Medusa's at first, but ultimately Hades' forces. They seek nothing more than the destruction of the humans, and have overstepped their bounds.

"So hurry to me, Pit. I'll strip you of your wings and sever you from the heavens forever!"

Known for her serpentine hair and chilling gaze, Medusa's goal is nothing less than total domination.

  • Achilles' Heel: In the first game, the Three Sacred Treasures are the only things that can destroy her. Downplayed in Uprising, where Hades' reviving her weakened her enough for Pit to no longer need the Treasures.
  • Adaptational Badass: While Medusa was hardly a pushover in Classical Mythology, she wasn't a deity, let alone the cosmic-level threat she is here. In reality, she was just a beautiful maiden who was cursed into her more recognizable form by Athena as punishment for desecrating Athena's templenote .
  • Adaptation Expansion: In the western NES version of Kid Icarus' souped-up ending cutscene, Medusa's death is expanded to briefly reveal This was Her True Form for some extra tragedy.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: Her humanoid sprite was green in the first game.
  • Animal Motifs: Snakes, obviously. Not only is her hair made of living ones, but in Medusa's Revenge, she is shown to have serpentine pupils.
  • Animorphism: Medusa's Revenge has her turn into a snake before returning to her normal form to fight Pit.
  • Antagonist Title: The animated short Medusa's Revenge.
  • Arch-Enemy: As the original Big Bad, she is this to Palutena and Pit in the first game. In Uprising, this only applies during the first arc.
  • Arc Villain: She appears to be the Big Bad at first in Uprising, but it turns out she's only the villain for the first one-third of the whole game (Chapters 1-9, to be exact).
  • Back from the Dead: She is mysteriously brought back to life before the events of Uprising. At the end of the final level, she is resurrected again, and assists Pit against Hades because she is tired of him bringing her back to be his puppet.
  • Big Bad: In the first game, she's the main villain, but not in Uprising, where she's just an Arc Villain.
  • Body Horror: Her boss fight reveals she has a mouth on her hand which breathes poison gas. Later on, after going One-Winged Angel, she decapitates herself and sends her head flying after Pit.
  • Breath Weapon: The snakes in her hair can fire dark energy blasts from their mouths.
  • Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: She punches Hades in the head so hard it DECAPITATES him, but doing that breaks off the arm she did it with.
  • Cain and Abel: The Cain to Palutena's Abel. Medusa's ruthlessness to innocents forced Palutena to curse her into her monstrous form and banish her into exile.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: She's the Goddess of Darkness and makes no bones about it.
  • Casting a Shadow: As befits the Goddess of Darkness, she attacks mainly with petrifying beams or blasts of concentrated darkness.
  • Classic Villain: Representing Ambition and Wrath.
  • Composite Character: She has the appearance and petrifying abilities of the Gorgons in Greek mythology, but also shares traits with Persephone, the real Queen of the Underworld.
  • Cyclops: Her form at the end of Kid Icarus. She once again takes this form in Uprising after receiving enough damage.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Not as much as other characters in the game, but she has her moments.
  • Death Seeker: In Chapter 25, she attacks Hades because she's sick of him resurrecting her over and over as his puppet.
  • Detachment Combat: During the final phase of the fight in Uprising, she will take her head off and send it flying after Pit.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: In Uprising. After her defeat, the credits start scrolling, but are interrupted shortly after by Hades, to let know that the game is still far from over.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Pale white skin with black hair.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Palutena. They both had the same job, but when humans stopped worshiping them Medusa decided to destroy them and Palutena came to their aid.
  • Evil Is Bigger: Most of the gods are human-sized, with Palutena only being a little bit taller than Pit, and Viridi being shorter than him. Medusa, however, is absolutely massive. Judging by Pit's reaction, as well as her sprite in the first game, she wasn't always like this and it may be a result of her dark magic.
  • Excessive Evil Eyeshadow: Wears a lot of it.
  • Eye Beams: Her main method of attack during her fight.
  • Fallen Hero: She once ruled Skyworld alongside Palutena, but her heart turned evil and she began attacking humanity, forcing Palutena to exile her.
  • Faux Affably Evil: She's quite reserved and soft-spoken, but is far from kind.
  • Femme Fatalons: Her fingers are claws and she has no problem using them as weapons.
  • Final Boss: Of the first game.
  • Foe Romance Subtext: Quite a bit between her and Pit in Chapter 9.
Medusa: I can sense you getting closer, Pit.
Pit: There's nowhere left for you to run!
Medusa: Y'know, I'm very much looking forward to your arrival. I feel like Rapunzel waiting for her prince.
Pit: Sorry to break it to you, but those aren't exactly golden locks on your head.
Medusa: And you're not exactly a brave hero. Yet somehow the thought of our confrontation fills me with anticipation. So hurry to me, Pit. I'll strip you of your wings and sever you from the heavens forever.
    Pit: I don't think so!
    • Also, her first words to Dark Pit are "You're a go-getter. I like that." Makes you wonder if she just has a thing for angels.
  • Glamour Failure: Her AR idol description states that she uses magic to hide her true appearance, but is forced to use all her power while fighting Pit, causing the disguise to fail.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: In the anime short Medusa's Revenge, and man is it creepy.
  • God of Evil: One of them, anyway. Technically of darkness inherently, evil was her own choice.
  • Gorgeous Gorgon: Was beautiful before Palutena transformed her into a monster in the first game. Became sexy once more in Uprising. Until she was forced to put all her power into fighting Pit, leaving none to maintain her appearance.
  • Hot Goddess: Snake-hair aside, Medusa is fairly attractive until she goes One-Winged Angel.
  • Humans Are Bastards: Medusa developed a hatred for humanity and started drying up their crops and petrifying them, believing them to be ungrateful beings that only turn to the gods when they need them. This is why Palutena turned her into a hideous monster and banished her to the Underworld.
Medusa: Humans turn to the gods in times of need, then forget them in times of prosperity. They really are a fickle bunch.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Though downplayed, she's the only villain aside from the Chaos Kin to have no comedic elements (Hades is only played serious onscreen). The fact that she's one of the few characters in the game who doesn't break the fourth wall also helps.
  • Large and in Charge: She's Kaiju-sized, and by far the largest thing fought except Hades, who is as big as she is.
  • Last-Second Chance: Palutena gives Medusa one last chance to surrender by promising to spare her if she agrees to withdraw her forces and remain in her castle. It works as well as you'd expect.
  • Long-Range Fighter: In terms of fighting style, she prefers to keep her distance and bombard opponents with dark energy blasts, only using melee attacks when the opponent is close enough.
  • Loophole Abuse: In the second phase of the fight, Palutena uses a spell to chain Medusa's legs to the ground to prevent her from teleporting. Medusa circumvents this by decapitating herself and sending her head flying at Pit.
  • Moral Myopia: Resents Palutena for turning her into a monster and exiling her to the Underworld while conveniently ignoring the fact that the reason she did that in the first place was because she was attacking humanity.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Tries to pull this one on Palutena before Pit shuts her up. However, given Palutena's silence... she might be right.
  • Obviously Evil: Her pale skin, snake-hair and dark purple outfit are just a few of her characteristics that denounce her heinous personality.
  • One-Winged Angel: In Uprising, she transforms into a more traditional Gorgon and sends her head to chase after Pit.
  • Orcus on His Throne: She basically stays in her castle while her commanders do all the work.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: Her dress is rather sexy.
  • Poisonous Person: Has a mouth on her right hand that expels poison gas. She also has a reputation for poisoning rivers.
  • Progressively Prettier: Her original design was an ugly cycloptic face attached to a wall. Her Uprising redesign is much more attractive (at least until that glamour drops).
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Tries to pull one on Palutena, but Pit interrupts her.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: When she goes One-Winged Angel, her eyes fuse into a single red one.
  • Revenge: Her primary motivation. First against humans for ceasing their worship, then against Palutena for banishing her in the form of a hideous monster, then against Pit for killing her, then against Hades for using her as a pawn.
  • A Sinister Clue: She holds her Staff of Authority in her left hand, unlike Palutena who holds it in her right.
  • Sizeshifter: Medusa is usually seen in her gigantic form. However, when defeated, her true form is shown to be no taller than Palutena.
  • Slasher Smile: In Medusa's Revenge, especially while assaulting the towns.
  • Snakes Are Sexy: In Kid Icarus Uprising, she's quite pretty... until she goes One-Winged Angel, anyway...
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: Maintains a deep, feminine voice even as she muses on how a bloodbath would be the perfect way to celebrate her resurrection.
  • Staff of Authority: Like the other two main goddesses of Uprising.
  • The Stoic: Is remarkably calm, barely raising her voice even in dire situations, and never suffers a Villainous Breakdown.
  • Stationary Boss: In the first game. Phase two of her three-phase battle in Uprising; Palutena uses a spell to chain her feet to the floor so she'll stop using Teleport Spam. Medusa gets around this later by going One-Winged Angel and throwing her flying head at you.
  • Straw Nihilist: In Kid Icarus Uprising, she dismisses the importance of her own resurrection, stating that the manner in which she returned is irrelevant. Instead, what truly matters to her is the reason behind her resurgence, which is to seek revenge against Palutena and take delight in turning their beloved angel, Pit, into a lifeless statue, illustrating her sadistic pleasure in causing pain and destruction.
Medusa: Don't be ridiculous. Besides... It hardly matters how I returned. What matters is why. To exact revenge on you! Turning your little angel into stone is a nice first step.
  • Taken for Granite: You wouldn't be Medusa if you didn't do this. Strangely, the only time she uses this ability is during the anime short, and unlike the Medusa in classic Greek mythology, she doesn't use her gaze, but rather uses dark energy shot from her fingers.
  • Teleport Spam: For such a huge body, she seems to easily teleport all around during her boss fight in Uprising, at least until Palutena manages to chain her to the ground.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Hades revived her only as a distraction.
  • Villainous Rescue: In the final portion of the final chapter, Medusa comes out of nowhere and blocks Hades' attack on Pit. She claims that it was because she didn't want to be his puppet anymore, but it was still a huge shocker.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Palutena notes that Medusa seems weaker than she was previously. And this is indeed true, as Pit is able to beat her without the use of the Three Sacred Treasures, when in the first game, he could only defeat her with the Treasures equipped. Also, in the first game, Pit had to destroy several waves of enemies before he could get her down his bow shaft. In Kid Icarus Uprising, Medusa tries to use her magic to hold him back again, but Pit can simply push through it, forcing Medusa to actively flee from him. The Chaos Kin, by contrast, can stay out of Pit's line of fire indefinitely unless enough waves of enemies are destroyed, just like Medusa in the first game. This may be explained by Uprising's Medusa actually being one of Hades's soul constructs, implanted with Medusa's memories; she could be as strong or as weak as Hades designed her to be.

Hades

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hadesart.png

"Welcome to my underworld, Pitty Pat. You too, Pretty Palutena."

The true Lord of the Underworld. Other creatures, such as Medusa, are merely his pawns.

  • Adaptational Badass: Hades in Greek mythology was powerful, but nowhere at the level of this version, who poses a threat to the entire universe.
  • Alien Blood: In Chapter 23, when Dark Pit bursts out of his chest with the Lightning Chariot, Hades is shown to have purple and green blood.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: His skin is entirely purple, with a hint of red here and there.
  • Apple of Discord: Manages to make something that doesn't exist one, as he spreads the rumor about the Wish Seed to get the humans to kill each other.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: In the second phase of the fight, Pit must destroy the turrets on his body and cape as he works his way up, then fire at the swirling void on his cape. In the third phase, Pit must fire at the glowing wound on his chest left by the Lightning Chariot. In the fourth phase, Pit must fire at the jeweled core created when he regenerates his legs.
  • Atop a Mountain of Corpses: He wanted to get one started so he could fuel up on souls during the final battle, much to everyone's disgust.
  • Badass Armfold: When he's not doing a Slouch of Villainy, his arms are crossed as a show of his authority.
  • Badass Cape: It can even shoot lasers!
  • Bad Boss: In contrast to Palutena and Viridi, Hades does not care about his troops in the slightest. He even lets them fight without a commander, claiming they are too stupid to have actual brains, and later kills Medusa for interfering in the final battle.
  • Berserk Button: Judging from his reactions to Dark Pit vowing to stop him in chapter 22 and Medusa's betrayal in the final battle, he really hates having his rule questioned.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: While definitely comedic, he's far from harmless, shown especially during Chapter 23, where he destroys the Three Sacred Treasures and actually beats Pit in their first fight. And though Pit puts up a better fight with the Great Sacred Treasure, Hades still manages to claim the upper hand and destroy it. Had Medusa not pulled a Villainous Rescue, Hades would have killed Pit.
  • Blatant Lies:
    • Hades' Establishing Character Moment in Chapter 10—Hades explains his plans for the Wish Seed by spinning a yarn about granting his wish on behalf of a poor little orphan girl whose parents were recently killed (because Hades accidentally ran them over, being too busy doing his hair), by wishing for her parents' return to life, and then to make them all rich, and then to make them all royalty.
    • Not only is Hades' tone ripe with insincerity, the little picture show that accompanies his tale shows that in Hades' wish the girls' parents Came Back Wrong, Hades stakes his word as a god on the veracity of the story (Palutena doesn't buy it at all), and last of all, the Wish Seed is completely fake, a lie spread by Hades.
    • In Chapter 15, Pit can attempt to grab a certain treasure chest, which will drop him into a torture chamber. When Pit demands to know whether Hades set the chest out to bait him, Hades insists he "would never". For bonus points, the chest is a Mimicutie. (He claims credit for all the Mimicuties in the next chapter).
    • Again in Chapter 19:
Hades: My intentions are always honorable. You know that.
    • Zigzagged and downplayed during another moment in Chapter 19, where Hades only employs a half-truth. Like Viridi earlier, Hades blames Pit exclusively for all the trouble resulting from Palutena's Face–Heel Turnnote , but he says it immediately after betraying his own knowledge of Pit being turned into a ring, making it obvious he knows most if not all of the context, and therefore he's blaming only Pit is purely for the Troll factor.
    • Hades denying responsibility for the Aurum is not a lie, because the Aurum are the Outside-Context Villain and a threat to his goals as well. The fact that Pyrrhon is the only one who knows anything about the outside context is what makes him so suspicious.
  • Blow You Away: Transforms into a large tornado during the final battle.
  • Body Horror: Happens throughout his final battle with Pit. First, he gets bifurcated by the Great Sacred Treasure. Then, when charging his most powerful attack, his forehead opens to reveal a large, grotesque Third Eye and gets his head blown off when Medusa punches him.
  • Breath Weapon: Used to destroy the Three Sacred Treasures. Lampshaded by Pit when he says Hades has raunchy breath.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: He's a capable strategist and an equally capable fighter, but is extremely lazy and prefers to let others do his dirty work.
  • Bullet Hell: What his Final Boss fight is in a nutshell. Quite literally considering the first half of the fight takes place in the Underworld.
  • The Caligula: He's the ruler of the Underworld who sees causing destruction as a good time. Not the picture of mental health one would expect in a ruler.
  • Cannibalism Superpower: Can devour souls to increase his strength or for healing purposes. Though doing so disrupts the celestial balance of the world.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Depending on how he wants to annoy people that day, he'll openly brag about how destructive he is for the sake of getting a rise out of people. In Chapter 15, he mockingly refers to Pit and Palutena as "do-gooders."
  • Casanova Wannabe: He flirts with every goddess in the game, save Medusa, plus Pit. None of them reciprocate. He also claims to be after the Lightning Chariot because it's a "goddess magnet".
  • Casting a Shadow: Primarily attacks with blasts of dark energy.
  • The Chessmaster: Manipulates the Wish Seed plot to turn the humans against each other so he can harvest their souls.
  • Classic Villain: Representing greed, sloth, pride, wrath, and lust. Stands opposed to the angel Pit in every way. Full-blown Dark Is Evil in every way (using darkness as his main weapon, plus his general appearance), and is a Manipulative Bastard to the extreme. He spends a lot of the time manipulating events from the shadows. Leads Always Chaotic Evil hordes as part of his plan, and even eats souls just for the hell of it. During his final battle with Pit, he undergoes a Villainous Breakdown where his normally smug demeanor breaks down, right before his ultimate defeat by Pit.
  • Consummate Liar: Invoked; Hades spends his Establishing Character Moment telling Blatant Lies and then staking his honor as a god on their truth.
  • Control Freak: Has shades of it. As the ruler of the Underworld, Hades expects things to always go his way. When something happens that threatens to take away that control like, say, subordinates questioning or rebelling against him, it's one of the few moments when Hades will react with genuine rage and extreme violence.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: His first fight with Pit has him destroying the Three Sacred Treasures and mopping the floor with Pit.
  • Dark Is Evil: Has more in common with traditional depictions of Satan then the Greek Hades.
  • Deadpan Snarker: No matter what the situation, Hades always has a wisecrack ready.
  • Diabolical Mastermind: Orchestrated the entire plot of the game. While he does hold the title of "lord", he is breaking the laws of the gods, so he's still technically a criminal.
  • Dimension Lord: Palutena notes that Hades doesn't have a castle in the Underworld because as its true master, he can be anywhere and everywhere in it he wants.
  • Diving Kick: At the end of the first phase of the final battle, he performs one in a last-ditch attempt to destroy the Great Sacred Treasure, but Pit teleports away in time.
  • Eldritch Location: His stomach is revealed to be an alternate dimension according to its idol description.
  • Emergency Transformation: His regenerated lower body and head seem to be this, as the former has a noticeable weakpoint in the stomach area for Pit to shoot at while the latter looks almost ethereal in its flaming quality rather than solid. It's implied they're due to the time constraints and pressures of the fight itself, forcing Hades to sacrifice quality for battle-readiness.
  • Enemy Mine: He teams up with Palutena and Viridi to take down the Aurum. Of course, this is only because he wants to plunder Earth for himself.
  • Energy Ball: Has several variations. Some that fire trick shots if fired on, others that fire if Pit does nothing.
  • Energy Weapon: During the final phase of the fight.
  • Establishing Character Moment:
  • Everybody Hates Hades: Hades in Greek mythology was not a nice guy, but his worst crime was tricking Demeter's daughter into staying in the Underworld (and they actually ended up having one of the happiest and most stable marriages). This Hades, by comparison, seeks to kill humanity and harvest their souls for his realm.
  • Evil Brit: Speaks with a British accent.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: He claims that he sees no difference between reincarnation and devouring souls despite the fact that the latter action disrupts the balance. Though knowing him, he probably said that to mess with Pit.
  • Evil Is Bigger: Like Medusa, he's kaiju-sized while most of the other gods are roughly human-sized.
  • Evil Is Hammy: He's essentially an evil Tim Curry with godly powers.
  • Evil Is Petty: Despite Hades having much higher goals and ambitions, he just cannot resist opportunities to rub salt in his enemies' wounds, or just mess with them for a good laugh at their expense.
    • Despite working with the heroes to stop the Aurum, Hades still summons Mimicuties to impede Pit's progress just to screw with him.
    • Later, in Ch. 19, Hades sends Underworld troops to retrieve the Lightning Chariot just to get in Pit's way.
Viridi: You'd think the lord of the Underworld would be too busy for mischief making.
Hades: Oh, no. Making mischief is one of my principal responsibilities.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Thanks to Scott Bullock.
  • Evil Versus Oblivion: Hades is plenty willing to move his troops against the invading Aurum alongside Palutena's and Viridi's armies (even if he goes out of his way to drop extra obstacles in front of Pit). However, he takes a definite backseat when Palutena turns evil, only sending out troops to get in Pit's way.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Eats souls for the hell of it (and possibly a power boost), to say nothing of him devouring Pit. When the angel questions how he could punch through his stomach, Hades' response is to devour an assortment of Underworld enemies for him to deal with.
  • Eye Beams: Has several. The most powerful of them is one fired from the third eye on his forehead.
  • Facial Markings: He has red streaks going across his face, which gives off the vibe of a mask.
  • Fangs Are Evil: Has small fangs in his normal form. Subverted when he grows a new head, which lacks fangs.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Hades carries an air of good showmanship most of the time, presenting himself as an affable, though eccentric gentlemen, though he's prone to making backhanded compliments and snide remarks most of the time. He even teams up with the heroes to defeat the Aurum, though for his own reasons. Underneath it all, however, Hades is a total psychopath and when he lets the mask slip, he's outright terrifying. Despite that, however, he does have enough respect to congratulate Pit after he defeats him for good. This is even lampshaded by his trophy descriptions in Smash 4.
NA: The true ruler of the Underworld, he is so powerful that he easily resurrected Medusa for his own amusement—and to distract his foes. Full of arrogance, he does have a genuine sense of humor, though it mainly serves to conceal his callous disregard for life.
PAL: The true ruler of the Underworld Army. He resurrected Medusa, then sat back to watch the chaos unfold. His power and skill surpass those of all other gods, yet he seems very nonchalant. Once you get past his jokey exterior, though, it's clear how cruel and twisted he really is.
  • Final Boss: As often as other issues get in the way, he and Pit finally get to duke it out in the final chapter of the game.
  • Flaming Hair: His green-and-red hair flows in such a manner that it evokes imagery of fire, fittingly enough. And in his final form during the final battle, his entire head becomes coated in an otherworldly neon-blue fire.
  • Foil: Hades is very much the exact opposite of Pit: where Pit is kind, nice, and has a pure heart, Hades is malicious, petty, and a monstrous being of pure evil; where Pit represents order, good and hope, Hades represents evil and is the supreme leader of monstrous beings who are Always Chaotic Evil; while Pit is a angel who embodies the Light Is Good trope, Hades is a grotesque being who embodies the Dark Is Evil trope. Even the sense of humor of both characters could not be more different.
  • Foreshadowing: There are several hints in the beginning chapters that Hades is the true Big Bad of the game.
    • In Ch 6, Both Pit and Palutena note that despite the Mirror of Truth being destroyed, the Underworld Army is still getting new monsters. Later, it's revealed that Hades uses the souls of fallen humans to create his monsters.
    • In Ch 7, when Palutena asks Thanatos why he doesn't outrank Medusa as he's the God of Death, Thanatos makes weird Indian noises to dodge the question, implying that he knows that Medusa is Hades's pawn, but didn't want to reveal it.
    • In Ch 9, Medusa herself admits that she had no idea how she came back to life and that her memories are fuzzy at best. Palutena also notes that Medusa is weaker than she normally is. Then Hades reveals himself at the end of the chapter and explains that Medusa is just a soul smoothie with some memories for flavour.
  • For the Evulz: He himself admits that committing acts of evil is his idea of a good time.
  • Graceful Loser: Takes his defeat well even without considering his secret message.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Revealed to be the one orchestrated the first game's events, and brought Medusa back to life.
  • God of Evil: The God of the Underworld and the most malevolent villain in the game.
  • God of the Dead: Ruler of the underworld.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: During the final battle. It doesn't last very long.
  • Healing Factor: He manages to regenerate the entire lower half of his body after Pit slices him in half with the Great Sacred Treasure, as well as his head after Medusa punches it off.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: His first fight with Pit, which you could go into with or without the Sacred Treasures.
  • Hypocrite: He claims that humans are predictable due to their greed, yet it is his greed that causes all the suffering that happens in the game.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: His entire first fight with Pit (especially shown if you go in with the Three Sacred Treasures) has him taking zero damage from said weapons, and he then damages said ancient weapons to where they become unusable for the rest of the chapter (and for the remaining chapters past that point), forcing Pit to use the weapon he originally had equipped. The only major blow that Pit deals most likely agitated Hades instead of actually hurting him. Taken further in his final fight against Pit, who is now using the Great Sacred Treasure; Hades' true potential wasn't even achieved since he wasn't able to 'destroy the human settlements and consume their souls' to make himself stronger, literally meaning that Pit wasn't facing Hades at his actual peak performance.
  • Incoming Ham: All of his entrances into the conversation are this. Take Chapter 15, for instance:
Hades: [walking in on Pit getting fired on by the Aurum] MORNING, do-gooders!
  • Insane Troll Logic: As is fitting his trolling personality. He manages to take Pit's understandable horror at the idea of being defecated out of the Womb Level and somehow warp it into meaning that Pit hates life.
  • Invincible Villain: An odd example of this trope, as his invincibility is mostly due to tactics. Thanks to his Xanatos Gambit in Ch 10, most of the game is things going his way. Even with the appearance of other Arc Villains, no matter what happens, Hades would get more souls for his realm. And though he's one of the most powerful characters in the game, very little of the game is spent fighting him, since said Arc Villains take center stage as the most immediate threat to humanity and/or the world over him. It's not until Ch 23 that, with all the previous enemies either defeated or now allies, Pit can finally focus on the one who instigated almost all of this to happen. Although even then, he's shown to defeat the Three Sacred Treasures with a single attack, forcing them to get the Great Sacred Treasure from Dyntos, and even then, Pit almost loses, but is able to win thanks to Medusa coming back and punching Hades in the face.
  • It's All About Me: It's all about getting things his way, no matter who has to suffer in the process. Best shown by this statement during his introduction:
Hades: But she's old news, and old news bores me. We must look to the future and that future is me! The true leader of the Underworld! Next to me, little miss Medusa's going to look like a sweet, cuddly bunny!
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Teams up with the heroes to stop the Aurum solely because he wants to be the only one to plunder the Earth.
  • The Juggernaut: Blowing up his heart? Cutting him in half? Decapitating him? He no sells it all and trucks on. Only the complete destruction of his entire physical being will put him down. And even then, as The Stinger shows, he still exists, though he admits he probably can't come back to life.
  • Kick the Dog: He keeps trying to get Pit killed even when he's siding with him during the Aurum invasion. He also doesn't hesitate to rub in the fact that Pit will have to fight and potentially kill the Brainwashed and Crazy Palutena.
  • Kill All Humans: He uses their souls to produce more monsters and to do whatever else he wants with them.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Only when he or his projection is on-screen. When he's off-screen making much of the banter between Pit and the other gods, he is mostly comedic, but when he's on-screen, the atmosphere gets much more serious.
  • Lack of Empathy: He starts a war and has no remorse for killing millions of people, sees souls as nothing more than tools to be manipulated or empowering nourishment, and also laughs at Pit for being stuck in the ring. Summed up quite well in this exchange between himself and Viridi in chapter 22:
Viridi: Your disregard for life is just astounding. Could you be any more callous?
    Hades: Well, I could try.
  • Large and in Charge: Rivals Medusa as the largest boss in the game.
  • Large Ham: Hades has a tendency to be loud and hammy when he's talking.
  • Laughably Evil: He's a madman, but one can't help but find him funny simply because he's a massive troll of a god.
  • Leitmotif: A three-note ominous chant heard here. It gets remixed in the final battle.
  • Lightning Bruiser: As demonstrated in the final battle, he's surprisingly athletic for his size, able to keep up with the Great Sacred Treasure just by sprinting. He can fly at incredible speeds and is strong enough to punch through the ground (getting his arm stuck in the process).
Viridi: It's kinda like watching an elephant sprint.
  • The Man Behind the Man: In Uprising. (Not the entire series. As far as we know, anyways.)
  • Manipulative Bastard: He spreads a rumor about the Wish Seed to get humans to go to war and kill each other so he can take their souls. He manipulates Pit in order to kill the Phoenix in order to get the humans to kill each other even more.
  • More Dakka: Whoa nelly. He is literally a walking Bullet Hell. He has Eye Beams, huge lasers that he can fire from his forehead and each of his palms, thrown Deflector Shields that shoot out their own fireballs, trick bullets that fly straight into you if you shoot them by mistake, more trick bullets that fly back to hit you if you don't shoot them down... and to top it all off, his Devastation Ensemble allows him to grow all kinds of turrets out of just about any part of his clothing. Final Boss indeed.
  • The Nicknamer: As "Pitty-Pat" and "Pretty Palutena" can attest to.
  • Nigh-Invulnerable: Having his heart destroyed just irritates him, getting cut in half doesn't bother him, getting DECAPITATED barely slows him down, and even when Pit vaporizes him with the Great Sacred Treasure's Final Strike, The Stinger shows that he's still alive in some capacity. Put simply, Hades. Just. Won't. Die. Though he himself admits that he can't really come back to life to cause trouble.
  • Not Me This Time: Pulls this twice, first bringing up that the Aurum aren't his doing, and later states that the Chaos Kin doesn't work for him, and there's nothing seen to contradict his claim.
  • Not Quite Dead: His voice starts talking in The Stinger. He himself concedes that he probably can never come back to life, but is still able to talk to the player as a disembodied voice at least.
  • Not So Fast, Bucko: In chapter 9, while Pit and Palutena are celebrating Medusa's defeat, Hades cuts in at that moment, declaring, "Now, wait just a second."
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: Despite his flair for the dramatic and trollish personality, he is a very competent schemer and one of the most powerful characters in the game, second only to Dyntos. Literally, the only reason he lost was due to Medusa's intervention.
  • Off with His Head!: Medusa punches his head clean off, not that it slows him down as he's still got another.
  • The Omnipresent: Stated be "everywhere and anywhere" in the Underworld.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Hades is always evil and scary, but there are very few times he drops the levity of his hammy speech and constant jokes in favor of just being 100% dead serious, angry, and violent. First when Dark Pit threatens his dominion over the Underworld (enough so for Hades to smash a pillar in rage), and again during and after Medusa's defiance in the final battle. He also reacted with understandable anger when Dark Pit tore out of his insides on the Lightning Chariot, though even then he goofily chose to express his anger as "That wasn't very NICE!!". He also gets over it rather quickly.
  • Orcus on His Throne: He is VERY lazy, and the only time he gets up and does anything himself is when Pit comes to fight him.
  • Organ Autonomy: The Boss Battle of Chapter 23 is the "Heart of Hades", but when Pit destroys it it doesn't seem to do much of anything to Hades.
  • Perpetual Smiler: He usually has a cross of a Slasher Smile and a troll-face-style smile on his face. The minute he stops smiling is the minute things are about to get very bloody.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: When wearing his Devastation Ensemble which allows him to spawn weapons from any part of his body. If he were to go all out, there wouldn't be much of a world left to save. His AR Card even describes him as a literal weapon of mass destruction.
  • Physical God: Of the Underworld.
  • Plot-Irrelevant Villain: He's actually this for most of the game after Medusa is defeated and he introduces himself. Hades takes a backseat to Viridi, the Aurum, and the Chaos Kin when they emerge, with Hades himself having very little to do with the threat they each pose aside from being the Greater-Scope Villain. It isn't until they're out of the way that the story shifts to stopping Hades and the threat he poses.
  • Power Echoes: Whenever he speaks, it has this effect to his voice.
  • Powered Armor: His "Devastation Ensemble" is an odd example of this, being just a covering of light over parts of his regular outfit, but allowing him to spawn any and all manner of weaponry out of that light. He loses it after Pit bifurcates him with the Great Sacred Treasure.
  • Power Fist: Does not use one, but the End-All Arm seems to be patterned after him.
  • Power of the Void: During the third round of the fight, Hades creates vortexes on his hands to draw Pit in and hold him in place to fire more shots at him. The vortexes can be destroyed by Pit's own shots.
  • Practically Joker: Let's see. He has green hair, his primary color scheme is purple, his default expression is a permanent Slasher Smile, and he has a twisted sense of humor and loves to make sadistic jokes. It's not at all difficult to see more than a few similarities between him and the Clown Prince of Crime.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: He sides with Palutena and Viridi during the Aurum arc only because he wants to be the one to destroy humanity.
  • Pride: As hinted toward by his out-of-character moments, it seems that his only Berserk Button is the questioning of his power and control. Combine this with his motivation being the desire to play around with souls, and it indicates quite a power and control lust.
  • Punch Catch: Pulls one off against Medusa after her Villainous Rescue, which he follows up by ripping her arm clean off and finishing her off with a powerful uppercut.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Hades's skin color is predominantly purple, and he is indeed very powerful (as you should expect from someone with the title 'Lord of the Underworld.')
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Is the Top God of the Underworld and by far and away the most powerful. Though he prefers to rule from the shadows, he has no problem getting his hands dirty if he has to.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: In his first fight with Pit.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: And his character portraits show that they glow red when he loses his temper.
  • Satanic Archetype: He's much more evil than his original Greek Mythology counterpart and lives to cause as much misery as possible.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: While greed, sloth, pride, and wrath are his biggest vices, Hades, in a way, represents all of them sans envy. He has a greed and gluttony for souls, has a lust for power and control, is incredibly slothful and prefers to let others do his dirty work, is extremely arrogant and vain, and reacts with extreme wrath when threatened.
  • Slasher Smile: His default expression.
  • Slouch of Villainy: His defaut pose when he's not doing a Badass Armfold.
  • The Sociopath: Incredibly manipulative with tons of charisma, but has no empathy for anything but himself. To him, everything else is either a controllable pawn or a toy he can play with until it breaks, and he won't let anything that can't be controlled exist.
  • Soul Power: He can use souls for a variety of purposes such as regenerating lost limbs or reviving fallen allies. A major plot point is that the Underworld Monsters are created from the souls of fallen humans and multiple souls are needed to create one monster.
  • Spikes of Villainy: When wearing his Devastation Ensemble, he has three giant spikes protruding from his right shoulder.
  • Stepford Smiler: Type C. Wears an ever-present smile, but is a total psychopath.
  • The Stinger: If you wait five minutes after the credits, you get treated to Hades's disembodied voice shattering whatever remains of the fourth wall.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: One of Hades' nicknames for Dark Pit is "Pitooey", which was actually first thought up by Pit before Hades even arrived on the scene.
  • Super-Strength: Able to rip Medusa's arm clean off and kill her in a single uppercut, and it should be remembered she's as big as he is. Even before that, his punches and kicks could shatter the ground beneath his feet to make massive craters, and he was strong enough to shatter the Great Sacred Treasure to pieces by slamming his hands together on it once he got a surprise attack in.
  • Terms of Endangerment: Pitty Pat for Pit. Pretty Palutena, Professor Palutena, or Know-it-all Palutena. Pitooey for Dark Pit. Lovely Little Phosphora. Big Bad Medusa, or Little Miss Medusa. He's a fountain of these.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: His attitude towards the earth during the Aurum invasion. The earth his his to destroy and no one else's.
Hades: But whatever they are, they must be stopped. Earth is my flower to plunder, not theirs!
  • Third Eye: Has one that he opens up to fire his Wave-Motion Gun.
  • This Is a Drill: He just pops a drill out of his body in his attempt to destroy the Great Sacred Treasure.
  • Token Evil Teammate: During the Aurum arc. He commits his soldiers to fighting the Aurum off alongside the other gods, even helps Pit by destroying the massive shield protecting one of the Aurum fleet's motherships, but he makes no illusions about the fact that he's only doing this because only he has the right to exploit Earth, not some aliens.
  • Top God: He leads all of the gods of the underworld in Uprising, including Medusa, Thanatos, and Pandora.
  • Troll:
    • Hades taunts, insults, nicknames, and generally screws with basically everyone.
    • Once Hades finds Pit in his Womb Level he takes the opportunity to subject the angel to endless psychological torment—grossing him out at every opportunity, deconstructing his supposed morals, and sending him grind rails that lead to Bottomless Pits.
  • Vacuum Mouth: Used to swallow Pit whole in Chapter 23.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: While the game is more Crapsaccharine than Saccharine due to the setting and nature of the game, it still is quite lighthearted. Hades on the other hand, is the God of Evil who seeks to destroy humanity to harvest their souls for his own greed. Laughably Evil moments aside, Hades is one of the more darker villains of the game.
  • Villain Has a Point: When Pit tells him that eating souls is wrong since it removes them from the cycle of Reincarnation, Hades asks him how the Cessation of Existence when a soul is consumed is any different from the Death of Personality a soul undergoes when it's reincarnated. Pit doesn't actually have an answer to this beyond just repeating "eating souls is wrong!"
  • Villain Respect: Downplayed during the final battle, when Hades stops being The Nicknamer and refers to Pit by his proper name, which is something he only does for the other gods. Once you get far enough in the final boss fight he even busts out his deadliest attack for Pit being such a great adversary.
  • Villain Reveals the Secret: Downplayed. Hades lets slip he knows about Pit somehow ending up in the ring during the penultimate story arc, indicating he knows more about what's happened than anyone else.
  • Villainous Breakdown: During his final battle with Pit. It's subtle, but it's there. At the beginning of the battle, he's his usual self. But as the fight wears on and Pit powers through everything he throws at him, his normally calm and smug demeanor starts to erode, which all comes to a head when Medusa attacks him, where he pretty much snaps and drops the polite facade altogether. However, by The Stinger, he's mostly back to his old self and even congratulates Pit on his victory.
  • Walking Spoiler: To such an extent that literally every single entry on his section was whited-out before advanced warning was given. In spite of being the villain for 64% of the game, nothing in promotional material prior to the game's release or even prior to his debut in the game itself indicated he even existed!
  • Wave-Motion Gun: His strongest attack during the final battle is a powerful laser he fires from a Third Eye on his forehead. It causes a Non-Standard Game Over if Pit fails to fill the gauge before he fires.
  • Wolverine Claws: One of his attacks in his first fight with Pit has him swiping his claws at Pit.
  • Womb Level: Level 23 is his digestive tract, which according to the Idol description is apparently an alternate dimension that looks more like what a pure biological version of Hell would probably look like.
  • Worthy Opponent: Appears to acknowledge Pit as one if The Stinger is any indication.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Medusa learns this the hard way.
  • Xanatos Gambit: If Pit kills the Phoenix, then Hades can start his war. If Pit spares the Phoenix, then the Phoenix will attack humanity. And from then on it doesn't matter who kills humans, whether it be themselves, his own forces, Viridi's forces, or even Palutena's forces when she's possessed by the Chaos Kin. Either way, he gets what he wants: souls.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Said almost verbatim to Medusa as he kills her.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: The only purpose he has for starting a war and sending the Underworld Army to massacre everyone is to amass a large collection of souls. (That, and according to Hades they taste delicious.)

Underworld Commanders

    Twinbellows the Ferocious
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/twinbellows.png
Click here to see his appearance in Kid Icarus

A devil dog with two heads. Its body is wrapped in fire and spits out bullets of magma energy.

  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: His strategy in the original Kid Icarus is to fire projectiles and advance (and occasionally jump). With enough Centurions, Pit can theoretically take him out before he reaches the other side of the room.
  • Breath Weapon: Can breath fire.
  • Bullfight Boss: In Uprising, if Pit manages to dodge his Charge Attack enough times, Twinbellows will eventually hit the wall and be stunned long enough for Pit to attack him.
  • Charge Attack: Twinbellows will attempt to ram Pit. On higher difficulties, it will spam this move repeatedly.
  • Expy: Of Cerberus from classical Greek Mythology as both are Hellhounds with multiple heads who serve as the guardian of the Underworld. Likely also of Orthrus, the two-headed brother of Cerberus.
  • Fireballs: Spits out fireballs.
  • Flaming Hair: His fur seems to be composed of fire.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: Has green glowing eyes.
  • Hellhound: He's the Guardian of the Underworld.
  • Meaningful Name: He has Twin heads and Bellows out fire. In Japanese, the name also works in a pun on Cerberus, his Classical Mythology counterpart.
  • Multiple Head Case: Has two heads. Hence the name.
  • Playing with Fire: His attacks in both the original and Uprising.
  • Starter Villain: In both of his apperances.
  • Tail Slap: In Uprising, one of his attacks is to smack Pit with his tail if he's behind him.
  • Warm-Up Boss: Caps off Chapter 1 of Uprising and takes less damage to defeat than most later bosses, though it's still a considerable threat on higher difficulty settings.
  • Wreathed in Flames: Its entire body in covered in the flames where fur should be.

    Hewdraw

Click here to see his appearance in Kid Icarus

Hewdraw (Blue Head): "Hello there!"
Hewdraw (Purple Head): "It's snack time!"
Hewdraw (Red Head): "Mm! What a tender little morsel!"

A massive serpent that serves as one of the Underworld Army's commanders. Originally it comprised of one head and came out of water, but now it has two more heads and takes to the sky.

  • Affably Evil: They're a kind bunch of dragons. One in particular (the violet middle head) is very polite to Pit, even when he's trying to eat him. There's also one of the possible death quotes at the end of chapter 3:
Hewdraw: Look how far you've come, Pit. I'm proud of you. (dies)
Pit: Huh. You don't usually meet such nice bosses.
  • Breath Weapon: From fireballs to laser beams.
  • Bullfight Boss: The Head of Hewdraw's main attack is to roar and charge at Pit. Pit can cancel the attack and stun it if he shoots the Head in the mouth enough times.
  • The Brute: Serves as this for the Underworld Army.
  • Carry a Big Stick: Does not use one, but the Hewdraw Club is patterned after him.
  • Dumb Muscle: Particularly the blue head.
  • Evil Brit: The violet head has a distinct British accent.
  • Expy: Of the Hydra from Greek Mythology, being serpentine monsters with multiple heads an incredible regenerative powers. However, their regenerative powers are somewhat inverted. While Hydra can regrow its heads if they are cut off, Hewdraw's heads are capable of acting independently if severed and can regrow new bodies given some time.
  • Flight: Somehow is able to fly despite not having any visible wings.
  • Giant Flyer: Larger than Pit, but can still keep themselves aloft.
  • Graceful Loser: When defeated, the purple Hewdraw head compliments Pit and tells him how proud he is.
  • Healing Factor: They can regrow a new torso in mere minutes.
  • I Cannot Self-Terminate: One of the heads says he wants someone to put him out of his misery when the three are bickering amongst each other.
  • Jerkass: The blue Hewdraw head expresses joy at the knowledge that Pit killed the other two by the time of their battle if he's the last one, and during the Air Battle is the one who most expresses contempt in his fellow heads by calling them "dead weight". The violet head is less so, admitting he never liked the others in the Air Battle and claiming Pit "saved the best for last" for their final battle if he's the last one, but never directly insulting them either.
  • Laughably Evil: Can be a riot due to their bickering. Even when separate, they provide some hilarious lines.
  • Multiple Endings: Determined by the order you defeat the heads in Uprising. The blue Hewdraw will scream that he's too pretty to die. The purple Hewdraw will compliment Pit before dying. And the red Hewdraw will attempt to say something, but will explode before he can.
  • Multiple Head Case: Has three heads that have their own distinct personality, causing them to constantly bicker and argue with each other. Their bickering can get so bad that their sentences become impossible to process as they talk over each other.
  • Nice Guy: The red Hewdraw head is the one that tries to get the other heads to stop bickering in front of Pit (though failing), is the only one to express anger at the other two heads being shot off, and has the most chummy pre-battle dialogue with Pit for the last fight.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: The red and left head is the nice one (being the one who tries to calm the other heads down in front of Pit and expresses anger at Pit shooting them off), the blue and right head is the mean one (being the one who openly insults the other heads and expresses joy at them dying), and the purple and middle head is fittingly the in-between (being somewhat insulting to the others, but also the only one who acknowledges Pit's strength before dying).
  • Our Dragons Are Different: A three-headed, talking dragon whose heads can act independently of the main body and each have their own distinct personality.
  • So Proud of You: The purple head says this after Pit beats him as "Hewdraw Reborn" in Uprising, noting how far he's come from the old days and implying that he's the "original" Hewdraw Pit fought before.
  • Suddenly Shouting: Hewdraw Reborn demonstrates this just before the fight regardless of which head forms it, emphasized by coinciding with a roar that isn't part of the voice acting.
Red Hewdraw Reborn: That's big talk, little FIRECRACKER!
Blue Hewdraw Reborn: Now I'm finally FREE!
Purple Hewdraw Reborn: Let's get down to BUSINESS!
  • Tactical Suicide Boss: Hewdraw Reborn would be a lot harder to fight against if he didn't keep spawning fireballs you can shoot to get him out of the water.
  • Tail Slap: Hewdraw Reborn can swipe its tail at Pit.
  • Talking Animal: A talking dragon.
  • Who Needs Their Whole Body?: Hewdraw's heads are capable of surviving on their own if they are decapitated.
  • Yandere: All of them when under the influence of Palutena's monster pheromones, but the purple head takes it the farthest.

    T(h)anatos, God of Death

Voiced by: Eiji Ito (JP), Danny Mann (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/thanatosart.png
Click here to see his appearance in Kid Icarus

"The extra H is for Hamazing!"

The God of Death. He's a bit on the crazy side.

  • Affably Evil: Really, working for the Underworld Army is the only thing that makes him evil. He's actually quite nice and personable, if not eccentric.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: Has dark green skin.
  • Antagonist Title: Thanatos Rising.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: As the God of Death, he gets perks like evil powers, health insurance... and free soda.
  • Ascended Extra: In the original game, he was just a snake that lived in Medusa's hair. Uprising reveals that he's the god of death, and a shapeshifter.
  • Battle Aura: In Chapter 14, he takes on Phosphora in the form of a "glow dragon"; unlike his other forms, it's a dragon-shaped aura that he uses to defend and attack rather than a complete transformation. Thanatos's true form is clearly visible in the dragon's head.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Though hammy and comedic, he's far from harmless. Case in point in Thanatos Rising where he effortlessly defeats a human army and takes control of one of their Trojan Horse Tanks, and almost manages to defeat Pit soon after.
  • Big Bad: Of the Thanatos Rising anime short.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: He is a very effective fighter, and is Medusa's second-in-command, but his lazy and rather carefree nature gets in the way of his job (i.e. sending Reaper subordinates while relaxing in the Sea-floor Palace.)
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He's utterly wacky, yet he's somehow Medusa's second-in-command. Pit and Palutena even Lampshade it.
Pit: How did this guy get to be Medusa's second-in-command?
    Palutena: Beats me. Seniority?
  • Butt-Monkey: To put it simply, even Pit shows no respect for him.
  • Camp: Possibly the campiest villain in the whole show.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Let's just get it out there: Thanatos is nuts.
  • Confusion Fu: His shapeshifting powers combined with his wackiness makes him very unpredictable in battle.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: A complete and utter wackjob, but he's far from harmless. In Ch 14, he was able to hold his own against Phosphora and though he lost, was able to weaken her enough for Pit to fight her. And in Thanatos Rising, he shows just how dangerous he can be when he pus his mind to it.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Has one on the right side of his mouth, but it's barely noticeable.
  • Death Is Cheap: As the God of Death, he gets special privileges like "health insurance," which apparently translates to easy resurrection.
  • The Dragon: He's Medusa's second in command and Hades' after he reveals himself. He even transforms into a literal dragon while fighting Phosphora.
  • Evil Versus Evil: Reappears in Chapter 14 to battle Phosphora only to be defeated. Though how evil Phosphora is is debatable.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Portrayed as this in Thanatos Rising. His politeness is a little less sincere and his jokes are more sardonic and a bit sadistic.
  • For the Evulz: In Thanatos Rising, he tries to destroy a human city for no other reason than pure amusement. Granted, he could have been harvesting souls for the Underworld, but he seemed to take a little too much enjoyment out of it.
  • Gag Lips: Has big, blue lips to go with his overall clown motif.
  • High-Speed Battle: Against Phosphora. He loses, but weakens her enough for Pit to fight her.
  • Large Ham: Lampshaded. According to Thanatos, the extra H in his name (previously Tanatos) stands for "Hamazing".
  • Large and in Charge: Not to the extend of Medusa or Hades, but he stands at an an impressive 330cm, or 10'10".
  • Laughably Evil: His childish personality makes him quite entertaining.
  • Made of Iron: Notably in that he takes quite a large amount of punishment in his appearances as an enemy whether his opponent is Pit or Phosphora. Against Pit, Thanatos fights the strongest fighter that Palutena has and continues fighting by alternating between different forms despite the continuous damage he sustains without slowing down. He then takes this even further when he fights Phosphora in Chapter 14 where his opponent is much faster than him and possibly just as powerful despite the the fact that he's a god and she isn't. To make up for a lack of speed to match, he appears to be absurdly durable as his fight against Phosphora lasts for nearly 80% of the entire air battle at the least and he just doesn't give up. Pit even comments that Thanatos is much faster than ever before and as it shows, the God of Death is able to keep pace with his opponent. In the end, the entire fight arguably worked out for Hades (being able to weaken the Forces of Nature by defeating their commander) since Thanatos can be revived by Hades, Phosphora is now at quite a disadvantage being heavily weakened since she has to retreat to recover. To put it forward, Thanatos fought Phosphora in an intense match where they both fought with everything they had and he was just about the only counter that Phosphora possibly had at that point and managed to inflict enough damage to make the Forces of Nature weak enough to be defeated. Pit would later fight Phosphora when she was still critically weakened and not even at her best and win due to that factor although Phosphora knew that she wouldn't have the best time.
  • Mad Hatter: Has definite shades of this. He even sounds like Disney's version of him.
  • Monster Clown: His appearance in Uprising invokes this.
  • Morphic Resonance: His forms has his green coloring and scarfs from his normal form.
  • Obviously Evil: What, were you expecting the God of Death to look nice?
  • Poisonous Person: His attacks in his normal form can inflict poison status.
  • Power Floats: He's never seen walking.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: He's very childish, easily offended, and overly sensitive, and when things don't go his way, he throws tantrums.
  • Rage Quit: He invokes this trope in Thanatos Rising, after Pit destroys his hijacked Trojan Horse Tank, saving a human village that the Underworld Army would've destroyed for soul collection.
  • Scaled Up: During his fight against the Forces of Nature, he takes the form of a Glow Dragon.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Wears a large scarf.
  • Spell My Name With An S: He changed his name from Tanatos to Thanatos, because the extra H is, well, you already know by now.
  • Tactical Suicide Boss: Thanatos would be unstoppable in his urn form if he didn't spit out skulls for Pit to knock back at him.
  • Top-Heavy Guy: His torso is larger than his legs. That's probably why he floats around.
  • Villain Ball: In Thanatos Rising, instead of killing Pit when he had him trapped, he decides to toy with him by throwing bombs at him. Pit beats him by shooting at the cogs, bringing the Trojan Horse Tank down on his head.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: His main superpower and the reason why he was able to turn himself into a snake in the first game. During his battle in Uprising, he transforms into: a giant foot, a bat that can split into swarms of smaller bats, a matryoshka doll, a sword and spears, and a jar.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Seems to be wearing overalls.
  • Why Don't Ya Just Shoot Him?: What ultimately leads to his defeat in Thanatos Rising.
  • The Worf Effect: When Hades revives him to fight against the Forces of Nature, Thanatos is defeated by Phosphora. He does, however, weaken Phosphora significantly.

    Pandora, Goddess of Calamity

"Do I look like a strategy guide? In case you haven't noticed...THIS ISN'T THE ASK AUNTIE PANDORA HOUR."

The Goddess of Calamity. She likes to confuse whoever tries to enter her realm. She is allied with Medusa.

  • Affably Evil: While she's not actually affable in her standard form, she Took a Level in Kindness upon turning into Amazon Pandora, and becomes The Tease who shows little to none of the frustration she had as a fiery blob.
  • And I Must Scream: If the dialogue in Ch. 22 is any indication, she was trapped in Dark Pit's wings for three years and fully aware the entire time, though she seems more concerned that Dark Pit took her powers than she was about being trapped in his wings.
  • Arch-Enemy: Found one in Dark Pit.
  • Ascended Extra: Was the easiest Boss (and boss of the next-to-last level) in the original Kid Icarus. Now plays a far bigger role in Uprising.
  • Badass Finger Snap: The way she activates some of her spells as Amazon Pandora.
  • Batman Gambit: Lured Pit to her Labyrinth of Deceit on the gambit he'd be more interested in destroying her mirror than killing her, to use him to create Dark Pit. Too bad her plan blew up in her face when Dark Pit rebels against her.
  • Bishōnen Line: In Uprising, she eventually assumes a humanoid form called Amazon Pandora.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Like Thanatos, she's very eccentric and a very capable fighter.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: In Uprising, her eccentric behavior is what makes her level so confusing.
  • Cool Sword: As Amazon Pandora, she wields a blue longsword.
  • Cute Bruiser: As Amazon Pandora, she's definitely easy on the eyes. But she's more than just a pretty face.
  • Dark Action Girl: She is a female villain who is fought four times over the course of the series (and that's not even counting two additional rematches in the bonus Boss Rush mode in Uprising), which is more than any other boss in the series.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She always has a snappy comment, however sometimes she yells comments rather than deliver them deadpan.
  • The Disembodied: Amazon Pandora's idol states that she was one of the Underworld's greatest warriors, but had an accident that cost her her body, forcing Pandora to take the form of a pure manifestation of her will.
  • Fangs Are Evil: In spirit form, she has pronounced fangs and jagged teeth that fit her appearance as a villain.
  • Faux Affably Evil: She seems jaded and sarcastic at first glance, brushing aside things with a nonchalant attitude. But as her idol says, it's all an act and she revels in trickery and deception.
  • The Fighting Narcissist: As Amazon Pandora. One of the first things she does after regaining her original form is to show off her new body. Doesn't stop her from fighting Dark Pit though.
  • Floating Mask: Her original design was reminiscent of a sentient mask.
  • God of Evil: The Goddess of Calamity and Disasters.
  • Great Gazoo: She isn't called the Goddess of Calamity for nothing.
  • Heart Beat-Down: Can fire heart-shaped projectiles and create heart-shaped barriers as Amazon Pandora.
  • Hot God: Not that one would expect looking at her spirit form, but as Amazon Pandora, she's a really beautiful and sexy young woman.
  • I Surrender, Suckers: Pulls this in both her fights.
    • In her fight with Pit, after taking damage, she seemingly surrenders and allows Pit to destroy the Mirror of Truth. In reality, it was a Batman Gambit to create Dark Pit. Sadly for her, her plan quickly falls apart when Dark Pit turns on her.
    • During her fight with Dark Pit, after taking damage, she falls to the ground. However it's a trick as after a few seconds, she'll get to her feet and fire off heart-shaped energy blasts.
Pandora: You got me... ...Just kidding!
  • Laughably Evil: Only Thanatos and Hades can rival her for the amount of snark and jokes coming out of her mouth.
Pit: What's an Exo Tank doing here anyway?
Pandora: I wanted to get my driver's license. So I whipped up a little parking lot to practice in. But then it hit me. How am I supposed to steer without hands?
Pit: How'd you build a parking lot without hands?
    Pandora: Hard work and determination.
  • Mad Bomber: Can materialize bombs during her fights. Pit and Dark Pit can knock them back at her for extra damage, but it's much harder with Amazon Pandora since she's smaller, constantly warping around, and will often teleport herself right next to a bomb to kick it at Dark Pit.
  • Magic Knight: As Amazon Pandora. She fights with a sword and various deceptive magic.
  • Master Swordsman: As Amazon Pandora, she is quite skilled with a sword.
  • Ms. Fanservice: As Amazon Pandora, she is a Hot Goddess who enjoys Showing Off the New Body.
  • Nightmare Face: In her spirit form, her eyes and mouth are huge and somewhat demonic-looking. Quite a fair cry from her cute and pretty face as Amazon Pandora.
  • Playing with Fire: In her spirit form, she attacks by spitting out fireballs.
  • Power Floats: In both of her forms. Justified in her spirit form, as she has no legs.
  • Recurring Boss: You fight with her twice in Uprising with Pit and one more time as Dark Pit in both forms.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: As Amazon Pandora, her eyes go from purple to red.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Goes on one against Dark Pit once she's revived from the Rewind Spring.
  • Sadly Mythcharacterized: Granted, Kid Icarus is only loosely inspired by Classical Mythology, but the original Pandora was a human woman whose curiosity led her to opening a vase (commonly referred to as Pandora's Box) that unleashed misery upon humanity. The Kid Icarus Pandora is a malicious Goddess of Calamity, Disasters, and Deceit. In the NES game, the only thing they had in common was their name. Uprising does contain one minor reference to the original myth and one nod: she spawns fake treasure chests called "Pandora's Boxes" that release a barrage of attacks if Dark Pit attempts to open them, and Amazon Pandora is human shaped. Still, Amazon Pandora has more in common with Aphrodite (the Goddess of Love and Beauty) than Pandora, being a beautiful goddess whose attacks are heart-themed.
  • Sanity Strengthening: Discussed by her at the start of Chapter 5's ground section, where she claims she is now trying to have a more balanced mentality. Her idol states that while she sounds jaded, it's just an act.
  • Showing Off the New Body: The first thing she says when she transforms into Amazon Pandora? "Eat your hearts out, ladies!"
  • Straw Nihilist: Implied by this comment, assuming she wasn't just putting on a show:
Pandora: What's the point of getting worked up? What's the point of anything, really?
  • Sword Beam: As Amazon Pandora, she can fire five of these from her sword.
  • Technicolor Fire: She seems to be made of blue fire in her redesign. But it turns into red fire when she's angry.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Upon her transformation into Amazon Pandora, she goes from Faux Affably Evil to outright Affably Evil, as her grudges seem to be abandoned, and she goes from dry and sarcastic to bubbly and flirtatious, content with being in a proper body for once.
  • Turns Red: Literally. When angered, her spirit form goes from blue to red.
  • Trap Master: As Amazon Pandora, she can create traps that will hold Dark Pit in place and prevent him from running away from her attacks. He can still dodge them though.
  • "Uh-Oh" Eyes: An iconic feature of her fireball form. Her eyes appear blank white from a distance, but if you examine her closely you can see she actually has Wide Eyes and Shrunken Irises. She looks like she's perpetually on the urge of snapping.
  • Uncertain Doom: It's unclear if Dark Pit killed her again at the climax of Ch. 22. Given her last words were a simple painful "OW!" and the fact that Dark Pit is still flightless at the end and thus didn't steal back her powers, there's ample evidence to suggest she simply fled the Rewind Spring after the battle's conclusion, but no one gives her another mention for the rest of the game.
  • Wolverine Claws: Does not use any, but the Pandora claws are patterned after her.

    Dark Lord Gaol

Dark Lord Gaol

Voiced by: Junko Minagawa (JP), Kari Wahlgren (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/uprising_gaol_e3_2011_press_kit.png

"Ah, Palutena's little messenger boy. And Magnus, it's always a pleasure!"

A warlord aligned with Medusa. In the past, she (yes, she) was a childhood friend of Magnus, and the two fought monsters together as part of the same mercenary group.

  • All There in the Manual: According to her Idol, she volunteered to spy on the Underworld Army, but was captured and forced to wear the cursed armor of a dark lord, making her into nothing more than a slave to the very evil she had fought against. But then it seems she has gained complete control over the cursed armor when you fight her and Magnus, complete with a total removal of the distorted, evil voice. It appears that Pit and Magnus quite literally beat the curse out of her (or that Dyntos just made her a new set).
  • Barrier Warrior: She uses a barrier that will reflect ranged attacks.
  • Casting a Shadow: She attacks with various blasts of dark energy.
  • Clothes Make the Superman: While it's hinted she's a skilled mercenary given her past with Magnus, it's because of the armor granting her many magical abilities that make her so dangerous in a fight.
  • Cool Sword: The Gaol Blade is modeled after her.
  • Demonic Possession: The dark lord's armor took control over her after the Underworld Army forced her to wear it.
  • Dual Boss: With Magnus late-game, a textbook example of Sword and Sorcerer Guys Smash, Girls Shoot.
  • Dub Name Change: From "Gainas" in the Japanese version.
  • Energy Weapon: The dark lord can do a sweeping laser attack.
  • Evil Sorcerer: Most of her attacks involve using powerful magical abilities, though she loses the 'evil' part after she returns as a Dual Boss.
  • Expy:
    • Magnus and Gaol had a similar affair to Guts and Griffith's in Berserk. Magnus has a similar personality, looks, occupation, fighting style and weapon to Guts so the comparison between Gaol and Griffith AKA Femto is a pretty easy one, but to play on the players' expectations, Gaol is quite different to Griffith and more closely resembles Casca.
    • Gaol's true identity resembles Samus'.
  • Flunky Boss: Gaol can summon underworld monsters while a part of the Underworld Army.
  • Foreshadowing: "Gaol" sounds a bit like "gal," doesn't it? Also, throughout the level Magnus only refers to her by name, never by any pronouns that would give away her gender.
  • "Get Back Here!" Boss: She's quite difficult to pin down as Gaol constantly moves around the room, though thankfully Magnus can provide a decent distraction.
  • Horned Humanoid: When wearing the armor.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Is quite fast, despite the heavy armor, and is strong enough to send Magnus and Pit flying with a spin of the cape.
  • Maou the Demon King: Gaol is a Parody of this, being merely the second boss (the trope is lost in the West, where maou was rendered "Dark Lord").
  • Meaningful Name: Her name is another word for "Prison" and an alternate spelling of the word "Jail", hinting at her being imprisoned in the armor. It also spells gal if you take out the o.
  • Parody: invoked Word of God states that she (while possessed by the armor) is a parody of RPG final bosses.
  • Samus Is a Girl: Her real face even looks like Samus's! It's even more fitting considering she's inside a set of armor. Interestingly, in-universe, Pit seems to only be surprised that she was human.
  • She Is the King: Her title is "Dark Lord", adding to the surprise.
  • Spikes of Villainy: Even better, the armor itself is cursed and turned her evil when she put it on.
  • Tin Tyrant: She's decked out in a large suit of dark-purple, red, and green armor with spikes and horns all over it.
  • Token Human: Out of the Underworld Army.
  • Use Your Head: An effective tactic when you have a helmet with horns on it.
  • Voice of the Legion: Has this when first seen. Subverted by her second appearance as it was a voice syntheiser to disguise that she was a woman. Her voice is more feminine, but still slightly distorted.

    The Great Reaper
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/great_reaper.png
The leader of the Reapers and the boss of the Reaper's Fortress, the Great Reaper apparently sends its subordinates to collect the souls of the humans fighting in the war.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: His head and toes, and more obviously the crack in his skull during the last leg of the fight.
  • Dub Name Change: From the considerably less threatening "Big Reaper" in the Japanese version.
  • Eye Beams: Can fire these at Pit.
  • Flunky Boss: He does summon Reapettes, but only if he lands a hit on Pit with his Eye Beams.
  • King Mook: Essentially a far bigger, far stronger version of the normal Reaper.
  • Mighty Glacier: Hits like a tank, but moves as slowly as one too.
  • Power Tattoo: Does not use one, but the Great Reaper Palm is patterned after him.
  • Shockwave Stomp: Two of its attacks, where it either just takes a step, or it starts jumping into air to crash back onto the ground.
  • Sickly Green Glow: Its eyes and its necklace.
  • Sinister Scythe: It's as big as its body, and it can even fire Sword Beams out of it.
  • Spin Attack: If Pit is on the second floor, the Great Reaper can spin its body around with its scythe in an effort to hit him. As it gets more damaged, it will start spinning faster and longer.
  • Villains Out Shopping: His idol states that in his free time, he actually shinks himself to normal size to take strolls in his fortress. When he is first seen, he actually looks like a regular reaper, then grows to his giant size after noticing Pit.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: He was an elder Reaper that gained his power by eating a large amount of souls.

    The Underworld Gatekeeper

The Underworld Gatekeeper

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/underworld_gatekeeper.png

A powerful robotic member of the Underworld Forces, that, true to its name, guards the entrance to Medusa's castle in the Underworld.

  • Beam Spam: It fires orange orbs, blue beams, homing red projectiles, massive lasers, rings of electricity, and green circular barriers.
  • Gate Guardian: It guards the entrance to Medusa's Castle in the Underworld.
  • Humongous Mecha: It's a large mech bristling with weapons designed to guard Medusa.
  • Immune to Bullets: While its weapon systems can be disabled with enough damage, its body is immune to Pit's weapons, and is only taken out when Dark Pit kicks its head.
  • Leitmotif: A simple, yet fast-paced and chaotic melody by Motoi Sakuraba.
  • Light Is Not Good: Is the most vibrant colored member of the Underworld.
  • Ramming Always Works: It can fold up and shoot off at high speeds to ram at Pit.

    Soul-Eating Monster
A massive eel-like creature that patrols the City of Souls. As the name suggests, it feasts on any unfortunate soul that crosses its path, though it's not afraid to try and chomp on an angel.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: Dark Pit needs to destroy the bulb-like growths on its back before he can shoot it in the mouth and kill it.
  • Extra Eyes: It has multiple black eyes on its face like a spider.
  • More Teeth than the Osmond Family: It has large, saw-blade-like teeth in its mouth.
  • Slippery as an Eel: It resembles a giant gulper eel.
  • Soul Eating: It's in the name. However, it's perfectly willing to try and chomp down on Dark Pit when they cross paths.
  • Team Pet: Hades affectionately refers to it as "Chomper" and calls it "adorable."
  • Time-Limit Boss: If Dark Pit doesn't kill it after a certain amount of time, it will stop attacking him and just leave, apparently in search of easier prey.

    Heart of Hades

Heart of Hades

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hades_heartapng.png

An odd entity representing Hades's heart, existing within Hades.

  • Armless Biped: Though it does seem to have two blood vessel-like tentacles, it never uses them for anything or even seems to control them at all.
  • Celestial Body: Its body coloration looks like a night sky, deep blue with small white "stars". Has an Unmoving Plaid effect to it, as well.
  • Chasing Your Tail: The design of the stage regularly invokes this, regardless of who's attacking.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Pit can't help but find it adorable during the boss battle.
  • "Get Back Here!" Boss: When it's not directly attacking Pit, it's mindlessly speeding around its maze while sending exploding clones at him.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Moves surprisingly fast considering its rather stubby legs, especially when it Turns Red.
  • Made of Explodium: Its clones. The heart itself also explodes upon defeat
  • Me's a Crowd: Its most potent ability is to create exploding clones of itself.
  • Organ Autonomy: It's a heart that seems to act independently of Hades himself, and Pit's destroying it doesn't seem to hinder Hades much.
  • Throw Down the Bomblet: Its main method of attack is to drop bombs behind it for Pit to run into, or to make exploding clones of itself. This changes when it Turns Red, at which point it will try to bum-rush Pit with a powerful charge.
  • Turns Red: Goes on a rampage towards Pit each time it receives enough damage.
  • Visual Pun: When you deal enough damage in one bout, it Turns Red and starts speeding up... which means that you got Hades' Heart racing.

Underworld Soldiers

    Eggplant Wizards
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eggplant_wizard.png
Click here to see its appearance in Kid Icarus
These enemies place a spell on Pit to turn him into an eggplant.
  • Ascended Extra: Was just another Underworld mook in the original. Due to his legendary annoying ability, he not only landed a main cast role in Captain N: The Game Master (unlike Medusa, who was only in one episode as a minor villain), but also made it to the front cover Of Myths And Monsters.
  • Black Magic: Laugh all you want, but being turned into an Eggplant is still considered a Curse.
  • Cyclops: Each Eggplant Wizard only has a single eye.
  • Demoted to Extra: In Uprising, he's back to being just an Elite Mook, only now with his eggplant attacks considerably nerfed. He still manages to gain some commercial representation through the trailers, however.
  • Four-Fingered Hands: In this case, it is another hint eggplant wizards are not human, as if the fact they are purple and have no noses was not enough.
  • Gag Lips: It gets to the point that its lips make up the near entirety of its head's lower half.
  • Nerf:
    • His infamous spell is a bit less dangerous in Uprising, as it simply wears off after a while rather than forcing Pit to frantically run to a hospital. Justified, though, as Palutena is watching over Pit and uses her powers to shorten the time Pit is an eggplant. But to sort of counter this loss, the spell now acts like a grenade, turning Pit into an eggplant if caught in the radius and also doubling as a sort of pseudo-Poison effect.
    • Eggplant Wizards were frequently encountered in pairs during the first game, but in Uprising they are usually solitary. This is also made up for, slightly, by the fact the wizards now move much faster, more actively target Pit, and can jump.

    Reapers and Reapettes

Reapers and Reapettes

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/reapette_&_reaper_spirit.png
Click here to see their appearance in Kid Icarus
Skeletal residents of the Underworld that lead souls of the dead to their resting place. They are easily excitable and summon small versions of themselves, called Reapettes, when an opponent is spotted.
  • Always Chaotic Evil: Justified, their boss is Thanatos, who is given "evil powers" as part of his job description. A non evil Reaper would not be getting any work.
  • Background Music Override: A sign that one has seen Pit, and the music will not change back until all Reapers that have seen him calm down, or are defeated.
  • Dark Is Evil: While it's their job to lead souls to the underworld, Palutena notes that they're still evil and crazy.
  • Elite Mook: In the first game's non-fortress levels. They take more hits to defeat than anything else around and fill the air with additional enemies until dealt with while actively ramming Pit, although they can be avoided. Still serve this role for the Underworld forces in Uprising, although downplayed their, as they can be found in the same areas as the wizards, players also have to worry about the even tougher Clubberskulls and Mimicuties and they can be more easily avoided.
  • Enemy Summoner: They charge at Pit shortly after summoning Reapettes after him. They can also summon Ornes in later levels.
  • The Grim Reaper: Although in this series there are multiple Reapers working for the god of death.
  • Psychopomp: Their job is to guide souls of the departed to the Underworld. When there's an excess of souls for Hades to make more monsters, revive fallen commanders, and/or eat them, they can't handle them all.
  • Sinister Scythe: It is just for show prior to Kid Icarus Uprising, but they do swipe at Pit with it once making the jump to 3D.
  • Sissy Villain: In the original game, they seem to blow a total hissy fit and summon their Reapettes by kicking and screaming frantically.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Made more dangerous in Uprising, as not only do they actively attack Pit now, but they take a lot of hits to bring down and they hit like a truck. Their Reapettes can also paralyze enemies on contact, making it easier for the Reapers to attack them.
  • Villains Out Shopping: Have their own specialized hot-spring for their fortress.
  • Workaholic: They get overwhelmed by the excess of souls that Hades and the Underworld Army have gained from all of the game's conflicts, causing them to go into overtime, which Hades himself lampshades during Chapter 22.

    Tempura Wizard
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tempura_wizard.png
An underworld monster that has shrimp tempura for a head and sits in a rice bowl. He can turn his enemies into tempura with his spells as well, chasing them and, if caught, eating them.
  • Bizarre Alien Biology: Has a single eye on his tempura head, that is somehow replaced by a mouth when he starts chasing his victims.
  • Deep-Fried Whatever: Justified, as it is based off of a real world dish, albeit one that is a little out of place in the Greece of antiquity...
  • Ethnic Magician: Everything besides his non human head suggests so in a series full of light skinned characters. Although shrimp catching and rice farming do lend themselves to tanning, the underworld doesn't get its light from the sun...
  • The Rival: To the Eggplant Wizard.
  • Scary Black Man: His head aside, the Tempura Wizard has a brown skin-tone. It's even darker than Magnus.
  • Slouch of Villainy: When not chasing angels-turned-tempura, he casts spells while reclining on a rice bowl.
  • Spikes of Villainy: Its rice bowl has horns, for some reason.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Subverted. It looks like he'd be one to the Eggplant Wizard, but is in fact quite a bit worse: being turned into a tempura tires you out instantly upon trying to run, and letting him catch and eat you is a One-Hit Kill. On the other hand, tempura wizards cannot match the newfound agility of their eggplant rivals.
  • To Serve Man: In a fashion; he turns his victims into shrimp tempura before eating, and Pit isn't entirely human to begin with. That doesn't necessarily mean he hasn't done this with humans before, though.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Take a guess.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: While wearing tempura pants, naturally.

    Others
  • Action Bomb: The Minoses become this in Uprising, exploding and shooting their spikes out if shot at too much.
  • Advertised Extra: All the monsters are represented by the Keepah enemy in the story section of the NES manual.
  • Always Chaotic Evil: The overwhelming majority want to kill Pit, and failing that, anything else that is not an underworld monster. They are the only forces that will attack Pit without provocation even when nominally allied with him. With that clear, they sometimes do take pleasure in non-violent activities when non Underworld monsters are not readily available.
  • An Ice Person: Snowmen and Frozums, the latter of which make good air conditioners, according to their Idol description.
  • And I Must Scream: Collins are Centurions that have been taken over by Phils, toxic worms that live inside in their bodies.
  • Art Evolution: Uprising gives new designs to various monsters that originally debuted in the original NES game
  • Bandit Mook: Plutons and Pluton Flies will steal Pit's weapons and sell them to the Black Marketeer.
  • Bat Out of Hell: Shootfiles swarm their enemies if they fire their weapons while they’re sleeping.
  • Big Eater: Guttlers eat their own comrades, such as Shemums and Shulms, as well as other enemies to grow stronger. If they grab Pit, they can continuously grow bigger while he takes gradual damage.
  • Cyclops: More than half of the Underworld creatures have only one eye.
  • Dark Is Evil: Played With in that they were around before the goddess of darkness was banished to the underworld. She just found it ridiculously easy to turn them into her personal army.
  • Dem Bones: Ganewmedes are skeletal Monoeyes that can counter Pit’s projectiles by spitting spiked balls.
  • The Dreaded: Several Underworld monsters such as Clubberskulls are this, but the Fire Wyrms take the cake for even other monsters being afraid of them, despite the fact they‘re actually carefree.
  • Everyone Hates Hades: Hades' roman name is used as the basis for Pluton, an annoying Bandit Mook.
  • Evil Is Visceral: The Clubberskull enemy resembles a giant human heart with an eyeball, and it is typically sealed away in the form of a large skull. It's so grotesque in appearance, it practically borders on being an Eldritch Abomination.
  • Expy: Komaytos are based on Metroids from the Metroid series, something that Pit tries to pick up on, but Viridi tells him to can it.
  • Gag Nose:
    • Specknoses, which are patterned after Groucho Marx glasses and Hirokazu Tanaka's nose.
    • In the original game, the Zuree has an enormous pink nose as one of its only visible facial features. It's changed to a tongue in Uprising.
  • Giant Enemy Crab: Brawny Clawses, which only appear in Air Battles, can try to block Pit and/or Dark Pit’s path by stretching their claws.
  • Giant Hands of Doom: The Snongs have two large disembodied arms that they use to crush Pit or punch him and other enemies of the Underworld Army. In a unique case, the arms themselves only appear when summoned.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: When an Erinus splits into two, its lower half is wearing pink striped boxers.
  • The Goomba:
    • The winged snakes called Shenum fill this role, being common mooks that are very easy to beat.
    • In the first game, each fortress has a very basic, slow-moving, easily killed enemy commonly found throughout the labyrinth. The Underworld fortress has Kobil, the Overworld fortress has Shulm, and the Skyworld fortress has Uranos. The Shulm in particular looks similar to the Trope Namer, particularly in the original NES game; however, the Uprising versions are a little too specialized and dangerous to qualify.
  • The Heartless: In Uprising; the underworld forces are created from souls of the dead, and tons of souls are required to create just one creature.
  • Heavily Armored Mook: The Suits of Skuttlers are invulnerable to frontal attacks and can only be attacked from behind.
  • Helpful Mook: For a brief while during the Aurum invasion arc where they help dispose of the alien invaders, though they still attack Pit when unoccupied.
  • Informed Attribute:
    • The manual describes Uranos as a very powerful and dangerous God of the Sky, drawing him as a fire breathing giant. In-game Uranos is an easily defeated dwarf with no special powers.
    • The Shulm enemy is described as having a disarmingly meek appearance in its Idol description, though its actual appearance is rather monstrous.
  • Kick Chick: Having only legs to attack with, Mimicuties are this by default. They're not truly underworld monsters so much as wanderers who like to kill adventurers, but Hades is able make deliberate use of several.
  • Killer Rabbit: Bumbledrops may seem cute and cuddly, but their true dragon faces are terrifying and can ram Pit and/or spin into him, the latter of which causes dizziness.
  • Laughably Evil: Should one watch what they do before shooting them, they can be pretty amusing (i.e. being tossed about by wind, swimming in the ocean, watching characters fight, riding on Monoliths, being hit by things and shot at, and doing Interface Screw.)
  • Our Gods Are Different: The first game's manual describes certain enemies as distinct gods, such as Holer being the God of Plants, Uranos being the God of the Sky, and Erinus being the God of Revenge. Despite being "gods", they're actually just common mook without any individuality.
  • Our Monsters Are Weird: Most of the creatures that serve as mooks are downright bizarre.
  • Mook Mobile: Fort Oinks, which are piloted by 2 Skuttlers and transport Underworld monsters to the heart of a battle by launching them erratically.
  • Plant Mooks: Daphnes were once normal plants in the Skyview Temple before Medusa’s powers turned them into Underworld soldiers, roles they reprise in Uprising.
  • Playing with Fire: Several monsters such as Fire Wyrms and Skuttler Mages use fire in their attacks, while the Magmoo is magma from the Underworld given sentient life by Medusa.
  • Sinister Nudity: Syrens were initially depicted as being topless in manual art and are underworld monsters sent by Medusa to kill Pit when he reaches the final level. Subverted in Uprising where they were redesigned with a breastplate for censorship reasons, though their nudity is still present in the game, as seen in this image.
  • Spell My Name With An S: The spelling of Mick's name is changed to Mik in Uprising.
  • Straight for the Commander: Defeating Remoblams and Ziks cause the latter’s Zaks to wander around aimlessly until a new Zik gets them back in the game, while the former’s Remoblamlings explode all together.
  • Sudden Name Change: The EelEye, which had a Dub Name Change in the first Kid Icarus, is renamed Phil in Uprising to match its original Japanese name. Likewise, Mcgoo, went from Spitball Blob in Myths and Monsters to Magmoo, their current name from Uprising onwards.
  • Taken for Granite: Igniots, the mobile cannons of the Underworld Army, turn Pit to stone as a status effect via their lasers. It's only thanks to Palutena's protection that the effect is temporary.
  • Tank Goodness: Crawlers are living sentient tanks that can put the pain on Pit and other enemies of the Underworld Army by spinning themselves and bombarding them with missiles, as well as explode on them when defeated.
  • Tentacled Terror: Octos, as the name implies, is an octopus-like monster, while it’s fellow Underworld comrade, Commylose, is a squid.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Various Underworld monsters from the first Kid Icarus such as Monoeyes, Shemums, Kerons, Nettlers, Octos, Commyloses, Shulms, Zurees, Girins, Collins and Phils, Daphnes, and Miks have new attacks or improved attacks such as Shemums now poisoning their enemies by biting them, Commyloses producing missiles from their bottoms and throwing them, Specknoses now fighting alongside other Underworld monsters and sneezing out bombs while doing an occasional sneeze to fake out Pit, Zurees slashing with their claws while disappearing and reappearing at will, and Komaytos now acting like actual Metroids.
