YMMV.The Crystal Gems Say Be Anti Racist: Fans as a whole seem very divisive about these shorts. Part of the fanbase finds them too heavy-handed to be showing to children, while another part criticizes that they aren't explicit enough. In particular the Pearl short, which they argue doesn't go into enough detail with the other black historical figures Pearl mentions. And ironically enough, people supportive of Garnet's short claim people complaining about it are proving her short right.

I wanna know if these entries from YMMV.Dream are true, and the contents on why and how they're divisive:

  • The shipping of the Dream Team. Some argue that people shouldn't be shipping real-life people despite whatever chemistry they may have, while others don't see a problem with doing so. For the record, Dream & George themselves have stated that they don't mind it.
  • Reuploading clips of Dream's content has become one. In the wake of several channels reuploading clips of Dream (most infamously the "Dream [insert number here] IQ Compilation" videos or a fan-channel called "Dream's Mom" uploading stream highlights), fans have come to argue over whether or not they're within their right to. Some fans believe that so long as they're not monetizing the content it's alright, stating that said compilations are how they found Dream in the first place. Others believe that, monetized or not, it's still immoral to reupload content about someone else and potentially luring away viewers who'd otherwise go to Dream's channel. Not helping is that Dream himself, as well as TommyInnit, Tubbo, and Jschlatt, discussed such a topic on the SMP—and even they couldn't come to a general consensus. Though, for the record, Dream stated that he's of the "fine if not monetized" mindset and says that he likely wouldn't have uploaded his own stream highlights anyways. The group also decided that reuploading would be fine so long as something unique and original was done with the clips, something Tommy praises a creator known as Mugo for.

The debate over the ethics of Actor Shipping is a fairly universal one that is far from unique to Dream. Remove it.

Reuploading content is also a widespread debate, but the details around it and the Dream Team's opinions of it are more specific and nuanced and thus I think it's worth keeping in some form.

[up]Does the idea behind a Broken Base have to be unique to the fandom? Some fandoms are less intense about Actor Shipping that others, and the Dream fandom seems really intense about it, like "put your stances in your Twitter bio ASAP" intense.

[up][up][up]I've only heard weird anti-SJW Youtubers who already hate the show complain about those shorts. Most other fans seem to appreciate them. Also, is that the official title of the shorts? I don't think it is. (Especially because there were shorts about subjects besides racism in the same series a few years ago.)

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

Not unless it has some specific flavor to it that makes it distinct from all the other billion fandoms who have those same arguments. Perhaps there is, but based on the entry as written, it doesn't offer any particular details for why it's so acerbic within this fandom versus any other.

Some videos on Youtube highlight what and how ugly the stuff that comes forth from the less savory side of the fandom (more specifically around the sexualisation), which may have come/been driven from Dream expressing okayness with such stuff... and possibly him pandering (maybe pampering) to a part of the base... too much.

Like if you look up "Dream Stans" there'll be some videos on how nasty that section of the base can get.

So that's the element that describes the shipping between the Dream Team members.

EDIT: I don't know if there are other cases where said sexualisation issue has been as prominent as Dream, with the same circumstances as him (the creator okaying said fan content and such)

From YMMV.Bloons Tower Defense:

  • Broken Base: Comanche Commander in Bloons TD 6's popularity has been split between "okay with supports that can affect its Comanche entourage" and "avoid like the plague, Apache Prime is superior in every way". Part of the division is fueled by Comanche Defense, the stepping-stone tier 4 upgrade, being often reviled for its unreliability of the Comanche summons being tied to RBE and a long sitting-duck cooldown. Due to Comanche Defense's poor repuation, the Commander gets tarnished as well. Additionally, whenever a support buff was nerfed, both Commander and Defense (which relied on them for usefulness) were often hit four times as hard. On the other hand, a few buffs (like Gwendolin's Heat it up) still remain useful for assisting the summoned Comanches.

I don't think "is this unit okay or underpowered?" is an acceptable Broken Base example. MAYBE if one side viewed it as a Game-Breaker (and even then, probably not, since BTD is a mostly single-player game).

Found this on YMMV.Final Fantasy XII, because of the non-typical formatting and bashing nature, I decided to look into who added it and it turns out it was from ban evader burgerants/worldbeater so this is more of a formal check to see if there's anything worth bothering with before removing for being content from a ban evader

  • Broken Base:
    • Some will think this heretical, but XII was a refinement of what fans praised in X: a large, open world; a cast of likable people who all get decent amounts of screen time; a rehash of the Sphere Grid (a cleverly-designed linear path which takes the routine stat increases of levelling and makes you do it manually) which at least allows a little bit of customization. (This person will specialize in black magic, this person in white, etc.) Like X, however, some of the main characters let the side down:
      1. Vaan: Wants to be a sky pirate pretty much because he's a stock adventurer.
      2. Penelo: We know next to nothing about her or why she's tagging along.
      3. Basch: Was accused of killing Ashe's hubby. Joins the party to clear his name. Hasn't been expanded on since.
      4. Fran: Shunned by her people simply for leaving the woods where they live (?). Has a sensitivity to magic rocks.
      5. Ashe: Wants revenge for her husband's death and wants to reclaim her empire.
      6. Balthier: Dashing sky pirate. At least he has a reason (i.e. his father) for becoming one, or for joining the fight.
      7. Vayne: The main antagonist who seems to be well-intentioned but tyrannical. They seem to allude to Venat goading him into it, but he still comes across as unassuming 30 or so hours in, simply because they don't touch on it enough.

I... don't actually understand that entry at all. I can't identify what exactly the sides in the Broken Base are supposed to be beyond "is this game good or bad?", which is useless, and the follow-up to "some of the main characters let the side down" being listing all of the main characters is just bizarre. I'd cut it even if it wasn't the product of a ban evader.

TIL that the Broken Base section of YMMV.Scooby Doo And The Curse Of The13th Ghost first appeared when the movie was four months old; now that the movie is over a year old, how much of the section can stay?

  • Broken Base:
    • Word of God confirming that the movie canonically takes place after Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island has been taken as this. On one hand, it confirms there's a Shared Universe between the newer animated movies, the first four animated movies, and the pre-A Pup Named Scooby-Doo shows. Plus, most people can justify any continuity snarls with the idea of Hanna Barbera continuity and the floating timeline note  . On the other hand, it doesn't fit considering the number of Continuity Snarls it would entail, including the implication that the Gang returned to status quo despite the first four movies being about them as adults, and think that even with Hanna Barbera continuity, this is a stretch..
    • This film's writing of Velma also seems to have caused a split even more so than the info from Word of God intended. As it seems clear the film did aim to end with two scenarios in terms of explanations (even if the writer slipped in an open interpretation to one) but in reality obviously only one can still be accurate. But this has resulted in some fans just taking Velma as the annoying character who everyone else didn't share opinions with and the others now assuming through Velma WB has retconned the entirety of The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo into being All Just a Dream.
    • Scrappy being nowhere to be found in the film; was it a blessing in disguise or did the cast of characters feel incomplete without him?

[up][up][up] My knowledge of the game is limited to YouTube reviews and a few portions of a livestream, but I'll do my best with my limited knowledge.

General

  • Is this game an Even Better Sequel by taking a bold risk and improving on what made the predecessor so special while improving on the gameplay to make it feel fresh? Or is this game one of the biggest examples of video game Sequelitis, betraying everything that made the original special with a plot-hole ridden storyline and no coherence whatsoever? There is no middle ground for this debate. Contested Sequel, not BB. Cut.
    • Speaking of taking risks as mentioned above, was it successful or was it a failure? Pretty sure this isn't vicious or sustained enough to qualify. Cut.
  • Did the game really deserve all the praise from critics or did the critics exaggerate their praise while ignoring the flaws that should've been addressed critically? Detractors believe the latter so much that some actually assumed Naughty Dog bribed the mainstream gaming journalists into giving astoundingly high scores. Supporters, however, believe that the game absolutely deserved all the high praise coming from critics and it is a clear indication that they actually played the game and analyzed all the positives successfully. The people at the center, which are quite rare, actually agree with both sides and claim that opinions are subjective and that a critic's review naturally won't apply to everyone. Critical Dissonance, not BB. Cut.
  • The game's tone. While most agree that it's incredibly dark and oppressive, supporters believe that the tone is fitting and like that it took a more serious and realistic route, while detractors argue that the game became too dark to the point of causing Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy. Haven't played either game, but didn't the first one also have a dark tone? If so, fans should have a problem with the execution, not the dark tone's mere existence. Cut. However, the point about the tone's execution might be salvageable.
  • Is Ellie being LGBT shoehorned in order to pander to the currently trending LGBT inclusion in media, or was it a necessary step in the gaming department in order to celebrate diversity? Not helping this debate is that, currently, political agenda inclusion in media is extremely controversial. Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment. Cut.
  • Was an aesop about loss, vengeance, and mercy really needed for the sequel? People who defend this say that it was necessary considering that the first game was about love, so it should come full circle. In addition, they claimed that this also allowed Naughty Dog to take more risks with the storyline. Others believe that the theme of Roaring Rampage of Revenge was done so many times in other media that it's too generic, and that other video games and movies have done it way better. Further, is a theme of revenge really an appropriate choice for a story with two playable characters where the plotline is each character taking revenge on the other? Supporters argue that this is the point: Seeing both characters fleshed out supports the theme of how bad revenge is. Detractors argue that trying to humanize the target of a revenge story makes the player uninterested in the protagonist getting revenge. Pretty sure people didn't complain about the aesop's existence, just its Anvilicious execution—but I think its execution might be a valid entry. Cut "Further," and everything before it. Keep the rest.
  • Was the infected taking a backseat in the narrative necessary? Supporters claim that focusing on the infected was unnecessary as it would have put less focus on the theme of revenge and that it already has enough infected shown to the point that they really weren't taking a backseat. Detractors believe that a lot of opportunities for the infected could have been shown, as shown by the Rat King, and thought that the infected should've had more importance in order to learn more about them and expand on the lore. I lack the necessary knowledge to make a judgement on this.
  • The game sweeping the Game of the Year Awards and winning nine out of ten of the categories it was nominated in. Did it truly deserve the wins? The only thing that's certain is that it reignited the debates over the game for supporters and detractors alike. I think the Award Snub entry on the YMMV page covers the point sufficiently. Cut.
  • The deceptive nature of the trailers. While some accepted it was done to preserve the surprise, others felt it was extremely manipulative to the point of being borderline false advertising. I don't think bringing this up is likely to start a Flame War, which is one of the 4 criteria for Broken Base. Cut.
  • A praising and memetic review from Jeff Cannata on Twitter gained a lot of criticism for mentioning and comparing Schindler's List to The Last of Us Part II. The people who defend his tweet believe that he was trying to make a comparison in tone in general, which they found fitting, while the people who slammed his tweet stated that not only was it tone-deaf to compare a game to the Holocaust, but also that it doesn't really make sense because the game is more like an action game like John Wick (Also mentioned in his tweet) in the first place, where both protagonists have lost their loved ones and are going through a Roaring Rampage of Revenge. About someone who reviewed the game, not the game itself. Cut.

This much for now.

BrokenBase. The Last Of Us Part II: Round 2.

Gameplay

  • Has the gameplay advanced to the point that it feels fresh or is it too repetitive and boring due to bearing an extreme similarity to the first game? Not vicious enough. Cut.
  • Does the implementation of dogs actually enhance the game or does it actually hurt the game and make it extremely annoying? Not likely to start a huge debate or Flame War. Cut.
  • Is an enemy screaming their dead foe's name actually thought-provoking or is it another one of the hollow attempts to humanize the NPCs considering that they all look the same and are voiced by the same people? It might be possible to convince me that this is valid, but to my knowledge, the supporting faction isn't large or vocal enough. Cut.
  • Is Abby's arsenal more powerful to the point it actually makes Ellie's look pale in comparison, or is it actually balanced? Not vicious enough. Cut.
  • Does the gameplay contradict the theme of the game? Due to Ellie/Abby's option to kill everyone in the vicinity in such a gruesome and awesome way, gamers may forget about the consequences of killing due to being desensitized from all the violence. In addition, considering that Ellie gets literally no consequences whatsoever from killing all the NPC's, many people thought that the gameplay felt like an afterthought and that the potential risk they had to take was wasted. YouTuber NakeyJakey also tried to cover this in his video. Only explains one 1 side. Cut.

From Vinesauce:

I think with one exception or two, most of these can go.

    Vinesauce
  • Broken Base: Bound to happen with such a variety of people at the helm...
    • Between people who prefer Chatango for Vinesauce streams and Twitch chat for Vinesauce streams. Some say Chatango is the "true and proper" Vinesauce chat, while others call it an unmanageable pool of chat wars, preferring Twitch for having mods and being less chaotic. As of the switch to multiple streamer channels, the Chatango has been almost entirely replaced by Twitch chats and now only serves as a standard chatroom, so the argument has mostly become moot. Worth keeping as a historical example of Broken Base with some rewriting.
    • Vinny switched from playing Super Mario 64 DS to the original because of a control issue. Some fans are calling Vinny immature for quitting the former because of a control issue, some fans are just telling him to play it on the 3DS so he can use the Circle Pad (which still only provides eight-way movement instead of actual analog control), and others are saying that Vinny has the right to stop playing something if he's not enjoying himself. Delete. This comes off as way too limited in timespan and scope.
    • Vinny pulling a save scum near the end of the final challenge of Hand of Fate 2 by restarting the game right after he died, mostly due to him (and a good portion of his Twitch viewer base) being tired of playing the game and just being tired in general due to streaming at 3 AM. He even lampshaded it shortly after the restart. Again, strikes me as too minor and quickly forgotten. Should delete.
Vinny: It worked. (Beat) I can see the YouTube comments now...
    • Vinny's Toad Games stream. You either love it for the sheer amount of jank present in all the games played, the sudden earrape present in one of the games, and the fact that one of the entries was a porn flash game, or you hate it for those exact reasons. Specifically, the fact that the games were submitted on the basis of those specific properties by someone impersonating webcomic artist Zedrin for the sake of defaming them. Probably worth keeping. There's two distinct and opposed camps, and it's long-lasting enough that I still see occasional Youtube comments or social media posts referring to the controversy over it.
    • Vinny's Shovelware Showcase is one of the most popular of the common non-corruption blocks, but circa early 2017, the series has gotten flack for including games that aren't awful by the stream standards, but just have a license on it of some TV show or cartoon. While this is a clear case of The Problem with Licensed Games, some of the streams include Lego Island 2 and Sponge Bob Square Pants Creature From The Krusty Krab, two games that aren't absolutely terrible, in fact they are often cited as an example of No Problem with Licensed Games. The entire point of the streams are to highlight terrible games made for a quick buck, so many question whether or not the games should be better managed. Some even think that whoever sends these games to Vinny just does it because "SpongeBob SquarePants" or "Jimmy Neutron" is on the cover. It's perhaps because of this that Vinny stopped doing Shovelware Showcase in favor of more neutrally-named segments (oftentimes renaming similar segments to be less negative). This is a mix of Speculative Troping, personal grievances, and viewpoints that are already partially explained under Author's Saving Throw. Delete.
    • It would be an understatement to say that the "Art Games Streams", as they've been called by the community, aren't a fairly large point of contention. Many people in chat will call out these games for not really being that much of a game, more so just a weird way to portray someone's opinion, and it just comes off pretentious. The Beginner's Guide and Everything Is Going To Be Ok are the largest examples of this on the stream, as they both delve into topics such as Depression and Anxiety, but the viewership seems very split on how well these games tackle them. Especially Everything Is Going To Be Ok, where the comments of the full stream have opinions on the side that it talks about issues in a more serious and realistic way that should be discussed more, but on the side that it comes off as the creator wallowing in their own issues and coming off as far too unhealthy to even watch. I can believe that these games would be highly controversial (although, as of the time I've started watching, it seems to be a historical divide). However I don't think the entry does a good job of explaining said fandom divide, as these kinds of criticisms are fairly universal across the genre rather than for any particular streamer. Delete for technical reasons, although someone else can re-add it if they write a more fitting entry.
    • Both In-Universe, and out, Memes. While of course, there's nothing really stopping them from being created around a stream, streamer reactions to them vary. Vinny and MentalJen really have made it clear that they get tired of them after a while, but streamers like Joel and Rev seem to be more encouraging towards them, occasionally referencing them at times. It doesn't help that chat occasionally loves to go into sprees to spam as many memes as possible. Are they ingrained into the Vinesauce stream and enhance the experience, or are they just Forced Memes that should get a lot less attention than they deserve? Honestly not sure. This comes off as pointless complaining though.
    • Hoo boy, the Chat. The Vinesauce Twitch chat may be one of the most controversial figures attached to the group. While of course, it does allow users to directly communicate to the streamer and the other members, it's also blamed as the root of some of the toxic parts of the community. Also, many point to how chat's at times rudeness really detracts from the stream itself, including the aforementioned Art Games as well as during many art corner segments (in part due to Vinny's Creator Backlash against Vlinny leading to a large amount of paranoia in chat about certain submissions becoming "the new Vlinny"). At some points, it even stops the streamer from even wanting to stream a certain game because they don't wish for chat to freak out. For example, Vinny almost completely refuses to acknowledge the existence of Undertale, just because of how demanding chat was during Joel's run of the game. Some say that the streamer shouldn't have the chat dictate the stream, and have them play what they want, but others say that they should give into their fanbase. This sounds like a thinly-veiled excuse for fans to complain about other fans, not to mention an excuse for individual tropers to throw in personal grudgewank. Any efforts at neutrality are relegated to a laughably skewed single sentence at the end. Delete.
      • Undertale is especially controversial to the Vinesauce viewership, though more-so the streams of the game than it itself. Many people complained and tried to backseat Joel when he went through the game in 2015, which created a huge rip between how people thought he was supposed to play. While this is not a situation unique to Vinesauce, it did have lasting effects on the channel, including Joel instating new rules to avoid a fiasco similar to it in the future. While it's almost unanimously agreed that the backseating went way too far, there are arguments to whom was to blame, the chat or the actual Undertale Fanbase. Another factor that makes it controversial is how Vinny goes about avoiding the game, for example, how sarcastic and dramatic he was at the reveal of Undertale for Nintendo Switch. Some say he's justified that he doesn't care about it but others argue that he doesn't need to be so in-your-face about it. Probably worth keeping in some fashion considering it had concrete effects on Joel's rules, but a fanbase being divided over backseating during livestreaming is not Broken Base material since it needs to be long-term. Not sure whether to keep or delete but move some of this to another more appropriate Trivia trope.

BrokenBase. The Last Of Us Part II: Round 3.

Story

  • The game's early plot twist: Joel's death at the hands of Abby.
    • Supporters commended Naughty Dog and Neil for making an incredibly bold decision, felt it was necessary for Joel to die as a consequence for his actions and felt it fit perfectly with the theme of revenge, loss, and mercy. Detractors went ballistic, saying that not only did the scene betray what made the predecessor so special, but Joel was killed in such a contrived and anticlimactic way that it was unemotional and rather laughable at best. A third group confesses that they were okay with the plot point in theory considering many had guessed it would happen before the leaks went public, but felt that the execution was poor and ultimately why many were upset about it. Keep.
    • As evidenced by him letting his guard down constantly and even giving out his name unlike the cautious and Properly Paranoid man he was in previous game, Joel's overall behavior was also extremely debated by fans and detractors. For defenders, they claim that since Joel lived in Jackson for four years, it was only natural that his survival instinct had begun to dull. Detractors believed that living in Jackson for four years doesn't eliminate the fact that Joel is an experienced survivor and he wouldn't have let total strangers know so much about him or his brother and get the drop on him so easily. Even further, the complete lack of foreshadowing of Joel losing his survival edge makes the assertion feel forced. Keep.
    • Many people believe that Abby should have felt at least a bit of reluctance before killing Joel. Considering he and Tommy saved her life, they felt she should've at least some internal conflict over whether to kill Joel or spare him before doing it. However, people against this case believe that Abby was supposed to be depicted as a woman who was so consumed by hatred that it wouldn't have mattered to her. Really an example of They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot that explains why people might disagree, not BB. Cut.
  • The Anachronic Order of the storynote . People were extremely divided on this and felt it was one of the major slip-ups by Naughty Dog as it prevents gamers from having emotional connections with the characters and story and instead annoys players because of how bad the pacing can be. However, supporters say that the slow-pacing was necessary in order to fit the dark and exhausting mood. I'm pretty sure that even those who like the game think the Anachronic Order is a problem, and the people who do support this are a Vocal Minority at best. Cut.
  • Whether Abby's sections and her development could have been excluded. Supporters believe that not only does it allow two different perspectives and allow players to make a connection to Abby and empathize with despite her actions, while others argued that her sections were poorly paced and too outside of the overarching plot, feeling more like a string of random side quests. In addition, they believed Abby's section should have been DLC as it would have made Abby a more compelling enigmatic figure in the base game. Keep. But "could" should be changed to "should" in the first sentence.
  • The theater fight. Many felt it was extremely uncomfortable and hard to watch, while others believed that watching Ellie and Abby rip each other to see who emerges victorious was awesome and exhilarating. Not vicious enough. Cut.
  • The climactic battle between Ellie and Abby is the second most controversial part of the story. The fact that Ellie spared Abby as a sign of mercy was baffling to many fans. Detractors saw this as an extreme Ass Pull as Ellie had no thoughts about sparing Abby beforehand and that it would have been better if Ellie killed Abby as a sign of her making a terrible mistake and having to live with it, which would have been a bold choice. Supporters argued back that Ellie sparing Abby was actually a bold choice for Ellie because it ultimately breaks the cycle of revenge. In addition, the fact that she thought about Joel before murdering Abby makes it look more like that Joel wouldn't want her to throw everything away just to avenge him. Keep.
  • The ending is also hotly debated among many people. Ellie loses two of her fingers and is visibly scarred from her fight with Abby. After entering her abandoned farmhouse, she then attempts to play guitar and reminisce about her last conversation with Joel, where she voices her desire to forgive him one day. Then, visibly upset, Ellie walks away from her house and into the wilderness on her own, leaving the guitar behind. People have been extremely conflicted about the nature of this Ambiguous Ending. On one side, they see it as a Downer Ending considering that an empty farmhouse shows that Dina left Ellie out of disappointment and Ellie failing to properly play Joel's guitar without her fingers and leaving it inside the house is a sign of all the things Ellie lost throughout her revenge. However, others believe that with enough evidence to refute the argument, (Ellie wearing Dina's bracelet, wearing boots instead of sneakers and shown much fuller, etc.) it's actually a Bittersweet Ending and a sign that Ellie may have reunited with Dina, forgiven Joel for his lie, and become ready to repair her life. However, since nothing is confirmed by Naughty Dog (Which is their stance), it is left up to the player's interpretation. Alternate Ending Interpretation regarding the Ambiguous Ending, not BB. Cut.

I'm not surprised this game has a broken base, considering all the awards it won despite the general panning I've heard about it.

Optimism is a duty.

    Video Game/Puyo Puyo
  • Broken Base
    • Probably the most recurring one is how Compile and SEGA handle the Puyo Puyo franchise, and which one does it better. This often boils down to how the games are handled, which has the better designed characters, and how the stories and character interactions are handled. This sometimes gets bad to the point where certain fans only stick to one side and it borders on Fanon Discontinuity for the other side.
    • There's a little debate to how much of an issue that the Flanderization of the cast is in the Sega-developed games. This debate especially applies to a portion of the Compile-created characters such as Schezo, Rulue, Dark Prince, and Draco, but also extends to some of the Fever characters such as Amitie and Sig. Either it's a big deal and a waste of their potential characterization, or the change in characterization is overblown and the characters are roughly as "rounded" as they have been since they were introduced. Then, of course, there is a third camp that does not care about the story at all and doesn't see any of this as a big deal.
    • Puyo Puyo Tetris was seen as something of a Contested Sequel before the localization was announced. The fandom collectively put the debates aside to celebrate the first English-language Puyo Puyo release in more than a decade, but it wouldn't be long before the familiar criticisms resurfaced. The primary issues raised by more seasoned Puyo fans are that fundamental differences between the two puzzle games make the Puyo vs Tetris matchup an exercise in frustration, as well as the fact that Puyo Tetris has a fraction of the modes of 20th (with most of the rulesets that it does include being of dubious quality).
      • Puyo Puyo Tetris getting a dub and apparently no dual audio option, invoking Subbing Versus Dubbing debates. On one side of the argument, people were open to the idea of characters finally getting an English voice and are curious to how they will be interpreted, while the other side didn't like the changes made and thought the Japanese voice acting was better. Then there was the third crowd that didn't care about either argument and were just happy that Puyo Puyo was getting another chance at capturing a western crowd in the first place. This has been somewhat alleviated by the Steam version gaining dual audio.
      • A specific mention goes to Sig's dubbed voice. In the Japanese version, he has a voice actress that gives him a youthful voice, while in the English dub, he's instead voiced by a male that gives him an awkward voice like he's going through puberty. Some people think it makes sense since Sig is implied to be in his early teens, while others hate how jarring Sig sounds with a deeper voice. However, an even more polarizing voice choice was Klug's, which gives him a rather loud nerdy voice. Its obnoxious tone put some people off, but it still has fans due to its Narm Charm factor, specifically from his infamous "You challenging me!?" line.
      • Puyo Puyo Tetris has also reopened the debate about Satan vs. Dark Prince. Either it's a relic of early-90s Moral Guardians and should be removed, or it's a close-enough descriptor of a borderline In Name Only rendition of Satan that won't garner any unwanted controversy outside of the fanbase. Certainly not helped by Sonic Runners leaving the name unchanged.
    • While some of Puyo Puyo Champions localizated names were accepted for the most part (like Seriri becoming the more Western-sounding Serilly), a few of them weren't. It's the case of "Demiserf" (Demon Servant), "Possessed Klug" (Strange Klug) and "Alter Ecolo" (Unusual Ecolo). Either they're completely unnecessary changes that serve nothing but to make characters harder to refer to (as they've held those names for years) or an comprehensible attempt from SEGA to use less Non Indicative Names (latter two) and avoid attention from the Moral Guardians (the former), similar to Satan/Dark Prince.
    • It should probably come to no surprise that Quest's crossover with Osomatsu-san, a series infamous in the West for its..."flavor" of Shipping, is far from universally-loved. This is not helped by the crossover designs themselves, which are disliked by pretty much everyone who's not already a large fan of Osomatsu-san.
    • The 3D visuals of Puyo Puyo Chronicle also have fans split; one side enjoys them and the more lively presentation compared to earlier installments, while others find the usual 2D art more appealing and don't care for the chibi approach to the character models.
    • Exclusive to the western fandom is a persistent one on whether or not age gaps between certain characters are problematic for shipping purposes, usually in reference to Arle/Schezo and Arle/Dark Prince. This in turn causes both ships to become a far more divisive subject in the west than they ever were in Japan. Things become even murkier if you take into account the Shin Madou Monogatari timeline and ensuing Cosmic Retcon, as this event ended up creating a whole new reality where everybody is an ageless replica of the original cast (save for Dark Prince).
    • What is or isn't canon can cause quite the debate, which isn't helped by the franchise itself playing very fast and loose with its continuity.
      • Madou Monogatari in particular tends to attract this a lot, thanks to its sometimes more serious tone, SEGA not owning the rights to it and the Darker and Edgier Shin Madou Monogatari timeline. While SEGA's games have referenced Madou specific lore a number of timesnote , the issue remains open-ended and often boils down to preference.
      • In terms of individual games 15th is the most debated. Some will declare it non-canon due to the lack of a single coherent storyline and unclear ending, while others will point out that the game establishes elements like the return of Compile's cast, Klug and Feli's rivalry or Schezo's interest in Sig's arm, that were kept in future games and that SUN and Fever had multiple endings themselves. The fact that 15th also happens to contain a lot of very well liked writing and characterizations for the cast (most notably Sig and Dapper Bones) only adds more fuel to the fire.
      • Then there's a camp that believes that there is essentially no central canon, with works like the Shin Madou Monogatari continuity and the Kadokawa novel trilogy existing within their own separate timelines that have no bearing on the franchise as a whole, and that nods to other games are only used when it's convenient for a gag.

This i commented out because it popped up too early:
  • Broken Base: The September 2020 video in which David attempted (and failed) to repair a previously little-known model of IBM workstation generated quite a bit of backlash due to the somewhat clumsy and rushed decisions made while tampering with such a rare machine (such as using a paperclip to redirect the power supply, which shorted the board, and sawing off screws instead of waiting to order a special screwdriver.) The backlash also dredged up controversy over David's past actions in support of open-carrying firearms. In response, David disabled comments on the video, and produced a now unlisted response video.

Since all that's left to clean on BrokenBase. The Last Of Us Part II are Base-Breaking Character entries, I've moved that discussion to the sister thread.
