to have grammar problems but want a second opinion, or you don't feel able to fix it by yourself) then that's off-topic here, but we have a separate Grammar Police cleanup thread that can provide assistance.

I want to find that trope, but I'm currently suspended, so I can't search for it. Perhaps can you search it on my behalf? I will really thank you.

^ I'm sorry, but it is generally forbidden for any troper to make a post for a suspended troper. If I were to do so, I would be suspended too.

^ The only exception is this thread, but it's only for posting edits that have had their spelling corrected.

Okay, I just saw the Character Tag entry. Let's try this again.

Animaniacs 2020 Episode 22

@Mouse Madness

  • Eldritch Abomination: Brain ends up in an alternate timeline where he's taken over the world. Unknown to him, in this timeline Pinky is an interdimensional tentacled horror. Startled by his appearance, Brain drops the time traveling remote. Demon Pinky grabs it and Brain and is about to eat them just as time portals appear. Demon Pinky tells Brain "The void can't hold me!" as he's sucked into one. At the end of the episode, a brief appearance of the Demon bulging out of Pinky's head for a second shows he meant it.

Man of Medan

  • Extremely Short Timespan: Aside from the 1947 prologue, the story takes place within 24 hours. The bulk of the game's time is from the moment Olson's crew hijacks the Duke of Milan at 11 pm up to the next morning.
  • Stealth Pun: "Cut of your Jib," which refers to one of Brad's potential deaths, references the jib, the forward triangular sail, along with someone liking the cut of your jib.

@ Young Justice

  • While Slobo might be The Scrappy to many, his introduction is hilarious. Just when it looks like everyone has been successfully re-aged, Slobo appears on his bike, ranting about finding whoever it is that turned the "main man" into the "Top tot."
  • Cissie's angry rant about how her former teammates picked her to be on a baseball team deciding the fate of the world due to pure nostalgia rather than getting someone who still wants to be a hero and has actual superpowers.
  • Conner refuses to join Bart on patrol so he can watch a cheerleading tournament that his favorite actress and Lust Object is at. Bart then proceeds to get into a series of humorous Unwanted Rescues (e.g., he sees a Mustache Twirling Villain tying a Damsel in Distress to Railroad Tracks of Doom and overpowers the guy, only to realize that it's a silent film tribute festival). Then, he finds a real hostage situation...at the cheerleading competition. Bart defeats the bad guys, and the cheerleaders and actresses all swoon over him as a jealous Conner watches on TV.
@ Intimate Telecommunications
  • Crime Spree: A mob boss who is bound and gagged by burglars manages to dial one of his enforcers to rescue him. The man mistakes his muffled exclamations for sex noises that a woman is making and starts to masturbate before making out enough words to figure out who’s really calling him.
@ The Rock
  • The Bait-and-Switch moment when Major Baxter seems to join the mutiny against Hummel, only to turn and start shooting at the mutineers.
@ The McKenzie Break New Page

The Mc Kenzie Break is a 1970 World War II movie about an Allied intelligence officer who discovers that the inhabitants of a German POW camp are planning a mass escape. He plans to capture the submarine that will pick up the escapees, only to run into complications when he underestimates the ruthlessness and resourcefulness of the plot's mastermind. The film is based on a 1968 novel, The Bowmanville Break, which shed its original title for reprintings due to the success of the movie. Both are Based on a True Story but take some historical liberties, especially with the climax (the film moreso than the book).

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Alternate Ending: In the book, the escape tunnel collapses prematurely, and only one Nazi escapes (plus the two who escaped earlier to do advance work). When they make it to the coast where two U-boats are waiting, they are captured immediately, and nearby Allied ships and planes sink one of the U-boats while the other narrowly escapes. In the film, there is only one U-boat, which escapes, but O'Connor forces it to abandon Schluter and three others by strafing the area from a plane.
  • Adaptation Distillation: Less attention is paid to the intricacies behind the escape of Schmidt and Hochbaeur (who set things up outside to facilitate the upcoming mass escape) than in the book.
  • Adaptational Karma: In the book (where he has far less blood on his hands), Willi remains in the camp, and there is no way to prove his involvement in the plot. In the film he does escape, but is recaptured after having done enough that he will likely be executed by one side or the other, due to killing many of his own fellow POWs.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: Pariah Prisoner Berger is a suspected homosexual, while his book counterpart is an accused defeatist and enemy sympathizer.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Schluter's book counterpart is willing to cruelly order the deaths of fellow prisoners, but he's far less enthusiastic about it and has a far lower bodycount than his film counterpart, who kills many people personally. The last act of the book also reveals that he is contemptuous of Hitler, while the film indicates that he is a diehard Nazi.
  • Battle of Wits: The story centers on the Nazi prisoners each trying to stay one step ahead of O'Connor and Colonel Perry throughout the escape plot (smuggling coded messages, figuring out ways to get around the discovery of the tunnel etc.). They start to fail around the halfway point in the book, but do better in the movie.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The murderous, Politically Incorrect Villain Schluter is captured before he can make his final escape and faces possible execution for his crimes, but most of his fellow Nazis get away and the operation fails to capture the German spies in Canada or sink the submarine that was picking him up, both of which may torpedo O'Connor's career.
O'Connor: Willi, looks like we're both in the shit house.
  • Great Escape: 28 U-boat officers plan to escape from captivity and flee back to Nazi Germany.
  • Polite Villains, Rude Heroes: Conniving Nazi Willi Schluter is a Faux Affably Evil professional military man, while his opponent O'Connor is a gruff, boorish alcoholic.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • In the film, Schluter kills dozens of fellow prisoners by collapsing a barracks. In the book, no such incident occurs.
    • In the film, a potential German informer is murdered, but in the book, he survives and provides information to his captors.
    • In the film, Schluter's predecessor as senior POW officer (an Africa Korps general) died mysteriously after cooperating with the guards in some minor ways. In the book, he's merely transferred to another camp.
  • Inter-Service Rivalry: The Luftwaffe fliers and U-boat men in the camp don't get along well (although the fliers help keep the escape plan a secret). Schluter refuses to let any of the airmen escape out the tunnel and thinks little of killing several of them to provide a distraction.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain:
    • In the film, several of the Nazis display homophobic sentiment on multiple occasions.
    • In the book, two Nazi escapees display anti-Semitic distaste about being served by a Jewish diner employee.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Colonel Perry doesn't get along well with Captain O'Connor and he makes some bad decision, but he's able to logically explain why he makes those decisions and does help O'Connor at times. Furthermore, in the film but not the book, Perry is absolutely right when it comes to his biggest argument with O'Connor (whether or not to stop the prisoners before they escape, regardless of the intelligence loss), and O'Connor eventually admits it.
  • Sickbed Slaying: The prisoners kill Berger, who O'Connor is questioning about the escape plan, while he's in the hospital.
@ Cheating Death: Those That Lived
  • Creature-Hunter Organization: Played for Laughs when President Orion has to bribe Dollar to tell a lie about her arena, and her price is that he establish a zombie-fighting branch of the Peacekeepers even though there aren't any actual zombies outside of Dollar's arena.
  • Disability Immunity: Teff's deafness keeps her from being hypnotized and lured to her death by the song of a siren mutation.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: There is one instance of a tribute besides a victor surviving and escaping, when an avvox he befriends goes into the arena disguised as him while the tribute escapes.
  • The Prankster: One of the first things Rhyder does after his victory is putting a bucket of water on top of Snow's office door.
  • Shoe Slap: Taken Up To Eleven for Black Comedy. Pasture beats half the tributes in her arena to death using her shoes as blunt instruments.
  • Trampled Underfoot: A weaponized version occurs when Stallion kills his opponents by knocking them down and running over their chests, crushing their vital organs.
  • Trap Master: Crazy Survivalist Dollar rigs her train cabin with lots of snares and other traps.
  • Wins by Doing Absolutely Nothing:
    • Plinny sleeps through training and most of the games, and her one kill is a Mercy Kill. When the trumpets sound for her victory, she's utterly shocked and confused. The Capitol audiences loathe her, but there's nothing they can do about it.
    • Downplayed with Chassis. He does knife a Career tribute during a fight at the Cornucopia, but he wins by making a Dismissive Kick that accidentally destroys a support beam (the arena is a giant mine) and causes a cave-in that kills everyone but him.

^ @Minorica

The infamously trending manga and anime Dog Nigga is about the titular Half-Human Hybrid, <- comma who was born after a drunken old man rapes a female dog and it died...So The half-dog...rejected by the society.

^ Deleted "infamously trending" because it (a) doesn't have anything to do with the trope and (b) violates Complaining About Shows You Don't Like and How to Write an Example - Don't Comment on a Work's Popularity (or Lack Thereof).

^ In the first sentence, the verbs "was", "rapes" and "died" have conflicting tenses. If they occurred in the work's Backstory (before the work begins), they should be past tense. If they are shown in the work, they should be present tense. This is as per How to Write an Example - Write in Historical Present Tense.

  • Gory Discretion Shot: In "Flooded," Olson slams his hammer down on Conrad's head if Alex in Shared Play or Curator's Cut doesn't pull the door switch to squish him in time. After Olson kills Conrad and runs off, his body is only shown from the head down.

@Julia

@ Cheating Death: Those That Lived

  • Attention Whore: Tabbock, District 9's last victor, relishes the spotlight. This is most evident in his magic show and how he directly addresses the audience during his Games. He even enjoys being publicly whipped as a child for misbehaving, because it means people are watching him.
  • Break the Haughty: Chaff starts out as a aloof perfectionist and Teacher's Pet (although he has some Pet the Dog moments early on, like freeing the bugs at the edible insects station). He drives everyone crazy by doing things like being a Grammar Nazi to President Snow, lecturing his District partner for not using silverware, lecturing the training center staff for leaving a single piece of trash on the ground, and complaining about his training score. One Hunger Games later, and Chaff is a jaded alcoholic and new rebel recruit.
  • Friend to All Children: Mercy Gregor of District 2 is very affectionate to younger kids and loves spending time with them. Consequently, she's devastated to be sent into a games where twenty twelve-year-olds are deliberately selected as tributes. This gives her a Heel Realization and causes her to try and protect the twelve-year-olds in the arena and avoid killing anyone. She narrowly fails in both respects, and ends up caring for orphans later in life.
  • Girl Posse: Three popular girls in District 9 trick a disfigured classmate into volunteering for the Hunger Games by acting like they're all going to raise their hands to, and find the whole thing hilarious.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Augustus Braun starts out as a cocky, selfish, and unrepentant Career tribute who killed a 12-year-old in the arena. After eight years of mentoring, he's disillusioned and broken by the deaths of his tributes, the 3rd Quarter Quell twist, and gradual feelings of empathy for his fellow mentors and their tributes. The Second Rebellion catches him completely off guard, but as the rebel mentors run for it and plan to fight the Capitol, Augustus asks to come with them.
  • Human Shield: While fleeing from the Capitol during the Rebellion, Ron ties loyalist victor Anchor to his back as a human shield, with Anchor being hit by dozens of shots that were meant for Ron.
  • Hunter of Monsters: Skinner Alceto spends his life hunting dangerous mutations that threaten the people of District 10, and enjoys both the thrill of the hunt and the sense of satisfaction in keeping District 10 safe. He kills tens of thousands of Mutts during his lifetime, many of them in the 69th Hunger Games. He largely avoids fighting and killing his fellow tributes in both his original games and the 3rd Quarter Quell. In the later arena, he's actually delighted to be pitted against a grotesque Mutt that's considered to be invincible, and which he wounded but failed to kill during the 69th Hunger Games.
Skinner: If this is how it has to end...If this is the final hunt I'll be taking part in...I can't think of a better conclusion to it all, old friend.
  • Hunter Trapper: Lammy and her dad hunt and trap to feed themselves and make money before she's reaped for the 40th Hunger Games, and she wins using Trap Master strategies.
  • Imaginary Friend: Arendellian Spinner III is schizophrenic and has long, heartfelt conversations with her nonexistent friend, Aaron.
  • Literal-Minded: Woof Casino has a learning disorder that makes him feel unable to act without receiving orders. Once he gets orders, though, he takes them to the extreme. He volunteers when his disabled younger brother is reaped, not so much out of love and affection, but because he interprets the pleas to "save me" as a command. When his mentor orders him to "learn everything," he goes to every training station in the gymnasium, picking up the skills to earn a training score of 11. This takes a darker turn when his last opponent in the arena mutters, "Aw, fuck me." Then, after his victory, Duke Saint Rose tells Woof to "Stop obeying everybody's damn orders" and he does that without a second's pause.
  • Mistaken for Badass:
    • When Arendellian III is forced to wear a straight jacket in the arena, Dragon thinks that she's deliberately and willingly trying to win the Games without using her hands and praises her as the ultimate badass.
    • Chaff's Fearless Fool, Neat Freak tendencies make him clean up the blood in an area where a tribute died. Everyone who sees him leaves him alone due to feeling he can't possibly be that stupid and must have a cunning trap nearby.
  • Mutual Kill:
    • Logger's erstwhile allies and last two opponents, the female Career tributes from Districts 1 and 2, stab each other through the heart as they fight while Logger lies wounded nearby.
    • During the 75th Hunger Games, Skinner Alceto and the mutt known as "The Beast" kill each other.
  • One-Steve Limit: Chaff is selected as tribute by mistake. There are five Chaff Mitchells of reaping age in District 11, but he's the first to step forward and isn't permitted to protest when he notices the others making themselves scarce. To add insult to injury, it turns out that the name on the reaping slip was really Chuff Mitchell, and the escort read it wrong.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Boulder Atherston might be the shortest Career tribute in history, but he's nowhere near the weakest.
  • Prone to Tears: Crimson Flanders spends most of her time crying after winning the 29th Hunger Games. Very few people know the story behind this, namely that she is the first victim of the victor Sex Slave system.
  • Run or Die: Dollar has this reaction to seeing Claudia inject herself with the G virus in the zombie arena. She does face the mutation that used to be Claudia later on, but only after getting a really powerful weapon
Dollar: She just injected herself with the G Virus! Attacking is futile right now, run for your life!
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: Dirty Coward Barlow emits "the most high pitched scream in the past eight years of the Games" while fleeing from the bloodbath.
  • Sticky Fingers: Jack Tylos revels in being a "master thief." His skills range from picking pockets to robbing banks, and he's never caught after reaching adulthood. It starts as a way for him to keep himself fed on the streets of District 7, and then to win the Hunger Games when he smuggles a stolen taser into the arena. Later in life, he hides stolen weapons around victor hangouts for them to use against the Capitol when the Rebellion comes. When one of the children of his fellow victor Snag is reaped, the largest bank in the Capitol is robbed by a mysterious figure who makes a clean getaway, with Snag realizing that Jack did it to get sponsor money for his daughter.
  • Victory by Endurance: Seeder wins by running for about an hour until the two Career tributes chasing her both get their wounds infected from all of the dirt in the arena and die while Seeder lies a few feet away from one of them, too tired to move.
  • Wham Line:
    • In the 17th Hunger Games, Career tribute Rook Valiant takes some supplies, wanders away from his pack, and walks toward the girl from District 3. His mentor, Olga, thinks he's about to make a kill, only to get a very rude awakening about just how much her tribute cares for the Career Alliance, as he made a secret alliance with that girl.
Rook: I got the stuff. They suspect nothing. Any wounds at all?
    • When Gwenith Rosebud is tricked into volunteering for the 13th Hunger Games and freaks out, most people stare at her awkwardly, but one person, her mentor, feels something very different, something that makes him put all of his effort into saving her.
He stares in wonder because she just saved his sister from being thrown into the arena.
  • Wins by Doing Absolutely Nothing: Cupid, the victor of the Capitol Games, doesn't kill or injure a single other tribute. He wins by dodging when his last opponent lunges at him, and the guy ends up Impaled with Extreme Prejudice, completely by accident.

The Prisoner's Dilemma

  • Acoustic License: Brain tries to accuse Phoenicia Leatherpants of offing her fellow supervillains while her plane is idling. She can't hear his accusation over the propeller, averting this trope.

[up] @The Walking Dude

"...do I just keep providing examples until I think my writing skills are up to snuff then head back over to the Edit Ban thread and to and prove it?"

^ If you can repeatedly post examples which are proofread and determined to have no errors, then you can go back and ask.

Owing to their nature as spawn of the Hot Black Flame, devils are...

^ According to the Kill Six Billion Demons Throne character page and the work page (Kill Six Billion Demons), "devils" is a common noun and is therefore not capitalized.
