The Tritagonists. A trio of UQ Holder's Numbers, who, despite a rough start with their fellow Number Touta, develop a close bond with him over time, becoming his Ministra Magi with whom he interacts the most.

    Shared Tropes
  • Age-Gap Romance: The three are considerably older than Touta. Kuroumaru is 10 years older, Kirie is around 15 years older, and Karin is over 2,000 years older. Since they're all immortals, it's not made a big deal.
  • All Women Are Lustful: The three come to lust after Touta and want to do erotic things with him despite their denials. After they don't see him for 45 years, the girls get very forward about their sexual desires for Touta as soon as they get a chance to put the moves on him in private.
  • Bathing Beauty: They all have lots of bathing scenes and as employees of a hot spring resort, they take dips in their off time. The cover of Volume 18 shows all three enjoying a hot spring bath.
  • Battle Harem: Kuroumaru is a Shinmeiryuu swordmaster with Healing Factor, Kirie has time-controlling powers including Mental Time Travel and Time Stands Still, and Karin has Nigh-Invulnerability and Holy Hand Grenade magic. The three develop feelings for Touta and form a Pactio with him.
  • Beautiful Tears: They all have scenes where they cry in front of Touta, causing Touta to sympathize with them more easily and he thinks they're cuter when they're vulnerable.
  • Chromatic Arrangement: Kuroumaru's card has a blue border, Kirie's has a yellow border, and Karin's has a red border.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Kuroumaru, Kirie, and eventually Karin don't like it when Touta is giving attention to the mortal girls who also like him. Karin is by far the worst as she initially wanted to kill Touta out of jealousy over him living with Yukihime for two years and later, wanted to attack Shinobu and Mizore when they didn't follow through with their bet of not interacting with Touta after losing the speeder race.
  • Covert Pervert: The three try to repress their lustful side, but they eventually can't hide their wishes to get lewd with Touta, even going as far as to bathe him and make out with him in his sleep.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: They acted unfriendly with Touta when they first meet him, especially Karin who even wanted to kill him for living with Yukihime, but they warm up to him as his kindness makes them fall for him.
  • Eternal Love: The three are immortals and develop feelings for Touta who is also immortal. Twelve thousand years later, Touta is still together with Karin and Kuroumaru.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: The meek and insecure Extreme Doormat Kuroumaru is Phlegmatic, the loud and bossy Tsundere Kirie is Choleric, and The Stoic Karin is Melancholic. That leaves the happy-go-lucky Idiot Hero Touta, their Magister, as the Sanguine.
  • He Is Not My Boyfriend: Even though everyone around them quickly notice how they feel about Touta, they still deny it when others say they have the hots for him.
  • I Am Not Pretty: Touta has called all three of them attractive, and none of them believe he really means it due to various image and bodily issues.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: The three had very lonely lives due to their immortalities. Kuroumaru was exiled from home, Kirie was neglected by her parents, and Karin had no one she was close to except Yukihime for over 2,000 years. They all start clinging to Touta because he'll give them love and acceptance unconditionally.
  • In-Series Nickname: In Chapter 185, Sepko calls the trio the UQ Girls Mutual Alliance.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Whether it be body, nature, or personality, all three of them have major problems with themselves. Kuroumaru is afraid that Touta is too good to even deserve having him as a friend, Kirie doesn't think Touta can find her attractive because of her unaging childlike body, and despite her insults towards Touta, Karin doesn't think highly of herself either because she was Judas and believes she always makes things worse when trying to fix them.
  • Letter Motif: The three have a given name that starts with the letter K. Coincidentally, Touta's surname, Konoe, starts with a K too.
  • Magic Contract Romance: The three become Touta's Ministra Magi through a Pactio that leads to them becoming closer to him. After 45 years of being separated, Touta takes them as his lovers and has sex with them.
  • Matchmaker Crush: Karin and Kirie want Kuroumaru to be Touta's girlfriend. Since Kuroumaru stubbornly stays in denial, Kuroumaru and Karin start pushing Kirie towards Touta even though Kuroumaru still has a crush on him and Karin is growing attracted to him too.
  • Ms. Fanservice: They're all attractive girls and tend to get stripped at the drop of a hat, especially Karin who has the largest chest in the story note .
  • Nice Mean And In Between: Kuroumaru is the nice one (polite, patient, and eager to help Touta), Karin is the mean one (aloof, possessive, and violent Yandere who hits Touta with her hammer a lot), and Kirie is in-between (bossy Tsundere who sometimes insults Touta and others is supportive of him).
  • Out of Focus: Whenever one of them is in the spotlight, the other two fall behind in panel time for several chapters. It was the most notable when the manga focused almost exclusively on Kirie and her interactions with Touta for a couple of arcs. Kuroumaru and Karin only got back into focus in the immortal hunters and Karin's flashback mini-arcs respectively.
  • Polyamory: After Touta sacrifices himself, Kuroumaru, Karin and Kirie made a deal that each of them will share Touta, as a Polyamory, when they met him again, Kuroumaru, the first to find him, gets to have sex with him, with the others getting their turns soon after. Touta, for his part, would have been happy with having sex with only Kuroumaru, but agrees to go through with the girls' deal nonetheless. Twelve thousand years later, the polyamory remains strong as ever.
  • Samaritan Relationship Starter:
    • Kuroumaru didn't want to get close to Touta because he's a vampire and Kuroumaru was an immortal hunter. After Touta tells Kuroumaru to forget about the immortal hunter clan that kicked Kuroumaru out anyway and stick with him forever, Kuroumaru gives in and develops a crush on Touta.
    • Kirie was already interested in Touta, but really fell for him when he promises to be by her side and never betray her. In the anime, she appears quite touched by Touta's frank declaration that he would never exploit her power for his own gain.
    • Karin begins to feel attracted to Touta after he fights off a Bolt of Divine Retribution to prove that she and Yukihime deserve to be happy.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: They all fall for Touta because he's a good-natured boy who cares about them.
  • Tears of Joy: They cry during their reunions with Touta 45 years after his Heroic Sacrifice.
  • The Three Faces of Eve: The sensible, even-tempered Kuroumaru is the Wife, the young-looking Tsundere Kirie is the Child, and sexy Ms. Fanservice Karin is the Seductress.
  • Town Girls: The girly Ojou Kirie is the Femme, the rough Tsundere with Boyish Short Hair Karin is the Butch, and the overall androgynous Kuroumaru is Neither.
  • Vampire's Harem: They all become the romantic and sexual partners of the vampire Touta.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Whenever they speak poorly of themselves, Touta tries telling them that he thinks they're all great girls as they are, although they continue having their doubts about it.

"I am the immortal Kuroumaru Tokisaka! Partner of the immortal Touta Konoe! Touta Kun! I will protect you for all eternity! "

Kuroumaru is a Shinmeiryuu swordmaster of a Demihuman species that remain gender-neutral until they choose one upon turning sixteen. As a member of a clan that hunts the undying, Kuroumaru was sent on a suicide mission to kill Evangeline due to being immortal themself, but upon losing to Touta in a fight, Kuroumaru agrees to be friends with them instead. Kuroumaru is accredited as the eleventh-strongest member of the Numbers.

  • 11th-Hour Superpower: In one of the last arcs before the final battle against the Lifemaker, Kuroumaru is taken away by the immortal hunters and made go through a ritual that transforms Kuroumaru into a living immortal-slaying sword with the power to rival godlike immortals like the Lifemaker.
  • A-Cup Angst: Kuroumaru expresses a bit of frustration that Sept's female form is quite buxom.
  • Adaptational Badass: A minor, but notable example. In the anime, Kuroumaru passes the test to join UQ Holder by taking one of Gengorou's lives, which is a bigger feat than any Kuroumaru's manga counterpart ever accomplished. However, Anime!Kuroumaru is not unsusceptible to The Worf Effect either.
  • Ambiguous Gender Identity: During early chapters, Kuroumaru insistently denies being a girl, but it's not clear whether Kuroumaru is physically male or merely wishes to be perceived as that gender. It is eventually revealed Kuroumaru is actually from a race who are born with No Biological Sex until they turn sixteen, after which they can choose. After the time skip, it seems Kuroumaru has taken a fully female body. However, Kuroumaru, keeps their masculine name rather than taking a female one, and still mainly dresses in male attire, while being more open to wearing dresses and the like. They also make a reference to the hair color changing when feeling 'fully female', all implying they may have come to see themselves as nonbinary or nonconforming.
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: Kuroumaru already looks pretty when dressed as a guy and makes for a total cutie when put in a dress by Karin and Kirie. Even Touta admits he finds "Kuryu" hot.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: A skilled Shinmeiryuu swordmaster who always wears a suit and tie.
  • Badass Longcoat: Kuroumaru wears a pretty cool black longcoat.
  • Bash Brothers: Subverted for the most part. Kuroumaru and Touta consider themselves battle buddies, but the occasions they fight together as a team are very few and minor since Kuroumaru can't keep up with a guy who has both Magia Erebea and Magic Cancel.
  • Beautiful Dreamer: Touta lovingly watches Kuroumaru's sleeping face as he strokes the hair right after they had sex.
  • Berserk Button: Kuroumaru is usually pretty calm, but especially early on, calling Kuroumaru a girl causes Kuroumaru to deny being one in a violent outburst.
  • The Berserker: Completely opposite to the usually mild Kuroumaru, upon awakening as a sword god, Kuroumaru flies into an uncontrollable fury and tries to destroy everything and everyone in sight. Touta needs to fight Kuroumaru without holding back to stop Kuroumaru's rampage.
  • Best Friend: Kuroumaru insists what they want is to be Touta's closest male companion, but Karin and Kirie tell Kuroumaru to give in to their romantic feelings for the boy. Despite admitting to have some feelings of attraction for Touta, Kuroumaru feels more comfortable with just being by his side as his closest friend, either as a boy or a girl.
  • Betty and Veronica: Both Kuroumaru and Yukihime have been teased with Touta throughout the manga. Kuroumaru is the Betty (steady, nice, and cute) and Yukihime is the Veronica (volatile, tsundere, and sexy). Kuroumaru is Touta's best buddy who he can count on for anything, but the downside is that Kuroumaru is so steady that they never really try to make romantic advances at Touta even after admitting they have a crush on him, effectively staying stuck being Just Friends with him. For most of the manga, Touta doesn't even consider Kuroumaru a love interest because he thinks Kuroumaru is a guy. Once he finally learns the truth about Kuroumaru's gender and crush on him, Touta's feelings for Kuroumaru start to turn into romantic.
  • Bifauxnen: After the 45-year Time Skip, Kuroumaru now is fully female, but still dresses in a masculine suit.
  • Big Brother Worship: Kuroumaru greatly respects Kiroumaru's power. Despite Kiroumaru being the one who kicked Kuroumaru out of their clan, Kuroumaru still loves him because Kiroumaru was a kind older brother in the past.
  • Birds of a Feather: Although they're Opposites Attract in personality, Touta made Kuroumaru his partner because he saw in Kuroumaru someone who like him, has no clear goals nor ambitions, only follows the flow, and was made immortal quite recently. After he hears Kuroumaru's brother told Kuroumaru to go to space someday, Touta tells Kuroumaru they should take a trip to space after the battle with the Lifemaker is over.
Touta: We both have nothing. So let's keep going together. As far as we can go.
  • Black Swords Are Better: The Hina-mori sword which is made Kuroumaru immortal and Kuroumaru is later turned into is a black katana. The immortal hunters say this katana is powerful enough to defeat the Lifemaker.
  • Bookworm: Kuroumaru spent most of their time reading books while growing up due to being sickly as a child.
  • Broken Tears: In Chapter 181, Kuroumaru breaks down in tears as she speaks to Touta about how hard it was to fight for 45 years without him.
  • Butt-Monkey: If something bad has to happen to someone, it'll most likely be Kuroumaru. Being victim of The Worf Effect time and time again, getting controlled by a pair of ghost enemies, people continuing to find out about their No Biological Sex to their mortification, Karin and Kirie practically bullying them into being a girl, and Touta remaining oblivious of their crush... Kuroumaru has by far the worst luck record early in the series.
  • Came Back Strong: In the immortal hunters arc, Kuroumaru's body is used as a sacrifice to forge a new Hina-mori sword. Almost immediately after the ritual, however, Kuroumaru transforms back to human form, but now has six white wings and the destructive power of a sword god.
  • Can't Catch Up: Kuroumaru's partnership with Touta is drastically downplayed because Touta keeps getting overpowered abilities and mastering them at absurd speed, leaving Kuroumaru in the dust next to him. Kuroumaru does get closer to Touta in power level after becoming a sword god and 45 years of fighting demons.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Kuroumaru doesn't dare to tell Touta the truth about their No Biological Sex and feelings of attraction towards him. The one time they have the guts to tell Touta they like him, Touta takes it in a platonic sense. Kuroumaru finally spits in out in Chapter 151.
  • The Champion: Since they have nowhere else to go, Kuroumaru follows Touta to UQ Holder and sticks to fighting for the sake of assisting and protecting Touta.
  • The Confidant: Touta notes he feels more at ease when talking about his feelings and insecurities with Kuroumaru than with any other of his friends, such as admitting to Kuroumaru that he loves Yukihime (in a familial sense) and wants to be acknowledged by Yukihime.
  • Cool Sword: Kuroumaru's clan possessed the sacred immortal-slaying sword Hina-mori, very similar to the demon sword seen in Love Hina and Negima!. Kuroumaru became immortal by merging with the sword's "soul". In Chapter 171, Kuroumaru is transformed into the Hina-mori sword itself.
  • Damsel in Distress: In the vs. Immortal Hunters mini-arc, Kuroumaru is captured by the heads of the immortal hunter clans who want to get back the Hina-mori sword that Kuroumaru "stole" by absorbing its spirit. The rest of the mini-arc is Touta fighting to save Kuroumaru.
  • Declaration of Protection: Kuroumaru repeatedly declares their wish to protect Touta. The thing is Kuroumaru believes they can only do that if they're a guy because they would be too weak if they become a girl.
  • Demihuman: Kuroumaru is from the Yata no Karasu tribe, a race of crow demihumans from Inverse Mars born with No Biological Sex.
  • Demon Slaying: Kuroumaru's skill set is designed to fight against supernatural threats like demons and ghosts. This is a problem when they end up being brainwashed by Sayoko because they're the one who can take out both Santa (ghost) and Touta (vampire).
  • Dismotivation: Kuroumaru admits to liking the way things are in their life now and don't have any active desire of making progressive changes in anything, especially their relationship with Touta. This is a result of their lack of ambitions or any interest in the future. Kuroumaru also has never known a better life than the one they got after Touta forced them to become his Best Friend, so Kuroumaru is terrified that trying to be more than that might ruin what they have. Eventually, they settle they're going to be satisfied no matter if they become a boy or a girl or if Touta falls in love with someone else as long as they can stay close to Touta like usual. Even after they do tell Touta the truth about their body and gender, Kuroumaru wants to keep everything the same despite Touta showing interest in dating Kuroumaru after seeing how cute Kuroumaru looks in girls' clothes.
  • The Ditherer: The wishy-washy type. Kuroumaru's crow demihuman race are sexless until they turn sixteen, at which point they can choose their gender. Kuroumaru keeps saying they will become male to be Touta's battle partner, but their crush on Touta keeps them from being firm about their decision. It really doesn't help how Karin and Kirie keep pressuring Kuroumaru to choose being female and date Touta. Kuroumaru spends almost the entire manga in a constant state of confusion and self-doubt about their feelings for Touta and how they tie into their gender identity.
  • Doppelgänger Attack: Kuroumaru is capable of splitting themself into clones when attacking.
  • Dork Knight: In Touta's own words.
Touta: Kuromaru's a good kid. Kind of a push-over, but strong and reliable. The best partner a guy could ask for.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: Played With. Kuroumaru has No Biological Sex, but is very insistent on being perceived as a guy. Just about every character keeps calling them a girl despite that, even those who know the truth about them, turning it into a Running Gag. It gets subverted when their body starts turning into female as a result of their attraction to Touta.
  • The Exile: The Tokisaka clan considered Kuroumaru's "cursed body" a disgrace to the clan. Kiroumaru sent Kuroumaru in a Suicide Mission to expel Kuroumaru from the clan and force Kuroumaru to never return home.
  • Expy Coexistence: Kuroumaru is basically the Setsuna Sakurazaki of this generation. Like Setsuna, Kuroumaru is a self-deprecating and easily flustered Shinmeiryuu swordmaster with black hair worn in a side-ponytail and an androgynous build. Kuroumaru is also a demihuman from a crow tribe that casted them out and they're embarrassed of having No Biological Sex like Setsuna was ashamed of her albino wings. Much like Setsuna, Kuroumaru is torn between wielding the sword to protect, or falling in love with a Konoe. Eventually, Kuroumaru becomes the Ministra of said Konoe like Setsuna did, gaining an Artifact that takes the form of multiple blades (similar to the one Setsuna got from Negi). In the latest parts of the manga, Kuroumaru becomes able to sprout white feathered wings, officially making Kuroumaru's profile identical to Setsuna's. Just to make it even more obvious, the Identical Granddaughter of Setsuna sees Kuroumaru as a role model.
  • Extreme Doormat: Kuroumaru has no self-esteem, drive nor goals, so they passively go along with whatever Touta and others say. Kuroumaru always lets people walk all over them and drag them into embarrassing situations like going to the public bath and being forced to wear dresses. Kirie calls Kuroumaru out on being a coward who chooses to run away and avoid their problems instead of facing them. When an arrogant prick like Nikitis calls Kuroumaru an "inferior lifeform" and demands Kuroumaru to address him with the "-sama" honorific, Kuroumaru immediately does so without protest.
  • First Girl Wins: Kuroumaru is the first immortal Touta meets after leaving his village and later, becomes his first Ministra. After the 45-year Time Skip, Kuroumaru is the first to find him and the first to have sex with him. Although Touta has sex with Karin and Kirie too because Kuroumaru made a deal with them, Touta had so much more sex with Kuroumaru that the number shocks Karin and Kirie. With this, Kuroumaru is declared the winner as Touta obviously has the strongest feelings for her.
  • Flowers of Femininity: Whenever they're forced into wearing dresses, Kuroumaru's hair is decorated by a flower ornament to emphasize their femininity.
  • Freakiness Shame: Kuroumaru feels highly ashamed of their No Biological Sex and doesn't want Touta to find out about it by any means, fearing it might turn him off. When Touta finally finds out, not only is he not bothered by it, he thinks it's something cool.
  • Friendless Background: Kuroumaru had no friends before Touta, which explains their attachment to the latter.
  • From Roommates to Romance: Upon joing UQ Holder, Kuroumaru and Touta were bunkmates in the company dorm. This closeness helped foster a genuine partnership, the two becoming close comrades, as well as laying the groundwork their eventual romance.
  • Gay Option: Subverted. Kuroumaru has No Biological Sex, but presents themself as male and is part of Touta's harem. Kuroumaru does have the option of becoming physically female later on and the process is already starting with growing breasts when Kuroumaru admits their crush on Touta.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Played With. "Kuroumaru" is a very masculine name, but it's used for a person is neither a boy or a girl despite looking and acting very feminine. Played straight after Kuroumaru does turn into a girl.
  • Gender Vocabulary Slip: When going on a "date" with Touta while disguised as Kuryu, Kuroumaru slips up by using the male first-person pronoun 'boku' in a moment of distress. Luckily for Kuroumaru, Touta got distracted and didn't question why Kuroumaru's "cousin" suddenly was speaking like Kuroumaru.
  • Green-Eyed Epiphany: With Touta proposing to Yukihime and the arrival of Shinobu and Mizore as love rivals, Kuroumaru gets pressured to admit they do like Touta and makes an attempt to confess before any of the other girls wins him over. The confession fails because Touta is the definition of Oblivious to Love and Kuroumaru is too spineless to try and pursue those feelings any further.
  • Growing Wings: In Chapter 170, Kuroumaru sprouts angel wings in reaction to the stimulation of Touta's Kiss of the Vampire.
  • Hartman Hips: Kuroumaru has a small chest, a narrow waist, and wide hips with big buttocks.
  • Healing Factor: Kuroumaru can regenerate damage dealt to their body. It's not as powerful of a healing factor as the vampiric type, but it's more flexible. However, if they take too much damage too quickly, they'll be temporarily crippled while his body hastily attempts to keep up with the damage.
  • Hero-Worshipper: After hearing that Jinbei has lived for over a thousand years with a considerably weak Healing Factor, Kuroumaru begins worshiping the guy, causing Touta to sarcastically note that if Touta is the kind that believes lies too easily, then Kuroumaru is the type to get swept up in cults.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Despite being a skilled swordsman, Kuroumaru has an extremely lowly opinion of themself and often worries that they might disappoint Touta by not being a partner good enough.
  • Hesitant Sacrifice: Kuroumaru, against Touta's protests, accepts to become a Human Sacrifice and be transformed into the sword Hinamori, to be used against the Lifemaker. Kuroumaru tries to be glad with remaining by Touta's side even as an inanimate sword. When the ritual begins, Kuroumaru mentally cries out for Touta. Fortunately, Touta manages to return Kuroumaru to human form.
  • His Own Worst Enemy: Karin recognizes Kuroumaru has the skill to be an excellent warrior, but Kuroumaru doesn't put their heart into swordsmanship and has no passions nor ambitions that drive them. Touta notices Kuroumaru was much stronger when mind-controlled by Sayoko, which implies Kuroumaru is at their best when not being held back by their self-doubts. This is best seen right after Kuroumaru awakens as a sword god and all inhibitions are removed, proving to be an even match to Touta at his strongest.
  • Hunter of His Own Kind: Kuroumaru is a member of a clan that hunts immortals, but because Kuroumaru was made immortal by some immortality experiments of the Tougen Shinmei School, their older brother sent them off after Evangeline and told them not to return until they killed her.
  • Hypocrite: Touta admits to Kuroumaru that he loves Yukihime (in a familial sense, apparently), but plans to give up on her. Kuroumaru berates him for it, telling him it's wrong to give up without a fight and he should try his best to pursue Yukihime now that he has realized how he feels about her. When Kuroumaru realizes their own feelings for Touta, Kuroumaru quickly gives up on pursuing Touta romantically without even trying, convincing themself that being Touta's Best Friend is more important.
  • I Am Not Pretty: Kuroumaru is convinced they will never be pretty enough to be an attractive girl. They probably have never taken a good look at themself in a mirror.
  • I Don't Want to Ruin Our Friendship: Kuroumaru is afraid that Touta might not want to be friends anymore if he knows Kuroumaru is not a guy and feels attracted to him. Kuroumaru realizes there was nothing to fear when Touta easily accepts both secrets after Kuroumaru confesses to him. Instead, Touta ends up being the one who wants to start dating Kuroumaru, but Kuroumaru is still too embarrassed to admit they want to be Touta's girlfriend. When they reunite after 45 years and Touta confesses his love to Kuroumaru, they become lovers.
  • I Owe You My Life: Kuroumaru's older brother kicked them out of the clan because of their "cursed body". Kuroumaru considers Touta their savior because if Touta haven't made Kuroumaru his sidekick, Kuroumaru would have been left with nowhere to go and no reason to live.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: While Kuroumaru eventually admits they have a crush on Touta, they're content with being nothing more than close friends with him forever. Kuroumaru claims they will give their blessing to whatever girl Touta falls in love with, but Kirie thinks Kuroumaru is lying to themself about their feelings. A bit later, Kuroumaru really seems to have given up on their crush and wholeheartedly supports the idea of Touta and Kirie becoming a couple. Except that Kuroumaru wasn't expecting at all that Touta would develop feelings for them after being told about Kuroumaru's gender deal.
  • I Will Wait for You: After Touta sacrifices himself to create a World Tree that can hold the collapsed Space Elevator in orbit, Kuroumaru spends 45 years waiting for Touta to return until he crashes on Earth and is found by UQ Holder.
  • Immortality: Kuroumaru has a cursed immortal body that can quickly recover any wounds as long as it registers.
  • Immortality Begins at Twenty: It's never explained well how Kuroumaru's immortality affects the aging process, but Kuroumaru obtained immortality at the age of ten and continued to grow into a teenager since. 45 years later, Kuroumaru still looks like a teenager so the aging process must have stopped at some point of puberty. The fact they were reforged into a sword god in their teens may expain why.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: When they try attacking Touta upon learning that he's a vampire, Yukihime pops up and slams a fist through Kuroumaru's gut.
  • Implausible Fencing Powers: After becoming the human form of the divine Hina-mori sword, Kuroumaru's sword attacks can cut mountains at a kilometer of distance.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Touta is by all accounts straight and can't think of Kuroumaru as anything more than a friend when he still thinks Kuroumaru is a guy. Touta finds Kuroumaru the most attractive when Kuroumaru wears girls' clothes and only starts developing feelings for Kuroumaru after learning Kuroumaru can turn into a girl later. This ultimately leads to Kuroumaru Jumping the Gender Barrier to get into a heterosexual relationship with Touta.
  • Inconvenient Attraction: Feeling strong attraction towards Touta gets Kuroumaru overly worked up because it conflicts with Kuroumaru's wish of being Touta's brother-in-arms. Things only get more problematic for Kuroumaru once their body starts turning into female on its own in reaction to their feelings for Touta. Not wanting to deal with this distress is why Kuroumaru tries to settle for being Touta's Best Friend, which Kirie calls running away.
  • Insatiable Newlyweds: When Karin and Kirie ask Kuroumaru how many times she did it with Touta, she reluctantly complies. Based on the others' surprised reactions to her answer, it's made clear that Kuroumaru had the most sex with Touta.
  • Just Friends: Kuroumaru has a big crush on Touta, but doesn't have the courage to try and be more than close friends with him so Kuroumaru suppresses their feelings of attraction. Touta is clueless to Kuroumaru's crush for the majority of the manga, but after Kuroumaru confesses, he starts finding Kuroumaru very attractive and at Yukihime's prodding, expresses his wish of dating a girly Kuroumaru. However, Kuroumaru turns down Touta's romantic gestures because they still don't want to admit they like being treated like a girl by Touta and Touta agrees to stay just partners with Kuroumaru unless Kuroumaru says otherwise. After being separated for 45 years, Kuroumaru drops the denial and becomes lovers with Touta.
  • Kaleidoscope Hair: Kuroumaru's hair color can change from black to blonde and back. Kuroumaru says it's a matter of "feelings", probably due to thinking Touta's type is blondes like Yukihime.
  • Lady of War: After Kuroumaru Took a Level in Badass during the 45-year Time Skip, Touta admires how beautiful and elegant Kuroumaru looks while swinging swords to cut down demons.
  • Light Girl, Dark Boy: Kuroumaru has black hair and wears black masculine clothes when they present themself as a boy. Kuroumaru's female persona "Kuryu" has blonde hair and wears a white and baby blue sundress. This was invoked by Kirie who tried to appeal to Touta's tastes by making "Kuryu" look like Kitty.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: It doesn't become obvious until way too late into the manga, but Kuroumaru is probably Touta's most important companion who he would never let go no matter what. Touta himself states he would turn hopeless if Kuroumaru isn't with him. After he's fused with a World Tree for 43 years and spends 2 years wandering Earth alone, just seeing Kuroumaru alive again is enough for Touta to recover from his state of despair.
  • Love Revelation Epiphany: A variation. In response to Kuroumaru's Love Confession, Touta says that out of all his friends, he likes Kuroumaru the best. Kuroumaru knows very well Touta is Oblivious to Love to the extreme and meant it in a platonic kind of way, but feeling joy from hearing Touta say that forces Kuroumaru to admit to themself that they do love Touta "like a girl loves a boy". However, Kuroumaru decides to not pursue these feelings.
  • Magic Misfire: Originally, the idea with Touta making a Pactio with Kuroumaru was that Touta got the card. Purely by accident, Kuroumaru became the Ministra instead. Not even Chamo is sure of why that happened and wonders if it's due to Touta's powers messing with the Pactio system.
  • Master Swordsman: Kuroumaru is noted to be very good with the sword for their age. However, Karin says Kuroumaru feels no passion for swordsmanship and doubts themself way too much, which keeps them from reaching their full potential. Towards the end of the manga, Kuroumaru becomes the human form of a divine sword and this combined with Kuroumaru's Shinmeiryuu fencing makes Kuroumaru almost invincible as she's wielding a sword, even when against a powered-up Touta.
  • Monster/Slayer Romance: Kuroumaru was raised by an immortal hunter clan and practices a sword style specialized in Demon Slaying. After being expelled from the clan, Kuroumaru falls in love with the vampire/demon Touta who Kuroumaru tried to exterminate in their first meeting.
  • Mr. Exposition: After UQ Holder travels to Inverse Mars, Kuroumaru delivers exposition for Touta about the Tougen Shinmei School that mainly hunts immortals that endanger humanity in the Magic World.
  • Naked First Impression: Kuroumaru and Touta first meet while bathing under a waterfall that they both had assumed was isolated. It's also a Mythology Gag since in two of Akamatsu's previous works the protagonist's girlfriend had her first meeting with him in the nude.
  • Naked on Arrival: Introduced while bathing under a waterfall.
  • Naked on Revival: In the immortal hunters arc, Kuroumaru is transformed into a sword to then resurrect as a sword god. Obviously, because Shapeshifting Excludes Clothing, Kuroumaru is completely naked during the revival.
  • Nervous Wreck: Kuroumaru gets overly nervous and embarrassed very easily, especially around Touta.
  • New Friend Envy: Kuroumaru gets anxious when Touta befriends Kaito and later, Santa. Kuroumaru is worried that Touta might think those guys are cooler and that'll make him become unimpressed by Kuroumaru. Karin and Ikkuu think Kuroumaru is acting like a girl who's jealous over her crush ignoring her to hang out with his dude friends.
  • Nice Guy: By far the most polite and well-adjusted member of UQ Holder. Kuroumaru is one of the very few people who never mistreats or insults Touta in any way.
  • No Biological Sex: Kuroumaru is a member of the same tribe as the Yata no Karasu, who don't have any sex characteristics until they reach the age of sixteen and decide on being male or female. Despite that, Kuroumaru grows breasts before reaching that age when their feelings for Touta make them self-conscious.
  • Objectshifting: Kuroumaru is briefly transformed into a sword in the immortal hunters mini-arc. After hearing Touta's voice, Kuroumaru turns back to humanoid form.
  • Oblivious to Love: Touta begins to have romantic attraction for Kuroumaru after their Pactio. Having resigned to being a Hopeless Suitor to Touta forever, Kuroumaru fails to notice that.
  • Odd Name Out: Kuroumaru is the only female Number who doesn't fit into the Temporal Theme Naming (Yukihime's name means "snow princess" which references winter, Karin's name has the kanji of "summer", and Kirie's surname Sakurame reminds of the cherry blossoms in spring). This may have something to do with the fact that Kuroumaru wasn't a girl at the start.
  • Older Than They Look: After the 45-year Time Skip, Kuroumaru should be about 60 years old and still looks like a 14-year-old.
  • One of the Girls: Despite (initially) identifying as a male and having No Biological Sex, both Karin and Kirie are comfortable with having Kuromaru bathe with them and treat them as if they were always female.
  • Open Secret: Kuroumaru's supposedly secret No Biological Sex is listed in their UQ Holder file and isn't that difficult to access. Basically, everyone who isn't Touta already knows about it.
  • Opposites Attract: Kuroumaru, who is demure, self-deprecating and prone to overthinking, is head over heels in love with Touta, who is happy-go-lucky, cheeky and rash.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Kuroumaru is a highly skilled Shinmeiryuu swordmaster, but sadly that doesn't mean much when Touta has Magia Erebea and Kuroumaru's abilities aren't that impressive compared to other Numbers too. Despite Kuroumaru's best efforts, Kuroumaru's fights always end with Kuroumaru being beaten to a pulp due to The Worf Effect. This issue is mitigated after Kuroumaru absorbs the power of the Hina-mori sword and reaches the level of UQ Holder's strongest after fighting demons for 45 years.
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: Despite being on the side of the good guys, Kuroumaru has displayed some notable misogynistic beliefs. The entire reason why they insist on becoming a man when they turn sixteen is because Kuroumaru believes women can't be fighters as strong as men and they can only be Touta's equal if they're also a guy, clearly suggesting being female would make them inferior. When Kuroumaru grows breasts, Kuroumaru suddenly finds themself helpless when they're attacked, with the reason being more than implied to be that Kuroumaru is convinced girls should let themselves be protected and only men are able to protect others. Kirie later points out the stupidity of this and makes Kuroumaru realize it was only an excuse so they wouldn't confront their feelings for Touta.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: After completely absorbing the Hina-mori sword's power and being transformed into a living divine sword, Kuroumaru's black hair becomes white.
  • Pretending to Be One's Own Relative: Kuroumaru pretends to be their own female cousin when they're put in a dress and forced to go with Touta on a date.
  • Prone to Tears: Kuroumaru easily cries Tender Tears when seeing or hearing something even a little emotional, like when Jinbei speaks about having friends who he outlived in his very long life.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Kuroumaru has long, black hair, pale skin and a face so pretty that it's hard for anyone to believe they aren't a girl.
  • Ready for Lovemaking: In Chapter 181, Touta falls asleep at the hot springs and when he wakes up, he sees Kuroumaru wearing nothing but a small towel over her breasts and sitting on a sexy pose beside him. Well, Kuroumaru's intention was only washing Touta's back and she actually got horrified when she came on to him in the heat of the moment. Touta ends up making love to her anyway.
  • Recursive Crossdressing: Kuroumaru's sexless body starts to mature into female after Kuroumaru admits to themself that they have a crush on Touta, but Kuroumaru continues to pose as male in front of Touta. In Chapter 101/Episode 6, Kuroumaru is forced by Kirie (Karin and Ikkuu in the anime) to put on a dress and go out on a date with Touta while pretending to be their own female cousin "Kuryu".
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The passive, insecure and introverted Blue Oni to Touta's energetic, boastful and extroverted Red Oni.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Girl: To their endless mortification, Kuroumaru is repeatedly dragged to the bath by other people or interrupted by someone when they're changing, which leaves their No Biological Sex exposed.
  • Sarashi: Kuroumaru's choice of underwear is bandages around the chest, as well as a Fundoshi (Japanese style of men's loincloth). While it's typical for Shinmeiryuu swordswomen to wear sarashi instead of bras, Kuroumaru doesn't actually need it due to lack of breasts... at first.
  • Satellite Love Interest: Kuroumaru has no goals or motivations beyond being "Touta's partner" and always goes wherever Touta goes. Even the matter of Kuroumaru's gender really amounts to whether Kuroumaru wants to be Touta's best guy friend or his girlfriend, rather than how it affects Kuroumaru's own person. At one point, this gets lampshaded by Kuroumaru themself when they sulk about how shallow they are for never doing or thinking about anything that doesn't involve Touta.
  • Second Episode Introduction: Due to the second chapter with Shinobu's introduction getting Adapted Out, Kuroumaru's introduction happens at the start of the second episode of the anime.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: After the Pactio with Touta in the nude, Kuroumaru loses any reservations about being seen naked and engages in Full-Frontal Assault several times. Kuroumaru also happily joins Touta in the bath, even hugging him while both are naked.
  • Shapeshifter Weapon: After being transformed into a living divine sword, Kuroumaru can draw swords out of their body and turn their limbs into blades.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Whenever someone takes off Kuroumaru's professional clothes and gets Kuroumaru dolled up, Touta is impressed by how pretty and girly Kuroumaru looks.
  • Shower Shy: Kuroumaru doesn't like to go into the men's bathroom because they're not used to bath with other people and they don't want others to see they have No Biological Sex. Oddly enough, Kuroumaru doesn't have that much of a problem with bathing along the girls.
  • Sickly Child Grew Up Strong: Kuroumaru had poor health as a child. When they were on the verge of death, the spirit of the sword Hina-mori let itself be absorbed by Kuroumaru to make Kuroumaru immortal. After that, Kuroumaru grew up to become a Shinmeiryuu swordmaster and later, a powerful divine sword in human form.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Regardless of identifying as a boy or a girl, Kuroumaru only feels attracted to Touta. It becomes even more apparent after the Time Skip; Kuroumaru was the only female Number who fought alongside the other Numbers for the past 45 years, yet showing interest in someone who isn't Touta never even crossed Kuroumaru's mind, always waiting for him until he comes back 45 years later.
  • Sleep Cute: With Touta after Their First Time in chapter 181.In a marked progression from the Sleep Deprivation incident below, Kuroumaru is now secure in their own feelings that they're able to comfortably sleep nude on Touta's own nude body.
  • Sleep Deprivation: After admitting to themself that they have a crush on Touta, Kuroumaru is so self-conscious about sleeping in the same room as him that they can't sleep.
  • The Smurfette Principle: At the start of the Time Skip arc, Kuroumaru is the only female Number who is still active because Yukihime, Kirie, and Karin got separated from the other members and/or sealed away by enemies.
  • Sobriquet Sex Switch: When disguised as their own female cousin, Kuroumaru goes by the alias "Kuryu".
  • Spell My Name With An S: Due to romanization differences, their given name can be spelt Kuroumaru, Kurōmaru or Kuromaru.
  • Straight Man: Kuroumaru often has to put up with Touta's goofball antics and tries to straighten him out when his naïve and trusting nature might get him in trouble, but it never works.
  • Strong and Skilled: In contrast to Touta who is Unskilled, but Strong, Kuroumaru eventually gains the great power of an immortal-slaying blade which combined with the Shinmeiryuu sword style makes Kuroumaru nearly unstoppable in a sword fight.
  • Subordinate Excuse: Kuroumaru appoints themself as Touta's aide because there's nothing they want to do other than staying by Touta's side and support him.
  • Targeted Human Sacrifice: In the vs. Immortal Hunters arc, Kuroumaru is captured by the Tougen Shinmei School because their body contains the spirit of the Hina-mori sword that the immortal hunters need to destroy the Lifemaker. Since Kuroumaru and the sword spirit have merged together, a ritual is performed to transform Kuroumaru's body into a new Hina-mori. Touta tries to go save Kuroumaru, but when he arrives, the ritual is already complete and he sees the blade created from Kuroumaru's body.
  • Through His Stomach: One of the many things Kuroumaru loves about Touta is his cooking, openly stating they want to eat Touta's food every day.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Kuroumaru spends most of the series either getting beaten bloody by the Arc Villain or going through the frustrations of being in love with a guy who defines Oblivious to Love. In the final arcs, Kuroumaru gains the power of a blade god to reach the level of UQ Holder's strongest and Touta confesses his love for her, immediately followed by lots of sex.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: Kuroumaru has a side-ponytail as part of being Setsuna's Expy and is treated as a Bifauxnen regardless of the No Biological Sex thing. Played straighter after Kuroumaru becomes a girl and still chooses to wear male clothing for battle.
  • Tomboyish Voice: Kuroumaru has No Biological Sex and presents themself as male at first, but their body later evolves into female as a result of having a crush on Touta. In the anime, Kuroumaru's voice can pass as either a teenage boy who hasn't broken his voice yet or a girl doing a slightly boyish voice. Kuroumaru does speak with a more feminine voice when disguised as their own female cousin.
  • Took a Level in Badass: After acquiring the power of a blade god and fighting demons for 45 years, Kuroumaru's power reaches a level acknowledged by Juuzou and Nikitis, two of the most powerful members of UQ Holder.
  • Touched by Vorlons: Kuroumaru became immortal because they came into contact with the spirit of the immortal-slaying sword Hina-mori. Tired of its immortal existence, the spirit gave up its immortality to Kuroumaru since Kuroumaru was dying from illness anyway.
  • True Blue Femininity: Kuroumaru's girl disguise "Kuryu" wears a sailor-style sundress with baby blue details and a blue bow.
  • Undying Loyalty: Kuroumaru swears eternal loyalty to Touta in a literal sense, wishing to be his protector to the end of time.
  • Unplanned Crossdressing: Kuroumaru inadvertently puts on a schoolgirl uniform that Karin prepared for them. Touta points out Kuroumaru should have noticed something was off from the moment they put the skirt on.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: With Touta. Kuroumaru has a big crush on him, but refuses to make a move out of many insecurities. For most of the series, Kuroumaru only stays getting all confused and flustered while Touta is Oblivious to Love. Eventually, Touta does show signs of reciprocating, yet all this does is making Kuroumaru start avoiding him out of embarrassment. Chapter 181 puts an end to their tension when Touta and Kuroumaru admit their feelings for each other and have sex.
  • Uriah Gambit: The Tokisaka clan sent Kuroumaru to kill Evangeline in order to get rid of Kuroumaru. And hey, if Kuroumaru managed to kill her, then that's certainly fine too. Touta beats and befriends Kuroumaru instead. Unknowingly to Kuroumaru, at least their older brother had good intentions by sending them on an impossible mission to Earth. The other clans of the Tougen Shinmei School want to get back a sword spirit that merged with Kuroumaru's body for their goal of eradicating world-threatening immortals like the Lifemaker. Kuroumaru's brother is disappointed to see Kuroumaru eventually returned to Inverse Mars only to be captured by the other immortal hunter clans.
  • Van Helsing Hate Crimes: After chatting casually with Touta and making friends with him, upon seeing his Missing Reflection, Kuroumaru instantly attempts to kill him. Kuroumaru comes around after Touta welcomes them as his friend, agreeing to join the side of immortals their clan hates.
  • Visual Pun: When Touta and Kuroumaru take each other's virginity, Kuroumaru loses the flower she had in her hair. In other words, she got deflowered.
  • Winged Humanoid: In the final stages of the manga, Kuroumaru gains feathered wings that sprout from the back as Kuroumaru's body further matures into a full girl. This was to be expected from Setsuna's Expy who also hails from a crow demihuman species.
  • The Worf Effect: If anyone is likely to be at the receiving end of a Curb-Stomp Battle to show how powerful an enemy is, it's usually Kuroumaru.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Kuroumaru is demure, softspoken, and kind, but shows a "core of steel" when the situation calls for it. After the timeskip, its revealed that Kuroumaru made sure that Touta had good accomodations aboard the Akashic Skywheel in the event of his return.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: Kuroumaru's older brother gave clear orders that Kuroumaru was forbidden from returning to their hometown Tougen in Inverse Mars if Kuroumaru failed to kill Evangeline. After being beaten by Evangeline's disciple Touta, Kuroumaru has nowhere to go anymore so they stick to going wherever Touta goes. And given that when Kuroumaru does return to Inverse Mars they are targeted by the immortal hunters and transformed into a sword, Kuroumaru was better off never going back home.

Karin Yuuki, UQ Holder No. 4

"My real name is a synonym for traitor. I'm the world's most famous sinner."

A member of UQ Holder and fourth-ranked member of the Numbers, who is cursed with the inability to be harmed or to die. Yukihime says that her form of immortality will probably leave her as one of the last people alive. Karin seems to hold Yukihime in high regard and hates Touta for being so close to her.

  • 13 Is Unlucky: She has a giant tattoo of the Roman numeral for 13 on her back. Fittingly, it's said that Judas Iscariot was the 13th to sit at the table of the Last Supper.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In the manga, Karin first appears when the Numbers go to greet Yukihime and the newcomers Touta and Kuroumaru at Fairyland Hall. In the anime, Karin arrives with the low-ranking members of UQ Holder to pick up and personally greet Yukihime.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: As Karin drifts in space for 45 years, she gets caught by the gravitational pull of the solar-type star, Rigil Kentaurus. She tries to pretend to stay calm as she knows falling into a giant fireball won't kill her, but as she contemplates how her immortality won't save her from feeling pain in that literal living hell, she has a big Freak Out. She tearfully begs for someone to save her even though she's light years away from Earth. Luckily for her, Touta arrives to her rescue.
  • And I Must Scream: In the Time Skip arc, it's revealed Karin took a teleportation spell from Ialda, which threw her into space at high velocity, where she has spent years all alone and unable to die because of her immortality. Right before Touta saved her, she was heading into a star, which would have incinerated her for eternity.
  • As the Good Book Says...: She can cast the spells of her Holy Magic by quoting The Bible, specifically Genesis 3:24.
  • The Atoner: She strives to do good in penance for her betrayal of her former master Jesus, though she fully believes that she is beyond redemption. Touta disagrees.
  • Barrier Warrior: She can magically raise barriers of light or create giant wings to stop a satellite from falling on UQ Holder's base.
  • Batman Can Breathe in Space: She doesn't need a spacesuit to survive in space. However, her brief trip to the moon shows that while she can't breathe, her immortality makes it a non-issue. She spends 45 years without oxygen and actually has to re-adjust to being able to breathe again.
  • Beethoven Was an Alien Spy: Judas Iscariot was really a cute teenage girl and she didn't die when she hanged herself, but obtained a divine-based Complete Immortality. In the 15th century, she fought in a war against Martian mage invaders alongside a fake High Daylight Walker vampire and a Japanese man who ate a mermaid's flesh. Centuries later, she joined a Society of Immortals lead by said fake vampire.
  • Belated Love Epiphany: Watching Touta sacrifice himself to save the Earth and 45 years of not seeing him (or any other living being) makes Karin look back more favorably on her past interactions with him and reflect on how much he's meant to her, and that causes her to admit she has feelings for him when she finally sees him again.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Being one of the more attractive members of the cast, Karin never bleeds or suffers any gory injuries unlike most of the rest of the cast. Unlike most examples of this trope, this is simply a side effect of her curse preventing any injuries to befall her.
  • Black Vikings: She's too light-skinned to look anything like a Middle-Eastern Jew.
  • Blessed with Suck: Being unable to ever be harmed or die from starvation and suffocation sounds cool, but it's not such a good thing for Karin when she can still feel pain and survive things like being teleported to space, staying stuck there for years with no means of going back to Earth.
  • Bloodless Carnage: Karin never bleeds because reality itself denies the damage done to her body. Even when Juuzou cuts off her arm and leg, there's no blood.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Her short hair fits her tough and aggressive personality.
  • Broken Bird: Underneath that tough exterior, there's a sad girl tormented by past mistakes she condemns herself for even after thousands of years, mainly her betrayal of her teacher Jesus.
  • Bungled Suicide: She tried killing herself via hanging after she betrayed someone very close to her (heavily implied to be Jesus). This was how she discovered her immortality.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: Touta lists Karin's huge breasts as one of her best qualities, Santa was impressed by how big they are and was disappointed to not find her measurements in her profile, and Jinbei complimented her naked boobs when they first met. Kirie also mentions that even she's interested in fondling Karin's breasts.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Karin's pride will never allow her to admit her feelings towards Touta. It takes her 45 years of isolation to confess that she does like him.
  • Can't Catch Up: Karin has lots of trouble keeping up with other Numbers due to her tendency to lose and be teleported away from the action. Adding insult to injury, she gets left even more behind after she spends 45 years lost in space while even her junior Number Kuroumaru managed to gain more competence as a fighter during that time skip.
  • Cartwright Curse: The three people Karin deeply admired ended up with tragic fates. Her teacher Jesus was crucified as a result of her betrayal. Yukihime was persecuted as the Dark Evangel by the higher ups of Inverse Mars and ends up becoming Ialda's vessel after Negi. Touta performed a Heroic Sacrifice by becoming a World Tree, willingly subjecting himself to same thing that separated her from Yukihime in the past.
  • The Champion: 600 years ago, Karin was Yukihime's most loyal follower in her cause to stop the evil Martian mages from taking over medieval Europe. After they won the war and Yukihime was made a notorious criminal by Corrupt Politicians, Karin only wanted to stay with Yukihime to the bitter end even though Yukihime was very vocal about wishing Karin to find her own path. Nowadays, she works for UQ Holder for the sake of continuing to serve Yukihime.
  • Characterization Marches On: Early chapters portrayed Karin as a cold, bloodthirsty Anti-Hero who didn't dismember her enemies only to not displease Yukihime. Following arcs have her turning more prone to Immortal Immaturity as the antics of the younger Numbers start rubbing off on her. Also, her character gradually loses her stoic Shameless Fanservice Girl traits as she becomes embarrassed and mortified in the scenes where she gets caught naked with Touta.
  • Chickification: In the early chapters, Karin is depicted as a fairly capable and experienced fighter while fulfilling her role as a senior immortal. Her first loss was caused by her being teleported to the moon, something that would put anyone out of commission. In the following arcs, however, she isn't as efficient because her enemies are stronger than she expected and find ways to disable her every time. She even starts the final arc needing Touta to rescue her after she once again got teleported to space and almost falls into a solar-type star while being unable to do anything but cry for help.
  • Commonality Connection: She eventually bonds with Touta over their shared circumstances. Both are staunchly devoted to Yukihime, and have a one sided attraction towards the girl she used to be, rather than who she is now. Both are separated from Yukihime via being sealed into a World Tree. When they reunite after the time skip, both talk about coming to accept their own insignificance and failings.
  • Complete Immortality: Her immortality is ranked at "Level S", surpassing any other type seen among the UQ Holder members. Karin's curse/blessing causes her to never age and any injury done to her body will be immediately retconned away.
  • Curse: Played With. People assume Karin's immortality is a curse that was placed on her as The Punishment she received from God for betraying her teacher Jesus. On the other hand, Yukihime believes Karin is blessed by a Guardian Entity who protects her out of love, albeit a twisted one. However, since Karin's Holy Hand Grenade is the power of human prayers, Touta theorizes that God has never cursed Karin nor rejected Yukihime when they attempted a Pactio, but instead the popular belief that Judas Iscariot was damned for betraying Jesus and Karin's own agreement to the idea are denying the death and happiness she wishes for.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Her hair and eye color are both black.
  • D-Cup Distress: Downplayed. She's usually indifferent to her large bust size, but at one point, she asks Touta if he doesn't like big breasts. This is after he's told her, under a Truth Serum, that he likes them a lot. Well, considering that all other of Touta's love interests have small breasts, Karin's suspicions about his size preference aren't unfounded.
  • Damsel in Distress: Early in the Time Skip arc, Touta travels outside the solar system to rescue Karin who has been helplessly stranded in space for 45 years ever since her defeat at the first battle against Lifemaker in Pluto.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Karin tried to hang herself for betraying her mentor and teacher, only to discover that she had been turned immortal because of her betrayal. She then spent many centuries wandering alone until she met Yukihime and her life got better for a while as she fought by Yukihime's side, but that came to an end when a High Daylight Walker sealed her inside a World Tree and even after being released, Yukihime didn't go to see Karin again until hundreds of years later.
  • Death Seeker: It's strongly hinted that the thing she really wants the most is for her life to end, though it probably never will.
  • Desperately Craves Affection: After 45 years of being deprived of any human contact, Karin is more desperate for warmth and affection than ever, causing her to persuade Touta to have sex with her soon after they reunite because that's how badly she wants proof that she isn't alone in space anymore.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Prior to meeting Evangeline, Karin basically didn't have any purpose in life and is quite happy when she thinks she's finally found one.
  • Dining in the Buff: Thanks to Touta, she has her first taste of food and water in over 45 years while naked in space.
  • Dream Reality Check: To make sure she isn't hallucinating, she pinches a naked Touta's cheeks the moment he arrives to rescue her in their 45-year reunion. After all, he's the first living thing she has seen in a very long time because she was alone in space for decades.
  • Dual Wielding: Her hammer in one hand and her katana in the other.
  • Failure Knight: Very long ago, Karin had a great teacher who she betrayed and to this day, she blames herself for his death on the cross. Karin wants to be loyal to a fault to Yukihime so she doesn't fail another master, but she doesn't believe she's doing a good job at it given that she wasn't by Yukihime's side at her biggest time of need, even if Ba'al is really the one to blame for that.
  • Faux Action Girl: Karin performs very poorly for a top-ranking member of UQ Holder and possessor of the immortality of highest level in the organization. She scores decent victories against two minor villains early on in the series... and that's her entire winning record. The rest of her fights have her getting so badly outmatched that it's like she's only around to lose and get stripped naked. Even Touta manages a victory or two against her. Eventually, Kirie and Karin herself start to lampshade just how useless she has been at battles ever since the end of the slums arc.
  • Flying Dutchman: The Wandering Jew variant. Her true identity is a female Judas Iscariot, the betrayer of Jesus. She became immortal after she betrayed her teacher and attempted to commit suicide. She believes it's her punishment from God to listlessly wander Earth for eternity without ever aging or being able to die.
  • Foil: To Kuroumaru. Both hated to become immortals and only wanted to die until they met a vampire who was nice to them, motivating them to devote their immortal lives to fighting for that vampire. Where they are different is that Karin is possessive and violently jealous towards Yukihime, feeling she deserves her attention more than anyone because of the hundred years she has devoted to adoring Yukihime and hating the mere fact that Yukihime lived with someone else for a couple of years. On the other hand, Kuroumaru's jealousy is completely inward and Kuroumaru doesn't want to compete with anyone for Touta, choosing to be content with being with Touta even as just a friend and wants to let Touta decide who he wants to be with.
  • Four Is Death: An interesting inversion of this. As No. 4, she's probably the only member of UQ Holder that cannot truly die.
  • Friend to All Children: Touta points out one of the rare occasions Karin smiles is when she's in the company of children, which he uses to assert she isn't the bad person she thinks she is.
  • Full-Name Basis: At first, she consistently calls everyone by their full name to show more distance. After some time of hanging out with the youngest immortals, she switches to First-Name Basis.
  • Has a Type: Karin has fallen for only two people in her very long life and both are powerful vampires who showed her kindness by telling her to value herself more.
  • Heartbroken Badass: She's a skilled fighter with Holy Hand Grenade magic and a Complete Immortality that makes it impossible to harm her in any way, but she still feels guilty and mournful over her part in the death of her beloved teacher Jesus even after over 2,000 years have passed.
  • Hero-Worshipper: She first met Yukihime when the latter was chasing off evil Martian mages that were trying to take over medieval Europe. For that, Yukihime is the most amazing savior of Earth in Karin's eyes.
  • Heroic BSoD: Karin gets seriously depressed after she learns she can't make a Pactio with Yukihime because the entity giving Karin her immortality is apparently rejecting Yukihime.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Karin's opinion of herself can be summed up in four words: "I am the worst."
  • Historical Domain Superperson: Her real identity is Judas Iscariot and she's holy power wielding immortal.
  • Historical Gender Flip: She's a female version of Judas Iscariot.
  • Historical Hero Upgrade: Given this interpretation of her real identity, she seems to specifically take after the portrayals of Judas who betrayed Jesus solely out of desperate fear of the backlash his movement would cause from the Romans and quickly regretted the betrayal.
  • Holy Hand Grenade: She has holy-element attacks as part of her "curse." It's the first clue that her immortality is a blessing, not a curse; if it was a curse, she wouldn't have access to that type of power. However, according to Karin, this power doesn't come from God, but from human prayer.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Yukihime sees Karin as a good subordinate and old comrade, but doesn't have any romantic feelings for her since Karin can't hold a candle to Nagi, Negi and Touta in Yukihime's heart.
  • I Let Gwen Stacy Die: She's burdened with guilt for indirectly causing the death of her teacher over 2,000 years ago by selling him to the authorities of Jerusalem that then had him crucified.
  • If It's You, It's Okay: She acts like she has Single-Target Sexuality towards Yukihime, but Touta's Chick Magnet charm might be getting to her more than she would like to admit. It gets to the point where she's willing, with some initial hesitance, to make a Pactio with Touta, and even embracing him when he attempts to break off the kiss when he thinks the backlash of "God's rejection" is hurting her.
  • Ignored Enamored Underling: Karin has a massive lesbian crush on her boss Yukihime. Meanwhile, Yukihime's treatment of Karin ranges from another subordinate at best, a clingy old acquaintance in any case. To make it worse for Karin, Yukihime doesn't have the slightest romantic interest in anyone who isn't a Springfield male anyway.
  • Immortal Immaturity: Karin is over 2,000 years old and while she usually tries to act serious, she behaves like a clingy lesbian with a crush on her Hot Teacher when it comes to Yukihime.
  • Immortality Bisexuality: In the over 2,000 years that she has lived, Karin has fallen for two vampires, one female and one male.
  • Immortality Hurts: It is impossible to injure her, but she still feels pain where the injury would be. In 1492, she was suspected as a witch and was subjected to various tortures before finally being burnt at the stake, and her form of immortality means that while she was not physically damaged, she felt every excruciating second.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Karin adores Yukihime to no end, but Yukihime has only ever been shown to be attracted to men, specifically those of the Springfield family.
  • Iron Butt-Monkey: Because Karin's immortality is the trickiest, the Arc Villains take the most extreme measures to get her out of the way fast. She repeatedly falls victim to teleportation spells that send her to very troublesome places, including the moon, underground, and outside the solar system where she slowly crosses the Despair Event Horizon from 45 years of isolation. The first two cases are used to some comedic effect, but not the last one, for obvious reasons. She even spent 140 years trapped inside a World Tree to separate her from Yukihime.
  • Jerkass to One: Karin is aloof when dealing with people who isn't Yukihime, but she's especially nasty and hostile towards Touta because Karin wants to kill anyone who might be closer to Yukihime than her. After being drawn in by his kindness and making a Pactio with him, she softens up to him.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: Has a katana strapped sideways on her back.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: Her flashback shows her wearing a ballgown during the war against the invader mages of the Magic World.
  • Kryptonite Is Everywhere: Every foe, knowing about her Complete Immortality, make sure to remove Karin as a threat first and foremost. As a result, Karin has rotten luck with the enemies she faces, because they always have some way to immobilize her or keep her away from the battle.
  • Light 'em Up: She uses very powerful Light-based attacks.
  • Love at First Punch: About 600 years ago, Karin challenged Yukihime to a duel, of which the latter came out victorious after subjecting Karin to Mind Rape. Impressed by the sorceress's strength, Karin decided to follow Yukihime and she has been the object of Karin's adoration ever since.
  • Loving a Shadow: Similar to Touta, Karin's feelings for Yukihime seem to be based on the notion of who the sorceress was hundreds of years ago instead of the way she's in the present day.
  • Lust Object: Xingzai Chao pretty much confesses he wants to keep Karin as a toy for his sick sadism games.
  • Mad Love: Karin worships Yukihime like a queen and would do anything for her. She's also ready to murder anyone who might receive Yukihime's affections. In return, Yukihime is still fixated on the Springfield men and doesn't ever seem to think of Karin as anything but a subordinate.
  • Magic Knight: Karin primarily fights with weapons but has tremendous magic powers should the name arise.
  • Meido: She wears a maid outfit when working at the inn.
  • Modesty Shorts: She wears cycling shorts under her skirt.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She lost it when she saw her teacher's dead body on the cross after she sold him out. Her overwhelming guilt over the death of her master threw Karin into suicidal despair, but her immortality activated and didn't allow her to die.
  • My Greatest Failure: Despite all the time that has passed, she still takes her betrayal of her teacher Jesus hard and sees it as proof that no matter her good intentions she's doomed to just make things worse. She feels she also failed Yukihime by not being able to be there for her back when everyone was hunting her down. Karin doesn't even care that it wasn't that she wanted to leave Yukihime alone since a High Daylight Walker trapped her inside a World Tree and even after she was released, Yukihime didn't bother to meet Karin again until UQ Holder was founded.
  • Naked First Impression: As a result of Clothing Damage courtesy of Ba'al, Karin was completely naked during her first meetings with Jinbei and Juuzou.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: She states she's not "permitted" to be hurt or die. Even if a knife is jammed into her chest, she remains unharmed.
  • Not Quite the Right Thing: She claims to have sold her teacher out because she honestly thought that was the best thing to do due to circumstances at the time. It's possible she did it with the idea that she was protecting her people in Jerusalem from the Romans. She realized too late that her betrayal did nothing more than kill a man who preached love and tolerance in the cruelest way possible.
  • Not So Above It All: She usually tries to act like the "adult" due to her role as The Older Immortal among the rookies. She still does silly things like putting Kuroumaru in a schoolgirl uniform and making Shinobu and Mizore run around Fairyland Hall's island while naked after both lose in the speeder race against Kirie.
  • Not So Stoic: Early on, she acts as the unfazed type to show that she has lived long enough that nothing shakes her anymore. Later on, her interactions with Touta start making her more overtly emotional as she gets embarrassed and sentimental in front of him. And although she normally doesn't show much reaction to pain, she can't help but scream in horror when she's in danger of falling into a solar-type star.
  • Oh, Crap!: She looks like she's going to shit herself when she's about to fall into a solar-type star because she knows her immortality will keep her alive as she burns in that inferno.
  • The Older Immortal: She's one of the oldest immortals in UQ Holder, surpassing even Yukihime (700) and Jinbei (1400). Since she's all but outright stated to be Judas Iscariot, Karin should be at least over 2,000 years old.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Besides her immense guilt, Karin has a hard time forgiving herself and moving on from having betrayed her teacher Jesus when that's the one thing she's remembered for in history. At one point, she laments how there's even books such as The Divine Comedy that describe her being damned to Hell for her betrayal.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Karin is just a name she gave herself; she probably doesn't want to be called Judas anymore.
  • Pair the Suitors: With Touta. Both have a one-sided attraction towards Yukihime who is currently unable to move on from Negi. Karin tries to make a Pactio with Yukihime first, but it fails. Karin ends up becoming Touta's Ministra instead.
  • The Paladin: In the 15th century, her clothing and fighting style were reminiscent of a wandering knight and she could use her Holy Hand Grenade at the maximum to overpower evil Martian mages.
  • Pals with Jesus: Karin knew Jesus on a personal basis back in the day. In fact, she was one of his disciples until she went and hanged herself after betraying him.
  • Perpetual Frowner: At first, she constantly has a serious frown on her face and only smiles in front of children. She starts loosening up in later chapters.
  • Please, Don't Leave Me:
    • When a fugitive Eva wanted to part ways around 500 years ago, Karin tearfully begged her to let her stay with her or at least form a Pactio with her so they could still be connected. Eva refused because she believed Karin needed to find her own life away from her.
    • When it appeared Touta was leaving her all alone in space so soon after their 45-year reunion in Chapter 182, she goes into a panic attack, begging him not to leave her. Touta reassures her he won't.
  • Post-Kiss Catatonia: Very much justified. To form a Pactio with Karin, Touta has to use his Anti-Magic to fight off a Bolt of Divine Retribution, which keeps coming back stronger. It ends with Touta and Karin being blasted naked and both pass out from exhaustion.
  • Power Gives You Wings: Through advanced application of her holy magic, Karin can manifest angelic wings complete with a Holy Halo.
  • Psycho Lesbian: The first thing Karin does when she learns that Touta lived together with Yukihime is to swear she'll kill him. Yukihime points out Karin behaves like someone madly in love. Since Touta is immortal and a fellow Number, Karin has to change her plans to getting Touta a girlfriend to keep him away from Yukihime. She still goes quite crazy when she hears Touta was Yukihime's First Love via Time Travel.
  • Public Domain Character: Everything Karin says about her dead teacher and how she discovered she had become immortal after she failed to die after hanging herself indicate she's Judas Iscariot.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: The black-haired, fair-skinned resident Ms. Fanservice.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Despite looking like a teenage girl, Karin is over 2,000 years old.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Karin delivers one to Kuroumaru after the latter reveals their No Biological Sex, telling them they have no hope of ever being a partner Touta will value because they have no drive or ambitions which Touta can be drawn to. Karin's intention is to make Kuroumaru give up their plans of becoming a man and instead become a girl who can hook up with Touta.
  • Red Baron: The Saintess of Steel, due to her Nigh-Invulnerability. Some translations also include "The Stainless Sinner", probably a jab aimed at her past as the betrayer of Jesus.
  • Regretful Traitor: She used to follow a great man's teachings, but ended up betraying him and felt so guilty about it that she tried to hang herself. If that sounds familiar, said man is indirectly confirmed to be Jesus, making her Judas Iscariot from The Bible. Even over 2,000 years after the fact, Karin is still plagued by grief and guilt over her betrayal of her teacher.
  • Rei Ayanami Expy: Pale-skinned girl with bobbed hair who is The Stoic, has an obscure Dark and Troubled Past, is extremely devoted to her boss who happens to be the protagonist's parental figure, usually doesn't show much concern about being seen naked, has a rare immortality of divine origin that gives her a Holy Hand Grenade, and eventually warms up to the protagonist.
  • Religion is Magic: Her Holy Hand Grenade powers are fueled by human prayers.
  • The Resenter: The reason why she's such a jerk to Touta is because Karin can't stand how he has gained so much of Yukihime's favor with such little time and effort thanks to his lineage. Comparatively, Yukihime is mostly aloof towards Karin even though the latter has stayed unquestionably loyal to her for 600 years. This gets worse when Karin finds out Touta had the "privilege" of meeting Yukihime's teenage self and being her First Love via Time Travel, which means Touta was more special to Yukihime even before Karin ever met her. After learning Touta's origins and the role Yukihime played in it, Karin realizes she's been too harsh on Touta, and softens her stance on him.
  • Retcon: Early in the manga, Xinghai Chao told a story about Karin being captured and tortured by some villagers towards the end of the 15th century until Yukihime rescued her. Eventually, this was ignored in favor of Karin fighting alongside Yukihime in a war against Martian mages that lasted from the ends of the 15th century to the beginnings of the 16th century.
  • Retconjuration: Her immortality works on this. Instead of having a Healing Factor like Touta and Yukihime, whenever Karin's body is injured, reality instantly rewrites itself to make her come out unharmed.
  • Reused Character Design: Physically, she looks identical to Madoka Kugimiya and the short-haired Motoko from the final volumes of Love Hina.
  • Satellite Character: Most of Karin's role and characterization boil down to Yukihime's slavishly devoted subordinate. Even when she starts interacting with Touta more, she never gets to be much of her own character, with the event leading to her Pactio being all about her backstory with Yukihime.
  • School Uniforms are the New Black: Karin is usually dressed in a Mahora Academy schoolgirl outfit. She got it for a covert mission at Amano-Mihashira Academy City a few years back and has kept it since just because Yukihime told her she looks good in it.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: The reason she's absent from Yukihime's backstory as seen in Negima is because the High Daylight Walker they thought they defeated on Mars returned after 120 years and, to bypass her holy powers and immortality, planted a seed in her body that trapped her in a World Tree up until the Industrial Revolution. She only reunited with Yukihime 10 years before the present.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Downplayed. Karin does not care one iota about Clothing Damage during a fight because beating the enemy is a higher priority in her mind. She does start to get annoyed when Touta makes a habit out of it and tries to cover herself up in more comedic moments.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: For Touta and either Kuroumaru or Kirie. She tries to convince Kuroumaru to choose to become female and pair up with Touta and then later switches to shipping Touta with Kirie because she believes that Touta and Kirie's joint time-manipulation ability will work better if they are dating. Both of these ships are probably also related to her desire to keep Touta away from Yukihime.
  • Shrouded in Myth: When she confesses her true identity as the infamous biblical traitor Judas Iscariot to Touta, Karin states the story about her and her teacher that has been passed down to the modern day is virtually nothing but gossip, although she does believe people are right to think badly of her for selling Jesus.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: She admits to her shower assailant that she's a hypocrite for trying to help out others despite having a harsh past, but then tells him she's the master of her own destiny. Cue a Holy Fist in the hunter's guts.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: Karin acts very mean, rough and cold towards everyone except Yukihime, seeming like a Jerkass towards Touta especially. When she finally opens up to Touta, Karin admits that she never forgave herself for unintentionally getting her teacher killed and failing to be there at Yukihime's darkest point in life.
  • Space Isolation Horror: After being defeated during the first battle against Ialda at Pluto, Karin ends up stranded alone and naked in space where she does nothing but float aimlessly for 45 years as she breaks from the despair and isolation. As if that wasn't bad enough, she gets caught by the gravitational pull of the solar-type star Rigil Kentaurus, leaving her unable to do anything but freak out and scream in a void where no one can hear her cries for help. To her luck, Touta arrives right in time to rescue her and bring her back to Earth.
  • Stalker with a Crush: In a very ironic parallel to Yukihime and Nagi, Karin became obsessed with Yukihime after the latter beat her in a duel and kept following her around everywhere she went for over a century. She wasn't chasing after Yukihime up to the time of Negima because Karin lost track of her after being trapped inside a World Tree about 500 years ago.
  • Stone Wall: She was granted with the most durable kind of immortality that doesn't allow her body to be injured. In terms of offense, however, she's nothing special unless she brings out her Holy Magic (which she rarely does) and it's hard for her to leave significant damage in her opponents.
  • Subordinate Excuse: From shortly after they met, Karin has been following and serving Yukihime because she wants nothing more than to be useful to her.
  • Sue Donym: Her apparent full name, "Ist Karin Haute", is in fact a pseudonym that when spelled out together, sounds similar to her real surname "Iscariot".
  • Super-Strength: She was able to easily block Touta's gravity sword on 2000 times gravity.
  • Targeted to Hurt the Hero: She was victim of this in her backstory. The evil High Daylight Walker Ba'al decided the best way to get Evangeline to fall into despair was taking away the only person in both worlds who still cared about her: Karin. Ba'al knew it was impossible to torture or kill Karin because of her form of immortality, so he force-fed her a seed which immediately grew into a World Tree, leaving Karin trapped inside until she was freed 140 years later.
  • Tastes Like Friendship:
    • After beating her in a fight, Yukihime offered Karin an apple and told her she should be glad she can still enjoy the taste of food despite her immortality. Karin interpreted this as Yukihime telling her she was worthy of living, which sealed her eternal adoration for Yukihime.
    • In chapter 182, Touta brings her first food and water in over 45 years. The simple tastes she's been deprived of after so long brings her joy. She then eats while Touta chats with her, rekindling their friendship.
  • Tears of Blood: She's shown shedding these in her flashbacks of the time she saw her teacher crucified and she tried to unsuccessfully hang herself afterwards.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: It took her a difficult Pactio and suffering 45 years of isolation in space, but she finally stops threatening to kill Touta and starts acting as another smitten teenage girl around him.
  • Transflormation: About 500 years ago, Ba'al force-fed a magic seed to Karin which instantly made a World Tree grow from her body. The spell wasn't broken until 140 years later.
  • Troubled Fetal Position: As she's abandoned in space for decades, a stark naked Karin is shown hugging her knees as she sinks in her depression and loneliness.
  • Tsundere: Her stubborn pride keeps her from admitting any positive feelings she might have towards Touta. Even after Karin herself recognizes she might be taking a liking to the boy, she puts an impressive amount of effort into trying to make it look like she still hates him to death.
  • Two First Names: The name she currently goes by, Karin Yuuki, has a false surname that can be used as a given name, but is still a valid surname.
  • Undying Loyalty: Literally. Karin's devotion to Yukihime hasn't wavered in 600 years. Even after Yukihime made herself into the enemy of two worlds, Karin was the only person who never wanted to leave her side.
  • Virgin Vision: When she meets Touta for the first time in 45 years, Karin can somehow tell Touta already had sex with Kuroumaru without him mentioning it. She uses this to persuade him to do the same with her.
  • When She Smiles: She allows herself to smile when looking after children. Touta points out she looks kinda cute and in return, he gets smacked in the head by Karin's hammer.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: For thousands of years, Karin has wished she could die, but it's impossible for her to take her own life or for anyone to kill her.
  • The Worf Effect: What better way to demonstrate a villain's power, cunning, and/or strategic mind than to remove-from-action a mighty mallet-wielder who cannot be harmed in any way?
  • Wrestler in All of Us: She locks Touta in wrestling moves as he tries to persuade her into making a Pactio with him. She stops because Touta was liking the feeling of her boobs and thighs.
  • Yandere: She wants to kill Touta for living with Yukihime for two years as the boy is clearly not worthy of her master, and should be punished for being so close to her.

Kirie Sakurame, UQ Holder No. 9

Kirie Sakurame, UQ Holder No. 9

Voiced by: Ai Kayano (JP), Amanda Lee (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kirie_gold_pactio_card.jpg

UQ Holder's largest financier and ninth-ranked member of the Numbers. Though she looks quiet and meek in public, in private she's aggressive and hostile. She has the ability to set what she refers to as a Save Point ahead of time in order to avoid death.

  • A-Cup Angst: Kirie stopped her own aging process at 13 years old, but came to regret it when she realized her body will never develop curves now. She's so hypersensitive about this that Touta calling her breasts small makes her cry like a baby.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Given several changes in the anime storyline, Touta spots Kirie making a Save Point before her proper introduction when they go to the Space Elevator together like in the manga.
  • Aggressive Submissive: Kirie is a domineering Tsundere who usually bosses Touta around and calls him incompetent all the time. When she has sex with him, however, he already got way too much experience from lots of sex with Kuroumaru and to a lesser degree, Karin. Kirie ends up as a flustered mess while a nonchalant Touta has his way with her. After the fact, Kirie feels irritated that Touta never let her take the lead during sex.
  • Ambiguously Bi: While she has a rather obvious crush on Touta, she seems to enjoy fondling Kuromaru as she grows up, and even expresses an interest in feeling up Karin.
  • Catchphrase Insult: She typically calls Touta "the Incompetent."
  • Cherry Blossom Girl: Her family name is Sakurame, wears a hat with cherry blossom flowers decorations, is associated with death and rebirth because of her power to turn back time whenever she dies, and becomes a Love Interest to the protagonist.
  • Combat Clairvoyance: Her Reset & Restart power has a special function that gives her advantage in combat by letting her make an instantaneous Save Point with the flame in her finger. With this, Kirie can effortlessly dodge all of her enemy's attacks with ludicrous timing because said attacks already killed her and she perfectly memorized the pattern, which is how she gets the upper hand in her fights against Cutlass and Sept Shichijuurou Nanao.
  • Compassionate Critic: She presses both Yukihime and Kuroumaru to stop being dishonest about their feelings for Touta because sorting out their relationships with him will be the best for both parties involved. She also criticizes Karin for losing or being teleported away from almost every fight so Karin can think of a way to start being useful.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Yellow hair to match her yellow eyes.
  • Damsel in Distress: In the Cutlass' infiltration arc, Kirie is taken hostage by Cutlass who also destroys Kirie's Save Point to force Touta into a Sadistic Choice of either sacrificing millions of innocents in the Space Elevator or losing Kirie probably forever. Yukihime kills Cutlass to save Kirie and make Touta focus on saving the civilians.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Kirie's parents were so neglectful that she died of starvation when she was only four years old, causing her to discover her Mental Time Travel ability. Afterwards, as she used her power, she saw the darker, nastier sides to people who seemed nice at first. This made Kirie reluctant to fully trust anyone until Touta came along.
  • De-power: When Touta finally finds her in the Time Skip arc, Kirie reveals that not only she lost her Reset Button abilities, but is no longer The Ageless as a result of sacrificing the source of it to Dana to fuel her travel back to her original world. While she still possesses her magic, she is, by her own words, no longer an "ageless immortal".
  • Death-Activated Superpower: Her powers activate the moment she dies, regardless of the circumstances. She also reveals that her powers first activated when she was only four years old.
  • Death Is Cheap: When given a lethal attack, she will die, but instead of staying dead she will go back to the moment of her last Save Point. Pretty much any time Kirie does something cool, the implication is that she either died in a previous attempt or literally committed suicide an untold number of times to memorize what she needs to do. Without a save point though, she'll presumably go back to the point where it first activated at the age of 4.
  • Deus Exit Machina: Because her Mental Time Travel is such a Story-Breaker Power, the final arc starts with Kirie being knocked out by a mutual cancellation of abilities caused by the Demon Barons so Kirie can't undo their terrorist attack at the Space Elevator. Then, she gets sent to another dimension to prevent her from helping in the fight against the Demon Barons for the next 45 years. When Touta finally finds her, Kirie has lost her Mental Time Travel ability and isn't immortal anymore, making it impossible for her to join the final battle.
  • Dirty Kid: Downplayed somewhat because she's likely far older than she appears, but she's still familiar with pornography and the like.
  • Dislikes the New Guy: She doesn't like Touta becoming one of her fellow Numbers, claiming he's too much of an incompetent idiot for it. She also loudly disapproves of Santa joining UQ Holder because his crazy girlfriend tried to destroy the world and Kirie accuses Santa of planning to do the same.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: UQ Holder becomes way too reliant on Kirie giving them an easy way out with her time resets. For the sake of higher tension in the final arc, she's forced to lose her ability and her immortality, reducing her to a regular mage that's unable to participate in the final battle.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: She drowns her sorrows in food and drink after she spies on Touta's date with Yukihime.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: After she uses her instantaneous save point system to dodge all of Cutlass' attacks, Santa compares the exhausted look on Kirie's eyes to the one a gamer would have after staying up all night while trying to beat a Nintendo Hard game on the highest difficulty.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: After the 45-year Time Skip, Kirie cut her Girlish Pigtails to give herself a more grown-up look because she has grown into a teenager after losing her immortality.
  • Flowers of Femininity: She wears a beret with flower decorations. This shows off her status as an Ojou and the most feminine of the female Numbers.
  • Fourth-Wall Observer: She is aware that the series publication frequency was changed from weekly to monthly in Chapter 135.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She styles her hair into a long pair of twin braids, which makes it easy to identify her as the childish Tsundere she is. She loses the pigtails in the final arc, after growing into a teenager.
  • The Glasses Gotta Go: She doesn't wear glasses anymore after she loses her immortality and grows into a teenager.
  • Go Through Me: She stands in front of Negi-Lifemaker and his minions to protect Touta, knowing that they won't kill her as it would activate her Save Point.
  • Greed: Her favorite pastime is entering the stock market to become even richer.
  • Hates Being Alone: Due to her past experiences, she becomes scared of solitude, more so while she and Touta got stuck in frozen time, so much so she actually asked Touta if she can sleep with him.
  • Hero of Another Story: Before joining UQ Holder, Kirie went on an Immortality Seeker quest to find a peach of immortality and traveled all over the world until she found it. We only know this when she tells Touta about it, though. Also, near the end of the manga, she spent the time in the parallel world fighting off creatures that dropped from her original world to the parallel non-magic world she fought in for a few years before finding Dana to make the witch send her back to her original world. She admits to Touta that her adventures would probably fill up five volumes of manga.
  • Hesitant Sacrifice: When Kirie finds her save point wrecked by Cutlass. She retorts at knifepoint that her powers still work even without the save point. When it dawns on her that a reset of that scale will undo everything, including all the good times she had with Touta up to that point, she panics as Cutlass brings the knife down. Touta reassures her that there's no need for that, as he'll put a stop to Cutlass's plans.
  • Hikikomori: Implied to have been one before meeting Touta. During her introduction, it's mentioned Kirie rarely left her penthouse suite. According to Kirie herself, she originally had the intention of shutting herself off from the world until her crush on Touta changed that.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: While she has come to terms with the fact that she's smitten with Touta, Kirie doesn't expect Touta to choose her as his definite favorite since she's satisfied enough with knowing he truly cares about her. When Touta wants to date Kuroumaru, Kirie doesn't have any problem with it and tells Touta to date anyone he wants with no need to ask for her permission.
  • Immortality Hurts: Downplayed. While she won't stay dead, she tells Touta death is still a very painful experience for her. However, Kirie admits she's already used to the pain of dying so often; she was more annoyed about getting killed by a creepy psycho six times because Touta didn't protect her.
  • Immortality Seeker: Her Mental Time Travel ability allows her to avoid death, but her body originally could age like a normal human. She tells Touta that, before joining UQ Holder, she traveled around the world in search of the last peach of immortality left in the world. In the end, after being sent to a non-magical Earth, Kirie throws her immortality away to make Dana send her back to her original world, all just to see Touta again.
  • Inconsistent Coloring: Kirie had light pink hair and eyes in early promotional pictures for the manga. Ever since her proper introduction, coloured illustrations depict her with golden hair and eyes.
  • Informed Loner: Kirie is stated several times to be distrustful of people and this supposedly makes her isolate herself from everyone in UQ Holder, but from the moment she's introduced, she's always hanging out with her fellow Numbers. She only acted grumpy towards Touta in stereotypical Tsundere fashion and was never once shown to distrust or keep her distance from anyone, even acting quite playful and sociable with Kuroumaru and Karin.
  • Little Miss Snarker: This little girl has a habit of making snide remarks about the colorful nature of her comrades at UQ Holder.
  • Logical Weakness: Her Mental Time Travel ability will only make her go back to her save point if she dies. Therefore, anything that prevents her from dying is her ultimate weakness. Fate deals with her by turning her into stone and Sayoko infects her with a zombie virus that leaves Kirie under her control. During the fight against Fate, however, Kirie brought a de-petrifying magic app because she knew what Fate was going to do to her, though the app itself had a delayed activation.
  • Magic Kiss: By kissing Touta mouth-to-mouth, she can freeze time and start it again. It's unknown why it only works with Touta; everyone chalks it up to The Power of Love.
  • Mayfly–December Romance: After the Time Skip, Kirie feels sad that losing her immortality means she'll be eventually outlived by Touta. However, she's happy enough with knowing Touta will come to see her even when she's an old woman. She still comforts herself with dating him for a week before he leaves for the final battle.
  • Meido: Yukihime forces her to work as a maid at Fairyland Hall as punishment for running off the headquarters to follow Touta.
  • Mental Time Travel: Her power sends her mind and memories back in time to her latest Save Point like in a videogame. By touching other people at the moment of her death, she can also send their consciousness back along with hers.
  • Mission Control: Since her combat abilities aren't as strong as those of the Numbers and her death only resets time, she occasionally watches the mission from a screen while the other Numbers handle everything. This is her role in the final battle since she can't participate due to becoming a regular mage after losing her Mental Time Travel ability.
  • Mundane Utility: She uses her Mental Time Travel powers to make money at the stock market. She also used it to gain advantage on the speeder race and cheated her way to the goal with it several times.
  • My Nayme Is: Her name in Japanese is written with the archaic katakana "we" ヱ, instead of the usual "e" エ. It's reflected by a diaraesis on the "e" in some translations.
  • The Napoleon: She's very tiny, but Touta is surprised by how terribly cranky and nasty her personality is.
  • Never Got to Say Goodbye: Due to being unconscious at the time, she was the only Number unable to bid Touta farewell as he performs his Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Never My Fault: Kirie gets killed by Xingzai Chao six times and blames Touta for failing to protect her in every loop until she managed to bring him back in time with her by making him touch her at the moment of her death. Nevermind that Kirie, as the one with the Mental Time Travel power, is the one who should have warned Touta about the psycho that would attack them instead of wasting time in petty things like demanding Touta to let her step on his face six times as payback for something that hasn't even happened for him yet.
  • Not Afraid to Die: Kirie has already died so many times that death is nothing but a temporary inconvenience for her. She frequently kills herself without a second thought.
  • Not Growing Up Sucks: She ate a peach of immortality because she wanted to stay young forever. She came to regret doing this after she realized she's now permanently stuck in the body of a preteen and will never grow breasts. She's thrilled when Dana transforms her into an adult with huge breasts. After she gives up her peach of immortality to Dana, Kirie can now grow normally, but is a bit bummed out that this also means she won't be able to live forever with Touta.
  • Ojou: Her wealth is said to be in the "hundreds of billions", and she lives in UQ's penthouse suite.
  • Older Than She Looks: It's pointed out that she's actually somewhere around 19 (older if you consider time spent in "resets"), she just intentionally stopped the aging process when she was 13.
  • Open Secret: Her reset power is supposed to be treated as a top secret only to be revealed in an emergency, but Kirie's careless abuse of her power soon makes everyone around her aware of it. Eventually, even the villains know about Kirie's ability from the get-go and take precaution against it.
  • Parental Neglect: Her parents neglected her to the extent that she literally starved to death as a child, which led to her Death-Activated Superpower kicking in.
  • Playing with Fire: Kirie has some affinity for fire magic.
  • Please, Don't Leave Me: When Touta considers taking advantage of the time freeze to climb the space elevator, Kirie pleads him in tears to not leave her all alone in a world where only the two of them exist.
  • Plot Device: Kirie's role in the story mostly revolves around being a living Reset Button used to move the plot along and have a "Get Out of Jail Free" Card whenever there's a villain causing tremendous property damage and casualties.
  • Plot-Relevant Age-Up: During the 45-year Time Skip in the final arc, Kirie gave up the peach of immortality that stopped her aging at 13 years old, leaving her as a normal girl that can properly age. When Touta meets her again, Kirie has grown into a teenager that matches his physical age. Although, instead of being relevant to the plot, her age-up is just so Touta can have sex with her without the manga turning into child porn.
  • Post-Kiss Catatonia: When testing Kirie's newfound time freezing ability, Touta kisses her on the lips over and over again until Kirie looks like she's about to collapse.
  • Protectorate: She becomes this to Touta, who promises to always be by her side to protect her.
  • The Quiet One: When she's first introduced, she mostly keeps to herself and lets others talk for her. She drops the façade once alone with Touta, and has promptly abandoned it ever since.
  • Randomly Gifted: Her unique Mental Time Travel power isn't something that she acquired through magical means. She's an ability user; someone with inborn skills that can't be learned by others.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Girl: She's very annoyed when she has to wear a bikini to compete against Shinobu and Mizore in a race. To Kirie's bigger indignation, her ending up partially or completely naked in public and right in front of Touta soon becomes a common occurrence.
  • Retroactive Precognition: Most of UQ Holder think that Kirie can see the future because she accurately foretells things that will happen. In truth, she can't predict the future, but remembers her previous "tries" because of her Save Scumming. According to Kirie herself, she didn't realize the truth about her abilities for quite a while and actually assumed that she was having nasty prophetic dreams.
  • Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory: The workings of her Save Point allow her and whoever she takes back in time to keep the memories of what happened before she died.
  • Satellite Love Interest: As the series goes on, Kirie's role becomes limited to being Touta's Plot Device assistant that turns back time to help him overcome obstacles more easily. Very little defines her characterization outside of being a Tsundere with a crush on Touta.
  • Save Point: The exact nature of her immortality; she lits up a small fire, after which she mutters "Save Point". This allows her to respawn back in time at that particular mound (along with anyone who touches her when she dies), essentially creating a miniature "Groundhog Day" Loop. By lighting a flame on her finger, she can activate an emulator-style save state.
  • Save Scumming: Her immortality essentially allows her to do this, but she must play out the events leading to her death as close as possible otherwise it may cause the Butterfly Effect.
  • Shading/Colour Dissonance: In the manga, Kirie's hair is shaded as if implying orange or pink hair. However, in coloured illustrations and the anime, her hair is blonde. This throws a lot of readers off, especially when there's other blonde characters in the manga who aren't given hair shading.
  • She Is All Grown Up: In the Time Skip arc, Touta finds Kirie, but she has grown into an attractive teenager since losing her immortality allowed her to go through puberty after she delayed it for several years.
  • Shrinking Violet: Subverted. In her introduction, Kirie hides behind Ikkuu without uttering a word to Touta. This gives Touta the impression that she's shy. The moment she starts talking, however, she reveals her true colors as an abusive Tiny Tyrannical Girl.
  • Single Tear: She sheds a tear at the thought of being forced back in time to when she first activated her time powers upon being killed without a Save Point, since it means pushing the Relationship Reset Button for her and Touta.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: She falls for Touta because he's a kind-hearted boy who promised to never betray her nor leave her alone.
  • Skewed Priorities:
    • Thanks to her Mental Time Travel, Kirie knows from the moment she leaves Fairyland Hall that she and her teammates are going to run into Fate who came to kidnap Touta and Xingzai Chao who has killed her in multiple loops already. Instead of warning her teammates about any of this, Kirie chooses to waste time acting like a brat towards Touta and demanding him to let her step on his face just to take out some of her anger over Xingzai killing her a few times already. And this causes her to get killed again, unsurprisingly.
    • Kirie's biggest concern is whining about being forever stuck in the body of a preteen even though she lives in a world with magic pills that can alter a person's physical age and she has more than enough money to buy years' worth of those pills. Compared to that, she never looks troubled by having gone through very traumatizing experiences like being neglected by her parents to the point of starvation and repeatedly dying since she was four years old.
  • Skinship Grope: She enjoys groping Kuroumaru's developing breasts when they're together in the bath. She also expresses interest in fondling Karin's much bigger chest.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: Her parents neglected her so much that she died of hunger and as she started to get accustomed to her power, she became increasingly disillusioned with humanity after seeing their selfishness firsthand. She doesn't want to trust or get close to anyone out of fear of being betrayed and hurt, yet hates it if people leave her alone. While Kirie acts like an abrasive and demeaning Tsundere, she eventually reveals to Touta that she's just a very lonely crybaby.
  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad: By the time the switch to monthly occurs, the panel time and Fanservice become immoderately focused on Kirie and her interactions with Touta. Meanwhile, the rest of the main characters all had their panel time and roles greatly reduced. Later chapters, however, dial her appearances down significantly, in an attempt to remedy the overexposure.
  • Squishy Wizard: She knows some magic, but she has no combat skill to speak of. Since time turns back every time she's killed, she sees her lack of physical endurance as an advantage to some extent.
  • Story-Breaker Power: Saying Kirie's Reset & Restart power is game-breaking would be putting it mildly. There's no limit to the number of times Kirie can turn back time when she dies. As long as her Save Point is intact, Kirie can give Touta and the rest endless chances to overcome the same challenge, as well as erasing any massive disasters that would bring them terrible consequences otherwise. Touta lampshades this after Kirie unlocks the ability to freeze time as a secondary power to her Mental Time Travel, calling it the ultimate god-level cheat power. This is why her participation in the fights is diminished in the last arcs and she even ends up losing her reset ability right before the final battle takes place.
  • Suicide as Comedy: She tries to slit her throat after she loses big at the stock market while she got distracted by Touta and Mizore. Which would just knock her back to a previous save.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: She has golden-yellow eyes and she's an immortal with a unique Save Scumming ability.
  • Thanatos Gambit: Due to how useful her immortality is, suicide is a viable strategy, especially if she's about to be incapacitated instead. This becomes pivotal in "teleporting" Fate to UQ Holder's headquarters.
  • Third-Option Love Interest: Kirie is introduced much later than Yukihime and Kuroumaru, Touta's other two primary romantic options, and she quickly gets a blatant crush on Touta even though she's immensely Tsundere about it. She goes back and forth between pushing Kuroumaru towards Touta and getting heavy Ship Tease with Touta herself. With Yukihime continuing to reject Touta's advances and Kuroumaru being too spineless to make any romantic progress with Touta without being forced into it, Kirie becomes the one with the best chances to hook up with Touta and she has the full support of everyone in UQ Holder, including Yukihime and Kuroumaru. However, Kirie still insists Kuroumaru should act on their feelings for Touta instead of running away from them.
  • Time Stands Still: Kirie accidentally traps herself and Touta in a time freeze that lasts four months when she kills herself at the same time her Save Point was destroyed. Later on, it's revealed this is actually an ability of Kirie that can only be activated when she kisses Touta in the lips.
  • Time Travel for Fun and Profit: She uses her Mental Time Travel powers to make a fortune on the stock market.
  • Tiny Tyrannical Girl: From the moment she reveals her true colors to Touta, Kirie is a little tyrant who bosses Touta around, berating him for his ditziness and brash behaviour (all of which incidentally cost her six lives).
  • Token Mini-Moe: She is the most childlike member of the Numbers. She's actually around 20 years old, but somehow stopped her aging process before she hit puberty.
  • The Tooth Hurts: Cutlass rips out several of Kirie's teeth so the latter can't use her Cyanide Pills to kill herself and turn back time. Kirie still comes out unharmed because she can heal herself with magic.
  • Trapped in Another World: In the aftermath of a battle against the Demon Barons, Kirie was sent to an alternate Earth that lacked magic (it's strongly implied to be "ours"). With the help of Dana, she managed to return to her Earth, but Kirie had to give up her immortality in exchange.
  • Tsundere: Big time, complete with verbal abuse, suspiciously specific denials and violent tendencies towards Touta, despite her obvious concern for him. She keeps saying she doesn't like him or anything. Nobody is fooled. She does have some dere dere moments, but only with Touta.
  • Uptown Girl: Kirie has a fortune that amounts to hundreds of billions and is UQ Holder's main financer. She falls for Touta, a Country Mouse who works as a floor cleaner and waiter with a comically low salary. It's mentioned in her introduction that Kirie is essentially Touta's benefactor.
  • Virgin Vision: In the Time Skip arc, Kirie can quickly tell that Touta already had sex with Kuroumaru and Karin. Due to the girls' deal, Touta proceeds to do the same with Kirie.
  • Womanchild: Chronologically, she's a young adult and her mental age is probably more advanced taking her time resets into account. Her behavior, however, is by far the most childish out of the Numbers. Ikkuu does call her on this whenever she acts more immature than her junior immortals.
