To-do list:

  • Inline wicks can be replaced with wicks to UsefulNotes.Trademark if they fit. Remove standalone examples.

    Original post
The problem: Iconic Logo is a trope about logos that are so iconic, everyone can recognize them. Per the description:

This trope is for franchise logos that have become so associated with their particular franchise that changing them would be unthinkable, even if this is not the "Logo" the franchise originated with.

Per the Laconic:

A logo known by everyone who has not been living in a cave for the last century. No text needed.

As can probably be seen, there are several problems here. First, what counts as iconic? There is no actual criteria given at all. Second, is this even tropeworthy? Tropes affect the story and have narrative intent—this does not. Tropes Needing TRS noted that this trope attracts Zero-Context Examples. I saw that, and decided to do a wick check.

Wick check: Link here, but here's the quick totals:

  • 4/50 examples had adequate context, or 8%
  • 35/50 examples had inadequate or partial context, or 70%
  • 8/50 examples were of other categories (including potholes), or 16%, and
  • 3/50 examples were unclassifiable wicks, or 6%

Wick analysis: As can be seen, there is a very serious Zero-Context Example problem. A gigantic portion of wicks either explained how the logo is used across the franchise, but not how it was iconic, or just described the logo itself with no other context.

Recommended solution(s): At best this could be made Trivia, but given the enormous amount of ZCEs, I propose either a disambiguation to other logo tropes, or preferably an outright cut. In my opinion, this trope is not salvageable as is, and almost none of the examples are valid. I don't see a great deal of value in keeping this trope.

What does everyone else think? Any other ideas or solutions?

Opened. I'll need to think about this one a bit more before voting (maybe after more discussion).

Edit: Actually, I'm leaning more toward disambiguating now that I think of it, due to how much of a mess this is due to the ZCE problem and other bad examples, as well as the lack of criteria for what counts as iconic. This isn't so much of a trope as much as it is a type of Trademark (which is a Useful Note and not a trope).

That's some Creator-wide YMMV, and we can't have YMMV for creators.

Can't think of what to disambiguate it with (other logo tropes don't sound too related), so cut unless something convincing comes up.

e: Maybe with Bland-Name Product and Company Cameo if there are "This recognizable logo showed up in a movie for a second" cases.

I suppose we could redirect to UsefulNotes.Trademark, which discusses logos (such as the Red Cross logo, which I'd say counts as pretty iconic).

[up][up][up]I like this idea. Would also support a straight cut.

as for a disambig, the only times I can even think a logo might be relevant is for a Shout-Out, Product Placement, or Bland-Name Product. We could disambig to those tropes, but I feel like that's imposing more meaning than this trope ever had

Archiving the wick check:

Here a wick check will be performed on Iconic Logo.

Why? The concept of this trope has been identified by Tropes Needing TRS as possibly too subjective, since what determines an "iconic logo" has no criteria, and thus has become a magnet for Zero-Context Examples.

Wicks checked: 50/50

Wick totals:

  • 4/50 examples with adequate context, or 8%
  • 35/50 examples with inadequate or partial context, or 70%
  • 8/50 other examples (including potholes), or 16%, and
  • 3/50 unclassifiable wicks, or 6%

    open/close all folders

    Adequate context (4/50)
  1. Music.Metallica: One of the most iconic in all of metal music. It's so widely recognised that if you see anyone's logo for any purpose, and the consonants at the ends have stretched-out uprights with barbed ends, you know exactly who they're ripping off. Actually explains how it's iconic.
  2. Series.Big Brother: The famous eye logo, meant to represent the eye of Big Brother that is always watching the housemates, has been a staple of every series of the show, regular, celebrity, or otherwise, since Big Brother 1. The celebrity series often jazz it up by using a star as the pupil of the eye. Explains well enough how it's iconic.
  3. Creator. The Brewing Network: The Brewing Network's hop grenade. Justin vigorously defends his trademark, usually contacting breweries who use a hop grenade personally before getting his lawyer involved. He argues that the grenade is his only brand to sell his network (and now craft beer bar), and that he cannot risk diluting the brand by allowing others to use it. Within the brewing community, when someone sees the hop grenade on someone's shirt, they know that person is a member of the BN Army (see above). Explains how it's iconic with context close enough.
  4. Creator.Di C Entertainment: This company is famous for it's logo with the kid in bed. It is one of the most talked about logos of all. Just close enough. It at least tries to explain how it's iconic.

    Inadequate or partial context (35/50)
  1. Podcast.Neo Scum: The NeoScum crew got theirs from an old lady tagging Xanadu.
    • Van Ghoul has one on the side of her van. Neither poorly-indented entry has context.
  2. Music.Knife Party: The mask with a knife running through it diagonally from the right. It even has a redesign in Haunted House which includes a Slasher Smile to fit the album's horror theme. Does not explain how this logo is iconic.
  3. Music.Descendents: A caricature of Milo Aukerman appears on the cover of most of their studio albums (the only exceptions being Enjoy! and All). Does not explain how this logo is iconic.
  4. VideoGame. The Legend Of Zelda A Link To The Past: The first time the series' distinctive logo appears, with the title in front of a sword and shield. Interestingly enough, the original Japanese version had a far more plain in-game logo with the title in front of the Triforce on a black background. Does not explain how logo is iconic.
  5. Creator.HBO: The network's logo is easy to duplicate (a Helvetica-esque "H" and "B" with a round "O" that includes a dot within it). It has been used in two different variants (one used from 1975 to 1980, and the current version used since 1980 with slight alterations to the "B" and "O") and became synonymous with the network due to the "HBO in Space" feature presentation sequence used between 1982 and 1997, that featured a metallic HBO logo (which was in fact a scale model, as was the rest of the sequence) rotating across a space background with moving stars behind it near the tail end of the sequence that then transitions into a series of light rays that move across and inside the "O" to reveal the type of program being aired ("HBO Feature Presentation", "HBO Special", etc.). Doesn't explain how it's "iconic".
  6. Roleplay.DC United We Stand: Superman's "S" and the Bat-symbol are two examples. Commented-out no context.
  7. WarriorCats.Tropes H To M: The series logo is in a custom font, characterized by being in all capital letters, with the first and last letter a larger size than the others, and long tails trailing from letters like R and A. Warriors was where it first originated, and it was used again for the other Erin Hunter series Seekers, Survivors, and Bravelands (though not Bamboo Kingdom.) Does not explain how it is iconic.
  8. Recap.Sanders Sides S 2 E 10 Selfishnessv Selflessness: Before Deceit sinks down, he reveals his logo, the two-headed snake. Low context.
  9. Music.EXO: Their hexagon logo and its iterations. No context.
  10. Fanfic. The Return To Gravity Falls: Iconic Item / Iconic Logo / Iconic Outfit: The symbols on the new zodiac became these. Dipper's hat still applies, even though he doesn't have it for a lot of the story. No context trope-slashed entry.
  11. Music.ABBA: Theirs renders their name in News Gothic Bold (using Adobe scanning) in all-caps with the first B reversed. Doesn't explain how it's iconic.
  12. Terraria.Tropes I To R: The green tree, which has several variants for specific biomes as shown in some trailers. Low context.
  13. SuperSmashBros.Tropes N To Z: Most of Ultimates character reveal trailers start with the Iconic Logo tearing through the black screen and/or the logo appearing in some additional form; in some cases, in the form of an invitation with a logo-stamped wax seal. It's a sign that someone is about to join the roster. Context-less pothole.'
  14. Webcomic.Last Res0rt: Y'know that little splotch with the cute skull motif on it? It's called "Cha0s". No explanation as to how it's "iconic".
  15. NetworkDecay.Influences On Other Media: St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador radio station CHOZ-FM 94.7 "OZ FM", owned by Geoff Stirling, the owner of local TV station CJON-DT (NTV), which used to have its longtime slogan "The Rock of The Rock" ("The Rock" being a nickname for Newfoundland, not to be confused with the nickname of Dwayne Johnson or with the movie of the same name), started playing pop music after The Rival 97.5 K-ROCK (VOCM-FM), owned by Newcap Communications, began taking away some of the rock songs that made OZ FM popular across Newfoundland. It even went through a period where it changed its Iconic Logo composed of a rainbow and a heart. Although the classic logo was reinstated on January 2, 2012, the slogan was retired in favour of a generic "Today's Best Music" slogan, due to its switch from rock music (mainstream rock, as opposed to its original specialty in classic rock) to the hot adult comtemporary format on that same day without warning. Ironically, OZ FM had operated a classic rock/contemporary hits hybrid format at one time (that also promoted local pop and rock artists, showing that there was more to Newfoundland music than the Sunday morning "Jigs and Reels" traditional music show), and this came nearly a decade after VOCM-FM switched from the hot AC format, when it branded as "Magic 97", to classic rock. There is a Facebook group calling for OZ FM to stop playing pop music. In the summer of 2019, when longtime DJ Randy Snow returned after 16 years at rival station Hits FM, it changed yet again to a station playing a mix of songs from the 1990s and early 2000s while still playing top 40 songs. Its current slogan is "Newfoundland's Music Mix." Context-less pothole.
  16. Music.Van Halen: The winged VH, that only got slightly redesigned as years went by. No context.
  17. VideoGame.X Men Mutant Apocalypse: It appears a capital X near your lifebar, and a capital E (for Evil) near the boss lifebar. No context.
  18. Recap.Fringe S 03 E 08 Entrada: Product Placement Peter's Android with prominent display of its Iconic Logo. Context-less pothole.
  19. Music.VIXX: Their Rovix icon strongly helps identify them. Low context.
  20. Magazine.Auto Trader: Two of them exist, and they are still memorable today. Low-to-no context.
  21. RWBY.Tropes H To K: Done as an "In Memoriam" moment. Volume 3's first scene ends with birds flying in front of the sun in the same pattern as Monty Oum's old signature. Doesn't explain how it's iconic.
  22. SigilSpam.Real Life: Part of the reason why S.P.Q.R. is considered the Iconic Logo of The Roman Empire. They put it on absolutely everything they could get away with, from their legion's battle standards to storm drain manhole covers. Context-less pothole, not even a logo per se.
  23. Music.B 2 ST: Used on all of their promotional materials even though their name isn't officially spelled like that anymore. Doesn't really explain how it's iconic, per se, just that it's used a lot.
  24. Literature.Alex Rider: The "Boy with torch" logo (as it is copyrighted as) has been used on every version of the covers since the series launched in 2000. Doesn't say it's "iconic", just that it's used a lot.
  25. HaruhiSuzumiya.Tropes A To E: Character in the Logo: Seen on some Light Novel covers as well in some images of the anime, Haruhi's silhouette can be seen standing on the logo, mostly along with the big "H". Although this is not official, the Haruhi silhouette and the big "H" became an Iconic Logo for anime (and especially Haruhi) fans. Context-less pothole.
  26. Creator.ADK: The ADK acronym pictured. Also they got other famous logos before that. No context.
  27. Creator.National Geographic Channel (in description): The channel’s Iconic Logo is a yellow rectangular portrait frame. Context-less pothole.
  28. Creator.Konami: Well, at least their second-generation logonote  (Konami means "small wave" in Japanese). No context.
  29. Film.Hacksaw Ridge: Subtly done. The movie poster, the DVD cover, and the title screen of the film itself all include a very tasteful Red Cross. Ironic in that almost the first thing that Doss is told when he arrives at Okinawa is to lose his. No explanation as to how it's iconic.
  30. LightNovel.Nyaruko Crawling With Love: The Yellow Sign can be seen in several places related to Hasta (particularly the first TV series' opening). The Elder Sign can also be seen occasionally. Doesn't say how it's iconic.
  31. Music.Iron Maiden: That font is hard not to recognize. No context.
  32. Music.Mastodon: Played with:
    • The albums that focus on a particular theme or storyline (Remission, Leviathan, Blood Mountain, Crack the Skye and Emperor of Sand) feature the band's name in a generic font surrounded by golden patterns that give a hint as to the album's theme (Leviathan has seashells, Emperor of Sand has crescent moons, etc.)
    • The albums which don't have storylines (The Hunter, Once More 'Round the Sun) feature the band's name in a unique, stylised font.
    • Cold Dark Place, being an EP rather than a full length album, features the usual plain font but written in silver rather than gold, and the accompanying patterns are very minimalist. Not one of these bullets explains how the logos are iconic.
  33. Music.Disturbed: The Believe medallion combining the Star of David, the Christian Crucifix, the Pagan Pentagram, and Islamic Crescent Moon has become the group's standard image. The Guy's face, too. Relatively low on context. How has it become the group's standard image?
  34. Music.ACDC: The AC and DC separated by a lightning bolt in the middle, all in a gothic typeface. Doesn't say how it's iconic.
  35. Anime.Gao Gai Gar: The "GGG", logo of GGG and of the Gutsy Geoid/Galaxy Guard. It even precedes the intro for every episode, accompanied by a shock cord. Doesn't explain how it's iconic.

    Other (including potholes) (8/50)
  1. Pothole. (apostrophe removed from entry to avoid fucking up bolding)
  2. Its current slogan is "Newfoundland's Music Mix." Pothole.
  3. Ride.Walt Disney World (in note in picture caption): Pictured here is Cinderella Castle, the icon of Magic Kingdom—though you probably already knew that—as it appeared before its 2020 repainting. Pothole.
  4. LogoJoke.Dream Works (in description): DreamWorks has its Iconic Logo, a moon with a boy fishing from it. Pothole.
  5. Memes.Jo Jos Bizarre Adventure Diamond Is Unbreakable: 'Please, don't turn me into an oversimplified logo!' Explanation  Low-context pothole.
  6. Music.Random Access Memories: The Last Of These Is Not Like The Others: The front cover is the duo's only cover to their studio albums to not feature the band's wordmark and the only one to show both their helmets and the album title. Since the duo has now broken up with this being their last studio album, it's likely going to stay that way. Pothole.
  7. Quotes.Captain Obvious Reveal: ->"[The Engineer] has clearly been taken over by the intelligence behind those robots - AKA Brainiac. Look, I get that they were trying to go for a big reveal, but that's Brainiac’s symbol! By this point in The DCU, New 52 or not, the three circles connected like that are Brainiac's symbol! It’s like sticking a bat-logo on everything and then being shocked that Batman is behind it!"
Linkara in his The New 52: Futures End review. Pothole.
  8. LetsPlay.Tear Of Grace: Arc Symbol: His former logo, the green liquid bottle surrounded by flames. Pothole.
