Opened. I'm down for a merge with Power Trio. If more examples of "three friends, romance explored between them, friendship keeps Love Triangle from occurring" come up during cleanup (if merged), that concept can be yarded I guess.
Yeah, merge works. I'd held off on making a thread ages ago because a solution escaped me, but a merge seems to be the correct answer.
Current Project: Incorruptible Pure PurenessMerge.
Yarding "Friendship prevents Love Triangle" is free.
OP also mentions "three young protagonists, two secondary of which are Foil of each other" so it may also have a merit as an ensemble dynamic.

Merge with Power Trio.
The original YKTTW literally had no more requirement than "two opposite-gender friends of the main character" (which is only not redundant with Two Guys and a Girl because of the possibility of the main character being female). Worth noting that in older trope descriptions, "always" does not always mean "always", let alone "definitive of the trope", which is a problem when this one is so saturated with weasel words otherwise.

Come play Character Uplift Game! It's unanimous. Three Amigos will be merged into Power Trio. I've made the page a disambig, since the title refers to the movie.
What should be done with the One Hero Two Sidekicks redirect? Cut?
Also, not actually sure if Power Trio is an index or a trope. When cleaning the wicks, is it acceptable to simply move it Power Trio, or should we put it under one of the other tropes.

Hmm. It has no wicks and a few dozen inbounds, and it's too specific for "Three Amigos"/"Power Trio". I wouldn't miss it if it's cut.
Just cut One Hero Two Sidekicks due to the low inbound count and lack of wicks.

I've sent the redirect to the cutlist, but it's still showing as a green link. Is that a bug?

This trope has been in Trope Repair Shop many times.
2010: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=4mx1eqolr3w3osae2cwyglld Concern about it being too close to Power Trio. Closed due to lack of activity.
2012: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=1296948011052820100 Concern about it sharing a name with a film. This one had plenty of discussion, but it stalled.

In all of these cases, concerns have been raised that the name does not fit the trope, and is causing confusion. The name does fit the trope description as it is currently written because the description is so full of weasel words that it's too ambiguous to be useful.
The description states that Three Amigos is a Power Trio with the protagonist, a best friend of the same gender, and a best friend of the other gender. They are usually in middle school or high school. The two best friends are usually opposites in some way, like wealthy vs poor, jock vs slacker, or being of different races.
The next paragraph notes that romance will always occur (emphasis in the original), but they'll all still be friends by the end. The next notes that the trio are frequently secret keepers. The last few paragraphs discuss how the trope relates to other friend group tropes.
The film ¡Three Amigos! is about three adult men and does not appear to fit the description. The current quote is from Legend of the Three Caballeros, which is also about three adult male birds. However, the trope description's constant use of weasel words implies that adults are allowed. The only definite requirements in the description are "there are three friends, and romance is explored between the three of them." The current image is Harry, Ron, and Hermione from Harry Potter laughing together.
The laconic is "The Hero has two friends of different genders." Since there are so few definite requirements in the original description, the removal of the romance element is telling. It's also not currently in any romance indexes, which it should be if romance is supposed to be a major part of the trope. If it's not, then the only requirements are too vague. (For what it's worth, the romance seems secondary to the friendship here).
War Jay 77 created a wick check at Three Amigos Wick Check. She found:
Based on the extremely high ZCE rate, I feel like the best courses of action are to merge with Power Trio or split the entries between other group tropes.
However, if the general consensus is that the trope is distinctive, we need to figure out how people are using the trope, rename it, and clean up the description.
Wick Check
Three Amigos is an ensemble trope about a Power Trio that follows a specific pattern:This check is to see if the trope is suffering from misuse (mostly of the generic Power Trio variety). 50 wicks will be checked, examples will be alphabetized, potholes and comments will be in bold.
