Intro

"Uh-Oh" Eyes is an index, but is being added to trope example lists as if it's its own trope.

Question

Are all uses already covered by existing tropes, or could this index be turned into a supertrope page? 50 wicks on work pages were checked.

Findings

  • 9/50 fit another trope
  • 11/50 were a combination of several tropes, almost always Eye Color Change plus one or more color tropes
  • 5/50 didn't fit an existing trope unless I'm missing something
  • 8/50 lacked crucial context
  • 17/50 were potholes ranging from "this character has scary eyes (refuses to elaborate)" to examples better described by other tropes

    Fits another trope
  1. Characters.Supernatural Werewolves: In werewolf form, the eyes become a bright unnatural color with slitted Hellish Pupils like a cat. Hellish Pupils as noted, doesn't say what color the eyes are
  2. Characters.Trollz: When disguised as a troll his pupils are larger than others'. Eye-Dentity Giveaway
  3. Recap.Supernatural S 08 E 04 Bitten: Michael's first sign of transformation is when he realises his pupils have changed. Eye-Dentity Giveaway
  4. Characters.Supernatural Demons: The eyes of their hosts occasionally turn a demonic color. Eye-Dentity Giveaway
  5. Characters.Young Avengers Title Team: His eyes glow blue when he does big spells. Glowing Eyes
  6. Characters.Hiveswap Troll Call: Both Folykl and Kuprum have rather eerie eyes, with the former having no eyes at all, and the latter having one pure yellow eye and the other purple. correct tropes are linked, yellow-purple might fit something else as well but should analyze the meaning
  7. Recap.Supernatural S 13 E 02 The Rising Son: Jack's eyes glow gold when Asmodeus is hurting Sam, Dean, and Donatello and Asmodeus is smart enough to hightail it out of danger. the run-on sentence makes it unclear but it is probably Glowing Eyes of Doom or Supernatural Gold Eyes
  8. Characters.Supernatural Special Children: Blink it and you miss, but Jake's eyes briefly flash pale yellow in the graveyard scene. as noted this is Supernatural Gold Eyes. also may fit Eye Color Change
  9. Film. The Twins Effect: The eyes of vampires glow bluer the more powerful they get. Gypsy's eyes go black when she swallows some of the magical energy that transforms her into a 'semi-vampire'. Glowing Eyes

    One character combines many tropes
  1. Characters.Child Of The Storm Harry Thorson: The colour his eyes are is an excellent barometer for how much trouble you're in. Green's the baseline, and means you're probably fine. If his eyes are glowing gold for more than, say, 5 seconds, you're in trouble. If they're glowing red, or red-gold, you're kind of screwed. If they're glowing white, there are no words to adequately describe how screwed you are. Eye Color Change, Supernatural Gold Eyes, Red Eyes, Take Warning, Glowing Eyes of Doom
  2. Characters.Berserk Guts: Take heed in this warning, children, as the windows to Guts' soul also signify how much immediate danger you are in: Hellish Pupils: Be prepared to lose a limb or two; Wide Eyes and Shrunken Irises: If you value your life, stop moving and play dead; Blank White Eyes: You will not survive to read the end of this sen -
  3. Characters.Monster House: A crack appears on one of her "eye windows" to indicate she has awakened from her slumber. Her eyes also glow when she is awake at night (thanks to lightbulbs), and go from yellow to orange when her rage peaks.
  4. Characters.Kirby Other Bosses: He has several of these tropes at once: his eye has blue sclera with a yellow iris that Turns Red when he does, along with a horizontal black Hellish Pupil.
  5. VideoGame. The Sims 4: Eyes available for Vampires run the whole gamut, with the choice of Black Eyes of Crazy; Black Eyes of Evil; Red Eyes, Take Warning; Supernatural Gold Eyes; Occult Blue Eyes; Prophet Eyes; and Hellish Pupils. And for good measure, they're all Glowing Eyes of Doom.
  6. Webcomic.Thistil Mistil Kistil: Coal's eyes are normally green, but start turning grey in the presence of danger. They turn fully grey (even the whites) jagged with red and Hellish Pupils then fully red when in full berserkergang. Eye Color Change with a few others
  7. Characters.Run Gifocalypse: When she's flat-out pissed at the gang, she gives herself double-layered irises (yellow inner layer, red outer layer) and turns the shape of her irises and pupils to look jagged, which is described as looking like "two burning holes in space itself." Eye Color Change, Red Eyes, Take Warning, Hellish Pupils
  8. Fanfic.Cindys Story: Other than the examples already mentioned, there is one other example. If a character gets angry, and gains blue eyes with red pupils, RUN. It's Blue Fire Frenzy. Eye Color Change, Eye-Dentity Giveaway, Red Eyes, Take Warning
  9. GhostsOfThePast.Tropes Q To Z: Harry's eyes tend to have four rough settings. The basic one is his natural emerald green. Then there's gold and golden-white, which usually means he's doing something big, or winding up to do so. Then there's red-gold or red, which either means that he's possessed by Chthon or that he's the Red Son - both are very, very bad. Then there's incandescent white, generally associated with the smell of wood smoke, which means that his Phoenix fragment is about to emerge and that you should probably run - preferably to another galaxy. Eye Color Change, Supernatural Gold Eyes, Red Eyes, Take Warning, Glowing Eyes of Doom
  10. Characters.Being Human UK: When Annie gets royally pissed, her eyes turn ice blue. Icy Blue Eyes as linked. also fits Eye Color Change
  11. Recap.Stargate SG 1 S 10 E 14 The Shroud: Adria's eyes flare gold and then fill with flames when she catches Carter and Teal'c on board her ship. Eye Color Change, Fireball Eyeballs

    Doesn't fit an existing trope
  1. Characters.Immortals After Dark Witches: Her eyes glitter with strong emotion instead of changing colour. It's implied she can control this as she does it to scare Dixon. sounds close to Twinkle in the Eye but I think "glittering" is different
  2. ComicBook. The Legend Of Bold Riley: In The Serpent in the Belly, the husband's eyes sinking "deep into his face" hint at his Demonic Possession.
  3. Characters.Fullmetal Alchemist Homunculi: His Game Face has purple eyes with very small pupils.
  4. Series. The Cape: Fleming's damn creepy chess piece contact lenses. One of the villains is even nicknamed Eyes, as he cannot blink. the latter is The Unblinking, but we don't have a trope for sinister contacts
  5. Recap.Supernatural S 04 E 15 Death Takes A Holiday: That roll over in his head. Completely. honestly surprised that i can't find a trope for eyes rolling over in one's head

    ZCE
  1. Recap.SCP Foundation SC Ps 2000 To 2199: The "gray-eyed man" who offers to help Mabel get her revenge on Blaine has these. yea the man is gray-eyed but needs an actual description
  2. Characters.Lost Girl: Gold and black means BACK AWAY. how so?
  3. Recap.Alfred J Kwak S 2 E 18 De Watersnood: At the end, Dolf walks into the sunset with crazy eyes.
  4. Characters.Immortals After Dark Lykae: Light blue. Among the Lore it's said to never get between a Lykae and his/her Mate. not clear about what the eyes mean
  5. Fanfic. The Hidden Empire Series: Harry’s corruption of the dark side is shown on his eyes a few times (out of the view of other characters). The first time someone actually sees it is right before a “fatal” mind rape, and the second is after he accidentally lets the illusion fall. what do the eyes look like?
  6. Recap.Supernatural S 07 E 13 The Slice Girls: Emma flashes her demon eyes at Sam when he bursts in, but changes back to normal when she turns to face Dean and begs him to not let Sam hurt her.
  7. Characters.Yona Of The Dawn: His eyes are as dangerous as they are beautiful.
  8. ComicBook.Usagi Yojimbo: Jei-san and anyone he/it possesses, and technically all other supernatural beings since it's a black & white comic.

    Pothole
  1. Recap.Star Trek S 1 E 3 Where No Man Has Gone Before: Face-Revealing Turn: Mitchell has apparently only suffered minor injuries... until he shows his "Uh-Oh" Eyes.
  2. VisualNovel. The Murder Of Sonic The Hedgehog: The Conductor's black-and-yellow "Uh-Oh" Eyes are strikingly similar to the robot hands' eyes and are a far cry from the Conductor's portrait. This is completely innocent, and the darkened eyes are just the result of the shadow from his hat.
  3. Characters.Immortals After Dark Valkyries: Glowing Eyes: Doubles as "Uh-Oh" Eyes, their eyes turn silver with strong emotion, in a fight if their eyes turn silver it's a sign they're about to give you a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown.
  4. Characters.Good Omens 2019: Inhuman Eye Concealers: Sports yellow snakelike eyes, and takes care to hide them with a very stylish pair of sunglasses— in sharp contrast to other demons, who don't even bother hiding their own "Uh-Oh" Eyes. For added comedy, Crowley can be seen wearing sunglasses as early as Imperial Rome, before the invention of glasses.
  5. Theatre.Tanz Der Vampire: They Walk Among Us: Several of the resort guests and staff in the first few scenes are secretly vampires, recruiting for Krolock and keeping an eye on things. They’re only identifiable by their "Uh-Oh" Eyes and the gloves they wear to safely handle touching garlic.
  6. Characters.Pokemon Red And Blue: Wild Man: Bruno appears to be a martial artist that has abandoned civilization—the only item of real clothing he wears is a tattered pair of pants held up by his black belt, the apparent leftovers of a gi. He's also let his Anime Hair grow out to Barbarian Longhair length, and in Let's Go he even has feral "Uh-Oh" Eyes.
  7. Literature.Immortals After Dark: If the eyes aren't already vivid in some way, then strong emotion is sure to turn them a species-specific color that serves as an "Uh-Oh" Eyes warning.
  8. Characters.Sonic The Hedgehog Eggman Empire: Divergent Character Evolution: Of the playable androids in the Shadow the Hedgehog multiplayer, only one actually looks just like Shadow, while another has orange stripes rather than red, and the remaining four have a silver coating akin to Metal Sonic complete with unique color stripes, black-and-red "Uh-Oh" Eyes, and Arm Cannons to distinguish them, while the androids of the main campaign are all physically indistinguishable from Shadow.
  9. Webcomic. The Zombie Hunters: Black Eyes of Crazy + Glowing Eyelights of Undeath = Uh-oh.
  10. Recap.Supernatural S 03 E 09 Malleus Maleficarum: Ruby glares at the brothers, black eyes and all, and orders them to leave when they learn a secret about her and drag their feet about leaving.
  11. Recap.Supernatural S 04 E 06 Yellow Fever: Dean's fear of Sam turning dark-side like Azazel wanted manifests as Sam trying to kill him while flashing Azazel's trademark "Uh-Oh" Eyes.
  12. Literature. The Caster Chronicles: Supernatural Gold Eyes: The Dark Casters automatically have these. Also falls into "Uh-Oh" Eyes.
  13. Characters.Casshern Sins: Marked Change: If his eyes suddenly light up and his facemask closes, run.
  14. Series.People Of Earth: Nancy apparently gave one of these combined with a Throat Light and "Uh-Oh" Eyes just before she ''exploded'', if Richard's recurring Catapult Nightmares in the Season 2 premiere are anything to go by.
  15. Characters.Nameless The One Thing You Must Recall: In various bad ends and a few scenes on the way to his own good end. When Tei snaps or his mask slips, he smiles and his pupils go white.
  16. Berserk.Tropes Q To T: Very unusual and thus rare coming from the poster child of batshit insane rage-o-hol, but there have come times in Guts's career that he was so pissed off at something that he just had the calmest expression. Be warned: Guts's tranquil fury facade is quite possibly more frightful than his usual "Uh-Oh" Eyes, and should be taken with the utmost seriousness if you want to live.
  17. Manga.Parallel Paradise: Expy: Visually, Haru is similar to Lucy: red hair over one eye, a similar facial structure and constantly having an incredibly intense look in her eyes.

Conclusion

For the most part examples of "Uh-Oh" Eyes are covered by other tropes. There are notably many that combine several tropes, but almost all of these can just be moved to an Eye Color Change example without needing change. There is also a high amount of ZCE and sinkholes. There aren't enough "other" examples for this to stand on its own as a supertrope.

Rename to something with "Index" in the title, and make the current name a greenlink. Fix wicks to where they belong.
