Trolls Band Together:

  • The Atoner:
    • Branch's brothers seem to have become this towards the end of the film, as they intend to atone for their actions in leaving Branch and not being there for him growing up.
      • John Dory, Bruce and Clay have become this trope the most, especially when they realize the damage their selfish actions has caused to Branch and Floyd, as they intend to make it up to their youngest siblings and improve their relationship with them.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Floyd has no idea about Branch's rough life and that he grew up alone with no family to take care of him.

Thanks Arivne, though I'm noticing you changed the "the book was released in" to "the book was released on" but when I posted my pages for the Anna and Marcus books that said "the series was started in" you didn't object them.

I have never really understood when I had to use "on" or "in", does it have something to do with one being singular and the other being plural?

@ Monsters Anonymous

  • The Superior Foes Of Spiderman features Villains Anonymous, where various metahuman crooks (and the occasional Badass Normal) gather to talk about the problems in their lives and disillusionment they feel with villainy (although many go on being villains after the meetings).
  • Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat: The vampire living in Monster Town Purgatory live on artificial blood to atone for their dark pasts. The rare instances someone wants to drink real blood or kills a human for non-feeding purposes lead to a quick intervention where the culprit gets a You Are Better Than You Think You Are appeal or is kindly but firmly locked up for a while.
  • The eponymous characters in the Harry Turtledove story "The Gentleman of the Shade" are the vampires of Victorian London, who only drink nonfatal amounts of blood, hang around their gentleman's club, engaging in harmless hobbies like card games, and, on the rare occasions a new vampire shows up in town),talk about how to recruit them.
  • The Hypnotists: The Sandman's Guild is made up of people with mind control powers who have sworn off using their psychic abilities for selfish gain and offer each other understanding and support in that regard.

@ Cold Case

  • Dr. Thayer from "The Boy in the Box" (which features an Accidental Murder by a remorseful killer) has zero remorse for using orphaned children as Unwitting Test Subjects in his radiation experiments (which sterilized some of them and may have contributed to the deaths of others.
  • The mill owner in "Kensington" never breaks any laws and is quite polite while onscreen, while most of his employees end up committing crimes or being bitter toward each other. However, the reason that the employees are acting that way is because their boss sold the mill rather than operate it at a lower profit and wait for better times, leaving the entire neighborhood in poverty while he lined his pockets. What really makes him infuriating is that he lied to his entire workforce about keeping the mill open after signing the paperwork to close the business, setting them all up for a devastating and unexpected fall.
  • "Stealing Home" and "Frank's Best" both have killers who are hardly unrepentant (although the latter one is a lot less creepy in general than the other) and likely inspire less contempt than the guest characters from those episodes who help desperate immigrants into America, but only when they think they can exploit them in one or way or another.
  • Ronde, the record producer from "Soul", is less sympathetic than the A Tragedy of Impulsiveness killer, even under the most charitable reading of his character. He works his employees a lot harder than he has any right to, considering that he also underpays them, gives them little respect, steals Billy's glory after initially dismissing his ideas (although he has seemingly accomplished a lot on his own since parting ways with Billy), possibly sleeps with his secretaries (although he denies it and that may have been mere gossip) and repeatedly ruins Chandra's chances to work on the record due to feeling that attractiveness matters more than skill for female singers.
  • The Red Scare-embodying cops and bigoted principal in "Red Glare" spread pitiless misery with every second they are onscreen, while the killer at least started out with good intentions.

@ Cold Case S 1 E 7 A Time To Hate

  • Commonality Connection: Anthony, the gay bar bartender, was Only in It for the Money and is willing to drop gay slurs about most of his former customers in the present day, but says he genuinely got along with Daniel due to their shared interest in baseball.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: The Terrible Trio of homophobic bullies was constantly egged on by the ringleader's mother, who never appears in person.
  • Retired Monster: The head of the homophobic bullies is still homophobic and uneager to accept responsibility for his actions in the present day, but is a blue-collar worker who doesn't seem to be an active gay basher anymore and says his kids would be upset to learn about his past.
  • The Un-Reveal: Why the Dirty Cops raided the gay bar they had been accepting money to leave alone in the lead-up to the murder and who sent the cops a note saying to talk to Tinkerbell (and exactly what they hoped she would tell the cops) are never confirmed.

@ Cold Case

  • In "Sanctuary," Badass Preacher Father Peralta marches right up to the front door of a dangerous drug lord to bring a sanctuary-seeking unwilling drug mule back to his church when she feels threatened by the dealer.

@ Retired Monster

  • Many Cold Case killers or criminal suspects are a lot less dangerous and/or actively malicious in the years after the murders while not striving to atone for any misdeeds they did (among the more plot-relevant examples; Gang Banger JT Simms from "The Badlands" is a pool hall denizen in a wheelchair, sinister ex-prisoner guard Mike Jaden from "The House" spends most of his time hanging around his bar or shooting clay pigeons, Neo-Nazi Lindsay from "Spiders" is a bitter Struggling Single Mother to three kids with ADD, the main homophobic bully from "A Time to Hate" is a mechanic who mentions having more liberal kids, Cocnentration camp guard Anton from "The Hen House" is a reclusive painter, Sharon "Blondie" Lertola from "November 22nd" is a waitress who is nostalgic about the days she helped her pool hustler boyfriend, Repulsive Ringmaster Biggie from "Metamorphosis" is living in a trailer park, a Serial Killer in season seven spent decades as a Happily Married businessman after getting through his original list of targets, etc.)

@ Retired Outlaw

  • Cold Case: Many Cold Case guest characters who were criminals during the events leading up to the murder are honest citizens in the years afterward. Drug dealer Mason Tucker from "The Runner" runs a Jaguar dealership, The Mole for the bank robbery crew in "Dog Day Afternoons" is now the bank manager, former drug mule Ceci from "Sanctuary" is a housekeeper, stickup man Pete Doyle from "Bad Reputation" went to work as a janitor before being the Victim of the Week, Honey Trap hustler Sharon from "November 22nd" is a waitress, former thief and addict Cal from "Hoodrats" is a construction worker, graffiti-obsessed gang leader King Tut from "Bombers" has moved on to painting cars, Gang Banger Zen from "Read Between the Lines" is a bus driver who covered his old gang tattoo with one of his wife and daughter, etc. Some have elements of The Atoner (if they committed the murder or contributed to its chain of events and guilt drove their later lifestyle choices), a Retired Monster (if they did any of those things but are implied to have changed lifestyles more out of convenience or necessity than remorse), or a Falsely Reformed Villain (like King Tut, who maintains his old lifestyle in secret).

Roman Reigns

Designated Hero

  • He has also been involved in numerous Face vs. Face matches during this period, emerging victorious against the likes of John Cena and Daniel Bryan, who are the company's top babyfaces. While Face vs. Face matches typically revolve around a championship, for Roman, it is more about establishing himself as the superior wrestler. This has led to Roman being perceived as much of a Hero Killer as a heel. However, his most controversial moment came when he supposedly ended the Undertaker's career at WrestleMania XXXIII. In contrast to other career-ending matches such as Shawn Michaels vs. Ric Flair at WrestleMania XXIV and Michaels vs. Taker at WrestleMania XXVI, both matches are highly emotional with HBK shedding tears after delivering the final blow to Flair in the former match and sharing a hug with Taker despite his loss in the latter. In the case of Roman and Taker's match, it is seen as a younger man bullying an older man on the brink of retirement, then boasting about defeating a beloved legend and tarnishing his legacy, similar to when Baron Corbin retires Kurt Angle two years later. Although Undertaker eventually returns to the ring and continues to compete for another four years, it is understandable why fans may struggle to view him as a hero after that particular match.

  • Heroic Build: Homelander is an exception example. From the outside, it looks like he is very buff and well-build. But in season 3 is revealed that he is of average build and his costume is full of pads mimicking muscles. This puts him in direct contrast with the Deep and Soldier Boy for example who are both buff.
  • The Face: He is very eager to let Stormfront know he is the Face of the Seven, not her.
  • You Are Fat: In Season 3, he "nicely" lets A-train to know that he is cramming in "as much fat fuck as possible", making the Seven look bad.

got message about these 3 examples, any help? please?

YMMV.The Legend Of Zelda Tears Of The Kingdom:

  • Contested Sequel: While nobody considers the game to be bad, opinions are divided over whether or not the game is a good sequel to Breath of the Wild. Some fans regard it to be an Even Better Sequel due to the addition of the sky islands and the depths, the dungeons being more varied than the divine beasts, the new abilities adding a lot of new options, and the inclusion of Ganondorf, amongst other things. Others, however, found it to be a lazy rehash of Breath of the Wild that offers little new to Hyrule, fails to fix that game's issues (at best, only putting a band-aid on them), and has a more disappointing and lackluster story by comparison. Given that Breath of the Wild was one of the most acclaimed games of 2017, this was inevitable

  • Fanfic Fuel: Despite Ganondorf presumably being the source of Calamity Ganon, the game doesn't delve into their connection or even really acknowledge it, which has led to many fan theories speculating on that connection, with the most popular being that Calamity Ganon is a fake Ganon made out of Malice, not too dissimilar to the various Phantom Ganons and Puppet Ganon from The Wind Waker.

VideoGame. The Legend Of Zelda Tears Of The Kingdom:

  • Ambiguous Situation: While Ganondorf is presumably the source of Calamity Ganon from Breath of the Wild, the game's story keeps the connection between them completely ambiguous and treats Ganondorf as an almost completely different entity from Calamity Ganon, making it unclear just what Calamity Ganon is, where he came from, and how he is related to Ganondorf.

Trivia.Batman Beyond:

  • Flip-Flop of God: The show's canon status has been subject to this. In a 2001 interview, Bruce Timm says that the show and Return of the Joker are only set in a "possible future" and are not the DCAU's definitive future. However, this stance would later be contradicted by Justice League, which establishes Beyond as the canonical future of the DCAU.

YMMV.Puyo Puyo:

  • Fandom Rivalry: One has kickstarted with the Like a Dragon fandom. Largely thanks to Like A Dragon fans not being all that fond of the games (with the game considered to be That One Side Quest in Judgment and Yakuza 6: The Song of Life) and some unfortunate remarks from former producer Toshihiro Nagoshi during a stream that seemingly mock the Japanese e-sports fanbase (even though he and Sega have since apologized for them). Puyo Puyo fans have also shown grievance over how Sega of America seemingly favors Like A Dragon and how quick they were to localize every game in the Like A Dragon series once it began to show signs of success, while continuing to ignore Puyo Puyo outside of localizing the new games.

CommonKnowledge.Puyo Puyo:

  • The artist behind the character designs in Puyo Puyo Fever is often mistaken to be Sonic the Hedgehog artist Yuji Uekawa, largely because of the similarly exaggerated proportions and the game being developed by Sonic Team. However, the designs are actually the work of Takenami Hideyuki. Yuji Uekawa did work on the game as the game's art director.

What you wrote ("The series was started in February 11th, 2020") should have been "started on February 11th, 2020."

Whether you use "in" or "on" depends on how specific the time period is.

You use "on" if it's a specific day. You use "at" if it's a specific time ("I arrived at 10:00 p.m. on February 11th").

You use "in" if it's more general, e.g. "I arrived in February".

Also, if you're going to make a reference to something on TV Tropes from a while ago (your post for the Anna and Marcus books was on April 4th, more than two weeks ago), would you please add a link to it so I don't have to search through multiple pages to find it?

Thanks, Arivne (though I should point out that I was not referring to exports, but e-sports).

YMMV.Puyo Puyo Fever:

  • Complacent Gaming Syndrome: According to producer Yuji Naka in one interview, most returning Japanese players only played as Arle and didn't bother to play as any of the new characters, much to his disappointment. This largely stems from the new cast being hated at the time, and Arle providing the closest to the series' traditional gameplay by only having the two-piece Puyo.

  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: The new cast was initially despised by Japanese fans for replacing most of the Compile cast, to the point that Sega would demote most of them while bringing back most of the Compile cast in subsequent entries as a way of Pandering to the Base, and while opinions on them have since softened, even now, most Japanese fans still prefer the Compile cast. Western fans, however, are far more fond of them, as they don't have the same level of attachment and familiarity with the Compile-era cast due to the series' history of No Export for You, with Fever being their first exposure to the series, meaning, unlike the Japanese fandom, they were able to approach Fever's cast without any preconceived biases and enjoy them on their own merits.

@ Cold Case

  • In one of the 1950s flashback scenes in "A Time to Hate", when a Gang of Bullies dump their Chinese food on a gay couple, one of the men, Daniel, noodles still dripping off him, marches up to the nearest beat cop to file a harassment complaint, something both his boyfriend and the cop remain impressed by decades later.

Cold Case S 2 E 7 Its Raining Men

  • Only Bad Guys Call Their Lawyers: The second Paul realizes the detectives have figured out his guilt, he tells his secretary to call his lawyer. However, his longtime subconscious desire to confess what happened gets the better of him, and he changes his mind once his lawyer is actually on the line.

@ Cold Case

  • In "It's Raining Men," Paul Kerns constantly displays sadness and bitterness about the homophobia his brother faced, especially from their own father, and has done a lot to honor his memory. This goes beyond simple brotherly love with the reveal that Paul is either gay or bisexual himself, giving him an extra reason to empathize with Jeff and resent their father and society's homophobic attitudes. Also, he's trying to atone for being the killer.

@ Every Other Day

Every Other Day is a 2012 teen Urban Fantasy novel narrated by Kali, a teenager who lives in The Unmasqued World and has powers that let her fight the world's many monsters. However, those powers only work every other day, and on an off-day, she finds herself in a Race Against the Clock to save a classmate from a deadly curse, only to wind up in danger from both human and unusually deadly supernatural forces herself.

Tropes:

  • Alternate History: Charles Darwin discovered supernatural creatures during his studies, and as a result, the last two hundred years have been mostly the same except for how people know about dangerous monsters, use them in various wars, study them in school, and put them on the endangered species list.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Unmasqued World of dangerous monsters or not, nothing will get Elliot to accept that his sister Skylar is psychic.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: The three main female characters are brunette (Kali), blonde (Skylar), and red-haired (Bethany), respectively.
  • Designer Baby: Kali's powers come from experiments her scientist parents did to alter the human genome as they conceived her (although it was more of an abstract theory they didn't expect to work).
  • Disposable Vagrant: Monsters tend to be drawn to weak people with rotten sores and lots of grime or chemicals in their bloodstream, meaning they largely feed on poor people whom society doesn't feel obliged to protect.
  • Eating Optional: Kali's powers don't keep her from being able to eat, but she doesn't have to, so she rarely does.
  • Hunter of Monsters: When her powers are working, Kali goes out to fight dangerous beasts like hellhounds, dragons, and chupacabra, not as much out of a sense of duty, but because she feels physically compelled to, while her blood gives off a scent that makes them attack her as well. During the main events of the book, she finds herself forced to do this while her powers aren't working.
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: Bethany is a snooty cheerleader who will occasionally engage in some Slut-Shaming, but when Kali saves her life at the cost of being endangered herself, Bethany insists on helping her for the rest of the book and gradually becomes nicer in other ways.
  • Parental Favoritism: Bethany's father has spent years trying to wake up her brother from a coma, blames Bethany for not watching him enough when he got hurt, and is willing to sacrifice her life to get a cure for his son.
  • Motor Mouth: It takes Skylar about five seconds to say sixty words and she has little filter about speaking about anything that comes to mind.

@ Thunderheart

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Jimmy Look Twice's intense attitude, ambiguous shapeshifting abilities, and unambiguous acrobatic abilities make him one of the most remembered characters in the movie despite how few scenes he has.

@ Buffy the Vampire Slayer

  • Given how certain events in the movie and the novel EU explicitly aren't canon to the show (which is also true of the Angel novels), some fans like to think the inverse is true and that movie Buffy and the Scooby and Angels gangs in the various novel alternate continuities aren't destined to go through all of the same heartbreak and trauma as the TV characters.

@ Jedi Apprentice

  • The Chessmaster: In addition to masterminding various acts of industrial sabotage that won't hurt anyone but will make people take notice, he knows Obi-Wan is a Jedi who has infiltrated his group but hides this fact to try to win him over. However, his inability to prevent or counter dissent in his group ends up complicating his plans.
