Real Life section maintenance (New Crowner 19 Feb 2024)

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

NRLEP tag:

LRLEO tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/LimitedRealLifeExamplesOnly via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]
%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

What counts as a “double example?” When can I start posting again? I just found another trope that should be crownered, and I want to share it before I forget. The trope in question is Self-Made Orphan. As it is a murder trope, it definitely seems like morality, and since it is a murder trope, I’m worried that RLE could potentially get… disturbing. The inverse, Offing the Offspring was crownered for being Too Common, so maybe it’s Too Common as well?

Re: Bug War, it's one of those tropes that, depending on how you look at it, it's either Impossible or Too Common. Insectoid aliens (or other insectoid monsters) aren't real so it's Impossible. "People fighting insects" in mundane and normal ways is Too Common.

Re: I Do Not Like Green Eggs and Ham, it's probably either Narrative or Too Common.

Re: Self-Made Orphan, I agree, there's also its individual components Patricide and Matricide, and Offing the Offspring's brother Pater Familicide, which are equally Morality, Gossip, and True Crime.

Ridiculously Average Guy is a Narrative and Characterization trope. Real people aren't designed to be as uninteresting as possible.

I'd like to add Forgotten Fallen Friend. It seems more like a narrative trope, the real-life examples listed are rather general, and even if they weren't, it's not very nice to call people "forgettable", especially in death.

I can't deal with these forums; they anger up the blood too much.

The real life "examples" on Forgotten Fallen Friend are vague and general, so they can be cut regardless.

Big Ol' Eyebrows seems Too Common and Stereotypical. Most of the examples are ZC Es and generic.

Re: Ridiculously Average Guy, yeah, there's no such thing as a "Ridiculously Average Guy" IRL, it's NRLEP-able.

Re: Big Ol' Eyebrows, I agree on principle but I know that trope's in the TRS Queue right now and, given their track history with personal appearance tropes lately, I suspect that trope's about to meet its demise soon. I wouldn't waste an NRLEP spot on it for right now.

And we can call the NRLEP crowner tropes today!

The 20-Trope crowner seemed to do alright, I'm experimenting with expanding the crowner again slightly (I will say I think this is the maximum I'm comfortable with, but I am still comfortable, and I suspect once we get through the backlog we've gotten since the beginning of May the crowners will sink back to the 15 range).

I think that Shockingly Expensive Bill is Too Common. I’m not a financial expert, but I know that it can be quite different to earn money, and with inflation, there are things that are just getting more and more expensive. Could also count as a Narrative trope, since that are plot lines that revolve around it.

I Just Shot Marvin in the Face is attracting graphic examples. It's also adjacent to murder and suicide tropes, which tend to attract gossip and True Crime grossness, and could be considered too common. Guns are dangerous. Handling them unsafely regularly ends poorly.

Big Anime Eyes (Impossible in real life) would have to wait until the next crowner then.

Regarding Moral Guardians, if it becomes NRLEP, then its entry on KRLE should be removed as it was on a previous crowner a few years ago.

[up][up][up] Shockingly Expensive Bill is definitely Too Common.

[up][up] I Just Shot Marvin in the Face I agree on principle but it was kept last September, 1.57 to 1 ratio. That said, at the time it was only labeled as "Too Common", and, honestly, if it had been crownered as "Too Common, Gossip about peoples' deaths, and attracting gross examples," I think it would have passed. To get into the realpolitik of the NRLEP crowner, whether a trope gets NRLEP'd or KRLE'd has a lot to do with how the trope is presented, I think that's why recently there's been a rash of once KRLE'd tropes being retried and getting NRLEP'd. That said since "Marvin" is so new, I normally wouldn't let it go again so soon, but it has been attracting new bad examples since getting KRLE'd so I would consider it a candidate for an early retrial.

I don’t know why but Sibling Yin-Yang feels like a narrative trope that also characterizes people, plus there are probably millions of sibling duos that can fit the trope, so too common as well. Can this be sent to the NRLEP club?

The only example on Your Heart's Desire is general (and sexual to boot), and I'm pretty sure the trope is meant for the supernatural.

Going through the wicks of No Real Life Examples, Please!, I just saw that Angry Chef has the NRLEP in their description. Any thoughts?

Re: Sibling Yin-Yang, I'd definitely agree on Characterization.

Re: Your Heart's Desire, I'd say it's Impossible, and it's also related to the NRLEP trope Be Careful What You Wish For.

Re: Angry Chef, it's a fairly new trope (2018), so it might have been made NRLEP at launch (although five years is a long time for it to have slipped through the cracks). I'll look into whether it was NRLEP'd at launch.

Apparently ~Synchronicity (who launched Angry Chef) wanted it to be added to NRLEP when it was launched.

Synch—this was meant to be NRLEP on launch, right?

I guess so. I vaguely remember posting about it here but that may or may not have been a false memory.

In present, I don't think it's so actively problematic in concept that it needs NRLEP. I may have just been concerned about troping Gordon Ramsay, etc. but we've worked out stronger reality TV rules since then.

Take Over the World is one I'm surprised hasn't been 86'd sooner. It's Too Controversial, Morality (since it's associated with the Generic Doomsday Villain), Impossible (no one's ever actually conquered the whole world, and people/countries who conquer some of the world is not this trope.

Crying Critters is a “thing that doesn’t happen IRL happens in fiction” trope, so it doesn’t really make sense for it to have a Real Life folder. The only example in the folder is repeating something the description already says. Permission to cut?

18th Feb '24 11:27:30 PM

Crown Description:

Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:
  • Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.

After you bring up a trope for discussion, please try to wait at least a day or so for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

If an item has a (CLOSED) note, there is no need to vote on it: the result has already been decided and it's no longer up for discussion.
