Yutaka's Big Fat Youkai Wedding / Recap

Tropes which appear in Yutaka's Big Fat Youkai Wedding, the eighth story in the Touhou Doujin: Dawitsu's Folly fanfic series.

Tropes:

Abhorrent Admirer: Tokage is even described as one by the narrator.
Accidental Misnaming: Tokage still thinks Jean's name is 'Michel'.
Accidental Pervert: Dawitsu ends up trapped under Youmu's bed while on a stealth mission for Yuyuko, just as Youmu enters her bedroom and begins changing clothes, and out of chivalry, he closes his eyes the entire time, yet Merlin still enters Pervert Revenge Mode on behalf of Youmu.
Actual Pacifist: Yutaka shows this aspect of her personality to the full in Chapter 2, as despite Koakuma wanting to beat her up for supposedly attacking Patchouli, Yutaka does nothing but run, both to preserve herself and not hurt Koakuma.
Aggressive Submissive: Very inverted with Ran. After they have sex, Dawitsu is traumatized by how dominated he was the next day.
Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: Both Ran and Sakuya suffer from this trope at the Hen Party, the former hanging all over Dawitsu and pushing for 'alone time', and the latter (and clearly the worse of the two) disorientated and confusing Jean for Dawitsu, Reimu for Sanae and Rinnosuke for Jean, even saying to Rinnosuke (who she thinks is Jean) that he could give her boyfriend a run for his money, yet when he puts his arm around her to support her, tells him to stop because 'she wouldn't want Rinnosuke getting the wrong idea'. Tokage also gets plastered, but considering her antics while sober, she is a downplayed example.
All Gays are Promiscuous: Hella averted. Yutaka decides to get married to Patchouli in this book.
All Men Are Perverts: Yutaka assumes this of Dawitsu, wrongly so, when he asks Yutaka if she intends to do anything... special with Patchouli.
All Women Are Lustful: Ran, at least. She tries various methods of feeling up or touching Dawitsu throughout the book. Also, Tokage and Koakuma have their moments.
Alone in a Crowd: Marisa refers to Reimu as a loner, and says she knows her better than a lot of people (and certainly, a lot of people know her, making it this trope, not quite Loners Are Freaks)
Ambiguously Bi: Aya. She not only expresses attraction to Dawitsu, but also to Yutaka and Patchouli in the form of calling them a cute couple and trying to pose for photographs intended for a 'swimsuit edition' of her newspaper...
Ambiguously Gay: Flandre, of all people, says that when the time comes, she doesn't want a boyfriend. She thinks girls are far prettier.
Amnesiacs are Innocent: Medicine 'Merriment'.
Anatomically Impossible Sex: Briefly discussed between Hebiko and Tokage. To quote:
"...Hebiko's so dull! She claims that sex scenes between married couples are a no-no because it makes the writer seem tasteless..."
Hebiko turned away from Tokage slightly, musing to herself, "It was not the existence of a sex scene that I had a problem with, it was the anatomical impossibility of it..."
And Now You Must Marry Me: Another surprisingly non-villainous example, although it's downplayed. Reimu asks Jean to marry her when she's older. Jean gets quite frightened by the offer, and ultimately answers in a deliberately vague manner, despite his recent inner monologue expresses a hatred of people who speak vaguely.
And Knowing Is Half the Battle: Parodied in chapter five's author's notes. He tells the readers to not do drugs, stay in school, and remember the legitimate fabric and paper related uses of the hemp plant.
Annoying Laugh: Jean's laugh is this time out and out described as annoying.
Anticlimax: Jean walks up to the Myouren temple, but is stopped by Shou Toramaru. She seems ready to take him down with all the power of Bishamonten... but realizes she's lost her pagoda.
Apologizes a Lot: Discussed by Yutaka, less on people who apologize a lot and more on the fact that the word 'sorry' seems to have lost its meaning over time.
Armor-Piercing Question: Alice asks Jean why it was that he left the outside world, and it takes him a while just to get to an answer, let alone one that actually answers the question.
Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: Dawitsu expresses this sentiment, thus making it a gender inversion, and when Jean remarks that he, Dawitsu, and Rinnosuke are going to be looked at as sex objects by the women on the hen night, Dawitsu responds with, 'Yeah, ain't it awesome?'. Rinnosuke does not agree... yet later expresses the attitude in chapter eighteen, but only for his girlfriend, Sakuya. Merlin also has shades of this attitude and wishes it upon Youmu.
Attention Whore: Dawitsu, to the point that Yutaka calls him a G-rated version of this trope, an 'Attention Hog', and his Chibi clones aren't much better.
Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Done for Yuyuko and Youmu (motherly), Reimu and Marisa (friendly), Remilia and Flandre (sisterly), and Dawitsu and Ran (romantic).
Back from the Dead: [[spoiler:Medicine Melancholy. But she's Not Herself.
Bad Boss: Yuyuko seems to be this to Youmu, but she actually loves her like a mother would.
Beautiful Dreamer: Subverted a la Recompense. Dawitsu gets hammered at Hebiko's house, and when he's getting up he awakes to see that Tokage's been watching him sleep. Yuyuko also inexplicably appears in his bedroom and watches him sleep, causing Dawitsu to Lampshade it by shouting, 'GAH! What in the hell is this place's problem with people watching other people as they sleep! What are you doing here?'
Beware the Quiet Ones: Keine snaps due to Dawitsu and Yutaka's truency as teachers. She gets better.
Big Eater: As well as Yuyuko, one of Dawitsu's chibi clones seems to have an obsession with eating bananas.
Big "NO!": Medicine 'Merriment' does this four times when 'Alistair' degenerates.

Bored with Insanity: Mokou. She says that she's 'bored of the simple pleasures of life [and] the not so simple pleasures of life, although sometimes, I come up with a good death for myself'. Keine thus defines this as 'enjoying the simple pleasures of death'. She then goes on to say about how she got bored of being crazy- 'I wrote a book, went insane, went sane again, wrote another book about being insane, learnt how to control fire, set fire to a forest, died in the process, can back to life, died again, and kept doing that until the forest was no more, became hailed as a sage, got outcast for being insane, got outcast from a group of insane tribesmen for being too sane, and finally wrote a book about rejection. I guess I've done everything I want to do... there's no reason for me to live any more.' Mokou even outlines the trope itself- 'Insanity is so boring in hindsight...'.
Black Comedy Rape: It's to Dawitsu, so it's okay. Ran utterly dominates Dawitsu towards the end of the book, leaving him traumatized the morning after.
Blunt Metaphors Trauma: Jean again in a few instances.
Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: Subverted. The chapter 4 name is 'Eat, Sleep, Philosphise about life itself'. It follows the Rule of Three, and the obvious last exception, but ultimately isn't all that Squicky.
Bridezilla: Patchouli gets accused of being one by Aya, but there isn't really any evidence as such.
Bullet Hell: The equivalent of a fireworks display for the wedding day is the denizens of Gensokyo shooting their flashiest routines into the air, lighting up the sky.
But Not Too White: Remilia somehow becomes even paler, her color being described as going from 'pale-skin white' to 'Casper-the-friendly-ghost white'.
Camp Gay: Dawitsu briefly pretends to be one to tell Rinnosuke that he looks 'faaabulous'.
Can't Live Without You: Zig-Zagged. At the end, it's left a cliffhanger as to whether Dawitsu is coping without Yutaka or not.
Can't Spit It Out: Dawitsu was going to propose to Yutaka but never got the chance due to this. Also, Yutaka and Patchouli breaking the news to Remilia that they're getting married involves an awful lot of false starts.
Captain Obvious: Medicine 'Merriment' asking if she died in her previous life.
The Caretaker: Rinnosuke is this to a ridiculously drunk Sakuya.
Cassandra Truth: Jean somehow manages to make his 'excuse' that he was meditating with Byakuren instead of being a Casanova sound like a lie.
Catchphrase: Dawitsu claims 'Got it in one' is his catch phrase, even though there's no overt evidence of this.
Cheerful Child: Medicine 'Merriment'.
The Chessmaster: Yuyuko. She even uses other resident Chessmaster, Yukari as a pawn to make her time more fun...
Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: While Yukari doesn't disappear from the book, Yukari disappears for a large portion of it, and Yuyuko even lampshades this, asking where she's been and what rock she's been living under. Her answer is that she was 'sleepy'.
Clingy Jealous Girl: Ran for Dawitsu. Also, Merlin is subtly this for Youmu, though it overlaps with Mama Bear.
Clone Degeneration: Deconstructed, reconstructed, and discussed by following the brief, one-day life of a Chibi that happens to fall in love with Medicine 'Merriment'.
Clones Are People, Too: See above- one individual Clone falls in love and even gets a name- Alistair.
Comically Missing the Point
- This precious exchange:
"Yes!" Ran called, "I win!" Ran got up and thrust her arms into the air, "I win! I win! Take that, Master!"
Dawitsu stifled laughter, and said, "You may be good at video games, but you're a terrible winner..."
Ran was in too much of a euphoric state to think about the statement properly, "What do you mean, Master? I beat you, which means I'm better at winning than you. So I must be a better winner than you..."
Chen put her mistress to shame, and said, "Dawi's saying that you're too loud and annoying when you win..." Ran swiftly fell silent, and sat back down.
Dawitsu smiled somewhat falsely, "Got it in one, Chen."
- Also, Hatate doesn't seem to grasp the idea that there's a wedding going on, rather she thinks they're at a "weird dress party".
Compliment Backfire: Jean and Reimu have an exchange in which the hapless Jean, trying to express respect for the Hakurei Shrine and Shinto as a religion, just digs himself deeper and deeper, until Reimu gets insulted enough to admit that she hasn't spoken to her God for a while. Also, Hebiko invokes this trope to insult Tokage's writing style after Tokage compliments Ran's looks by saying that she looks like something out of her books, saying 'I apologise for the insult, try and take Tokage with a pinch of salt...'
Continuity Porn: This being the last book in the series before the epilogue, you can expect a lot of it in this book. Notably, the very distant Grimoire of Dawitsu is mentioned in a little interaction between Dawitsu and Merlin, as well as Sanae having a manga which she clearly obtained from Dawitsu due to their informed friendship. Also, a reference to the obscure 'moral' of the Misadventures of Yukari Yakumo is made, as it's found out that the woman who died from a poisoned chocolate cake turned out to be a real person after all.

Costume Porn: There are more than a few moments of this.
Costume-Test Montage: A brief one in chapter nine. Also, Remilia is incredibly picky with her choice of clothes for the wedding, to the point of being a Jerkass to the person sewing the clothes, Sakuya.
Covert Pervert: Most of the attendees of the hen party seem to enjoy Dawitsu as a Gay Cowboy, Jean as a hot builder and Rinnosuke as a Leatherman.
Creator Breakdown: Both in and out of universe. Aya has a brief one in chapter nine, and in the author's notes of chapter eighteen, the author goes on a tirade about a bad review, but rather than defend himself, he basically breaks apart every bad aspect of his own work, admitting that he is by no means perfect, and believes that some mistakes (like Dawitsu's name) are too far gone to change now, and discusses just stopping the series here and then. That said, Chapter eighteen has a noticeably... empty feel to it, as if the author had no motivation when writing that chapter.
Crossdresser: Once again, Dawitsu gets to be a maid. Oh, joy!
Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Dawitsu shows that when he fights seriously, he kicks ass efficiently and quickly, almost curb-stomping a super-powered Minoriko Aki, and then walking away as if nothing happened.
Cryptic Conversation: Jean deconstructs this in his thoughts relating to a priest that he talked to after his wife died, asking him why God permits suffering. In his eyes, it was clear the priest didn't know, but continued to vaguely talk as if he did know, causing Jean to become bitter with users of this trope, preferring the likes of Reimu (who admits she hasn't spoken to her God in ages).
Curb Stomp Cushion: When Remilia decides to stick up for the wedding and stop Yukari crashing it, she puts up a surprisingly good fight, but still ultimately loses, but this triggers everyone else to stand up for her...
Curse Cut Short: Fujiwara no Mokou goes on a tirade about how she attempted to die permanently by going to the River Higan herself: "It's so annoying, you know! I went to the Sunzan River to get killed permanently, but the Shinigami took one look at me and said that my sort weren't allowed to take ferry trips. I hate it! Damn Shinigami! She was probably just slacking off, the stupid little..." Keine stops her from going any further.
A Day in the Limelight: This book surprisingly has a beta plot that focuses on Youmu and the implied band she has despite her only ever been a background character.
Deadpan Snarker: Hebiko seems to fill this role, and Patchouli from time to time.
Death Glare: Sakuya gives Remilia one.
Death of the Author: Discussed in the author's notes of chapter 16.
Department of Redundancy Department: Sakuya complements Ran and Chen's Hot Librarian outfits in the following manner, 'My, that sexy librarian outfit looks... sexy...'
Distressed Dude: Jean may have Took a Level in Badass, but he still needs saving by Reimu at some point.
Dirty Coward: Nue could be either this or a Jerkass, depending on how you view her actions in chapter 6.
Dirty Kid: Sosake, a kid at Keine's School- he clearly finds both Yutaka and Keine attractive.
Ditzy Genius: Yutaka and Patchouli. They plan every aspect of the wedding perfectly, and then, on the wedding day, they notice they've forgotten something. The freakin' wedding rings! They also stand on each other's shoulders to cut the massively tall wedding cake when they can both easily levitate.
Does Not Like Men: Sakuya and Patchouli think Remilia expresses this sentiment. Flandre sticks up for her big sister as defies this trope.
Don't Call Me "Sir": Dawitsu still tries to stop Ran calling him 'master'. Tokage considers Ran's little quirk 'Moe', but Dawitsu begs to differ.
Dragged into Drag: Yutaka forces Dawitsu to dress up as a maid, yet again...
The Dulcinea Effect: Gender inverted. Medicine 'Merriment' grieves dramatically over the dead Chibi Clone she had fallen in love with despite only knowing him for the short time he was alive (one day)
Dumb Is Good: Perhaps played by Merlin. She may be nice due to being a ditz, though she could be Obfuscating Stupidity and genuinely be nice without being genuinely ditzy.
Dying Alone: Once again, Dawitsu mentions fearing Dying Alone, and he considers that a very real possibility if Yutaka gets married and leaves him behind, as Ran is older than he is and will thus die before him, by which point Chen would leave, in his mind.
Dysfunctional Family: The Narration describe what's left of the Dawitsu mansion after Yutaka leaves as such: 'what he had here was a family. It may have been a strange, off-beat, and quite frankly family-unfriendly family, but it was a family nonetheless.'
Eating Lunch Alone: Keine is off-handedly mentioned as eating lunch away from her fellow co-workers at the school.
Elegant Gothic Lolita: Yutaka gets to go to a concert in this outfit. Again. It's like the author's just finding excuses to put her in one, really...
Endearingly Dorky: Yutaka mentions that she finds Dawitsu 'awkwardly charming'.
Ensemble Dark Horse: In-universe. Merlin is referred to as being the fan favorite out of the Phantom Ensemble.
Even The Lesbians Want Him: Yutaka seems to enjoy taking Rinnosuke's clothing measurements a little too much, even saying that she can tell why Sakuya likes him, and calls him a typical hunk. She then proceeds to subvert the trope by saying it's a good thing she's into women, or she'd have to steal him from Sakuya.
Evil Versus Evil: Or rather, Jerkass versus Jerkass. Aya and Tokage get into a fight at Yutaka's Wedding Party.
Exposition Fairy: Yukari, when revealing Reimu's past as an adopted orphan.
Extreme Doormat: Ran Zig Zags this all over the place.
Eyes Always Closed: Discussed by Dawitsu and Yutaka. Dawitsu asks why she always closes her eyes when they're beautiful, and Yutaka says it's because they make her look too young.
Face Palm: Hebiko notably face-palms a lot, as does Yutaka. Even Aya has one at Hatate's ineptitude.
Fan Boy: Dawitsu is a fanboy of Youmu and the half-ghosts, and this fact is abused by both Yutaka and Yuyuko.
Fanservice: For guys and gals. The Hen Party consists of most of the recurring cast in Hot Librarian outfits, the narration lampshading the fanservice by saying 'one by one, all the guests had gone from their usual strange, yet tasteful wear, to tasteless, over-sexualised 'librarian' wear that consisted mainly of a tight-fitting white top, a grey blazer, and a classy, yet curve-hugging dress... of course, it was also accompanied by glasses with the exception of Tokage, who was already wearing her own.'. Meanwhile, Dawitsu, Rinnosuke, and Jean are dressing up as the Village People, so they provide fanservice as well, even getting artwork for the moment.
Fanservice Cover: Aya presumably wants to use Yutaka and Patchouli as models for this to a planned "swimsuit edition" of her newspaper. Okay...
Fantastic Racism: Reimu is quite racist about Youkai, going as far as to say Youkai have no souls.
Far-Out Foreigner's Favorite Food: Remilia claims she's Transylvanian, and celebrates her 'rich heritage' by having a 'traditional breakfast' of Salami, Cucumber, and Cheese.
Fate Worse than Death: Mokou's existence and her eventual fate- she assumes that after the heat death of the sun, she'll be the only living person left, and will keep dying over and over again, with no variation in her death, which was just about the only thing that was keeping her sane as is.
Felony Misdemeanor: Shou becomes enraged at Nue to the point of wanting to fry her with her lasers just because she stole her chicken...
Festival Episode: Dawitsu celebrates Tanabata in Mayohiga.
Flower Motifs: Medicine "Merriment" and "Alistair" give each other flowers in their only day together. "Alistair" gives Medicine a snapdragon, and she gives him a tulip.
Forgiveness: This time forgiveness of Tokage for her trespasses.
Forgets to Eat: Jean does this at one point when meditating over the issue of Pride, but Reimu makes sure he gets some rice down him.
French Cuisine Is Haughty: Jean talks about frog's legs and escargot, and subverts the stereotypical French attitude... he loves Frog's Legs, but considers Snails to be disgusting.
Freudian Slip: A whole list's worth of them from Marisa to Jean, listing the various terrible things Reimu could have done to scare Jean away, saying, 'So, what did she do? Whisper into your ear 'make love to me, Jean'... or maybe she changed into some sluttish clothes to seduce you... or... let me guess... she spilt noodles on your clothes, and tried to take off your shirt so that she could get a better look at you...'. Cue Jean replying with, 'You have a lot of perverse thoughts about me, do you not?'. She makes it worse for herself with some Suspiciously Specific Denial; 'Hey! I haven't been dreaming about those or anything! Shut up! So, what did she do, smarty-pants?'.
Friendly Rival: Dawitsu wants Yukari to be this to him, as Yukari lampshades, before defying it by telling him to stop trying to be her friend.
Friends with Benefits: Discussed and deconstructed when Ran asks Dawitsu why he doesn't want to have sex with her.
Friend to All Children: Zig-Zagged. While it's clear that his class still hates him, Medicine 'Merriment' loves Dawitsu to bits, and Dawitsu certainly loves her, and generally giving off the vibe that he could be a good father. This though is Harsher in Hindsight in the Epilogue.
From Nobody to Nightmare: Minoriko Aki. Thanks to swallowing Dawitsu's replica chaos emerald, she can utilize Teleport Spam. Shame it doesn't last. Until Dawitsu promises to give her another chaos emerald later to help her cause an incident...
The Gadfly: Yuyuko, especially to Dawitsu and Yukari.
Gay Aesop: Remilia may or may not have had this. She mentions she was tolerant of Yutaka and Patchouli's relationship, but disapproved of their marriage, yet when it comes down to it, she gives Patchouli away at the altar, enjoys both the hen party and the wedding reception, and defends the wedding party when Yukari crashes it. Perhaps she does have a heart, after all...
Gay Cowboy: Dawitsu dresses as one as part of the in-universe Fanservice at Yutaka's Hen Party.
Gaydar: Hemi apparently has one that rates Merlin as 'red alert'.
Genki Girl: Aya is this to the nth degree.
Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Ran does this to Dawitsu to snap him out of his self-pity. Twice.
Get a Room!: Nitori apparently live nearby Yutaka and Patchouli's 'secret spot', as when they go there to consummate their marriage, the narration gets embarrassed and cuts to her, who sticks her head out of a body of water and remarks 'Oh, great, not those two magician youkai again... why don't they just get a room already?'
Get Your Mind Out of the Gutter: Yutaka tells Dawitsu that he's got a gutter-mind, and Dawitsu replies with 'wouldn't keep it anywhere else!'.
G-Rated Drug: Aya's ink addiction is still prevalent...
Green-Eyed Monster: Ran hates Dawitsu spending time with Hebiko. Even though the two genuinely don't have any feelings for each other...
Guilt by Association: Keine's logic regarding Jean initially; that if he's an associate of Marisa, he is liked by Marisa, and since Marisa is a threat to the village, he must be a threat to the village.
Hammerspace: Out and out named by the Narrator, who refers to the place Marisa gets her broom from "localised compressed space know by some as Hammerspace". Dawitsu is even revealed to have a move called "Copycat Sign: Hammerspace".
Hands-On Approach: Yutaka discusses this with Dawitsu in relation to when he helped her with her bowling technique after he claims he would never try to touch her when they hug.
Hangover Sensitivity: Sakuya and Remilia have this after the hen night.
Hates Being Alone: In a brief moment Played for Laughs, Dawitsu plays this trope straight, as he's walking through Mayohiga, hoping someone will talk to him, and gets attacked by Yukari. Cue him saying 'Oh, thank god, a person!'
Head-Tiltingly Kinky: Whatever the hell Ran's into. Even Tokage doesn't surpass her... Dawitsu is traumatized the morning after they have sex!
Heel–Face Brainwashing: Albeit unintentional. Medicine Melanchly comes back to life, now ridiculously sweet and treating Alice like her mother.
Heroic Sacrifice: Mokou takes a death's worth of bee stings to save Keine at one point. Subverted in that she's an immortal Red Shirt who's chief ability is to come right back after death, so the meaning isn't quite there.
Heroic Safe Mode: Dawitsu spends a little time in this, and chapter 6 references this trope in its name. Dawitsu and Chen get sent into this after Dawitsu and Ran have sex- Dawitsu due to being well and truly dominated and Chen because she had to hear it from a distance...
Heroic Self-Deprecation: Dawitsu, again, has troubles accepting that he still has feelings for Yutaka, and feels he's being selfish. He also does this in other matters, calling himself useless relating to his teaching skill, and calling himself a pervert (which is actually true, to an extent). He also hates himself for creating rapidly-degenerating clones for no other reason than a party stunt, and calls himself a bad person. Ran snaps him out of this one by saying that if he's a bad person, then she is too, because she loves him. Cue Dawitsu stuttering and trying to make it seem that Ran isn't a bad person while he still is.
Hidden Depths: Aya, again. When you stop and think about it, Aya is incredibly kind to Dawitsu, and in chapter 6, gets genuinely hurt when Dawitsu tells her he doesn't trust her, as well as celebrating when Dawitsu says she looks good in a Yukata. These point to her having a crush on him, but the author does not seem to develop this, rather keeping it to isolated moments. Also, she shows her kind-hearted nature to Reimu by offering to dance with her when she has no-one else at the Wedding party, even though Reimu initially thought she was just coming to take a picture of her being lonely. Even Keine gets a small amount of this- she reveals that she likes the stars, as they offer a vision of the past...
Hideous Hangover Cure: Yutaka's 'Tripe Soup', given to the two most drunk people at the hen party the morning after.
Honorary Uncle: Yutaka is called 'Aunty Yutaka' by Chen frequently throughout the book.
Hope Is Scary: Reimu seems to believe so.
Horrifying the Horror: Flandre is powerful enough to make an Oni scared, even though she's The Ingenue.
Hot Librarian: The 'theme' of Yutaka's Hen Party.
Hot Men at Work: Jean dresses as a builder for some in-universe Fanservice.
House Wife: Yuyuko seems to want Youmu to become this out of a genuine love for her, only wanting what's best for her despite it obviously not being what she wants.
Hypocritical Humor: Jean mentions that he prefers not to use violence. Cue Alice pointing out that he's spent a whole book learning spells from Marisa on how to decimate everything around him. Also, Aya saying 'Stupid drunk' in regards to Hatate before snorting ink.
I Can't Dance: Patchouli can't do the box-step... or any step, for that matter. Yutaka teaches her on the fly, and while she understands basic box-step easily, she messes up on the more complex stuff.
An Ice Person: Yvon of the Yukon is discussed by Jean and Marisa, Jean presenting it as a "legend", and Marisa asks if he became an ice youkai due to being frozen for hundreds of years. Jean defies this possibility despite the concept being pretty hilarious.
Idealized Sex: Realistically awkwardly averted with Dawitsu and Ran's 'night of passion'. When they're finally alone with each other and willing, they stand around for ten minutes awkwardly before even saying anything to each other about it, and then they forcefully discuss where they should do it. After that, Dawitsu actually has to ask what Ran's into, and the result is Ran whispering something no doubt Head-Tiltingly Kinky (it makes Dawitsu's face change varyingly, 'covering the range from 'turned on' to 'disgusted' then to 'excited' and further to 'confused'.'), and Dawitsu's response is not 'yes, yes yes!' but instead is a 'Hell, I'll try anything once'. And then Ran starts to dominate him. All hopes of idealized sex fall apart from there.
Ignore the Fanservice: Dawitsu forces himself to, as he ends up trapped under Youmu's bed while on a stealth mission for Yuyuko, just as Youmu enters her bedroom and begins changing clothes, and out of chivalry, he closes his eyes the entire time. Doesn't stop him being mistaken for a perverted fan of Youmu's...
I Just Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Again, Dawitsu is (or at least tries to be) supportive of Yutaka's wedding, since he thinks that it will make her happy.

I'm Going to Hell for This: Strangely enough, Played for Drama. Dawitsu mentions that he's going to hell for creating rapidly-degenerating clones that don't get a proper chance at life, and says that he hopes the ones dishing out the punishments are his chibi clones.
I'm Having Soul Pains: It seems Dawitsu doesn't like dominant women... after Ran more than dominantly comes on to him at Yutaka's wedding party, he lets out this phrase, 'I'm going to go to the toilet... and wash my hands, face, mouth... soul...'.

Improbably Female Cast: No surprises here, it's Gensokyo, but in this it's actively lampshaded by Sanae, who addresses the wedding congregation with 'Ladies and... very few gentlemen'.
I'm Standing Right Here: Dawitsu says that Aya's the greatest photographer in Gensokyo, and that there's no-one better. While Hatate's standing right next to her. She understandably gets a little indignant.
I'm Your Biggest Fan: Dawitsu tries to pull this on Youmu to convince her to go back to Yuyuko, but in the end can't bring himself to upset her that much.
Ineffectual Death Threats: Youmu makes one to Yuyuko, telling her to go die under a tree. Again.
Informed Attribute: The fact that Dawitsu and Sanae are friends is finally given some validity when we see them interact for the first time in this book. Yes, the eighth book in the series, when the informed friendship was referenced in the second book.
Infraction Distraction: Alice tries to hide that Medicine Melancholy has come back to life from Aya by going along with her accusation that she's making creepy dolls of people, and that her latest model is a Medicine Melancholy replica.

In Love with Love: Tokage has this attitude, being the most enthusiastic about hearing that a wedding's taking place in Gensokyo.

Insult Backfire: Yutaka tells Dawitsu that his mind is in the gutter, and Dawitsu replies with 'wouldn't keep it anywhere else!'.
Intangible Man: Yuyuko lampshades this aspect of her when Remilia passes straight through her, saying, 'Whew, it's been a while since someone's done that...'.
Intercourse with You: When Ran and Dawitsu decide to have sex, Chen tries to distract herself by listening to the music player Dawitsu provided her to distract herself with. Cue every single song that comes up on shuffle being one of these.
In Vino Veritas: Ran drinks half a bottle of sake before the Hen Party to loosen herself up enough to the point where she's okay with ambushing and kissing Dawitsu, as well as hanging all over him for the rest of the night.
I Regret Nothing: The Dawitsu Chibi Clones degenerate into dust within a day. They try and see the positive side of it and have as much fun as possible in their limited lifespan, having absolutely no regrets.
Irony: Lampshaded by the narrator- temporary peace in Gensokyo seems to have been attained by a suitably raucous and fun Hen Party, as everyone's too busy having fun to really fight.
It Makes Sense in Context: The sheer lengths that Yutaka and Dawitsu go to acquire cake for the wedding.
It's Not You, It's Me: Dawitsu's attitude to Ran. He even admits they'd be perfect together, but he's still getting over Yutaka. He gets better...
I Will Wait for You: Downplayed. Ran waits all night for Dawitsu to return home while he parties at Hebiko's house without telling her, and when he comes back, he gets whacked across the head with a frying pan.
Jerkass: Surprisingly, Tokage is less of this than usual, and at one point attacks Aya because she's on the receiving end of someone being a jerkass.
Jerkass Has a Point: When Remilia tries to justify why she hates Rinnosuke and Dawitsu so much, her justification of her hatred of Dawitsu seems... pretty legitimate, actually.
Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Remilia has shades of this, culminating at chapter twenty, where she defends (or attempts to) the wedding party from Yukari. Another earlier, yet significant event which shows this is in Chapter 15- while Remilia is bitter and is trying to make Flandre distrust anything and everything, she's acting out of genuine care and love for her sister, and simply doesn't want her to get hurt or be taken advantage of, and at the same time avoid a destructive rampage.
Just Friends: Subverted with Hebiko and Dawitsu. They're genuinely just friends.
Kids Are Cruel: When Marisa opens her shop, not one customer appears at first... bar a kid from the human village who's throwing rocks at the shop. Fortunately for him, Jean gets to him first...
Kimono Fanservice: Dawitsu wanted to invoke this trope but Yutaka defies this by having a western wedding ceremony. However, the Tanabata festival and wedding does see Aya and Hebiko in the similar-looking Yukata... picture here.
Kiss-Kiss-Slap: More like 'hug-hug-slap' as the situation is more platonic, but Jean is having a heartfelt one to one speech with Reimu, and mentions the possibility of being with someone else in the future. Cue Reimu slapping Jean across the face and asking him who this other girl is, despite the fact it's entirely hypothetical.
Lack of Empathy: Keine speculates Mokou gave up on empathy ages ago.
Large Ham: Both Dawitsu and Aya.
Leatherman: Rinnosuke dresses as one for some in-universe Fanservice.
Literal Metaphor: Dawitsu falls from the sky after visiting the Netherworld, and lands right next to Alice's house just as Alice decides to go out and visit Dawitsu's house. Cue them meeting, and Alice remarking, '...it's so strange, I was thinking of visiting your house and... here you are, almost as if you just came down from the sky to give me what I want...'
Lipstick Lesbian: Yutaka actually puts on lipstick in this installment... but doesn't look so good in it, so she decides to never wear it again. The trope is also in effect, and both Yutaka and Patchouli take the role of bride, instead of taking Seme and Uke roles.
Long List: Tokage, in expressing her regret for her first book, lists the many feelings of the people who were featured in her book and wrongly depicted- to quote, 'They were mortified. Disgusted. Humiliated. Stripped of dignity. Demonised.' She also does the same when apologizing to Hebiko for what she had done.
Lotus Position: Byakuren meditates this way, but Jean doesn't, and apparently you don't have to go into the lotus position to meditate, despite stereotypes.

Love Is in the Air: Ran uses the marriage of Yutaka and Patchouli as an opportunity to stage many attempts to try and be with Dawitsu. She eventually succeeds.
Make-Out Kids: Although they don't do it all the time, one instance has Yutaka and Patchouli passionately kiss for quite some time, causing Flandre to curiously question their antics, Remilia to disapprove, and Sakuya to find it freakin' hilarious.
Mama Bear: Overlaps with Clingy Jealous Girl- Merlin for Youmu. Surprisingly averted for Yuyuko, perhaps because she's mature enough to know what's best for Youmu (ie independence).
Manchild: Not Played for Laughs. When Medicine Melancholy finally regains her memories, she enters a bizarre mixture of a mature and childish personality, having lingering traits of her amnesiac personality, but now mature enough to be aware of her former crimes, and being intelligent enough to want to be a Cheerful Child, desperately asking to be a 'baby' that can be cared for by Alice, and also asking Alice if she'll let her sleep in her bed if she has a bad dream... it's really quite pitiful.
A Man Is Always Eager: Hella averted with Dawitsu. When Ran tries to seduce him the first time, he becomes seriously determined for it not to happen. And it works, but not without hurting Ran in the process. He also wriggles out of sex with Ran a second time, with good reason- they're at Yutaka's Wedding Party, a fact that doesn't seem to bother Ran.
Mauve Shirt: The Dawitsu Chibi Clone 'Alistair'. His death is a Foregone Conclusion, as he suffers from Clone Degeneration.
Meta Guy: Dawitsu and Marisa take their role up to eleven in this final book. Marisa constantly refers to how her adventures are part of a game, and the narration reveals that Dawitsu's mimicry abilities extend to manipulating the narration so it rhymes whenever he mimics the Grinch. Also, Dawitsu out and out says that a chapter's about to end, telling the other characters to look below, not to mention wondering what the next game will be like. Also, Yuyuko mentions that Gensokyo is unusually peaceful because of a natural regression that occurs between games'. She soon corrects this to 'incidents'.
Messy Hair: Hebiko's bed-head is referred to as being indistinguishable from her usual hairstyle...
Mirror Character: Minamitsu Murasa and Medicine Melancholy- both former mass-murderers now taking the role of The Atoner.
Modesty Bedsheet: Dawitsu of all people uses his bedsheet like one, but understandably so, as Yuyuko's in the same room as he is at the time, and she is not here to seduce him. Also, towards the end Ran and Dawitsu have them after their night of thrills, but that's somewhat justified- they were doing it in the foyer, where anyone could walk in.
Moment Killer: Chen, to Ran and Dawitsu.
Mundane Made Awesome: The wedding preparations somewhat predictably are a little more... complicated to finish unlike most weddings.
Mundane Utility: This book has the most showing of Yutaka's matter manipulation being used for mundane purposes, and Patchouli begins using Yutaka's powers extensively also, turning dirt into sake as an offering to the Moriya Shrine. Also, when Patchouli decides to wear high heels, she finds it so difficult to walk in them that she just levitates across the floor to save effort.
My Instincts Are Showing: Tokage mentions that she sleeps with her eyes open and licks her eyeballs occasionally, a la a non-youkai lizard.
My Girl Is Not a Slut: Remilia doesn't want Flandre to become a slut, making this more "My Sister is not a slut."
Nay-Theist: Marisa is certainly aware Gods such as Bishamonten, Kanako, and Suwako exist due to her experiences in Canon, yet she clearly states that she does not want to have faith in anything beyond her ability to fry fairies with her super-powered magic.
No Animals Were Harmed: Averted by Byakuren and the other Buddhists' humanely killed chicken. While it certainly was harmed, Byakuren says a small eulogy for the chicken which died to bring them their meal. She also mentions that death cannot be avoided even if one is a vegetarian, because plants are also living, and simply accepts that death of one creature is necessary for the life of others, and that as long as due respect is given and as little cruelty as possible is used, that eating meat is fine to her brand of Buddhist.
No Name Given: The Mauve Shirt Chibi clone who's death is a Foregone Conclusion, gains significant characterization but doesn't have a name... until Medicine calls him 'Alistair'.
Nosebleed: Surprisingly, Sakuya, when thinking about Rinnosuke in a tight outfit.
Not Now, Kiddo: Chen gets ignored in chapter 21 when she suggests going to Aya to find out information, but everyone ignores her, until finally Dawitsu comes up with the genius idea of... going to Aya, causing everyone to heap praise on him while Chen Face Palms.

Pet the Dog: Yukari has this moment when she tells Reimu that she wil have a successor, as she'll make sure of it, and also reveals that she gives one abandoned female child a home every generation by making them the latest miko of the Hakurei Shrine- so yes, Reimu was adopted. She also reveals that if the current Miko of the Hakurei Shrine refuses the child Yukari takes to Gensokyo, that child would be raised by her as a Shikigami in her own house.
The Philosopher: Jean and Byakuren. Marisa is also one in a more practically-minded way, and insists she isn't one.
Punched Across the Room: Dawitsu gets easily thrown across the room by Yukari after insulting her. To be fair, he was being a Jerkass.
Puppy-Dog Eyes: Yutaka actually opens her eyes many a time in this, and her eyes seem to be like this, as she uses them to convince Dawitsu to help her in a less-than-morally-acceptable plan of hers.
Raise Him Right This Time: Medicine Melancholy comes back to life thanks to Alice treating her with kindness. The result is she becomes a sickeningly sweet Cheerful Child, and thus has an opportunity for redemption. And when she gets her memories back, she decides that Good Feels Good, and pulls a Heel–Face Turn, making her re-raising a resounding success.
Red Oni, Blue Oni: Surprisingly, Youmu is red to her ghostly half's blue.
Ridiculously Cute Critter: Dawitsu treats Medicine Merriment as one- his reaction to her being, 'That... is... THE SINGLE CUTEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN! Is it a living doll? Sorry, I should have noticed before! It's so adorable!'
Ridiculous Procrastinator: Defied. Yutaka insists that they tell Remilia about the wedding plans as soon as possible to avoid the potential consequences..
Right Behind Me: This is played pretty closely to the stock example of this trope. It happens between Marisa and Jean, when Keine is standing right behind Marisa.
Rousseau Was Right: Dawitsu at one point expresses this sentiment, saying, 'People probably view the favours they give out similar to how I do... that it's no big deal. People sure are altruistic, aren't they? The world's a wonderful place...' Like the series wasn't enough of a Sugar Bowl...

Sapient House: Aya begins theorizing why a house has appeared suddenly at the bottom of the Youkai Mountain. She proceeds to say '...I wonder what's going on? Perhaps the land youkai of the youkai forest are becoming more intelligent and building houses for themselves? Or maybe sentient houses are building themselves, to create monstrous House Youkai! Oh, yes, I have it! 'House Youkai discovery! The world is doomed!' Genius, genius I say!'. The real answer is Yutaka and Patchouli are simply building a house for themselves so they can live together.
Satellite Character: Hong Meling, the members of Youmu's Band. Semi (the keyboard player of Youmu's Band) lampshades this, muttering, 'Boy, do we feel like side characters now...'. Don't flatter yourself, Semi. You weren't anything else. That said, Demi (the bassist) does have some considerable characterization.

Ship Tease: Aya unexpectedly gives Dawitsu a kiss on the lips while celebrating the fact she has a scoop. Of course it was to celebrate...
Ship-to-Ship Combat: In-universe. Dawitsu and Sanae are Haruhi Suzumiya shippers, with Sanae supporting Kyon-Mikuru shipping on the basis that Mikuru is the one Kyon expresses the most attraction for, and Dawitsu starts an argument with her on the grounds that he prefers Kyon-Yuki shipping, because the movie focuses so much on Yuki's tragic situation and how Kyon clearly feels sorry for her and connects with her on an emotional level, and even says that Yuki needs a hug. Sanae responds by saying that if he loves her so much, he should ship himself with Yuki, because Kyon's heart belongs to Mikuru, before the argument descends to simple 'I'm right!', 'No, I'm right!' territory.

Singing Voice Dissonance: Demi is the bassist of Youmu and the half-ghosts, and thus usually never gets to sing, but when his opporunity comes, despite his usual 'surfer dude' mannerisms, he has a smooth baritone singing voice.

"Stop Having Fun" Guys: In-universe. Both Dawitsu and Ran are this when playing Worms 2, using the infuriating 'dark-side' tactic against n00bs Reimu, Alice, and Chen.
Strange Minds Think Alike: Both Yutaka and Patchouli say upon Aya Shameimaru breaking their walls that despite it's their wedding day, they have to fix the wall.
Sunglasses at Night: Semi always wears sunglasses. Especially at night.
Suspiciously Specific Denial: Marisa claiming she hasn't been dreaming about whispering into Jean's ear "Make love to me, Jean", changing into sluttish clothes to seduce him, or spilling noodles on his shirt so she has an excuse to see him topless. In fairness, the acts were proposed to be committed by Reimu, and Marisa was only denying that she had been dreaming about the possibilities... which... perhaps makes it weirder?
Teacher/Student Romance: Marisa is hot for Jean. Downplayed, since it's only a superficial crush, unlike Reimu's one.
Tears of Joy: After suffering a major meltdown, Keine receives a surprise party to make her feel appreciated as a teacher again, and breaks down again... with happiness.
Technician Versus Performer: Youmu's band members are a mixture of one side or the other. Demi (the bassist and The One Guy) is a performer, Semi (the keyboard player) is a performer, Hemi (the lead guitarist) is a technician, and Point-five seems to be a middle ground to this. Youmu also seems to be a middle ground to this, requiring practice with the assistance of the Prismrivers yet enjoying every second of her musical career.
Teen Pregnancy: Marisa assumes when she deduces that Jean can't abandon Reimu despite her creepy obsession with him (which she manages to deduce is due to an 'infant's arrival' from his french splutterings) that Jean must have got Reimu pregnant. THANK GOD it's subverted, as that's not the case at all.
Teleport Spam: Minoriko Aki gains this ability after swallowing Dawitsu's replica chaos emerald. She uses it to get Revenge on Dawitsu for his most Jerkassy moment in the series.
Tempting Fate: Point-five (the drummer in Youmu's band) laments how it's her turn to write the lyrics for their song for the wedding, and says, "What if, like, the wedding's tomorrow?"
The Ace: Hebiko is this in regards to writing, much to Tokage's dismay, and manages to out-do Tokage easily at writing a sex scene after being challenged to write a better sex scene.
The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body: Discussed by Byakuren regarding Jean being Myouren's reincarnation yet being a different person.
The Power of Friendship: Murasa is said to have been reformed by this thanks to Byakuren. Also, when Remilia decides to stick up for Patchouli and Yutaka by attempting to stop Yukari ruining the wedding and loses, everyone else stands up against Yukari. Well, except Yuyuko.
The Prankster: Nue Houjuu surprisingly shows up in this book, and is quite the trickster.
"The Reason You Suck" Speech: Keine combines this with The Long List when detailing just why Marisa is a threat to the human village.
The Talk: Flandre receives an extremely biased variant from Remilia, who doesn't want her to get hurt despite protecting her in the most jerkass-y way possible- by telling her sex is 'nasty and disgusting', and something so bad that Flandre is noticeably disturbed after hearing about it. Sakuya and Patchouli try to explain that women enjoy sex too.
The Unfair Sex: Discussed by Dawitsu when giving Ran permission to ogle him during the Hen Night, saying that it's okay if she does it, because she has permission, but anyone else who does it is a sexist, objectifying woman who thinks that men are perverted for doing the same but women are somehow excused.
13 Is Unlucky: The current Reimu Hakurei is Reimu Hakurei the thirteenth. Yet she considers herself the luckiest miko of the Hakurei Shrine yet.
Time Skip: This book doesn't take place right after Jean's Magical Education, but a few months after.
Time Stands Still: In a metaphorical sense. The narrator says that the sound of the party muffled, and every other person seemed unable to interrupt Jean's comforting of Reimu (who has just found out that she was adopted) in another room.
Took a Level in Badass: Long gone are the days Jean requires an escort to go through Gensokyo...
Too Kinky to Torture: A Downplayed G-rated version in the perverted child from Keine's class, Sosake. After Yutaka threatens him with detention for not helping out with a surprise party to comfort the mind-snapped Keine, he replies with, 'Oh, that'd be great! I get to spend time with you alone...'. Yutaka quickly defies this by telling him he'd be spending the detention with Dawitsu.
Toy Ship: In-universe. Medicine 'Merriment' and a day-lived Chibi Clone.
Transparent Closet: Merlin towards the end, although before that it was played rather subtly.
Trigger Phrase: Subverted. While Medicine 'Merriment' is merely an Amnesiac reincarnation of her once sociopathic self, she regains her memories thanks to Aya mentioning her attempts to kill her as Medicine Melancholy. However, this does not cause an immediate reverting back to her original personality- rather, she becauses extremely conflicted, and eventually decided that Good Feels Good, and decides that she should spend her life atoning for her sins as Medicine Melancholy.
Troperiffic: This book is certainly going out of its way to be saturated with tropes.
True Companions: Reimu and Marisa, heartwarmingly highlighted at the end.
Tsundere: Lunasa is a type A, as does Lyrica and even Youmu. Reimu is this up to eleven, as if the writer suddenly learnt how to write a Tsundere character.
Un Evil Laugh: Yutaka has one that causes herself to say that she's not very good at it...
The Unfair Sex: Sort of Zig-zagged, Dawitsu, Jean and Rinnosuke volunteer to degrade themselves for Yutaka's hen party, and Ran's utter domination of Dawitsu that may well count as rape, yet no-one seems particularly bothered about Dawitsu being just as perverted, with the exception of Merlin's Pervert Revenge Mode. All in all, this just seems to mean Gensokyo's degenerating into a Free-Love Future.
Unusual Euphemism: Marisa thinks 'Meditating' is one used by Buddhists for... "meditation". Also, Rinnosuke says that a girl-girl marriage is... 'contemporary'.
Vampires Are Sex Gods: A drunk Tokage and Remilia discuss this trope, with Tokage asking if they're hot, and Remilia rebuffing the statement, saying her cousin Dracula is like an old man, to which Tokage says that old guys can be hot too...
Ventriloquism: Aya does a poor attempt of ventriloquism with Alice's Medicine Melancholy doll, using her to compliment herself and generally make her come off as immature.
Voluntary Shapeshifting: This aspect of Nue is referenced a few times, and at one point she impersonates Shou just to steal her food.
Wacky Marriage Proposal: Yutaka tries to avert this by simply altering a book to ask Patchouli to marry her. But of course, it doesn't go to plan, and Patchouli faints at the news, causing Koakuma to misunderstand situations and assume she's attacked Patchouli, resulting in a chase. Also averted by Dawitsu in the past, as he intended to wine and dine Yutaka, and ask her to marry him, but couldn't spit it out.
Water Is Air: Inverted with Dawitsu's attempts to swim through air.
Weakness Turns Her On: Sakuya enjoys Rinnosuke acting in a vulnerable manner a little more than she should... which leads to this trope being discussed by the women of the Scarlet Devil Mansion.
We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties: Yuyuko briefly stops to think about Youmu, who had given a massive "The Reason You Suck" Speech before leaving her house while emceeing a concert in the Netherworld. She soon resumes, saying it was a 'technical difficulty'.
Wedding Episode: The whole book builds up to Yutaka and Patchouli's wedding, covering the preparations, et cetera, with hilarity ensuing...
Well-Intentioned Extremist: Downplayed. When Patchouli faints due to being proposed to by Yutaka, Koakuma assumes that Yutaka attacked her, and becomes incredibly protective of her mistress, chasing the 'assailant', Yutaka, without a second thought.
What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: This is discussed by Jean with Alice.
What the Hell, Hero?: Dawitsu does this to himself when he sees how happy Youmu is away from Yuyuko when it's his mission to try and convince her to go back to Yuyuko (for cake).
Will They or Won't They?: Ran and Dawitsu. They do.
The Woobie: Discussed in-universe. Both Yuki Nagato and Ran are thought of in this way by Dawitsu, and he even compares the two, asking himself 'wasn't it the same here? Wasn't Ran the girl who worked and worked, never getting any form of emotional reward? Who desperately needed a hug? Who needed someone to tell her that she was worth something, that she was loveable... was it patronising to think this way?'. He also thinks about why female woobies tend to have a fan following, his particular view being that it cultivates a 'nurturing instinct'.
Yaoi Fangirl: Tokage seems to have shades of this, to quote: 'You (Jean) and that dreamboat Dawitsu... you're both putting on a show for us... it's like all my dreams are coming true...'. Also, the majority of the attendees of the hen party seem to be closeted Yaoi Fangirls.
Yandere: Ran has shades of this for Dawitsu.
You Are Not Alone: Marisa assures Reimu this, cementing them as True Companions.
You Can Leave Your Hat On: Tokage enjoys Dawitsu, Rinnosuke, and Jean's performance as the Village People... but that simply isn't enough for her. Nope, she wants a striptease, and yells 'Take it off!' part way through the YMCA.
You're Cute When You're Angry: Tokage says to Dawitsu about how when he's angry he's a lot more manly, and proceeds to rhapsodize about the writing possibilities of this...
