    Kimberly Bond
Played by: OPALGARNET 16

Kimberly Bond is a so-called "lingual consultant" (actually a part-time teacher and part-time philologist) who works at the Striaton City Trainer's School. She has an immense love of languages and a strong desire to learn Japanese and teach Monese. Kim is normally stoic, compassionate, and overtly serious, but has a soft side for cute Pokémon... or at least those she believes to be cute. She currently owns twenty-two different Pokémon, almost all of whom are named after a famous person- mostly musicians.

Her Hasslemon handle prior to her Persona awakening was lingualConsultant (LC), whereas after it was changed to renewedPhilologist (RP)

First Appearance: Page 22472

Tropes associated with Kim include:

  • Cuteness Proximity: Do not get her in front of a member of the Joltik line (especially Galvantula) if you value your eardrums, because she will start squealing externally about how cute she thinks they are. She's even like this over text, as 9-Volt learned the hard way. In recent posts, she has been getting better, but still finds herself squealing internally upon seeing a cute Pokemon, especially a Galvantula and even more especially if that Galvantula is Cuddles... who doesn't seem to mind. For that matter, don't get her anywhere near a Feraligatr, Swampert, Hydreigon, Grotle, Cinderace, or Psyduck either.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Sometimes, but not nearly to the extent of Kendall or Kamui and definitely not to the extent of her own Pokemon, most notably Sinatra and John.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Kim was a touch more easily exciteable in earlier posts, and also used to carry around a Pokedex (which she no longer does).
  • I Hate Past Me: Over the course of the RP, Kim grows to regret her former behaviors of incessance, most notably towards Kendall, and after her Persona awakening, she strives to not make those same mistakes again. She's getting better... mostly.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Her conversations with 9-Volt and Hoops in Stow-on-Side confirmed that she envies Kendall, Ian, and Evelyn for their powers, their ability to speak the Japanese language fluently, and the fact that they have done things such as fight threats to the multiverse whereas she feels she hasn't done anything exciting since joining the J-Team. It's heavily implied, if not outright stated, that this is the reason why she claimed herself to be a "lingual consultant" (a job that doesn't exist) rather than what she actually is: a philologist. 9-Volt and Hoops promptly get her to realize that just because she's not special, it doesn't mean she shouldn't take pride in her accomplishments, and it's one of the main things that ultimately leads to the realization that awakens her Persona.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: In a similar vein to the above, one of the reasons Kim joined the J-Team was because she wanted to make friends with people, given that she grew up friendless. She ends up getting a ton of friends, most notably Ian and Evelyn, and in a speech at a J-Team meeting, she thanks them all for getting her to where she is today, finally feeling like she belongs.
  • Image Song: "Distant Early Warning" by Rush, which is where she got her summoning catchphrase, "Red alert, [name]!", from.
  • Insistent Terminology: As Kim is a philologist and lingual buff, she cares very much about proper pronunciation, and can sometimes be a bit too insistent on the technically "correct" pronunciation. Most notably, she is quick to tell just about everybody that doesn't know otherwise that Kendall's last name is supposed to be pronounced to rhyme with "fever" note  rather than "ever" note .
  • It's All My Fault: If Kim feels as though she has made a bad impression on someone or something, most notably Kendall, she has a tendency to beat herself up about it. Hard.
  • Last-Name Basis: Kim often insists on referring to other people by their last name, as though they are colleagues, and only refers to her Pokemon, her close friends, or people whose last name she doesn't know by their first name. For example, she refers to Kendall as "Rever" and all of his Pokemon barring 9-Volt and Lucario by their last name as humans (Shunner, Barrett, Strider, Hikari, and so on).
  • Meaningful Name: Her current Hasslemon handle is renewedPhilologist (RP), which reflects her renewed sense of self-esteem and her desire to no longer be living a lie about herself and her profession. See also Meaningful Rename below.
  • Meaningful Rename: Her former Hasslemon handle was lingualConsultant (LC)- what she claimed was her job despite it not actually existing, and a indication that she was hiding under a mask of stoicism. After her Persona awakening, however, she changed it to renewedPhilologist (RP) offscreen, reflecting her desire to no longer live a lie about who she is.
  • My Favorite Shirt: Is almost always seen wearing a lab coat with a 2112 pin on it, a remnant of her job as a philologist and teacher at the Trainer's School.
  • Not So Above It All: See Cuteness Proximity above.
  • Not So Stoic: You'd be surprised by how often Kim bursts into tears. This most notably happens if she's feeling extremely guilty or extremely relieved.
    • An even bigger indicator of this is if Kim ever panics for any reason, whether it be due to her first time experiencing a Legendary Facepalm courtesy of Kendall Rever, or due to her thinking that the J-Team is going to disband.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: If Kim breaks in any way from her stoic personality (most notably, if she bursts into tears or panicks for any reason), things are likely going very, very wrong for her. This was most notably shown after her conversation with 9-Volt in text in the Stow-on-Side Gym- she felt so guilty about her emotions that she flat-out bawled. Another example was at the J-Team meeting, where after finding out about what happened during the Final Shell and about Ian's involvement in the summoning of the Fanatic, she is very uncharacteristically vocal in expressing her disappointment with him. It, unfortunately, starts off a cascade of events that lead to yet another moment of this for her: her panic attack in the halls of the Stormchaser, when she believes the J-Team is going to disband.
  • Pronouncing My Name for You: Or rather, pronouncing another's name for them— if someone mispronounces a word or a name, she is extremely quick to correct them. This is especially the case if someone within her general vicinity calls Kendall "Colton Kendall 'REH-vuhr'" (i.e. to rhyme with "never"), to which she will always respond with simply:
    Kim: REE-vuhr. Rhymes with "fever".
  • The Stoic: Probably her defining personality trait. Kim is, for the most part, a very serious and stoic individual, often not really reacting to things that others would find unusual, or at the very least having a relatively subdued reaction to them.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Kim has a fear of extremely high heights.
  • You Called Me "X"; It Must Be Serious: Kim usually refers to people by their last name, so if she ever calls anyone by their first name, it's usually a sign that she's extremely scared and/or guilty. This was most notably shown during the aftermath of Kim's first experience with Kendall's Legendary Facepalm. Not knowing where her friends were, she started getting more and more terrified by the minute, and eventually got so scared that she screamed for Kendall using his first name (which he was still going by at the time).
    • It's the exact reverse with Ian and Evelyn. She got to know them by their first names first, so if she calls them "Salberg" and "Promeneau", respectively, it's a sign that things have gone out of hand. The most notable example of this occurred after her reunion with Ian in Hulbury, when she wanted to surprise him. She told him that she missed the battle between him and Nessa (when in fact, she had seen the entire thing), and upon learning that she lied to him, Ian promptly went into a mode of Tranquil Fury that [[O.O.C. Is Serious Business was so unexpected], it terrified Kim into calling him "Salberg" out of respect (and as a way to promise him she'd never do it again). Ian, naturally, proceeded to react with shock to this.

Kimberly Bond's Pokémon

    In General

    Paul

Paul (Caterpie -> Metapod -> Butterfree)

Kimberly Bond's carefree, cheerful Butterfree, who serves as her starter Pokemon. He is named after Paul McCartney of the Beatles, and is one of the four "Beatlemons" along with John, George, and Ringo.

Tropes associated with him include:

  • All-Loving Hero: Paul is generally kindhearted to just about everyone he meets, though there are a few exceptions.
  • Apologetic Attacker: In the event where Paul ever is forced to battle, he usually ends up being this.
  • Apologizes a Lot: Naturally, given that he's a Nice Guy. He'll sometimes apologize for the same thing multiple times within the same sentence.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Despite his Mild nature and his carefree lifestyle, Paul has his limits just like any other Pokemon on Kim's team, and is able to dish out some very hard-hitting attacks in the heat of battle or if the person in question is an absolute Hate Sink.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: Paul is part Bug-type. He leans far more on the "cute" side, however.
  • Blow You Away: Paul, being a Butterfree, is part Flying-type.
  • Brutal Honesty: Surprisingly, Paul can be very much capable of this when the time calls for it, most notably towards the Beatlemons and his own Trainer. The most notable example of this happens after Kim's loss to Kendall in the League, when Paul is the one to tell Kim, despite her wanting to believe otherwise, that 9-Volt is not her friend and is far more of an acquaintance. He also later tells Kim that Kendall had a point about Kim not truly knowing what to do with her life. It's enough to make both Ringo- usually the main practicioner of this- and later even Elton to admit that Paul has a point and that his advice shouldn't go unheeded.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: His text color is green, notably making him the sole mon on the team to not have his main color appear anywhere on his body. It possibly became associated with him due to his namesake being a vegetarian.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Paul, being a Butterfree, is a very weak and frail Pokemon. He also is able to use Psychic, Air Slash, Aerial Ace, and Hyper Beam to their full advantage, as well as being able to use multiple powder moves.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Paul is calm and unflappable in just about any situation to the point where not even Bug-types or Fire-types scare him. If he drops this, it's one of his biggest indicators of O.O.C. Is Serious Business.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: In his human form, who goes by the alias of "Judas McCartney", he has long brown hair, pink sunglasses, purple clothing, and a flower pin in his hair. If you were just walking across the street and happened to see Judas in public, chances are you'd likely think he was a girl at first glance.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Like all of the other members of Kimberly Bond's team, he has one of these. While Kim is walking through Viridian City counting syllables and desperately searching for other members of the J-Team, Paul is happily singing The Beatles' "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" without a care in the world, showcasing his love of the Beatles' music as well as his carefree personality.
    • Later on, at Rowan's lab, he gets a second moment of this. During the fight between the mons that would later be caught and named Hanuman, Ritchie, and Kaylan, Paul goes over to them and is able to diffuse the fight by talking to them and figuring out what was going on, without so much as raising his voice. It's an early indicator of Paul's Martial Pacifist nature, as well as a bit of foreshadowing towards his later dynamic with the rest of the Beatlemons.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones: In Paul's case (as with all of the mons on Kim's team), it's Jigsaw— which makes sense, considering that he gaslit and tortured Kim into thinking that she wasn't worthy of friends or love.
  • Forced Sleep: Paul's Signature Move is Sleep Powder, which is almost always the first move he uses in battle.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Amongst the Beatlemons, he is the Phlegmatic, being the kindhearted and mellow peacekeeper of the group.
    • In the five-temperament ensemble he forms with the first five mons on Kim's team, meanwhile, he serves as the leukine member, due to Geddy taking over as the Phlegmatic.
  • Humble Hero: In contrast to Sinatra and John, Paul doesn't necessarily enjoy being the center of attention. Due to this, he's more or less perfectly okay with being relatively Out of Focus compared to the rest of the group. That being said, he does genuinely love his Trainer and is okay with being given some attention by her.
  • Image Song: According to Goldenheart388, his image song is "Hey Jude," originally sung by The Beatles. This trend continues for all of Kim's Pokemon except for Kaylan, Orwell, Peechee, and Boseman. Incidentally, said song was written and recorded by Paul McCartney, and the trend also continues for all four Beatlemons. His Broadway image song, meanwhile, is "Love Thy Neighbor" from The Prom. Both songs serve as a look at Paul's nature as a peacekeeping Nice Guy who just wants everyone to love each other for who they are. The former song, however, was specifically written as a song to comfort John Lennon's son in the aftermath of his parents' divorce, tying back in to Paul the Butterfree's nature as Kim's confidant.
    • His Japanese character theme, meanwhile, is "Heart wa Otaege", the third ending theme to Kaguya-sama: Love Is War. The song relates directly to Paul's platonic love for his Trainer (albiet, given the lyrics of the song, it ends up appearing very romantic).
  • Meaningful Name: He was named after Paul McCartney of the Beatles and Wings— and Butterfree is a Bug/Flying type Pokemon. The namesake also fits with his carefree and peaceful nature, given that a lot of Beatles songs are about peace and love and also given that McCartney himself is seen as the most carefree member of the Fab Four as well as an ardent supporter of vegetarianism. McCartney is also seen by many as the de facto leader of the Beatles, and Paul plays a similar role among the four Beatlemons.
    • His Hasslemon handle, butterfreeCrossing (BC), serves as a pun on a zebra crossing, similar to the one featured on the cover of the Beatles' famous Abbey Road album.
  • Martial Pacifist: He prefers to deal with conflict peacefully, as seen during the scene where he helps to maintain peace between the mons that would eventually become Kaylan, Hanuman, and Ritchie. That being said, though, he won't hesitate to use physical moves when push comes to shove.
  • Mellow Fellow: Arguably Paul's most well-known personality trait. He is extremely patient and carefree, and doesn't let much of anything faze him. According to his bio, he is completely unafraid of Fire and Rock-type Pokemon, and is in fact very good friends with certain mons of those types (one of which is a fellow Beatlemon).
  • Motor Mouth: Naturally, given his realistic speech patterns, he is very much prone to extremely rambling speeches. His self-demonstrating page on the wiki is so full of them that he ends up lampshading it:
Paul: Sorry, am I rambling? I'm really sorry 'bout that.
  • Named After Someone Famous: In this case, Paul McCartney of the Beatles; see Meaningful Name above.
  • Nice Guy: Out of the original five members of Kim's team, Paul is usually the one most likely to keep the peace among the group, though Geddy doesn't fall very far behind. He's definitely the one most likely to try and keep the peace out of the Beatlemons, though naturally he and John do sometimes get into fights.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: The Nice to Sinatra's Mean and Dio's In-Between.
  • Not Even Bothering with the Accent: Averted; Paul is notably the only Beatlemon to speak in a Liverpulidan accent. According to Goldenheart388, this was done out of necessity (she couldn't do a Liverpulidan accent and there weren't many TV characters she could think of with Liverpulidan accents that she could use as Paul's Hypothetical Casting; only Jess Harnell as Wakko Warner fit the bill and won out).
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: While an example of this has yet to be seen in WAAPT, according to Goldenheart388, any instance of Beware the Nice Ones— specifically Paul going completely on the offensive in battle and never once using sleeping moves to subdue the opponent— would count as the biggest factor of this. Another indicator is whenever Paul is seen showing genuine fear towards someone, given that normally he's a practioner of Dissonant Serenity and is very calm and unflappable in most situations.
    • More subtly, you'll know when Paul is getting serious— either with his friends or with his own Trainer— if he stops rambling at length and starts speaking in short, succinct sentencesnote  without dropping a single verbal tic. According to Goldenheart388, this is his way of letting either his friends or his Trainer know that they really screwed up big time, and it would likely be enough to scare John into submission. Naturally, he also speaks this way towards peoplemons he unequivocally hates.
  • Out of Focus: Despite being Kim's first Pokemon, he's featured the least out of the original five. However, he does get more screentime when the Beatlemons are caught by Kim, serving as a leader to the rest of the group. He also gets a prominent amount of screentime in the scene leading up to Dave's evolution into a Dubwool.
  • Personality Swap: Switches with Sinatra on April Fool's Day 2021.
  • Pretty Butterflies: Naturally, given that Paul is a Butterfree.
  • Realistic Diction Is Unrealistic: Averted; Paul's dialogue is meant to sound as realistic as possible, and is specifically meant to emulate the Verbal Tics of the real Paul McCartney; as such, there is a lot of repetition, pausing in the middle of sentences, rambling on and on, and a frequent, repeated use of the words "y'know" and "really". Especially the former, since, again, Paul McCartney(one video counted the number of times he said it in an interview, and it was ''48'').
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The humble, easygoing, and carefree Blue Oni to John's egotistical, sarcastic, and hammy Red Oni. He's also the Blue Oni to the charismatic Brooklyn rager Sinatra's Red.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: He could possibly be this towards John, considering that he usually appears oblivious to all of his vitrolic remarks. Either that, or he is aware of John's sarcasm and just takes it in stride.
  • Significant Birth Date: His birthday, June 18th, is shared with that of his namesake. This trend continues for all of Kim's mons barring Orwell, Peechee, and Boseman.
  • Something Only They Would Say: Besides the obvious process of elimination, his pause-filled, rambling speech patterns and more notably his Verbal Tic was what allowed Kim to identify him during the Bond or Break game for Grohl's Ampharosite.
  • Support Party Member: Paul's main role among the team. If he ever does participate in battle, he'll usually use status moves first.
  • Tarot Motifs: As one of Kim's confidants, he is represented by the Emperor card, representing his status as The Leader of both the Beatlemons and of Kim's team in general.
  • Unconventional Formatting: His typing quirk on Hasslemon is as follows: green text, all lowercase letters, no ending punctuation, with his words encased in curly brackets that start with a hashtag and every word followed by a zero to make it resemble a submarine.
    • #{or 0 in 0 other 0 words 0 it 0 looks 0 like 0 y'know 0 it 0 looks 0 like 0 this}
    • The rest of the Beatlemons all have variants on the above quirk, barring Paul's caveat that every word or phrase that is a pun on a Beatles song or album (i.e. "yesterday", "help", "let it be", "abbey", "road", or "abbey road", "think for yourself", etc.) is capitalized and italicized. This is likely a reference to Paul's more overt adoration of the band that he was named after compared to all the other Beatlemons.
  • Verbal Tic: See Realistic Diction Is Unrealistic-- see that trope above, it's really-- y'know, it's pretty much exactly how Paul speaks in the roleplay, y'know, they meant for it to be like that.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With John, although he takes most, if not all of John's vitriol in stride and generally seems oblivious to his sarcastic remarks.

    Sinatra

Sinatra (Sentret -> Furret)

Kim's sarcastic and vain Furret with a love of performing, and the second Pokemon she caught on her initial journey. In contrast with his cute looks, Sinatra is very much akin to his namesake, being a somewhat vain Deadpan Snarker with a bit of a Hair-Trigger Temper. That being said, though, he does have a heart, and is willing to come through for his friends in the end.

BeSideS cApitAlizing the FirSt letter oF every word, he AlSo cApitAlizeS the letterS F, A, And S- the initiAlS oF hiS nAmeSAke.

Tropes associated with him include:

  • Action Initiative: Being a Furret, he naturally knows Quick Attack. It happens to line up very well with his main strategy in battle, which, according to him, is "fight first, ask questions later".
  • Ask a Stupid Question...: ...and Sinatra will, more often than not, snark back at you.
Dio: (to Sinatra) Wait a second, aren't you that Sentret who sang that Frank Sinatra song?
    Sinatra: (with pride) Sure am!
    Dio: She caught you?
    Sinatra: You better believe it!
    Dio: What's your name?
    Dio: (beat) ...Figures.
  • Attention Whore: Ohhhhh yes. Most notably, he became extremely miffed when he wasn't allowed to get a chance to play the trumpet in the New Dawn's Dreamers performance— even if he later admitted that Kamui's performance of "Jambi" was better than anything they could have done. His backstory states that this attitude sparked from people giving him money in the streets as a result of him being a traveling musician.
  • Badass Adorable: A cute little Furret... yet one who is exceedingly powerful. Even if his defenses aren't the best in the world, he is capable of using moves of 13 of the existing 18 types, among them Blizzard, Shock Wave, and Flamethrower. He also has access to Foresight, which allows him to counteract his usual immunity to Ghost type Pokemon (although, naturally, he's annoyed that he hasn't gotten a chance to ever use it yet).
  • Berserk Button: While not paying attention to Sinatra or forgetting to use him is practically a given, Sinatra's other massive berserk button— and perhaps his biggest— is injustice of any kind, particularly towards his friends and Trainer. Most notably, he was incensed upon finding out about what happened to Dio, and his self-demonstrating page makes it very clear how relieved he is that Dio has a better Trainer now.
  • Brooklyn Rage: As is naturally befitting of a hotheaded Furret with a Small Name, Big Ego. To wit, his Hypothetical Casting also has this.
  • Brutal Honesty: Given his Deadpan Snarker tendencies, he's decidedly unafraid to say whatever is on his mind, no matter how harsh it may be. It's the main reason he has an Adamant nature— as well as the main reason he gets compared to Kendall so often.
  • Characterization Marches On: While Sinatra had all of his familiar personality traits upon his introduction (his lighthearted snark, his love of Frank Sinatra, and later, his Brooklyn Rage), he also had a bit of a tendency to talk directly to the audience, often about things that he believed didn't make any sense in the story (he had no idea what "New York" actually was, for instance). Slightly justified, as it wasn't until after his evolution that said fourth-wall breaking traits disappeared and he formally settled into the personality he has today.
  • Character Tics: His trademark Fascinating Eyebrow, which he usually does in tandem with a Disapproving Look or just whenever he seems particularly interested in something.
  • The Charmer: He's based in part on his own namesake. This naturally comes into play. In fact, he's so much of this that he is able to get other wild Pokemon to join in on his music performances, as his first appearance showed.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: He will sometimes serve as this to the more crazy members of Kim's team, most notably Peechee and especially Jagger.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: His main text color is cinnamon.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Arguably one of his most defining traits besides his massive ego, though it's not on display as often as John's is.
  • Death Glare: Due to his natural cuteness, he's incapable of giving one of these completely effectively. Usually, the best he can give is a Disapproving Look combined with his trademark Fascinating Eyebrow.
  • Disapproving Look: Gives these very frequently, especially to the crazier members of Kim's team.
  • Establishing Character Moment: His very first line immediately sets him up as a lighthearted snark machine:
Kim: I'm so excited that I actually found a Pokemon!
Sinatra: Actually, it was more like ya attracted one.
  • Expy: Of both his namesake and, to a lesser extent, his hypothetical casting, according to Goldenheart388.
  • Facepalm: He's done this plenty of times. Due to all the Kendall comparisons, it's sometimes common for another mon, usually Dio or Jagger, to look around for any collateral damage afterwards.
  • Fascinating Eyebrow: His main character tic, and often his default facial expression.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Amongst the first five mons on Kim's team, he's the Choleric— a lightly acerbic and explosive Attention Whore that is nonetheless a massive Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
  • Fragile Speedster: For all his blistering speed and great attack, he's not so great in the defense department even with moves like Reversal at his disposal. He learned this the hard way against Romea, as he found himself no match for her extremely raw power.
  • Frisky Ferret: He's a Furret. This is to be expected.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Given who he's named after, this was pretty much expected. It's downplayed, however; Sinatra's more likely to go off if no one pays attention to him (or if anyone happens to hurt his Trainer or friends), as well as in the heat of battle.
  • Hidden Depths: He is an exceptionally good singer, and has performed Frank Sinatra songs twice in the series— both times being met with massive applause.
  • Hot-Blooded: Particularly in battle, in which his battle style is specifically described by him in his SDP as "fight first, ask questions later". As such, save for friendly battles, he's not one for much banter. The only exception is if he's battling Ghost types, in which case his first move will be to use Foresight.
  • "I Am Great!" Song: Both "New York, New York" and "My Way".
  • Image Song: "My Way", of course. It was written from the perspective of someone looking back on their life with (almost) no regrets, and considering Sinatra's vanity and stubborn nature, it works really well. Not to mention that now that he has Kimberly Bond has a Trainer, the thoughts mentioned in the song are likely quite accurate to how Sinatra would likely feel when that day eventually comes note . In terms of Broadway, his character theme is "Don't Break the Rules" from Catch Me If You Can, which similarly is befitting of his stubborn and snarky nature and the Jerk with a Heart of Gold side of his personality in particular. Not to mention that the song in question is a very jazzy song, complete with trumpets.
    • Sinatra's obsession with jazz and big band music even carries over to his Japanese character theme, "Wild Side" by ALI (better known as the first opening theme for Beastars), which has similar themes to "My Way" and deals, once again, with Sinatra's lust for life and stubborn nature. However, the song also makes subtle references to his Brutal Honesty and vanity— and then, of course, there are the last two lines of the song:
All I was talkin' 'bout was music...
    And that's called jazz~!
    • Notably, Sinatra's Japanese character theme is the only one to have a majority of the lines in English.
  • Interspecies Friendship: With the rest of the team, natch.
  • I See Dead People: His favorite move is Foresight, which he uses to counteract his natural immunity to Ghost-types.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: And the heart of gold shows up more often than you'd think. Despite his vanity and Hair-Trigger Temper, there have been plenty of times when it's made clear that Sinatra genuinely does care about the rest of his friends. Among his numerous moments:
    • His evolution. The entire reason why Sinatra performed "My Way" in the first place was to calm down fellow Brooklyn rager Hanuman, whose Blaze ability had just activated in the midst of a Battle Royale.
    • More notably, him comforting Freddie— and later, Geddy— when the former is concerned and scared about what will happen to the latter in the wake of him running away after finding out about Neil Peart's death.
    • And later on, he does it again— this time towards Orwell in the midst of his Heroic BSoD after his evolution.
    • He even lampshades it- and calls out the readers for assuming otherwise— on his self-demonstrating page:
Sinatra: But don't you dare think that this (i.e. his Hair-Trigger Temper) doesn't mean that I don't care! I absolutely care! What kind of team member would I be if I didn't care?! Ya think I can't control myself whenever Freddie's around? Jeez! I mean, I did it whenever he was scared of anything; give credit where it's due, why dontcha?!
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: While initially reluctant, he ultimately agrees to Kim's concession to Kendall in the Battle of the Bands, acknowledging that Kamui's performance of "Jambi" was far better than anything else they could have done.
  • Large Ham: Whenever he's singing. Or whenever his Hair-Trigger Temper comes out.
  • Meaningful Name: He's named after Frank Sinatra, who has similarly been reported as a hot-tempered and stubborn perfectionist with a love of music (and, like the Furret, never learned to actually read it). Of course, he was also established as Sinatra's favorite artist from the start, and in-universe, this is what gave him his nickname.
    • His Hasslemon handle, wanderingMustelid (WM), is a reference to the famous "walking Furret" meme, as well as a Wandering Minstrel. Both of these serve as a reference to his past as a traveling street musician before meeting Kim. Incidentally, the abbreviation, WM, is the initials of his character theme, "My Way", reversed.
  • Named After Someone Famous: In this case, Frank Sinatra; see above for more.
  • The Napoleon: Downplayed, as Sinatra, being a Furret, is 5'11". However, that's 5'11" head to tail— his actual body is still quite short, and his temper certainly matches when it comes out. His Small Name, Big Ego doesn't hurt matters, either.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: The Mean to Paul's Nice and Dio's In-Between.
  • Non-Elemental: He's a Normal-type Pokemon, and uses mostly Normal-type moves, even though he is capable of using plenty of other coverage moves. So far, the most coverage he's gotten on-screen has been Brick Break.
  • Not So Above It All: He was among the first mons to switch over to having a typing quirk on Hasslemon.
  • Odd Friendship: Sinatra and Orwell— the former is the first five's Only Sane Man; the latter is a sensitive Cloudcuckoolander with a Dark and Troubled Past who speaks in Newspeak.
  • Only Sane Man: Fills this role among the original 5, though Paul and Geddy aren't too far behind in that regard. Even then, Paul and Geddy are more willing to get involved with nonsense than Sinatra is.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: His two biggest indicators of this are any sign of Sarcasm Failure (for obvious reasons) and resorting to Tranquil Fury rather than lashing out at people. He'll also be more methodical in terms of his battle strategies if he faces anyone that he knows for a fact is someone who shouldn't be messed with.
    • In terms of typing, just like all the other members of Kim's team, you'll know that something's up with him if he drops his typing quirk.
  • Out of Focus: Not as much compared to Paul (he's been shown in multiple on-screen battles, for one), but he's still not often shown as much compared to other members of Kim's team.
  • Personality Swap: Switches with Paul on April Fools' Day 2021.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: He was this as a Sentret; this is downplayed when he evolves into a Furret, as his body is still short, but counting his tail, he's 5'11". Despite this, he is still really powerful when the chips are down, and is even able to see through ghosts.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The hotheaded, vain, and snarky Red to Paul's Blue. Funnily enough, he's the Blue to Dio's Red, if only due to Dio's much more vivacious personality.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Naturally; he's a Furret.
  • Running on All Fours: Sinatra does this; though he usually walks around on two legs.
  • Significant Birth Date: Sinatra's birth date, December 12th, is shared with his namesake. This trait is shared with every member of Kim's team save for Orwell, Peechee, and Boseman.
  • The Smart Guy: Fills this role among the first five mons on Kim's team.
  • Something Only They Would Say: His accent giveaway notwithstanding, five words gave his identity away: "great big part of it." It's a subtle call-back to his "New York, New York" performance that introduced him.
  • Street Smart: Both literally and figuratively; he traveled the world performing music before he met Kim.
  • Tarot Motifs: According to Goldenheart388, his associated Tarot card is The Magician, which represents his charismatic and vain nature.
  • Transformation Sequence: Evolved into a Furret while singing "My Way", in the first on-screen evolution of Goldenheart388's in the RP.
  • Unconventional Formatting: His typing quirk on Hasslemon is simple, but still falls into this: cinnamon text, with the letters F, A, and S being capitalized in addition to any letters at the beginning of words (FAS being the initials of Frank Albert Sinatra).
  • Vocal Dissonance: As with many tropes before, it's downplayed. His Hypothetical Casting is Bradley Cooper as Rocket in the MCU... pitched up a bit.
  • Wandering Minstrel: What his life was like before he met Kim. He served as a traveling musician and often performed music for other wild Pokemon.

    Dio

Dio (Gligar -> Gliscor)

Kim's boisterous, fun-loving, yet very friendly Gliscor, with a love of battling and an immense love of rock and roll music. Despite his fun-loving exterior, Dio is haunted by his tragic past with his old abusive Trainer, and as such has a very strong desire to make Kim proud of him. He also gets very sad whenever he loses, believing that any loss of his is directly his fault due to said old Trainer. Regardless of this, though, he still has an immense lust for life and a strong desire to make people and Pokemon around him happy.

TYPES ENTIRELY IN CAPS, AND WILL SOMETIMES USE MULTIPLE EXCLAMATION POINTS WHENEVER HE GETS PARTICULARLY EXCITED.
INITIALLY, HE DIDN'T USE PUNCTUATION WHEN HE TYPED, BUT EVENTUALLY DID GROW TO USE IT.
HE IS, HOWEVER, THINKING OF CHANGING HIS TYPING QUIRK DUE TO IT BEING THE EXACT SAME ONE AS KARKAT VANTAS.

Tropes associated with him include:

  • Accidental Misnaming: He called Piku-chan "Pika-chan" in his initial debut and for a while afterwards; it eventually stopped the more he got to know Piku-chan (and in part due to a mnemonic device and a piece of paper).
  • Action Initiative: Being a Gliscor, he knows Quick Attack, and he has in fact known it ever since he was a Gligar.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Before he met Kim, he was a Gligar who was sadly ostracized, abused, and ultimately abandoned by his original trainer because he couldn't fly or battle well. When he ultimately left him, he told Dio he was insane for thinking he could ever battle well and that he belonged in a Bedlam House. Needless to say, it had quite the effect on him.
  • Apologizes a Lot: Particularly after he loses a battle or does something that he believes is his fault, even when it's not. This is a direct result of the abuse he received at the hands of his old Trainer.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Easily gets distracted by things, and has a bit of a splotchy memory.
  • Bat Out of Hell: Naturally combined with a scorpionfly, given his species. Though the "creepiness" part of the trope is well and truly averted, even as a Gliscor— Dio is hyper, friendly and fun-loving.
  • Battle Cry: WRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY--!!
  • Berserk Button: Abuse, and gaslighting especially. According to him, if he were to meet his old Trainer, he'd drop a steamroller on their head. He was also among the most horrified of Kim's team members upon hearing about Jigsaw's gaslighting and psychological manipulation of Kim.
  • Beware My Stinger Tail: He has one, and uses it, at least sometimes, for Poison Jab.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Dio may be a loud, fun-loving and silly Gliscor who is prone to sticking his tongue out at inopportune times, but don't underestimate his battling prowess, especially under Kim- not only does he know three critical-hit moves and have Poison Heal as an ability, but as of Marnie, he also knows Guillotine. And he's used it. note
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: He knows both X-Scissor and Fury Cutter— though he uses X-Scissor far more often.
  • Blood Knight: Absolutely adores battling, believing it to be not just a way to get stronger, but also as a way of showing he can do his absolute best for Kim and win despite his initial evident flaws.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Despite his love and adoration of battling, he is also a genuinely fun-loving and friendly Gliscor who is highly emotional.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: While he hasn't done it yet in WAAPT, he does do it in his Image Song "Rainbow in the Dark"; see Image Song below.
  • Can't Take Criticism: Downplayed and deconstructed; due to his old Trainer gaslighting him and physically/verbally abusing him for not being able to battle well, Dio often gets very sad and upset whenever he loses, continually blaming himself for his losses. That being said, though, he is overall a Graceful Loser— upon losing to Piku-chan in the New Year's Eve battle, he tearfully congratulates Piku-chan before walking off sadly.
  • Caps Lock: His main typing quirk, and one of two mons (along with Freddie) to have kept their quirk from the beginning before the eventual switchover to everyone getting them a la Homestuck. Speaking of Homestuck, he shares said quirk with Karkat Vantas, though in the beginning his quirk didn't include any punctuation and was initially just him not knowing how a keyboard worked. Goldenheart388, though, thought it fit well with his hyper and boisterous nature, so it was kept.
    • However, she— and he by proxy— are thinking of changing his typing quirk slightly so as to not match Karkat's exactly. The caps lock aspect will be kept, though.
  • Characterization Marches On: Dio was somewhat less loud and exciteable in his first appearance, and was a bit more silly, having a habit of waggling his tongue out of his mouth (as he did when he tried to comfort Freddie, to no avail). While the tongue-waggling stayed, he became far more loud as time went on (and especially after he got the aforementioned typing quirk).
  • Character Tics: Among Dio's habits: wiggling his tongue at people, screaming at the top of his lungs, glomping Kim whenever he wins, and of course... WRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY--!
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: His main text color is pink, a relic from when he was still a Gligar. He's retained it even in evolution, despite his main body color changing from pink to purple.
  • Contemplating Your Hands: Or pincers, rather; the revelation after doing so that his pincers are no longer attached to his wings is Dio's first clue of his evolution (which happened overnight without his knowledge).
  • Critical Hit Class: Knows Stone Edge, Night Slash, and Slash— all three of which are moves with a high critical-hit ratio.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He certainly became this after evolving into Gliscor— despite his silly and fun-loving exterior, as of the League he knows Night Slash, Slash, X-Scissor, Earthquake, and Guillotine. Read: all extremely powerful moves that he will use against you.
  • Cute Little Fangs: He still has these even as a Gliscor.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: And how. Dio was abused- both verbally and physically- by his old Trainer, constantly hit for not being able to battle well, was told he was worthless, was abandoned, got slashed across the face due to his Trainer thinking he was a bad Pokemon (he couldn't speak Monese), and to top it all off, he was gaslit and told that he should be in a Bedlam House. Suffice it to say, he is much happier with Kimberly Bond and carries a lot of baggage as a result of it all. To top it all off, the lyrics of "Good Kid" imply his mother died, too, which only makes it even worse.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Despite his fearsome appearance, Dio is a very friendly and fun-loving Gliscor who loves rock and roll music.
  • Desperately Craves Affection: Dio's main motivation in life— besides making people happy— is to make Kim as proud of him as possible.
  • Didn't Think This Through: He is prone to this quite often, owing to his Rash nature. The most notable example came from him blindly trusting Cof and shaking his hand during the Hoops battle, leading to Cof using Mummy to counteract Dio's Poison Heal ability and ultimately leading to his defeat. To be fair, though, his splotchy memory (he likely forgot about Cof's ability since it has no other real effect than changing the opponent's ability to Mummy) and the fact that he'd never met Cof before in his life meant that it likely wasn't entirely his fault. Of course, Dio doesn't see that.
  • Die or Fly: This is how he's learned Stone Edge, Earthquake, Guillotine, and Poison Jab (in that order, too).
  • Disability Superpower: His ability is Poison Heal, meaning that, in his words:
Dio: ...if I get poisoned, it doesn't deplete my HP! It HEALS it! If Joel uses Toxic on me, it'll be a benefit! I THRIVE ON POISON, BABY! Heck, Poison's the name of a rock band! NO WONDER I LOVE GETTING POISONED SO MUCH!
  • Dishing Out Dirt: He's part Ground-type, and knows Earthquake (though, funnily enough, it's his only Ground-type move— as such, he was very happy when he finally did learn it).
  • Establishing Character Moment: He is introduced immediately— and abruptly— introducing himself to Kim by sticking his tongue out and waggling it at her, before commenting on the "New York, New York" performance that Sinatra had just done and stating that while he liked it, it wasn't his kind of music. He then proceeds to go on about his love of rock and roll— and promptly forgets that Ronnie James Dio exists, while also simultaneously confusing him with the other Dio. All of this instantly helps to set him up as a silly, yet kindhearted Gligar with a love of rock and roll, a bit of a rash streak, and a bit of a splotchy memory and a literal mind.
    • Almost immediately afterwards, his backstory is introduced, and he is eventually revealed as being a major Stepford Smiler.
  • Face of a Thug: Very friendly and affectionate, despite being a Bat Out of Hell.
  • Flight: Is part-Flying type, though it's more akin to gliding. It's only gotten a bit better since he's evolved into a Gliscor, and he much prefers to walk around rather than fly (though part of this might be due to his abuse from his old Trainer).
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Among the first five mons on Kim's team, he's the sanguine— hyperactive, fun-loving, and very, very loud.
  • Friendly Neighborhood Vampire: In direct contrast to one of his two namesakes. Dio is partially based on a vampire bat, given that he's a Gliscor— but the last thing he'd want to do is bite you. He'd rather lick your face instead.
  • Fun Personified: Oh so very much. He serves as the original 5's Plucky Comic Relief, with a desire to make those around him happy.
  • The Glomp: Very much enjoys hugging people, particularly after he's just won something or after something happens to him (i.e. he learns a new move, after his evolution, etc.).
  • Graceful Loser: Despite his Guilt Complex regarding losing battles, he is for the most part this, as even in the midst of his loss-induced misery he will still congratulate the opponent. Later on, he's also been shown to complement their moves
  • Guilt Complex: He has a big one as a direct result of his abusive upbringing. He believes that every loss of his is his fault, and has a bit of a tendency to blame himself for things that go wrong, even if they don't involve him directly.
  • Healing Factor: His Ability is Poison Heal, allowing him to be healed by poison instead of taking damage from it- which he used to great advantage in his battle against Marnie. That being said, though, the battle with Hoops showed that other mons can take advantage of said Poison Heal ability.
  • Heroic BSoD: He falls into this hard after any and all losses in battle. The second time (after the battle against Hoops) was so bad that he broke his typing quirk for the first time in the entire RP, shocking Kaylan and Joel to no end (see O.O.C. Is Serious Business below).
  • Hot-Blooded: Has a bit of a tendency to be this in the heat of battle, but mainly finds them fun and enjoyable.
  • Image Song: Unlike Paul and Sinatra, Dio's English and Japanese character theme songs deal with very different aspects of Dio's personality:
  • Improbable Weapon User: He wants to drop a steamroller on his old Trainer, but otherwise, this is averted.
  • Ironic Name: Dio's name manages to be both this and a Meaningful Name; Dio is named in part after Dio Brando, but can in every regard be considered his namesake's direct Foil.
  • Irony: Dio's Hasslemon handle is holyGlider(HG). Dio has no god complex whatsoever (he's more prone to berating himself).
  • It's All My Fault: See Guilt Complex above; he constantly blames himself whenever he loses, despite overall being a relatively Graceful Loser. This is directly as a result of him being abused and gaslighted by his old Trainer.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Dio's main motivation in life is to make everyone around him as happy as possible— especially his new Trainer.
  • Keet: Dio is highly excitable and extremely loud.
  • Kiai: WRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY—!
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Dio is among the first of Kim's mons to accept the concession of New Dawn's Dreamers. He doesn't get upset about it, either, though no one comments on it in-universe. It's likely justified by the fact that his Trainer chose to concede (it wasn't a forced loss like Pokemon battles are) and the fact that it was a music competition (something that Dio was never involved in with his old Trainer) rather than a Pokemon battle (which he was constantly berated for losing).
  • Large Ham: Hoo-boy. He is almost constantly screaming his head off, has a Caps Lock typing quirk in Hasslemon, and loves rock and metal music to the point where his Hasslemon handle flat-out references an album by one of his namesakes. It's probably easier for us to list the moments where he isn't doing this.
  • Literal-Minded: Dio has a bit of a tendency to be this, which was shown by him initially thinking that the definition of gaslighting was "setting someone on fire with a gas lamp."
  • Make Me Wanna Shout: As a Gliscor, he likely knows Screech, and he definitely is prone to screaming a lot.
  • Maniac Tongue: One of Dio's most prominent character tics involve him waggling his tongue around in a very silly and goofy manner. As a matter of fact, it's the first thing we see him do.
  • Meaningful Name: Dio's name manages to be both this and an Ironic Name. In the "meaningful" camp, Dio's primary namesake is, of course, Ronnie James Dio, who was a Large Ham in his own right as well as someone known for songs discussing fantastic and supernatural elements as well as The Power of Rock. Dio also suffered from depression, and reportedly felt "alone and rejected" upon him leaving Black Sabbath.
    • His secondary namesake even has a few meaningful aspects to him as mentioned above in {{Foil]], being a Large Ham Blood Knight who also had abusive caretakers. There's also the fact that Dio (the Gliscor) is based in part on a vampire bat, and, well...
    • His Hasslemon handle is holyGlider (HG), which makes reference to his namesake's Holy Diver album and more importantly his gliding ability. It doubles as a Punny Name.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: Part vampire bat, part scorpionfly
  • Monochromatic Eyes: Given that he is a Gliscor, he has the trademark yellow eyes of the rest of his species.
  • Mythology Gag: Two things that Dio desperately wants to do are throw steamrollers on people (specifically his old Trainer) and freeze time. You get three guesses as to why and the first two don't count.
  • Named After Someone Famous: In this case, Ronnie James Dio; see Meaningful Name above.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: The In-Between to Paul's Nice and Sinatra's Mean, as while not being as polite and modest as Paul is, he is still a very friendly and fun Pokemon.
  • No Indoor Voice: As mentioned above, Dio is shouting nigh-constantly, to the point where him not doing so is his major O.O.C. Is Serious Business tipoff (which happened after the battles against Ian and especially Hoops).
  • Not Quite Flight: One of the main reasons his old Trainer abandoned him was his inability to fly. Even as a Gliscor, he hasn't been seen gliding all that much, and usually prefers to stay on the ground.
  • One-Hit KO: As of Marnie, he knows Guillotine, though unlike Peechee only uses it as a last resort. (To wit, he's only ever used said move once.)
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Unlike Paul and Sinatra, a moment of this has been seen on screen for Dio— in fact, there have been multiple moments of this on-screen for Dio. His first major moment of this- which was not commented on by anyone in-universe- was him being among the first to accept the concession of New Dawn's Dreamers, without getting upset about the loss like he usually does. To be fair, Kim did choose to concede, so it wasn't forced onto him, and it was a music contest instead of a battle.
    • His true major moment of this, however, happened shortly after the battle against Hoops. Prior to it, Dio had gone up against Hoops' Theivul, Vul, had used Poison Heal to his advantage, and damaged him enough to consider him fainted. Shortly afterwards, he is introduced to Hoops' Cofagrigus, Cof, who greets him with so much charisma that Dio falls for it immediately, shakes his hand... and gets Mummy put on him, instantly negating his ability. Cof then throws him directly in the crossfire of his friends' attacks and tells him he still has a lot to learn about battling and the melee. Despite him evidently being right, Dio's Guilt Complex naturally sinks in. When he inevitably faints a few seconds later and is returned to his PokeBall, he is so shaken up about it that he breaks his typing quirk for the first time in the entire RP and talks in regular caps. Kaylan and Joel, who he's currently talking to, can react only with Stunned Silence, and it is soon lampshaded:
      Kaylan (ML): I'd assume s[]... b-but s[]mething seems different fr[]m last time.
Joel (IA): yeah, i don't think i've ever seen him this upset 8efore.
    • The moment is also lampshaded by Dio directly on his SDP:
Dio: It hurt so much that, when Joel and Kaylan decided to talk to me about it, I dropped my typing quirk. I don't remember ever typing not in all-caps... except for right now, of course. And if I'm talking to a stranger, but that hasn't happened yet. Certainly not to my friends, though— and that shocked Kaylan and Joel to no end. And honestly, I wouldn't blame them. If you see me typing regularly, and the person on the other side is someone I know, something is up. Big time.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: Given that he's a Gliscor, he has multiple vampiric traits, which is part of the reason why Kim named him after Dio Brando as well as Ronnie James Dio.
  • Out of Focus: Averted; among the first five mons he and Geddy have the most screen time and development.
  • Parental Abandonment: His backstory culminates in his old Trainer abandoning him on the side of the road to die and telling him he belongs in a Bedlam House. It's worse than it sounds.
  • Personality Swap: Switches with Geddy on April Fools' Day 2021.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: Serves this role among the first five mons, along with him being The Lancer to Paul's leadership role.
  • Poisonous Person: While not a Poison type himself (he's Ground/Flying), he does know Poison Jab as of Hoops. His ability is also Poison Heal, which allows him to get healed from being poisoned.
  • The Power of Rock: Dio is a firm believer in this and a major fan of rock and metal music.
  • Power Up Let Down: Every time his Guillotine doesn't hit serves as an example of this.
  • Prehensile Tail: Downplayed— while he does have this due to being a Gliscor, he doesn't really enjoy actually using it, instead preferring to use his pincers instead.
  • Punny Name: His Hasslemon handle, holyGlider (HG).
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red Oni to the entire rest of the O5's Blue Oni (yes, even Sinatra). Dio is a loud and exciteable Large Ham; the other four members of the team are, respectively, a kindhearted Mellow Fellow (Paul), a Deadpan Snarker (Sinatra), a Shrinking Violet with Big Eater tendencies (Kaylan), and the group's resident caretaker as well as the most modest member of the O5 (Geddy).
  • Rock is Authentic, Pop is Shallow: Well and truly averted. Dio may like rock music more than any other kind, but he doesn't deem it as being more or less authentic than any other genre of music. If his Japanese character theme is any indication, he's actually into poppier-sounding music.
  • Scars Are Forever: Dio's trademark identifier is a scar running through his right eye; he received it due to being slashed across the face with a knife by his old Trainer.
  • Scary Scorpions: Very much averted— despite looking like one, the scariest Dio tends to get is Epic Rocking like there's no tomorrow. He's very fun-loving and surprisingly adorable and sensitive.
  • Significant Birth Date: He shares his birthday, July 10th, with his primary namesake. This trait is shared with every member of Kim's team save for Orwell, Peechee, and Boseman.
  • Something Only They Would Say: More subtle than the previous examples, but the lines "Boy, life sure has been interesting since I met you! It definitely was for the best" served to break the Elton-Dio tossup (barring the distinct lack of a Cockney accent)— given the past that Dio had prior to meeting Kim, having a new Trainer that is decidedly not abusive has definitely been better for him. Indeed, Dio has mentioned many times prior just how happy having Kim around makes him— and how happy he wants to make Kim. Elton, by contrast (the only mon of the mons present in the first BOB game that would actively get that excited), had a good life— and Freddie— prior to meeting Kim; actually being caught by her was just icing on the cake rather than something that actively changed his life for the better.
  • Stepford Smiler: Despite being far happier around Kim than his old Trainer, he has a tendency to hide any sadness he feels with happiness (unless he loses, in which case his Guilt Complex takes over). This is in part directly as a result of his old Trainer's abuse and in part out of a desire to make- and see- Kim as happy as possible.
  • Tarot Motifs: According to Goldenheart388, his associated Tarot card is The Fool, representing his impulsiveness, optimism, general lust for life, and also his Broken Bird tendencies as a result of him having lived under an abusive Trainer before being caught by Kim.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Big time under Kim's tenure, and more specifically after learning his favorite move, Dark Pulse, from Theta. It happened even more during the battle against Ian on New Year's Day, during which he learned both Stone Edge and Earthquake, with the latter being his first Ground-type move.
  • Transformation Sequence: Evolved into a Gliscor after being given a Razor Fang in his sleep and cuddling with it, thinking it was a stuffed animal. He doesn't realize he's evolved intil he wakes up and is given a mirror, and when he does find out what has happened to him... you should know what happens next. note
  • Unconventional Formatting: His Hasslemon typing quirk, as previously stated, is Caps Lock pink text. He used to not use punctuation, but now carries the exact same typing quirk as Karkat Vantas, with the caveat that, if he gets excited, he uses multiple exclamation points.
  • Victorious Roar: WRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY--!!
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: As a direct result of his abusive upbringing, he has a desire to make Kim proud of him, and falters whenever he thinks he hasn't. This has led directly to a Guilt Complex and a slew of other psychological issues.

    Kaylan

Kaylan (Turtwig -> Grotle)

Kim's shy yet gluttonous Grotle, and one of Kim's more relaxed Pokemon. For the most part, he is kindhearted and patient, and prefers to take things as slowly as possible. He doesn't like seeing other mons get hurt and will usually try to help them. That being said, though, he is an absolute beast in the heat of battle. Oh, and make sure you have marshmallows at the ready for him.

He has n[]rmal punctuati[]n and capitalizati[]n, but replaces all O's with d[]ubled brackets.
 Said brackets are supp[]sed t[] resemble marshmall[]ws— his fav[]rite f[][]d. He als[] has a tendency t[] use elipses whenever he's particularly nerv[]us... alth[]ugh it's n[]t as bad as Freddie.

Tropes associated with him include:

  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: He has a tendency (even as a Grotle) to bite peoplemons' heads whenever he is excited. This most prominently happens towards his Trainer (naturally). As a human, it's replaced with hair tousling according to Word of God.
  • Afraid of Blood: A fear he shares with Freddie, Orwell, and- more notably- his own Trainer.
  • AM/FM Characterization: Kaylan's favorite genres of music are gulf and western, soft rock, surf (particularly vocal surf), and folk rock— all of which are befitting of his patient, carefree lifestyle (to the point where his character theme is even about said carefree lifestyle).
  • Apologizes a Lot: Though not to the extent of Freddie, he still has a tendency to do this.
  • Attack Backfire: Throw an Ice-type move at Kaylan? He'll either eat the ice or take the attack and then use Iron Tail on you. Throw a Fire-type move at Kaylan? Impromptu flamethrower back in your face. Or he'll Earth Power you. Throw a Flying-type at him? He'll Stealth Rock you. The only weakness of his that he can't directly counter is Bug.
  • Attack the Tail: One of Kaylan's main battle strategies due to him being a Mighty Glacier.
  • Balance, Speed, Strength Trio: Among the three Rowan starters, he's the Strength to Hanuman's Speed and Ritchie's Balance.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: As shown during his battle against Melony's Lapras. Kaylan is a kindhearted and Gentle Giant, but that doesn't mean it would be a good idea at all to cross him.
  • Berserk Button: God help you if you happen to hurt Kaylan's friends or Trainer— particularly if you hurt Dalt or Ringo, as those two are his closest companions on the team.
    • On a more lighthearted note- and as his debut showed- don't burn his mouth or interrupt his daydreams about marshmallows. Even if he thinks you are one.
  • Big Eater: There's a reason his Characteristic is "loves to eat". Most commonly, he'll be seen eating junk food— and especially marshmallows— and the torture test that Jigsaw gave to him planned to take advantage of this before it was stopped midway through by Braker and Caboose.
  • Big, Thin, Short Trio: Forms this with Dalt and Ringo (er, Tommy and Pepper) amongst the Rebels, and decidedly forms this with them when they're in their Pokemon forms due to Ringo being the size of a Pikachu.
  • Breaking Old Trends: He is Kim's first mon:
    • To be obtained from a regional professor (in this case, Rowan).
    • To have been written by someone else besides Goldenheart388 in their debut (in his case, it was Ian; see also Characterization Marches On below).
    • To not have his namesake (Howard Kaylan) match up with his favorite artist (Jimmy Buffett) or his favorite genre of music (though this is downplayed, as Kaylan does enjoy soft rock and folk rock).
    • To change his English character theme midway through (it was "Happy Together" by the Turtles at first).
    • To not have his (current) English character theme match up with the artist he was named after ("Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes" is a Jimmy Buffett song, not a Turtles song).
    • To have his favorite move be a tie (between Protect and Leech Seed, in his case).
    • To be a "traditional" starter Pokemon.
  • Catch and Return: One of Kaylan's main battle strategies, particularly done when dealing with opponents with supereffective moves (if he doesn't counter them, that is). He spits ice back in the opponent's face, throws birdmons across the room, and so on and so forth.
  • Characterization Marches On: Kaylan, interestingly enough, has two seperate moments of this. The first time was immediately after Goldenheart388 took over for writing him from Ian, which established much of his general personality (namely his love of marshmallows and his Big Eater tendencies). The second moment was during the performance of "Don't Look Back in Anger" for the Battle of the Bands, during which his shyness became apparent; he's stayed more or less the same ever since.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: His text coloration is forest-green (likely done to distinguish him from Paul's green text).
  • The Cover Changes the Meaning: Suffice it to say, that's not actual rum Kaylan's drinking in "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes." Nor is it red wine, either.
  • Critical Hit Class: Knows Razor Leaf, which has a high critical-hit ratio.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: While not Ground-type himself due to not evolving past his Grotle stage, he does know Earth Power via egg move.
  • Energy Absorption: He knows Absorb and Leech Seed, the latter of which is one of his favorite moves. He has used it to great effect during multiple battles, most notably the battles against Nessa, Marnie, and Kommo-o.
  • Energy Ball: As of the League, he knows the move according to Word of God, even though he has yet to use it on screen.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The first thing we see Kaylan tell Paul under Goldenheart388's writing style is that the fight that occurred in Rowan's lab happened due to him dozing off, daydreaming about marshmallows, and subsequently biting Chimchar's fire tail due to him thinking that said dream was real. He soon apologizes to the Chimchar (later named Hanuman). All of this sets him up instantly as a kindhearted, lax, and gluttonous Pokemon— and shows the fight that had happened before as a very literal case of O.O.C. Is Serious Business (since Ian, not Goldenheart, was writing for him).
  • Extraoredinary: Knows Iron Tail and Heavy Slam, and uses both of them to full advantage in battles against Ice-type Pokemon.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Slightly downplayed, but Kaylan's main battle strategies do consist of him eating ice and fire— things that would normally be enough to faint him.
  • Fat and Skinny: He forms this dynamic with Dalt, though his human form is merely a bit chubby rather than outright overweight/obese.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Among Kim's first five mons, he's the Melancholic— a bashful and insecure yet polite and friendly slowpoke and Big Eater. That being said, he just barely qualifies for this, with it being more accurate to place him on the Melancholic-Phlegmatic edge. If not for Geddy, there's a good chance he would be phlegmatic instead.
  • Gentle Giant: Full-stop, despite not being fully-evolved yet. Despite his appearance, Kaylan is nothing if not kindhearted, patient, and lax— heck, Gentle is straight-up his nature.
  • Green Thumb: He's a Grass-type Pokemon, and as of the League knows Absorb, Razor Leaf, Leech Seed, Leaf Storm, Synthesis, and Energy Ball.
  • Healing Factor: Knows Leech Seed and Synthesis.
  • Helium Speech: Kaylan has an unusually high-pitched and soft-sounding voice that is often compared to this. Said voice not projecting well enough for anyone to hear served as the main reason behind his nervousness towards his "Don't Look Back in Anger" performance in the Battle of the Bands.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: His friendship with Dalt— and their Riolu Rebels partnership— leans itself to this, despite the fact that Dalt isn't in his Pokemon form as a Rebels member.
  • Heroes "R" Us: Serves as a member of the Riolu Rebels under the name "Testudyne" alongside Dalt (Whizzard) and Ringo (Sun King).
  • Heroic Resolve: Got this during his battle against Nessa upon seeing the then-Yamper Dalt stand up for him against Nessa's Golisopod in the wake of him nearly fainting. Seeing Dalt's Undying Loyalty towards him— and Nessa's Golisopod immediately try to go for him again— allowed Kaylan to gain a Heroic Second Wind and ultimately evolve into a Grotle— at the same time that Dalt evolved into a Boltund.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Being the meek Grotle he is, Kaylan has a bit of a tendency to do this. He has said multiple times that he's not as good at comforting people and Pokemon as Geddy is, and has underestimated his singing skills multiple times.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite his nervousness at initially wanting to go out on the stage, Kaylan is a pretty good singer— and for the record, an even better drummer, as he is the drummer of New Dawn's Dreamers in the Battle of the Bands.
    • Additionally, he is quite perceptive of his friends' emotions (even if, by his own admission, he's not as good at it as Geddy is). He immediately noticed that something was up with Dio after the Hoops battle the moment he saw Dio talking in nothing but elipses, and his suspicions were instantly confirmed when Dio's next message was written with normal capitalization. Afterwards, he didn't hesitate to ask Dio what was wrong, and knew immediately that he had lost against... someone (he didn't know exactly who it was at the time).
  • HP to 1: Was the victim of this (more or less) during the battle against Nessa, ultimately leading to the aforementioned moment of Heroic Resolve.
  • Humble Hero: Among the original 5- and Kim's team in general- Kaylan is probably third only to Paul and Geddy in terms of his humility. He is a bit shy, doesn't really enjoy conflict or being the center of attention, got nervous upon being asked to perform "Don't Look Back in Anger", and found himself caught in the middle upon witnessing the "Freaky Friday" Flip on April Fools' Day of 2021 (Word of God states that, had John, George, and Ringo been caught at the time, Kaylan would have switched personalities with Dalt).
  • Iconic Outfit: His human form is best identified by his yellow baseball cap and his dark green camo jacket. As Testudyne, he's switched out the baseball cap for a green bandana, and also wears green goggles, a dark-green camo patterned shirt and pants, a yellow cape, steel brass knuckles with spikes on them, and his trademark green and yellow shield.
  • Image Song: Currently, Kaylan's English character theme (non-Broadway) is "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes" by Jimmy Buffett, making him the only member of Kim's team named after a musician to not have his character theme also be by said musician (or the band that the musician is from). Originally, it was— it was "Happy Together" by the Turtles note  initially— but the song was changed midway through due to Goldenheart388 realizing that the song in question was about unrequited love. While the subject matter is befitting of Kaylan's humble personality, she ultimately didn't find it fitting enough for Kaylan to be considered a true image song. "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes," on the other hand, is about relaxing vacations, daydreaming of the ocean, food, and drink, and ultimately the idea that, the farther you go, the nicer people are— hence you wanting to get away from it all. For someone as laidback and relaxed as Kaylan— who doesn't like watching people fight and would much rather take life as it comes— the sentiment is perfectly fitting.
    • Not to mention these lyrics:
I didn't ponder the question too long
    • In terms of Broadway, meanwhile, his character theme is "Waving Through a Window" from Dear Evan Hansen (in part because "Changes in Latitudes" is part of a medley in Escape to Margaritaville). That song is far more explicit in terms of what's it about— it relates back to Kaylan's general nervousness and him being a Humble Hero and Shrinking Violet. According to both Goldenheart388 and Kaylan himself, though, there's likely a better Broadway song out there for him (though of course that might be Kaylan's Heroic Self-Deprecation talking).
    • His Japanese character theme, meanwhile, is "Answer" by BUMP OF CHICKEN, the opening to March Comes in Like a Lion. The song deals with Kaylan's desire to prove himself to other people and Pokemon, get over his Heroic Self-Deprecation, and to not see people and Pokemon get hurt as much, along with delving more into his patient and kindhearted nature. note
  • Impossibly Cool Weapon: Besides his shield, Testudyne (as his name implies) works with explosives— though, befitting his nature, they're the kind of explosives that would shoot things like glitter or shaving cream onto the enemies rather than actual shrapnel.
  • Is It Something You Eat?: Given that Kaylan is a bit of a Big Eater, he's sometimes prone to doing this, though not as often as he'd have you believe.
  • Is This Thing On?: The first thing he says in his "Don't Look Back in Anger" performance in the Battle of the Bands.
  • Kill It with Fire: Naturally, due to Kaylan's Grass-typing, he's weak to Fire.
  • Kill It with Ice: And Ice, for that matter, though he can more easily counter it with Iron Tail or Heavy Slam (the former much moreso).
  • Kindhearted Simpleton: While not necessarily stupid, Kaylan has a tendency to be a bit distracted by food (as his first appearance showed). Despite this, though, he is very kindhearted and has a Gentle nature.
  • Last Ditch Move: Very often, it's either Iron Tail or Leaf Storm, with the latter being Kaylan's most powerful move.
  • Lead Drummer: In New Dawn's Dreamers, as a Mythology Gag to the drum-playing Turtwig in the Diamond and Pearl anime. He's still got it as a Grotle, too.
  • Marshmallow Dream: This is Kaylan's Establishing Character Moment— he has a very literal example of this and ends up biting Hanuman's tail in the process, leading to the fight that subsequently occurs.
  • Meaningful Name: Kaylan was named after Howard Kaylan, who was the lead singer of the Turtles. His hero form, Testudyne, is a combination of "testudines" (the order that tortoises are in) and "dynamite", referencing his non-lethal grenades.
    • While his actual name is a Stealth Pun for diehard music fans, his Hasslemon handle is painfully obvious— it's marshmallowLover (ML). Kaylan himself has lampshaded just how obvious it is, and Goldenheart388 is currently debating on whether or not to change it.
  • Mighty Glacier: Kaylan's main role among Kim's team— he makes up for his slow speed and heavier body after evolution by being an absolute tank, and is even able to take Ice-type moves (though not without taking some damage himself).
  • Named After Somebody Famous: In this case, Howard Kaylan of the Turtles; see Meaningful Name above.
  • Nervous Tics: Kaylan tends to shuffle his foot around whenever he is particularly nervous.
  • Nice Guy: Among the nicest, along with Paul and Geddy, of the original 5.
  • Non-Lethal Warfare: Testudyne carries around non-lethal grenades that he uses against his opponents in battle. The vast majority of them are glitter bombs, but some of the "grenades" contain chocolate or— fittingly— marshmallow cream.
  • Not Allowed to Grow Up: Past his Grotle stage, that is; while he hasn't explicitly stated a desire to not evolve into a Torterra yet, Goldenheart388 has stated that she has no plans to evolve him anytime soon. As such, he's the only mon on Kim's team (as of Ringo's evolution) to not be in his final form.
  • Obsessed with Food: And marshmallows in particular, if his Hasslemon handle is any indication. His Establishing Character Moment has him getting distracted in the midst of a literal Marshmallow Dream, and he mistook "Jambi" for "jambalaya" in his SDP on the wiki.
  • Odd Friendship: With Dalt the Boltund.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: In an interesting case, this was how Kaylan was introduced— literally, even, as Ian was writing for Kaylan at the time, rather than Goldenheart388. Technically the first thing we see Kaylan do on screen is get into an argument with Hanuman, stating that he won't be holding back until Hanuman apologizes for burning his mouth. Considering the fact that Kaylan is normally a Shrinking Violet and a Technical Pacifist, it showed just how dire the situation was for Rowan and everybody else involved. Thankfully, however, once Paul steps in, Kaylan apologizes for the misunderstanding, and we get to see how Kaylan is actually like.
    • Aside from that, however, Kaylan's biggest indicator of this, according to Goldenheart388, is if he ever refuses his Trademark Favorite Food (marshmallows) for any reason. It hasn't happened to him on screen yet, but according to Goldenheart, it will. There's also the obvious text indicator of Kaylan's typing quirk being dropped.
    • Additionally, if Kaylan— normally among the most patient members of Kimberly Bond's team— starts acting hastily and/or irrationally for any reason, there's a pretty good chance that something is up.
  • Out of Focus: While he did start getting screentime when the Rebels kicked off, Kaylan's still relatively out of focus compared to the rest of Kim's team. Originally, he was going to be a lot more in focus, as Grotle was Goldenheart388's favorite Pokemon at the time— and then Galvantula and Rush bias took over.
  • Petal Power: He knows Leaf Storm, and it's his strongest move.
  • Performance Anxiety: Famously, he got this during the Battle of the Bands, just before his performance of "Don't Look Back in Anger". It's been implied that performance anxiety from having to sing on stage to thousands of people is a bit of a recurring problem for him.
  • Personality Swap: He was the only one not affected by this when it hit the rest of the team on April Fools' Day (as there were an odd number of team members at the time), and as such was relatively freaked out when everyone suddenly started acting like each other.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue Oni to Dio's Red Oni, along with Geddy.
  • Running on All Fours: Naturally, given that Kaylan's already a quadruped to begin with due to him being a Grotle.
  • Shrinking Violet: Kaylan's second-largest personality trait. He has a bit of a tendency to get nervous about some things, and has a bit of performance anxiety regarding singing. That being said, though, he's far more confident in himself and his abilities than a mon like Freddie is.
  • Shy Shelled Animal: Kaylan is a Grotle, and as such is a bit of an awkward Shrinking Violet. While he does know Withdraw, his larger size means that he can't retract into his shell as well as he could have had when he was a Turtwig.
  • Significant Birthdate: He shares his birthday, June 22nd, with his namesake Howard Kaylan. This pattern continues for all of Kim's mons save for Orwell, Peechee, and Boseman.
  • Something Only They Would Say: "Thanks again for helping calm tensions" was the line that ultimately gave Kaylan away during Kim's Bond or Break game with him, as it directly references his debut and specifically Paul stepping in to stop the fight in Rowan's lab from breaking out any further.
  • Starter Mon: He's Kim's first "traditional" starter Pokemon, and came straight from Rowan's lab.
  • Sturdy and Steady Turtles: Kaylan is a Grotle, and as such is among the most patient members of Kimberly Bond's team, coming third behind only Paul and Geddy. He usually likes to take things as slowly as possible and will help others whenever needed— he was notably much more patient than Dalt was regarding the infamous Japanese wa/ga particle divide.
  • Tarot Motifs: According to Goldenheart388, Kaylan's associated Tarot card is Temperance, which represents his patient nature and his ability to find peace of mind.
  • Technical Pacifist: Kaylan doesn't want to kill you, but he is far from a pushover when it comes to battles. Even if he'd much rather not have everyone fighting all the time.
  • Those Two Guys: He and Dalt are seen moreso than he and pretty much any other pairing.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Marshmallows, to the point where it's part of his Hasslemon handle. He's so obsessed with them that his biggest indicator of O.O.C. Is Serious Business is him refusing one outright for whatever reason.
  • Transformation Sequence: He evolved, along with Dalt, during the Hulbury Gym Battle in a Heroic Second Wind.
  • Unconventional Formatting: His typing quirk in Hasslemon involves forest-green text, with double brackets ([]) replacing every instance of the letter O. According to Goldenheart388, the double brackets are supposed to represent a marshmallow— Kaylan's Trademark Favorite Food. He also has a slight tendency to use elipses, but definitely not as much as his fellow mon Freddie does.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Kaylan is a Grotle... and sounds like Greg Ayres as Koda Kouji in My Hero Academia. Read: Helium Speech out the wazoo and an extremely high-pitched voice. The jury's still out on whether or not he'll evolve past his Grotle stage, but according to Goldenheart388, if she ends up evolving him into Torterra, he'll keep the same voice, meaning even more of this trope will be abound.

     Geddy

Geddy (Popplio -> Brionne -> Primarina)

Kim's kindhearted and exceedingly modest Primarina who serves as the group's main caretaker. He has a love of RUSH and Dream Theatre, but not to the point of obsession, and is always there to help one of the other teammates on Kim's team— especially the easily panicked Freddie. He also has a love of singing, and despite his cute looks has an extremely powerful voice that easily matches his namesake's... though, of course, he won't admit how powerful it is in a million years.

(Encases his text in parenthesis and ends it off with a less-than sign, to have it resemble a fish.)<
(Other than that, though, there are no major punctuation or capitalization changes, and Geddy's typing quirk is among the least extensive of all of Kim's mons, befitting his modesty.)<

Tropes associated with him include:

  • Action Initiative: Geddy knows both Baby-Doll Eyes and Aqua Jet, the latter of which he was taught directly by Oshawittle in preparation for his battle in Motostoke.
  • Afraid of Their Own Strength: Not as much as someone like Freddie is, but Geddy is still very much this, to the point where he doesn't prefer to use physical moves (though he will use them if necessary) and instead relies on his singing voice to put the opponent to sleep.
  • A Friend in Need: Geddy is a very kindhearted Pokemon who will always be there to help someone whenever they need it. Most notably, he comforted Freddie from multiple panic attacks, helped to cheer Orwell up about his evolution into a Dark-type Pokemon, and helped Hoops in the aftermath of them having a panic attack in the Motostoke Gym Battle- twice.
  • Agent Peacock: Geddy, as a male Primarina, is a textbook example of Dude Looks Like a Lady (even in his human form). That doesn't mean that he isn't capable of absolutely killing it in battle, though— after Motostoke, when he decided to end up learning physical moves, he's become a (albiet fragile) powerhouse. Even in terms of his status moves, he knows Sing— and is able to match his namesake in terms of raw power.
  • All-Loving Hero: Very kindhearted towards just about everyone, with the main exception of Jigsaw.
  • Anguished Outburst: Famously, Geddy has this upon hearing about Neil Peart's death from cancer, in which he rants about how unfair it is that Peart had to die before ever getting to experience his retirement and after the major Trauma Conga Line that he himself experienced, as was outlined in his book Ghost Rider. As Geddy is normally extremely patient and soft-spoken, the moment catches everyone off-guard— most of all when he releases a Precision F-Strike:
Geddy: (screaming and in tears) <No, it isn't! Nothing about this is okay! First of all, one of my idols is apparently gone, and in the cruelest manner possible! Why did it have to be cancer?! OF ALL THINGS! IT HAD TO BE CANCER! He had retired! He was going to have a life and a family... AND HE WAS DENIED THE CHANCE TO HAVE EITHER OF THOSE THINGS!>
    Kim: (shocked) Geddy...
Geddy: <So don't try to tell me that everything is okay when it clearly isn't!>
    Kaylan: Geddy...
Geddy: (enraged) <What?! What are you going to tell me, Kaylan? That it's fine that Peart got brain cancer and died?! BECAUSE IT ISN'T! HE HAD A FAMILY, KAYLAN! HE HAD A WIFE AND A DAUGHTER AND THEY MUST BE ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATED RIGHT NOW BECAUSE OF WHAT HAPPENED! NONE OF IT IS FAIR! NONE OF IT IS FUCKING FAIR!>
  • Apologetic Attacker: Naturally, given that Geddy is an extreme Nice Guy. It's especially apparent prior to Motostoke, though after evolving into a Primarina it's still somewhat present.
  • Apologizes a Lot: Though not to the extent of Kaylan or Dio and definitely not to the extent of Freddie.
  • Arc Number: You get one guess.
  • Armor-Piercing Attack: Geddy's Sparkling Aria, which is usually (if not always) his finishing move and last resort attack in battles. It is able to strike opponents that are hiding behind a Substitute.
  • Badass Adorable: Among one of the cutest mons on all of Kimberly Bond's team, and yet, as of the League, knows Iron Tail, Sparkling Aria, Calm Mind, Stored Power, Ice Beam, Draining Kiss, Moonlight, and an extremely powerful singing voice that has only ever failed twice.
  • Barbarian Longhair: This is what Geddy's long, feminine flowing hair is usually interpreted (and sometimes depicted) as. It is in stark contrast to his adorable and sweet personality.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: As a Primarina, Geddy is certainly among the more pretty members of Kimberly Bond's team, and a very kindhearted Pokemon as well.
  • Berserk Button: As Kendall's Sylveon effectively learns the hard way during her battle against him in the League, don't hurt one of Geddy's friends or his Trainer under any circumstances, as it is more or less the only thing (other than unfair death or suffering) that will make the normally extremely patient Geddy snap.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: See above. If you somehow make to make the perpetual Nice Guy Geddy angry at you (or, as his reaction to Neil Peart's death showed, even if it wasn't necessarily your fault), you will see just how scary he can be.
  • Blue Is Calm: Geddy is a blue-haired Primarina with blue-colored text, and is an extremely calm and patient individual who rarely gets into fights.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Geddy is a blue-haired Water-type with blue-colored text, and is on a J-Teamer's team.
  • Call-and-Response Song: "Sound and fury drown my heart, every nerve is..." note
  • Careful with That Axe: His "Growl" is a Geddy Lee-esque Metal Scream and his singing voice is extremely powerful, being practically on the level of his namesake's. And then, of course, there's the aforementioned Call-and-Response Song that is the last line of "Cygnus X-1" that has become his standard whenever he performs a Sparkling Aria attack. The audience goes nuts for it.
  • The Caretaker: Geddy's main role amongst the team— if there is someone who is in need of help, he will come through for them no matter what happens. He especially serves as this towards the easily-panicked and nervous Freddie, often comforting him with a Cooldown Hug and Rush's "Rivendell". The first time he did it, Kim was almost moved to tears. He also serves as the group's main cleric, and knows Life Dew as an Egg move.
  • Character Development: Post-Motostoke and especially post-his evolution into a Primarina, Geddy is far more confident and willing to attack an opponent with actual moves, as opposed to just status-inducing ones (Sing, Growl, and Protect) as in his debut and when battling Ozzy. That being said, though, [[Martial Pacifist he still almost always uses special and status moves in battle, only knowing a few physical moves (among them Aqua Jet, Ice Beam, and Dive).
  • Character Tics: He is prone to blushing whenever he receives any praise or is particularly embarrassed by something.
  • Color-Coded Characters: Mainly associated with the colors blue (because water-type) and red (due to that being the main color associated with Rush and also the color of his Cool Shades).
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: His main text color is blue.
  • Cooldown Hug: Geddy gives these a lot, more often than not to Freddie, but sometimes to other mons (most notably Orwell) and even to his own Trainer. According to Freddie himself, they have helped immensely.
  • Cool Shades: Geddy has worn a pair of red-lensed round glasses since Motostoke as his trademark item, after helping to comfort Hoops from a panic attack after they saw a Centiskorch during Ian and Evelyn's battle against Kabu. Naturally, they're a direct reference to his namesake, and for the record, they are not Choice Specs— just regular glasses.
  • Confusion Fu: Geddy, as a Primarina, has 126 base Special Attack and knows Calm Mind, Stored Power, Psychic, Iron Tail, Ice Beam, and Shadow Ball as of the League.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Naturally, given his species.
  • The Cutie: Along with Elton and Ringo, Geddy is among the cutest members of Kimberly Bond's team even in spite of being fully-evolved. His Fairy-typing does not hurt matters.
  • Despair Event Horizon: He hits this hard upon hearing about the death of Neil Peart and the subsequent breakup of his favorite band. It gets so bad that the others have to set out to try and find him due to him running away from the Wild Area.
  • The Ditherer: While not to the same extent as someone like Cuddles, Geddy still has a bit of a difficult time making decisions about things due to his Nice Guy persona.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: This is, both in and out of universe, the main reason Geddy was named Geddy— according to Goldenheart388, she associated Geddy Lee with male Primarina due to the fact that Geddy Lee circa 1972 was often subject to gender confusion due to his long hair and high-pitched voice. Similarly, Primarina, a very feminine-looking Pokemon on the surface, is 87.5% male.
  • '80s Hair: Along with Barbarian Longhair, this is what his long, flowing hairstyle is usually translated as, both in his Primarina form and his human form.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Like all of Kimberly Bond's Pokemon, Geddy has one of these, but fittingly enough for his nature, it's extremely low-key, only consisting of him going nuts when one of Kim's team members mentions that they've never heard of Dream Theatre in their lives. For all intents and purposes, his real moment of this comes after the wedding of Umbra and Ammy, when he successfully comforts Freddie in the midst of a crying fit by giving him a Cooldown Hug and singing "Rivendell" to him. After the subsequent singing makes everyone except for Freddie fall asleep, Geddy immediately blushes and apologizes, establishing his kindhearted, sensitive, and humble nature further. Funnily enough, that moment is later followed up by one of the most out-of-character moments for Geddy in the entire RP.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones: In this case, as with all of the members of Kim's team, it's Jigsaw.
  • Five Stages of Grief: In the wake of finding out about Neil Peart's death, Geddy goes through 4 of the five (3 onscreen and 1 offscreen). Bargaining is the only one skipped over.
    • Denial: As soon as Geddy finds out about Neil Peart's death, he immediately starts going into denial about it, saying that there's no way that it can be true because A) no one knew about it at all due to how private Peart was and 2) Peart had plans for a happy retirement with his wife and family, and after the tragedies he had experienced in the past, it wouldn't be fair for him to be ripped away of all of that in such a cruel manner. Once Kim tells him that sadly, yes, Peart is dead, Geddy goes into a bit of a Heroic BSoD, and is initially only able to stand there in tears and shake his head "no" in shock.
    • Anger: ...followed by him absolutely letting it all loose in one of the biggest O.O.C. Is Serious Business moments among Goldenheart388's contributions to the RP. He snaps that him finding out about Neil Peart's death is far from okay, and proceeds to go on a Rage Against the Heavens, stating how unfair it was for Peart to die at such a young age after everything he'd been through and due to him having a wife and daughter who clearly loved him very much. It culminates, of course, in a very unexpected Precision F-Strike that sends everyone there into shock and causes Geddy to leave the scene.
    • Depression: Everything that happens afterwards— Geddy runs away to grieve the death of Neil Peart, sobs his heart out, and doesn't get any better until he meets the Quagsire that will eventually be caught and named Joel.
    • Acceptance: This is the stage that happens offscreen. It's only implied in-universe so far by Geddy not bringing up Peart's death after it happens, but his SDP flat-out confirms it:
Geddy: Besides, it's been a year. I've pretty much gotten over the death anyways.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Of Kim's first five mons, he's the Phlegmatic— modest, kindhearted, sensitive, and willing to help people out whenever he can.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: He switches personalities with Geddy on April Fools Day 2021.
  • Friend to All Children: Geddy takes particularly kindly to first-stage Pokemon, especially ones that he finds to be cute. Most notably, he comforted Freddie a lot when he was a Sobble, and even as a Drizzile (especially when the latter started to become very finicky about his appearance and paranoid of his ectrodactyly).
  • Gag Nose: Geddy had this as a Popplio.
  • Guile Hero: If he's not directly fighting with the use of Sparkling Aria or any fairy magic, Geddy's number-one strategy in battle is to put his opponents to sleep via the use of Sing.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Geddy had these as a Brionne.
  • Grief Song: While it's not sung by Geddy himself (though it is sung by his namesake), Rush's "Halo Effect" plays in the background in the midst of the "Depression" stage when Geddy goes through the Five Stages of Grief regarding Neil Peart's death.
  • The Heart: He plays this role amongst the original five members, serving as the group's caretaker and generally being a very kindhearted individual. He often will heal his allies' wounds with Life Dew, and very much enjoys comforting mons in the midst of panic attacks. Even in the heat of battle, while he's overall fine now with battling opponents, that doesn't mean he enjoys seeing them get hurt.
  • Healing Shiv: He knows Sparkling Aria, which heals any burns that the opponent has in addition to being a generally powerful attack. Probably the only time that the "sound and fury drown my heart" line does not apply.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Given his unassuming nature, Geddy does this almost all the time. He claims flat-out on his SDP that he feels that he is not as humble or as kindhearted as either Ian or his namesake.
  • Hidden Depths: Geddy's favorite band after the obvious two? Coheed and Cambria. Who, yes, are also a progressive rock band... but who have very different lyrical themes compared to the other two, if "Welcome Home" is any indication. The Bond or Break game also reveals that his favorite song that isn't by the aforementioned two bands is "The Night Chicago Died" by Paper Lace... which is a song about Al Capone laying waste to the city of Chicago and killing police officers, implying that despite his Martial Pacifist behavior, Geddy has a bit of a Nightmare Fetishist side to him.
    • Additionally, looking at Geddy, you probably would not be able to guess that his singing voice would fit well in a metal or prog rock band. Even if you do happen to know who he was named after.
    • According to Goldenheart388, Geddy's Nightmare Fetishist side continues. He's a massive fan of book-reading, and particularly enjoys the poems and novels of Edgar Allan Poe. Additionally, while not a fan of baseball like his namesake, Geddy is a fan of golf— which makes sense, given that he's from Alola, who has the golfer Kahili as an Elite Four member.
  • Humble Hero: There is a very good reason he has a Modest nature (besides the obvious competitive benefits). Geddy is sweet, extremely humble, polite, and unassuming, to the point where according to Goldenheart388, if WAAPT ever got translated into Japanese, Geddy would speak in keigo, due to his personality being basically equal to the male version of a Yamato Nadeshiko. note
  • An Ice Person: He knows Ice Beam, one of two moves that was taught to him by Oshawittle for the Motostoke Gym Battle alongside Aqua Jet.
  • Image Song: According to Goldenheart388, Geddy's English character theme is "The Pass" by Rush, so picked due to the song being an anti-suicide track, and a reminder that "all of us do time in the gutter/dreamers turn to look at the cars". Considering Geddy's nature as The Caretaker and The Heart of the group, he would most likely be the first member of the team to stop someone from considering or attempting suicide, comfort them through their personal issues ("it's not as if you're all alone/in wanting to explode"), or scold/lament for them in the event that they did commit suicide ("Christ, what have you done?"). In addition, the song was among Geddy Lee's favorites to perform as a member of Rush. His Broadway character theme, "You Will Be Found" from Dear Evan Hansen, deals with similar aspects of Geddy's personality as "The Pass", mainly his kindness towards others and belief that someone is better than they think they are, as well as his tendency to pick other people up after they've been brought down.
    • His Japanese image song, meanwhile, is "Long Hope Philia", which is more or less the JP version of "The Pass", dealing with the same lyrical themes and personality aspects as both of the aforementioned songs. However, the song also dives deeper into some of Geddy's more personal issues, mainly how his friends helped him in the wake of the aftermath of Neil Peart's death ("I should have rescued but got rescued instead"). It also implies several things about Geddy's backstory prior to meeting Kim, namely that he suffered some mass amount of loss in his past prior to meeting her.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: While not Immune to Mind Control (as AFD proved), according to Goldenheart388 if anyone tried to play mind games with him, his Heroic Self-Deprecation and Humble Hero nature would prevent him from being able to be broken. This was backed up in the Jigsaw plot, where Geddy, upon hearing the real Kim start crying due to her getting broken by Jigsaw, was the first to realize that the voices of his "friends" he was hearing were not real, and subsequently was the first Pokemon to finish his game.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Among the kindest members of the team, and has blue eyes in both of his forms.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: Kind, sensitive, a lover of music and singing, the healer of the group, and a lover of magical girl-based anime, to the extent of him even getting a magical girl Transformation Sequence for his evolution into a Primarina.
  • Kindly Vet: Serves as the main cleric among the original 5.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: He has several main examples of this, but the biggest example is him going absolutely haywire and performing "Cygnus X-1" in the midst of his magical girl-esque Transformation Sequence, before nailing the opponent to the floor via the use of Sparkling Aria (during which Kim unknowingly performs her first "Reverian cue" before Kendall stopped using them).
  • The Load: While Geddy himself is not this, he'd probably see himself as one.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Despite the fact that he is male. Geddy himself is a Bishōnen who is In Touch with His Feminine Side.
  • Luminescent Blushing: This is Geddy's main Character Tic, done whenever he is given any praise or credit that he feels is undeserved. It's rather befitting of his Modest nature.
  • Lunacy: He knows Moonblast and Moonlight as of the League.
  • Made of Iron: Despite the fact that Geddy's lowest stat is Defense, he is shown to be able to take more hits than most members of his species would otherwise be able to. The League battle against Kendall, however, shows that this is downplayed, and he's still nowhere near as much of this as Ringo.
  • Magic Idol Singer: Geddy is a fan of prog rock and has an impressive singing voice, and is able to use not only Fairy-type moves, but is also able to control bubbles with his voice. (See also "sound and fury...")
  • Magic Is Feminine: Geddy is a Bishounen Fairy-type.
  • Magic Music: His Signature Move is Sing and his Secret Art is Sparkling Aria, both of which are sound-based moves. One puts the opponent to sleep; the other cures them of burns... if it doesn't wreck them first.
  • Make Me Wanna Shout: His Growl attack is a full blown metal scream, and his Secret Art, Sparkling Aria, is done to the last two lines of "Cygnus X-1", also known as the song that features the highest note ever hit by his namesake. He also knows Disarming Voice.
  • Making a Splash: Geddy is a Water-type Pokemon, and knows multiple Water-type moves, among them Aqua Jet, Dive, Life Dew, and most notably Sparkling Aria.
  • Martial Pacifist: He started out as this, only willing to use status moves in battle and only using actual moves (i.e. physical or special) as a last resort. After Motostoke and his evolution into a Primarina, however, he's moved to being a full-blown Technical Pacifist.
  • Meaningful Name: Geddy was named after Geddy Lee, the lead singer, bassist, and keyboardist of the prog rock band Rush. While mainly named as such due to his Dude Looks Like a Lady-esque design fitting with the gender confusion that many fans had towards Lee for years, the name also is an indication of his nature. Geddy Lee is, in essence, the "purple" oni to the Red Oni, Blue Oni pairing that was Alex Lifeson (a goofball of the highest order) and Neil Peart (who was shy, bookish, and philosophical). By contrast, Lee is a modest Nice Guy— in an interview with Dan Rather he mentioned feeling guilty for an entire tour bus ride home after he walked away from a group of fans who wanted his autograph. While far more sensitive than his namesake, Geddy (the Primarina) is extremely modest and kindhearted, and has an incredibly powerful singing voice similar to that of said namesake.
    • His Hasslemon handle is modestPinniped (MP). On the surface, it is nothing more than an expression of his personality and species. However, it has a hidden meaning to it— it abbreviates to MP, which is the same as that of Rush's most famous album (and Geddy's favorite Rush album)- Moving Pictures, also known as the song with "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight" on it.
  • Metal Scream: This is what Geddy's Growl manifests itself as.
  • Mighty Glacier: While lacking in terms of Speed and Defense, Geddy, as a Primarina, has the highest Special Attack and Special Defense of all Water starters and the highest Special Attack stat out of all of Kim's starter mons period.
  • Moe: He is among the cutest members of Kimberly Bond's team; only Elton, Dalt, and Ringo come even close.
  • Motherly Side Plait: While usually his default hair style in art, Geddy only ever wears this hairstyle (usually the default for Primarina) on rare occassions— while singing or battling, it switches over to his actual default hairstyle, which is wild '80s Hair.
  • Musical Assassin: He knows a ton of sound-based moves, and his favorites are Sing and Sparkling Aria— the latter of which he uses to absolutely decimate his opponents, especially when combined with the highest note of his namesake's career.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: He entered a bit of a crisis upon seeing Kabu's Arcanine frozen as a result of his Ice Beam move during the Kabu battle, and desperately wanted to not see it suffer anymore.
  • Nice Guy: Among the nicest on the entire team and decidedly so among the original 5.
  • Non-Ironic Clown: He had this design as a Popplio.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Geddy differs from other members of his species via the pair of Cool Shades he has worn since Motostoke.
  • Not So Above It All: He has an implied Nightmare Fetishist side and enjoys songs about Al Capone killing a bunch of cops (seriously, see Hidden Depths above).
  • Not So Weak: Geddy, in the heat of battle, is an absolute beast in the Special Attack department... though the battle against Kendall shows that he's a bit lacking in the strategic and defensive areas.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Any moment wherein Geddy breaks from his established persona of a self-deprecating Nice Guy is extremely jarring to witness.
    • Excluding the obvious tells of this (him breaking his typing quirk; him yelling at anybody; him actively using physical moves in battle rather than special ones or status moves), there is one very well-known use of this trope relating to Geddy— his Anguished Outburst upon hearing about Neil Peart's death. While Geddy believing the death of Peart was unfair and him sobbing about said death is completely in-character for him, given that he takes unfair tragedies very seriously, him snapping at his friends in the midst of his grief when they try to comfort him and especially him letting loose with a Precision F-Strike is decidedly not. The latter incident in particular left everyone stunned into silence by Geddy's use of "profspeak", as Orwell referred to it. Additionally, the incident also doubled as a case of this for Goldenheart388 herself— prior to this her only instances of profanity were mild uses of "hell", "damn", and "bloody"- due to the fact that Geddy's thoughts echoed her own regarding Peart's death, she decided to go full-throttle in order to convey the extent of the emotions she felt in her head upon hearing that Peart died.
  • Our Fairies Are Different: A Fairy-type Pokemon that resembles a mermaid.
  • Our Mermaids Are Different: Being a Primarina, Geddy also takes several notes from sirens.
  • Out of Focus: Wholly averted— Geddy has the most character development and screentime out of the original 5 by a large margin; only Dio comes close.
  • Pink Means Feminine: His pink stars on his face, his pink nose, and his pink tail spikes.
  • Precision F-Strike: Say it with us now!
Geddy: NONE OF IT IS FUCKING FAIR!
  • Prone to Tears: Geddy is extremely kindhearted and sensitive, often bursting into tears whenever he hears about suffering that other people have endured. Besides him sobbing his heart out in a burst of anguish upon hearing about the death of Neil Peart, he also cried buckets of tears upon hearing about how Hoops was burned by a Gigantamax Centiskorch in their youth after taking them out of the Gym to comfort them in the midst of a panic attack.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Well, mostly blue, in this case, but Geddy does have several pink elements, and can absolutely demolish you in battle if necessary.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: He serves as the calm, patient, and kindhearted Blue Oni to the loud and impulsive, if somewhat forgetful Dio's Red Oni.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: He was this as a Popplio and Brionne, and continues to be pretty adorable even as a Primarina.
  • Secret Art: Sparkling Aria serves as his signature move, and he has his Hidden Ability Liquid Voice, which makes all of his sound-based moves Water-type.
  • Selkies and Wereseals: He's a Primarina; this should be obvious.
  • Significant Birthdate: He shares his birthday, July 29th, with his namesake. This trend continues for all of Kim's mons except for Orwell, Peechee, and Boseman.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Ohhhh yes. Geddy is kindhearted, patient, and comforting to just about anyone, but don't underestimate his skills in battle. He has 125 base Special Attack for a reason.
  • Sirens Are Mermaids: Being a Primarina, he is based in part on both.
  • Snot Bubble: As a Popplio and Brionne, he enjoyed launching water balloons from his nose- although he never actually used them that much in battle.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: Exceedingly humble and a bit shy, but also very much willing to take anyone down.
  • Something Only They Would Say: Or not say, rather— Geddy's giveaway during the Bond or Break game was that he had none. As the most modest and low-key member of Kim's team, he had no identifying factor that gave him away like the others who played the game did- his giveaway was that he sounded, effectively, the most "normal" of the team.
  • Squishy Wizard: Despite the fact that Geddy, as a Primarina, has immense Special stats, the League battle against Kendall proved that he's a bit on the slow side and also doesn't have that great of physical defense.
  • Starter Mon: Kimberly Bond's second "traditional" starter mon, after Kaylan.
  • Status Buff: He knows the move Calm Mind as of the League, and often pairs it with Stored Power (a move that gets more powerful the greater the buffs) to absolutely demolish opponents that don't take advantage of it.
  • Sweet Seal: Geddy is a kindhearted and sweet Pokemon who is based on a seal.
  • Tareme Eyes: Geddy has these only in his human form as Dirk Weinreb.
  • Tarot Motifs: According to Goldenheart388, Geddy's associated Tarot Card is Strength, representing Geddy's kindness, patience, and martial/technical pacifism.
  • Team Mom: Despite not being female, Geddy serves as this, due to being The Caretaker of the group.
  • Tender Tears: Geddy is very much prone to these, most notably crying them after seeing Hoops' burn scars from the Gigantamax Centiskorch that got them in their youth.
  • Technical Pacifist: He's become this in the wake of his evolution into a Primarina, now being fully comfortable with using all sorts of moves on the opponent and even fainting them— although he still won't kill them.
  • True Blue Femininity: Geddy is a mostly-blue Water/Fairy type with an exceedingly feminine design.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: According to Goldenheart388, it's honeydew, a reference to the Rush song "Xanadu".
  • Unconventional Formatting: Downplayed slightly. Geddy has a typing quirk on Hasslemon like everyone else does, but befitting his modest nature, it's one that is very much low-key: it merely consists of him surrounding his words with parenthesis and closing them off with a less-than symbol so as to have the full text resemble a fish.
  • Vocal Dissonance: On the surface, he's a kindhearted, seal-like Pokemon, but when he starts singing...
  • Vocal Evolution: As a Popplio and Brionne, his headcanon voice was Brina Palencia; as a Primarina, it's his own namesake.
  • Weaponized Ball: His Sparkling Aria attack involves him using his voice to control water and explode multiple water balls over his opponent.
  • Wild Hair: His default hairstyle, and the one he wears whenever he uses Sing or Sparkling Aria (and especially the latter).

     Elton

Elton (Scorbunny -> Raboot -> Cinderace)

Kim's first Galar Pokemon, an eternal optimist who has an immense amount of Undying Loyalty to his friends and is always willing to cheer them up or give them advice whenever necessary. While he is eager to please and has a love for battling, he isn't the least bit arrogant, and much prefers to help others rather than show off or boast about his own abilities. He has a massive love of game shows as well, and enjoys playing with his closest friends on the team— Freddie and Orwell.

 Replaces every ins+ance of +he le++er T or +he word "plus" wi+h a plus sign, which serves as a represen+a+ion of his fun-loving and op+imis+ic na+ure.

Tropes associated with him include:

  • 11th-Hour Superpower: His Blaze ability manifests as this, often flaring up whenever he gets near fainting. Most notably, his first activation of Blaze- while he was Dynamaxed, mind you- against Milo's Eldegoss led directly into his evolution into a Raboot (while still Dynamaxed).
  • The Ace: It's right there in his species' Japanese name— he's among the strongest battlers on Kimberly Bond's entire team and is one of the best singers that there is. However, this being Elton, he's not one to brag about his abilities, instead being far more willing to pass his knowledge on to the rest of the team members.
  • Achilles' Heel: Ground-type moves, the only one of his three weaknesses that he doesn't have coverage for (and to make matters worse, he doesn't have Libero either).
  • Action Hero: One of the most battle-loving members of Kim's entire team— only Peechee surpasses him.
  • Action Initiative: He has known Quick Attack since he was a Scorbunny.
  • A Friend in Need: Like Geddy, he is willing to help just about any of his friends with their problems if they ask him. He mainly does this towards his two biggest friends on the team— Freddie and Orwell.
  • All-Loving Hero: Exceedingly optimistic, kindhearted, and friendly towards just about everyone he meets. That being said, however, if you do anything to hurt his friends or his Trainer, he won't hesitate to end you.
  • Animal Motifs: Bunnies, naturally, but also reptiles, especially crocodiles and lizards (the latter is likely due to his friendship with Freddie).
  • The Anti-Nihilist: Being The Pollyanna by nature, this is effectively his main viewpoint on life. It's the entire premise behind "Departure" being his Japanese character theme, and this viewpoint of his slowly rubs off on Freddie over time.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: He asks a particularly piercing one to Kim regarding her relationship with 9-Volt. Upon Kim telling Elton that she saw 9-Volt as someone who she could trust and someone who could help her, Elton responds by asking his Trainer if that was the only thing she ever saw him as. It's this question that gets Kim to realize just how much she's taken advantage of 9-Volt's kindness.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: He's been shown to get a bit distracted from time to time; most notably, in the midst of Kim's BOB game for her Mega Stone, he got distracted by his excitement the moment he realized he was on a game show.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: His knowledge on battling techniques is so thorough that he was able to recognize immediately that Dave wasn't the Proud Warrior Race Guy he claimed to be (and in fact was as much of an Actual Pacifist as the rest of the members of his species) when he recognized that Dave wasn't putting enough power behind his Double Kick. If any power at all. This, of course, led to him slowly realizing that the only reason someone like Dave would purposefully not put any power behind his Double Kick attack was because he didn't want to actually hurt anyone.
  • Badass Adorable: One of the cutest mons on Kim's team along with Geddy, Freddie, Dalt, and Ringo— and by far the best battler on the whole team out of all of them, being an excellent speedster with a ton of 100% accurate moves on his side as well as a strong sense of justice and an immense sense of Undying Loyalty towards his companions.
  • Badass Armfold: He will sometimes adopt this pose, despite it being the default of his species' Gigantamax form.
  • Beast Man: As a Cinderace, he's a member of the Human-Like egg group.
  • Berserk Button: Here's a massive warning for any of Elton's enemies: if you value your life, never, EVER hurt, make fun of, or insult Freddie or Orwell- and especially the former- because the moment that you do, Elton will come after you and he will make you regret it. Marnie's Liepard learned this the hard way after calling Freddie a "cripple"; Elton was so enraged by it that he broke his typing quirk and demanded to know who did it, which Geddy instantly took notice of.
    • For that matter, don't say anything against his Trainer, either, as Jigsaw found out the even harder way. Bullies in general are a major berserk button for him; likely, this spawned from when he first met Freddie after the latter had been literally abandoned on the streets. It also explains his particularly close friendships with Dio and Ringo, both of whom were also abandoned/bullied.
  • Battle Aura: He becomes surrounded by this whenever his Blaze ability activates.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The vast majority of Elton's friendships with other mons often start with him showing an act of kindness towards them. The most notable examples include Freddie (comforting him in the midst of a panic attack and giving him chocolate) and Orwell (not finding his use of Newspeak strange and proceeding to play the Newspeak game with him).
  • Beware the Nice Ones:
EL: WHO JUST CALLED FREDDIE A CRIPPLE?!?!
  • Beautiful Singing Voice: Elton has a love of singing, and can often be seen singing songs to himself on numerous occasions. According to Goldenheart388, his (non-singing) voice is provided by the one and only Taron Egerton (his headcanon voice when speaking is Tom Holland).
  • Big Brother Mentor: He mainly served as this towards Freddie when he was a Sobble, helping to educate him regarding battling during the Pythonplot.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He has an immense sense of this towards Freddie (obviously) and Orwell (the only one on the team who can understand his Newspeak in full), and has served to comfort and cheer up both of them during their respective darkest periods in their life.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He's performed these moments on multiple occasions, most notably in the numerous Gym Battles that Kimberly Bond has participated in.
  • Big Eater: While decidedly not as much of this as Kaylan is, he still enjoys eating a lot of food. That being said, though, he's equally as likely to share his food with others— the way he first met Freddie was by giving him a piece of chocolate after comforting him from a panic attack. He also has a tendency to give other mons berries in order to heal their HP or cure their hunger— he notably gave a berry to Marnie's Morpeko at the end of their battle.
  • Blow You Away: He knows, and has used, the Flying-type move Bounce, and is also able to use Acrobatics.
  • Body Pocket: He had these as a Raboot.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Extremely exciteable, fun-loving, and happy-go-lucky, but also very much up for a good battle with just about anyone.
  • Bold Explorer: He has a love of travelling the world and seeing new places, and was among the four mons (along with Joel, Gallag, and Debussy) who went to Ultra Space with Kim at the start of her Alola arc. Of those four, he was decidedly the most excited about it (given that the other three mons are, respectively, The Philosopher, an Actual Pacifist Surfer Dude, and a Shrinking Violet bookworm).
  • Bouncing Battler: He knows the move Bounce, and sometimes uses it to avoid any super effective attacks.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: While not as likely to do it as Jagger, he's still one of the most likely mons on Kim's team to do this.
  • Break the Cutie: It's downplayed slightly, but in the wake of him believing that Freddie had supposedly fainted against Marnie's Liepard, Elton notably is shown with a look of genuine fear on his face (the script-mode narration even states that for once in his life, he's fearing the worst). This is then followed immediately by a massive Beware the Nice Ones moment.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: While he is among the best battlers on Kim's team, he's also an adorable Cuddle Bug who has a knack for comforting other mons through panic attacks and who loves Freddie and Orwell with all of his heart.
  • Bully Hunter: As Marnie's Liepard and Jigsaw learned the hard way, Elton will go after just about anyone who makes fun of, or tortures, either Freddie or his own Trainer.
  • Bunnies for Cuteness: As a Scorbunny he was at his most adorable, but even as he evolved into a Raboot and later a Cinderace he's maintained his cuteness and his youthful energy.
  • Burning Rubber: As a Scorbunny he was able to leave behind burning footprints while running; this trait of his faded upon evolution.
  • Burning with Anger: Very literally, given his ability is Blaze.
  • The Caretaker: One of two for Freddie, along with Geddy; he doubled as his mentor when Freddie was still a Sobble.
  • Cast from Hit Points: He knows Double-Edge, but doesn't use it at all due to this trope.
  • Cavalier Competitor: He mainly tends to view battling as a sport over anything else, and often will compliment his opponents in battle (as he did against Marnie's Morpeko). Additionally, the minute someone suggests a battling game, he'll go all in on it, and has a bit of a competitive streak as a result; he notably jumped in the second Hoops suggested their battle game.
  • Challenge Seeker: Ohhhhh yes. He is willing to go up against just about anyone in battle, regardless of any type advantages they may have against him. It doesn't hurt that he knows at least one move to counter two of his three weaknesses, and even for Ground he has Bounce, Acrobatics, and U-Turn.
  • Character Tic: He has a tendency to jump off of the ground whenever he's feeling particularly excited, and according to Goldenheart388, he rubs the back of his head whenever he's nervous or embarrassed.
  • Cheerful Child: As a Scorbunny he was this to a T, but it carried on even through his evolution into a Raboot, a species normally known for their aloof nature. Upon evolving into a Cinderace, he's become more of a Cheerful Teenager (his human form has the appearance of a 13-15 year-old according to Goldenheart388, and his headcanon voice- when speaking- is Tom Holland).
  • Chewing the Scenery: He has a bit of a tendency to do this, especially in events when he gets particularly excited about certain things.
  • Childhood Friends: With Freddie; they met when the former was a Scorbunny and the latter was a Sobble that had just been abandoned by his Trainer. They've stuck by each other's side ever since.
  • Child-Like Voice: Downplayed in terms of his English dub headcanon voice (Tom Holland), completely averted in terms of his English dub headcanon singing voice (Taron Egerton), and played straight with his Japanese dub headcanon voice (Junko Takeuchi, best known as the voice of Naruto and also the original voice of Gon in the 1996 version of Hunter x Hunter).
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: His main text color is red.
  • Color Motif: Being a Cinderace, he is associated mainly with the colors red, yellow, and orange- all three of which are colors associated with enthusiasm, lightheartedness, and passion, symbolizing Elton's fun-loving and eager personality.
  • Combat Compliment: Given his nature as a fun-loving Cavalier Competitor, he is always willing to compliment his opponents in battle. He most notably did this after Marnie's Morpeko used Aura Wheel on him, causing Elton to grin at the Electric/Dark type and tell him that he was stronger than he thought.
  • The Confidant: Serves as the holder of the Sun confidant for Kimberly Bond. Besides the Persona-based stuff, though, he also serves as a general confidant for his Trainer, Freddie, and Orwell.
  • Cooldown Hug: He's given a few to Freddie, especially when the latter is in the midst of a panic attack— but he's also given some to his own trainer.
  • Cuddle Bug: Besides the above, Elton is a huge fan of hugging other mons and his own Trainer, oftentimes glomping them whenever they win a battle or learn a new move— among many other things.
  • Cute Bruiser: Elton is an adorable Cinderace— and one of the most frequent battlers on Kimberly Bond's team.
  • Cuteness Proximity: He has about the same level of this as his own Trainer. Elton will react very positively to mons that he sees as cute. Besides the obvious mons (Galvantula, Cinccino, Morpeko, any Pikachu clone), he also canonically believes that mons such as Swampert, Hydreigon, and Feraligatr are cute and will react to them the same way that he does with any "traditionally" cute Pokemon. Most notably, when he met Ringo for the first time, he immediately cooed over him, and after meeting Marnie's Morpeko, he called him cute and adorable, even wondering "what 'appened to the cute li'le Morpeko" after the latter went into his Hangry Mode. According to Goldenheart388, he also believed that Freddie was cute when he first met him.
  • David vs. Goliath: Elton, despite having the type advantage against both mons, has served as the David to the opponent's Goliath twice, and both battles ended up resulting in an evolution:
    • The first time was in the Turffield Gym, against Milo's Gigantamaxed Eldegoss. Despite the fact that he had the type advantage against said Eldegoss, it didn't change the fact that Eldegoss was fully-evolved and therefore stronger than the then-Scorbunny Elton. His Max Strike ultimately critted, sending Elton down to just 14 HP. Regardless of that, however, Elton refuses to give up, and his Blaze ability soon activates as he promptly evolves into a Raboot while still Dynamaxed. His next Max Flare KOs the Eldegoss then and there.
    • The second time was during the battle in the Circhester Gym, against Melony's Galarian Darmanitan. At first, the dynamic seems to be reversed, with Elton getting two massive supereffective hits on said Darmanitan, while the opponent only manages to hit Elton with an (albiet powerful) Headbutt. However, everything promptly goes downhill the second that Melony's Darmanitan enters its Zen Mode, promptly sending forward a supereffective Earthquake that crits and knocks Elton down to low HP again. Seconds later, Elton evolves into a Cinderace and sends out a Pyro Ball at Darmanitan to finish him off.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: While not mentioned on screen as of yet, it's been implied in his English character theme "Never Too Late" that at the very least something of this nature happened to him before he was caught by Kimberly Bond. It's very likely that said incident led to his particular friendships with mons that have been abused or bullied (Freddie, Orwell, Ringo) as well as his Bully Hunter and his Pollyanna tendencies of his personality.
I didn't find love or the peace or the breaks
These aren't excuses, but a string of mistakes
  • Death Glare: Elton gives a particularly nasty one to Marnie's Liepard after the latter refers to Freddie as a "cripple" during Kim's Spikemuth Gym battle.
  • Determinator: No matter who he's fighting in a battle, Elton will not give up until the very end. Besides the examples of David vs. Goliath above, he also has a bit of a competitive streak, and is expressly determined to win games unless he is forced into a situation where he has to forfeit. This determination extends outside of battling, however, as it is one of the main forces behind why Elton has such an immense sense of loyalty towards those he trusts; if any one of them goes through an identity crisis, Elton will not stop until he gets them to see the light. He's helped Freddie, Orwell, and Kim herself out of their respective darkest hours due to this.
  • Did Not See That Coming: His reaction to hearing Orwell use standard English for the first time after his evolution into a Crawdaunt; it shocks him so much that he ends up thinking that Orwell is sick.
  • Die or Fly: This is how he ended up learning Counter in his battle against Marnie.
  • Easily Impressed: Especially whenever he sees an evolution, a new move being learned, or any moment of character development from Freddie at all. He also gets extremely excited by game shows, and upon realizing he was on Bond or Break squeed in happiness.
  • Elemental Punch: He is able to use Fire Punch, though he has yet to use it onscreen in WAAPT as of yet.
  • Enhanced Punch: He knows Sucker Punch as an egg move.
  • Establishing Character Moment: His first appearance on screen, when he is still a wild Pokemon, shows him interacting with the Sobble that will eventually be caught and nicknamed Freddie. While Freddie starts worrying about the procedures of the wedding in front of him (believing that "taking someone as your husband/wife" meant kidnapping them), Elton marvels over the couple getting married, encourages Freddie to look on the bright side, and patiently explains to him what it actually means. All of this serves to set Elton up as an energetic, optimistic Foil to Freddie's cautious pessimism, as well as someone who is willing to stick by anyone's side and encourage them whenever they're feeling down.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones: Jigsaw, full stop. Not only did Elton express the same amount of unbridled horror as everyone else upon hearing that Kim had been broken by him, but he also actively participated in the final fight against him in the League alongside Peechee and Gilmour.
  • Excellent Judge of Character: He immediately recognizes Jigsaw, Marnie's Liepard, and the group of villains at the Orochi Plaza as threats.
  • Expressive Ears: Whenever he's sad, tired, or worried about something, his ears droop.
  • Expy: According to Goldenheart388, he serves as one for several stock shounen protagonists, namely Son Goku, Monkey D. Luffy, and Naruto. His chief inspiration, however, is Shoyo Hinata, the main protagonist of Haikyuu!!, especially given his relatively short height (Cinderace stands at 4'07") and his jumping ability (since he's a bunny).
  • Extremity Extremist: Being a soccer player bunny, Elton almost always uses kicks in fights more than punches. The only punching moves he knows are Fire Punch and Sucker Punch; the amount of kicking moves he knows is far larger in comparison.
  • Fearless Fool: He can be this to a bit of an extent at times, but is much less of this than mons like Peechee and especially Ringo are.
  • The Fettered: Elton has an immensely strong sense of justice and a large amount of loyalty towards his closest friends, willing to defend them no matter the cost.
  • Fireballs: He's capable of shooting them out at the opponents with his Pyro Ball technique.
  • Fiery Redhead: Only in his mon form (he has white hair in his human form), but his species has a red-orange hair tuft on their heads. Elton has the fun-loving and boisterous personality to match.
  • Foil: Elton serves as this to many of Kimberly Bond's Pokemon:
    • The most notable one he serves as a Foil to is his closest companion and partner, Freddie, in addition to being a literal case of Red Oni, Blue Oni. Both are Galar starters named after bombastic British musicians, but Elton is fun-loving, optimistic, peppy, accepting of himself, and all too willing to take someone down in a fight. Freddie, by contrast, is perpetually worrisome, pessimistic, extremely emotional and timid, constantly self-conscious of both other mons and of himself, has an extremely low sense of self-esteem (especially as a Drizzile), and is far more nervous when it comes to battling. While Freddie has gotten better in the self-esteem and battling fields (thanks in part to Elton encouraging him), he still remains sensitive, frantic, and pessimistic well into his Inteleon stage.
    • Elton and Orwell are both fun-loving and quirky individuals that are generally very cheerful towards everyone they meet and have a sense of naivete (although in Orwell's case it is far stronger). Elton, however, is far more genuine and open about his feelings, while Orwell is bit of a socially awkward Stepford Smiler with an extremely Dark and Troubled Past. Additionally, like Freddie, he has also had self-concious feelings about himself— he notably believed that his new Dark typing automatically made him "evil" upon evolving despite Elton's assurance that Dark Is Not Evil— and is even more terrified of battling other opponents than Freddie is, outright believing it to be torture for both himself and his opponents.
    • To a lesser extent, he serves as this to Ringo: both are plucky determinators and bully hunters of exceptionally cute species and extremely short heights. Elton, however, is a bit more cautious when it comes to battling opponents, and is far more willing to befriend them so long as they're not evil. Even when in the heat of battle, he is a Cavalier Competitor who compliments his opponents and mainly battles them just for fun. Ringo, by contrast, is a Fearless Fool and a Determinator to the extreme, willing to take on any opponent, including ones 500 times his size, and more often than not tends to think that said opponent has some ulterior motive.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Of the first five mons that Kim catches in Galar, he's the sanguine- fun-loving, boisterous, optimistic, and the epitome of The Pollyanna.
  • Fragile Speedster: His Speed is absolutely amazing; his Defense, on the other hand... note
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: He switches with Freddie on April Fools Day 2021.
  • Friend to All Children: Elton adores first-stage Pokemon, finding them absolutely adorable and willing to play with and protect them. This trait of his, along with his empathy, was one of the things that ultimately allowed him to help out Freddie in their first meeting.
  • Fun Personified: The most extreme example out of Kim's mons, only Dio and Dalt come close. Besides his love of battling (which he views as a sport above all else), he's fun-loving and peppy in general, loves playing games with his fellow mons, and enjoys watching numerous gameshows.
  • Gleeful and Grumpy Pairing: Downplayed with his relationship with Freddie. While Elton is certainly gleeful, Freddie isn't so much grumpy as he is a frantic, pessimistic Nervous Wreck.
  • The Glomp: Elton has a tendency to glomp his fellow mons after they win battles or after finding out about their evolutions. Freddie is the most common target of this, obviously, but Elton has also glomped numerous mons after finding out that they've evolved, among them Kaylan, Dalt, and especially Orwell.
  • Good Feels Good: This is, in effect, the main reason why Elton is so kind to other people and Pokemon- he enjoys being a good person and believes it to be the right thing to do.
  • Good Is Not Soft: As Jigsaw learned the hard way, despite the fact that Elton is a Technical Pacifist in its strictest definition, that doesn't mean that he won't be willing to beat up any opponents within an inch of their life if they happen to hurt his friends or his Trainer. Additionally, had Freddie not given the Liepard a tear-filled "Reason You Suck" Speech and evolved soon afterwards, it's heavily implied that Elton would have torn Marnie's Liepard to shreds upon hearing Freddie get called a "cripple".
  • Graceful Loser: Naturally, given that Elton views most battles as nothing more than a friendly competition. While he has yet to lose a battle yet on screen, according to Goldenheart388, he would be this to a T if he lost one.
  • Grin of Audacity: Elton has a tendency to sport these in battle whenever he's performed a move that is sure to knock out a strong opponent, such as his Pyro Ball finisher against Marnie's Galarian Darmanitan shortly after evolving. He shares this trait with his trainer and has had it since he was a Scorbunny.
  • The Heart: One of three mons (along with Geddy and Ringo) to fill this role among their respective groups of mons. Elton serves as this for not only his companion Freddie, but for all of the Galarian mons period. He's comforted Freddie multiple times and has given him chocolate (his Trademark Favorite Food) after doing so, he helped Orwell to realize that Dark Is Not Evil, he helped Dio out upon seeing Dio in a slump after his loss in the New Year's Eve battle, he tried to help Dave learn Double Kick, and the list goes on from there. He's even helped his own Trainer through her struggles on numerous occassions, most notably after the League when Kim starts worrying about her battling skills and her relationship with 9-Volt potentially going sour. Whenever he's around, people and Pokemon generally feel far more cheerful.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Said kindness towards people and Pokemon (as mentioned above) has helped to change the lives of Kim and her Pokemon for the better as a result. If not for him, Freddie wouldn't be fully accepting of himself (and probably wouldn't even be on the team at all), Orwell would probably still be shunned for his Newspeak, and Kim wouldn't be studying UBese and decidedly wouldn't have started a blog about her findings.
  • Heroic BSoD: While he hasn't completely broken down yet (he is The Pollyanna, after all), he does go into a very brief one after thinking that Freddie has fainted due to the attack from Marnie's Liepard in Spikemuth. Fortunately for Elton, he's stopped from falling any further into this via Freddie's Heroic Second Wind, "No More Holding Back" Speech, and subsequent evolution into an Inteleon.
  • Heroic Resolve: Elton has a huge amount of this. While still nowhere near the level of resolve that Ringo has, it will take a lot to get Elton to faint or surrender to an opponent.
  • Heroic Second Wind: He's had this in battle multiple times, but his most notable example of this by far is in the Turffield battle, when he's down to just 14 HP while Dynamaxed against Milo's also-Dynamaxed Eldegoss. Seconds later, his Blaze ability activates, and he starts flaring up with energy. And then he glows blue. This is then followed by the newly-evolved, still Dynamaxed Raboot absolutely nailing Milo's Eldegoss to the ground.
  • Heroic Spirit: In addition to Heroic Resolve, Elton also has this. His nature as the group's resident Pollyanna makes him essentially immune to giving in to despair; if he ever gets sad for any reason he almost always will find a way to pick himself back up again.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: His relationships with Freddie (for now) and Orwell fall firmly into this. Elton and Freddie have traveled together since pretty much the beginning and are willing to protect each other no matter the cost. They see each other as their best friends and compatriots, although according to Goldenheart388 this relationship is planned to ultimately turn into something more. On the other hand, Elton and Orwell's relationship is purely platonic; besides Freddie, Orwell is Elton's closest companion on the team. He congratulated Orwell after his evolution, helped him through his Heroic BSoD, and enjoys playing the Newspeak game with him repeatedly. Due to him having read 1984 beforehand (and also due to the Newspeak game rounds), Elton is the only one fully able to understand Orwell's Newspeak, something that Orwell greatly appreciates.
  • Hidden Depths: Elton is far more well-read and far smarter than he initially appears. He's read 1984 (therefore allowing him to understand Orwell's Newspeak), he is able to understand most of Kim's linguistic lessons, he's watched Only Connect multiple times and won (though he's still nowhere near as good as Ananpi and his skills in OC are helped by him actually being from Galar), and he was one of four mons, along with the more introspective Joel, Gallag, and Debussy, who went with Kim to Ultra Megapolis. According to Goldenheart388, he's also read all of Oliver Twist, and enjoys going to musicals based on books, with Oliver! being his favorite. In addition to this, he has a very impressive singing voice, and knows a lot about certain musicians, among them his own namesake, Queen, and Rush.
  • Hot-Blooded: Immensely so. He's extremely energetic, peppy, and absolutely loves battling.
  • Humble Hero: Despite Elton's immense love of battling, he differs slightly from the rest of the members of his species due to this. He isn't one to brag about his accomplishments or abilities; he just has battles for the fun of it, and is willing to help out anyone in regards to their skills.
  • I Am What I Am: He differs very much from Freddie in this regard. Freddie has an immensely low sense of self-esteem, especially when he was a Drizzile, and believes people will hate him due to him still having gripper claws. Even as an Inteleon, after he's gone through substantial character development and has grown to accept himself more, he still has a tendency to hide his gripper claws away. Elton, on the other hand, knows who he is and knows his limitations, and won't pretend to be anyone he's not in order to fit in. This aspect of his is touched on ever so slightly in his English Image Song, "Never Too Late" by Elton John:
It's never too late to get up off the ground
Don't have to be noticed, don't have to be crowned
I get what I've done and I don't try to hide
I lost many things, but never my pride
  • The Idiot from Osaka: Elton isn't an idiot by any means, but the Osakan accent still very much applies here. According to Goldenheart388, Elton would speak in Kansai-ben if WAAPT ever got a Japanese dub, in part due to the fact that Goku speaks in one and in part due to it being a Japanese translation of his regular slight Cockney accent in the original English dub. He'd also refer to himself as oira in the JP dub as a result. It ultimately serves to accentuate Elton's fun-loving and optimistic yet boisterous nature while also fooling the audience into thinking he's far dumber than he actually is.
  • I Got Bigger: Twice after each of his evolutions, though he still didn't get that much bigger— Cinderace is 4'07" in height, the second-shortest fire starter (only Infernape surpasses it).
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Elton engaged in a bit of this after Kimberly Bond found herself completely broken by Jigsaw and proceeded to get electroshock torture from a Jigsaw illusion of 9-Volt— the first indication that Jigsaw's "illusions" were anything but.
  • Image Song: Like Kaylan, Elton's English character theme has changed numerous times- three times in fact. However, unlike Kaylan, they have all been sung by his namesake artist. His first character theme was "I'm Still Standing" by Elton John (though the Taron Egerton version of the song from Sing was the one that was ultimately used in the Spotify playlist), which served as an ode to Elton's Determinator image and his plucky behavior. It also was the song that delved the most into his Dark and Troubled Past. After a bit it was changed to "I'm Gonna Love Me Again", the Academy-award winning song from the end credits of Rocketman, sung by both Elton John and Taron Egerton. The song in question is far more subtle of a theme than "I'm Still Standing" was, but relates to Elton's I Am What I Am personality and his role as Freddie's foil (Freddie's character theme, "Somebody to Love" by Queen, directly relates back to his own immense lack of self-esteem). The song actually stuck around for a while before it was again replaced, and Elton's current character theme, as well as his main English language one, is "Never Too Late" by Elton John, the song from the end credits of the 2019 version of The Lion King. The song effectively combines the aspects of the previous two themes, dealing mainly with Elton's plucky, optimistic personality while also delving somewhat into his relationship with Freddie (the first verse can effectively be seen as him encouraging Freddie). It also delves, albiet very subtly, into his implied Dark and Troubled Past.
    • His Broadway and JP character themes, meanwhile, deal with very different aspects of his personality. His Broadway character theme is "Consider Yourself", from the musical Oliver! (natch), which delves into his role as The Heart of the group and his ability to accept just about anybody regardless of their quirks or differences (most notably regarding Freddie and Orwell). It also, notably, is the song that delves the most into Elton's optimistic and kindhearted nature:
If it's your chance to be we should see some harder days
    Empty larder days
    Why grouse?
    • The song is further exemplified by it being sung by a Cockney character.
    • Finally, his JP character theme is "Departure!", the opening theme to Hunter × Hunter. Specifically, it's the version of the song sung by the lead character of said anime, Gon (voiced by Megumi Han in this case). This song is in direct tandem with Freddie's JP image song, "Acacia" by BUMP OF CHICKEN, and consists entirely of Elton encouraging Freddie to smile more, believe in himself more, and become more courageous. He flat-out tells Freddie that "[his] birth has significance" and thanks the Earth for giving him such a great friend for a Pokemon, outright comparing him to an angel multiple times in the song. While Departure! is mostly being sung to Freddie rather than being explicitly related to Elton like the other two songs are, it does give a great amount of insight into Elton's character as a result: namely that he is always willing to encourage his best friend, and wants him to have the same amount of happiness and belief in himself that he does. From this we get to see Elton's compassion for his friends on full display, as well as his optimistic belief in his friends and his determination to see them get better. In terms of the Elton-Freddie relationship, "Departure!" is the initial call, and "Acacia" is the response; according to Goldenheart388, she initially didn't think about having the two songs be a direct response to each other until she read the lyrics to "Departure" for the first time and realized how well it fit Elton's opinion of Freddie; from there she picked "Acacia" for Freddie as a response to "Departure!".
