    r/DemigodFiles
Demigod Files is a Reddit roleplay subreddit based on the The Camp Half-Blood Series which was formed in February 2019.

Roleplay takes place at Camp Half-Blood in the current day, a decade after the characters of the original books have left. Writers play as their own original characters, the vast majority of which are Greek demigods, although there is the option to apply as a satyr, nymph or legacy.

Individual writers can create their own personal plots which take place on a small scale and are based around their characters' development, but the moderators also routinely run subreddit-wide plots which typically involve quests being sent out and can affect all campers. The plots so far are:

  1. The Seventh Strikes Back (March 2019)
  2. Enyo-Palooza (April - May 2019)
  3. War of Weather (June - July 2019)
  4. The Forest of Death (August - September 2019)
  5. The New Three (October - November 2019)
  6. The Siege of Central Park (March - July 2020)
  7. The Sun Goes Out (August - December 2020)
  8. Sky One Take One (April 2021 - ongoing)

This roleplay provides examples of:

  • An Ice Person: The monsters in "The Seventh Strikes Back" were led by a daughter of Khione named Crystal, who was part of Kronos' army during the events of the original Percy Jackson books. Due to her parentage, she had the power to control ice, which she used in combat to form a knife out of ice and to create a sheet of slippery ice on the ground.
  • Arbitrary Headcount Limit: At maximum, each god can only have six actively written kids (two for each the Big Three), and the same limit applies to legacies. This technically doesn't apply in character, due to Remember the New Guy? as described below.
  • Bedlam House: The Chaotic Cabin, which houses the children of gods like Phobos, Deimos, Eris and Lyssa, was originally constructed to invoke this trope, described as looking like a cross between a prison and a mental asylum. In 2021 when users were given the option to submit and vote on new cabin descriptions, the Chaotic cabin was the one that received the most submissions, due to some users' discomfort with the history and stigmatisation of mental disorders that the original invoked.
  • Bizarrchitecture: The Chaotic cabin, fittingly, "has no identifiable theme beyond... well, chaos". The exterior of the cabin appears to be a jumble of different buildings mashed together, including a carnival funhouse, and there's a door to nothing on the second floor. The interior has a combination of both curved and angular walls, and the building often changes, with rooms rearranging themselves and stairs moving around, among other things.
  • Canis Major: During the "Sky One Take One" plot, Camp Half-Blood's border was attacked by Aquila the eagle and the Teumessian Fox - a fox the size of an elephant, which was destined to never be caught.
  • Chariot Race: In early 2020 a chariot race was held. Characters signed up in teams of two, one to be the driver and one to attack other teams.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Due to the nature of Reddit roleplay, writers may often disappear from the subreddit without giving their characters an official send-off, either due to real-life complications taking up their time, or a simple loss of interest or motivation.
  • Classical Chimera: The Chimera was one of the major monsters fought during "The Siege of Central Park", featuring a goat body, a lion head with a goat's head on the back, and a ten foot long diamondback rattlesnake for a tail. In addition to the snake's venom, it could breathe fire from the lion head and acidic poison from the goat head.
  • Colour-Coded for Your Convenience:
    • During the "Enyo-Palooza" plot, Enyo replaced the typical orange camp shirts with ones that corresponded to the barracks she created - red for War, dark blue for Weather, black for Chthonic, white for Music/Skills/Crafts, light blue for Water, and pink for Love/Emotion.
    • Out of character, user flair colours correspond to their characters' godly parent, with the exception of mods and contest winners who have custom gradient flairs. Writers of legacies of two gods can choose which grandparent's flair they'd like.
  • Divine Parentage: Naturally, seeing as it spawned off of the Percy Jackson books, the vast majority of player characters are half-god and half-human.
  • Flash Forward: As part of the 1000 subscriber milestone event, a semi-canon post was made which takes place 10 years in the future, in 2031. Chiron held a reunion for old campers, and writers were able to show what jobs or accomplishments their characters might have as adults... or show how the characters might die.
  • Forced Sleep: At the conclusion of "The Seventh Strikes Back", Morpheus appeared in Camp, made all of the campers drowsy and sent them to sleep, and gave them a Shared Dream of participating in The Hunger Games.
  • Giant Flyer: During the "Sky One Take One" plot, Camp Half-Blood's border was attacked by the Teumessian Fox and Aquila - an eagle half as tall as Thalia's pine tree, which could generate strong winds with its wings.
  • Grouped for Your Convenience:
    • During the "Enyo-Palooza" plot, Enyo replaced the godly cabins with barracks where demigods were grouped based on their godly parents' domain.
    • Each of the twelve major Olympians has a cabin specifically for his or her own children, while the minor gods' kids are sorted into megacabins based on specific themes (such as the Anemoi cabin for weather gods and the Chthonic cabin for Underworld gods).
  • Hair-Raising Hare: During "Enyo-Palooza", Enyo organised an Easter hunt, in which campers were to track and kill three giant rabbits in the forest. Initially, they just looked like normal white bunnies, albeit the size of a large dog - but when attacked, they transformed into beasts with dark fur, long tails and sharp teeth.
  • Haunted House: Both iterations of the Chthonic cabin have been designed to resemble a haunted house. The original was a small, rundown shack with the actual living areas underground, while the current redesigned version is built in the style of an old Victorian gothic mansion with vintage furniture. Both descriptions included ghosts hanging around inside.
  • Kid Hero: All demigod or legacy characters are between the ages of seven and twenty.
  • Killer Rabbit: A very literal example during "Enyo-Palooza". Enyo organised an Easter hunt, in which campers were to track and kill three giant rabbits in the forest. Initially, they just looked like normal white bunnies, albeit the size of a large dog - but when attacked, they transformed into beasts with dark fur, long tails and sharp teeth.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: In "The Siege of Central Park" the monsters used water balloons that contained diluted Lethe river water, which instantly wiped the past twenty-four hours from someone's memory if they were splashed by it. According the mod who ran the plot, it was originally supposed to wipe a month of memory, but it was reduced due to the fact that it would have nullified people's character development.
  • The Night That Never Ends: As the name suggests, "The Sun Goes Out" is based around this trope. Apollo was kidnapped by Nyx and the sun chariot was lost, so for months until it was recovered the sun could not rise in the sky. The Mist managed to prevent most mortals from realising.
  • Neurodiversity Is Supernatural: In addition to their three unique godrent powers, most demigods have ADHD, which enhances their battle awareness, and dyslexia, which is caused by their brains being hardwired for ancient Greek.
  • Our Manticores Are Spinier: "The Siege of Central Park" featured a manticore named Spike as a prominent antagonist. Like Dr Thorn in the books, Spike was able to appear humanoid. He poisoned Thalia's pine tree with one of his spines, attacked one of the scouting groups, and was one of the final enemies the demigods had to fight at Central Park.
  • Playing with Fire: During "Sky One Take One", Phaethon, the son of Helios who crashed the sun chariot, attacked Camp Half-Blood. His arsenal of pyrokinetic abilities included Fireballs and a neverending whip made of fire.
  • Power Trio: Since quests typically involve three campers, this occurs almost once per plot:
    • The Seventh Strikes Back - Calvin Storm, Maria Van der Linde, Anwen Chevailler
    • Enyo-Palooza - Taylor Gray, Hal Kogane, Phoebe Stark
    • War of Weather had two quests sent out - Domeric Montes, Audrey Giordano, Charlie Rho; Leon Garcia, Gale Bach, Edward Barca
    • Although the New Three featured a six-person quest, it was still based around two Power Trios - Aeolus, Triton and Thanatos overthrowing Zeus, Poseidon and Hades as the Big Three gods.
    • The Siege of Central Park had no quest, but did have a few scouting missions - Andie Fisher, Caspian Kincaid, Lynn Williams; Taylor Gray, Calix Thompson, Lola Davis; Cleo Huertas, Victor Santillan, Matthew Holland; Jesse Whitaker, Aleks Petrov, Lily Blake
    • The Sun Goes Out also had two quests - Michael Pendleton, Saul Ostrovsky, Constans Reagan; Harper Sullivan, Ryan Wells, DJ Oracion
    • Averted with The Forest of Death, which was a miniplot with no quest, and Sky One Take One, which sent groups of four.
  • Recurring Extra: A generic camper NPC known only as Bob tends to show up when someone needs an NPC for the purposes of carrying out a minor task or assisting with a lesson. Similarly, Gibby the satyr also began appearing, initially only to put out ballot boxes for leadership elections but later finding his way into other posts, typically used by mods.
  • Remember the New Guy?: While most characters are new arrivals at Camp Half-Blood when they're introduced, there are plenty who are written as though they've been there for years when they're introduced for the first time.
  • Sea Serpents:
    • During "The New Three", due to the strife in the ocean thanks to Triton overthrowing Poseidon, a sea drakon capable of spitting acid attacked the dining pavilion when campers were having dinner.
    • At Sable Island, the first group of questers of "Sky One Take One" face the Ketea, two sea serpents which terrorised Aethiopia and Troy.
  • Shared Dream: At the conclusion of "The Seventh Strikes Back", Morpheus appeared in Camp, made all of the campers drowsy and sent them to sleep, and made them all dream of participating in The Hunger Games against each other, with everyone's dreams sharing the same continuity.
  • Superhero School: The main setting for roleplay is at Camp Half-Blood, where demigods are taught how to defend themselves against monsters. Characters frequently host lessons on combat, powers and survival skills - but there are also more casual lessons too, like kite-making or makeup.
  • Taken for Granite: At the beginning of "The Forest of Death", four campers were sent into the forest to find out what was killing the dryads. They didn't return, and more campers were sent to find out what happened to them. As it turned out, a catoblepas had got into Camp Half-Blood and turned those four to stone. Fortunately they were able to be restored.
  • To Hell and Back: The second quest of "The Sun Goes Out" had three campers sent to Tartarus to rescue Apollo from the Mansion of Night, where Nyx had trapped him.
  • War Memorial: The Demigod Memorial Garden was established near the cabin area to honour the campers who have died fighting for Camp Half-Blood. It features a statue of an androgynous Greek warrior, with a plaque that is enchanted to add the names of characters when they die.
  • Webcomic Time: Roleplay uses "fluid time", meaning that an interaction which may take weeks for the writers to complete out-of-character can last less than an hour for their characters. The format allows writers to have multiple ongoing interactions at once, while their character is experiencing them all at separate times. The in-character time at which each interaction occurred depends on when the post it occurred on was made.
  • Would Hurt a Child: During her reign as Camp's director, Enyo organised a game of Capture-the-Flag between campers and Amazons. She ordered the Amazons to kill and maim the teenaged campers, and the Amazons were all too happy to oblige.

Heartless character thing

These are from ABD Illustrates' Concept Corner videos: Main characters, Villains, Side characters. I started thinking about tropes for them and wound up trying to write up mock character pages although Heartless is far from being a reality at the moment. Still really interesting to watch the videos!

Main Characters

    Heartless

Heartless

The protagonist, Heartless is an undead whose life is powered by magic itself; literally, he has a ball of magic in his chest where his heart should be.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: He's undead and in order to use magic he drains life energy from living things around him, but Heartless is a friendly, chipper guy who only wants the best for people and wishes for magic users to live freely with non magic users.
  • Symbol Motif Clothing: His hoodie and leggings feature a pulse line, ironically considering his own lack of a heart.
  • Vampiric Draining: Since Heartless' own magic is limited and doesn’t replenish naturally like a living person's magic would, he drains life energy from living things around him when he uses it. This means that in a fight, he has to be careful not to go too far and accidentally sap energy from his friends.

    Alchemy Valentine

Alchemy Valentine

A wizard with the ability to transform objects into other objects, and to alter their own appearance. Despite their world's view on magic, Alchemy celebrates their magic and uses it regularly, and they run an underground magic/drag show where they pose as both the magician and their own assistant.

    Flint Solveig

Flint Solveig

A wizard with the power to create fire. He's also a strong fighter even without the use of magic, and participated in martial arts tournaments before joining Alchemy and Heartless.
  • Ambiguously Brown: Flint has light-medium brown skin and seems to have a Roman nose. Since Heartless takes place in a fantasy world, he may not have real-world equivalent race.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: Flint is a boxer, and participated in martial arts tournaments before meeting Heartless and Alchemy. Even without using his magic he won all of his fights in the tournament.
  • Playing with Fire: Flint's magical ability is to control fire. Ironically for a pyrokinetic, however, he can't handle hot weather, as the heat makes him groggy and he just can't function properly.
  • Steven Ulysses Perhero: Flint is used to ignite a spark and 'Solveig'' derives from Old Norse words for "sun" and "strength" or "battle" - a fitting name for a boxer with fire powers.

    Eira Hale

Eira Hale

A highly skilled self-taught swordsman with magic based around ice, frost and snow. He used to be a street punk when he was younger, but he now works as the head of the royal guard in a snowy kingdom. He is the king's closest friend and would put the king’s life before his own.

Eira is initially distrusting of Heartless and his team, and only reluctantly works with them to rescue the king after a letter they were supposed to deliver to him puts him in peril. When Eira is introduced he still rejects his magic as a wizard and has staved off of using it for so long that it's somewhat unfamiliar to him

    Doppel Glass

Doppel Glass

A wizard who comes from a steampunk-themed city with a lot of metal and waterways. He's a thief who uses his magic to get away with petty crimes.

Doppel’s magic is based around mirrors and reflections; he can create tangible mirrored copies of items and people, and can reflect attacks back at the person who threw them out. When he was younger he got too ambitious with a spell and created a more timid copy of himself that he couldn't get rid of; this mishap also weakened his magical ability since it were was between the two Doppels.

  • Mirror Self: While the original Doppel is more boisterous and rowdy, the copy is meek and timid. However, the copy isn't evil.
  • Oddball Doppelgänger: While the original Doppel is more boisterous and rowdy, the copy is meek and timid.
  • Steven Ulysses Perhero: Doppel meaning "double", as in ''doppelgänger’’, and Glass as in a mirror - a fitting name for someone with magic based around mirrors and reflections, with a permanent copy of himself.

    River Dial

River Dial

The final person to join Heartless' team. River's magic allows her to amplify and accelerate the energy that’s already inside of living things to 'power them up', with such applications as limiting an enemy's magical output, accelerating somebody's healing process to help them recover from a wound, or accelerating the growth of a plant. However, she can't use her magic on herself.

When she was younger, she wanted to be a knight, but since the Magistratum's knights garrison only accepts those whose magic is suited to physical combat she was unable to. Instead River was encouraged to become a medic, which she embraced since it allowed her to help people.

  • Artificial Limbs: Her legs are prosthetics below the knee. Since they aren't really part of her body, she can use her magic on them.
  • Green Thumb: One application of her magic is to accelerate and manipulate the growth of plants.
  • Healing Hands: One use of her magic is to accelerate someone's healing process so they can recover from wounds faster. She can't use this to heal herself, however. River serves as The Medic for Heartless' team.
  • The Medic: Due to the healing application of her magic, River was encouraged to become a medic within the Magistratum, and this is the role she serves in Heartless' group. However, she is also learning how to fight from Flint.

The Magistratum

    General

The Magistratum in general

The Magistratum is an organisation that leads a nation of witches, which operates from a group of islands where it provides refuge for witches who have been cast out from their homes. The Magistratum stands against the Jury and tracks down witches who use their magic for evil.

It is led by a group of powerful witches called the Council of Magistrates.

  • Dress-Coded for Your Convenience: Each of the three basic divisions has a distinct uniform, but a common theme is that all Magistratum uniforms feature pointed, brimmed witch hats. Higher ranking members can embellish and customise their hats.

    Guard Girl

Guard Girl

An as yet unnamed character who works either as a prison guard at Pixis or as a bodyguard for a high-ranking member of the Magistratum.

She's a childhood friend of River, and like River she wanted to be a knight when she grew up. Due to their difference in magic powers, Guard Girl was able to become one while River was not.

    Krome
An augur with the magic of "conduit"; he can channel magical energy through himself, to animate inanimate objects or to let magical attacks pass harmlessly through him.

The Jury

    General

The Jury in general

The Jury is a far-reaching organization with bases set up all over the world, but mainly in large kingdoms. Their goal is to obtain power and eradicate magic. The vast majority of the members are normal people without magic.

The high-ranking members are known as the High Court led by the Grand Juror. An elite unit of the High Court called the Wonders, who have abilities or cursed powers of some kind, serves as the main group of antagonists.

  • Anti-Magical Faction: The Jury is "just a big old group of witch hunters who want to get rid of all the magic 'cause they don't like it".
  • Dress-Coded for Your Convenience: Each of the three basic divisions has a distinct uniform, but a common theme is that all three feature plague doctor masks.
  • Faceless Goons: The uniforms for the three low-ranking divisions all feature plague doctor masks.
  • Plague Doctor: Their medic uniforms are modelled after plague doctor outfits, and the uniforms for the other basic divisions also wear the iconic beaklike mask.
  • Unequal Rites: The Wonders have abilities or cursed powers that are not magic, but certainly resemble it. They use these abilities to more easily fight witches.
  • The Witch Hunter: Most members of the Jury frown upon the use of magic, and the goal of the organisation as a whole is to eradicate it.

The Wonders

    Alastor Creed

Alastor Creed

The leader of this elite high-ranking group and the main antagonist. He has the ability to nullify magic, among other things.
  • Grayscale of Evil: Creed is the Big Bad and his outfit is entirely black and white, and this extends to his complexion and hair.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: He has dark circles under his eyes, adding to the sickly appearance of his pale skin.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Creed has a sickly appearance with pale skin, black hair, and Creepy Shadowed Undereyes.
  • Mage Killer: Although he isn't very physically strong or built for fighting, Creed's ability to nullify magic makes him particularly well-suited to being a witch hunter; it's no wonder that he has such a high position in the Jury.
  • Power Nullifier: His ability is to nullify or weaken magic-user's abilities. This makes him particularly dangerous to Heartless, who is kept alive by magic, and would die if Creed were to nullify his magic 'heart'.

    Dock

Dock

A large and imposing (possibly self-proclaimed) "doctor" with the ability to transfer his own afflictions and wounds onto other people, whom he considers his "patients".
  • Empathic Healer: Inverted. Dock is capable of transferring his own afflictions onto other people. He will injure or poison himself and pass it on to a "patient" as a form of attack, saving himself from the adverse effects and harming them instead.
  • Foil: To River. Where she is a nurse and seeks to heal and help people, Dock is a self-proclaimed doctor sho seeks to harm others. River's magic can't heal herself, while Dock's ability is specifically to heal himself by passing his wounds or afflictions onto someone else. This is reflected in their costumes; both of them wear the uniform of their respective organisation's medical division, and River has a primarily white and cool green colour scheme while Dock has a primarily black and sickly green colour scheme.
  • Plague Doctor: Like the lower-ranking medics, Dock wears a plague doctor uniform. He declares himself a doctor, but rather than curing or healing people, he inflicts harm on the people he calls his "patients".

    Lorelei

Lorelei

Creed's second-in-command. By day, Lorelei is a well-known performer, but she's also a dedicated member of the Jury and highly devoted to Creed in particular.

Lorelei's "siren" ability gives her a range of abilities all involving her voice, including that she can mimic sounds and voices, can hypnotise people with her voice, and can sing or speak at a frequency high enough to shatter glass.

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Lorelei is "the smiley type" of villain. She puts on a public image of being an innocent, pure goody two-shoes, but with the Jury she hypnotises people to forget things or to allow her and her allies to do horrible things, all with a dreamy smile on her face.
  • Light Is Not Good: Befitting her Bitch in Sheep's Clothing personality, her outfit is entirely white and pale grey in order to invoke Light Is Good, in contrast to the costumes of the other Jury members which heavily feature black. Despite this, Lorelei is still a sinister villain.
  • Steven Ulysses Perhero: In German lore, Lorelei is a siren who lures men to their doom, similarly to this Lorelei's ability to hypnotise people with her voice.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Creed. She'd do anything he asked with a wide smile on her face.

    Bandy Bellamis

Bandy Bellamis

A member of the Jury who joined Not out of any personal vendetta against magic or any desire to do evil, but simply out of self-interest and -preservation; he's loyal only to himself.

Bandy's ability is to teleport himself or others by swapping the places of objects, people or even abstract concepts.

  • Alliterative Name: Bandy Bellamis.
  • Domino Mask: He wears a simple black domino Irisless Eye Mask Of Mystery as part of his jester getup.
  • Happy Harlequin Hat: He wears a red two-coned hat with bells as part of his jester getup.
  • Irisless Eye Mask Of Mystery: In contrast to his black Domino Mask, his eyes are entirely white.
  • Ironic Name: Bellamis is a French name meaning "good friend", but Bandy is a character who only looks out for himself and takes the position of antagonist.
  • Swap Teleportation: His ability is to teleport himself or others by swapping the places of objects, people or even abstract concepts.
  • Villainous Harlequin: He's a high ranking member of the Jury who dresses in a red-and-black jester's outfit and enjoys using his Swap Teleportation ability to get people turned around.
  • Villain Teleportation: He uses his Swap Teleportation ability to act as a "getaway driver" of sorts for his allies, teleporting them to and from different locations.
  • The Witch Hunter: Averted. Unlike most of the Jury, Bandy does not have any personal hate towards magic. He only joined the Jury out of self-interest, since he could see that it was becoming a more and more powerful force, and his loyalty can very easily change if he sees that another faction is becoming stronger.

    Diana Shikari

Diana Shikari

Either a bounty hunter or the captain of the Jury's active scouting division.

Her ability is based around hunting and tracking. She can mark a target and her bullets will curve around obstacles in order to hit it with perfect accuracy, and she can track said target over long distances.

  • Homing Projectile: Her ability allows her to mark a target, which will make the bullets she shoots curve around obstacles in order to hit it.
  • Steven Ulysses Perhero: Diana is the name of the Roman goddess of hunting and archery, and shikari is an Indian word for a hunter; Diana the character uses a gun and has abilities that make her a great hunter and tracker.
  • Symbol Motif Clothing: Her hat and boots feature crescent moons, and a sequence of moon phases decorates the bottom of her cape.

    Lance Lothaire

Lance Lothaire

A brash, hotheaded fighter with the ability to summon weapons and armour from his "hoard".
  • Alliterative Name: Lance Lothaire.
  • Blood Knight: He loves to fight, and has been described as bloodthirsty. In fact, the only reason he joined the Jury was for an excuse to fight, rather than a particular disdain for magic-users.
  • Foil: To Eira. Both are knights, but where Eira is disciplined and refined and on the side of good, Lance is a hot-headed, bloodthirsty villain. Visually, they have opposing colour schemes - black and orange for Lance, white and blue for Eira.
  • Steven Ulysses Perhero: Lance is name’s after Lancelot the knight, and his name sounds like a weapon. Lothaire is a name that means "famous warrior/army". Lance revels in fighting and has the ability to summon weapons.
  • The Witch Hunter: Averted. Lance doesn't particularly dislike magic, he just wants a reason to fight.

Others

    Prince Arthyr

Prince Arthyr

The prince of the snowy kingdom that Eira is from. Despite the traditional anti-magic views of much of the kingdom, Arthyr does not have any fear of or disdain for magic users.

He met Eira when they were both teenagers, after Arthyr gave his minders a slip and then wound up in danger, and was subsequently saved by street punk Eira. After that, Arthyr kept sneaking off to meet Eira again and gradually formed a friendship.

    Moira

Moira

The proprietor of a cosy little shop in the village of Brightbarrow known as Moira's Odd Jobs Office, or MOJO, which is a bakery, a post office, and handyman-for-hire shop all rolled into one. This is also where the protagonists reside and work between story arcs.
