Go To

The main concern of a Hate Sink is whether the narrative treats the character as someone intended to be despised.

The character in question must actually display detestable qualities, and be hated by other characters at least, or treated by the narrative like someone you are supposed to hate. The author's declared intent cements an example, but is not needed if the narrative itself treats the character as someone who is supposed to be hated.

A Hate Sink may have charismatic traits, a troubled past, or complexity, but in order for this trope to be in effect, such traits must be de-emphasized by the narrative in favour of their detestable traits.

Please note that we do not use Effort Posts.

[tup]first film Freddy but no to his sequels.

Seems like a very sad case of missing the point by the people who did the sequels though.

Added my Yakra the 13th writeup to the drafts.

I'll let Lekain and Grubba go with the next batch provided Grubba is approved.

Also @Klavice.

No Freddy is still a CM. From what I read his backstory is essentially "Got abused as a kid so became a sadistic child killing asshole".

New proposal, from Perfect Assassins.

Who's the candidate?

Dr. Samuel Greely, a Psycho Psychologist seeking to make the titular perfect assassins.

What does he do?

Greely decodes to use a Skinner box-esque device on humans, testing it on his partner's son Ben Carroway. When the police get word of this, Greely frames the partner, makes her disappear and flees to Mexico. There, he perfects his methods. Twenty-ish years later, we see how Greely conditions his goons, and it is vile. He kidnaps children and locks them in one of his boxes for years, electrifying their sole food source sp they simply take the shock out of hunger. He then forces them into Training from Hell, laughing as his men beat them into foghting back. When they're ready, Greely has them sent out to kill people and then themselves upon completion. If they fail, he locks them in their old box to trigger the massive PTSD they inevitably get from this whole situation. Luckily, Ben manages to bust up the operation and unload his gun into Greely by film's end.

Personally despicable?

He tortures children and turns them into human attack dogs.

Redeeming qualities?

None. He's just a curious Sadist.

Verdict?

And ... since Word of God helps, I'll give a [tup] to Freddy in the first movie, too.

[up][up] Mostly just petty bullying and apathy towards those being bullied. Plus raping the Woman and laughing while Miss Raton is torn apart. Love the cleverness of the foreshadowing with the way he eats cookies.

As for Ruth's children, yeah, I definitely find them detestable enough, but I was unsure if they'd count for 1) being a group and 2) their Real Life counterparts being seemingly genuinely repentant (not that that excuses anything they did).

Alright then, this is all going up:

  • American Justice: Sheriff Payden is a racist thug who treats his police department like a protection racket, forcing the local drug dealers to give him a cut under pain of death and browbeating the mayor by threatening his dog. When his men kill one of the dealers, and he personally guns down one for complaining about the corpse not having money, Payden decodes to frame Jack Justice, a black cop passing through tpwn, for the crime and then kill him for "escaping." When he captures Jack, he explains all this to him while also spputing off racist jokes. After Jack escapes, Payden tries to coax him back by threatening to have his men gang rape a woman he befriended before trying to shoot him In the Back.
  • Masked Avengers: Lin Yung Chi originally seems like a mere rich Jerkass who refuses to help the heroes out of laziness. As it turns out he's secretly the leader of the Masked Gang, whom he sends to kill people For the Evulz. He soon after starts picking off the heroes in incredibly painful ways, slaughtering the majority in his Booby Trap-filled lair. Lin even disgusts his former Number Two, who left the organization after he ordered a woman gang-raped.
  • Bernie: Marjorie "Marge" Nugent is universally despised in the town of Carthage for her Jerkass behavior. Though she becomes fond of Bernie for comforting her when her husband recently passed, she soon becomes extremely abusive and possessive of him demeaning him every day, chewing every bite 25 just to unease him, making him do errands and chores for her, quit his job, forcing him to kill an armadillo, and trapping him in her property when he tries to leave. Bernie would eventually snap from Marjorie's horrid treatment and shoot her four times In the Back killing her, to when the town found out nine months later they were more concern that Bernie would go to prison rather than Marjorie was killed.
  • James Bond series:

Soon after the alien kills his supposed best friend, Joe tries to rape her and then shoots her In the Back. His family eventually has enough and tries to leave, so Joe tries to kill them all.
  • Army of Frankensteins: Alan Jones' life before he's sent back in time absolutely sucks, and these two are significant reasons why:
    • Mrs. Henderson, Alan's landlady, sexually harasses him when trying to collect the rent. After seeing the ring Alan intends to propose to his girlfriend, Ashley, with, she demands the ring on the threat of eviction. She's also a brazen hypocrite, Slut-Shaming Ashley not five minutes after trying to sleep with a taken man.
    • Eugene, Ashley's boss, regularly hits on her even though she rejects him every time. Eventually, he starts to force kisses on her. One of the kisses happens at just the wrong time for Alan to walk in and think she's into it.
  • Mobile Suit Gundam: Gihren Zabi, the de-facto dictator of Zeon, is the first main villain of the franchise and one of the most despicable. A cold man that underestimates his enemies, Gihren is the main responsible for the One Year War, leading to the death of the half of humanity. Turning his brother's funeral into a militarist speech, Gihren kills his own father alongside the General Revil to avoid an armistice. Confronted by his sister, Gihren is apathetic at her rage at the death of their father. A megalomaniac that uses a hypocrital rhetoric about liberating the Colonies while murdering their population, Gihren had plans to reduce the population of Earth to less than one billion to ensure his complete control over the Earth Sphere. The biggest mass murderer of the Universal Century, Gihren's tyrannical legacy haunted the Earth Sphere even beyond his death.
  • Mobile Suit Gundam SEED:
    • Muzuta Azrael is the leader of the terrorist hate group Blue Cosmos. Motivated for hatred against the Coordinators, Azrael uses his influences to ensure control over the Atlantic Federation and the Earth Alliance Forces. Having used Blue Cosmos to cause a accident that kills thousands of Coordinator civilians, Azrael embraces the radicalization of the war, intending to end the war with a genocidal attack towards the homeland of the Coordinators, without care for any of his allies and constantly abusing them, leading to his own death once the Captain of his ship betrays him. A genocidal bigot that used children and teenagers in experiments to enchance their combat skills, Azrael's actions continued haunting the Cosmic Era.
    • Al Da Flaga was an abusive parent that disinherited his own son, Mu La Flaga, for a grudge with his mother, seeing Mu as tainted for his mother's DNA. A narcissist that saw himself as a superior human, Al contacted the amoral scientist Ulen Hibiki and funded his investigation to clonate himself. Subjecting his clone to emotional abuse and traumatizing him, Al clonated himself again after discovering about the genetical defects of his clones. Dying in a fire caused for his first clone, said clone grew up as a misanthrope manipulator that saw himself as the embodiment of the failures of the world.
    • Ulen Hibiki is the biological father of Kira Yamato and Cagalli Yula Athha. A amoral scientist that wanted to create the Ultimate Coordinator, Ulen forced his own wife to uses their own embryos for the experiments without concern for her mental health, "allowing" her to have a daughter just to shut her. • Night Huntress: Max Williams, the estranged brother of Don Williams, is a former FBI Agent turned vampire. In the ensuing years, Max slakes his bloodlust as a mercenary under Ian's auspices. Disdainful of his half-breed daughter, Max has the erstwhile occupants of Cat's former childhood home murdered by a bounty hunter in order to lure her into a trap upon learning that she is alive, so he can have her killed, all behind Ian's back. Upon being confronted by Cat, Max taunts the former about the circumstances of her conception. Abandoning Ian in favor of ending his daughter's life, Max ambushes Cat and Justina, shooting and brutally torturing the former, and threatening to sexually assault the latter. Max expresses his intention to dismember Cat in order to prevent her from possibly being resuscitated as a ghoul, only to be neutralized by Crispin "Bones" Russell III before he can carry out his plans. A disgusting sadist, driven by a desire to inflict needless cruelty, Max demonstrates some of the most detestable qualities in humans and vampires alike.
  • Ace Attorney:
    • Roger Retinz is a sleazy television producer and former magician who was kicked out of Troupe Gramarye for injuring his arm. He sets up an elaborate frame plot and defamation to frame Trucy for the murder of his own apprentice, and drag her name through the mud. Later, he murders Gary, and he and his gang break into Nicole's house with the intention of killing her entire family and Margo, then taking Nicole with him.
  • Game of Thrones:
    • Harald Karstark became head of House Karstark after his father's execution. Unlike his father's motivation of avenging his sons, Harald showed no care for his brothers, allying with the Lannister-affiliated Boltons even though his father wanted nothing to do with the Lannisters. Agreeing with a plan to breach the Night's Watch's neutrality by killing their Lord Commander, Harald also showed little care for his liege lord, standing by while Ramsay Bolton murdered his father, stepmother and newborn half-brother, then demanded that the Boltons' maester address Ramsay as "Lord Bolton". It's implied that Karstark is also a pedophile. Throughout his brief screen time, Harald Karstark showed himself to be a Professional Butt-Kisser who crossed lines that his father would not, and died an ignominious death.

New proposal, from Braindead.

Who's the candidate?

Vera Cosgrove, domineering mother of our protagonist Lionel.

What does she do?

Ever since her husband drowned (more on that later), Vera has bullied Lionel and kept him so isolated that he can do nothing but dote on her. Once Lionel gets a date, she tries to guilt him into not going and stalks him when she does, getting bitten by a Sumatran rat-monkey in the process. She uses this to guilt her son into breaking up with his girlfriend, but dies from the infected bite a few days later.

However, this is not the end of Vera. You see, the Sumatran rat-monkey's bite causes humans to become zombies, and Vera starts turning random people. Lionel traps her and her victims in his basement, but eventually they escape and go on a rampage. During this sequence, it's revealed that Vera drowned her husband and his mistress. She ends up turning into a giant monster (long story), and tries to force Lionel into her womb to be with her forever. However, he busts out of her and she falls into her house, which was set on fire during all the chaos, burning alive.

Personally despicable?

Domineering, emotionally manipulative, possessive, and a murderer, and that's before she becomes a zombie.

Redeeming qualities?

The film is completely fuckin' bonkers, and Vera's an exaggerated caricature of the Norma Bates type of mother, but she's still portrayed as a vile woman with zero good to her.

Verdict?

[tup] Vera.

[up] The only difference there needs to be between Hate Sink and Complete Monster entries is as follows: In a Monster entry, you need to list their worst deeds, while for HS, you are supposed to list their most despicable personality traits and actions. There can be some overlap between the two writing styles, and that is not a bad thing as long as the HS entry emphasizes loathsome traits as opposed to atrocities. Like the header says: "Admittedly, this trope is less complex, but, because a Hate Sink carries out loathsome actions the same way a Complete Monster carries out evil actions, and a Magnificent Bastard carries out clever actions, it is ostensibly necessary to write these entries with a similar structure, albeit usually with a shorter paragraph."

As for which characters you EP'd, check the pending writeups.

[down] I don't know if those moments were emphasized in the first movie.

Yes to Vera.

Time for Grubba!

Who is Grubba?

Grubba is a Clubba and is the seemingly helpful promoter of the fighting arena in the world of Rogueport, the Glitz Pit in Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door. He's got a southern accent and is seemingly a nice caring guy. Unfortunately everything you would expect from him is an act. And he's the chapter's Big Bad.

What has he done that makes him so despicable?

Grubba starts off the chapter as a seemingly polite and affable if a bit too eager too watch people of the Mushroom Kingdom kick the stuffing out of each other, announcer to the Glitz Pit. But clues about his true personality as an uncaring sociopath begin to pop up after Bandy Andy and KP Pete disappear, and Mario starts getting clues from a mysterious individual known as X, later revealed to be the original suspect for the strange going ons at the Glitz Pit, Jolene. Along with a different person threatening Mario and his partners not to explore the Glitz Pit or they will be dead meat. (Dark threat for a Mario game) There's other warnings from them as well involving the crystal stars, and since Jolene would regularly catch you in the act of doing something, she was the prime suspect for those e-mails.

Of course it turned out Bandy Andy and King K Pete were drained of their energy in the second floor of the storage room where Bandy, barely alive says not to go to the arena when there are no lights on.

Before that, Mario finds out that Grubba intends to make Mario and Jolene disappear and that he knows about the Crystal Stars that Mario has been collecting. Of course, when Mario wins the champ's belt, he heads into Grubba's room through a secret passage in the champion's room. Grubba is Caught Monologuing and Mario follows him into the Glitz Pit arena where Grubba reveals a giant Crystal Star powered machine that drains fighters of their energy and helps the 62 year old Grubba stay youthful. Grubba scoffs at Mario and his partner when they call him out on it and decides to use the machine to transform into the Chapter's boss, Macho Grubba.

Macho Grubba then has a fight with Mario mentioning he's using moves so deadly they had to be made illegal. And after being beaten by Mario, Grubba's machine is destroyed and Grubba, being an extreme Blood Knight, admits Mario made a good fight.

Jolene appears and Grubba reveals he made Prince Mush the previous champion disappear to which Mush comes out of the crystal star meaning they can bring characters back to life. Jolene and Mush give Mario the Crystal Star and the chapter ends.

Evil Is Cool or Mitigating Qualities?

Grubba is not cool in the least. He's scummy, slimy, and the closest thing we get to something positive about him is the fact he's a graceful loser (more to do with his Blood Knight self) and him randomly mentioning being poor. To contrast him, Jolene and Mush were also poor and are not at all vile. So easy pass.

Verdict?

Going with a yes.

[up][up] For those unsure about the original A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), here's James Rolfe's Monster Madness review of that film, which highlights the differences between it and the sequels, particularly with Kruger and the dream sequences. It's also interesting to note that the original film had a very small teenager cast (only 4) whereas the later films increases the number likely to give Freddy more chances to do elaborate kills.
