Reality Check Summer Camp

    In General
Reality Check Camp is a summer camp for kids with problematic behavioral problems located in Connecticut near Gravesfield that lasts for the 3 months of summer. That is until Governor Maxwell takes over it...
  • Condescending Compassion: Luz finds their banner to be a case of this.
  • Government Conspiracy: Luz ponders if the U.S. government is backing the whole Death Camp thing, if news wasn't all over that 33 kids got kidnapped by the governor of Connecticut for some twisted experiment. Turns out to this isn't the first time they've done this.
  • Greed: Luz doubts that she could sue for peace with the other teams to pull an Enemy Mine because the prize money promised by Governor Maxwell would make them want to kill each other.
The Governor was banking on everyone’s Greed to push this whole thing along. So that kids would cave in and kill one another for his sick amusement.
  • Home Base: The Alpha Squadron's team base is hidden in the forest with moat surrounding it and a draw bridge for a door.
  • Judge, Jury, and Executioner: Luz concludes that she and the rest of the kidnapped superpowered teens were all expected to be this to each other in the Death Game.
  • Imagination Destroyer: All For One paints the real Reality Check Camp as this to Luz, noting that stripping away one's creativity isn't the answer to their behavioral problems, as it would be better to give them guidance and direction for it instead. He even goes as far as to compare the place to a conversion camp. In fact, the original Reality Check Camp was supposed to be this according to the Camp Counselor, before The Governor came along and turned it into a Deadly Game.
  • Legalized Evil: Governor Maxwell tells the superhuman kids that any crimes they commit the Death Camp will be swept under the rug. And he does mean any crime.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": All the superhuman teens have this reaction they're told by the Governor of Connecticut he arranged for them to be kidnapped and put into a death-game scenario.
  • Parents as People: Its implied that many of the parents of the superhuman teens sent them to the camp because of the power outbreak, their bad behavior and mental disorders, because they didn't know how to handle them.
  • Stunned Silence: The superpowered teenagers are scared into silence as the Antagonistic Governor explains why he kidnapped them.
  • Tap on the Head: Luz felt a sharp and sudden pain in the back of her head, before being knocked out at nighttime. The same thing happened to the other kids and they all wake up during daylight no worse for wear.

    Rodger Maxwell - The Governor

Rodger Maxwell

Debut: Chapter 1/ Episode 1: Luz Noceda - Origin

Quirk: Quirkless

He's the main antagonist of season 1 and the 45-year old governor of Connecticut, who wishes to wipe all superpowers kids from the country and sets up a death game on Reality Check Summer Camp in order to kill off the superpowered kids near Gravesfield.

Tropes that apply to Rewrite and Original

  • Above Good and Evil: When Counsellor Johnson laments that the Death Camp plan isn't right, Governor Maxwell simply just shrugs and tells him what's right and what's wrong doesn't matter in the end, when learning how to serve your nation.
  • Absolute Xenophobe: He set up an entire death game one day after people started showing up with superpowers. Not only that, but he did so with the expressed intention of wiping all of the super-powered kids off of the map, or at least, from his State of Connecticut.
  • Antagonistic Governor: Maxwell is blatantly played out to be a massive douchebag and a morally bankrupt character, seeing as he put 33 children of varying ages into a literal death game for his sick kicks and hatred toward those with powers.
  • Arc Villain: Maxwell is the first of many villains that will show up throughout the course of the story. He is NOT the main villain of the fanfic, but rather the villain of the arc he is contained in.
  • Beard of Evil: Maxwell sometimes strokes his beard like a supervillain.
  • Blatant Lies: He promised to keep the winning team alive and give them billions, when he had no plans on letting them any of them live. He also claims he didn't legally kidnap them, when he obviously did.
  • Corrupt Politician: Rodger Maxwell was very much this.
  • Deadly Game: Maxwell has the 33 kidnapped teenagers all compete in a Death Game where they are split into teams and are force to kill each other. Luz refers to this as "murder with extra steps".
  • Fantastic Racism: Maxwell refers to the superhuman teenagers as "biological weapons" and "freaks" as far as he's concerned, the fewer of these superhuman "freaks" that existed, the better. He also refers to Luz as the "parasite" after finding out about her Quirk.
  • Faux Affably Evil: When the soldiers pull out their semi-automatic guns to cow the vocal protests of the kidnapped kids, Maxwell tells them to put their weapons down, as it's unnecessary on children while being visibly amused at the sight of it all.
  • FBI Agent: Despite not being one, Governor Maxwell is described as looking like the stereotype, minus the sunglasses and wiretap connected to his ear.
  • Final Solution: His Evil Plan was to try and wipe all superhumans from the map out of Fantastic Racism. Luckily, he was stopped and arrested before he could carry this out further.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: In a story that has superhumans, witches, and demons, Rodger Maxell a state governor is Luz's most despicable villains.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: He's described as having light blue eyes and has a cold-hearted personality.
  • Irrational Hatred: His distain for Quirk users is this.
  • It's All About Me: When it comes down to it, the Death Camp is for his sake rather than for his country's.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: The Governor is arrested by the military for creating the Deadly Game at the Summer Camp in chapter 12 and is sentenced to life in prison.
  • Kick the Dog: The Governor didn't plan to give the kids back to their parents. He plans to make the camp counsellor lie and say that some tragedy occurred and they all died.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Governor Rodger Maxwell's introduction establishes the story as Darker and Edgier. He is the mastermind behind the Death Camp intent on killing the 33 kids just because they had superpowers and ultimately responsible for many of their gruesome fates. His machinimas continue to haunt Luz long after his arrest and imprisonment.
  • Large and in Charge: Rodger Maxwell is described as a large, over 6 ft. tall, muscular man like pro wrestler and was the Governor in the State of Connecticut.
  • Manipulative Bastard: The governor planned to set something up between the 3 groups that would cause a massive fight to ensue, and once it was done, introduce Luz to the situation, in where then she could take the powers from the fallen, and kill the rest of the stragglers after taking their powers, then rinse repeat until there were no more left in his State.
  • Near-Villain Victory: With nearly all the superpowered teens dead and Luz suffering from a Heroic RRoD, Governor Maxwell would've got exactly what he wanted had the military not pulled a Big Damn Heroes and arrest him, while saving the survivors.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Rodger Maxwell was based on real-world Republican governor Ron DeSantis.
  • Nuke 'em: The Governor planned to do this to Luz if his project succeeded.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Rodger's main motivation for putting 33 superpowered kids into a Battle Royale-style Deadly Game is so that he can get rid of those with superpowers, due to his personal disdain for them. He is very open about his hatred for them while thinking over his plans for the future in chapter 9, that being making Luz take all of the powers of those in Connecticut while contained in the forest, before then bombing the area with Luz inside; all because of his disdain for superpowers.
  • Psychotic Smirk:
    • Maxwell has this when he sees the looks of dread on the teens he abducted.
    • He also does this when he witnesses Luz's Power Parasite Quirk work on her friend Julia, from his security camera.
  • Sadist: What else would you call a bastard that forces kids to kill each other after threating to have their kidnapped parents murdered?
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: He certainly believes he can do this and milks this throughout his appearances. He's eventually proven wrong as he gets arrested.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: Maxwell tells Counsellor Johnson that he paid off his bosses with extra funding for Reality Check Camp to allow him to carry out his project.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: The Governor is described as wearing a black two-piece suit, with a white dress shirt underneath, and a black tie.
  • Sinister Surveillance: Governor Maxwell witnesses Luz's Quirk in action via this.
  • Smug Snake: Its very full of himself believing that his plan to wipe out superhuman children would be appreciated by the government. He was proven wrong when he was arrested and sentenced to life.
  • Super-Soldier: Maxwell notes while he could make Luz into the perfect super soldier after she steals all the Quirks in the area as another easy alternative to get her out of the way, but he'd rather than just have her killed after he pulls a You Have Out Lived Your Usefulness on the girl.
  • Tyrant Takes the Helm: Governor Maxwell takes control of the Reality Check Camp from the original counsellor and turns it into a Death Camp.
  • The Unfought: He is ultimately arrested and sentenced to life in prison before Luz gets a chance to confront him personally to avenge her friends.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: The governor tries to present himself as this, explain his motive for kidnapping 33 superpowered children to monitor said powers. Though its clear he's just making excuses.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He had over 30 kids kidnapped so that they could all die in his Deadly Game.

Tropes that apply to the Rewrite only

  • Archnemesis Dad: Its implied that he's Arla's biological father, one of the kidnapped superhuman kids.
  • Bad Boss: He doesn't treat his soldiers much better than the kids. Case and point, when one the soldiers shoots off a bit early, he pulls out a revolver and gives him a Boom, Headshot! for that.
  • Broken Pedestal: Maxwell is this to his old friend Sergeant Dempsey for organizing the Death Camp, that he'd rather die than work for him any more.
Dempsey: Max, buddy, I respect ya mate. Through ‘n through I did. We agreed on a lot. When you proposed this idea to me and this little group here, I thought you were joking. But then ya go out and do it and throw me into this mess? What kinda friend does that? So, ya know what, fuck you. Fuck you, and fuck your little twisted game. If you hadn’t jammed communications, I would’ve alerted the rest of the military to your shit. I’ll see ya in hell.
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • While monitoring the camper kids, Maxwell remarks that he does not want to see the minors getting frisky with each other.
    • He thinks his friend Tyler is a creep for trying to marry his daughter off to a man 20 years older than her, thinking her dying in the Death Camp was better than going back to her nutcase of a father.
  • Flat "What": This is first reaction to Tyler ordering him to wipe out the superhuman kids before the end of the week as planned on Belos's advice.
  • Hypocrite:
    • And for all his talk about protecting the people from Quirk users, he had no problem ordering Quirkless kids and adults to Leave No Witnesses for his Project, something Luz calls him out on.
    • He also has a 3-year old son and a 6-year old niece that have Quirks, despite being dedicated to exterminating them.
  • Never My Fault: He tells himself that it wasn't his fault he had sex with an underaged girl, Arla's mother, because he was tempted by her outfit.
  • Noodle Incident: When he saw Greg, the governor of Texas, get lynched on live TV, he smiled believing deserved it for stealing $100,000 from him and called it “claiming what he owed from a bet”.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: He's also quite misogynistic towards what women wear.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Its all but stated it raped a young Mrs. Thatcher while she was his prisoner.
  • Revolvers Are Just Better: He has one to pull on the kids or insubordinate soldiers.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Maxwell's attempts to get Luz killed in his Death Camp to protect Gravesfield ends up turning her into that very threat.
  • Slut-Shaming: His excuse for raping an underaged Amy Thatcher.
  • Villain Ball: Instead of having them all killed via carpet bomb like Tyler and Belos ordered him to do, he decides to take the more sadistic route of having the parents of the superhuman kids kidnapped and held at gunpoint to motivative them to wipe out Luz and Alpha Squadron. This results instead with Luz stealing most of their Quirks after killing them and making her a future threat.
  • Virtue Is Weakness: Maxwell sees Luz's selflessness as the most annoying kind of goody-two-shoes: The staunch moralist.
  • Wham Line: In chapter 9, he gives a massive hint on who his benefactor above Tyler Wittebane is.
Maxwell: Stupid interdimensional dictator. Interfering with my fun…

Tropes that apply to the Original only

  • Consummate Liar: He was able to convince 2 of the teams to attack Alpha Squadron for extra money, later revealing to have lied about it to cover up his real goal, which is to completely wipe out kids with superpowers in his state.
  • The Gambler: The Governor sees himself as one, with him creating the Death Camp being his biggest gamble. He ultimately loses big time.
  • Greed: Exploited. Maxwell also adds the incentive of a cash prize of $1.1 Billion to the winning team so that they don't pull a Enemy Mine on him. Not that he had any intention on paying up.
  • Hypocrite: Governor Maxwell believes no one person should have so much power, despite a Governor of a State who regularly abuses his lately.
  • Indy Ploy: The Governor admits that the Death Camp he arranged is a half-baked plan. The Mass Super-Empowering Event was all sprung at him with no sudden warning, including Luz’s power. This whole thing was slapped together in a matter of hours.
  • Instant Wristwatch: The Governor looks at his wrist watch every now and again as the kidnapped teenagers collect their composure after hearing about the situation they're in.
  • Kids Are Cruel: Governor Maxwell has this opinion on children.
Kids were greedy like that. Money was money was money. Kids didn’t care the amount, pay’em and they’d do it. Morals? Who needs’em when you can be a billionaire? Rights? Pfft! What do human rights have to do with them getting rich?
  • Killed Offscreen: He is then confirmed to have been killed during the fight between Hunter and Luz by the massive explosion at the end.
  • Leave No Survivors: If the first round of intimidation when he rounded the superpowered teens all hadn’t worked, then the governor's Plan B would’ve just had to kill them all outright. Though he admits this would create new problems for himself.
  • List of Transgressions: When Governor Maxwell is arrested he's charged with enough crimes land him in prison for a life sentence.
Dr. Rodriquez: Governor Rodger Maxwell was arrested by the Military for, and I quote: Human Trafficking, Child Trafficking, Serial Murder, Domestic Terrorism, Endangerment of Children, first-degree manslaughter, Kidnapping, Money Laundering, Embezzlement, Fraud, and the list goes on for a country mile, so to save myself from reading a literal novel worth of crimes, I'll cut it short there.
  • Not Hyperbole: Governor Maxwell makes it explicitly clear when he says eliminate the other teams he doesn't mean so like in a game of tag. He means eliminated as in killed, wiped off the face of the Earth.
  • Stupid Evil: He really thought he could get away with kidnapping a bunch of kids without anyone wondering why they went. Also his plan to get Luz to snap and steal all the Quirks didn't seem to have a contingency if she survived the bombing and kill him next. The only reason she didn't was because he was arrested first.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: Governor Rodger Maxwell readjusts his plans as soon as he witnesses Luz use All For One viewing her as the perfect solution to contain the power boom that occurred which is leaving the government in shambles.

  • Forced into Evil: Camp Counsellor Johnson was being coerced by Governor Rodger Maxwell into helping him effectively kidnap the children with powers going to his camp to turn them into Super Soldiers for the government. He really didn't want to do it.
Camp Counsellor Johnson: I'm sorry, but I have no choice. Please, God, forgive me, because I'm sending these children to their doom…
  • I Have Your Wife: Johnson ultimately goes along with the Governor's orders because he can order the death of his wife and child, Masha, whenever he wants.

Team Alpha Squadron

    In General
  • Campfire Character Exploration: Luz and her team introduce and start to get to know each other around the camp fire outside their base. They later explain their powers to each other.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The half of Luz's team led by Julia are all brutally killed by the two enemy teams pulling an Enemy Mine on them.
  • Exposed to the Elements: Inverted and Defied. Luz and were being beat down by the 45 degrees summer heat, with Judy seemingly to had it the worst, wearing a thick leather cloak and long-sleeved shirt. Though Luz, being more used to the hot summers, is least affected.
  • Internal Reveal: In chapter 6, Luz reveals to her team that her Quirk is All For One and allows her to give and take Quirks from others. They take this better than she expected.
  • It Can't Be Helped: Luz notices her Nerves of Steel team seems to have this attitude towards their Death Game situation now.
Everyone seemed so… happy? No, not happy. No one here was happy. They were doing what it was that anyone in this situation would do. Coping. Coping at the fact that their families threw them away, unaware that they would be subjected to this. But even so, the act of throwing them away, it was something everyone here could at least relate to. They were doing the best that they could. And if moving forward was what would distract them from the truth, then she’d go along with it.
  • Let's Split Up, Gang!: One half the team; which includes Luz, Jean, Ronny, Stanley, and Judy goes out to get supplies. The other half stays behind to guard their base. The latter half gets ambushed and slaughtered.
  • Men Can't Keep House: Implied. Julia shuddered at the stench wafting off of some of those boys’ beds. She describes it as smelling like Satan himself took a shit all over them. She knew why they smelt that way, due to lack of showers, but that didn’t make it any less bearable.
  • Multinational Team: Let's see here: The Leader is an Afro-Latina American, her Number Two has White Anglo-Saxon Protestant heritage, one is of French descent, another member is Italian-American, another is Hawaiian and the rest appear to be atypical white Americans.
  • Shout-Out: The Alpha Squadron flag is based on the FBI flag from Call of Duty: Black Ops II.
  • Stunned Silence Luz's scouts are left in shocked silence when she reveals her Quirk could potentially be a Touch of Death power.
  • Teens Are Monsters: Defied; they soon prove to be perfectly nice despite the dangerous situation they're in and want no part in the killing game. They also point out how Luz's Power Parasite Quirk can help them live, instead of judging her for having it.
  • Thou Shall Not Kill: No one on Alpha Squadron wanted to even think about the prospect of spilling someone else’s blood, despite being in a Deadly Game. They agree only to do so when there are no other options.

Tropes that apply to Rewrite and Original

  • Affectionate Nickname: Julia tells Luz her friends call her Julie and its okay for her to call her that.
  • All for Nothing: Julia acknowledges that this could happen if the governor finds out she's been de-powered and could pull a You Have Outlived Your Usefulness on her or her parents still wouldn't take her back for being gay. Turns out this was played straight as they sent her to die there.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Julia Wittebane's whole community abandoned her to the streets all because she awakened a Quirk.

With Amity, she shares her background of being from a rich family whose parents are corrupt and abusive who wanted to control her entire life just like Odalia did.
  • Cure Your Gays: Julia's father tried to do this by making her read bible verses over and over again about how sex with the same sex was wrong. It didn’t change the fact that she liked girls.
  • Didn't Think This Through: When a concerned Julia notices that Luz doesn't look alright, she suggests that she should see a doctor. Luz snarks that the governor that kidnapped them wants them all dead so why would he provide them a doctor if they got sick? Also giving away her quirk did make her more vulnerable to attack.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Julia is horrified when All For One tells her Luz slaughtered her killers, not wanting her friend to commit murder in her name even if it was to avenge her murder.
  • Fatal Flaw: Low Self-Esteem: No thanks to her Abusive Parents' treatment, she always believing that she is never good enough for those around her that can also extremely self-destructive, willing to make any sacrifice to please them.
  • First Friend: Julia is the first friend Luz has ever made. Which is why she takes her murder so hard.
  • First Love: She later becomes this to Luz. Her's was called Rebecca.
  • Forced Out of the Closet: Julia's parents found out was that was a lesbian. How? Well, they caught her kissing a girl called Rebecca, and that sent them over the moon with anger.
  • Foreshadowing: During Luz's "Quirk Awakening", a vestige takes a more human-like shape than the other shadowy figures. In chapter 27, its revealed to be Julia's proving that vestiges can gain sentience in Luz's mind under certain conditions.
  • From Bad to Worse: Julia's parents became verbally and emotionally abusively towards when they found out she was a lesbian, then they out right disowned her and kicked her out of their house when she gained a Quirk from the Mass Super-Empowering Event. • Honor Before Reason: She gives her Quirk up to Luz, seeing them as thing that ruined her life, despite the fact she's in the middle of a Death Game and needs protection, something Judy calls her out on.
  • Idle Rich: Not by choice. Julia doesn't have much in the way of skills and abilities, due to being locked up in her house for the majority of her developmental years, beyond being exceptionally good at reading.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Luz, at Julia's request, takes her Quirk so that the latter can have a chance of her parents taking her back, and seeing her powers as a curse.
  • Incompatible Orientation: No matter how many male suitors Julia was given by her parents to marry for the rich clout, she refused them all. She didn’t like men, and that was final.

  • It's Quiet… Too Quiet: Julia thinks this after three whole days of no attacks from the enemy teams before she and the rest of her team are ambushed.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: Diplomatic, and caring, and overall the exact opposite of her father, Tyler Wittebane.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: She is gay and has a girly personality.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: The Wittebanes made sure their disowned daughter, Julia, knew nothing about their connection with Governor Rodger Maxwell, so that she would die in the Death Camp.
  • Meaningful Rename: Her surname is changed from Wittebane to Delmisso, her mother's maiden name, signalling her parents have disowned her, even after her death.
  • Mythology Gag: Her Quirk similar to Ibara Shiozaki's Quirk from Class 1-B, except she can't grow it from her hair, but instead her hands. They're also both practicing Christian girls.
  • Noblewoman's Laugh: Julia gives a chuckle version of this. Luz finds it cute (in a totally platonic sense!).
  • Not Quite Dead: Her vestige in Luz's Mental World has developed sentience and has not gone unnoticed by All For One, who speculates its because she was only person who truly vowed allegiance to Luz.
  • Number Two: Julia volunteered to be second-in-command to Luz, so that Luz doesn't feel too pressured. The Leader is so happy she hugs her for it.
Julia: Every good leader has someone to fall back on if they're heavily wounded or tired, right? King Arthur had Sir Geraint. So you can have me? Why not? Besides, I don't mind. It's not like you're forcing me to take up this role, in the first place.
  • Nerves of Steel: Julia, to Luz's surprise, can be this, given their situation of being abducted.

  • Rebellious Spirit: Julia had a rebellious phase towards her fundamentalist parents and it was because of that she was sent to Reality Check Summer Camp.
  • Riches to Rags: After being kicked out of her family manor, she spent the next two days living on the streets.
  • The Scream: Julia does this as Luz takes her Quirk away at her request, due how excruciating the process is. She compares it to being shocked by an electric chair at maximum voltage.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: With last two other team members deciding to pull a Do Not Go Gentle on their attackers, Julia tries to book it to warn the rest of the team... only to be murdered before she even comes close to reaching them.
  • Spock Speak: Julia's formal way of talking makes Luz ask if she's from a rich family. Julia confirms this.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Despite her status in the world, at least from the outside looking in, Julia is the type of person who would treat anyone with as much respect as she possibly could.
  • Stepford Smiler: When Julia smiles to Pastor Domenico, he tell easily she's upset.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: She has yellow eyes and is a Quirk user.
  • Tempting Fate: Just as Julia thinks things couldn't get worse than smelling the boy's dorm rooms, she and her team are attacked by the enemies with lethal results.
  • Token Religious Teammate: She is a devout Christian girl, despite all the bad things happening to her after the Mass Super-Empowering Event occurred. However, she started to dislike the concept of Christianity heavily thanks to her extremist dad.
  • Tranquil Fury: Julia is depicted with eyes glimmering in anger, repulsion, and fury; yet has a ever-calm expression that did not display any of that when first meeting the Governor. Luz envies that characteristic.
  • Undying Loyalty: Julia's last words were even if she did know where Luz was she wouldn't betray her friend and saviour, taking her secrets to the grave.
  • Vine Tentacles: Her power grants her controllable, thorny green vines grown from her hands.
  • Walking Spoiler: Its impossible to talk about her without mentioning her relationship with the Big Bad, how her death affected Luz, oh, and her vestige has formed in Luz's Mental World.
  • White Sheep: Julia was this in the Wittebane family, sans a remark or two for those who believed in witchcraft and magic, before they disowned her.
  • Worth It: Julia considers having her Quirk taken away to be this, despite how painful and dangerous the process is for her.

Tropes that apply to the Rewrite only

  • Berserker Tears: Downplayed. She cries angry tears when it sinks in her parents have disowned her.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Julia is a genuine Nice Girl but Luz points out, since her Quirk can carry over a ton in weight, she has the potential to be lethally dangerous.
  • A Birthday, Not a Break: She's kicked out of her house by her parents on her birthday no less.
  • Queer Colors: Her suitcase covered with stickers with two of the most prominent stickers were of the LGBTQ flag and the flag that specifically represented lesbians.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • She's on the receiving end, with Judy calling Julia stupid for giving her Quirk away to Luz and making herself the "weak link" of the team.
    • Julia soon becomes on the giving end to Luz, on the account of being too rough on Judy when asserting her authority on her.
  • You Just Told Me: When Luz asks Julia how she could tell she was lying to her, the Vines user basically gives this answer.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: Masha predicted she would die soon before she went off to summer camp. They were right.

Tropes that apply to the Original only

  • Blood from the Mouth: Julia does as she dies bleeding out.
  • Dying Dream: Julia's last thoughts while dying in pain are Luz’s bright smile and that she was glad she met Luz, despite the horrible circumstances around them. Its enough to bring her peace of mind.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: While trying to warn her other teammates they're under attack, Julia meets her end like this at the hands of Darlene's.Absurdly Sharp Claws In the Back.
  • Knocking on Heathens' Door: When asked to, Julia knocked on doors to spread the word of her God and Jesus Christ.
  • Oh, Crap!: Julia has a brief one when Luz reveals her Aura Vision lets her know she has a superpower.
  • Off with His Head!: Kennedy gives a post-mortem one to Julia for his sick kicks.
  • Prestige Peril: Julia mentions that being related to a rich oil tycoon leads to… well, perilous situations. With the Mass Super-Empowering Event, her father has been worried that perhaps some of the people who want them dead might have gotten some.
  • Self-Harm: Due to her lack of being able to do anything in the sole room that she occupied, she practiced self-harm as a means to pass the time, often cutting into her arms with dull knives she kept laying around.
  • Stuffed into the Fridge: Julia is this for Luz.
  • Super Gullible: She's very gullible and more than willing to sacrifice a part of her well-being should it please whoever she's trying to impress.
  • Tears of Joy: Julia does this while hugging Luz, thanking the All For One wielder for taking her powers away.
  • Wham Line: Not to Luz, but to the readers who have seen The Owl House and are familiar with Julia's last name knows who's related to her.
Luz: Names Luz! Luz Noceda, nice to meet ya, uh…?
Julia: Oh, right! Julia, Julia Wittebane of the former English noble family of the Wittebanes.
  • With Friends Like These...: All her friends ditched her when she gained superpowers and was kicked out of her house.

    Stanley Richardson

Stanley Richardson

Debut: Chapter 3/ Episode 3: The "Not-So-Dull" Summer Camp - Part 3

Quirk: Quirkless, Kinetic Absorption (Rewrite), Shock Absorption (Original) (Formerly)

An 18-year-old member of The Alpha Squadron. He's one of the nicer and more loyal members.

His Mutant-Class Quirk is "Kinetic Absorption" — the same one the USJ Nomu had in canon — it allows him to absorb blows of impacts done to his body.

Tropes that apply to Rewrite and Original

  • Ambiguously Brown: Stanley has tan skin but there's no indication what his ethnicity is, but is implied by Hilbert to be African-American or possibly mixed race.
  • The Big Guy: He's the oldest and most likely tallest member of the Alpha squadron, well-over 6 ft., having massive muscles large enough to make some professional bodybuilders cry, with the Super-Toughness to back it up. Its mentioned he can punch hard and break out of Amber's Force Push attack, despite not having Super-Strength.
  • Cigarette of Anxiety: He smokes to deal with stress at the orphanage.
  • Dumb Muscle: Averted, despite Amber and Hilbert thinking Stanley is this but is portrayed as a character with average intelligence.
  • Heroic Build: He's described as having a masculine physic of an Olympic track runner and has the personality to match. Luz wonders if its his natural build or the result of his Super-Toughness Quirk.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Stanley is described as having blue eyes and is a Nice Guy.
  • Mr. Fanservice: When Stanley returns to his team with his shirt off, Luz and Judy both are entranced by his impressive physic.
  • Nice Guy: Stanley is one of the nicer and more attentive members of his team.
  • The Scream: Much like Julia, Stanley does this as Luz takes away his Quirk away at his request.
  • Smarter Than They Look: Despite appearing to be all muscle and no brains, he's one of the more level-headed and mature members of his team.
  • Smoking Is Cool: He certainly thinks so, cancer or not.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Kennedy is this to Stanley for wanting to kill Luz for money, who were previously as thick as thieves and one thought the other was awesome.
  • You Got Guts: Stanley has this opinion on Luz for admitting that's she's super nervous to actually be leading a team, but will try her best to be a good leader. He tells her made the right call joining her.

Tropes that apply to the Rewrite only

  • Big Eater: Stanley can devour an entire moon pie in seconds. He mentions this is due to him being a competitive eater and it helps him bulk up his muscles with the extra protein.
  • No-Sell: This is a result of his Energy Absorption Quirk.
    • He could tank blows from Ronny's Super-Strength powered punch without budging or even flinching.
    • To everyone's surprise, Hilbert's Razor Wind Quirk does do squat to him.
Stanley: (Suddenly Shouting) YOU’RE GONNA HAVE TO TRY A LITTLE BIT HARDER THAN THAT, BECAUSE THAT SHIT DOESN’T WORK ON ME!
  • Not in Front of the Kid: Stanley uses this as one of the reasons why he doesn't flirt with Judy with the younger members of his team present.
  • Not So Above It All: At one point he makes out with Judy.
  • Pedestrian Crushes Car: Stanley first found out he had Super-Toughness when he got hit by a car, and instead of him going flying, the car flipped over him.
  • Rejected Apology: Played With. Stanley tries to apologise to Luz on behalf of Judy for her Jerkass behavior, but Luz rightfully tells him that if Judy really wants to apologize, she can say it to my face with her own mouth.
  • Say My Name:
    • He screams out Luz and Judy's name when the former is attacked by Cody and the latter is brutally killed by Lucas.
    • Stanley gives a horrified and more subdued one when Arla is murdered next.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: He sees Lucas, Amber and Hilbert killing Judy as this.

Tropes that apply to the Original only

  • Big Brother Instinct: Stanley has shades of this for Luz, as she reminds him of his little sister, Maria, which part of the reason he chose to join her team. He refuses to give her up to his former friend Kennedy. He's also the oldest in the team.
  • Bitch Slap: Stanley sends Kennedy flying into a tree with one of these after the latter tries to attack him. Its enough to draw blood.
  • Bring It: After he tanks Cody's attack, Stanley proceeds to laugh, start Knuckle Cracking and give a wordless look that says this, which encourages his teammates that they could take on their attacker working together.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Feeling guilty about not warning his team about Kennedy leading to some of them being killed, Stanley offers his Quirk to Luz.
  • Clothing Damage: Stanley only receives a singed shirt and pants from Cody's fire attacks thanks to his Shock Absorption Quirk.
  • Genre Savvy: Stanley tells Kennedy he's a fool if he thinks the governor is gonna pay up the cash prize after he hands Luz to him. Stanley's right on the money.
  • Freaky Is Cool: Getting over his initial shock, Stanley admits Luz's Power Parasite Quirk in action looked kinda cool.
  • It's All My Fault: Stanley has this reaction when he discovers that Kennedy had half his team killed because he refused to hand Luz over to him. This leads to him handing over his Quirk to her out of guilt.
  • Lovable Jock: Stanley was part of the same soccer team with Kennedy for years, and enjoyed playing basketball. He also refuses to sell out Luz to his Evil Former Friend and is an all-around genuine Nice Guy.
  • Muscles Are Meaningful: He's got a Heroic Build and is strong enough to overpower Kennedy who's Lean and Mean.
  • Nerves of Steel: Stanley Richardson shows this, being one of the first of the kidnapped kids to calmly question the Antagonistic Governor that orchestrated the whole thing, while most were too afraid to say anything at all.
  • No-Sell: Unlike Ronny who got burn marks littered on his arms, Stanley didn’t even flinch at Cody's flame attacks on him.
  • Personality Powers: Stanley has Nerves of Steel so its fitting he has Super-Toughness, giving him an equally tough body.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Had Stanley warned his team about Kennedy and his team being in their area, they would've been more prepared for the slaughter at their Home Base.
  • Punctuated Pounding: Stanley does this to Cody by repeatedly slamming his head into a tree until he's unconscious for trying to kill him and his team.
Stanley: HOW! ABOUT! YOU! SHUT! UP!
  • Screw the Money, I Have Rules!: When Kennedy approaches Stanley at night and attempts he tries to get him to betray Luz for a cut of the huge prize money. Stanley all but tells him to piss off.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: When Kennedy mockingly accuses Stanley of having a crush on Luz when he refuses to betray her, the unamused boy denies it, claiming she reminds him of his sister back at home. This likely due to the age-gap.
  • Smug Super: Averted for Stanley. Even with his Shock Absorption power, he believed his chances of surviving the Death Camp were low enough.
  • Super-Toughness: His Quirk, "Shock Absorption", allows him to absorb blows from attacks without any drawback to his physical body in a single blow. However, it can be worn down by the use of repeated, constant action applied at a constant rate, I.E. Weak to Fire.
  • Taking the Bullet: It takes a fire blast aimed at one of his teammates. Luckily, his Super-Toughness protects him from hit, only leaving minor burns.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Downplayed. Stanley briefly calls out Luz for using her Power Parasite Quirk on Julia at the risk of causing her brain damage. Luckily, after Luz explains to him that she informed Julia beforehand and it was consensual he accepts it.

An 18-year old member of The Alpha squadron. She's one of the ruthless members of the team.

Her Mutant-class Quirk is called "Spot", which can control the dark spots on her skin and put them anywhere. They can act as storage or as weapons.

Tropes that apply to Rewrite and Original

Tropes that apply to the Rewrite only

  • Adaptational Superpower Change: In the original story, her power was a Emitter-Class Quirk, "Darkness", manifests as a shadowy fire from her hands to be used to attack and hide in her shadow substance for stealth. In the rewrite, its called "Spot".
  • All Women Are Lustful: Unlike a blushing Luz who tries to hide it, Judy shameless admits she finds Stanley physically attractive with his shirt off and wants to make out with him after they escape the camp, much to the boy's surprise. They later make out.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: She has black and white skin color in splotches, like spots.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Her arms and hands get cut off as Lucas kills her.
  • Death by Adaptation: In the original works, Judy is one of the few survivors of the Death Camp. In the rewrite, she's the first Quirk user to be Killed Off for Real.
  • Didn't See That Coming: She certainly expect Luz the Nice Girl to physically discipline her with her new Quirk for speaking out of turn.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Judy acts very nonchalant towards her team about killing their prison guard.
  • Fingore: Her fingers get cleanly removed by Lucas as he kills her with his Razor Floss Quirk.
  • Good Is Not Soft: In the rewrite, Judy killed a Sociopathic Soldier just for shoving her to the ground and to steal his gun.
  • Jerkass: As noted by Luz, Judy can be a bitch most of the time.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: An incredulous Judy angrily points out to Julia that giving away her power made her has made her more vulnerable to attack in the Deadly Game they're in. While Julia protests that it was her choice, Johnny can't help but point out their Token Evil Teammate has a valid point.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: Luz remarks to herself that she sounds like this with Stanley.
  • Ludicrous Gibs: In chapter 9, she's turned into mince meat by Lyucas's Razor Floss Quirk.
  • Necessary Drawback: Luz speculates that her Quirk has a limited range when it comes to Thinking Up Portals. Otherwise, Judy would have already escaped the Death Camp by now.
  • Neck Lift: She's on the receiving end of this to Luz's Vines Quirk for her insubordination.
  • Oh, Crap!: In the remake, she has just enough time for this reaction before she is murdered.
  • Off with His Head!: When being reduced to barely pick-up-able chunks, the first body part to be removed is her head.
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: A stretch to call her a good guy but she still has no problems using the word "retarded" as an insult.
  • Portable Hole: Her superpower is called "Spot", the ability to manipulate the holes on her body and place them wherever she wants at any size, even midair, and travel through them to wherever else she wants, including hard to reach places.
  • Portal Cut: She does this to one unfortunate soldier with her shadow hole.
  • Quit Your Whining: Judy tells Stanley to stop complaining about the summer heat or she would start hurting him, but he just brushes it off.
  • Shout-Out: Her Quirk is the same power as Spot from the Spider-Man comics, as Stanley lampshades.
  • Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!: Judy believes Luz is being naive in thinking they could get through this Deadly Game without killing anyone. She's later proven right.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Judy is one that has the least quarrels about killing people and firmly believes that Virtue Is Weakness, especially in a Deadly Game. She even goes as far as to threatened to ditch the others if they "sabotage" her chances of survival and is the one that constantly butts heads with Luz, forcing The Leader to take a firm hand approach with her.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Angry at the thought Luz's leadership and Quirk not being being up to her standards will get them killed, Judy tries to attack only for Luz to be quicker on the draw with her new Vine Tentacles Quirk and lay down the law on the teen with Beware the Nice Ones on full display and almost dies from Sinister Suffocation.
  • Virtue Is Weakness: Judy points out to Luz that no one on the team is truly loyal to each other, having only just met each other, and survival is their primary objective. She also believes that having a Thou Shall Not Kill mindset will only sabotage them in the long run.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: She calls out Julia's decision to give her Quirk away to Luz as idiotic, as the former is now the weakest member of their team and the latter could've killed the girl with potential brain damage with her Power Parasite ability.

Tropes that apply to the Original only

  • Casting a Shadow: Judy's original Quirk is Darkness, it allows her to create a black, fiery substance from her hands. She can also shoot it out of her hands like projectiles that smash boulders apart.
  • Good Is Not Soft: In the original work, despite not wanting to kill anyone, Judy is still more than prepared to fire a Boom, Headshot! at an enemy with her Quirk to defend herself and her team. She's also the only one who advocates killing the unconscious Cody in a form of Paying Evil Unto Evil.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Plans to do this to any camper that tries to kill her first.
  • Shadow Walker: In the original story, she could hide in her shadow substance for stealth and bring other people into it.
  • Stealth Expert: Because of her Quirk, Luz makes Judy her Recon Commander. With her power, she can signal people to a targeted location and scout out the area. That, and she can hide in the dark, like camouflage, without being noticed_

  • Are We There Yet?: Ronny whines this to his team as they search for supplies in the scorching heat. Judy threatens to hurt him with her Quirk if he doesn't stop complaining, but luckily Luz breaks up the fight before it begin to get physical.
  • Big Eater: Apparently Ronny has quite the appetite. No one faulted him, since they hadn't had a decent meal in a while.

  • Goth: Dresses like one.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While rude, she wasn't wrong to point out to Cody that going Leeroy Jenkins on a fully-armed army is a really bad idea, regardless if they have superpowers or not.

  • Torso with a View: She gets several of these from the opposing team, which presumably killed her.

Hell, they have similar last names, hair styles and have an Italian theme.

The Alliance

    In General
After being promised a bigger prize money by the governor, Heaven's Devils and Foxtrot team-up to take down the Alpha Squadron.
  • All for Nothing: The Heaven's Devils and Foxtrot are wiped by a rampaging Luz (sans Emilia), the one they were promised $15 billion if they killed. Even if Kennedy and his alliance did manage to defeat her, the governor was never gonna pay up, he'd just have them killed too. In fact, he wanted this outcome to happen.
  • Asshole Victim: It's hard to feel sorry for the super-powered teen groups, Heaven’s Devils and Foxtrot, that took part in slaughtering half of Luz's teammates so that they could kill her for money, as she steals their Quirks before brutally massacring them in a Pay Evil unto Evil fashion.
  • Ax-Crazy: Some the kids in the Death Camp see the Deadly Game as an opportunity to use their powers in most lethal ways they can think of. Special mention goes to Kennedy, Darlene and Cody.
  • Barrier Warrior: One of them had the "Forcefield Projection" Quirk. It allowed the user to create a golden, circular, near-invincible forcefield in front and/or back of them from their hand that can withstand almost any kind of attack. However, it can only protect the user in one direction. Multiple powerful blows will slowly chip away at its absorption, like most absorbing Quirks. Alternatively, the user can shoot it as a projectile at a target, and the more power they have absorbed, the more devastating the blows from the forcefields become in the form of explosions.
  • Battle Amongst the Flames: Two forest fires break out due the "Flame" Quirk and doesn't die down even after the "battles" are over.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Their deaths at Luz's hands are brutal.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Throughout the chapter , the "fight" between Luz and the 20 other Quirk users of the enemy teams is very one-sided in the former's favor with only one escaping with her life because Luz let her. Its little wonder it would be called "The Massacre Of Fools".
To call what happened next a “battle” would be like calling the initial beginnings of D-Day to be a siege.
  • Deer in the Headlights: Kennedy mentally berates his colleagues for doing this when fighting Luz, despite being no better.
  • Dirty Coward: When the Heaven's Devils and Foxtrot realize Luz, their target, is more powerful than expected, most try to pull a Screw This, I'm Outta Here. They don't get far.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Luz notes that the 20 murderous kids were never going to see their parents thanks to her.
  • Feel No Pain: An Asian kid had the "Pain Nullification" Quirk that allows them to completely nullify any and all pain of any kind.
  • The Hunter Becomes the Hunted: The 2 teams at the Death Camp target Luz after being promises billions to kill her... she quickly turns the tables on them.
  • Hyperspace Arsenal: One of them had the "Deep Storage" Quirk that allows the user to store things inside of their body to release later on.
  • Light 'em Up: One of them possessed a Quirk "Scarlet Light" that allows the user to shoot a red laser that could set the target on fire, as Arla can attest to.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": The Heaven's Devils and Foxtrot quickly become terrified of the now murderous Luz. They soon regret their previous actions.
  • Mook Horror Show: Luz puts the Heaven's Devils and Foxtrot alliance through this.
Narrator: Catch, kill, steal, repeat. Ignore their pain, ignore their suffering. It was not worth her time to hear it. They brought this unto themselves. She knew it, they knew it, so why bother trying to change it? This was their fate, to die by her hand, and she was damn well gonna follow through with it. No more begging, no more pleading, none of it. This was her playground, and everyone else was fodder.
  • Not Quite Flight: One of them had the Quirk "Airwalk" which gave them the ability to float upward infinitely. However, the user can't move in any other direction but can, however, move downward. Propulsion using any other ability can be used to allow them to move in any direction they wish. But aside from that, it is only used to scale high surfaces.
  • Stronger with Age: One of them had the raw power of "Stockpile" allowed the user to gain physical strength over time. Considering that it only had a week of stockpiling power it wasn't much of a Super-Strength ability.
  • Super-Intelligence: One of the members had the Quirk "Hyper Intellect". It allows the user to temporarily enhance their intellect, at the cost of stripping away their emotions.
  • Super-Speed: One of them had the "Hyper Speed" Quirk which makes them run faster.
  • Teens Are Monsters: The teams Heaven’s Devils and Foxtrot slaughter 6 of Luz's teammates in order to win the $15 billion prize money from the governor qualify as this with Kennedy, the ringleader, being the most notable, who has no intention of sharing it and Darlene who actually enjoys the act of murder.
  • Victory by Endurance: One of them had the Quirk "Stamina Negation" which allowed them to negate all Stamina depletion. The user can never grow tired but this doesn’t make them The Sleepless.
  • Your Head Asplode: The ultimate fate of many foes at Luz's literal hands.

Team Heaven’s Devils

    In General
  • Avenging the Villain: Luz mocking asks the enemy teams if they want to avenge the two teammates she just killed. Daniel and Darleen try. "Try" being the keyword.
  • Total Party Kill: Not a single member of Heaven's Devils is left alive after Luz is through with them.

  • Lean and Mean: He's described as being thin as a stick, and has no quarrels masterminding murders.
  • Ludicrous Gibs: He's reduced to this by an All For One possessed Luz with his Finishing Move.
  • Mugging the Monster: The boy believed with 20 other powered kids backing him up that Luz would be easy pickings. He's soon proven to be very wrong.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Kennedy freezes in place and goes pale when Governor Rodger Maxwell tells him who he is and knows his name.
    • He becomes very afraid when Luz starts killing off his team.
  • This Cannot Be!: He has this reaction when Luz starts killing off his team one-by-one.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Kennedy honestly thought he and his entire team could take down Luz when she revealed herself to be a Power Parasite that has been Gaining the Will to Kill. The Curb-Stomp Battle against them ends in a near Total Party Kill with him not being the Sole Survivor.
  • Villain Has a Point: While acted as The Gadfly, he had a point telling Cody and Emilia and that shouldn't waste time fighting each other but rather try to figure who kidnapped them and where they are.
  • Villains Want Mercy: Kennedy, the ringleader of the massacre, does this when he's when Luz is about to kill him in chapter 12. He gets no mercy.

Tropes that apply to the Rewrite only

  • Biomanipulation: His Quirk "Cellular Manipulation" allows him to control, shape and manipulate any form of organic matter. For example, he frequently used it to control the ground and even turn a tree into a slide. if taken a step further, he can even ressurect dead people.

Tropes that apply to the Original only

  • Agony of the Feet: At the climax of chapter 13, Luz proceeds to stab Kennedy in the ankles with "Spear Fingers" to prevent him from escaping her wrath.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: Kennedy's Quirk, Pain Assurance, is this.
  • Blood from the Mouth: Kennedy spits up a glob of blood after being smacked into a tree by Stanley.
  • Death Cry Echo: Kennedy does this before he is killed by Luz.
  • Didn't Think This Through: He punches Stanley who has Super-Toughness when he refuses to hand over Luz. His former friend lampshades that he should've known that wouldn't have worked.
  • Freudian Excuse: Kennedy claims his family is dirt-poor, barely surviving off of scraps, and killing Luz for the governor was the perfect opportunity for a Get-Rich-Quick Scheme. This doesn't justify his actions at all.
  • Greed: Kennedy was willing to kill Luz and her team for billions promised by the governor that kidnapped them. He also had no intention of sharing any of it with any of his comrades.
  • Hypocrite: Kennedy believes that having half of Luz's team killed on his orders was just playing the rules of the Deadly Game that they were in, even if he admits it was overboard. Yet, he Ain't Too Proud to Beg in he's at Luz's mercy.
  • Irony: Kennedy grumbles he's always hated the Wittebane’s seeing them as a bunch of pretentious douches, not realising he's just desecrated the corpse of the White Sheep in the family.
  • It's All About Me: Kennedy planned to keep the prize money to himself after his team wins the game.
  • Jerk Jock: He was part of the same soccer team with Stanley for years, and enjoyed playing basketball. He's also willing to take part in the Deadly Game for money.
  • Last Disrespects: He gives Julia's corpse the Off with His Head! treatment before kicking it like a soccer ball into a nearby wall. There was no need for any of that.
  • Logical Weakness: Kennedy's Quirk only is only deadly when the targets have weak wills. Those that are confident in their defenses sustain little to no damage from his strikes.
  • Only in It for the Money: Kennedy causally mentions to Luz that he and his team because the Antagonistic Governor paid them a lot of money to do so. She doesn't take it well.
  • The Promise: Kennedy tries to invoke this to get Stanley to betray Luz. The pact was to help one another out, regardless of what was going on. Stanley refuses.
  • Psychotic Smirk: Kennedy has this when cutting off Julia's head.
  • Razor-Sharp Hand: Sharp enough to cut the head of a recent corpse.
  • Shatterpoint Tap: His power can also allow him to do this as well.
  • Smug Snake: Acts cocky and confident when things seem to be going his way. He honestly believes The Governor intends to honor his agreement to pay him billions for killing Luz, when reality the Arc Villain doesn't intend to let any of kids live. However, he gets easily angry and scared when things start to go south for him. When Luz starts wiping out his 22 strong team one-by-one in her Blood Lust fuelled Roaring Rampage of Revenge while stealing their Quirks for herself, he has a complete Villainous Breakdown and tries to abandon his comrades to try and save himself. He spends his last moments begging for his life, as Luz finishes him off once and for all.
  • There's No Kill like Overkill: Kennedy admits to himself that killing off half of Alpha Squadron was overboard. Luz's Finishing Move on the boy can be considered this.
  • Villain Has a Point: Despite being a greedy murderer, Kennedy isn't wrong about Wittebane family being a bunch of pretentious douches, which is later proven in later chapters with the introduction of Tyler.
  • Your Head Asplode: His ultimate fate at the Luz's Giant Hands of Doom.
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: His Quirk relied on the person’s understanding of pain. If the person Kennedy was going to attack understood that they were going to die, then Kennedy’s power would react to that, do the same amount of damage the person thought their attack was going to do, and put that damage into real life.

Tropes that apply to the Original only

  • Detectives Follow Footprints: While not a detective, Cody Johnson claims he found the Alpha Squadron by following their footsteps.
  • Determinator: Cody fought to the very end against Luz and her scouts.
The tension in the air was suffocating. A five-on-one fight was unfair, and everyone knew that. But even then, the sheer look of determination on Cody Johnson’s face was enough to send a chill down everyone’s spines. The fact that he was brazenly standing there without a care in the world, ready and raring to fight, was enough to scare Luz. Because that kind of determination meant he knew damn well what he was doing. Or, at the very least, he had confidence in his ability to make up for skill. Confidence went a long way, sometimes. Sometimes, confidence could completely change the way a fight worked.
  • Explaining Your Powers to the Enemy: Cody does this in chapter 10 with his Quirk. Luz (while Holding in Laughter) lampshades how he's acting like a stereotypical bad guy that tells the heroes their abilities that makes it easier for them to win. This arrogance costs Cody dearly.
Cody: HA! Nice try! I can morph my entire body into flames! There ain’t no way you can get me with weak-ass attacks like that!
Luz: (Thinking) Thanks for the info dump.
  • Pungeon Master: Downplayed. Cody states to the Alpha Squadron that they're toast as he launches a pillar of fire towards Jean.
  • Sarcastic Clapping: Cody does this when Jean points out he's an enemy calling him a smarty.
  • Starter Villain: He's first superhuman enemy Luz fights and has her team back her up.
  • Tap on the Head: Downplayed. Stanley has to bash Cody's head against a tree several times to knock him out cold.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Taking on Luz's whole team by himself cost him the fight, his Quirk and his life.
  • Why Won't You Die?: As he reaches his Villainous Breakdown, Cody screams this to the Alpha Squadron.
    Cody: Just. DIE. ALREADY!
  • Your Mom: This exchange in chapter 10.
Cody: (After being repeatedly kicked in the face) That was a cheap shot, asshole!
Jean: It was cheap for you to jump us, asshole!
Cody: Touché. However, counter-argument, YOUR MOTHER!
