The Pastel Kingdom

    In General

In General

The Royal family of a small, hilly kingdom that is quite sheltered from the rest of the world. It is so remote and often overlooked that the CPC chose it as the location of their HQ.

  • The Beautiful Elite: They're the ruling family of the Pastel Kingdom, and they're all visibly pretty, except Gwen, who's internally pretty.
  • Missing Mom: The Pastel Queen died when Gwen was still very young.
  • Nice Guy: Their kindness is a family trait, especially in comparison to how most of the other royal families are depicted. Subverted with the previous Pastel King and Queen, who both did whatever they could to stop their son from marrying Lilyth because they deemed her too "ugly."
  • Sheltered Aristocrat: Due to the Pastel King's obsessive overprotectiveness of his children, his daughters haven't even really been outside the palace their whole lives. This has protected them from how judgmental and cruel people can be and causes them to always look for the best in people.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Their father dotes on them and they pass that generosity forward.

    Gwendolyn

Princess Gwendolyn of the Pastel Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princess_gwendolyn.png
Click here for a more flattering depiction of her

The youngest princess of the Pastel Kingdom. Aged 16. She was born looking very different to the rest of her stereotypically beautiful family. At the start of the story she is engaged to Prince Frederick of the Pastel Kingdom, an arrangement he is rather disappointed in. Questioning her self-worth for the first time, she find emotional support within the Cursed Princess Club.

  • Act of True Love: When Gwen falls under a sleeping curse, rather than Frederick awaking her with a kiss like in any other fairy tale, Gwen actually wakes herself up when she FINALLY learns to love herself for who she is (symbolized by her kissing a dream-manifestation of herself as Humpty-Dumpty. Although, her mother appearing to her in the dream and giving her a pep talk also helped alot.
  • Ambiguously Human: Admit it, with her green skin and hair, Pointy Ears, Scary Teeth, and lack of nose, she arguably looks more like a goblin than someone of her family. Her mother is revealed to be from an island of people who all have the same unusual features, further implying Gwen is some kind of half-human hybrid.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It's hotly debated by the fans out-of-universe and the characters in-universe whether Gwen is cursed or not. She believes she isn't but several characters have noted her appearance is so different from her family that she hardly looks related to them. Then there's the cracks that cover her eyes whenever she looks in a mirror, whilst it seems within the realms of a curse, it might also just be Gwen's psyche reflecting her shattered self-image. Then again, there are the creepy voices that sometimes emanate from her reflection that seem to hypnotically draw her toward them and nearly cause her to drown herself in a pond. Assuming that the story of Melusine in the story is indeed true, then Gwen and her mothers people were spawned from the tears of human-fairy hybrid who was indeed cursed. So she both is and isn’t.
  • All-Loving Hero: Gwen doesn't have one mean bone in her body and is nice to everyone, even people who have hurt her or tried to wrong her.
  • Butter Face: Barring her light green skin, Gwen doesn't look much worse than the average teenager. It's just that her face is a constant Nightmare Face that, more often than not, becomes worse when she "smiles". Though, as Leopold puts it, she has her own unique form of beauty that just isn’t conventional. Though many people who first see her think she’s freaky looking or ugly, others see it over time.
  • Color Motif: Green: she has green skin and hair, and most of the clothes she wears are of a shade of green.
  • Covert Pervert: She is FAR more reserved than her sisters, but when she and her sisters ask their father for information on the princes her question is "Big spoon or little spoon".
  • Cute Little Fangs: Her canines are quite prominent in certain shots.
  • Dude Magnet: Despite not sharing the “conventional” beauty of her sisters, she manages to secure herself several suitors. Frederick is initially put off by her looks but over time falls for her sweet and loving personality, Leopold finds her unconventional appearance more attractive than her stereotypically attractive sisters, and Lieutenant Dandridge doesn't care about her appearance and loves her because he thinks she's Maria.
  • Driven to Suicide: Played with. After discovering that Frederick was told to woo her by his father (and not hearing Frederick say that was never the case) her self-image becomes worse to the point where she thinks that no one would ever love her and that her sisters broke off their engagements because of her. So she willingly takes a bite out of a witches poisoned apple which puts her to sleep.
  • Everyone's Baby Sister She is this for the Cursed Princess Club, both because they want to make their newest member feel welcome and because her sweet, nonconfrontational personality and intense Appearance Angst make them eager to help her overcome her insecurities. At certain points, they even express a desire to give Prince Frederick, Gwen's unwilling fiancé who called her ugly and thus gave her those insecurities, a piece of their minds. That desire becomes inconvenient when Frederick eventually stumbles upon the club (which they actively keep secret from non-members). They initially try to drug him to sleep to make him think his encounter with them was just a dream, and when that fails they come close to giving him a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown while angrily berating him for how he has treated Gwen. But they soon find out that Frederick has come to be genuinely attracted to Gwendolyn by that point, making them realize they were overreacting. The CPC members do later get a chance to satisfy their protective instincts when Frederick's childhood bullies gear up for tormenting Frederick and Gwendolyn, and the CPC teams up with Fred's older brothers to scare the bullies out of their wits.
  • Freakiness Shame: As soon as she becomes aware that her looks are considered ugly by people outside her immediate family she begins developing huge self-image problems.
  • The Grotesque: Downplayed. Gwendolyn isn't conventionally beautiful and by the standards of the society she lives in is considered hideous and somewhat terrifying. But she has her own form of cuteness that others can see over time (even Frederick who initially saw her as ugly would later find certain faces she makes cute and later call her beautiful). Leopold sums it up.
Leopold to Gwen: “There's a complexity to your beauty that challenges those who gaze at you with a depth and a uniqueness...A uniqueness that many people and artists wouldn't be able to appreciate immediately due to their simple biases.”
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Her siblings beauty based powers all help them fight. But Gwen’s is the only one that managed to make LELAND cry.
  • Hot Guy, Ugly Wife: She is engaged to Prince Frederick, and should they get married then they would become this.
  • Irony: Out of the whole Cursed Princess Club, Gwen's the only one who looks like she could've been cursed, yet isn't.
  • I Am Not Pretty: She was raised to believe that all princesses, by nature, were inherently beautiful. When she learns her fiancé views her as ugly it is hugely detrimental to her sense of self-worth and her mental health. She refuses to accept the attempts of her family, the CPC and Leopold to convince her that she really is beautiful the way she is.
  • Insecure Love Interest: To Frederick. It doesn't help that he called her ugly shortly after first meeting her, essentially causing the start of her insecurities in the first place. She becomes comfortable with being Just Friends with him despite clearly still being attracted to him.
  • I Just Want to Be Beautiful: To say her self-esteem hits the floor after she overhears Frederick call her ugly would be an understatement, so through most of the story, she displays a desire to find a way to become more conveniently pretty.
  • Mirror-Cracking Ugly: Once Gwen begins to grow self-conscious about her appearance she begins to see a large crack over her eyes whenever she looks in the mirror. It's an Ambiguous Situation if this is just in Gwen's brain or part of an actual curse.
  • Nice Girl: Even amongst her family of friendly, sweet and kind siblings, she still stands out as the nicest of all.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: Subverted. Whilst she and her twin brother, Jamie, couldn't look more different from each other, they are both equally sweet, kind and supportive.
    • While Jaime's beauty-based superpower is to emit a blinding light from his body, when Gwen creates something out of kindness and selflessness it imbues warm feelings in others and later glows brightly as well.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Her attempts to befriend Frederick would've paid off far sooner and more smoothly if her choice of phrase, various misunderstandings and a couple very egregious One Dialogue, Two Conversations moments hadn't convinced Frederick that Gwendolyn was a witch plotting to harm him. She acknowledges this later.
  • Pointy Ears: Certain shots reveal her ears are pointy, which becomes more notable when you realize she's the only one of her family with them.
  • Scary Teeth: She has a mouthful of sharp fangs.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: As seen with her volunteer and gala outfits, Gwen can look pretty charming when she's given enough prep time.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: She's been just as sheltered as her siblings, so her social skills are... lacking.
  • Stepford Smiler:
    • After a few days of knowing Gwen, the Prez quickly discerns she is one of these.
Prez: "I'm on to you now. You like to help others so you don't have to face your own problems."
    • This trait reaches its peak in the Season 3 finale, when Gwen realizes that while she has genuine romantic interest in Frederick, the reason she's felt so conflicted isn't simply a case of Cannot Spit It Out but because those emotions are mixed in with her suppressing the pain and resentment about how much he hurt her when they first met. She chooses the very emotionally unhealthy option of trying to ignore her negative feelings and "skip forward" to her happily-ever-after.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She is the only child who inherited her looks from her mom.
  • Sweet Baker: Gwendolyn has a love for cooking. Jamie judges her food to be so delicious because she always cooks it with love and keeps who she's cooking for in mind.
  • Through His Stomach: Unintentionally. Her attempts to talk to Frederick are fraught with misunderstandings and accidents, but when he first tastes her cooking her natural warmth and kindness finally become clear to him, opening the way for him to take the first step towards actually getting to know his fiancée.
  • True Beauty Is on the Inside: One of the many lessons she learns from the Cursed Princess Club.
    • Emphasized in the final chapters, whereas her brother discovers his ability to emit blinding light from his own body due to his immense outer beauty, a rope that she fashions to help save the Plaid King glows brightly as well, showing her selfless inner beauty.
  • Weirdness Magnet: Gwen seems to unintentionally attract critters such as rats, spiders and vermin towards her, further making her appear unsettling to others.
  • When She Smiles: Gwen doesn't smile often, but when she does, it's absolutely adorable (as long as it’s natural). Seeing this causes Frederick to see Gwen’s own unique beauty.
  • Wide Eyes and Shrunken Irises: Her eyes are perpetually like this, which makes quite a contrast with her siblings.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: The Cursed Princess Club tell her this once she opens up about her insecurities and her recent Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane Mirror-Cracking Ugly reflection.
  • Younger Than They Look: She's only a teenager, but you wouldn't be able to tell that at first glance.

    The Pastel King

King Jack of the Pastel Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_pastel_king.png
Spoiler — Click Here to See Prince Jack at 18

Gwendolyn, Maria, Lorena and Jamie's father and the King of the Pastel Kingdom.

  • Adventurer Archaeologist: Subverted. He can easily be mistaken for this as a young princeling but, in fact, ever since he was a child he despised the people who stole treasure and artifacts from the cultures they belonged to. He became an activist trying to prevent this sort of thievery but because of his beauty the masses ignored his message and just made him into a beauty icon instead.
  • Broken Pedestal: To the Prez. When she was a child, she remembers seeing a cool and beautiful woman in a pantsuit at a gala, who heroically knocked out an enraged nobleman about to attack a helpless butler. This later caused the Prez to base her entire image and goals in life around becoming like that woman. It turns out it wasn't a woman, it was a young Jack whose dazzling beauty stunned the nobleman long enough to cause them to accidentally slip and fall. Prez is devastated to realize her childhood hero was completely made up from her own misunderstandings and is incredibly disappointed with the current Jack.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: He immediately shamed his parents the moment they finally said Lilyth was ugly to his face, ordering his mother to look in the mirror to see just how ugly she was at that moment.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: In his kingdom, if you look at his daughter's faces it is considered punishable by death. Understandably, this makes the lives of the royal guard very difficult when they can't look at the people they're trying to protect.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: In his youth he looked enough like one that Prez mistook him for a lady in a pantsuit.
  • Fantasy-Forbidding Father: His children are devastated to learn that his future plans for them ruin their dreams with little consideration. He forbids Maria from singing at a concert because he feels it'd be unsafe for her to be in front of that many people and he intends for the gentle Jamie to take over his troops whilst denying the military-minded Lorena the chance to ever step foot on a battlefield.
  • Flanderization: In terms of his overprotective tendencies. It was already bad in the beginning, as he wouldn’t let his daughters leave the castle, and even forbid the male guards from looking at them. But it gets even worse, as he keeps trying to postpone their weddings. Y’know, the ones he arranged in the first place.
  • Freudian Excuse: His overbearing attitude towards keeping his children safe stems from trying to adhere to his wife's dying wishes, and from seeing firsthand what Lilyth suffered from his parents once they outright called her ugly in front of him and realizing his entire family hated her for no good reason.
  • Good Cannot Comprehend Evil: When he finally saw how horrid his parents were towards Lilyth, Jack admits he never understood why they were so obsessed with appearances all of his life. He then declares them to be utterly hideous, and thinks their obsession is because they're such ugly people.
  • Helicopter Parents: Oh so very much. He kept his daughters sheltered from the outside world for their entire lives, refusing to allow them to interact with boys aside from their brother up until their recent engagements. He cares deeply for all his children, and though he agreed to their Arranged Marriage with the Plaid Princes, he is still very reluctant to let them get too close to them. He's so protective, he hasn't even let them go to the usual parties and debutante balls most princesses attend.
The Pastel King: Present them to society?! Who would do something so psychotic?! That's like pointing a giant arrow at my girls and saying, "come and get 'em!"
    • He comes to realize that he was doing more than harm than good in treating his daughters this way, and decided to go against Lilyth's last requests for the sake of their children's happiness.
  • I've Come Too Far: He's starting to realize how much damage he's inflicted on his daughters by upholding his wife's dying wishes and hates himself for it, but just can't bring himself to break his promise to Lilyth until he finds the object from her third request. The penultimate chapter reveals he actually subverted this trope as soon as he read Leland's blackmail note, realizing he was suffocating his children by adhering to his wife's wishes.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: In his youth, Jack was very much like his son in terms of looks.
  • Large Ham: He is prone to outrageous bouts of yelling with impotent rage whenever a man gets near his daughters.
  • Oblivious to Hatred: Not for him, but for his then-fiancé. When he first brought Lilyth home and introduced her as his bride-to-be, he never picked up that his family found her unattractive and thus unworthy of marrying into their stunningly beautiful family, even though they often gave her Death Glares, tried to convince him to leave her home while he went out, and schemed to set him up with other women. At least until his parents outright admit it.
  • Oblivious to Love: Throughout his youth, Jack was mistaken for a woman and given gifts from gentleman who found him attractive. Jack just thought it was a custom to give him gifts out of niceness, not courting. He once even won a beauty contest and didn’t even know what it was for, having just walked onstage.
  • Odd Friendship: The Pastel King is a jovial man who is best friend with the cold-hearted and ruthless Plaid King. Their friendship runs so deep, Jack is willing to put aside his usual overprotectiveness for his daughters and allow them to marry Leland's sons to unify their kingdoms.
  • Papa Wolf: He is extremely protective of his daughters and when he feels they're being threatened his jovial, kindly, old man persona drops to reveal a tyrannical maniac in an instant. He gives the Plaid Princes permission to slay anyone within his kingdom who so much as looks at his girls.
  • Parental Favoritism: Downplayed. The Pastel King loves all of his children, but he is far more protective of his daughters and far less concerned for the safety of his son, Prince Jamie.
  • Parents as People: He clearly loves his daughters but places strict policies on their interactions with the opposite sex and is struggling to balance his responsibilities as a king with his role as a single father.
  • Pretty Boy: Jack was a pretty boy in his youth — so handsome that he sparkled, and could be easily mistaken for a princes with the long hair, delicate face, willowy figure, and frilly pastel "pantsuit." He's even got the portraits to prove it.
  • Properly Paranoid: For all his seemingly unfounded fears about shielding his daughters from the opposite sex, it turns out two out of three of his future son-in-laws were colluding with their father to manipulate the Pastel Princesses into marriage for a scheme to take over the Pastel Kingdom.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: He spends most of the comic trying to delay his daughters marrying the Plaid Princes, despite being best friends with the Plaid King. It's initially played as him being comical overprotective and smothering towards the Pastel Princesses, and Maria and Lorena grow frustrated with his warnings about men being wolves. It turns out the Plaid King spent years plotting to have his sons marry the Pastel Princesses and turn them against their father as part of some convoluted revenge scheme. Even worse, Blaine and Lance were both in on their father's plans the whole time and deliberately romanced Maria and Lorena knowing what their father wanted. Meaning Jack was unwittingly delaying Leland's plans every time he protested the wedding discussions. Maria even points out how annoying it is that Leland proved her father had a good reason to be paranoid.

    Maria

Princess Maria of the Pastel Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princess_maria.png

The Pastel Kingdom's eldest princess. Aged 18.

  • Big Sister Instinct: Maria is furious with Frederick when she finds out he called Gwen ugly, and with Blaine and Lance for covering it up. When Blaine lets out a Freudian Slip that reveals he thinks of Gwen the same way, she furiously dumps him, throwing her new engagement ring to the ground.
  • Cool Big Sis: She assures Gwendolyn with complete sincerity that she thinks she's the most beautiful person she's ever seen — inside or out.
  • Covert Pervert: Despite her angelic looks, Maria is by far the thirstiest Pastel princess, taking every opportunity to ogle her fiance's (admittedly very toned) forms and pouncing on any opportunity for physical intimacy with him (which don't happen nearly as often as she'd like... and most of those are misunderstandings).
  • Dude Magnet: Her looks attract the attention of many men once her father lets her go out in public for the first time.
  • The Fashionista: She is the self-proclaimed "most fashion-forward sister" out of the trio.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Maria is adored by animals to the point they dress her and do her hair each morning... despite her keeping her windows closed and sleeping on the top floor.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Despite her beauty and grace in comparison to Gwen, she is constantly loving and supportive of her younger sister.
  • Idol Singer: Maria's dream is to perform concerts and inspire the people with her voice.
  • Loony Fan:
    • She becomes this for Blaine the moment she learns of his existence. The fact that she'll be marrying him causes her to try to hide and control it as best she can, but she is truly obsessed, purchasing all of his merchandise and generally acting so rabid about him that it actually convinces the majority of his fan base to back off and stop bothering her.
Maria: "This is truly who I am, Blaine. As much as I try to be an elegant princess, I can't seem to suppress the part of me that's just an obsessive fan girl with a knack for getting into disgusting messes."
    • Ultimately subverted, as she soon grows out of this as she realizes through Beckett’s advice that even though she knows Blaine might not be perfect and she doesn’t know him as well as she would like, she wants to learn about him and love him, flaws and all. After seeing him fail for the first time, instead of having a Broken Pedestal, she recruits the fan club to cheer Blaine on and help him win the contest anyway, then reassures him after the contest that she will be here for all his worst moments, not just his good ones.
Maria: "I'm on your team, and I'm not rooting for your perfection. I'm just rooting for you."
    • Before her engagement to Blaine she was a Groupie for the classical musical composer Bozart, keeping a bust of him in her room that she'd practice kissing with and she'd developed an entire imaginary romance with him to the point that when she got engaged to Blaine she also had an imaginary break-up.
  • Princess Classic: Subverted. At first glance, she appears to be this, complete with being dressed and having her hair done by sweet woodland creatures, which underscores how much Gwen stands out in her family. Whilst she is still probably the character that best portrays this trope, she moves further away from it as her less flattering qualities such as her obsessiveness and fangirling come to light.
  • Stress Vomit: Blaine's plan to take Maria into a haunted house so she'll be scared and cling to him backfires when he learns she's a "fear vomiter."
  • Stunned Silence: She's left momentarily speechless from shock and rage when Blaine insults Gwen, prompting her to toss her engagement ring and wanting nothing to do with him.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Girly Girl to Lorena's Tomboy.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Her father notes that among all his children, he's always considered Maria the "impractical" one. Whilst she and Lorena are both equally eager to marry their prospective husbands, Maria is interested in the romance of the wedding whilst the "way TOO practical" Lorena is more interested in what takes place "after" the wedding.
  • A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: When she was a child, her father would read her tales like Little Red Riding Hood to teach her and her sisters that men are wolves, perverse beasts that aren't to be trusted. However, after meeting Blaine, Maria begins to have nightmares of Blaine in a red hood and her being The Big Bad Wolf that eats him. She awakens from the dream horrified.
Maria: "...I think. I'm the wolf, Father..."
  • Yoko Oh No: In-universe, Blaine's fan club hate her for being engaged to the object of their obsession. However, she amazingly manages to win a number of them over when it turns out she's the biggest Fangirl out of them all.

    Lorena

Princess Lorena of the Pastel Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princess_lorena.png

The Pastel Kingdom's second eldest princess. Aged 17.

  • Action Girl: Despite her girly looks, Lorena is skilled in a variety of martial arts.
  • Admiring the Abomination: She is the only person (including the CPC) who is amazed by Prez’s spider form.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Whilst she's a great warrior and highly adaptable, Lance helps her realize that, whilst offensive attacks come naturally to her, she needs to improve her comprehension of advanced defensive strategies.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Despite being Book Dumb, Molly describes Lorena as being a strong tactile-kinesthetic learner, having excellent motor coordination and being incredibly fast at picking up physical movements and timing. This is best shown when she spends four rounds receiving a Curb-Stomp Battle in a fencing match with Suzanna Winchester and just by observing her opponent's movements she is able to work out how to fight toe-to-toe with her. She adapts boxing moves into fencing moves which leads to her being so unpredictable and unlike any fencer Suzanna's ever encountered before that Lorena nearly wins despite it only being her first fencing match ever.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Lorena is furious at Frederick when she finds out that he thought Gwen was ugly, and at Blaine and Lance for covering up it and the fact that their father forced Frederick to go through with the engagement. She dumps Lance, accusing him of only caring for "his team", and throws her new engagement ring in his face.
  • Book Dumb: She attempts to read her algebra book upside down and then rips out the pages to use as parchment to write love letters to Lance.
  • Cool Big Sis: She is very supportive of Gwen and assures her that she and Maria would never want anything to do with anyone that made Gwen feel "less than awesome."
  • Defeat Means Friendship: She views her fencing match with Suzanna as good fun and immediately glomps her after their fight, asking if they can do it again. Suzanna, however, certainly doesn't consider Lorena her friend, even after she shows up to cheer her on at her future matches.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: She's disgusted when she realizes Lance has been going along with his father's insane plans because he's scared of the man and because he thinks he's doing it to protect her. Lorena gives him a blistering "The Reason You Suck" Speech, calling him a coward for making her doubt she could protect her love ones when he doesn't even believe in himself.
Lorena: I can't believe I let you shake my confidence when you didn't think I could lead an army on my own. I thought you didn't believe in me. But now I get it. You don't believe in yourself at all.
Lance: I'm telling you this isn't child's play Lorena! You can't win against my dad!
Lorena: I'M NOT SCARED OF YOUR STUPID DAD!
Lance: Well you need to be! Please just let me-
(Lorena swings legs at Lance's head, slashing Lance's cheek over his scar and drawing blood as she breaks loose from her mask)
Lorena: And I don't want your protection!
  • Dude Magnet: Her good looks attract the attention of many men when her father finally allows her to go out in public.
  • Green Thumb: Downplayed — when the series beings, Lorena appears to have some sort of supernatural power over plants, with massive flowers blooming wherever she sleeps. Later on she's able to consciously harness that power to grow all-natural swords, scythes, and armor from the ground beneath her feet.
  • Innocently Insensitive: To Suzanna Winchester. She mistakes her last name for "Incester" and has no clue about her family's esteemed legacy due to her sheltered upbringing. Suzanna mistakes this for an insult and challenges her to a duel.
  • Insatiable Newlyweds: She is very eager to get to this part with Lance.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Takes great glee recounting the intense and gory fairy tales she read from the Crimm Brothers books. She also develops an obsession with beating up scary clowns, looking like a starved animal whenever someone mentions "clown," and is the only person who thinks Prez's cursed form is cool.
  • Oblivious to Hatred: She never gets the hint that Suzanna does not like her or consider her to be her friend, despite her yelling and growling whenever she’s near.
  • Pretty Princess Powerhouse: Lorena is considered the military genius in the family having been coached privately in various forms of combat and military strategy since she was a child.
  • Princess Classic: Subverted. At first glance, she appears to be this trope, with flowers blooming around her when she sleeps, to underscore how much Gwen stands out in comparison to the rest of her family. However, it eventually becomes clear that Lorena is actually a Pretty Princess Powerhouse instead.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: She is the Tomboy to Maria's Girly Girl.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Lorena is fond of flowers, the color pink and wearing pretty dresses, but don't let that fool you into thinking she's a softie.
  • Unintentionally Karmic: She becomes this to Suzanna Winchester when they finally meet. Suzanna is a smug, haughty fencer who lords her undefeated status over others, who is solely interested in Lorena’s fiancé, Lance, and hates Lorena for being engaged to him. Not only is Lorena is oblivious to this and believes Suzanna to be her friend, she unintentionally rubs Lance’s affections for her in his face by bringing him to a fencing match to cheer Suzanna on, or by thanking and kissing him for being concerned over her right in front of Suzanna.

    Jamie

Prince Jamie of the Pastel Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/prince_jamie.png

The Pastel Kingdom's only prince and the twin brother of Gwendolyn. Aged 16.

  • Ambiguously Gay: Jamie has never shown attraction to any of the women in the series, yet develops feelings for Leopold.
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: Subverted. When he accidentally knocks Leopold unconscious with his blinding light during the final battle in Episode 163, he starts tearfully confessing his feelings for the artist. He's stopped mid confession by what's implied to be Leopold confessing through a drawing he makes Jamie taste.
  • Bishie Sparkle: Actual physical sparkles emit from his flawless skin and can sometimes be bright enough to temporarily blind people.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He initially seems like a weirdo who is far too comfortable being naked, but he's also an accomplished food critic who takes his job very seriously and is more socially aware than his sheltered sisters. When Molly fears Jamie is about to strip naked in the Plaid Castle, he casually reminds her that he's a professional and he knows not to get naked outside of his home.
  • Color Motif: Pink
  • Cool Big Bro: He and Gwendolyn are actually twins, but he is clearly the more emotionally mature and socially adept out of the two of them. He is always rooting for Gwendolyn from the sidelines, offering to listen to her problems, and keeping an eye out for her whenever he can.
  • Did I Just Say That Out Loud?: Has an unfortunate habit of doing this when food tasting and using his Super-Senses accidentally revealing the cooks' secrets.
Jamie: "What? -Oh, right! Uh, the texture of the sauce is rich and velvety, but it's being weighed down by your fear of your co-workers finding out about your full-body rash. —I mean...!! Crap, sorry about that..."
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: With his gorgeous hot-pink hair, long lashes, big magenta eyes, flawless skin, and willowy frame, he is often mistaken in-universe for a woman. Most awkwardly, the majority of people who see him or portraits of him mistake him for his sister, Gwen, which leads to several mix-ups and complications throughout the plot.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: At his "wake" there are several men who are willing to try waking the prince with true love's kiss... only for the sake of the kingdom, of course!
  • Innocently Insensitive: When he is tasting the food brought to him by the chefs of the land, he wants to do his job to its highest quality so gives his opinion with Brutal Honesty, revealing the poor cooks' deepest fears and secrets which they've unknowingly cooked into their dishes and have been found by Jamie's Super-Senses.
  • Jerkass to One: Jamie is one of the nicest and most supportive characters in the cast, however, he decides to "haunt" Leopold when the painter insults him. It shows off a petty and vindictive side to Jamie he rarely shows.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Jamie gets his pretty, feminine looks from his father's side of the family.
  • My Greatest Failure: Because there are only so many flavors in existence, some flavors and emotions taste practically identical to Jamie's Super-Senses, such as devastation tasting like carpet. He once wrote a scathing review of a chef from the Paisely Kingdom because he thought they'd served him Bolognese that fell on the floor when Jamie was actually tasting the chef's devastation from the death of their beloved parakeet. Jamie considers this a grease stain on his conscience that will never wash out.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Jamie's real name is James, however he's exclusively referred to as "Jamie" by everyone in the series with the exception of his father.
  • Parental Neglect: It's apparent that the Pastel King didn't smother Jamie as much as his sisters, which would explain why Jamie isn't as socially awkward as them.
  • Pretty Boy: Even his own sisters' refer to him as "the pretty one."
  • Polar Opposite Twins: Subverted. Whilst Jamie and Gwen couldn't be more different in appearance and self-confidence, they are both kind-hearted, supportive and empathetic people.
  • The Power of Love: After tasting what's implied to be a feelings reciprocation drawing from Leopold, Jamie is able to channel his Bishie Sparkles, which become pink with hearts in them, into Leopold and make an even more powerful and blinding attack that almost completely takes down any remaining people on the battle field, ally or enemy.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Despite being a prince he is working towards a career as a food critic and already had a high demand of clients, wide renown amongst the culinary community and a highly lucrative food critiquing business.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: He knew all along about the Cursed Princess Club thanks to the emotions he read from Gwen's food, but never said anything out of respect for Gwen's privacy. When he shows up with Leopold to find the club outside the castle and Aurelia in the process of melting through the front door, he calmly assures everyone that he knows what they're capable of and advises Aurelia to carry on as she were.
  • Sensory Overload: Due to his ability to taste the emotions of the person making what he eats he ends up suffering this during the art exhibit he set up with Leopold in the Season 3 finale. Leopold makes a community art piece by having everyone who attends the exhibit contribute an ingredient to a giant cookie. Jamie eats the cookie and ends up sensing the emotions of everyone who came to the exhibit that day simultaneously.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: A rare spear counterpart. He isn't concerned about people seeing him in the nude whatsoever and even refuses to put on clothes in protest until his father lifts the harsh restrictions placed upon his sisters.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: After Leopold insults him, Jamie decides to "haunt" the painter, forcing his way into his artwork and driving him nuts.
  • Sleeps in the Nude: To his father's eternal embarrassment.
  • Super-Senses: He is a super-taster. His tastebuds allow him to precisely discern not only many separate ingredients in a dish, but also the emotional wellfare of the chef preparing the food, giving him unique insight as a food critic.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: What happens after he realizes he's developed feelings for Leopold.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Waffles. One falling on his face is close enough to True Love's Kiss to wake him from a sleeping curse. Horrifyingly, his favorite type of waffle is a concoction of Gwen's called the "Magical Friendship Volcano Surprise" which is a nauseatingly unhealthy recipe involving slathering three waffles together with two layers of strawberries and whipped cream then cutting a hole down the middle which is filled with sweets and sprinkles, then all of it is drizzled with butterscotch sauce and finally a ring of marshmallow bunnies is placed on top. The royal kitchen staff fears that each one Jamie eats is shortening his lifespan.

    The Pastel Guards

Lieutenant Beckett Dandridge and Jerry

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pastel_guards.png
Left to Right: Jerry (Left), Beckett (Right)

Two guards charged with guarding the castle but forbidden from looking at the princesses by the overprotective king.

  • Berserk Button: When Jerry tells Beckett that Maria is going to get married Beckett denies it, calls the man a liar and threatens to beat the old guard up!
  • Bodyguard Crush: Whilst he's never allowed to see Princess Maria's face because of her Boyfriend-Blocking Dad, Beckett falls in love with her from listening to her sing from the balcony above his post.
  • Dirty Old Man: Jerry often asks Beckett if he's gotten up to anything "exciting" on his time off and is always sorely disappointed by his responses.
Jerry: "You see any hotties this weekend mate?"
Beckett: "I went to the dentist. My mom thinks he's fairly handsome."
    Jerry: "...Wtf, mate..."
  • Foil: Lieutenant Beckett Dandridge is actually a pretty effective foil for most of the other male cast members. In a webtoon in which the majority of the male cast make rash judgements based on the appearance of their respective love interests he's the only one with no clue what his crush looks like and he loves her regardless. Even when he mistakes Gwen for Maria he sees absolutely nothing wrong with her appearance because he already thinks he's in love with her.
  • Hoist by Their Own Petard: Beckett confronts Blaine about not knowing anything about his own fiancée beyond her appearance. This causes Blaine to reflect on his actions and make an effort to get to know Maria better. This further reduces any chance Beckett would ever having of winning her affections for himself.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Beckett is a lowly footguard for the Pastel Kingdom, hopelessly in love with Princess Maria. He's been forbidden from ever seeing her face and she's engaged to Prince Blaine who she's obsessed with.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: They seem to be pretty good friends but one is nearing retirement whilst the other is fresh-faced.
  • Loving a Shadow: Blaine accuses Beckett of doing this towards Maria, although Beckett points out Blaine is a Hypocrite for knowing about as much about her as he does despite being her fiancé.
  • May–December Romance: Syrah implies that Jerry is one of her many past lovers.
  • No Name Given: Averted. The younger guard finally reveals his name to be Lieutenant Beckett Dandridge in Episode 38. The older guard, meanwhile, goes unnamed until Episode 169, when it's revealed to be Jerry.
  • Love Triangle: Beckett is in a very one-sided feud against Prince Blaine for Princess Maria's love.
  • Old Cop, Young Cop: In the idyllic Pastel Kingdom there is little actual guard work to do, yet they still share this dynamic with the older one being cynical and bored whilst the younger one is brimming with enthusiasm and idealism.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: As of the epilogue, Beckett's been demoted to another station far away from Maria.
  • Those Two Guys: Due to be partnered with one another for guard duties they're pretty much inseparable until Jerry retires.
  • True Beauty Is on the Inside: Beckett believes this since he's in love with Princess Maria despite being forbidden to ever look at her face. When he mistakes Gwen for Maria he is the first character outside her direct family to make no positive or negative assumptions about her based on her appearance, showing that he's honest about his belief in this and pays little attention to what is culturally considered "attractive" when looking for a partner.

    Pastel Servants

Miss Agatha

Gwen, Maria, Lorena and Jamie's private tutor.

  • Apathetic Teacher: She tries to give the princesses and the prince the very best education she can and she's certainly good at her job, but their antics (and those of their father) have left her quite jaded and weary.
  • Old Maid: It is repeatedly brought up that whilst she is trying to teach the students important skills and guide them towards their futures she has had zero experience with romance in her life and is therefore useless at helping them with their current social problems.
  • Private Tutor: Her role for the Pastel Kingdom's Royal children

Molly

The Pastel Kingdom Royal family's maid.

  • Ninja Maid: Implied. Despite her advanced age she is capable of catching numerous falling shortcakes out of mid-air when the servant holding the tray trips. She moves with enough speed and efficiency to outpace and intimidate the otherwise unflappable Curtis. It's shown this is exactly what she and all of the other maids are, as the actual guards tasked with protecting the Pastel Princesses within the castle.
  • Scullery Maid: She does the chores around the castle and watches the princesses whilst the king is away on business.
  • Token Good Teammate: Back when Jack's parents were king and queen, Molly was apparently the only person in the castle aside from Jack who treated Lilyth with any kindness. Lilyth mentioned she was going to miss her when she planned to leave Jack, and years after her death Molly wishes Lilyth was still here.

    The Pastel Queen (Major Spoilers)

Queen Lilyth/Leelathae of the Pastel Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lilyth.png
Click here to see Lilyth at 20

The wife of King Jack and mother of Gwendolyn, Maria, Lorena, and Jamie. Jack met Lilyth during one of his expeditions to repatriate stolen artifacts to their rightful homes, on "an island far away." She passed away 13 years before the series started due to unknown reasons.

  • Accidental Misnaming: Turns out, her real name is Leelathae. Jack mispronounced it somehow and started calling her Lilyth instead.
  • Ambiguously Human: From what we see of her in Jack's flashback and the portrait he keeps locked away, she looks identical to Gwen. We then find out that she’s from an island where everyone else has the kind of skin, hair and bone structure, separated from the other kingdoms.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: The only memory of her that Gwen has of her is fond.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Subverted. She was convinced to return to Jack by the Omnipotent Clam for telling that she would get pregnant by Jack three times and have the three most beautiful children in the land. She did, but she didn’t consider at the time that one of those pregnancies would be a set of twins and one of them would resemble her. But once she saw Gwen and held her in her arms, Lilyth could recognize how beautiful her child was and realized how badly she'd let Jack's parents get to her.
  • Freakiness Shame: The CPC get a quick glance at her diary and the words written there imply that Lilyth hated herself for her appearance. However, it is a Subverted Trope as it turns out that she was considered beautiful in her native land, and only temporarily doubted herself thanks to Jack's parents, as she had regained her self-worth when Gwen was born.
  • Hot Guy, Ugly Wife: Lilyth shares Gwen's green skin, sunken eyes, and stringy hair, and she married the stunningly handsome Jack.
  • Last Request: On her deathbed, she made three requests of her husband. The first was that he hide their daughters away from the world, the second was to have all her portraits hidden away, and the third was to give her daughters her portrait, as both of the two previous requests were part of her tragically misguided plan to watch over her children as they grew by hiding her soul in said portrait. Unfortunately, her wishes were misinterpreted.
  • Like Mother, Like Daughter: Like Gwen she has an affinity with vermin creatures like possums and rats.
  • Literal Metaphor: Her death was from the left ventricle of her heart weakening from childbirth and not recovering. She literally died of a broken heart.
  • The Lost Lenore: Her death took a hard toll on Jack, to the point that his Bishie Sparkle died out.
  • Missing Mom: She died when Gwendolyn was 3.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: She is the cause of most of the conflict between Jack and their daughters. The reason he is so overprotective of them and keeps them locked up in the castle is to honor Lilyth’s Dying Wish, which was to hide the girls from the rest of the kingdom, as well as any portraits of her. Sadly, she didn’t think Jack would go as overboard as he did, forbidding the girls to follow their passions and marry the men they love. As it is revealed, a lot of this is because Lilyth assumed that she would be able to help guide her family in death from a cursed portrait, never assuming that Leland would steal it and keep her from her loved ones.
  • Oblivious to Love: She never realized that her friend Gaertlan loved her, despite his Suspiciously Specific Denial and eagerness to get Jack off the island and away from her ASAP.
  • Our Mermaids Are Different: One of the creation myths of her homeland is that her people were born from the tears of a mermaid and she, Gwen and the rest of the Braided Island do possess a lot of fish like traits.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She look like an older version of Gwen.
  • Take Care of the Kids: Her Dying Wish was for King Jack to keep their daughters safe by "protecting their beauty from the outside world."
  • Un-person: After her death her husband hid away all portraits of her and refused to even speak about her. Partially because she didn't want to be seen, and partially because he can't be reminded of her without crying.

The Previous Pastel King & Queen

The Last Queen & King of the Pastel Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/51d93032_2ca2_4398_95c6_5de5c1b3efb7.jpeg

Jack’s mother (Queen Helen) and father (King Jesse), the rulers of the Pastel Kingdom before him and the paternal grandparents to Maria, Lorena, Gwen and Jamie.

  • Beauty Is Bad: They're obsessed with ensuring their family creates heirs who're even more beautiful, and will torment anyone who dares get in the way of that.
  • Dramatic Irony: They believe Lilyth was ugly and unsuited to be Jack's wife, accusing her of being a selfish woman who would destroy the happiness of her own children by letting them suffer an unbearable existence of being "ugly." Jack's parents fail to realize their horrid personalities and Lack of Empathy make them the ugliest things in the Pastel Castle, and they themselves are destroying their child's happiness for their own selfish desires. Jack even called them out on this, daring them to look in a mirror to see how ugly they were. They did, and they legitimately saw themselves as hideous.
  • Hate Sink: Despite how beautiful they appear, Jack's parents reveal themselves to be completely awful people who have no problem trying to chase Lilyth out because she's a threat to their Social Darwinist mindset. Jack's mother is easily the worst of the two, making it clear she doesn't care if Lilyth has nowhere else to go if she leaves Jack and wants her gone the moment their engagement ends.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: In their family, they value great beauty above all else when it comes to finding partners to pass their genes to. They acknowledge that the one downside of being incredibly beautiful is that it fades quickly.
King: As they say, "The candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long."
  • Relationship Sabotage: They try to dissuade Lilyth from marrying Jack, first by bribing her, then by telling her that she would be dooming his children with her ugliness if she became the mother of his children.
  • Social Darwinist: For generations the Royal Family of the Pastel Kingdom has chosen only the most physically beautiful romantic partners to marry and reproduce with, causing each generation of Pastel royalty to grow more and more beautiful with the goal of achieving the kind of beauty found in fairytales. That’s why Jack's parents did not approve of Lilyth, believing her marriage to Jack would screw over their centuries old plan with her "ugly" genes just when they seemed on the cusp of their ultimate goal. They even tried to shame Jack for loving Lilyth, telling him it's "immoral" to choose a partner like her when the weight of their family's expectations fall on his shoulders.
  • Through the Eyes of Madness: After Jack called them both ugly for insulting Lilyth, the two looked in a nearby mirror and saw themselves looking monstrous and deformed. The two freaked out not realizing their physical appearances hadn't actually changed, and immediately fled the kingdom while everyone else in the room had no idea what was wrong with them.

The Plaid Kingdom

    The Plaid King

King Leland of the Plaid Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/plaid_king.png
Click here to see Leland at 17

The intimidating and stern ruler of the Plaid Kingdom. He is best friends with the Pastel King and proposed that they marry his three sons to the three Pastel Princesses to unify their kingdoms.

  • Abusive Parents: He straight up threatens to kill Frederick if he tries to break his Arranged Marriage to Gwendolyn. He also inflicts severe exercise routines as punishments on his sons in an attempt to toughen them up. When Frederick was still a child, he wrote home to his father from the military academy for advice on how to handle being bullied. The Plaid King's response? Send a letter that read: "Sink or swim, son." Written in blood.
  • All for Nothing: His plan to overthrow the Pastel Kingdom was doomed from the start. Aside from the fact that each of his sons grew to love the princesses, part of his plan involved him (wrongfully) thinking Jack's daughters would turn on him for being a hypocrite like he did. And thanks to Isolde, his whole takeover of the Pastel Castle became moot after she tricked him into abdicating the throne. Also, Jack ended up ignoring the blackmail letter in favor of his daughters' happiness, so his original plan wouldn’t have worked anyway.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Despite finding out that Jack is a prince and not a princess, he is still rather affectionate with him, even more so with his wife. Later episodes heavily imply that Leland still held feelings for Jack, leading to his attempt to ruin Jack's life as if he were a scorned and bitter ex because Jack didn't "choose" him.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Blaine is afraid to lose favor with his father if he loses the piano contest against the Argyle Prince. But after he does lose, Leland shows that he is not disappointed at all and didn’t care that he lost or won (partly because to him, winning a piano contest is kind of a lame accomplishment). He outright says "It’s okay to lose, Blaine". It might not be much, but with macho, competitive Leland, it’s a big sign of parental affection.
  • Bald of Evil: He has no hair above the crown and is a terrifying parental figure.
  • The Chessmaster: Leland arranged the triple Arranged Marriage of his sons to the Pastel Princesses. For the gala, he set up a decoy artifact and manipulated Blaine into rigging the raffle to make sure Gwen won, making sure it ended up in Jack’s hands, with the note telling him to fetch the Omniscient Clam. His plan, all along, was to get Jack to commit a crime and frame him in front of his newlywed daughters as a Hypocrite for going against his morals of stealing artifacts from other lands, getting Jack arrested and taking away his beloved daughters, with the magic clam as a bonus.
  • Color Motif: Black plaid, contrasting with Isolde's white plaid and his sons' red, blue, and green plaids. If the flashback to his parents' funeral is any indication, their color motifs were purple and yellow plaid.
  • Expert in Underwater Basket Weaving: For some reason he is an expert in the intricacies of the unbreakable bond of sisterhood and correctly guesses that if Frederick calls off his engagement with Gwendolyn, then Maria and Lorena will also break up with Blaine and Lance in solidarity.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He swatted Blaine the moment he called Gwen "ugly," in an action that seemed almost instinctive. A flashback later revealed, after Jack discovered how his family actually thought about Lilyth, that Leland couldn't bring himself to call Lilyth "ugly," admitting she was beautiful because Jack fell in love with her. For all of his faults, the man will acknowledge Lilyth and Gwen aren't hideous monsters.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • He tells Frederick he always planned for him to marry the youngest of the Pastel Princesses, saying he wouldn't let his oldest child marry a 16 year old because he's not a monster. This later becomes Even Evil Has Standards.
    • He later shoves Blaine when he insults Gwendolyn’s appearance out of instinct.
  • Evil All Along: He was always a jerk, but we find out he’s absolutely vile when it’s revealed that he set up the triple Arranged Marriage of his sons and bribed Jack anonymously to get him to steal a priceless artifact so that Leland could get him arrested and at the same time, disillusion his daughters’ view on him and take them away from Jack.
  • Evil Is Petty: Spent two decades on a plan to destroy the Pastel Kingdom and its king personally just because he ceased to be the most important person in Jack's life.
  • Evil Makes You Ugly: It’s implied that his aged appearance and balding is the result of stress brought on by nightmares inflicted on him by Lilith after he stole the portrait her spirit was trapped in. It also may have contributed to loosing even more of his sanity.
  • Fantastic Racism: He believes people with curses should be kept out of public sight.
  • Foil:
    • To the Pastel King. Whilst his counterpart keeps his daughters sheltered from the world out of fear of them being harmed, the Plaid King deliberately exposes his sons to the unfairness of the world in an effort to toughen them up and encourage them to overcome it. Neither of their parenting styles are portrayed positively since both fail their youngest child: Gwendolyn's sheltered lifestyle makes her unprepared for rejection and bias due to her appearance, whilst Frederick took his father's choice to "sink or swim" and chose to sink.
    • He also serves as one to the rulers of the Monochrome Kingdom. When Frederick compares his childhood with Whitney, he finds that they have a lot in common with demanding, unsympathetic parents who have unrealistic standards and encourage constant competition among their siblings. However, Frederick also quickly realizes that while his father was strict and unforgiving, it could've been much worse had Leland not retained his humanity.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: His glasses are usually Scary Shiny Glasses, but he's actually more frightening when you can see through the lenses into his bloodshot enraged red eyes.
  • Freudian Excuse: It's implied his abusive behavior may be the result of trauma he experienced in youth when he lost some of his loved ones.
  • Hidden Disdain Reveal:
    • He's resented Jack for years ever since he "chose" Lilith over him and his attempt to take over the Pastel kingdom is 1/2 revenge.
    • When he confronts Gwen, he reveals that out of all the Pastel children he actually hates her the most because she looks like her mother. Who he also hates for "stealing" Jack from him.
  • Morality Pet: A literal one in Laverne, his pampered pet Llama whom he dotes upon and arguably treats better than his sons.
  • The Needs of the Many: Follows this doctrine, putting his country before spending time with his family. He raises his sons to believe that their responsibilities as princes come before their own desires.
  • Odd Friendship: Leland is a ruthless, stern, and disciplined man who treats his sons harshly, yet he seems to genuinely cherish his friendship with the Pastel King — Jack — who is a dorky, kindly Large Ham. Their friendship has reached the point they intend to marry all Leland's sons to Jack's daughters and effectively join their kingdoms together.
  • Offing the Offspring: Ge tries to straight up KILL Frederick for getting in the way of his plans and attacking him to save Gwen. Ironically, he ends up (possibly) dying in a mutual kill when his eldest son saves him.
  • Parental Favoritism: Blatantly refers to Blaine as his "eldest and most preferred son" in front of Lance and Frederick.
  • Poor Communication Kills: He's spent years plotting to destroy Jack's life as revenge for Jack supposedly choosing Leelathae over their friendship. In all those years it's made apparent that Leland never thought to simply talk to Jack about the things he was angry about, which Jack would've probably tried to apologize for if he knew how Leland felt. By the end of the series, Leland's lost his friendship for good after Jack discovers everything his former bestie tried to do to his family.
  • Psychological Projection: Part of his revenge plan against Jack included thinking that his children would turn on him for being a “hypocrite” for agreeing to hand over the omnipotent clam. He even asks Maria and Lorena why they don’t hate Jack.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Is by far the finest fighter in the Plaid Kingdom (and possibly the entire story), able to take out the Pastel Kingdom's entire elite unit of ninja maids singlehandedly and appearing to possess enormously superhuman levels of strength, possibly due to being subjected in childhood to the same insane training regimen he now forces his sons through.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He is the most intimidating character introduced into the narrative so far, and the few times we see through his glasses, he has a red-eyed glare.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Back in his youth, if you gave him some softer features and a less combed-back haircut, then he would look almost indistinguiable from his youngest son, Frederick.
  • Tough Love: He believes his actions towards his children will toughen them up and prepare them for the harshness of the real world.
  • Uptown Boy: Twenty one years old and recently crowned, the Plaid King Leland met and married the eighteen-year-old Lower-Class Lout pet-shop worker Isolde.
  • Villain Has a Point: Subverted. When he launches his invasion of the Pastel Castle, Leland tries to entice Maria and Lorena to his side by pointing out how Jack's been a bad father to all of them. When he offers them all the freedom they want and a chance for payback, the girls scream at Leland that they want nothing to do with him. Even if their father's been smothering to them all their lives, and apparently values their dead mother more over them, they're not gonna side with someone who just invaded their home, tied them up, and revealed he's been trying to manipulate them into marrying his sons for years.

    The Plaid Queen

Queen Isolde of the Plaid Kingdom, née Durand

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/plaid_queen.png
Click here to see Isolde at 18

The Queen of the Plaid Kingdom. She constantly eats sweets and does not like the idea of arranging a marriage between her sons and the Pastel Princesses.

  • Abusive Parents:
    • Implied. Whilst she's Out of Focus in comparison to her husband in the first two seasons, the Queen's few appearances show that she interacts very little with her sons, shows no reaction to the Plaid King's abusive nature, and is part of the family Frederick feels never cared about him. It's also notable that her husband seems to be eager not to upset her.
    • Later tragically subverted. She knows her husband is a horrible person, but it's implied that he abuses her and it has made her too scared to confront him about it directly. She tried to be a loving mother, but the Plaid King didn't see this as part of a princely upbringing and had the palace staff take the children from her.
  • Apathetic Clerk: During a flashback, we see an 18-year-old Isolde working in a pet shop on the south side of the Plaid Kingdom, looking bored, chewing gum, and so preoccupied by her magazine she initially fails to realise the young man who just walked in is a young Leland.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: She's a deconstruction of the tale of the commoner who marries the prince. She caught her crush, presumably the richest and most powerful man in the kingdom, on the rebound, but their marriage lacks any affection. He also abuses their children and is implied to have abused her on top of not letting her show her children affection growing up.
  • Big Eater: In all her appearances so far, Queen Isolde has been shown eating, snacking, or with food on her face:
    • During her Early-Bird Cameo in Episode 16, she eats a bagel while her husband threatens their son.
    • During Lance's birthday party in Episode 53, Maria finds Queen Isolde at the dessert table. Isolde is eating a cupcake and ends up with frosting on her face.
    • During Gwen's dinner party in Episode 101, Queen Isolde is surprised at the quality of Gwen's homemade dessert and winds up with whipped cream around her mouth. When the Plaid Family leaves the party in Episode 103, she swipes three plates of cookies off the sideboard and into her purse. During the carriage ride home in Episode 105, she tells her sons she's forcing to family to attend an art exhibit in the Argyle Kingdom called "Beauty and the Feast" "...for culture." Later she appears in the hallway outside the Plaid King's study, angrily eating the cookies she'd taken earlier.
    • At the "124th Annual Artgyle Festival" in Episode 106, she shows up in exactly 1 panel... double fisting an ice cream cone and cotton candy.
    • In Episode 126, the Plaid King doesn't know where his wife is but says he expects to find her at the dessert table. A flashback to Leland and Isolde's first meeting in the same episode shows her chewing gum and reading a magazine article titled Desserts You'll Never Afford.
Prince Leland: I'D LIKE TO BUY THIS LLAMA AND PAMPER IT SO MUCH THAT IT LIVES A LONG TIME AND NEVER LEAVES ME!!
Izzy: Yeeaaahh, and I'd like to know what a "gold truffle cream broo-lee" tastes like, but ya don't see me slingin' around delusions of grandeur--
    • Played for Drama in Episode 134, when Leland chides Isolde for worrying about their sons after he's imprisoned them in the dungeon and demeans her parenting skills by telling her she can't possibly understand how to give them "a proper, royal upbringing". When he comments that she doesn't seem to be in dessert-ordering mood, Isolde responds through her sobs that she'll take two of everything. This gets subverted later on, when a flashback reveals she may have intentionally played up her sobbing (but was still legitimately upset to a degree) so Leland wouldn't notice he was actually signing a writ to abdicate the throne to her.
  • Broken Bird: She may have suspected early in her relationship that Leland never actually cared about her, and only proposed marriage to one-up Jack. She was too blinded by everything Leland offered her if she became queen, and years of being treated as an accessory and a broodmare have clearly taken its toll on her. That said, she still has inner strength to combat her husband any way she can, and she deeply cares for her sons while regretting that she had to hurt the Pastel Princesses to protect them.
  • Color Motif: White plaid, to contrast with Leland's black plaid.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: The first time Leland and Isolde met, she went bright red and started stumbling over her words, calling him "Your Hotness," "Your Hineyness," and "Your Hot Hineyness." Leland promptly asked her out.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Tricks her husband into signing a writ of abdication and steals his kingdom out from under him.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: She can be seen in two panels at the Plaid royal family breakfast table in Episode 16, but doesn't get her first line until Episode 53.
  • Foil: Surprisingly, she is one to her future daughter-in-law Maria. She is seen fangirling over her husband at the best when she first met him, just like Maria. It is implied that she was blinded by that when she married the Plaid King and was disappointed.
  • God Save Us from the Queen!: Played with. She initially seems cold, dismissive, and apathetic to almost everything around her. We then learn she's been actively trying to undermine the Plaid King's schemes even though she wasn't fully aware of what his goals were.
  • Good All Along: Turns out, Isolde opposed the Arranged Marriage because she was onto her husband’s scheme, and how the marriages were a vital part of it, but didn’t have enough knowledge of it to go off, or enough evidence to back her up. She knows she has to stop Leland, but is visibly remorseful that her way of stopping it had to be hurting the Pastel Princesses.
  • The Good Queen: She steals the Plaid Throne for herself to put an end to Leland's mad schemes, immediately halting the invasion the first chance she gets to save her sons and the Pastel Princesses.
  • Guile Heroine: She stole the throne out from Leland thanks to having his signature from all those dessert order forms he obliviously filled out for her in the past. And just to make sure the abdication of the throne went through, she ensured the Plaid Parliament got some nice bonus perks in the abdication writ.
  • Ice Queen: Her Color Motif is cold white, she communicates in Brutal Honesty, and treats her husband and future daughters-in-law very coldly. It's shown that she's been abused by her husband much like her sons, and she's trying to stop the Pastel Princesses from marrying the Plaid Princes out of fear of whatever the Plaid King is doing.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Has a pair.
  • Jerkass: Makes it quite clear to Maria that she purposefully ensured that she was never formally introduced to the Pastel princesses because she doesn't want any of them in her kingdom or anywhere near her sons. Subverted, its really because she knows her husband is up to no good.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: She says she hates the arranged marriages because none of the Pastel princesses truly know her sons. This isn't entirely incorrect, as while Frederick and Gwen have come to know and fall for one another, the princesses were initially only interested in the princes because they're hunks.
  • Love-Obstructing Parents: Seems to be indulging her husband's plan so far but makes it clear she believes the Arranged Marriage between her sons and the Pastel Princesses is nonsense and doesn't approve of their engagement.
  • Out of Focus: Justified. Despite the rest of her family getting plenty of focus and even some Character Development she is rarely seen and doesn't speak until "Episode 53"... in which she reveals she's purposefully been distancing herself from the Pastel Kingdom because she wants as little to do with the Pastel Princesses as possible.
  • Parents as People: She genuinely does love her children, but wasn't allowed to have any part in their upbringing on her husband's orders. She deeply regrets not doing more to shield them from Leland's abuse and admits culpability to how they turned out, but she firmly expresses her belief that her sons are all capable of being good people regardless of what their father's done to them. She's now doing what she can to stop her husband so all of them can be free from his control.
  • Rags to Royalty: Maria assumes that Isolde was born into high society like any other noble lady. Turns out, she was once a Lower-Class Lout whom Leland met in a pet shop on the "far south side" of the Plaid Kingdom after finding out Jack had fallen for Leelathae.
  • Stoic Woobie: She appears as cold, apathetic and silent most of the time, not paying attention to the abuse her sons experience from her husband. It's later revealed that she didn't use to be this way, in fact, she was incredibly lively during her youth, only falling to apathy when Leland took her sons away from her, causing her to resign and be the perfect queen he wants her to be in order to avoid his wrath.
  • Sweet Tooth: The Plaid Queen is very fond of sweets and desserts and is mostly shown eating sweets.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: Subverted then played straight. Flashbacks reveal both of them were good looking when they were young, but in the present Isolde has aged a lot better than Leland. It's implied Leland's haggard face and balding hair happened as a result of his obsession with destroying Jack's life and being haunted by Lilyth's ghost when he stole her portrait.

    Blaine

Prince Blaine of the Plaid Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/prince_blaine.png

The eldest prince of the Plaid Kingdom who is engaged to Princess Maria. Aged 20.

  • The Ace: He is amazing at everything he does.
  • Aloof Big Brother: To Lance and — mainly — Frederick, he likes to present himself as an unassailable wall superior to them in every way.
  • Big Brother Bully: Zig-Zagged towards Frederick. Blaine is very vocal about his irritation with Frederick's shortcomings as a prince and often berates him for his behavior, however, most of his scoldings are peppered with genuinely helpful advice about going after what you want and having more confidence in yourself. He is willing to go as far as to hit and let his father imprison Frederick as well, if only because he's misguided into thinking it's best for him.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Both he and Lance are horrified to learn Frederick was bullied as a child and silently agree to make up for lost time by going after the now grown-up bullies. Despite being torn, ultimately he is willing to go against his father to protect his youngest brother Frederick, and not for love of Maria.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Blaine initially appears to be a nice guy and a real Prince Charming, though he’s very condescending towards Benedict. He was also secretly in on his fathers plan the whole time. Though he did develop genuine feelings for Maria, unlike Lance, his guilt is not enough to betray his father and proves he’s willing to do whatever it takes to stay ahead. He also has no issue insulting Gwen’s appearance once the engagements are called off. So him slapping Frederick before seemed to have just been a nice guy act.
  • Broken Pedestal:
    • Subverted. At first, Maria is little more than a Loony Fan for Blaine, believing him to be "flawless from head to toe" and obsessing over him. However, the Plaid Queen’s Jerkass Has a Point moment and Beckett’s unaware-of-her-true-identity advice leads her to realize that she wants to learn about Blaine, flaws and all. When she sees him fail for the first time, she at first appears to desert him at the contest. However, a Wham Shot shows her crashing back into the contest with the Blaine Fan Club, dressed as cheerleaders, followed by her leading a cheer for Blaine so he can win the contest. Afterwards, she assures Blaine that she will be there for him for his failures as well as his successes, and that she’s not rooting for his perfection, but for just him.
    • Played straight later on when Maria finds out that Blaine covered for Frederick believing Gwen was ugly. She questions if he thinks the same way about her and Lorena, and Blaine accidentally blurts out that they are "actually" beautiful. Maria tearfully dumps him immediately.
  • Character Development: At the very end of the story. See Walking the Earth.
  • Color Motif: Red.
  • Contractual Purity: invoked He's unaware of this but his fan club seem convinced that he's not allowed to be in a relationship since he belongs to his fans.
  • Cunning Linguist: Can speak five different languages.
  • Condescending Compassion: His theme for the gala was “curses” and meant to provide funds for charities that deal with them. However, it’s apparent he considers curses like a disease and has little understanding of them. He offered voodoo dolls as raffle prizes and the devour was spooky.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: He puts the final nail in the coffin for the engagement between the Pastel Princesses and the Plaid Princes. When Maria suggests Blaine and Lance think she and Lorena are ugly too, Blaine angrily blurts out that the two are "actually" beautiful compared to Gwen. After a moment of Stunned Silence, Maria throws her engagement ring in Blaine's face.
  • Fatal Flaw: His fear of not meeting his expectations. This causes him to disregard any feelings he has towards Frederick and Maria to go along with his fathers plan, even though deep down he knows it’s wrong.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He smacked Frederick for calling Gwen ugly and acted like she was still a decent match. But, once the true nature of the Plaid Kingdoms plans are revealed, it's reframed as him just trying to ensure Frederick doesn't screw up the plan as he later calls her the ugliest princess himself.
  • Freaky Is Cool: In his effort to get to know Maria better, she winds up soaked in fruit punch and confessing to being a Loony Fan with an obsessive crush on him. Rather than be put off by her, he finds that she looks most beautiful when she's showing her imperfections.
  • Hidden Disdain Reveal: It's shown he's always believed Gwen was ugly even when he smacked Frederick for saying it in the tenth chapter, stating Maria and Lorena are actually beautiful compared to her and later calling Gwen ugly while talking with his father.
    • He also shows some disgust and fear of cursed people after he discovers what the CPC actually is.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: Despite being a bit of a Big Brother Bully to Frederick he does attempt to stop Lance saying embarrassing things about their little brother in front of Gwendolyn, and he also stops Leopold poaching Gwen from Frederick at a party, although, that has arguably more to do with his own grudge against the Argyle Kingdom than helping Frederick.
  • Hypocrite: Accused Lieutenant Beckett Dandridge of only Loving a Shadow when it came to Princess Maria, but it's then pointed out to him that Blaine is practically a stranger to his own fiancée too. To his credit, Blaine decides to improve himself and get to know Maria better.
  • Jerkass to One: He’s pretty rude to Beckett Dandridge since he knows he has a crush on Maria and rubs the fact that he’ll never be with her like him in his face.
  • Jumped Off The Slippery Slope: Downplayed, Blaine doesn’t lose his sanity, but members of his fan club leaving, Laverne finding a new lust object, his father starting to praise Frederick while criticizing him, and some other things hit his ego pretty hard.
  • Loony Fan: Even though he knew they booked Bozart for the Gala, Blaine goes all fangirl when the musician makes his grand entrance.
  • Loophole Abuse: He comes up with the plan to respect the Pastel King's wishes for the Plaid Princes to not enter the palace by serenading the princesses from outside it.
  • Loving a Shadow: Realizes his acts of devotion in courting Maria are immature and superficial after Beckett confronts him about it and claims she'll leave him once his shallow tricks wear off. Blaine absorbs the criticism and quickly makes efforts to rectify this and get to know his fiancée on a deeper and more emotional level.
  • My Greatest Failure: Blaine is perfect at everything. However, he only placed second to the Prince of the Argyle Kingdom at the Inter-Kingdom Piano Showcase finals last year and he feels like he'll never live it down (which members of the Argyle Kingdom enjoy rubbing in his face).
  • Prince Charming: Blaine is the picture of a dashing, charismatic and gallant heir to the throne. Deconstructed later as his insecurities are revealed.
  • Redemption Rejection: Even after Prez has a heart to heart with him, he still is unable to let go of his fears and tries to attack her. Thankfully he gets knocked out by her spider transformation.
    • He ends up performing a Heroic Sacrifice to save Frederick from their father, however.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: His "personal brand" and modeling career brings in 2% of the Plaid Kingdom's GDP and raises awareness for numerous charitable foundations.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Has one with his two brothers, Lance and Frederick, having been raised by their father to compete with each other since birth for love and praise.
  • The Unfavorite: He's deeply afraid of becoming this. See Fatal Flaw.
  • Walking the Earth: After he betrays his father to save Frederick, literally falls from a tremendous height (which he paralleled to his greatest fear of losing his perfect status and falling from grace) yet miraculously survives, he lets go of his fears or at least gains the confidence too. After that, Prez and Whitey’s words sink in and Blaine deliberately sheds his plaid shirt and continue his own path at the bottom rather than return to rule alongside his brothers.

    Lance

Prince Lance of the Plaid Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/prince_lance.png

The second eldest prince of the Plaid Kingdom who is engaged to Princess Lorena. He is 19.

  • Achievements in Ignorance: He managed to defeat one of Suzanna's disgruntled fencing suitors who was attacking her with a knife one-handed, however, he was completely unaware of the danger and simply reacting out of the grief of losing the last chip in his snack bag.
  • Ambiguously Brown: Has a noticeably darker skin tone than the rest of his family.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Both he and Blaine are horrified to learn Frederick was bullied as a child (and didn't tell them about it for years) and silently agree to make up for lost time by going after the now grown-up bullies.
  • Big Eater: He has a very large appetite, reportedly being able to eat eleven slices of pie in a single sitting. He's also shown interest in eating Laverne's snacks and eating food even after it's been on the ground.
  • The Big Guy: Amongst the three Plaid Princes he's indisputably the strongest and most skilled in combat.
  • Book Dumb: He has no clue where the library is located in his own house because how infrequently he visits it.
  • Bad Liar: When Blaine non-too-subtly hints that Lance shouldn't tell the Pastel Princesses the embarrassing details about why Frederick is running late to a date, Lance decides that claiming his little brother is "taking a long pee" is a workable lie.
  • Broken Pedestal: To Lorena when she finds out Lance helped cover up Frederick’s belief that Gwen was ugly, and how their father forced him to go through with the engagement spend time with Gwen.
  • Color Motif: Blue.
  • Cool Big Bro: Downplayed. Lance is the only member of Frederick's family who always shows concern for him when he's been pushed to physical exhaustion, injured or is emotionally compromised.
  • Dumb Jock: Lance loves combat sports and parties with keg stands but he's far from the sharpest sword in the armory. Frederick notes that Lance only learnt how to tie his own shoes last year.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: He obtained the scar on his cheek when he unintentionally saved Suzanna Winchester from a knife-wielding attacker. He chose not to treat it because he always wanted a cool scar and it has done nothing to lessen his attractiveness.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Though he reluctantly sided with his father at first, he later decides to betray him due to his feelings for Lorena.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: Admits that watching Lorena KO eight amusement park clowns was pretty sexy after it stopped being terrifying.
  • Just Friends: How he views his relationship with Suzanna Winchester.
  • Literal-Minded: When Blaine tells him to "go pick up Frederick" he does exactly that.
  • Lovable Jock: Lance is a good guy but a bit of a meathead.
  • Military Academy: He attended it and excelled, his little brother wasn't quite so lucky.
  • Oblivious to Love: Whilst he's happy to marry Lorena he is completely blind to Suzanna Winchester's crush on him.
  • Rugged Scar: Played straight and exploited by Lance. He got his facial scar during an honest-to-god rescue of a lady (even if he wasn't aware that he was doing it at the time), but he then deliberately chose not to treat the wound so the resulting scar would scream "this is a badass" even louder.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Has one with his two brothers, Blaine and Frederick, having been raised by their father to compete with one another basically since birth.
  • Too Much Alike: Suzanna says he and Lorena are this since they BOTH want to be in charge of THEIR kingdoms armies and argue on which of them will move to the others kingdom.
  • Warrior Prince: Whilst all the princes of the Plaid Kingdom were forced to join the military, Lance excelled as a fighter.

    Frederick

Prince Frederick of the Plaid Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/prince_frederick.png

The youngest prince of the Plaid Kingdom who is engaged to Princess Gwendolyn. Aged 17.

  • Accidental Murder: Is absolutely traumatized for a while when he thinks he's committed this. He thought he startled Gwen and caused her to fall to her death off a cliff. In fact, it was Monika wearing one of Gwen's dress and she was fine because she just turned into a bird and flew away. So when Gwen turns up alive and well he thinks she's an immortal witch who has come back to haunt him.
  • Ambiguously Bi: He was initially attracted to Jamie, after mistaking him for Gwendolyn, and is mortified once he realizes his mistake. Frederick is irritated to find this still doesn't stop him from finding Jamie attractive, although that might just be because it's Jamie.
  • Black Sheep: Frederick's father and brothers are manly and excel at being popular, successful and strong, whilst he would rather sit in his room reading books all day. All the men in his family have to undergo mandatory Military Academy training, and Frederick only survived by specializing in administrative support.
  • Book Dumb: Ironically, despite his love for books, he specifically only loves fiction books. This leaves him with very little applicable knowledge and his grades in school were far below acceptable levels. At the same time, later episodes will show that he's more practical-minded than anything, his skills having more to do with organization and strategy than textbook knowledge.
  • Broken Bird: Frederick's experiences as a child crushed his naïve and innocent spirit and he grew into a bit of a Jerkass because of it, believing that since nobody would ever respect or care about him, there was no reason for him to care about others. Then he starts to get to know Gwen.
  • Broken Pedestal: Gwen thinks that Frederick was faking his affections for her after discovering that his father had given him an order to get close to her. And he’s too traumatized by the belief that he’s the cause of Gwen’s suffering to tell her that isn’t the case.
  • Butt-Monkey: In a story about cursed royalty it's impressive that Frederick is perhaps one of the least fortunate characters in the story. His luck is just plain terrible; if something can go wrong for him it will and he's quite literally his own worst enemy.
  • Color Motif: Green, which matches with Gwen.
  • Defrosting Ice King: He acts quite cold towards Gwen at first, due to her appearance clashing with his idea of what the girl of his dreams should look like (i.e. conventionally attractive like Jamie). And even though several people, including his family, call him out on this shallow attitude, he maintains it for a pretty large part of the story. It's only after seeing how kind Gwen is that he reevaluates his opinion of her and he eventually even develops romantic feelings for her.
  • Deuteragonist: Gets as much narrative focus and Character Development as Gwendolyn.
  • Dude, She's Like in a Coma: Though he's grown to love Gwen very much by that point, Frederick is still hesitant to kiss her when she's under a sleeping curse due to finding it wrong.
  • Fairytale Motif: His relationship with Gwen parallels that of his favourite in-universe fairy tale: "The Tiniest Prince" in which a prince is pulled out of a hole by an angel. Gwen helps inspire Frederick to pull himself out of his negativity and fatalistic way of doing things, although he comes to accept that there's only so much other people can do and rather than waiting around for someone else to fix his problems he has to put the work in himself too.
  • The Fatalist: Believes that he'll fail at most anything he tries to do so has given up on trying.
  • Foil: To Gwen. Both are the youngest in a Royal family, both have a green Color Motif, and both were born warm, kind, and enthusiastic people eager to share their passion and love with others. However, Gwendolyn has always had a supportive family whilst Frederick's ridicule him. Both of them were quite content and happy whilst they lived sheltered lives, but once exposed to the cruelties of the outside world – Frederick's hobbies and Gwen's appearance both being harshly criticized – their self-esteem was "shattered" (in Gwen's case) or "wilted" (in Frederick's). The biggest difference is Gwen didn't let her issues stop her from reaching out to other people, whilst Frederick closed himself off from the world.
  • His Own Worst Enemy: He realizes he is this during his very first time doing meditation with Whitney. Finally accepting that the source of the majority of the suffering he's gone through has been caused by his own actions. Once he learns this, he begins working on making peace with his childhood trauma and emotional immaturity.
  • Hot Guy, Ugly Wife: What would happen should his Arranged Marriage to Gwendolyn come to pass. Whilst initially resistant to the idea, he begins to warm up to Gwendolyn over time.
  • I Hate Past Me: He’s not proud of his childhood self and he later becomes ashamed of what he initially thought of Gwen when they first met.
  • Insecure Love Interest: For Gwen. Due to his initial rejection of their marriage, when he finally starts developing feelings for her he feels like he has no right to her.
  • Jerkass: The moment he sees Gwendolyn's appearance he immediately loses interest and becomes desperate to call off the Arranged Marriage. He gets better.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Pointedly averted. It's made very clear that while Gwen's positive influence helps in reducing his fatalistic and self-absorbed attitude, the actual improvement still has to come from him.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Episode 132 reveals that he was the only Plaid Kingdom brother not to be in on his father's plan to use the Pastel Princesses to get back at Jack.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: In Episode 132. He finds out Gwen overheard him call her "really ugly", and that Gwen sees herself "shattered" in the mirror. He has a panic attack, believing that he is the cause of all her turmoil.
  • Only Friend: Slowly realises that Gwen is this for him. However, he eventually makes other friends such as Whitney.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: : Frederick is a handsome and capable young man who is outshone in looks, charm, strength, popularity, confidence, and practically every other field by his older brothers.
  • Poor Communication Kills:
    • From his first meeting with Gwendolyn he misinterpreted a lot of her genuine well-wishes and concerns as threats due to her appearance, which led to a whole host of misunderstandings between them.
    • Ramped up when he accidentally finds the Cursed Princess Club after following Gwen into the forest. Due to Gwen not really keeping them updated on his improved behavior, they still only know him as the Jerkass Prince Charmless who is largely responsible for Gwen's self-esteem issues. This leads to them treating him with open hostility once their cover is blown, until he reveals he wants to ask Gwen out on a date. After hearing that, they briefly wonder if they misjudged him — until Monika arrives and identifies him as "the bad man who pushed [her] off the cliff".
  • Prince Charmless: Deconstructed. At first, he seems like the typical Romantic False Lead for Gwendolyn as a Jerkass prince unwilling to give her a chance because he deems her ugly. However, after his Freudian Excuse is revealed and he undergoes Character Development, he and Gwen agree to be Just Friends. Then Frederick realizes he might be developing genuine feelings for her.
  • Shrinking Violet: Frederick would much rather hide away in a library with a bunch of books than interact with other people. A lifetime of being the Butt-Monkey, being hopelessly outmatched by his brothers, and having all his interests dismissed or destroyed by his father has led to him growing into a bit of a nervous wreck.
  • Sibling Rivalry: With his brothers, Blaine and Lance, unfortunately for Frederick his older siblings push him a lot because they're frustrated he gave up trying.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Frederick starts out as a scrawny, sheltered prince who's main purpose is to be given the middle finger by life itself. But after several rounds of character development, he's learned to not only take every metaphorical and literal hit that comes his way, but also dish it back as evidenced by his using Leland's strength against him and literally putting his father's head through a wall.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: While he was never a complete jerk (not intentionally, anyway), getting to know Gwen helped him reconnect with his gentler, more empathetic self that's been suppressed for years by his family's coldness towards him.
  • Trauma Button: Sunflowers. They remind him of the nickname given to him by the other princes at St. Cerulean's Inter-Kingdom Military Academy for Royal Boys and how they made him "wilt" by locking him in a small, dark chest for hours whilst his classmates ransacked his room and destroyed his beloved books and model ships.
  • Trauma Conga Line: Frederick has been going through one since birth. He was born with a weak constitution and so had to be homeschooled whilst his brothers racked up accolades in the public eye. Then, when he went to Military Academy he was mercilessly bullied by the other princes, who locked him in a chest and destroyed his beloved books and model ships. His brothers get engaged to beautiful wives whilst he feels slighted by being given Gwen and humiliated when he mistakes her brother Jamie for his intended bride. When he wants to call off the wedding, his father threatens to kill him. He is then forced to carry a llama miles from one kingdom to the next. Said llama proceeds to push him off a cliff. Due to a misunderstanding, he is fooled into thinking he accidently pushed Gwen to her death from the very same cliff. After trekking miles, weighed down by guilt, he finds her very much alive but she seemingly tells him that she "knows what he did" and will eternally haunt him for it. Then a date at the amusement park results in him being interrogated by Jamie in the Tunnel of Love and falling into the filthy park water. Then a stray truncheon causes him to fall off yet another cliff and he accidentally injures Gwendolyn when she saves him. Although, after he and Gwen work together to pull him back up over the cliff he slowly begins improving his life and redeeming himself for his poor behavior towards Gwen, although it does little to stymie his constant misfortune.
  • The Unfavorite: His father clearly despises him and makes it blatantly obvious he prefers Blaine the most, and Lance second. The man even threatens to impale Frederick to the dining room wall if he doesn't go along with his orders to marry Gwendolyn.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: As a child, Frederick was dorky and eager to share his fantasy books with his classmates since they had been the only thing to keep him company during him being sick in his childhood. The other princes at the Inter-Kingdom Military Academy stomped any and all sweetness out of him pretty ruthlessly because Kids Are Cruel.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Gender-Inverted, while he is normally a Non-Action Guy, in Episode 165 when he thinks King Leland had hurt Gwen (which he hadn't but was most likely about to), he does not hesitate to fight back against his father to protect Gwen.
  • Weak, but Skilled: No one passes up an opportunity to comment on Frederick's small stature and weak constitution, as well as his inability to measure up to his older brothers. But when given a chance to shine, Frederick shows that his real strengths lie in brains rather than brawn, and he has a true knack for organization, general administrative duties and strategic planning (the last of which helps the CPC and the Pastel guards turn the tide against the invading Plaid Kingdom).
  • You Monster!: When Gwen's sisters find out he called her ugly and start seeing the true extent of how much it damaged her self esteem, Lorena angrily calls Frederick a monster and orders him to get away from her little sister.
  • Youngest Child Wins: After his mother overthrows her father she intended for him and his brothers to rule jointly. However, with Lance declining the throne since he never really wanted it and Blaine deciding to leave for his own “spiritual journey” that leaves Frederick and the sole (future) king.

    Laverne
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/laverne.png

The Plaid Kingdom's most pampered llama.

  • The Alcoholic: Is shown to indulge in a wide variety of fancy cocktails over the course of the comic.
  • The Load: Quite literally for Frederick, being a llama his father repeatedly forces him to carry between kingdoms.
  • Morality Pet: Deconstructed. Leland bought her to pamper and spoil as a replacement for his friendship with Jack, and she's thus the only living thing he treats with genuine kindness and love. The fact that he can only show love and attention to a llama he spent years turning into a Spoiled Brat over his own wife and children shows that Laverne's role in the Plaid Family only makes Leland look worse.
  • Replacement Goldfish: She was bought by the then-twenty-one-year-old Leland to soothe his heartache over losing his best friend Jack to Leelathae. Leland bought her because she was pretty and lustrous, just like Jack back then. Leland then proceeded to pamper and spoil her so that she would stay with him forever.
  • Spoiled Brat: She shows no appreciation for the efforts of others and merely asking when her next luxury will be coming her way. Deconstructed as it’s revealed that Leland deliberately spoiled her after buying her from a pet shop out of a loneliness complex, pampering her specifically so that she would not be any way tempted to leave him.

    Tattersall

Commander Tattersall

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tattersall.png

The commander of the Plaid Kingdom's special operations unit and King Leland's personal army during his Siege against the Pastel Kingdom.

  • Ambiguous Gender: With being immune to Princess Deianera's curse and never really being referred to in third person, Tatersall's gender actually is is murky with him being called 'Sir', the only thing sorta hinting that he's male.
  • Ambition Is Evil: He wants to reach the top and be recognized by the Plaid King.
  • Determinator: He may flinch a little but nothing, no matter how bizarre or terrifying can shake this guy off. He stands his ground against the Decoy Witch, Curtis and even Prez's Spider Form all in the name of the invasion.
  • No-Sell: He's somehow immune to Princess Deianera's voice of anguish with no explanation given why.
  • No Indoor Voice: This guy is often on the top of his lungs, yelling at the plaid soldiers for their failures.
  • The Dragon: To King Leland, more so than his sons.
  • Undying Loyalty: He's so loyal to the king that he's willing to strike down Lance, once the prince began having doubts on the king's plans. He also immediately declares treason on the other soldiers who expresses their own doubts or fears.

    The Plaid Army

Plaid Kingdom Special Operations Unit

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/plaid_army.png

King Leland's personal army and the main invading force during the Invasion of the Pastel Kingdom.

  • Faceless Goons: They all look the same due to wearing the same plaid armor, with Suzanna being the only exception mostly due to her hair standing out.
  • Mook–Face Turn: Some of the soldiers decide to defect, much like Suzanna, and decide to follow Lance instead.
  • Punch-Clock Villains: It's very clear that the army is mostly consisted of citizens of the Plaid Kingdom just doing their job and aren't actively malicious.

The Cursed Princess Club (CPC)

    Prez

Princess Calpernia of the Polygon Kingdom, The President "Prez" of the Cursed Princess Club

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princess_calpernia.png

Princess and the former heir of the Polygon Kingdom and the enigmatic Founder and President of the Cursed Princess Club.

  • Accidental Murder: She is haunted by the first time she turned into a were-spider since she thinks she ate Prince Whitney of the Monochrome Kingdom.
  • Action Girl: Trained with Curtis to be capable in hand-to-hand combat scenarios so she can rescue princesses in need.
  • Ambiguously Brown: Prez and her family seem to have a darker skin tone than most other characters in the story. Between that and her hair seeming to be curly, this has led to people envisioning her as having different ethnic characteristics. Since the art style doesn't detail facial features too much, the aforementioned hair is blue, and there's no reference to any ethnicities fictional or real in the story, this is probably mostly a matter of style. That said, some fan artists make a point of drawing her as having more pronounced African features.
  • Animal Motif: Spiders. Symbolically, she's specifically supposed to evoke a black widow, as she's believed to have eaten her own fiancee, like female black widows are notorious for eating the males. Her spiderweb-shaped headgear is also supposed to be evocative of a literal widow's veil.
  • Arachnid Appearance and Attire: She favors dark clothes and has cobweb-like nets in her hair (this last part actually turns out to be unintentional, since she intended the nets to be widow's veils, assuming to have killed her fiance, — though even that still evoked arachnids, by way of "black widow"). She also inhabits all the positive qualities of spiders in her attitude by being intelligent, patient and creative. And once a month she transforms into a giant one.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: Pulls this with Saffron against the bandits they encounter outside the Princel's clubhouse.
  • Be Yourself: Her whole philosophy that she tries to teach in the Cursed Princess Club is that they should all love themselves in their current forms and not let their curses define who they are by dwelling on what they've lost.
  • Curse: Hers is a source of mystery and rumor for a large part of the story but it eventually turns out that her former fiancé accidently cursed her to turn into a giant carnivorous spider once a month.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: The President suffered from what is implied to be severe depression due to her stifled upbringing as the heir to the throne of a powerful kingdom. She eventually improved after being treated by Asa — a nurse — who showed her how to have fun outside the palace and how to help less fortunate people. But her jealous fiance, Prince Whitney, bought a cursed potion to get revenge on the man he felt had "stolen" his future wife. He plotted to use it to turn Asa into a tiny spider and crush him in front of Calpernia. However, not only did his servant purchase the wrong potion (were-spider rather than a common house spider) but Calpernia ended up Taking the Bullet on the syringe. She transformed into a were-spider and (seemingly) ate Prince Whitney. Both the Monochrome and Polygon kingdom agreed to cover-up the entire scandalous affair and as an unwed, cursed and murderous princess, Calpernia was banished from her homeland. Luckily, her father ensured she would live comfortably in a vacation home hidden deep in the forests of the quaint Pastel kingdom and have all her needs tended to by Curtis.
  • The Exile: She was banished from the Polygon Kingdom by her parents after a dreadful scandal. Her father told her not to worry about it too much; they had multiple daughters for this exact reason and provided her with a vacation home hidden deep in the forests of the Pastel Kingdom to live in.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: She is cool, composed, and very beautiful. It's strongly implied that Princess Abbi might have a bit of a crush on her (particularly after Prez went out of her way to give Abbi a wonderful Prom Night when Abbi's attempt at a temporary Curse Reversal potion failed), and when Syrah jokingly proclaims the CDC to be the Prez's personal harem, everyone except Calpernia herself just rolls with it.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Her name is eventually revealed to be Calpernia but everyone calls her "Prez" (as a diminutive form of "President").
  • Florence Nightingale Effect: Subverted. She was never in love with Asa — the nurse who treated her depression — though she cherished him as a friend. She only claimed to be in love with him to be to get out of her arranged marriage with Prince Whitney.
  • Hates Wearing Dresses: Downplayed. She much prefers to wear her pantsuits since her parents used to make her wear dresses all the time, but she isn't averse to wearing them if they're a uniform for volunteer work.
  • Heroic BSoD: She's briefly paralyzed with fear when she sees Whitney. However, she almost immediately overcomes it and plants herself firmly between him and the CPC, stating that if he even thinks about hurting them, she'll kill him for real this time.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": Episode 94 reveals that Prez's current "Princess Charming" persona has been inspired by another power lady whom she has met as a child at one of her parents' royal receptions, but whose name she has never learned.
  • Lady in a Power Suit: After her Dark and Troubled Past she changed from dresses into pantsuits to reflect her more confident personality.
  • The Leader: Calpernia (or rather, her post-exile "Prez" persona) is a natural leader, thanks to a combination of determination, social and management skills, and above-average athletic ability. This is particularly evident in how rudderless the CPC appears during her regular absences, such as at the start of the dinner arc.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: She founded the Cursed Princess Club so that royalty that are misunderstood or abused by society would have a safe place that supports them. As such, she acts as this for many of the princesses there such as Gwen and Abbi.
  • Magic Pants: Appears to be the rule for curse-based transformations in the setting. Her giant were-spider form never seems to be wearing her tattered clothes and she's always dressed in whatever she last did in her human form when she turns back. With that said, since her case is played a lot less for laughs and a lot more for drama (sometimes even borderline horror) than Monika's, and because the transformation itself never happens "on-screen", some fans have apparently speculated as for whether this is necessarily the case (it seems very likely, though: while it may be conceivable that perhaps e.g. Curtis helps her get back into her clothes while she's still asleep the mornings after, in her flashback she's back in her dress right after transforming for the very first time and it'd be very out-of-character for her to worry about clothing before it occurs to her see might've just eaten a guy).
    • The final season reveals that her transformation indeed takes the shape of a magical cloud, like Monika's, albeit a more ominous-looking one, meaning that this trope is canonically in effect.
  • Menstrual Menace: During Prez's "time of the month" she transforms into a giant were-spider.
  • Nap-Inducing Speak: Despite being beloved by the members of the club, they all admit that the Prez's lectures are tedious, repetitive and boring. Their response to her lecture of beauty rituals of the Chartreusean Era is to borrow Jolie's face masks so they can pretend to stay awake.
  • Not So Stoic: Invoked and discussed at length, making it a major part of Prez' character arc and in the service of the story's themes of healthily coping with trauma and building emotional well-being. Being cool, composed and capable, and the Club's leader, Prez is always the one who is most vocally going on about the importance of loving oneself as they are, curse and all, focusing on the future rather than trying to change the past, and finding strength in adversity (even claiming that being cursed was "the best thing that ever happened to [her]", because it gave her the strength and the freedom from social conventions that she needed to dedicate herself to helping others, something that for the first time in her life made her feel truly happy). She even scolds Abbi for trying to make everyone "24-hour curse reversal potions", claiming that the healthy way to deal with their curses isn't to try and deny them but to move forward from them. While she means well, this sort of attitude can sometimes turn-off or even make other Club members feel more frustrated with themselves - after all, who is she to tell them to just deal with their own problems (which, to each individual, seem overwhelming) when she seems to have no problems of her own? Her major point of Character Growth comes when, after learning that Whitney's been alive this whole time and realizing that, contrary to what she's been thinking, she doesn't really want to take revenge anymore, she has an emotional breakdown and tearfully admits to both the others and herself that, yes, she does actually hate her curse - whether the constant, day-to-day difficulties it causes her (e.g. having to sleep in a locked barn to protect her loved ones from herself) or the life opportunities it's cost her (e.g. her parents being ashamed of her, not being able to fit with normal society). This personal growth is evident in the final season, when, faced with the prospect of acquiring a magical object that can remove curses, she admits that the reason she was opposed to the idea previously was in large part because she didn't think it was really possible, and that if it was, she wouldn't mind getting rid of her curse (although she quickly concludes others do need it more than her). Where this ties into the story's themes of mental health is that, by behaving like that, Calpernia isn't painted as being a hypocrite: she's being an emotionally healthy human being. As the story points out, many people have "curses" (a past trauma, a physical or mental disability, something about themselves that they're unhappy with, etc.), and just because she's right in that one shouldn't let their "curse" define them or dominate their lives, and it's even possible to grow stronger because of them, doesn't mean they have to love them. A "curse" isn't, by itself, a good thing, and everyone, no matter how composed, can sometimes have a dark moment of frustration or anger where they wish they didn't have to deal with theirs. And in those moments exactly, it's important to practice what Prez herself preaches and rely on the love and support of those who care for them rather than trying to tell oneself it's alright.
  • Only Sane Woman: Among the more eccentric members of the club she maintains order and is the only one capable of taking their well-meaning but often insanely impractical ideas and crafting actual plans and activities out of them.
  • Our Werebeasts Are Different: She was cursed into becoming a were-spider by a magic potion which causes her to transform into a giant carnivorous spider she has no control over once a month.
  • The Paragon: The Prez's self-positive and proactive attitude is an inspiration for everyone in her club, even if she is far from perfect at maintaining it at all times. However, the fact that she always does her best to live a fulfilling life despite her curse is enough for the other members to do so, too.
  • Prince Charming: A gender-flipped version. Her outfit and general behavior invoke this trope, and Syrah outright lampshades it in episode 94 by dubbing it a "Princess Charming" persona.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Within the Cursed Princess Club she can be trusted to try to keep a level head, an open mind, and maintain order among her eccentric friends.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Since becoming a were-spider she learnt she could communicate with spiders, which she essentially turned into a spy network to warn her of strangers approaching the CPC clubhouse and to inform her about any cursed princesses that may need rescuing.
  • Supporting Leader: While the bulk of the comic is Gwen's Coming of Age Story and her budding romance with Frederick, the Prez is by far the most proactive, for instance, in unearthing the mystery of Gwen's Missing Mom.
  • Tritagonist: After Gwendolyn and Frederick, Calpernia gets the most focus within the story, often leading any CPC subplots going on.
  • Weaponized Headgear: Her tiara is a carbon-steel headband with five sharpened spikes affixed to it, specifically designed to be discrete and deadly. Curtis implies that she's been trained in how to use it for self defense.

    Curtis

Curtis

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/curtis.png

The Club President's butler and assistant.

  • Apologetic Attacker: He feels horrible about having had to kick Spider-Prez in the head to protect Gwen, even though Prez assures him she's grateful he kept her from taking another life.
  • Battle Butler: He is a skilled martial artist capable of fighting off the President's attacks when she turns into a giant, mindless spider and rescue Gwen. He is also trained Calpernia.
Princess Calpernia: For the next few months, all I did was train under Curtis's... unique tutelage. As much as I was hesitant to trust in his odd methods... It seems like butlers really knew how to fight.
  • Consummate Professional: As befits a butler.
  • Cultured Badass: He's able to play the violin, press your sheets, and kick your ass.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: In episode 94, Prez admits that she resorts to calling upon Curtis whenever she needs a "miracle" to happen fast.
  • If You Ever Do Anything to Hurt Her...: A non-romantic version in chapter 105. While waiting for the other princesses, Curtis makes it pointedly clear to Whitney that while he might be getting more acceptance within club, that his crimes haven't been forgotten and should he so much as think of attempting anything with Calpernia, he'd better sleep with both eyes open.
  • Mercy Kill Arrangement: Downplayed. The Prez only ever expresses gratitude to Curtis for any actions he takes — even if they cause her bodily harm — so long as it prevents her from taking another life. Curtis, however, is always reluctant and deeply apologetic.
  • No-Sell: Syrah's attempts at flirting with him are met with a sharp shut-down.
Curtis: "I don't know what you ladies have scheduled in your planner for today. But I hope you have something loftier in mind than utilizing your extreme privilege to objectify the person who cooks and cleans after you."
  • Undying Loyalty: To the Prez. He was the only servant assigned to her side during her exile and she earned his respect with her desire to grow stronger and help people in similar situations to her rather than let herself sink into self-pity and despondency.

    Abbi

Princess Abbi of the Neon Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princessabbi.png
Click here to see Abbi before her curse

Princess of the Neon Kingdom. Despite being only fifteen-years-old she was cursed to look like an old lady.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Her curse causes her to be ostracized by her classmates at school.
  • Ambiguously Bi: She decides that if Bobby turns her down then she still has Prez as her "backup crush."
  • The Baby of the Bunch: It's easy to forget, given her appearance, that she's the youngest but she is the princess in the club that most frequently shows off both her immaturity and vulnerability.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Out of all the CPC members she’s the one who’s most openly spiteful to Frederick and outright states her desire to punch him at first. Mainly because she knows what it’s like to be rejected by someone she likes for not looking “beautiful”.
  • Curse: She was given a box that would give her everlasting happiness as long as she didn't open it. Obviously, she did and was cursed to look like an old woman despite being only 15.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Whilst usually played for laughs, Abbi being cursed to look like an old woman at a young age is terrible. Her former crush – Bobby – is disrespectful to her and none of her former friends want to hang out with her anymore.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Calls Frederick an "old geezer" for liking books and model ships.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Assumes that Gwendolyn was cursed to switch bodies with a witch and feels terrible for making assumptions when she learns that Gwen was just born with her appearance.
  • Minor with Fake I.D.: Obviously averted. Abbi has no trouble obtaining alcohol because even if she told the store owner she's fifteen, they'd never believe her.
  • Unrequited Love: She can't be with her crush Bobby because he's still a fifteen-year-old, whilst physically she looks like a pensioner.

    Aurelia

Princess Aurelia of the Gilded Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princessaurelia.png

Princess of the Gilded Kingdom cursed to have anything that touches her mouth disintegrate.

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She hides it well but she is quite annoyed about Gwen being allowed to join the club despite not having a curse, and plots to get her kicked out of the club.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: As pointed out by Abbi and later Renee if Aurelia had not kept her problems about Gwen being in the club despite not having a curse to herself, they could have helped her work through her envious feelings toward Gwen. Instead talking with her fellow club members she chose to attempt to get Gwen kicked out of the club instead, only to get kick out herself. All of which could have been easily avoided if she had just been more open about her feelings.
  • Curse: She was (accidentally) cursed by her step-father via an enchanted necklace to have a mouth that disintegrates anything it touches – meaning any attempt to cure it with True Love's Kiss runs a serious risk of maiming the kisser if there is any doubt regarding whether or not their love is true.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Aurelia's curse has been shown to provide the most utility from opening locked doors to melting gates. That doesn't stop her from hating it though.
  • The Bus Came Back: After her lengthy exile from the CPC, they eventually reach out to her and let her back into the club on the condition she never harasses Gwen again and that she works hard to regain their acceptance.
  • Everyone Has Standards: After Aurelia is exposed as the one trying to get Gwen kicked out of the club, she clarifies that while she didn't think that Gwen deserved to be in the club she never intended for Gwen to be physically harmed as she had no knowledge of Prez's curse or the fact that when Gwen went into the barn that she would be met with a giant spider.
  • The Exile: Gets herself kicked out of the Cursed Princess Club for trying to get rid of Gwen. She’s welcomed back later when her friends miss her and Prez admits that part of her decision was out of personal Shame of nearly killing Gwen in her spider form.
  • Freudian Excuse: She’s very bitter over her curse since she can’t kiss anyone so she thinks she can’t ever have romance.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: The REAL reason that she tried to get rid of Gwen is because she was jealous that she had a fiancé and considered her own issues worse than hers. She later admits she was being selfish.
  • I Gave My Word: After seeing Lilyth's outburst in the first page of her diary, she promises Prez and the club to never read the diary ever again. Ultimately subverted, however, as after a few sleepless nights and her curiosity literally damaging her health, she eventually gives in and reads the diary.
  • Jerkass: Aside from what she did to Gwen she is also rude to her parents and she is revealed to have read other girls diaries before reading Gwen’s moms.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: As awful as what she did to Gwen, she did have a point. The CPC is showing favoritism on her and neglecting their other members to the point that even Gwen herself became uncomfortable with their special treatment. This became especially true when their focus on Gwen's 'problem' (Fredrick) nearly costed them one of their own members, Aurelia's best friend, Renee.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Thus far, every time she's done a truly terrible thing she's suffered one for it:
    • She tries to trick Gwen into going inside the barn when she's forbidden in the hopes that this'll get her kicked out of the CPC for breaking the rules (not knowing that the barn is where Calpernia hides during her monthly were-spider transformations and that she's put Gwen in actual, mortal danger) - instead she gets herself kicked out for nearly harming Gwen and her attitude.
    • During her subsequent tantrum, she tries to win over the rest of her clubmates by screaming that Gwen doesn't deserve their sympathy because "she's not really cursed, she's just ugly'". This shocking, repulsive display of insensitivity (knowing that Gwen has such serious psychological issues surrounding her appearance and that the entire point of the club is to be a safe space) instead loses her whatever she might've had up to that point, so nobody stands up for there, not even her best friend.
    • Having promised not to read Lilyth's diary and eventually giving in to curiosity since it was giving her insomnia, she instead ends up learning that Lilyth's greatest fear in the whole world and her dying wish was to prevent her daughter from having to hear people calling her ugly. This hits her so hard she ends up crying herself hysterically to sleep.
    • During the invasion, she ends up in a compromising position with Prez's spider form and a broken leg, basically putting her in the situation she put Gwen through.
  • Meaningful Name: "Aurelia" comes from the Latin word for gold, "aurum", and she's the princess of the gold-themed Gilded Kingdom.
  • Mundane Utility: Twice already in the comic she's used her curse to get through locks (by giving a little lick to one of her bobby pins to activate the curse then jamming it inside so it melts the mechanism - although Syrah has plenty of fun implying that she'd rather make out with it).
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She tries to justify her trying to get Gwen kicked out of the CPC by declaring Gwen doesn’t belong here because she’s not cursed, "she’s just ugly". Then she reads Gwen’s mother’s diary, and finds out that her mother’s worst fear—that a child she had brought into the world would be seen as ugly and hated for it. Realizing that’s exactly what she did, she ends up crying herself to sleep.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: Her reasons for getting Gwen in trouble are that she believes Gwen is taking too much attention away from other princesses in the club, such as her best fried Renee, and Gwen is being shown too much favoritism from the older club members. Said background princesses, including Renee, quickly state they aren't bothered by the focus on Gwen and prefer not getting too much attention. Likewise, Abbi and Jolie later explain that Gwen's been getting so much attention because she's the newest member and they like to dote on the newbies.
  • Oppose What You Suffered: She passive aggressively calls King Jack out on his extreme over protectiveness towards his daughters (including Gwen) given her own over protective parents. Too bad Jack misinterpreted it…
  • Psychological Projection: When she tries to justify her sabotage of Gwen by complaining that Gwen is taking time and spotlight away from the lesser known members of the CPC, it's painfully obvious that she really means from her, specifically. The princesses she claims to have done this for even immediately state that they never had an issue with Gwen getting so much attention and prefer staying in the background.
    • Later when Gwen goes to see her (to return her necklace) Aurelia initially thinks she’s there to float over having “won” as if their distain was mutual.
      • In her next appearance, when she gets a letter from the CPC she initially thinks it’s hate mail.
  • The Resenter: She’s pretty bitter about her curse and refuses to forgive her stepfather until she finds a cure. She also hates how a princess like Gwen, who isn't cursed and has a loving family that supports her, is allowed into the club for "just being ugly" and the rest who are suffering from legitimate curses have showered her with love and attention. She softens up after returning, both in terms of Gwen and her stepfather.
  • Secretly Selfish: She claimed that her reasons for wanting Gwen kicked out of the club were because she was taking attention away from the other members (including her best friend) and that she shouldn’t even be there since she’s not actually cursed. However, she was leaving notes for Gwen from the moment she met her, before those excuses became apparent. So it was likely more to do with the fact that she resented that Gwen has “everything”, a loving family, and a fiancé (she’s bitter over not being able to kiss anyone) even if he doesn’t want her, while not being cursed. Thankfully, when she returns to the club she is able to admit that her motives were selfish and she works on being better. Then, when she thinks she has a chance to reverse her curse she selflessly suggests that another member take it instead.
  • Tears of Remorse: Aurelia sheds these when she reads that Gwen’s mother said she would hate herself forever if she had a child who faced discrimination for being "ugly", which is exactly what happened to Gwen when Aurelia tried to get her kicked out of the CPC because "she’s not cursed, she’s just ugly!".
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Spending some time banished from the club and reflecting on her actions (also Gwen giving her back her favorite necklace even after everything) causes her to acknowledge her actions against Gwen were selfish and awful. She's genuinely remorseful for what she did to Gwen and spends most of the 3rd season really doing her best to make up for it, her friends and the club.
  • Walking Spoiler: Really hard to talk about her without bringing up the fact she was the person secretly trying to force Gwen out of the club.

    Jolie

Princess Jolie of the Lace Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princessjolie.png

Princess of the Lace Kingdom cursed to have her eyes turned into pocket dimensions.

  • Bag of Holding: She stores things in her eye holes. There doesn't seem to be any space limitations other than what she can fit through the sockets.
  • Blindfolded Vision: Despite lacking eyes, she seemingly has no trouble seeing anything, even when wearing a face mask that makes it look like she still has her eyes. This lampshaded by Saffron who questions how it's possible for her see without her eyes, to which Jolie admits she has no idea and that one would have to ask the dealer who took her eyes in the first place to understand it.
  • Curse: Jolie's eyes have been cursed to become portals to a pocket dimension where she can store things like bobby pins, pencils, and something that bites.
  • Deal with the Devil: The source of her curse. Not long after Jolie's birth, a massive fire destroyed most of the Lace Kingdom and her parents depleted the kingdom's treasury trying to fix it. When the king and queen were desperate a mysterious man showed up with an offer: he would restore the kingdom and in return he would have his pick of the kingdom's finest items. Her father accepts the deal and six months later the dealer comes to collect...
  • Eye Scream: Frequently sticks her fingers and objects into the empty sockets where her eyeballs should be which often freaks out the people around her. In a bonus short, she also relates to other princesses how her eyes were plucked out from her face by the devil at only seven years of age, while she was awake and conscious.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: She is very beautiful (despite not having any eyes), graceful, elegant, and dating Princess Nell. In fact, her relationship is the main reason why she remains in the CPC, since, unlike most other members (including her lover), she has never been marginalized or alienated due to her curse and has already learned to cope with it.
  • Nice Girl: One of the kindest members of the Club. When it's her turn to teach Gwen about beauty she takes the Club to a hospital to volunteer to read to children because she thinks there's nothing sexier than being charitable. She's even one of the few club members shown to stay awake during the Prez's lectures.
  • Odd Couple: With Nell.
  • Wacky Marriage Proposal: When Jolie finds out that Nell has approached the King and Queen of the Lace Kingdom to ask for Jolie's hand in marriage, she completely flips the tables on Nell by proposing herself. Jolie pulls an engagement ring out of her eyesocket pocket dimension, which is attached to a banner that reads "Marry me, Nell!" by a golden string. The two are happily engaged there and then, of course.

    Monika

Princess Monika of the Quilt Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princessmonika.png

Princess of the Quilt Kingdom cursed to turn into a crow when she gets nervous.

  • Curse: Monika was kidnapped by an evil wizard and turned into his pet crow. Although the wizard was eventually defeated, and Monika's curse partially lifted she still transforms into a crow whenever she gets nervous.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: Has a habit of crashing into things whilst flying and once accidentally slipped off a cliff when she was startled.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Was kidnapped as a child by an evil wizard, forcibly transformed into a bird, and held captive in a cage as his pet for an undisclosed amount of time. The trauma of this incident can is what caused Monika's current problems with hoarding and anxiety.
  • Human Pet: Spent a good portion of her childhood kidnapped by an evil wizard and transformed into his pet crow.
  • Instant Messenger Pigeon: Acts as one between Gwen and the Cursed Princess Club, being disguised as a crow.
  • Involuntary Shapeshifting: Whenever she gets nervous she transforms into a crow.
  • Kleptomaniac Hero: She appears to have developed an uncontrollable desire to steal and hoard pretty things as a side effect of having been turned into a crow during her childhood. While this is mostly played for laughs, later episodes suggest her kleptomania and hoarding may be less due to a magical compulsion and more symptomatic of her much more serious psychological issues. She even tearfully admits (like many pathological hoarders) that the reason she does it is primarily because being surrounded by stuff makes her feel secure.
  • Magic Pants: Appears to be the rule for curse-based transformations in the setting. Her dress and tiara disappear with a "poof" when she transforms into a crow and appear right back on her when she turns back into a human.
  • Nervous Wreck: Monika gets nervous about pretty much everything and when she gets nervous she transforms into a bird. She even gets flustered trying to order fast food.
  • Rejected Apology: Even after Frederick explains to her that pushing her off the cliff was an accident (and he also thought she was Gwen and he wanted to talk to her) Monika doesn’t believe him and still sees him as the “bad man that pushed (her)”. She seems to let go of this later.
  • Ship Tease: Sparks fly between her and the glasses Princel when they both express a mutual love for Turtles of the Round Table.
  • Shrinking Violet: She is very timid and easily frightened.
  • Thieving Magpie: Her time spent as a crow has left her with this tendency, giving her a compulsion to steal "shiny" things.
  • Womanchild: Deconstructed. Despite being at least 18 years old (she's seen getting drunk with Calpernia, Syrah and the rest of the older CPC members), Monika behaves in many ways even younger than Gwen: she can't talk to strangers without getting a panic attack, can't clean or cook for herself, won't tidy her room up, is obsessed with stuffed animals and cartoons, wants to get a pet despite having never even considered that it's a responsibility, and needs to be repeatedly told to stop taking other people's things. Rather than being due to Monika being stupid, selfish or weird, though, it's shown to be a natural, serious consequence of her having suffered a severe childhood trauma and spending the rest of her life coddled and protected by everyone around her because of it, meaning she was never able to gain any life skills or emotionally mature. Monika is aware that her behavior isn't normal and wishes she could act more like an adult, but struggles with her self-esteem and anxiety issues. As is the running theme for many of the characters in the comic, her psychological problems are shown to be much more serious than her magical curse.

    Nell

Princess Nell of the Stripe Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princessnell.png

Princess of the Stripe Kingdom cursed to have prophetic visions of doom.

  • Abusive Parents: Even with all the questionable parenting that many of the characters have endured, Nell's parents undeniably take the prize as "Worst Parents" since they kept her locked in a cage she couldn't even stand up in and exploited her curse for their own gain.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Takes a disliking to Gwen because she's friends with Jolie.
  • Creepy Loner Girl: Even her own girlfriend describes her as always "doing her own thing" and she is rarely seen getting involved in club activities.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She was cursed to see misfortune and disaster. After seeing that she was useless to them as a princess but useful as a tool to avoid catastrophes, her family locked her in a cage and abused her ability for profit.
  • Damsel in Distress: She met the Prez when she saved her from her imprisonment in her family's kingdom.
  • Death Glare: Has an absolutely vicious one that she directs at Gwen whenever she gets too close to Jolie.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Her visions of misfortune seem to resemble seizures. The others say that the best they can do for her is lie her down on her side so she doesn't hurt herself.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite her disdain for her, she rushes to warn Curtis when she sees Gwen approaching the barn, allowing him to save her from Prez in her werespider form.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: Is dating Princess Jolie.
  • No Social Skills: Nell barely talks, glares at people, likes staring at people from hiding, hisses like an animal when they try to touch her, and has a very difficult time articulating what should be fairly basic concepts about interpersonal interactions, like that she's uncomfortable with other girls touching her girlfriend. This is mostly played for laughs, but is actually a common characteristic of children who suffered massive childhood abuse or were raised in captivity with no human contact, like Nell was.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Averted. Her irises are blood red and tend to glow in the dark, however, whilst Nell may be hard to approach she's actually a good person.
  • Red Herring: She seems to be the only princess with a problem with Gwendolyn, so it looks like she is the person trying to trick Gwen into getting banished from the club. But Nell is actually completely innocent.

    Renee

Princess Renee of the Velvet Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princessrenee.png

Princess of the Velvet Kingdom cursed to have frogs leap out of her mouth whenever she speaks.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: She's a sweet, kind Princess Classic most of the time. But when Aurelia's Bitch in Sheep's Clothing-side is revealed, Renee is arguably the most livid. And when Aurelia attempts to get Renee to sympathize with her, Renee answers by spitting a frog in her face.
  • Curse: Both she and her sister were cursed by a banshee who overheard them gossiping about her. Renee's sister has gold coins fall out of her mouth whenever she talks, whereas poor Renee instead has live frogs leap out.
  • Friend to All Living Things: She is often surrounded by a small flock of swans. However they don't surround her because she's beautiful and elegant, instead they just enjoy eating the frogs that fall out of her mouth.
  • Mouth Stitched Shut: The only remedy that doctors could think of for her curse was stitching a zipper over her mouth to limit the amount she could speak.
  • Near-Death Experience: She nearly gets struck by lightning while feeding her swans at the pond. If not for Whitney's timely appearance, Nell's prophecy about her death would have come true.
  • Spiteful Spit: Once Aurelia reveals she wanted to have Gwendolyn thrown out of the Club and the other members turn on her, she tries to appeal to Renee for understanding. Renee's answer is to open her zipper and spit a frog into Aurelia's face while giving her a Death Glare.
  • The Unfavorite: Her sister's curse is a constant source of income, providing her family with a fortune in gold coins, whilst Renee's curse is only good for increasing the population of amphibians. Aurelia says that the sister is invited to every party whilst Renee has been hidden away by her family.

    Saffron

Prince Saffron of the Foliage Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princesaffron.png

Prince of the Foliage Kingdom with a cursed hand.

  • Back-to-Back Badasses: Pulls this with the Prez against the Bandits they encounter outside the Princels' clubhouse.
  • Berserk Button: He's very sensitive about the fact he can't grow a beard and threatens to murder the Princels when they mock him for it.
  • Conspicuous Gloves: Wears a thick leather glove over his left hand and forearm to conceal his Evil Hand.
  • Curse: His hand was cursed by a goblin to be "evil" and out of his control.
  • Defrosting Ice King: Not Saffron; he's rather welcoming from the start. Rather his own hand is this towards him, with it slowly going from a nuisance to helping Saffron out by catching objects he didn't see coming, punching bandits attempting to ambush him, and generally being more useful.
  • Evil Hand: His hand was cursed to be "evil". In reality, its more annoying than anything else, embarrassing him by making rude gestures and sabotaging his efforts to play ping pong.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Tells Gwen in "Episode 40" that the reason he complains so much about everything is because he refuses to bottle up his feelings in an unhealthy way and become a Stepford Smiler like so many of the princesses in the club.
Saffron: "So why don't you stop being a polite little princess for a second, and just tell us what's wrong so we can help already?"
    • Saffron is also incredibly skilled at gardening and flower arranging because he is from the Foliage Kingdom.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Assumes that Gwendolyn's curse was the she was an old mop that got brought to life and feels terrible about making assumptions when he learns she was just born with her appearance.
  • Nature Lover: He comes from the Foliage Kingdom so his affinity with plants is only natural. He's even won a few awards for his decorative pruning talents.
  • Number Two: To the Prez. She trusts him to temporarily take charge of the CPC in an emergency situation or if she needs to leave for a period of time and always includes him in her inner circle when making plans.
  • Meaningful Rename: He hates the name of the club not including princes and wishes the President would change it. Unfortunately, Prez is unwilling to rebrand because she already printed a lot of T-shirts with the CPC name.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Says it verbatim when his Evil Hand causes him to knock a ping pong ball into Jolie's eye socket. Although, this is less because of doing it in the first place and more because he knows he's the one that's going to have to fish it out.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: A Rare Male Example of the trope — Prince Saffron's default outfit includes a sleeveless tunic/ vest held closed by a sash tied around his waist. (The top is alternately drawn with and without buttons, but either way Prince Saffron wears the shirt like an incredibly deep v-neck that goes down to his navel.)
  • Perma-Stubble: Can't grow a beard like all the other men in his royal lineage so is stuck with this. He considers it his second curse.
  • The One Guy: Whilst there are apparently a small handful of male members of the Cursed Princess Club, Saffron is the only one seen.
  • The Starscream: A rare heroic example. He is very upfront about his issues with the Cursed Princess Club (mainly the name) and doesn't try to hide the fact that he intends to take over whenever the possibility arises so he can enact some changes. His methods of trying to take the club are always quite amicable too, such as making public challenges for the role of president over a game of ping pong.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: He is terrified of spiders to the point that when he's asked to kill one he vanishes for two whole episodes and returns wearing a hazmat suit and carrying a torch.

    Syrah

Princess Syrah of the Metallic Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princesssyrah.png

Princess of the Metallic Kingdom cursed to have her nose grow longer when she tells a lie.

  • Ambiguously Bi: Despite only ever showing an interest in men, she assures Abbi that the Prez is everyone's "backup crush" and casually refers to the Cursed Princess Club as the Prez's own personal harem.
  • Bad Liar: Her curse naturally leaves her unable to convincingly lie anymore. When put into a position where she can't tell the truth, she has to either mumble incoherently or deflect the question.
  • Cool Big Sis: Not a biological sister to anyone but essentially serves this purpose for the younger members of the CPC like Gwen and Abbi.
  • Curse: Cursed by an ex-boyfriend who suspected her of cheating (which she was). He gave her chocolates dosed with a "Pinocchio's Nose" curse, causing her nose to grow whenever she lies. Although, it resets back to normal the next morning.
  • Gag Nose: Her nose, when she's lying, becomes extremely pointy. In fact, it's so pointy that it even drilled an olive.
  • Good Bad Girl: Loves to drink, loves to date, is open about not being a virgin, and doesn't feel bad about cheating on boyfriends or hitting on older guys. She's still a loyal friend and gives Gwen honest advice about handling confrontations. The fact that she said she'd date any of the Princels and her nose didn't grow also indicates she's not (that) shallow.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: Starts drinking from the moment she wakes up and likes to party with her gentlemen suitors.
  • The Hedonist: Enjoys going out with boys (often multiple at once) and is willing to start drinking at 7am. It's noted that this trait of hers almost kept her from Joining the Club due the President's concern for the club's male members.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: She got her curse from a boyfriend who suspected her of cheating on him. Turns out, he was right, making her curse well deserved.
  • Likes Older Men: She unapologetically thirsts after the Pastel King, much to the displeasure of everyone.
  • Pet the Dog: She tells the Princels (truthfully) that she would be willing to date either of them. She is also one of the first to immediately forgive Frederick after seeing that he’s changed since she acknowledges that everyone makes mistakes and says things that they regret.
  • Really Gets Around: Her curse hasn't done anything to stymie her social life, though she does try to keep her nose small for dates. When Aurelia refers to everyone in the club as "A bunch of reject, virgin princesses," Syrah bluntly replies "Speak for yourself, sister." When she's required to tell the biggest lie she can think of to make her nose grow, she claims to be a virgin, causing her nose to grow large enough for her to use it as a weapon.

    Thermidora

Princess Thermidora

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princessthermodia.png
A lobster princess cursed to be trapped in a human body with giant lobster claws.
  • Big Beautiful Woman: Downplayed. Thermidora isn't exactly big, but she has a slightly rounder face and a thicker body compared to the other princesses. She even refers to her body as "voluptuous." Of course she certainly doesn't think her human form is beautiful.
  • Call a Human a "Meatbag": Currently, her closest friends are all humans, but she personally finds human forms unappealing and would prefer to be a crustacean again.
Thermidora: "Why am I still in this repulsive, voluptuous human flesh?"
  • Cumbersome Claws: Princess Thermidora is a lobster who was cursed into a human form, but her lobster pincers stayed the same and became an occasional hindrance. For instance, she once split a Puss-in-Boots hand puppet in half when she tried shoving a claw into it. Another time, she stuffed her claws into her pockets to hide them from someone who didn't know the true nature of the Cursed Princess Club, but when she tripped she shot her arms out to break her fall and ripped the sides of her dress open.
  • Curse: A magical sea cucumber cursed her into a human form (only leaving her "immaculate pincers" unchanged) in order to steal her beloved Baron Benedict (also a lobster).
  • Power Pincers: She's awfully proud of them and seemingly oblivious that they're a danger to everyone around her.

    Background Princesses

Princess Bernadette, Princess Deianeira, Princess Sally

A trio of minor princesses often seen in the background of the club or with Renee. Princess Bernadette is cursed with a tail, Deianeira's cursed to make all men uncomfortable when she talks, and Sally's cursed to always feel like there's a pebble in her shoe.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When Gwen asks what Bernadette's curse is, she simply states she has a tail. Her mild response downplays that said tail looks like it belongs on Godzilla.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Bernadette and Deianeira are two of the mildest members in the club, and prove to be utterly vicious as they whoop the asses of the Plaid Army. This might apply to Sally too, if her curse was something she could use for offense.
  • Bit Character: They mainly exist to fill out the background. When Aurelia states none of them have gotten attention since Gwen joined, they immediately state they're fine with that as they prefer the lack of attention.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Bernadette casually mentions having a tail, and Deianeira says her voice makes men uncomfortable. Which prove to be very useful assets when staving off the Plaid Army's invasion of the Pastel Kingdom.
  • A Day in the Limelight: All three of them finally step into the spotlight in Chapter 150, when they join in driving away as much of the Plaid Army as they can. Bernadette uses her massive tail on the offensive, while Deianeira torments all the male soldiers with her voice. Sally... helps with the smoke effects and offers moral support.
  • Meaningful Name: Deianeira's name in Greek can be translated to "Destroyer of men." Given her curse makes her voice sound agonizing to any man who hears it, it's very fitting.

The Argyle Kingdom

    Griffin

Prince Griffin of the Argyle Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princegriffin.png

Prince of the Argyle Kingdom and Blaine's nemesis.

  • The Ace: He's so good at the piano he was able to beat Blaine in the finals of a Inter-Kingdom Competition.
  • Color Motif: Orange.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: He is this to Blaine, having been perhaps the only person in existence to best him at anything.
  • Unsportsmanlike Gloating: Enjoys rubbing his victory at the Inter-Kingdom Piano Showcase in Blaine's face

    Leopold

Lord Leopold of the Argyle Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/leopold_0.png

Lord of the Argyle Kingdom, cousin of Prince Griffin and a suitor to Gwendolyn.

  • The Ace: Leopold is a prodigious artist as shown by his able to create numerous drawings at once even when distracted, make art out of food, and is the only person to ever draw Gwen properly.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Was previously attracted to Gwen before developing feelings for her twin brother Jamie.
  • Beauty Is Bad: Can't stand the stereotypical opinion on what is "beautiful", finding individuals like Jamie detestable and seeing Gwendolyn as enticing. That said, he's not a contrarian as he legitimately recognizes the beauty Gwen has rather than simply liking her because he thinks she's "ugly." The portrait he creates of her is the first one shown to properly capture her cuteness, compared to all the unflattering ones shown before making her look like a monster.
  • Color Motif: Yellow.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He has a very quick wit which he is unafraid to use to cut people down, especially Frederick.
Leopold: "I'm not so much of a scoundrel as to steal a woman away whilst she's on a date... Regardless of the quality."
  • Eccentric Artist: Averted. Despite being a gifted artist that loves all things that goes against conventional beauty standards, he's one of the most down-to-earth characters in the whole series.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Whether it's romantic or not - he clearly has a fascination with Gwen - but ultimately backs off when he realizes she needs to learn to love herself before she can love anyone else.
  • Nice Guy: Despite his Deadpan Snarker tendencies and initial abrasiveness towards anything that didn't fit his idea of beauty, he's quickly revealed to be a caring guy that will immediately admit his faults and help out those who need it.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: He loves all things that go against society's stereotypical idea of beauty, which is why he finds himself drawn to Gwendolyn because he sees her as unconventionally beautiful.
  • Odd Friendship: Despite Jamie being the epitome of everything he despises, the two end up becoming friends, even if Jamie still haunts Leopold's nightmares.

The Monochrome Kingdom

    In General

In General

The royal family of a prosperous kingdom, the Monochrome family is ruled by their ruthless personal code of conduct. From a young age, the royals are encouraged to compete, dominate, and take what they want, even if it means crushing their own family members on the way to the top (especially if it means taking out their siblings as competition).

  • Abusive Parents: Family life for the princes and princess was a literal cutthroat contest for the affection of their parents. The children were taught to "defeat anyone who stands in their way" and to "take what they want, especially from each other." That upbringing led Prince Whitney to become an entitled, emotionally stunted tyrant who didn't care if he had to ruin other people's lives to achieve his goals, and led Prince Greyden to attempt to curse, kill, and skin his own brother for a shot at the crown. As Whitney recounts in Episode 69:
Prince Whitney: The endless competitions and comparisons... The violent, gladiator-style fights to win Father's affection each week...
    Prince Frederick: ...Th- the what...?
Prince Whitney: The contests to see which son could most effectively torture political prisoners...
    Prince Frederick: ...Oh... oh god...
Prince Whitney: Oh! Did you have to recite those daily Machiavellian chants too?
  • Colorful Theme Naming: The three royal children all have names that correspond to desaturated "colors" or tints: Whitney is "white", Greyden is "grey", and Blacquelyn is "black."
  • Inheritance Murder: The natural outcome of their upbringing — Greyden attempted to curse and kill Whitney in order to take him out of the running for the throne, and is implied to have killed their parents to hasten his own coronation.

     Whitney

(Ex-)Prince Whitney of the Monochrome Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/prince_douchebag_2.PNG
Click here to see him as a Prince

The (former) prince of the Monochrome Kingdom and Prez' ex-fiancé. Prez believes she ate him after transforming into a were-spider for the first time. In reality, he survived, but was put under a curse by his own family and exiled.

  • Abusive Parents: Him and his siblings were pushed by their parents to always do whatever it would take to come out on top. His father would make them fight extremely violent gladiatorial battles for his affection each week, compete on who could torture political prisoners the best and recite Machiavellian chants.
  • Animals Hate Him: As a consequence of his curse, no animal wants to even get close to him. Even Laverne, who Frederick says "loves every guy she meets" is scared to death the whole time she and Frederick are staying at his camp (although she does warm up to him eventually).
  • Animal Motif: White tigers.
  • Arranged Marriage: He had one with Princess Calpernia. It was called off after she received the were-spider curse by accident and almost killed him.
  • The Atoner: Falling victim to his family's own cut-throat methods and being taken care of by a group of kind people afterwards was a wake-up call to him. He now roams the kingdoms in order to apologize and make amends to everyone he's wronged in the past.
  • Curse: He was given a cursed potion by his younger brother that made tiger stripes appear on his face and gave him an aura that frightened every animal he came close to. He also became able to sense fear and nervousness in other living beings. The CPC also conclude that it must've affected his brain somewhat since he picked up a lot of cat-like mannerisms such as preferring to sleep outside and thinking dead animals are an appropriate gift.
  • Entitled to Have You: Back when they were still in an Arranged Marriage, he was furious when he found out Prez was in love with a male nurse. It hurt his ego that a lowly peasant would take what he believed was by birthright his and so he concocted a plan to murder Asa. It went horribly wrong and he ended up almost getting eaten when Prez got injected with the were-spider potion instead of Asa and transformed for the first time.
  • The Evil Prince: Before his epiphany he was a merciless tyrant-in-the-making who didn't hesitate to use blackmail and murder to get what he believed he was entitled to. He became a lot more amicable after being cursed and now seeks redemption for his crimes.
  • The Exile: After his curse manifested, his family stripped him of his title, riches and old privileges and forced him to leave the Monochrome Kingdom for good.
  • Freudian Excuse: He was, as Prez' father put it, a real butt-nugget when he was still a prince and basically ruined Prez' love-life out of sheer entitlement. His toxic behavior back then is revealed to be the result of a family who drilled it into their children's heads that Second Place Is for Losers, often through very violent methods.
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: While the CPC eventually accepts him into their ranks, a lot of them still tread on eggshells around him. Prez especially isn't really thrilled that he's there now, but reluctantly resolves to give him a chance. Curtis makes it very clear to him that he's watching him and will be on him the second he suspects Whitney is planning something bad for Calpernia.
  • Furry Reminder: His curse — despite not taking full effect — seems to have left him with some unusual personality quirks such as preferring to sleep outside on the grass or thinking dead animals are an appropriate gift like a cat would.
  • Girl on Girl Is Hot: When Prez tells him that she's in love with her nurse, he blushes and briefly calms down. He then says that they could make that work, but goes right back to being jealous and angry when she clarifies that her nurse is male.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He underwent one when some very kind people took him in after he was cursed.
  • In the Hood: In the present he wears a simple traveling cloak with the hood pulled up to hide his face.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: He tried to kill a man by forcefully injecting him with a potion that would subject him to a Forced Transformation. In the end, his own downfall resulted from him being poisoned with just such a potion himself and becoming a dishonored exile.
  • Licked by the Dog: After he reveals himself to the Cursed Princess Club, Laverne suddenly comes out of the woods and nuzzles up to him. Downplayed, as this sudden display of affection doesn't convince anyone there of his innocence (except for Frederick, who only knew him as the kind stranger who helped him on the road).
  • Mark of Shame: The black tiger stripes on his face that represent his curse.
  • Near-Death Experience: Prez didn't eat him that fateful night like she believes, but it was a very close call.
  • Not Quite Dead: Prez believes she ate him alive, since when she woke up from her transformation he was nowhere to be seen and she heaved out parts of his tie and his earrings shortly after. Turns out, no, he managed to get away in time.
  • Skewed Priorities: He nearly got himself eaten alive by Calpernia because he refused to leave the room without his crown.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: He's come a long way from the evil overly entitled jerk he used to be. In the present he is helpful, forthcoming and kind to just about everybody he meets. The tent he carries isn't even for him, it's in case he meets travelers who don't have one.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Asa saved him from being eaten by Prez. Instead of showing gratitude, Whitney got furious about being rescued by someone he viewed as his lesser and attempted to use Asa as a meat shield to get away.
  • Walking Spoiler: Him being alive is a huge plot-twist in the story.
  • Walking the Earth: After being shown kindness despite his curse, he committed himself to traveling the kingdoms on foot in order to find and apologize to all the people he hurt.

     Greyden

Prince Greyden of the Monochrome Kingdom / King Greyden of the Monochrome Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/greyden.PNG
Younger brother of Whitney and current heir to the throne of the Monochrome Kingdom.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: When Whitney returned from the Polygon Kingdom, he pretended he was worried and claimed Whitney's presumed death made him realize he loved his brother more than the crown they were competing for. In reality he was furious Whitney had survived and immediately made a plan to assassinate him to become heir to the throne.
  • Cain and Abel: His original plan was to give Whitney a potion that would turn him into a white tiger, then have the guards kill him and wear his fur as a cloak at his coronation. It failed, due to Whitney spitting the potion out at the last second.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: When his butler suggests turning Whitney into something more harmless to kill and skin, for example a dalmatian, he reacts with disgust and questions what kind of person would be sick enough to wear a dalmatian.
  • The Evil Prince: Plays this a lot straighter than his brother. While Whitney in the past was willing to murder his rival, his depravity never went so far as to plan to wear a piece of said rival's body as clothing.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Is turned into a dog by his younger sister, just like how he tried to curse his older brother.
  • Princeling Rivalry: Plots to curse and then kill his older brother to become next in line to the throne.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Implied. After "killing" his older brother, his next in-comic appearance is as the newly crowned King of the Monochrome Kingdom, with both his parents having suffered from a sudden, mysterious accident.

     Blacquelyn

Princess Blacquelyn of the Monochrome Kingdom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blacquelyn.png

Whitney and Greyden's sister, not much is known about Blacquelyn. She is presumed to have undergone the same brutal conditioning as her brothers.

  • Creepy Doll: Although Blacquelyn seems to be a teenager or young adult, her introduction at the Bippity Bop shows her nervously cradling a doll that looks just like her brother, Greyden. She goes from cradling it to throttling it when she knows her brother isn't looking.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Her first in-comic appearance is as part of a ripped-up photograph in Whitney's flashback to his childhood in Episode 87. She isn't formally introduced until Episode 124, accompanying her brother Greyden at the Bippity Bop.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Though all the Monochrome royals have pale skin and desaturated hair, the princess's jet-black hair and nervous, slightly deranged look lands her squarely in this territory.
  • Laughing Mad: Blacquelyn laughs a little too loudly at her brother's jokes, all while wringing the neck of a doll that looks just like him. The art style gives her a deranged speech bubble, bulging red eyes, and a forced grimace, indicating she's under a considerable amount of stress or some degree of emotional instability.
  • Pet the Dog: While she turns her brother Greyden into a dog to take his place as ruler, she DOESN'T kill him and keeps him in her coat. She also invited Whitney to her coronation, though the fact that he hasn’t tried to get the throne back might be the reason for this.
  • Princeling Rivalry: While helping an inebriated Greyden home from the Bippity Bop, Blacquelyn drops several comments that make it sound like she's plotting to do unto Greyden what he tried to do to Whitney — though she doesn't seem to have any qualms about turning him into a dalmatian.

Others

    The Witch

The Witch

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_witch.png
A strange witch that often appears to try to curse Jamie with her candied apples.
  • Affably Evil: Despite always often appearing to curse Jamie, the Witch is actually quite fine with conversing with other people, particularly Jamie, even offering him advice on reconsidering his feelings.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: When she mistakenly believes that Gwen is another witch, she immediately backs down and leaves as to her "it's wrong to steal prey from another witch".
  • Forced Sleep: Her candied apples inflicts this effect on who ever eats them.
  • Not Me This Time: When she is captured after Jamie collapsed after tasting the community art piece, she very loudly protests that it's not her doing (this time), and that she's only in the exhibit to enjoy the arts in peace.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Despite only briefly appearing on one scene at the Gala, the candied apple she gave to Jamie ends up putting Gwen on a coma and setting up a main conflict of the second half of season 4.

    The Princels

The Princels

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princels.png

An organization of princes who have ostracized themselves from society due to their physical appearance and their inability to find a romantic partner. They currently hide out in their clubhouse within the Monochrome Kingdom.

  • Entitled to Have You:
    • Believe the princesses of the Cursed Princess Club are putting on a "lame sympathy act" because they still have plenty of princes that want them but just aren't handsome or charming enough for them. Essentially, princes like them.
    • They announce that because Gwen was nice to all them, she should marry one of them and stay with them. When she reveals that she's already engaged they immediately turn on her and accuse her of toying with their hearts.
  • I Am Not Pretty: They all think they're unattractive and that's why women don't like them. They're actually not that bad looking, but their personalities are certainly VERY unattractive.
  • I Owe You My Life: The only reason they're willing to speak to Prez is because she saved their lives once.
  • Jerkass: Their personalities are far more repulsive than their appearances will ever be:
    • Whilst their decision to hide from the world due to their negative self-images might be sympathetic, they accuse the Cursed Princess Club of being a pity party for princess who could still "bag a hundred guys wanting to marry them" and completely disregard any pain or psychological issues that any of the CPC might have.
    • When Syrah – a girl with a nose that grows when she lies – tell them that they're not that bad looking and she'd date any of them, their response is to tell her they wouldn't want a girl who'd date just any loser.
Saffron: "You know what, guys? You're not single because of your looks or whatever. It's because you're jerks!!"
    • They initially refuse to eat any of Gwen's cooking because they "don't eat food cooked by house-elves."
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Underneath their sour exteriors and aggressive personalities, they can be very nice when they don't focus on their appearance such as when Orson genuinely helps Monica with her anxiety or when Celso saves and carries an injured Aurelia without complaning.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: They all see giant elephant ears, a potato with glasses, or literal trash respectively when they look in a mirror but everyone else views them as normal. Whilst this is – as the Prez assumes – likely just their own insecurities influencing their reflection on the world, it sounds exactly like Gwen's own case. And in Gwen's case there is more and more evidence that she might actually be cursed.
  • No Name Given: Played Straight for the longest time, but after 100+ episodes the blue Princel was revealed to be named Orson. The orange Princel was named in episode 161 as Celso. Only the brown Princel remains unnamed.
  • Prince Charmless: They're royalty but lack the stereotypical handsomeness or charm and are very shallow and self-obsessed individuals.
  • Punny Name: The name of their club, "the Princels", is a combination of the words "Prince" and "incel," referring to their royal status and their lonely lifestyle. "Incel" itself is a portmanteau of "involuntary celibate," slang defined as "a member of an online community of young men who consider themselves unable to attract women," and "typically associated with views that are hostile toward women and men who are sexually active."
  • Unknown Rival: To Prince Blaine. They hate him for being the Prince Charming.
  • Wangst: Spend all their time complaining about their appearances and inability to get girlfriends, whilst wallowing in self-pity and doing nothing to improve themselves like the CPC.

    Prince Blaine Fan Club

Prince Blaine Fan Club

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princeblainefans.png

A group of fangirls crazy about Prince Blaine who sell his merchandise.

  • Dwindling Party: The majority of them leave to form a new fan club when they see Jamie.
  • Entitled to Have You: Zig-Zagged. They don't feel worthy of having him to themselves as individuals but as a collective. They believe Blaine has remained single his entire life because he cherishes the happiness of his fans the most, so they view any girl with the gall to try and hoard him to herself deserving of their wrath.
  • Harmless Villain: They despise Maria and attempt a campaign of harassment against her during a royal event. Due to a combination of incompetence and Maria having Plot Armor due to being a princess, they not only fail utterly, but Maria never even registers that they don't like her.
    • Not-So-Harmless Villain: The Club President becomes this in Episode 132, revealing that Frederick initially thought Gwen was ugly in a ploy that ruins the relationships of all the Pastel Princesses, just so she can break up Blaine and Maria. However, the Plaid Queen was the one pulling the strings in an attempt to stop her husband's plans.
  • Loony Fan: All of them are obsessed with Blaine and sell merchandise of him.
  • The Nameless: None of them are named. The Club President tries to say her name in Episode 145, but Blaine makes it clear he doesn't care and never will.
  • Relationship Sabotage: Try to do this to Blaine and Maria's relationship.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: The fan club dwindles because a good number of them left to start a new fan club… for Prince Jamie.
  • Yoko Oh No: They hate Princess Maria for "taking" Prince Blaine from them. However, when she reveals to be a bigger Loony Fan than any of them could ever hope to be, a few of them decide that she's okay in their book.

    Suzanna

Suzanna Winchester

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/suzannawinchester.png

The sole daughter of a legendary family of fencing champions who has only elevated their legacy. She is in love with Prince Lance of the Plaid Kingdom.

  • The Ace: She is the greatest fencer of her generation, defeated all male and female fencers that challenge her and being despised or pursued by them all because of it.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Is called "Suzie" by Lorena.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: She often expressed a desire for a Worthy Opponent who could actually give her a challenging fight, however, Suzanna realises that when she nearly loses to Lorena she isn't satisfied but instead livid that a complete rookie and her rival for Lance's affections nearly bested her and so refuses to ever give her rematch.
  • Best Her to Bed Her: Downplayed. Despite having multiple male suitors, she rejects them all as she thinks they should be ashamed to grovel for a date with her when they can't even beat her in a fight. It's less about her being bested and more about her wanting someone who can stand on equal footing with her.
  • Break the Haughty: Averted. A rejected suitor attempted to do this to her by attacking her with a knife to show her how small and useless she was outside of the world of fencing, fortunately Lance was there to save the day. The event did nothing to quench her resolve to be the best and she seems to have overcome any trauma the event may have caused.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Suzanna is an unrivaled fencer and she can best anyone at the sport, so long as they play by the rules. In a real fight (or against someone who never learnt the rules in the first place like Lorena) she's pretty helpless.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: When Suzanna challenges Lorena to a fencing match, Lorena takes her down with a single swift blow to the face... with her fist. Once the actual rules of fencing are explained to Lorena, Suzanna has much more success against her... until Lorena's Awesomeness by Analysis allows her to convert boxing moves into fencing moves and nearly deliver Suzanna her first loss.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Though she's still mostly hostile to Lorena, she has slowly shown to care for her such as when Lorena asked her to teach her more about military during their private fencing session. She also seemed genuinely concerned for Lorena when she broke off her engagement to Lance at the Costume Gala and eventually decides to move to the Pastel Kingdom to help train its military.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Refuses to take "pity points" for Lorena violating the rules of their fencing match and demands to win on her own merits alone.
  • Everyone Has Standards: She's part of the army Leland assembles to invade Pastel, but it's shown she's very uncomfortable with it and is questions their orders and the motivations behind them.
  • Friendship Denial: No matter how many times Lorena claims that they're friends, Suzanna will absolutely deny it.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Played With. Since she joined the Plaid Kingdom Military in a bid to win over Lance she ends on the front line of the invasion of the Pastel Kingdom. She doesn't fully understand what is going on, but once she pieces it all together she stops Just Following Orders and begins fighting for the Pastel Princesses instead.
  • I Love You Because I Can't Control You: Spent her life surrounded by girls who wanted to be her and guys who wanted her. She immediately fell in love with Lance because he had no clue who she was, why she was supposedly so important, and showed no interest in her beyond being Just Friends.
  • Master Swordsman: A fencing champion with over a decade of victories.
  • Loving a Shadow: Eventually realizes that Lance isn't the person she thought he was and falls out of love with him.
  • Rescue Romance: She fell in love with Lance after her saved her from a knife-wielding rejected suitor, Lance however is Oblivious to Love.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Her legendary fencing abilities were a Crippling Overspecialization, being useful in a competition with rules but not quite so helpful in a real fight. However, training with Lorena and joining the Plaid Kingdom Military allowed her to adapt her fighting style to be able to take on several soldiers single-handed during the invasion.
  • Unknown Rival: She considers Lorena her bitter enemy for Prince Lance's love, however, Lorena insists that they're best friends.

The Royal Family of the Polygon Kingdom

King of the Polygon Kingdom & Queen of the Polygon Kingdom

Calpernia's mother and father, rulers of the Polygon Kingdom who sent her to live far away following the scandal surrounding her curse.

  • Babies Make Everything Better: Invoked. Once Calpernia's mother figures out her daughter's curse is tied to her period, she is convinced she has a way to cure her daughter and ensure the curse stays away for at least nine months at a time. Calpernia is not enthusiastic at the thought of spending the rest of her life pregnant.
  • Parental Abandonment: Subverted. They did send Calpernia away after she seemingly killed Prince Whitney. It's later revealed the King and Queen deeply regretted this and spent years trying to reconcile with her. Unfortunately none of their letters were being delivered because Calpernia's spiders scared away all the delivery people, assuming they were intruders, so they thought Calpernia turned her back on them. The King later lambasts Curtis for never getting in touch with him all this time.
  • Spiders Are Scary: The Polygon Queen is especially terrified of spiders, which - given her daughter's curse - is problematic. Although, apparently she's been teaching herself to remain more calm around them ever since.
  • We Have Reserves: After Calpernia seemingly commits Accidental Murder and has to go into hiding, the Polygon King reassures her in a... unique way.
Polygon King: It's okay darling. This is why we have multiple daughters. ...In case one of them commits murder.

Leelathae’s Parents

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/32a6fcb8_402a_443a_96ab_5a1c491a18d1.jpeg

Leelathae’s mother and father from her home island, Jack’s parents-in-law, and the maternal grandparents of Maria, Lorena, Jamie and Gwen.

  • Properly Paranoid: Leelathae’s father warns her to not get attached to Jack once he has to leave the island, reminding her of their unwritten laws to not mingle with outsiders. Too bad she didn’t listen to him.
  • Back For The Finale: Jack brings them home instead of the omnipotent clam so they can be with their grandchildren.

Leelathae’s friends from her home island. Only one of their names are mentioned — Gaertlan, who harbors an unrequited love for Leelathae. The names of the other two are not mentioned.

  • Dogged Nice Guy: Gaertlan had been pining for Leelathae for a long time, and even made a courting vase for her. Sadly, she was Oblivious to Love and only saw him as a friend, falling in love with Jack over him.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Gaertlan to Leelathae. Not only did she fall in love with Jack over him, she even ditched Gaertlan and their home and friends to be with the other guy. That must have stung.
