Allies

    Olivia (UNMARKED SPOILERS)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/olivia_68.png
"I'm going to stop you, Brother. As your sister, it's my duty..."

King Olly's younger sister and Mario's primary travel companion. Olivia has lived a fairly sheltered life and loves adventure and is determined to stop her brother's plans.

  • Accidental Murder: In the end, she accidentally mortally wounded Olly.
  • All for Nothing: Downplayed, while her goal of turning Olly to the side of good worked, she accidentally mortally wounded him prior to this.
  • Alliterative Family: With her brother Olly.
  • An Ice Person: After learning the shape of the Ice Vellumental, she can freeze water to let Mario walk across it and encase enemies in blocks of ice.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: She tends to have trouble focusing on things and has to motivate herself.
  • Break the Cutie: Bobby's sacrifice causes the adorable and cheerful Olivia to quickly spiral into despair. Luckily, Mario is able to pull her out of it.
  • Cain and Abel: The Abel to Olly's Cain. Though it's more like Archnemesis Dad, due to being brought to life by Olly.
  • Disappointed by the Motive: She's left utterly flabbergasted upon the discovery that Olly's rampage and hatred of Toads, which spirals into Omnicidal Maniac territory, is simply because he took a kind and hopeful message scribbled on him by his creator as a "careless scrawl" and all Toads look the same to him.
Olivia: That's why you're doing this?!
  • Dishing Out Dirt: After learning the shape of the Earth Vellumental, she becomes capable of raising and lower large columns of stone and of unleashing a seismic attack on the battlefield.
  • Earthy Tortoise: The Earth Vellumental resembles an immense tortoise.
  • Exposition Fairy: Like Kersti and Huey, she gives Mario hints as to what to do next.
  • Genki Girl: She is very excitable in part due to being a Fish out of Water who has never seen the world before.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Olly laments that he made Olivia so perfect and pure that she was unwilling to go along with his plan to subjugate the rest of the world into origami.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Olivia is blonde and is very kind, being firmly on the side of good.
  • Heroic BSoD: After realizing Bobby exploded to save her life, she rushes into a corner of the mines and collapses into a crying heap, unable to bring herself to move or summon the will to go any further. It take's Bobby's spirit prompting Mario to show her the Goomba paper maché head that made her laugh to get her willing to continue again.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: To undo all the damage her brother had done to the world she uses her wish to undo all of Olly's origami, which also includes her. Like Bobby, she doesn't come back.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: She often beats herself up over being scared and over how many times Mario has to help her.
  • Instant Expert: She can perfectly mimic any origami form of the four Vellumentals as long as she's reviewed it once, regardless of its complexity. Possibly justified, given that they're godlike magical origami beings in books (Bibliofolds) that might simply transfer the information into her as she reads them.
  • Loved by All: With the exception of the game's bosses, nearly every character in the game likes her. Even Bowser treats her with respect.
  • Making a Splash: After learning the shape of the Water Vellumental, she can unleash a powerful wave over the battlefield to damage all enemies within it.
  • Morphic Resonance: When Olivia transforms into the Vellumentals, she retains her eyes and crown.
  • Nice Girl: Olivia is cheerful, friendly, and comforting to everyone she meets, and even tries to see the good in her tyrannical brother.
  • The Nicknamer: Does this for anyone whose name she has trouble remembering.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: She's bubbling with energy and optimistic, so it is not a good sign when she hits her Heroic BSoD after realizing Bobby sacrificed himself to save her from the boulder.
  • Playing with Fire: After learning the shape of the Fire Vellumental, she can use a fiery breath weapon to damage all enemies in the battlefield, melt ice blocks, and light flammable materials.
  • The Pollyanna: She’s an endless supply of positivity and energy. Her first impulse on gaining the power of the Earth Vellumental is to use the power of a giant earth moving tortoise to do a cheer session, and she's absolutely convinced that Olly has good in him somewhere.
  • Punny Name: Buried in translation due to the differences between Japanese and English, but her name starts with an "Ol"(English)/"Or" (Japanese) sound to invoke origami and follow a trend of several Paper Mario sidekicks having pun-based common names.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: A little thing folded out of origami, and she's adorably chipper and wide-eyed about everything she experiences.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: She's still alive in Super Mario Bros. Manga Mania.
  • Summon Magic: Once she starts picking up Vellumental transformations, she becomes this for Mario, affecting the environment or doing major damage in battles where the corresponding Magic Circle appears.
  • Survivor's Guilt: Briefly falls into this after Bobby dies, unable to move on until Mario uses the Paper Maché Goomba head.
  • Tender Tears: She's sweet-natured and friendly, but also takes her brother's horrendous acts to the populace very personally, and sometimes it gets to her to this extent — alongside certain other misfortunes she and Mario are made to endure, such as Bobby's death.
  • This Cannot Be!: A dramatic version of this trope. Olivia says this when she realizes that Bobby detonated himself to save her from the boulder and is thus dead.
    No....No! "It can't be!!!"
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: As origami royalty, Olivia can freely fold herself and others into any origami figure she knows the technique to create. Unlike her self-centered brother, she refrains on using this ability on others without their permission. Though due to her relative lack of power and skill compared to her brother, she can only accomplish larger feats when the appropriate magic circles are around.
  • Walking Spoiler: Everything related to her in the latter half of the story is well hidden until the Purple Streamer arc.

Bobby the Bob-omb (UNMARKED MID-GAME SPOILERS)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bobby_5.png
"Aaand... that's about all I remember. You know that memory-loss thing? What's it called... Ambrosia? Amnesty? Thinky Thinky Panic?"

A Bob-Omb who's lost his memory and set off on a journey to uncover his past. He joins forces with Mario while on a tram to the Blue Streamer, and eventually comes to see him as a big brother.

  • Amnesiac Hero: He completely lacks any memory, only remembering his name. This is because he was attacked by the Paper Macho Gooper Blooper while on the Princess Peach.
  • The Anti-Nihilist: He acknowledges that he and the rest of the Bob-ombs have short lifespans, yet he remains optimistic and wishes to go out by "making an impact".
  • Breaking Old Trends: Unlike Bombette and Admiral Bobbery, he can't use explosive techniques in battle. And when he does explode, he doesn't come back. Justified, as he's a garden-variety Bomb-omb compared to the over two being more unique.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: To former Bob-omb partners Bombette and Admiral Bobbery.
    • Bombette: Aside from her being female and Bobby being a guy, Bombette had a short fuse whereas Bobby is known as a Lazy Bum with a dorky personality.
    • Admiral Bobbery: He was an old crusty sailor who withdrew himself after the loss of his wife, Scarlette. Bobby is known to be quite young and again, a Lazy Bum.
    • To both: He's a regular mass-produced Bob-Omb (minus the fuse) compared to the different character designs for the two. Both of them were capable of using explosive attacks on enemies, whereas Bobby can only tackle them due to his lack of a fuse. Also both of them live to the end of their stories, Bobby doesn't.
  • A Death in the Limelight: The storyline of going onto The Princess Peach cruise liner is focused on Bobby trying to find an item to help save Olivia from the boulder she's crushed underneath. Once Mario and Bobby return, he explains his backstory as to how he lost his memories in the first place and then dons said item — his fallen friend's fuse — to detonate himself.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Of the Action Bomb Mook, being given actual depth and character and exploring the consequences when they explode. He tells Mario that his kind don't have long lifespans, and thus they all wish to go out with a literal bang, doing something that leaves an impact. This is pronounced by his design, being indistinguishable from the enemy Bob-ombs Mario encounters as standard enemies in other games, including Origami King itself, in contrast to Bob-ombs with distinguishing features like Bombette and Bobbery who can explode repeatedly no worse for wear. See also What Measure Is a Mook? below.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": Subverted. He calls himself Bob-omb, like his species, but is quickly nicknamed Bobby by Olivia.
  • Exact Words: Bobby vows to stay with Mario and Olivia to the end. He does stay with them to the end...of his own life.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Dies thanking his deceased friend for the fuse and to Mario for being his friend.
Bobby: Thanks for the fuse, best bud. And thank you Mario, for everything! (lights his friend's fuse and detonates)
  • Foreshadowing: After Mario defeats Rubber Band, fireworks go off at Shogun Studios and there's a zoom-in on Bobby as it does. Bobby himself will go off like those fireworks.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: Averted. Bobby is given several call-backs after his death, all by Olivia. This goes all the way to the credits, where some fireworks are set off in the shape of him.
  • Goal in Life: Bobby tells Mario that all Bob-Ombs what to make an impact in their lives and to change something for the better. He gets to do just that when he detonates himself to save Olivia.
  • A Good Way to Die: Bobby says that it's the goal of all Bob-Ombs to die like this, hoping to change things for the better. He succeeds by detonating himself to destroy the boulder that trapped Olivia, happy to have recovered his memories and experienced good times with Mario and Olivia.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: To save Olivia, who was trapped under a rock, he blows himself up using his former friend's fuse. It's notable as he doesn't come back from it; his ghost confirming he died.
  • Humiliation Conga: Chestnut Valley, also known as "Bobby: The Suffering", is a long string of embarrassing and humiliating accidents for him.
    note "WHYYYY?"
  • In-Series Nickname: Being a Bob-omb of the "production line" variety, he doesn't have an individual name strictly speaking, but for specification's sake, everyone calls him Bobby despite his occasional reminder that he's just "Bob-omb" in actuality.
  • Item Get!: Does this pose with the important box that contains the item to help Olivia. Then it turns into Mood Whiplash when we learn what's in the box — a fuse.
  • Journey to Find Oneself: He's on a journey to recover his lost memories when he meets up with Mario and Olivia.
  • Killed Off for Real: Dies when he detonates himself to destroy the boulder trapping Olivia. Thankfully, he appears as a ghost one last time to give Mario some advice to cheer Olivia up.
  • Lazy Bum: Bobby's not exactly what one would call "motivated", often showing reluctance to initiative even though he takes part in battles, his idle animation reflecting this nature in being him lazily reclining with his feet kicked up. He can even start battles this way, being asleep or falling asleep during them, in which case when prompted to attack with a Bomb Bump, he'll whiff his first attempt having just woken up.
  • Leitmotif: "Bob-Omb's Encounter" (when he first appears) and "Bob-Omb's Encouragement" (when he is about to sacrifice himself.)
  • Mono no Aware: Bobby states that because Bob-Ombs have shut short life-spans, they all wish to go out with a bang and to do something great. Hence, he decides to sacrifice himself to save Olivia.
  • Nice Guy: He's friendly and polite from the moment he meets Mario and Olivia, consistently referring to the latter as "ma'am" and calling them his best buddies.
  • No Body Left Behind: There's nothing left of him after he detonates. The lack of a body does not help Olivia in the slightest when she realizes just what he did to save her.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Is lacking a fuse like most Bob-ombs have so he can't use any explosive attacks (as shown in battle when he can only use a Bomb Bump). This is because he lost his during a trip across the Great Sea. He uses his friend's fuse to look like a normal one....just seconds before detonating himself.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Becomes determined after Olly crushes Olivia and tells Mario that they have to go to the Princess Peach cruise liner to obtain a special item.
  • Rule of Symbolism: Bobby doesn't have a fuse, which is a defining trait of the Bob-ombs, to make him stand out as a Bob-Omb with his own personality. The only time he dons a fuse is when he's about to do his duty as a Bob-omb — explode.
  • Sole Survivor: He was the only one of his Bob-ombrades to survive the encounter with the Giant Blooper.
  • Spanner in the Works: His sacrifice not only helps Olivia and Mario press forward, but presumably gave Olivia the decision to help undo all of her brother's origami in the end.
  • Spirit Advisor: After Bobby's sacrifice breaks Olivia's will to go on, he appears to Mario one last time when Mario doesn't know what to do, inspiring him to make her laugh and restore her optimism.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: In Super Mario Bros. Manga Mania, he destroys the boulder that Olivia's trapped under...by screaming at it as hard as he can to destroy it and leaves the party to get his sore throat treated. Bobby returns in the next volume, saving Luigi and Bowser and reveals that he met the Origami Craftsman off-panel and gives King Olly a note from the craftsman explaining what the note on King Olly was and causing the latter to have a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Spooky Photographs: He also shows up in any photo taken in Shogun Studios even after he dies albeit in that same ghostly form. You won't actually realize he's there until you look at the photo taken.
  • Stealth Pun: He dies via detonation. Combined with the Bob-omb philosophy to leave a lasting impact doing something good, it meant he went out with a bang.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: Bobby's a Bob-Omb, but he never shows any explosive attacks in battle due to a lack of fuse. Upon donning his best friend's fuse, he blows himself up in a Heroic Sacrifice to save Olivia. But unlike previous named Bob-omb characters, he doesn't come back due to being a normal Bob-omb.
  • Together in Death: It's implied that with his sacrifice, he'll finally be able to be with his best friend in the afterlife.
  • Tragic Keepsake: His best friend's fuse, who was scrapped long ago in an accident — which he uses to replace the one the Paper Macho Gooper Blooper beat off of him in their fight on The Princess Peach to blow himself up.
  • Walking Spoiler: His fate after the Blue Streamer is basically one massive punch to the player's gut, as evident by the amount of spoilers can tell you.
  • What Measure Is a Mook?: Bobby only sees himself as a normal Bob-Omb (which he technically is), but to Mario and Olivia, he was a dear friend. Mario is horrified and races to stop Bobby from sacrificing himself and Olivia goes into a Heroic BSoD upon learning that he died to save her.
  • You Called Me "X"; It Must Be Serious: He affectionately calls Mario "Big M". But just as he's about to light the fuse, he calls him Mario.

    Professor Toad
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pmok_professor_toad.png
"Well, all things considered, it could have been wors— Wait! Who are you? I've never seen anything LIKE you. Are you one of the Ancient Ones? Tell me!"

A Toad professor of ancient history who was trapped inside a Mega Paper Macho Pokey, and joins forces with Mario while after the Yellow Streamer to discover the secrets of the Ancient Ones.

  • Busman's Vocabulary: Much of his dialog consists of college and college professor related punchlines. He's constantly excited about how far along his research is coming thanks to Mario and regularly talks about things like filling up his lecture hall with students and which Minors he has taken during his time in college.
  • Cowardly Sidekick: Self-admittedly. He's more of an academic, terrified of most things the party finds in the Temple of Shrooms, but he sticks with Mario all the same and does manage to help in battle.
  • Money Mauling: He attacks by digging coins out of the ground, launching them on enemies in the process for heavy damage.
  • Pretentious Pronunciation: Even after Captain T. Ode pronounces his own name, Professor Toad is insistent on pronouncing it as Khap'taan Teeowed.
  • Recurring Element: Professor Toad resumes the explorer type ally seen with Kolorado (who he looks and acts closest to), Flavio and Flint Cragley in the original three games.

    Sea Captain Toad
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/d146333f_1240_4c10_91f0_484585c0c866.png

A helpful toad who has the boat you need to find The Princess Peach and the Purple Streamer.

  • Chekhov's Gunman: He starts as just another NPC in Toad Town, but becomes essential for Mario’s journey a bit later on.
  • Cool Boat: His pride and joy. It gets more awesome after the Super Marino gets attached to it.
  • Forced Transformation: He's first seen as an origami fish.
  • Out of Focus: He gets overshadowed by Captain T. Ode after they start working together.

    Captain T. Ode
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/captain_t_ode_pmtok.png

Captain T. Ode, or Khap'taan Teeowed to give him his proper name, is an Ancient One who was frozen in ice and sealed deep within the Sandpaper Desert. He is the Ancient One Professor Toad had been searching for, and serves as your partner in the search for the Purple Streamer.

  • Bootstrapped Leitmotif: His Leitmotif is actually the Fortune Island theme from Paper Mario: Color Splash, which in itself is a variant on the Captain Toad theme.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: You first hear about him from the Toad Town Museum curator, who has his submarine as the central exhibit. Later on, he's the subject of Professor Toad's ongoing research.
  • Cool Boat: He owns the Super Marino, a submarine equipped with claws that can retrieve sunken treasure.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Captain T. Ode never opens his eyes.
  • Harmless Freezing: Despite being frozen for centuries, he's no worse for wear once he's thawed out.
  • Human Popsicle: He was frozen behind a series of ice blocks centuries ago, preserving him in suspended animation until the present day.
  • Non-Action Guy: He's the closest thing to a streamer arc companion for the Purple Streamer arc, but doesn't join you in battle and stays firmly on the ship.
  • Painting the Medium: He speaks in all italics.
  • Punny Name: His name sounds like "Captain Toad".
  • Reformed Criminal: It turns out that Captain T. Ode used to be a thief who stole the Super Marino from King Shroomses. He tried to hold it ransom in exchange for the throne, but Shroomses retaliated by having him frozen. Olivia muses that being frozen must have mellowed him out.
  • Whole Costume Reference: The coloration and cut of his coat, along with his captain status, is a rather big one for Captain Harlock.
  • Walking Spoiler: The fact that he survived been frozen for centuries and stole the Super Marino from King Shroomses is well hidden until the end of the Yellow Streamer arc.

    Canned Food Par-tay Trio
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/canned_food_partay.jpg

A Spike, Bone Goomba, and Sombrero Guy united by their love for food of the canned variety.

  • Escort Mission: The Spike and Bone Goomba have both gotten themselves lost on Autumn Mountain, requiring Mario to track them down and return them to the party location.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: The Bone Goomba and Spike very briefly follow Mario in Autumn Mountain to the Canned Food Par-tay and will help in battles that Mario gets in while bringing them to the party.
  • Hulk Speak: The Bone Goomba only uses the pronoun "me" to refer to himself and doesn't conjugate verbs.
"Me LOVE to open can with face! You have can? Need open?"
  • Incredibly Lame Fun: They hang out on Autumn Mountain for a "canned food par-tay". They eat canned ravioli and tuna, and have a great time doing it.
  • No Can Opener: Once they're all in one place and ready to enjoy some fine canned delicacies, it turns out that the Bone Goomba forgot to bring along a can opener. He resolves the issue by just biting the cans open.
  • No Name Given: None of them are referred to by name in-game.
  • Use Your Head: In battle, the Bone Goomba attacks by headbutting one foe directly in front of him.

    Origami Craftsman (MASSIVE UNMARKED SPOILERS)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/origami_craftsman_pmtok.png

An origami enthusiast who lives alone in the Great Sea. He is the creator of the Origami King Olly by using the Fold of Life, having wanted him to be truly unique and one of the two finishing touches on his Origami Castle model for the Origami Festival, the other, Olivia. Writing a note of his wishes for the King to become a wise and kind ruler, he unwittingly would cause Olly to become a genocidal manic seeking the eradication of the entire Toad race, sealing him up behind the wall and running off with both Olivia's paper and his crafting tools, which would become the Legion of Stationery.

  • Adapted Out: In Super Mario Bros. Manga Mania, he never appears. Instead, when Bobby saves Luigi and Bowser, Bobby reveals he met the Origami Craftsman off-panel who gave Bobby a note explaining what the Craftsman had wrote on Olly and inspires the latter to have a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Alternate Company Equivalent: Well, Inter-Company Equivalent, but he has a number of similarities with The Professor from Splatoon 2, specifically its Octo Expansion DLC. He is the unwitting creator of the main antagonist, with the intent of them doing good for the future. But said creation completely misinterpreted his words and went on a genocidal bent against an entire species. The main difference is that the Origami Craftsman is still alive.
  • The Hermit: He lives alone on an island within the Great Sea, making origami from sun up to sun down.
  • It May Help You on Your Quest: He gives Olivia instructions on forming the Olivia Hammer just before you leave his workshop, which becomes integral in defeating Olly.
  • Minor Major Character: He doesn't have many scenes, but he's revealed to be Olly's father, the source of the Legion of Stationery, and gave Olivia instructions on forming the Olivia Hammer, defeating Olly's One-Winged Angel form. He also helps Olivia wish away his son's destruction.
  • So Proud of You: Says this to Olivia when you meet him in his workshop, seeing how kind she's become.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: When he folded King Olly to finish his Origami Castle, he left a message on his paper, a wish of hope and kindness that he'd be a fair and kind king... but said message enraged Olly, who took it as a careless scribble (which he didn't even bother to read), and caused him to go on a killing spree on all Toads, since they all look alike. Even he admits that Olly's rampage was his fault in a way.
  • Walking Spoiler: Talking about him at all reveals some major plot points about Olly, Olivia's, and the Legion of Stationery's origins.

Villains

    King Olly (MASSIVE UNMARKED SPOILERS)

King Olly, the Origami King

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/king_olly.png

The titular "Origami King", Olly is the ruler of the Origami Kingdom and the primary antagonist of the game. He invades the Mushroom Kingdom and turns Princess Peach and most of Bowser's minions into his Folded Soldiers in an attempt to remake the Mushroom Kingdom and the entire world into his image.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Comes to full regret of his actions after being defeated.
  • Alternate Company Equivalent:
    • He shares a lot in common with Commander Tartar; he was created by a higher being (the Origami Craftsman vs the Professor) with the purpose of being a better leader for the future, but misinterpreted the message and gained an intense hatred of a major species (Toads vs Inklings), and sparking a war of genocide against them. They both even reuse an enemy species molded into their own images against them (the Folded Soldiers vs Sanitised Octolings).
    • Those same traits also give him a lot in common with two antagonists from Xenoblade Chronicles 2.(long XC 2 spoilers!)
  • All for Nothing: Everything started when he saw himself with a scribble on his paper. It isn't until the end when Olivia reads it out loud that Olly learns that he was rampaging for nothing; the scribble was a simple wish for him to be a wise and kind king.
  • Archnemesis Dad: Despite being "brother and sister", he made Olivia. This means that her wish to undo all his damage undoes herself as well.
  • Artificial Human: He's not real, and never was. He's not a representative of any race, nor is there any kind of Origami Kingdom; rather, he was created by a Toad Origami Craftsman and given a soul through the Fold of Life.
  • Ascended Meme: The fandom has a rather burning dislike of how all the NPCs Paper Mario games after Super are same-y Toads, leading to a good number of jokes. Come Origami King and its titular antagonist, it's no longer a joke: King Olly has a seething hatred of his Toad creator and sees his face on all other Toads wherever he goes, driving him to erase them all.
  • Alliterative Family: With his sister Olivia.
  • Antagonist Title: He's Olly, the Origami King.
  • Ax-Crazy: He superficially puts on the air of a proper ruler, but just beneath the surface is an utterly deranged individual driven by nothing but obsessiveness and uncontrollable rage. In the final phase of the final battle, this trait becomes worse. A lot worse.
  • Bad Boss: He flat-out murders two of his own folded soldiers simply because they failed to kill Mario. This is made even more egregious when you take into account that they were literally trying to alert him of Mario, Olivia, and Bowser infiltrating his castle.
  • Berserk Button: Hates, hates, and really hates the Toads.
  • Big Bad: He takes over Peach's castle and turned Bowser's army into his own to take over the world.
  • Breaking Old Trends: Unlike most villains, who go after Mario & Luigi, Bowser or his minions, or even Princess Peach, he's going after the normal Toads. All the normal Toads, with complete extermination as his stated and demonstrated end goal.
  • Cain and Abel: The Cain to Olivia's Abel. Though it's more like Archnemesis Dad, due to Olivia being brought to life by him.
  • Cold Ham: At the beginning of the game, he delivers a speech clarifying his identity and goals without his expression changing from his usual uncaring stare. However, in the final battle, he becomes a Large Ham.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: While Sir Grodus simply wanted to rule the world and Count Bleck wanted to destroy all existing worlds, Olly wishes to refold the world to his liking, with the only thing he really wants to destroy being the Toads. Unlike the aforementioned villains, Olly remains the Big Bad and is not upstaged by a greater threat who was supposedly on his side. Finally, while Count Bleck would never purposely hurt his lost love Timpani and their love truly redeems him, later to willingly sacrifice themselves together. Olly has no issues trapping his sister under a boulder just to teach her a lesson despite caring about her deep down, and he redeems when already at death's door, asking Olivia to undo everything for him before his death.
  • Dick Dastardly Stops to Cheat: Given his pretty good track record of keeping ahead of Mario, Olly inevitably fumbles at the last second trying to spite him by folding Peach into the Origami Castle... when he only needed to fold one more crane. He planned to fold Mario into the crane — he could've just as easily folded Peach and skipped the whole final battle and still stuck it to Mario.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: He was livid to find the paper he was folded on scribbled with and thus wants revenge by destroying every single Toad in return as revenge on the Toad who created him.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: A blond-haired king who wants to make a kingdom in his own image who decides that the best thing is to commit genocide on a race of peaceful denizens? Yeah...
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Legitimately cares about his sister Olivia. Unfortunately, this trait is implied to have been lost in the final phase of the final battle, but comes back after the final battle.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Is very confused when called a monster for turning Peach into a stained window, claiming that she is most likely happier like that.
  • Evil Is Petty: Seeing himself as artistic perfection, he took his creator inscribing a kind and hopeful message onto him as a careless scribble and ran off with Olivia's paper and the would-be Legion of Stationery in tow. However, because Toads all look so similar, he was essentially seeing his creator everywhere he went, and decided to fix this problem to the furthest extreme possible.
  • Fantastic Racism: He hates the paperkind, especially Toads. He hates them so much.
  • Fatal Flaw:
    • Pride. Since he's origami, he believes himself better than the paper denizens of the world. So much that he takes a note of love from the Origami Craftsman as a scribble and an insult, deciding to wish all Toads into basic paper instead of just talking it over.
    • Wrath. All of his motives stem from his burning hatred of Toads. So much so that it turns into poison during the final phase of his fight. The entire game could have been avoided had he got someone to read what the note that made him go mad actually said, which he realizes as he dies.
  • Final Boss: As the titular Origami King, he's also the game's final challenge.
  • Final Solution: His axe to grind is a surprising first for the series: he's not after Peach, Bowser and his army, or even the Mario Bros., his grudge is against all Toads. Because his creator whom he believed slighted him was a Toad, and because Toads are a race of near-identical people, Olly's means of reconciling this situation is to use the 1,000 Crane wish to wipe out all Toads everywhere.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: When exerting his power over origami, his one visible eye glows purple and red. His final phase has him glowing all the time.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: He turns out to have a message written on his stomach, which is the paper equivalent to a scar.
  • Graceful Loser: He becomes surprisingly docile once defeated, even before learning what the note on his paper says. Instead of raving or complaining, Olly calmly accepts his defeat at the hands of his sister and praises Olivia's battle performance.
  • Hair Flip: Whenever he appears, he tosses his hair, with two exceptions. The first exception is when he enters in the room before his throne room (though he tosses his hair right when he sets Stapler on the heroes). The second exception is when he is confronted in his throne room.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: His hair covers one eye and he is scheming to turn the world into origami.
  • Heel–Face Turn: In Super Mario Bros. Manga Mania he has one of these once it's revealed what the Origami Craftsman really wrote and as such, Olivia and Olly restore the Mushroom Kingdom.
  • Hero Killer: Once he's folded 999 cranes and Mario's shown up to become the thousandth and final, Olly has no reason to keep Peach around any more — so he folds her into part of his castle. While Mario manages to defeat Stapler just moments before confronting Olly, which frees the Folded Soldiers, Peach has already been integrated into the castle, thus it's too late for her. Only through the very wish that Olly was attempting the 1,000-Crane Technique for is Peach able to be restored through wholesale wishing all of Olly's handiwork undone.
  • In Their Own Image: As mentioned above, his Evil Plan involves him trying to remake the Mushroom Kingdom and the entire world into his image along with committing genocide on a lot of innocent Toads.
  • Irony:
    • The scribble on his paper only wished he became a wise and kind king. He ended up becoming the opposite.
    • While he somewhat has a point about all Toads looking the same, his creator, the Origami Craftsman, is one of the few Toads that does stand out, being differentiated by his outfit.
  • Irrational Hatred: Was so pissed over the scribble made by the Origami Craftsman that it extended to every single Toad and culminated in a plan to kill them all.
  • Jerkass: Crush your own sister with a boulder? Check. Kill your own minions? Check. Attempt to get rid millions of innocent people? Check.
  • King Incognito: The prologue shows Olly infiltrating the castle while disguised as an ordinary yellow Shy Guy, albeit with a piece of his hair sticking out.
  • Knight of Cerebus: While the previous two games had Bowser possessed by strange artifacts with no known motives, King Olly is a no-nonsense villain whose sole presence darkens the scene with his motives of creating and using the 1,000 Paper Crane technique to make a wish to kill all Toads in existence being so utterly and horrendously vile that it gives even Bowser, a Koopa who takes immeasurable pride in being a villain, some pause. He also takes matters into his own hands by throwing a boulder to trap Olivia in which results in Bobby’s Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Large Ham: While usually a Cold Ham, as he begins to lose it, he becomes more expressive.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: His plans and actions to wipe out the Toads and take over the world end up lead's him to his painful defeat.
  • Mirror Boss: The first phase of his boss fight has him fold himself into his own versions of the Vellumentals, which needs to be combatted with Olivia's Vellumental transformations. His third phase also has him grow his own pair of 1,000-Fold Arms, with Mario ultimately defeating him with his own as well (with some help from Olivia turning into a giant hammer). His second phase is an inversion — he transforms into an origami Kaiju, and Olivia folds Bowser into an identical monster to fight him.
  • Morphic Resonance: Like Olivia, Olly retains some aspects of his appearance when he transforms into the Vellumentals. In his case, his transformations have his crown, eyes, bangs, and color scheme.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: He has this reaction after Olivia actually reads the writing the Origami Craftsman put on him, realizing that he did the exact opposite of what his creator wanted him to be: a kind and fair king.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: In sharp contrast to his underlings, he clearly is not messing around. The first hint of this is when he tries to convert Mario into a Folded Solider. He is clearly good at reading people as can be told if Mario says yes to being converted into Folded Solider, immediately catching that Mario is lying. He then tries to fold Mario into a Folded Solider by force using existing Folded Soldiers. The next thing he does is surround Peach's castle in streamers and then place it on top of a volcano. Then, in Sweetpaper Valley, he crushes Olivia with a boulder both to prevent further progress and try to get Olivia on his side. And then it is revealed why he doesn't appear often, not to simply wait, but rather to fold 1,000 origami cranes to kill all Toads. He only drops the no-nonsense once to fold Peach into a stained-glass window (rather than fold her into the thousandth crane), but he quickly regains it and tries to outright kill Mario and Olivia.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Folding Princess Peach and many of Bowser's minions leaned him on this, but he truly dove into it when he reveals his end goal for the Toads, an act so disgusting that even Bowser states that Olly is insane.
  • One-Winged Angel: All phases of his boss battle involve him shapeshifting into a more monstrous form. On the first phase, he uses his own Magic Circles to transform into the Vellumentals. After that fails, he refolds himself into a giant paper sumo, using this form to combat a similarly-transformed Bowser. Finally, he uses all of his hatred and evil to supersize himself, gaining massive origami arms in the process.
  • Orcus on His Throne: Subverted, Olly isn't just sitting in his throne room waiting for you to destroy the streamers and take him out. He's folding 1,000 origami cranes to have his wish granted to exterminate all Toads everywhere. His forays off the throne are to buy himself time just as much as they are to destroy Mario.
  • Poisonous Person: Using his own hatred, he can generate a cloud of poison.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Had he just asked the Origami Craftsman to explain what the message on his paper meant, he would've never become a genocide-seeking tyrant in the first place.
  • Power Glows: When using his more extreme powers such as wrapping Peach's Castle in streamers and his transformation into his fifth form, he will glow purple, with a light royal purple shade in the former and a violet shade in the latter.
  • The Power of Hate: His hatred of the Toads, Mario, and Olivia's refusal to join him causes him to fold the world around him into his own grand design. During the final phase of his battle, this anger and hatred manifests as a cloud of poisonous gas that will slowly engulf the battlefield, killing Mario instantly if he's unable to defeat him within the time limit.
  • Punny Name: Like Olivia, he was named with an "Or" sound in Japanese to invoke origami, which turned into "Ol" in English and made the pun less clear.
  • Purple Is Powerful: He is often represented by the color purple (along with gold, but that is more minor) and is the most powerful enemy in the entire game.
  • Reality Warper: Using the power of origami and his seething rage, he completely changes the area around him to flip over the ring board, remove the Toad audience, and surround the area with living cootie-catchers. And upon getting even angrier, the castle walls completely disappear, replaced with an Amazing Technicolor Battlefield.
  • Redemption Equals Death: After his final battle against Mario, Olly becomes mortally wounded to the point of being irreparable and can only laugh when he found that his little scribble wasn't an insult, but an innocent wish. He realizes what his actions have led to and finally made peace with Mario and Olivia, requesting them to fold him into the last paper crane in order to complete the 1,000-Cranes Technique and undo his terrible deeds throughout the Mushroom Kingdom.
  • Secondary Color Nemesis: Olly's primary color scheme is indigo, purple, and yellow, much like Dimentio.
  • Sigil Spam: An emblem of his head is featured on many obstacles put in Mario's way, including the lid of the Colored Pencils, the roll of Tape, smaller Olly Tape that functions similarly to Bowser Tape from Sticker Star, all throughout his castle, and on his Vellumental circles.
  • Slouch of Villainy: King Olly sits on his throne in a rather relaxed position. Specifically, one leg crossed over the other, arms tucked inward, and head leaning slightly towards the left.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: In Super Mario Bros. Manga Mania, he never dies and instead has a Heel–Face Turn and works with Olivia to restore the Mushroom Kingdom to its former glory.
  • A Tragedy of Impulsiveness: His entire rampage was caused by a simple message on his paper. If he actually took the time to get someone to read it, he'd learn that the message was a wish to be a fair and kind king, which was the exact opposite of what he became.
  • Tsurime Eyes: He has eyes that are very sharp looking (his other, non-visible eye is the same shape as the one that is visible), and is very cold-hearted.
  • Unstoppable Rage: In the final phase of the final battle, he gets so enraged that he becomes borderline unstoppable. Were it not for the Olivia Hammer, the poison cloud created from his hatred would have killed Mario and Olivia both.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He snaps in absolute rage the moment Olivia tells him that Toads and paperkind aren't as bad as he thought. It gets even worse after Bowser pushes him off the arena in the second phase of his fight.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: The game itself is mostly comedic, but Olly is a deathly serious and cold-hearted antagonist who wants to turn all the paper inhabitants in the world into mindlessly obedient soldiers...save for the Toad populace, for whom he wants much, much worse.
  • Visionary Villain: He dreams of creating a glorious kingdom for origami-kind... which involves killing every single Toad across the world.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: As Olly puts it at during the final fight, "origami represents the limitless power of transformation" — he isn't only able to fold others, but also able to refold himself in a variety of ways, as his Shy Guy disguise shows. This is also his only means of offence, refolding himself into a myriad of forms to fight Mario.
  • Walking Spoiler: He is somehow involved in every plot twist in the game.
  • Worthy Opponent: He comes to see Mario as one by the end of the game, even promising to honor him by turning his body into the last paper crane should he win their fight.

    Folded Soldiers
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/folded_soldiers_0.png

King Olly's army of origami minions, which serve as enemies throughout the game.

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: The Folder Soldiers are made up of several of Bowser's own minions, folded into origami and forced to follow Olly's orders.
  • Involuntary Shapeshifting: They've become this way by all being forcibly folded against their will, and as one of the first thing Olivia says to you makes clear, they can't be saved. Except she isn't aware they've been invisibly stapled shut into these forms.
  • Keystone Army: Stapler's defeat undoes the staples on their bodies and frees every single one of them.
  • Leaning Tower of Mooks: One of the Spikes' attacks has them climb on top of each other's shoulders, in order to throw the topmost member on Mario's head.
  • Metal Slime: One Folder Soldier in particular, the Mecha-Koopa, will sometimes show up to battles at random. If it has a chance to attack, it'll retreat immediately afterwards. Defeating it will grant you a bag of 1,000 coins as a reward.

    Paper Macho Soldiers
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pmtok_big_sho_theater_enemy_barrage.png
The most powerful form of Folded Soldiers, depicted as giant Papier-mâché creations.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: If you see a point on their body marked with a King Olly sticker, whack it with your hammer. It's the only way to stop them. Once all the stickers are removed, you can strike them anywhere while they're not attacking.
  • Elite Mooks: The Paper Macho soldiers are effectively this compared to the regular soldiers. The ones encountered on Scuffle Island have even more hit points, upgrading them to Mini-Boss status.
  • Evil Is Bigger: Much bigger than your average Folded Soldier, and they're much more dangerous. Exaggerated by some of the bosses, who are even bigger. The Paper Macho Pokey is the size of a skyscraper!
  • Extreme Omnivore: Toads, fellow Folded Soldiers, and even the ground around them are not safe from getting devoured by these things!
  • King Mook: Three Paper Machos in particular — Gooper Blooper, Mega Pokey, and the Paper Mistake Buzzy Beetle — serve as boss battles, as they have more advanced tactics and can take a lot more damage.
  • Punny Name: Mâché? Macho? Both are quite apt for what they're made of and how massive they are.
  • Portmanteau: "Paper Macho" is a combination of "papier-mâché" and "Paper Mario."

    Paper Macho Gooper Blooper
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pmtok_gooper_blooper.png

A giant blooper that attacked the Princess Peach, and still patrols it when Mario and Bobby go there to retrieve the latter's safety deposit box.

  • Combat Tentacles: It fights primarily using blows from its tentacles, which need to be destroyed individually before Mario can attack the Blooper itself.
  • Funnel-Mouthed Cephalopod: It has a circular nozzle-like mouth, which it uses to spit out jets of ink.
  • Giant Squid: A colossal squid-like Blooper that attacks a cruise ship on the high seas.
  • Shockwave Stomp: It slams its tentacle arms on the deck of the boat, which create circular shockwaves that damages Mario if they hit him.

    Paper Macho Chain Chomp
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/paper_macho_chain_chomp.png
"This wild animal is off the chain! Once it sets its big, round eyes on something, it'll chase it forever. So... start running!"

A ferocious, mindlessly aggressive beast that chases Mario and his companions as they try to reach the Spring of Jungle Mist.

  • Advancing Boss of Doom: It's not fought so much as fled from. During its sequence, Mario must scramble as fast as he can to stay ahead of it while it charges after him on a long, narrow path, on pain of a Nonstandard Game Over if it ever catches up to him, until he can swing across to another tree and let the beast plummet to its doom when it tries to leap in pursuit.
  • Eaten Alive: Anything it catches, whether Folded Soldier or Mario, is rapidly and messily devoured while still struggling.
  • Food Chain of Evil: In order to establish how dangerous and aggressive this beast is, its introduction shows it messily devouring the common enemies that Mario had been dealing with up until that point.
  • Nonstandard Game Over: If it catches up to Mario during its chase sequence, the player gets an automatic Game Over regardless of how much health Mario may have at the moment.
  • Run or Die: The only thing Mario can do against it is to flee; if the Chain Chomp ever catches up, Mario gets Eaten Alive.
  • The Unfought: An odd example. It's permanently defeated by luring it off the floating island when Mario and co. swing on the rope to the hot spring, but it's not actually battled like any other Paper Macho enemy.

    Cutout Soldiers (UNMARKED SPOILERS)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2020080312311600_045b57cf1a7936dcd924c36515c75e20_1024x576.jpg
The "Lil'" variants
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/big_cutout_soldier.jpg
The "Big" variants

Disturbing, vaguely-humanoid paper cutouts that plague Bowser's Castle, in a last-ditch effort to prevent Mario from reaching the Throne Room.

  • All There in the Manual: These things were created by Scissors according to their trophy.
  • Bizarre Alien Locomotion: Downplayed in that it's only relate to them revealing themselves. The Big variants like to slide out from behind pillars.
  • The Blank: They have no faces or other features on their bodies. They're just blank cutouts in the shape of humanoids.
  • Dark Is Evil: All jet-black, and all as evil as they come.
  • Humanoid Abomination: At least the Folded Soldiers are variants on classic Mario enemies. These things, on the other hand? The Big Soldiers almost look like Endermen, and the Lil' ones bring a Creepy Child vibe to them!
  • Lean and Mean: The Big Soldiers; just as tall and thin as they are creepy!
  • Me's a Crowd: The Lil' Soldiers can duplicate themselves by expanding like a paper doll chain, making them immune to column-sliding. You need to group them all together in order to line them up for an attack.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: These guys look nothing at all like you'd expect from a Super Mario game. You'd be forgiven if they were from some other title at first.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: Barring the description on their trophy, next to nothing is known about these things. How were they made? Why did Scissors make them? Where do they go once Scissors is defeated?
  • One-Shot Character: Well, characters, rather, but still applies. They only appear during the last few sections of the Green Streamer arc, providing a bit of a scare for a few rooms. They don't show up anywhere else.
  • Walking Spoiler: This enemies have no sign of foreshadowing until you encounter them in Bowser's Castle.
  • Zombie Gait: The Big Soldiers move this way, as if to emphasize how... unnatural they are.

    Handaconda (UNMARKED SPOILERS)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/handaconda.png

A creepy, snakelike strand of paper with a hand at the end. It briefly captures Olivia and can make shadowy cut-outs to fight Mario. It enjoys rock-paper-scissors.

  • Eldritch Abomination: Compared to its fellow cutouts, there's something about it that feels... off. Even Olivia is confused on just what the heck this thing even is!
  • Giant Hands of Doom: In true Nintendo fashion, it's a giant hand serving as a boss battle.
  • Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: It appears out of nowhere, with no implied or over foreshadowing, once you get fairly deep within Bowser's Castle.
  • Interface Screw: It'll flick away any attack panels that are in the ring closest to it, and none of the Magic Circles can be used as long as it still has Olivia in its grasp. Even after she gets freed, it changes the Circles to get rid of the Vellumental attacks and replace them with rock-paper-scissor commands.
  • King Mook: Of the Cutout Soldiers.
  • Kung Fu-Proof Mook: Just like Tape, jump attacks are useless against Handaconda; it will instantly counter by grabbing Mario and tossing him away.
  • Portmanteau: Hand + Anaconda = Handaconda.
  • Rock–Paper–Scissors: The second part of boss fight is this. Win a round, and Mario can pummel the Handaconda with his mighty 1,000-Fold Arms. You lose a round, and Handaconda can strike you instead. A tie means neither get a turn that round, and Handaconda's hand gets bigger.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: Handaconda acts in some ways like a snake when you fight it (coils in the center of the ring, lashes out at Mario with just its head when attacking), and it is responsible for abducting Kamek and Olivia on behalf of Scissors.
  • Walking Spoiler: Like the Cutout Soldiers, they appearance is a huge surprise.

Paper Mistake Buzzy Beetle (UNMARKED SPOILERS)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/paper_mistake_buzzy_beetle.png
"This horrific creation was made from the faces of Bowser's minions. And each face still speaks, so it's really chatty."

The penultimate boss of Bowser's Castle, the Paper Mistake Buzzy Beetle is a special creation of Scissor's, made by cutting out the faces of Bowser's minions and pasting them together to create a monstrosity that is then sent after Mario.

  • And I Must Scream: Scissors turns many of Bowser's minions — and his son — into a mass of shreds that he pasted into a giant monster. They're all still alive in there, and screaming for Mario to save them.
  • Body Horror: It's made up of hundreds of faces cut from their bodies and pasted onto a Paper Macho Buzzy Beetle. At a first glance, they don't look very disturbing to look at until you think about what it might have looked like if the art style had been a little less stylized, and what they must look like to in-universe characters...
  • Body of Bodies: Its composed primarily out of the cut-out, still-living faces of Scissor's victims.
  • Flunky Boss: During the first phase of its fight, it attacks by creating floating Dry Bones heads out of the faces on its body and sending them chasing after Mario.
  • Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: It serves as Scissors' last-ditch effort to stop Mario and has little to no foreshadowing.
  • Living Battery: Kamek's face is used this way to give the Paper Mistake Buzzy Beetle magic that it uses to make homing missiles shaped like Dry Bones heads out of the faces that make up its living armor. Breaking them renders those scraps inert and soon reveals Kamek on the monster's nose, and removing him makes the rest of the armor fall apart.
  • Spin Attack: During its second phase, when its ranged blasts are reabsorbed into its body, it spins rapidly in place to damage Mario if he's close to it. In its third phase, it starts spinning around the arena to hit Mario instead.
  • Walking Spoiler: Their appearance is a huge surprise.

The Legion of Stationery

    In General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pmok_legion_of_stationery.png
Sheesh. How did all these harmless origami-making tools end up with such tacky personalities?

A group of six living arts and crafts supplies who serve King Olly and are the secondary antagonists in the game. Five members each guard the end of a streamer, and they serve as the bosses for each area.

  • Added Alliterative Appeal: All of them have titles consisting of two alliterative words.
    • The Missile Maestro for Colored Pencils.
    • The Elastic Entertainer for Rubber Band.
    • The Disco Devil for Hole Punch.
    • The Shifty Sticker for Tape.
    • The Dual-bladed Duelist for Scissors.
    • The Fanged Fastener for Stapler.
  • Ambiguous Gender: It's not really clear what their genders are (or if they even have genders at all), thanks to the fact that the game uses multiple pronouns when addressing them, even on their trophies. Maybe averted with Colored Pencils, as his trophy is the only one to use male pronouns. Hole Punch is also referred to by male pronouns by DJ Toad.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: They're all supersized pieces of living, talking art supplies, without even faces or other concessions to anthropomorphism. They were originally just the art supplies of the Origami Craftsman, but when Olly left, he took the supplies with him and made them alive with his magic.
  • Boss Subtitles: All of them get these upon their arrival, complete with Red Baron nicknames.
  • Bully Brutality: Despite their positions, they allnote  seem to largely preoccupy themselves with assaulting the Toad populace in various ways. Given their King's grudge, however, this may be deliberate.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: Each member shares part of their color scheme with the streamer they guard (Colored Pencils' red case, Tape’s purple dispenser, Hole Punch's yellow lever, Scissors' green handles, and some blue rubber bands making up part of... Rubber Band). And even Stapler counts. Although Peach's Castle/Origami Castle doesn't have a streamer, the area's color is coded as black by the fast-travel warp pipe, and Stapler's body is the traditional black.
  • Deconstruction: Of the Things used in Sticker Star and Color Splash. Like the Things, the Legion are massive, real world objects who have very destructive power and can shape the paper world around them, but that level of power is terrifying when it's not on your side. This is best shown with Hole Punch, who, their kooky Disco Dan personality aside, stole the Sun to use as a disco ball and the faces of forty Toads just to have them dance with them. Scissors, meanwhile, is a thing of Kryptonite, and can turn Bowser's entire army into confetti and one-shot you in battle.
  • Defeat Equals Explosion: When they lose, shining cracks form on their bodies and then blow up.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: They're all named after what they are.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Mario's 1,000-Fold Arms techniques use some trait of theirs against them, such as shutting Colored Pencils' case to make his missiles to explode inside of him, or using Tape's metal blade to anchor them to the floor so Mario can freely deplete their tape supply. Depleting their final hit points in these humiliating ways gets you extra Coins as a "1,000-Fold Arms Finisher" bonus.
  • It's All About Me: With exception of Stapler, who amounts to Olly's attack dog, The Legion of Stationery all suffer from their King's same tendency of buying into their own hype. Each and every one of them demonstrate their own brand of morally-bankrupt narcissism.
    • Colored Pencils relies too much on his prized pencils and loses them permanently during his "Rainbow Roll" attack when Mario turns them on him.
    • Rubber Band only cares about being the star, but even when they have a literal captive audience and stages multiple deadly performances, Mario gets through them all and wins the crowds' affection.
    • Hole Punch's dance moves constantly expose their weak point, and their special dance move is used against them to trip them up and stun them. They only care about disco and nothing else, having stolen the sun to use as a disco ball and the faces of hapless Toads just because they wouldn't dance with them, and when Olivia calls them out on it, they couldn't care less.
    • Tape flat out cheats by sticking up the attack board to make things harder, but since it's Cast from Hit Points, burning them away only makes them weaker. They also tape the Toads on the Great Sea Tower in humiliating poses just for kicks.
    • Scissor is an Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy who could one-shot you with little trouble, but decides to handicap themself with a cover just to make things interesting. That's not even getting into the freakish Paper Macho monstrosity they made from pieces of Bower's minions just for kicks.
  • Large Ham: All of them except Stapler are as full of themselves as their master and go out of their way to do their villainy in the most over-the-top way possible for their own amusement. Special mention to Rubber Band who styled their entire operation as a play with themselves cast as both director and star.
  • No Ontological Inertia: No matter how much damage they do, all of their effects on the environment and the paper populace are instantly undone by their defeat.
  • Quirky Miniboss Squad: All of them (with the exception of Scissors and Stapler) are pretty silly with their own unique personality quirks. It's even lampshaded by Olivia at one point when she and Mario are facing Tape at the top of the Sea Tower:
Olivia: Sheesh. How did all these harmless origami-making tools end up with such tacky personalities?
  • Signature Move: Each of them have their own flashy moves, but each of them also have their own special move that will usually do a lot of damage.note
    • Colored Pencils has "Rainbow Roll", making his missiles form a roll and having them fire horizontally at Mario.
    • Rubber Band has "Solo Snapback", an extremely powerful move that consists of them using their body (the remaining rubber band) to essentially power-slap Mario.
    • Hole Punch has "The Whole Punch", a move that consists of a body slam, then punching two holes in Mario, and then throwing said punches at Mario.
    • The closest thing Tape has to a signature move is "Roll Out", which funnily enough, doesn't actually attack Mario. The move consists of Tape rolling around on the battlefield and taping the rings together.
    • Scissors has "Final Cut", a One-Hit KO attack that consists of them charging at Mario blades-first.
    • Stapler has "Bite Barrage", which is a series of bites that damages Mario. The damage done to Mario is dependent on how many staples Stapler has in its mouth.
  • Turns Red: Each member of the Legion has a second phase where they either start using stronger attacks or change up their tactics entirely up to the point where they'll attempt to unleash their own Signature Move by emitting a yellow aura around them.
    • Colored Pencils starts to use his powerful Rainbow Roll attack each turn, which also has the side effect of preventing his case from being closed.
    • When Rubber Band loses all their bands, they start hitting with extremely powerful attacks to compensate for being a One-Hit-Point Wonder.
    • Hole Punch charges up a special attack that can only be dodged with the Earth Vellumental's aid.
    • Tape starts taping up panels after losing their dispenser, and using the highly damaging Sticky Drill and Sticky Spin attacks.
    • Scissors unsheathes their blade and prepares their One-Hit Kill attack every turn. Interestingly, this phase can be triggered early by destroying their cover.
    • Stapler "reloads" with red staples that do more damage per staple at 2/3 health. When it's around 1/3 health, it starts using golden staples that do even more damage.
  • Visual Pun: They're a group of sentient office supplies that stay in the middle of the ring during their boss fights. In other words, they're stationary stationery.

    Colored Pencils

Colored Pencils, the Missile Maestro

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1f541f35_8519_4da2_8bfc_eea0f380b0dc.png

Full name Jean-Pierre Colored Pencils the 12th, he is a case with a set of 12 colored pencils who guards the end of the red streamer. He launches his pencils as projectile missiles at foes from their case on top of Overlook Tower, which has been turned into their personal art gallery.

  • Added Alliterative Appeal: In Dutch, their full name is "KLaudius KLementinus KLeurpotloden XII" (and yes, the "KL", as in "KLasbak", is in fact in all-caps).
  • Art Attacker: Downplayed; while they make attractive art (if a bit macabre based on the "lost life" Mario drawing), they use their colored pencils as missiles and Gatling bullets.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Instead of waiting for Mario to reach him like the other Legion members, Colored Pencils attacks the elevator in Overlook Tower when Mario's still on it in what is clearly an attempt to kill Mario via sneak attack. When Mario survives and takes the stairs and ladders up, pencil missiles continue to bombard Mario all the way to the top.
  • Crosshair Aware: You can tell where his missiles will land from the reticles that show up after they fire. Make sure Mario doesn’t wind up walking into the reticles or he’ll be hit.
  • Death by a Thousand Cuts: His missiles might not hurt that much, doing only 2 damage if they hit and 1 if Mario manages to guard against them, but he has a lot of them and will shoot all the ones he didn’t shoot at the start of his turn at Mario if he is in front of him.
  • French Jerk: Downplayed, he has a French name but doesn't otherwise show any stereotypes or hints of his nationality the way Broque Monsieur does.
  • Fun with Acronyms: In the French version, his full name is "Côme Raoul Aimé Yves Oscar Nicolas Siméon de Couleur, 12ème du nom". Other than being ridiculously pompous, his first seven names are an acronym for "Crayons", which is the French word for "Pencils", with "Crayons de Couleur" meaning... Colored Pencils.
  • Hipster: Throughout the battle he talks like one and displays these mannerisms. Both the original definition of "hipster" and the modern definition of an It's Popular, Now It Sucks! fan. Both are displayed during his final quote.
"You were better when you were a sidescroller, man..."
  • It Only Works Once: Downplayed; after his lid is forced shut twice, he switches to the Rainbow Roll, which is too thick to let the lid close again.
  • Macross Missile Massacre: He launches his pencils as missiles to attack. These missiles are used to harass Mario on the way up the tower, and during the boss fight.
  • Man Bites Man: One of their attacks is snapping its case shut. According to character dialogue, that's their mouth.
  • Oh, Crap!: They starts panicking when Mario closes their lid mouth, as they can't stop their pencils from exploding.
  • Overly Long Name: Their full name is "Jean-Pierre Colored Pencils the 12th", which is too much for Olivia to remember, so she just calls him "Colored Pencils". Exaggerated in the French version, where his full name is changed to "Côme Raoul Aimé Yves Oscar Nicolas Siméon de Couleur, 12ème du nom".
  • Painting the Medium: When his mouth is full, he speaks in multi-colored text. When Mario breaks him, the text is all greyish-colored.
  • Some Call Me "Tim": Due to the nature of his Overly Long Name, Olivia decides to just call him Colored Pencils for short. That's literally what he is, anyway.
  • Starter Villain: The first and weakest member of the Legion Mario fights.
  • Stealth Pun: If you managed to critically damage Colored Pencils during his Rainbow Roll attack and he's still alive, the damaged case himself still attacks with a pathetically weak attack ... called "Worst Case" ... literally the worst case scenario for him.
  • Stop Hitting Yourself: His pencil missiles are used to defeat him, especially during the second phase of the battle.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: His battle assumes you have the boss ring puzzle form down, with multiple panels being marked with dangerous colored pencil targets. His weak points are also harder to reach than the previous boss. There's also the fact that this is the first boss battle to feature an "ON" panel that activates any Magic Circle panels on the arena, meaning you have to create a path to not only attack his weak points, but to cross the "ON" panel as well in order to activate the 1,000-Fold Arms Magic Circle.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: While the Colored Pencils are powerful and numerous, when Mario closes their case's lid, the Pencils can't stop its missiles from launching or reopen his lid in time, and takes damage and stuns himself with his own attack.

    Rubber Band

Rubber Band, the Elastic Entertainer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rubber_band_pmtok.png

A humanoid entity made up of rubber bands who guards the end of the blue streamer within Big Sho' Theater. They use their bands to hold the Toads in the theater captive to their performances.

    Hole Punch

Hole Punch, the Disco Devil

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hole_punch_pmtok.png

A hole puncher with a passion for disco, who guards the end of the yellow streamer. Stole the sun to use as a disco ball and the faces of the Toads to have them dance for them within the Temple of Shrooms.

  • Attack Its Weak Point: Attacking Hole Punch head-on results in zero damage. Mario needs to move around to where the rubber lid is and attack that for damage.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: They're a kooky Hipster Disco Dan, but stole the sun to use as a disco ball and faces of hundreds of Toads just to have them dance with them.
  • Disco Dan: They dance to disco music and even dance during their boss fight. Appropriately, their title is the "Disco Devil".
  • Face Stealer: Stole the faces of the Toads by punching a hole into them. Can also do this to you during the fight, which also counts as Maximum HP Reduction.
  • Geo Effects: At the start of every round, they will punch holes into the arena floor. Woe betide Mario if he falls in.
  • Graceful Loser: Downplayed, but after he's defeated instead of a grand last quote, while unhappy about losing, he says to Mario to carry on the disco spirit and even counts down to his own destruction.
  • Hipster: They only like disco, and has a low opinion on other music genres even though they can understand their appeal.
  • Lack of Empathy: They care about dancing and only dancing. So they don't care that they're holding a bunch of now faceless Toads hostage just to have them dance with them. Olivia even calls them monstrous.
  • Maximum HP Reduction: When Hole Punch punches a hole in Mario, his Max HP drops. He'll need to recover the part that was punched out to bring his Max HP back up.
  • Michael Jackson's Thriller Parody: Mario has to gather the forty faceless, vaguely "undead" Toads to dance to "Thrills at Night" in order to draw out Hole Punch for battle.
  • Pet the Dog: While they enjoy only disco and make their disdain for any other music genre clear, they are admittedly less harsh on the "Deep, Deep Vibes", admitting that they see the appeal behind it and simply state that it's just personally not their thing, which is a much nicer response when compared to how they verbally tear down "Heartbeat Skipper" and "M-A-X Power!" should Mario have DJ play these songs.

    Tape

Tape, the Shifty Sticker

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tape_pmtok.png

A big roll of sticky tape in a plastic dispenser who guards the end of the purple streamer. They stuck thousands of Toads all over the Sea Tower, which is also the way to Shangri-Spa.

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Noticeably, unlike the rest of the Legion of Stationary, Tape is the only one of the group to actively beg Mario for mercy after his defeat.
"Don't do this to me! I'm a changed adhesive! I won't stick nobody up no more, I swear! Boss! Olly! You gotta avenge me!"
  • Blood Knight: Unlike their colleague Scissors, who's only confident as long as they think they can kill their enemy at any point, Tape only starts having a good time as soon as Mario breaks their dispenser and forces them to take the field personally.
  • Brooklyn Rage: If their dialogue is any indication, they have a Brooklyn accent and the mean streak to match. Olivia even calls them a "cheating gangster."
  • Badass Biker: Makes motorcycle roars and skidding sounds when they roll around the stage to stick tape everywhere. Tape may be specifically tied to All Bikers are Hells Angels, given their gangster personality and Brooklyn accent, and even their dispenser can be seen as a Cool Bike.
  • Cast from Hit Points: When they tape panels together, they lose a little of their HP. They can restore themselves like Rubber Band if you don't burn them.
  • Character Catchphrase: "Hey! I'm [x]in' here!"
  • Delinquent Hair: The strand of tape sticks out with a curl, referencing a pompadour hair style. Fitting for their gangster personality, wouldn't you say?
  • Dub Personality Change: In the original Japanese game, Tape is depicted as a stereotypical Japanese Delinquent with hints of Yakuza and with the appropriate dialogue to match. The English version turns it into a mafia member instead.
  • Funetik Aksent: Tape acts like a stereotypical Italian-American gangster and has an exaggerated accent to match their personality. They pronounce "that" as "dat", "girl" as "goil" and "hurts" as "hoits".
  • Kung Fu-Proof Mook: Trying to jump on Tape will have them just catch Mario mid-air and throw him away.
  • Improbable Weapon User: After Mario destroys the tape dispenser, Tape settles for using just their cutting mechanism. This proves to be an incredibly versatile weapon and forms the core of all of Tape's attacks from here on out.
  • Incoming Ham: "Hey! I'm elevatin' here!"
  • Neat Freak: As a part of their gangster penchant for "leaving no evidence" and keeping things nice and tidy, most of the panels in their battle arena are stored in the treasure chest. Any used panels that aren't arrows or basic attacks will also be sneakily put back in the chest when they're used, forcing the player to keep hitting the chest if they want to do meaningful damage.
  • Nonchalant Dodge: Trying to use a flower item when it's out of the dispenser will simply have it turn so the projectile goes through its hole.
  • Sticky Situation: The thing is a roll of sticky tape, what did you expect?
  • Super Mob Boss: Able to pick a fight with Mario, while having the dialect of the composed, confident mafioso, and is in charge of all the Folded Soldiers in their region. They even start their boss fight effectively sitting in their own chair of sorts, and the tape cutter they attach to themself on their second phase can be likened to a set of brass knuckles, completing the allusion.
  • Tactical Suicide Boss: Tape uses tactics Cast from Hit Points, using pieces of its body to stick the battlefield's rings together but shedding health when doing so. Burning the tape off with Olivia's Fire Vellumental power reopens movement and eliminates all the hit points they put down onto the arena in the form of their pieces, which serves as the main way of whittling away at Tape's health.
  • Trick Boss: The first phase is easy and their attacks aren't very damaging, but once the dispenser is broken they get serious.
  • Victory Fakeout: Destroying the tape dispenser causes Tape to disappear, leading to a fake victory pose before Tape drops back in as they weren't actually destroyed with the dispenser.

    Scissors (UNMARKED SPOILERS)

Scissors, the Dual-Bladed Duelist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/scissors_pmtok.png

A pair of scissors who guards the end of the green streamer. They use their blade skills to make confetti out of Bowser's forces and take over his castle, which had crashed into Shangri-Spa.

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: Scissors is so sharp that even iron boots won't protect Mario from getting sliced in half.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: They're scissors in a world of paper; this makes them exactly as powerful and deadly towards everything else as that implies, and they're perfectly aware of it. This ends up being their downfall, however, as they severely underestimate Mario's ability to fight them while avoiding their lethal attacks.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Scissors has a small number of moves at their disposal while the sheath is in place, but once unsheathed they will use Final Cut exclusively until one of you dies.
  • Ax-Crazy: They hide it fairly well, but Scissors is nonetheless a bloodthirsty lunatic who enjoys slicing up the paper world and creating twisted amalgamations out of their remains.
  • Blood Knight: Zigzagged. They're the most enthusiastic about cutting up Olly's enemies. They also cover up their blade specifically so they can have a longer fight against Mario. They later become so giddy about Mario's fighting skill that they start jumping around and doing flips, which causes Mario to have to time his attacks so as not to hit the cover. However, this only lasts until Mario whittles their health down, whereupon they try to invoke their One-Hit Kill and starts throwing a tantrum when they can't just win immediately.
  • Break the Haughty: They act like a noble, refined swords...thing in the beginning of the match, even sheathing their blade to "make it fair", but this only counts insofar as they're convinced that the moment they try, Mario is done for. As soon as it becomes clear Mario can just jump their lethal attack, they drop the polite façade annd even and accuse Mario of cheating.
  • The Caligula: Upon taking over Bowser's Castle, Scissors turns it into their own disturbing art studio where they create cut-out abominations and slice people up for fun.
  • Challenge Seeker: Scissors has grown bored of being able to defeat all of their paper opponents with little effort. Upon meeting Mario, they decide to sheathe their blades in order to level the playing field and experience the thrill of a genuine battle.
  • The Chessmaster: As much as they love engaging in battle, Scissors still takes steps achieve its goals by picking off Mario's party one-by-one and ambushing them with their paper creations. They even switch up the timing of their Final Cut attack mid-battle to catch Mario off-guard.
  • Died Standing Up: Unlike other members, Scissors stands motionless after losing. They topple over and then explode after Olivia touches their body.
  • The Dragon: According to their trophy, they're the top general for Olly.
  • Dub Personality Change: In the original Japanese, Scissors is much more Ax-Crazy and is more like a psychopathic child then a blood-thirsty duelist.
  • Faux Affably Evil: They give the impression of a gentleman who wishes to have a fair, respectful battle with Mario. Once Mario dodges their Final Cut, however, Scissors drops the façade and becomes dead serious.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: He's capable of inflicting this on Mario, resulting in a One-Hit Kill.
  • Interface Screw: Once their blade is out, they can start cutting out items from the battle ring.
  • Just Toying with Them: They keep their blades sheathed for the first half of the battle just to have some fun battling Mario for a bit. Once the blades come out, however, they become dead set on killing him.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Is dead serious in their mission to protect the streamer, and any who’s on the sharp side of their blade will be cut to pieces. This is reflected in-game as attacking the blade will one-shot you. They also don't say anything when beaten.
  • Let's Fight Like Gentlemen: They decide to give Mario a fair fight at first by hiding their deadly blade with a cover. They'll unsheathe it halfway through the fight, but Mario can break their cover early.
  • Mad Artist: Made the Handaconda and Cutout Soldiers to serve as their minions. Additionally making the monstrosity Paper Mistake Buzzy Beetle up from the faces of Bowser's minions.
  • Man of Kryptonite: A pair of razor-sharp scissors in a world made of paper are exactly as dangerous as you think. Any contact with the exposed scissor-blades is death: Mario will outright refuse to use 1,000-Fold Arms when the blades are drawn, and getting hit or jumping on them is instant death regardless of defenses. The second phase of the boss fight involves finding ways to target the handles.
  • Master Swordsman: Their scissor blades are treated similarly to swords, the blade cover like a sheath (complete with Audible Sharpness when they take it off), and even says "En garde" to Mario before their fight.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: Once Mario proves to be a legitimate threat, Scissors drops the polite attitude and attempts to One-Hit Kill him without mercy.
  • One-Hit Kill: You're paper, they're scissors. This means precisely what one would think it means. When their blades are unsheathed, so much as touching them will be instantly fatal. This is to say nothing of the new attack they start using every turn: Final Cut. This attack inflicts 999 damage and can't be blocked— but luckily, Mario's known for something else.
  • One-Man Army: They're a giant pair of scissors. Bowser's entire army is made of paper. Naturally, Scissors is able to slice the entire Koopa Troop to bits completely on their own. They can even One-Hit Kill Mario, who himself is an example of this trope.
  • Sadist: They manage to even surpass Hole Punch in the severity of what they do, slicing up their victims into little strips for fun, and will even cobble their remains together into a paper-mache nightmare, also for fun.
  • Scissors Cuts Rock: In a literal "paper breaks scissors" variant on this trope, Mario has to face off and defeat a literal pair of scissors that can easily One-Hit Kill him, by attacking the handles and avoiding their lethal attacks. note
  • Shear Menace: But of course.
  • Sheath Strike: They can attack with "Dull Edge" while their blade cover is still intact, in which they fly at Mario to ram him with it.
  • Smug Super: Scissors is extremely boastful and confident in their abilities. However, they are literal scissors in a world made of paper, so this arrogance is hardly unjustified.
  • The Sociopath: They show a complete disregard for the lives of Bowser and his minions and enjoy cutting up paper beings For the Evulz.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Out Come: All of the stats and defense boosters of Mario's equipment are temporarily turned off for this battle. Scissors's blades are a One-Hit KO no matter what Mario has equipped, because just like in the real world, scissors don't care what kind of equipment made from paper is being worn, it's still paper, and a piece of cake for a pair of scissors to cut. One of the Hammer Bros afterwards even marvels that "paper breaks scissors" for the first time.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute:
    • Of Boomer from Super Mario RPG, being a bladed warrior placed in charge of guarding Bowser’s Castle and having at least one way to inflict a One-Hit KO.
    • Also of Exor from the same game. Both are giant blades that take over Bowser's Castle, serve as the Big Bad's most powerful enforcers, and are played dead seriously.
  • The Spiny: Once the blades are unsheathed, jumping on them is a one-way ticket to bisection. Not even Iron Boots will be of any help, since using them will have Scissors kill you just as easily as if you hadn't.
  • The Usurper: They take over Bowser's Castle, hold Bowser himself captive, and turn the shredded remains of the Koopa King's minions into its own twisted attack dog.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Downplayed. They drop the gentleman attitude once Mario dodges their first "Final Cut", but continue fighting until the end with complete seriousness.
  • Worthy Opponent: They decide to face Mario in a fair fight with their blades sheathed after the plumber proves himself by dodging their initial attack and defeating the Paper Mistake Buzzy Beetle.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Will easily turn anyone they cut into scraps of paper, including Bowser Jr.

    Stapler (LATE-GAME UNMARKED SPOILERS)

Stapler, the Fanged Fastener

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/stapler_pmtok.png

A stapler who is responsible for turning many of Bowser's minions into Folded Soldiers for Olly. Is faced in Origami Castle as the Climax Boss of the game.

  • Angry Guard Dog: It behaves a lot like one when you fight it.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: The inside of its mouth is its most vulnerable spot. Usually, it's covered by its armored exterior, but it opens up when it runs out of staples and awaits a reload.
  • Bling-Bling-BANG!: Near the end of the fight, it switches to using gold staples as ammo.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: That mysterious shadow you saw in the very beginning of the game? It's the key to Olly's entire plan.
  • The Dragon: Whereas the other Stationary bosses are scattered across the world, Olly keeps this one close by. And for good reason: if Stapler goes down, all the Folded Soldiers will be free.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Its shadow is seen near the very beginning of the game stapling a Koopa. It’s not until near the end of the game for the Legion member to finally take the stage.
  • Family-Unfriendly Death: If you use the 1000 arms finisher, Mario finishes it off by snapping it in half. Now, keep in mind that it’s supposed to be like a dog...
  • Flat Character: Unlike the other members, this one doesn't speak. Instead, it's more of an attack dog than anything.
  • Foreshadowing: If Mario explores the Origami Craftsman's workshop he can find documentation about how to use tools to assist in Origami crafting. All of the documentation pertains to the specific stationery that have been fought prior to first accessing the workshop, however the Stapler is an outlier as it has its own entry despite not having been fought yet. This not only hints at its status as an upcoming boss battle, but that the Stapler has technically been encountered before (see Early-Bird Cameo). The description also foreshadows the fact that the Stapler is the cause of Folded Soldiers not unfolding, since it's used to ensure Origami integrity and prevent unfolding.
    • The documentation also serves as a sort of Red Herring since the player may assume the Stapler is the next boss battle, despite there being another two members of the Legion of Stationery before it.
  • Jawbreaker: Should you defeat it with Mario 1000-arms finisher, Mario will snap its jaw back.
  • Minor Major Character: It only appears towards the very end of the game for a single fight, but this rabid dog is the secret to creating the Folded Soldiers, whose conversion was thought irreversible — they couldn't be unfolded and saved because this thing had sealed them all in those forms.
  • Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: It's an Animate Inanimate Object stapler that acts like an Angry Guard Dog who shoots (and reloads) its staples like a gun.
  • The Paralyzer: Its attacks will staple Mario in place if it isn't blocked, denying him an action and leaving him open to Untag Wag for lots of damage.
  • Pre-Final Boss: Stapler is the last thing standing between Mario and King Olly.
  • Right-Hand Attack Dog: It is both an Angry Guard Dog and one of Olly's two Co-Dragons, the other being Scissors.
  • Tactical Suicide Boss: When it runs out of staples, it opens its jaw to reload, allowing Mario to hit its tender tongue for huge damage. It also uses <color> Staple Gun when Mario is on the outermost edge of the arena, wasting eight staples, as opposed to the two that Dog Tag and/or Untag Wag would use, in addition to the 1-4 Mario can smack out of it each turn; its special attack, Bite Barrage, also uses up to sixteen staples, so it stops to reload far more often. Therefore, it would be much tougher to beat if it never used Staple Gun. Probably justified due to its dog-like behavior making it act on instinct rather than intellect.
  • Turns Red: After certain HP thresholds, when it reloads, its staples turn red and eventually a sparkly gold, dealing two more damage with each upgrade.
  • Walking Spoiler: Its very existence as the 6th Legion of Stationery member makes it qualify, and then there's the fact that it's the reason the Folded Soldiers can't unfold themselves.

Others

    Ol' Grandsappy
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ol_grandsappy.png
Sweet Sap Loggins is back, baby!

The oldest tree in the Whispering Woods, Ol' Grandsappy was cut down to a stump by Toad loggers and has harbored a grudge against outsiders ever since. As a result, he refuses to let Mario and Olivia leave the forest, and only changes his mind when they use the Soul Seed to restore him to his youthful vigor.

  • Fountain of Youth: He's an aged tree stump that becomes a much younger and taller version of himself called Sweet Sap Loggins after being given the Soul Seed.
  • Gratuitous Disco Sequence: Giving the Soul Seed to Ol' Grandsappy has him burst into song before growing tall.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: His tree stump version is aged, tired, and passive. After being given the Soul Seed, he returns to his younger form as a tall, confident and handsome tree.
  • Punny Name: His name is a portmanteau of "grandpappy", a colloquialism for "grandfather", and "sap", as in tree sap.
  • The Trees Have Faces: He's first seen as a large stump with a mustachioed face, and is later regrown into a full tree with a younger face below his canopy.

    The Vellumentals
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pmtok_vellumental_idols.jpg
Four powerful beings representing fire, earth, water, and ice. By the time Mario and co. encounter them, they have been folded into origami monsters and must be fought in order for Olivia to learn their shapes and powers.
  • Attack the Tail: The Earth Vellumental can only be harmed by striking its exposed extremities, but is particularly vulnerable to blows against its weak, tender tail.
  • Balloon Belly: When the Water Vellumental absorbs water before using its powers, its torso swells to literally spherical proportions.
  • Bears Are Bad News: The Ice Vellumental resembles an immense polar bear, and is the most technically complex and challenging of the Vellumentals to beat.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Each had been folded prior to the game, making them hostile to anyone entering their temples.
  • Breath Weapon:
    • The Earth Vellumental can launch a barrage of sand and rock from its mouth. For unknown reasons, Olivia never attempts to use this ability when copying its form.
    • The Water Vellumental can release a powerful blast of water from its mouth.
    • The Fire Vellumental breathes fire, either in the form of fireballs (during its battle) or as a steady stream of flame (when used by Olivia).
    • The Ice Vellumental can exhale a stream of freezing air.
  • Cast from Hit Points: The Fire Vellumental's main attack involves it scattering its burning feathers over the battefield to create obstacles. However, each feather carries a bit of the Vellumental's health with it, and after a few rounds of doing this most of its health bar is going to become depleted.
  • Color-Coded Elements: Both the Vellumentals themselves and the magic circles associated with them are coded by color — green for Earth, blue for Water, red for Fire, and white for Ice.
  • Defeat Equals Friendship: Upon losing their origami forms, they change into books that teach Olivia how to fold into them, which subsequently allows her to use their power.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: The Earth Vellumental rules over solid earth, and attacks by unleashing a circular earthquake-like shockwave over the battle arena. When Olivia learns its form, she becomes capable of raising and lowering large columns of stone.
  • Elemental Embodiment: Each one embodies and controls an element.
  • Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors: Each Vellumental's power proves critical for overcoming the one that comes next.
    • The Earth Vellumental is the least direct — its power raises a column of earth that allows Mario to ride out the Water Vellumental's tidal wave.
    • The same wave attack is needed during the fight against the Fire Vellumental, as it will put out is fire and allow Mario to use the 1,000-Fold Arms attack on it without being burned.
    • The Fire Vellumental's breath weapon is necessary for melting the Ice Vellumental's frozen defense.
    • Finally, although this only becomes relevant when facing Olly, the Ice Vellumental is needed to freeze the Earth Vellumental solid before it can unleash its arena-wide seismic attack.
  • Eyeless Face: None of them have visible eyes. Olivia’s recreations of them gain her eyes as well as her crown to differentiate her from the originals. Olly's recreations of them likewise gain his eyes and crown, as well as his bangs.
  • The Four Gods: They are inspired by the mythological Four Gods with their powers and animals, albeit with the more traditional white tiger and metal element being replaced with a polar bear and ice.
  • Giant Animal Worship: A group of Koopa Troopas worships the Earth Vellumental, an immense tortoise, as their god.
  • An Ice Person: The Ice Vellumental can envelop itself in a shell of ice and freeze the entire battlefield solid. Outside of battle, Olivia can use its power to freeze water for Mario to cross over.
  • Magical Guide: Both straight and somewhat parodied, in that they turn into literal books (or "bibliofolds") upon defeat that teach Olivia how to fold into their origami forms.
  • Making a Splash: The Water Vellumental rules over liquid matter, and can summon and direct vortexes and large waves of water.
  • Nature Spirit: They’re meant to protect and provide for their home regions, but have fallen under outside control by the time of the game.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: The Water Vellumental is a massive, blue Western dragon with hydrokinetic powers and a fin at the end of its tail.
  • The Phoenix: The Fire Vellumental is a giant scarlet bird covered in burning feathers, and if Mario's main attack doesn't kill it in one go it will instantly recover all of its health.
  • Playing with Fire: The Fire Vellumental rules over fire and flame, and can release the fires burning its breast as great fiery gouts.
  • Punny Name: "Vellumental" is a pun on "vellum", an archaic term for parchment, and "elemental".
  • Sturdy and Steady Turtles: The Earth Vellumental is covered in impenetrable armor, which Mario's attacks will harmlessly bounce off of. To harm it, he needs to strike at its exposed limbs, head and especially tail. Notably, the attack learned from it is the only one to be defensive in nature — the others' powers focus directly on harming or depowering their targets, but the Earth Vellumental's ability is meant to allow Mario to ride out powerful attacks in safety. It will unleash a powerful shockwave after lifting Mario to safety, however.
  • Tactical Suicide Boss: The Fire Vellumental uses pieces of its body to create obstructions on the battlefield, and sacrifices health to do so. Defeating it is a matter of waiting until most of its feathers (and, thus, hit points) are off its body so you can finish it in one attack of the 1,000-Fold Arms. (If an Arms attack can't finish it in one go, it recalls all of its feathers and health and the fight basically starts over.)
  • Warm-Up Boss: The Earth Vellumental is the first boss you'll face, and its attacks are predictable and easy to guard against. What makes it even easier is if you create a path that leads to its tail, which forces all of its limbs to retract to its shell in one hit, right before you finish it off with the 1,000-Fold Arms.
  • Wreathed in Flames: The Fire Vellumental's feathers are constantly burning, making it impossible for Mario to harm it with physical attacks unless he douses its flame with the Water Vellumental's tidal wave.
