Residents of the Mansion

    Claire Elford
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/claire_elford_2941.jpg
"I like cute things, and pretty things, and beautiful things. I'm just girly like that."

The heroine of the story. A carefree girl living alone in the woods. She loves anything beautiful, and regularly picks the flowers outside of the mansion due to how pretty they are. She is actually the granddaughter of Dorothy Elford, the infamous witch and previous owner of the mansion, and was under her care after the death of her mother. Though she doesn't remember it, she was Childhood Friends with Sirius and Noel (Patricia), and was particularly close with Noel.

  • All-Loving Hero: She may feel fear and hesitation to approach, but she doesn’t have true animosity towards anyone, even her killers and the most despicable of demons. The only time she ever expresses hostility is towards Lime in Sirius’ Conclusion after realizing the latter is responsible for many suffering in the mansion.
  • Amnesiac Hero: Though she does not realize it at first, her memories of her childhood were wiped by Dorothy.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Claire is and will always be the kindest, sanest person in this game, but she too has her limit. After Sirius keeps running away from her in his Route, when she finally catches up to him, she grabs him by the collar and yells at him with Punctuated! For! Emphasis! to make him listen to her. She also gives Lime an Armor-Piercing Question with a dead serious expression never before seen in Sirius’ Conclusion.
  • Big Eater: Downplayed. She seems to eat normally, but says she'd consider using the Witch's Heart to wish for mountains of food and candy. Sirius also mentioned how she "munched down her meal" with a gleeful look on her face.
  • Blue Is Heroic: This blue girl is completely heroic and upright, and has never attempted to betray her moral conviction even once.
  • Boom, Headshot!: How she died in the main routes except Noel's, where she was stabbed to death instead.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: A bit of an airhead, and wishes to use the legendary treasure Witch’s Heart for some lofty dreams like living in a world made of sweets or being worshipped as the Goddess of pure beauty.
  • Cosmic Motifs: The Sun. She’s a Genki Girl who keeps everyone’s mood by her sunny disposition, her name means "bright", and she constantly tries to reach out to Sirius and Noel (the Moon and the Stars respectively) even when they tried to push her away.
  • Costume Evolution: Upon entering the mansion, she is given a Pimped-Out Dress to wear. She’s also seen in a variety of costumes throughout the games.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Blue hair and blue eyes.
  • Cute Bruiser: She's quite cute and loves pretty things, but she also works out as a hobby and her default attacking method is kicking.
  • Cute Witch: Her costume in Sirius’ Conclusion. It’s not just for the camera, either; Claire gets to wear it in Lime’s tower and she even rides a magical broom to reach the final battleground.
  • Doomed Protagonist: No matter what route is taken, she will die at the end, and the credits will always say that "with her death, the curtains close on this story".
    • Not in Sirius’ Conclusion, though. Thanks to a combination of Sirius’ big efforts in protecting her, Wilardo’s Big Damn Hero moment and Noel’s speech, both Lime and Ashe fail to lay their hand on her.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Before Claire performs her Heroic Suicide in the Bonus Stage ending, she gives Noel some final words of encouragement in a Dying Moment of Awesome.
"..........Then all of the suffering and sadness in this witch's mansion...Every little bit of it..."
  • Fairytale Wedding Dress: When asked by Noel in his Route if she has any other wish aside from everything displayed now in front of her, she happily replies that she wants get married and wear this. Noel gently tells her that is a wish he cannot realize, and she should reserve it for the real occasion with someone more worthy.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: Claire loves everything girly, and she’s quite a decent cook (if we don’t count those times the player messing up). She and Ashe shares the cooking duty during their time in the mansion.
  • Flowers of Femininity: She really enjoys flowers, her mansion dress has a rose on its neck, and some of her other dresses are decorated heavily with flowers.
  • Gem Heart: Her heart itself is the Witch’s Heart, which takes the form of a red gemstone, and anyone who wants to take it inevitably have to murder her.
  • Genki Girl: She’s a cheerful, optimistic and somewhat childlike girl whose shenanigans are a stable source of mood lifting.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: Claire is all about cute, pretty and beautiful things such as dessert, flowers, tea, dresses, etc..., but she also keeps her hair short, works out as a hobby, and is a Cute Bruiser who can stomp monsters without needing to look down.
  • Happily Adopted: Twice. The first time was by her grandmother Dorothy after her mother was executed in the witch hunt, and the second time happened when she fell down a cliff and lost her memory, by a kind, old but childless couple.
  • Heroic Suicide: In the Bonus Stage ending, she drives a knife into herself in order to make sure Noel retains his memories for the final loop.
  • Hidden Depths: Contrasting to what Sirius believed, Claire was aware of her mother’s death in the witch hunt, but pretended she wasn’t after she saw how desperately Dorothy tried to hide it from her. Despite her bubbly demeanor, she was deeply hurt by her own thoughtfulness and bursted into tears after telling Sirius the truth.
  • High-Class Gloves: Her mansion dress comes with a pair of dark blue opera gloves.
  • Honor Before Reason: She'll do what feels correct, strategy be damned. It doesn't work as well as intended.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: The primary reason why she keeps getting killed is that she puts way too much trust in the others, particularly Ashe.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: She has big blue eyes that emphasizes her overall cheerfulness and cluelessness towards all the debauchery surrounding the Witch’s Heart she possesses.
  • Kick Chick: Fights primarily using her legs, whose offensiveness can be compared to Wilardo's gun. Heck, a giant candy ball which can turn her and Sirius into pancakes shatters under her leg in one single kick!
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: She can literally kick demons in the face in her mansion dresses just fine - she just takes it off in Sirius’ Route because she’s afraid she will dirty it during the long boss fight.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: To Noel. Because of his father's abuse and not having other friends his age, he became very attached to Claire in their childhood. This caused him to value the time spent with her even more leading to him setting up the "Groundhog Day" Loop so he could stay with Claire and prevent her death.
  • Living MacGuffin: More proactive than most, but the plot is driven by everyone's relationship with Claire, and what they want to either do with her, whether it be protecting her like Noel, stealing her heart like Ashe and Wilardo, or just trying to break her, like Lime.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: No matter how hurt she is, she'll shrug it off and help others. Though she was shot in the arm, she’s still more concerned about Wilardo, though to be fair he was beaten up pretty bad.
  • Meaningful Name: Claire means "bright"; matching her status as a Genki Girl and placing her as the Sun to Sirius' Moon and Noel's Stars.
  • Nice Girl: She is genuinely very sweet, always looking out for everyone and finding herself unable to think bad of her four co-habitants.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: Sirius gives her a formal dress to wear during the day. She changes back into her casual clothes during the night. During the Opening Theme of Bonus Stage, she’s dressed up in four different evening gowns as well.
  • Player Character: The main one; you will be controlling her the most.
  • The Pollyanna: Despite suffering from many hardships in both her childhood and the life in the mansion where a second of carelessness can get her killed brutally for something not even her own doing, she remains cheerful and encouraging, and tries to reach out to other residents.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: When her Innocent Blue Eyes turn into a red shade, everyone starts to realize something has gone wrong. They’re right - she’s possessed by a demon.
  • Secret Legacy: It’s revealed in Sirius’ route that she is the granddaughter of the witch Dorothy, which gives her the Witch’s Heart per the demonic contract her great-grandmother Susie Elford had.
  • Stepford Smiler: In her childhood, she already knew her mother was executed in the witch hunt, but pretended she didn’t because she saw how Dorothy desperately hid the truth from her. Even when Sirius accidentally revealed it in a fit of anger, she still smiled and tried to put the blame on herself.
  • Sweet Tooth: Loves pastries and candy.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: In Bonus Stage, she sympathizes with her would-be killers after seeing their backstories.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: She’s the kindest and sanest character in the cast, but almost everyone is out for her blood and all routes end with her death, except for Sirius’ Conclusion.
  • True Blue Femininity: She’s associated with blue, obsessed with being girly and elegant, and is The Smurfette Principle of the mansion’s residents.

    Ashe Bradley
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ashe_bradley.png
"My name is Ashe Bradley. I'm but a humble traveler."

A friendly traveler who is looking into the Witch's Heart rumor and one of the most cheerful guests in the mansion, second only to Claire. He was studying to become a doctor in order to cure his little sister's disease before he lost his family due to a fire caused by a rogue arsonist, who turned out to be his friend. He is seeking to resurrect them with the Witch's Heart.

  • Above Good and Evil: In Sirius' Conclusion, he says that he doesn't care for "right" and "wrong". All he cares and fights for is to bring his family back from death.
  • The Ace: Seems to be able to do almost anything with ease, from cooking to reading multiple languages, but...
  • All for Nothing: His fate if he gains the Witch's Heart. Bringing people back from the dead is considered a positive wish - something the Witch's Heart will not grant, regardless of what you do to gain said wish. In his own scenario, where he wins, he finds this out the hard way.
    • What about returning back in time like Noel? Noel himself and Rouge actually discussed this in Sirius’ Conclusion, and the answer was "no". Ashe simply isn’t similar to Noel, whose status as a demon and relationship with Rogue allow him to try over and over again, he would only have one chance - a single mistake, a fleeting moment of weakness and that precious chance will be down the drain. Also, it should have been at least ten years since the incident with his family; there is no certainty he would even be able to travel that far into the past. After some discussion, Rogue states this decisively:
Rouge: "[The Witch’s Heart] can’t grant Ashe’s wish."
Rouge: "...It's impossible, absolutely impossible. The possibility may not be zero, but it's no exaggeration to say it's impossible."
  • Ax-Crazy: He is the most unstable of the group by far, as he has no problems with killing multiple people to get to the Witch's Heart. He also seems to take quite a bit of pleasure in his kills, but that's mostly a front.
  • Badass Bookworm: He’s an avid reader who gets really excited when given a room full of books and a former ace medical student, with an uncannily extensive knowledge about witchcraft. Anyone playing this game long enough can tell you that he also has quite the impressive kill streak partly thanks to his skill with knives.
  • Becoming the Mask: Despite everything you see in this page, Ashe has still grown fond of the residents of the mansion. The only time he'll admit it, though, is at the end of Sirius' route: the one situation where everyone else is already dead and unable to hear him.
  • Being Evil Sucks: Heavily implied in the first game, then finally stated in his rant during the Bonus Stage ending. He doesn't enjoy what he's doing, but dreads the alternative far too much to consider stopping.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He loves his sister Lilia dearly and will do anything for her sake, be it becoming a doctor to cure her illness or learning how to cook and play piano because she liked it. He develops an Odd Friendship with Noel since his childishness is similar to hers, and as Claire reminds him of Lilia, eventually he can’t bring himself to kill her in Sirius’ Conclusion.
  • Birds of a Feather: With Wilardo. They've both suffered long enough that they feel the Witch's Heart is their only way out, which is the reason why Wilardo's Hazy-Feel Turn shenanigans anger Ashe so much.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: In every single scenario except Sirius's route, he behaves as a kind and friendly traveler before revealing himself as an Ax-Crazy killer.
  • Blatant Lies: So, so much. And it usually works. Wilardo, the most savvy of the human cast by far, can't help but be flabbergasted.
Wilardo (thinking): "You are the one whose lies are so bold it's scary."
  • Braids of Action: Wears his hair in a single braid and is never seen to undo it in game. Of course, he keeps it even in his battles with Wilardo and Sirius.
  • Broken Ace: He's good in many areas, and is stated to be the best cook between the humans even if you manage to ace every cooking minigame there is. This turned out to be his downfall in the past.
  • Butt-Monkey: In most extra material, if it's something comically bad, it'll most definitely happen to him. And it's hilarious.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Every scenario begins with him having a friendly and trustworthy personality, only to end up as one of the biggest threats to Claire's life as he betrays the rest of the group in some way. Yet this is somewhat justified, as he has lost most of his trust and faith in others when his friend, Matty, turned on him by killing his family.
  • Cope by Pretending: Not only does he deal with his Survivor Guilt by pretending his family is "just waiting", he also acts out a far more malicious, unhinged persona whenever he starts killing, to repress his disgust at his own actions.
  • Cute and Psycho: He is bubbly and cute, and has a kinder side (such as when he's nursing Noel). But he will kill to grant his wish.
  • The Cynic: He thinks that right and wrong are meaningless concepts and everyone is a demon deep inside, so the only way to get through life is to become a demon yourself.
  • Deadly Doctor: Downplayed; while not really a doctor, he wields scalpels and has medical books in his traveling bag. His cosplay in Bonus Stage is also a doctor.
  • Determinator: He is dead-set on getting the Witch's Heart, and will not hesitate to murder cute little Claire.
Ashe: "You may not believe it, but I'm good at trying."
  • Dismissing a Compliment: Trying to compliment him will cause him to either casually dismiss it or freeze up completely.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Is one of the two characters who refuse to drink from the Pretty Bottle if it happens to contain wine (the other being Noel), but is seen drinking heavily in Noel's route, possibly psyching up for his future murder of Claire. In Sirius' Last Story, he drinks so much he knocks himself out cold for a good while.
  • The Dutiful Son: Back when his family was alive, he willingly decided to pick up from his father's career in medicine to be able to provide for his family, his chronically ill younger sister in particular, when he became an adult. He was so intent on following this life path he worked himself sick and exhausted fairly often. Unfortunately, this dream of his was exploited by a jealous peer who caused him to lose it all.
  • False Friend: To everyone, but especially Claire, whom he befriends only because she holds the Witch's Heart, and he needs to kill her to get it. He learned how to be this from Matty, his "best friend" who burned down his house and killed his family. Though different from Matty, he seems to at least have some genuine appreciation towards the mansion’s residents.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Seems to have developed one of sorts with Wilardo, most notably in Bonus Stage. It doesn't go very well for them.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Ashe was a young genius with decent morality, but his family’s death along with being betrayed by someone he thought was his closest friend destroyed him throughly into a crazed murderer who would slaughter innocents left and right if it means his family can come back.
  • Forced to Watch: Was restrained by his neighbors as his house burned down, family still inside.
  • Genius Sweet Tooth: Likes sweet food and is the smartest of the human characters.
  • Green and Mean: His image color is green, and he’s the one who poses the most threats to Claire on the human side.
  • Hallucinations: Whenever his anxiety spikes, he sees people with blacked out faces with glowing red smiles, and the "music" in these sections of the game imply auditory hallucination as well.
  • The Heavy: Along with Lime, he is the biggest direct threat to Claire, as the one who usually winds up killing someone and instigating the trouble in each scenario. Bonus Stage even reveals him to be the one who has killed Claire the most.
  • Hidden Depths: In the Bonus Room at the end of Bonus Stage, it's stated that most of his skills were obtained through sheer determination, because he wanted to provide for his family better.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: In the Human Side, he has longest hair on the courtesy of, well, being the only one with long hair.
  • Made of Iron: Even though his physical prowess is average among the Human Side, his toughness seems to be something only Wilardo can achieve. Particularly, in Sirius’ Conclusion, he gets thrown like a library worth of books in the face, bashed in the head with a chair, and shot multiple times. He still manages to get out of the collapsing mansion on his own, try to kill Claire, then walk away assumingly pretty far since Wilardo, Sirius and Claire don’t seem to notice him anywhere nearby during their leave.
  • Mask of Sanity: One is forgiven to think that he’s undergoing a Sanity Slippage during the story course, but the truth is that he has remained broken since his family’s death - frequent hallucinations episodes, Past Experience Nightmare, health issues, drinking problem and all. He’s just so good at acting like a sociable and friendly, if weird, guy that almost no one realizes it.
  • Master Poisoner: As he was a medical student, he has some knowledge about anesthetic and poison in general, which he puts to use to sneak in Sirius’ (actually Dorothy’s) room and deal an slow, irreversible killing blow to Claire and Sirius in Bonus Stage.
  • Necromantic: His motive for obtaining the Witch's Heart is to bring back his dead family.
  • Nightmare Face: Not only does he sport quite a lot of these throughout the games, but it's revealed in Bonus Stage that he often hallucinates others sporting one. One similar to the face his close friend made after burning Ashe's family alive, no less.
  • Obfuscating Insanity: He's not mentally well by any means, but he tends to act more unhinged than he really is whenever he commits his kills, as a form of coping with his own actions. Wilardo and Noel lampshade this in Sirius' Conclusion.
  • Odd Friendship: Noel's naivety seems to speak to him.
  • Older Than They Look: His appearance and cheerfulness would not suggest that he’s the second oldest of the bunch at 27 years old.
  • Parting-Words Regret: "Surely we'll never reconcile", before leaving to buy his little sister a cake.
  • Past Experience Nightmare: He occasionally has nightmares about the fire that killed his family and his sister’s charred corpse constantly asking why he didn’t save her; all of which feed more into his insanity.
  • Poisoned Weapon: In the Bonus Stage, he coats his scalpels with poison which quickly weakens Claire and Sirius who were hit by them. Eventually, to prevent Ashe from earning the kill by technicality and ensure that she and Noel keep the memory of this loop, Claire has to commit suicide before the poison gets her.
  • Precious Photo: Of his dead family. He uses it as motivation, as he intends to use the Witch's Heart to revive them. When he loses it, he goes absolutely nuts.
  • Stepford Smiler: Ashe seems to be a Genki Guy on the same level with Claire, but beneath his cheer hides a great deal of guilt, trauma and mental instability. When he believes no one is around to watch him anymore, he drops his mask and becomes a solemn man who shows no attachment to anything other than his goal to revive his family. Even his deranged smiles and Laughing Mad moments count as they are only a way for him to cope with his actions, not that he really enjoys killing.
  • Stress Vomit: It was somewhat Lost in Translation, but he threw up in the kitchen sink due to having recently murdered Sirius in his own route. As of Sirius' Conclusion, this has been confirmed to be a frequent issue of him.
  • Supreme Chef: You cannot overcome him even if you manage to ace every cooking minigame there is. He is such a good cook that he even lectured his mother about culinary arts in the past.
  • Survivor Guilt: His entire motivation can be summed up in this trope. His family was burned alive in front of him, and he could do nothing but watch since the adults in the area had him restrained once he tried to enter the burning house. Then the murderer, his False Friend Matty, comes along, saying that if Ashe hadn't annoyed him with his superiority, none of this would've happened...
  • Tall Poppy Syndrome: His status as a young prodigy ticked many people off in his hometown; which culminated in his house being burned down by a jealous arsonist.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Of the group of five trapped in the mansion, he is by far the most unstable and murderous. He is also the one who has killed Claire the most.
  • Tragic Dream: He wants to save his family from their death by arson. The Witch's Heart cannot possibly grant that wish, since it can’t directly save others. He also can’t do it Noel’s style by reversing time either: he doesn’t have Noel’s advantages to repeat it over and over if he ever fails, and the time the arson happened was very far back in the past anyway.
  • Trauma Button: Being complimented or thanked in an enthusiastic manner: being a young prodigy who was complimented at a regular basis was what caused a jealous peer to burn his family alive.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Lime has played him like a fiddle for years.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: His flashbacks in the Bonus Stage show that he was a nice kid who loved his family. Then his house got burned down, and his family died with it- and the perpetrator turned out to be someone he thought was his friend. He snapped that day and never looked back.
  • Villainous Breakdown:
    • At the end of Bonus Stage. He was wavering but fairly resolute, but the combo of Sirius' Badass Boast and Wilardo's Hazy-Feel Turn left him completely alone to cope with himself and his actions. He didn't take it very well.
    • In Sirius' Conclusion, everyone's belief in Ashe causes him to break free of his hallucinatory madness; something that makes him give up on everything and leave the mansion by himself.
  • Virtue Is Weakness: Part of his Motive Rant.
  • Weak, but Skilled: A fan asked IZ where exactly he stands in comparison with other human characters strength-wise, since he seems to come out on top in most confrontations. Turns out he's right in the middle: having average physical prowess (compared to Sirius and Noel who are weaker and Claire and Wilardo who are stronger) and his impressive win streak is due to this trope instead.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He's willing to kill anyone and everyone in order to obtain the Witch's Heart and revive his family, especially his little sister.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: He was once a kind fellow until his "best friend", Matty, killed his family by burning down their house and taunted him about it. This cruel betrayal made him an untrusting and manipulative person, because he thinks everyone else is the same way.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He has no problem brutally stabbing Claire to death with a knife.
  • Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: His gold eyes make him look even more like a snake, alluring to his Chronic Backstabbing Disorder.
  • You Remind Me of X: In Sirius's Ending, just as it looks he's about to kill Claire, he realizes she reminds him of his little sister. This (and Noel's speech to him minutes ago) causes him to not go with his plan and spare Claire.

    Wilardo Adler
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wilardo_adler.png
"Wilardo Adler. That's all."

A stoic man who sells flowers and wields a gun. He used to be a normal human being, but was given immortality by the Dark Lily. Countless years of living and never aging has caused him to isolate himself and travel around in order to avoid being found out and persecuted. Worn out and exhausted from living, he actively seeks the Witch's Heart in order to fulfill his wish of dying once and for all.

  • The Alcoholic: Is one of the three characters who still drinks from the Pretty Bottle if it contains wine instead of water, and has barrels of the stuff in his room. He's the only one seen chugging the tester wine Rouge presents him and the rest of the main cast in this comic. And he still manages to get the quality of the wine wrong.
  • Being Evil Sucks: With one exception in Sirius' route, he tends to lament whenever he ends up being the culprit.
  • Big Damn Hero: Finally appearing in time, Wilardo saves both Sirius and Claire from Ashe’s hands in Sirius’ Conclusion.
  • Birds of a Feather: With Ashe. They've both suffered long enough that they feel the Witch's Heart is their only way out, which is the reason why Wilardo chooses to believe in Ashe's "human heart" in Sirius' Conclusion.
  • Book Dumb: He lacks the ability to read complicated text, and his go-to book genre is adventure fiction. Justified in his poor upbringing, but Played for Laughs in this extra comic.
  • Bottomless Magazines: He never runs out of ammo for some reason.
  • Celibate Hero: When openly presented with the possibility of spying on and checking the bust size of a bathing Invective (possessing Claire's body), Wilardo's reaction is a Flat "What". He does the same in his flashback when told by Gramps about the cute thief girl's "assets", implying that he has always been like this.
  • Characterization Marches On: In the prologue, Wilardo appeared to be a rugged and crude person who openly expressed his annoyance at the locked doors and shooed Claire away with a mocking smile, which isn’t quite in line with his current characterization as The Stoic and The Comically Serious.
  • The Comically Serious: His Perpetual Frowner tendencies are Played for Laughs more often than not, causing him to star in many an extra comic.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Whenever some kind of trickery or deception shows up, expect him to point it out and mock it relentlessly.
  • Death Seeker: His life as an immortal has become so tedious and meaningless to the point where his wish for the Witch's Heart is to die.
  • The Ditherer: Empathic type. He tends to postpone his actions as much as possible once he learns he'll have to hurt others to fulfill his wish. This trait of his usually ends up in him acting far too late to change anything.
  • Driven to Suicide: Multiple times, to no avail. At the very end of his flashback, he's seen laying down at the bottom of the ocean, trying his best to get his death to stick.
  • Flower Motifs: The Dark Lily, of course. In his 2020 birthday art, he’s also seen holding a white lily, seems to symbolize his new beginning and letting go of his death wish after the event of Sirius’ Conclusion.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Seems to have developed one of sorts with Ashe, most notably in Bonus Stage. It sours considerably near the ending.
  • Happily Adopted: He was clearly at his happiest stage of life after being adopted by Gramps despite not showing it much. Even though Gramps’ actions that led to his immortality caused Wilardo to resent him for a while, the memory of their time together reminds him that Gramps was just a desperate man having to grasp the only way to get his salvation, and wasn’t happy doing so.
  • Hazy-Feel Turn: At the very end in Bonus Stage. It came far too late to change anything, though.
    • Then again in Sirius' Conclusion. That one was just on time.
  • Healing Factor: His immortality, aside from being The Ageless, also grants him this. He’s not immune to being knocked unconscious though, and it takes some time before he’s healed enough to be functional.
  • Heroic Bastard: His mother was a prostitute, his father was an unknown client.
  • Idiot Hair: Notable in that his is bright red due to a genetic mutation, contrasting the dark blue of the rest of his hair. It stabs Ashe right in the eye in an extra comic, due to their height difference.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: While he usually does the right thing when it counts, he'll also grumble about it a lot.
  • Made of Iron: Naturally, being an immortal numbed his sense of pain.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: Ashe beat his head with a chair and shot him multiple times, but it doesn’t take long before he gets up to give Ashe back a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown. He even comments on Claire’s gunshot wound to be "nasty", deliberately unaware of how his head is bleeding furiously.
Wilardo: "Hey, that’s a nasty wound there."
Claire: "...Y-Yours are much worse, Wilardo..."
  • No Body Left Behind: In endings where he successfully gets his wish, he disintegrates into a lump of ash.
  • Not So Stoic: Though not usually, Wilardo does let his brutality slip through the stoicism as he gets...excited on occasion, like that time in his own route where he smiled scarily while giving Ashe a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown.
    • Towards the end of Sirius’ Conclusion, Wilardo looks sadder than ever; his facial expression softened noticeably and there’s not one trace of his usual gruffness retained on his face or dialogue. It seems to be the beginning of him taking down all of the emotional burdens on his shoulders during those 500 years.
  • Odd Friendship: With Sirius. In timelines where they interact, they end up exchanging important and touching life advice.
  • Perpetual Frowner: To the point of needing less mugshots than the other human characters.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: The shortest of the male cast (169 cm), and has the most starting strength next to Claire.
  • Say My Name: Wilardo calls Ashe's name so often in Sirius' Conclusion that fans started to wonder if he had broken.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: He is pretty cold and harsh, but also shows some signs of caring for others.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: For all their back-and-forth vitriol, he doesn't really hold Ashe in any bad light. Notably, he asks Claire not to think too much of Ashe's actions during his own route, and goes as far as defending that seeing Ashe as "evil" would be wrong for someone to do in Sirius' Conclusion.
Wilardo: "...I'm sure he was dealing with his own stuff."
  • Terrible Artist: When asked to draw himself and Ashe, Wilardo draws a very stiff self-portrait and a bug-eyed, clumsy rendition of Ashe. It is regarded as the most accurate depiction of Ashe between all drawings.
  • Tragic Keepsake: He keeps Gramps' necklace after inheriting his immortality. He's seen doting upon it in an extra illustration.
  • Unwitting Test Subject: The reason he lays low and prefers to go undetected is that people have attempted to exploit his immortality to perform unethical experiments.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He's an immortal, and has lived for about 500 years.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: He wants the Witch's Heart so he can be rid of his curse of immortality, as his existence has become too lonely and meaningless for him to endure.
  • When She Smiles: He smirks at others, but almost never shows a genuine smile. He's seen smiling in the flashbacks with Gramps, and quickly flashes a wistful one after receiving advice from Sirius and realizing he just got life advice from someone more than four hundred years younger than him. In Sirius' Conclusion, he relaxes considerably after giving up his pursuit of the Witch's Heart: allowing him to smile more often.
  • You Are Too Late: His chronic indecision leads him to move far too slowly to change things. This is averted in Sirius' Conclusion: he appears right in time to stop Ashe before he could kill Sirius and Claire.

    Sirius Gibson
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sirius_6.png
"During your stay at the mansion, I implore you not to cause me any bother."

The current owner of the mansion, who reluctantly lets Claire and the others stay due to the Closed Circle plot of the game. He was Dorothy's assistant before her "disappearance", and is anxiously waiting for her return. He was also Childhood Friends with Claire and Noel (who was Patricia at the time). Unlike Ashe and Wilardo, he never kills Claire for the Witch's Heart, but rather out of hysteria.

  • Adorably Precocious Child: In his childhood, due to the incident with his parents, he acts considerably more mature than a normal child and is very studious for his age, as proven by this comic where the cast were to meet the others in the past and Sirius asks to borrow Ashe’s book. Ashe tells him that it has difficult words he probably doesn’t know and offers to lend him a children’s book instead, but Sirius answers that he likes the book’s author then proceeds to read it with ease when lent, confusing Ashe. Somewhat downplayed in that Sirius still retains some childish aspects like (unwittingly) getting into hide-and-seek with Claire and Patricia.
  • Ambiguous Disorder: Sirius is very easily irritated, likes to seclude himself from human contact, and occasionally hints at an unstable mind due to his horrific past. While he’s still a reliable ally who would never harm Claire for the Witch’s Heart, he has a history of murdering her 137 times out of hysteria, and is very prone to violence and death threats whenever he feels like being pushed to the corner. And if all of that isn’t enough, during the Common BE he’s shown to completely go off the deep end of insanity.
  • Acquired Poison Immunity: Thanks to his training with Dorothy, he has a resistance to medicine. This allows him to wake up in time when Ashe tries to knock him unconscious using diethyl to sneak into the backroom, as the thing works so poorly against his resistance that it ends up alert him instead.
  • Ax-Crazy: Not normally, but the entire Common BE is him going literally Axe-Craxy and demolishing anyone who catches him covered in Ashe's blood, in this case our cute little Claire. Well, given what happened to him, he has quite a quality to become Lime #2 had he been a demon, something that Lime herself notes.
  • Badass Boast: Despite how he’s commonly portrayed as a Lovable Coward, he surprisingly has many moments.
    • Before he fights against Lime in hell:
    • And another during his Final Speech before he is killed off by Ashe:
"And a wish that you would kill for? Hahaha. That's not what wishes are."
"Indeed, I also have something I want to get back no matter what, you know?? But, but the thing is..."
"...I wouldn't think a wish granted that way has any worth at all, you see?!?!"
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: His fervent attachment to Dorothy came from the fact that she protected him and took him in when he lost his parents in the witch hunt, then treated him like a member in the family until the very end.
  • Berserk Button: He will get angry, very angry at any fool who dares to disrespect Dorothy or think of her as a horrible mass murderer in front of his face. Consider yourself lucky if all you receive is a Bitch Slap - he’s in quite a sound mind then, since if he were in a hysteria what you had to deal with would be his (not so) trusty axe.
  • A Birthday, Not a Break: Not directly in his 10th birthday, but just three days after it, the massacre at the mansion took his beloved Lady Dorothy away and traumatized him for 12 years straight.
  • Bookworm: Being one of the two brainy guys of the group and with the perk of being surrounded by an excessive amount of books inside the mansion, as expected, Sirius reads a lot and can understand complicated texts despite being the youngest of the bunch as a result. He likes mystery books as he can try deducing the culprit alongside the story course, tells a fairy tale during the story night in Ashe’s Route, and one of his strengths is "studying". In fact, he has been such a bookworm since young age.
  • Classy Cravat: A white one with red gemstone brooch. He retains the cravat in some of his alternate outfits designed by IZ.
  • Cosmic Motifs: The Moon. His surname is a reference to the gibbous phase of the moon; he wears a moon-shaped earring; is at odds with Claire, whose motif is the Sun yet gets along fine with Noel, who has Star motif. As the Moon is often a catalyst in magical things, he’s the sole magic user amongst the Human Side. Then when he’s pushed to the corner, he becomes a lunatic.
  • Cowardly Lion: He’s throughly freaked out by the monsters and the only one of the guys initially refused to fight with Claire. When the time comes, however, he immediately puts himself in danger in order to ensure her (and Noel’s) safety.
  • Face Death with Dignity: If given the chance. In Bonus Stage, when it’s clear his injuries is going to prevent him from running away from Ashe and Wilardo, Sirius refuses to let Ashe go after Claire and Noel in exchange for his own life, and finally tells them how a wish granted by hurting others is ultimately futile.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Wears a moon earring on one of his ears.
  • The Fashionista: Has an interest in fashion and accessories.
  • Harmful to Minors: Dear lord, Sirius. At around ten years old, he witnessed his parents being brutally tortured to death, from being burned on the stake to eyes gouged out and gutted alive. Then assuming he could hear what was happening outside the secret room, several months later, the sound of the calamity Nicholas created outside probably reached him, bonus point as he bursted out and saw how Nicholas decorated the room. And all of that hasn’t concluded how Dorothy collapsed in front of his eyes then consumed by a big fleshy monster, which for him must be the scariest. No wonder he is a bit unhinged...
  • Hidden Depths: Though in the first two routes, Sirius appears to be mean and quick-tempered just for the sake of it, he also quickly reveals himself to be much more thoughtful as he accepts that he took things a bit too far by raising hand against Ashe when told so by Claire in Ashe’s route, and admits to Wilardo in the latter’ route that it was him who took his anger out on Claire when she didn’t do anything wrong.
  • I Choose to Stay: When she realized Nicholas would have her executed, Dorothy persuaded Sirius to escape from the mansion and gave him her remaining savings, but he refused, saying he would only leave with her or else he would stay.
  • I Will Wait for You: He clings onto Dorothy’s promise to return as a mean to keep himself going even though anyone can see clearly that she’s dead 12 years ago, and always acts like she would return at any moment. However, a part of him already accepts the fact that she’ll never come back, proven by the grave he built outside the mansion.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Sirius presents himself as a grumpy, irritable, somewhat condescending rich guy; and very prone to violence when he feels like Lady Dorothy is being dishonored. He’s in truth genuinely concerned over the well-being of both Claire and Noel - even Wilardo or Ashe if they manage to grow closer, and is willing to put himself in danger for what he believes is right.
  • Lethal Joke Character: His stats are hilariously low, but he is the only magic-user in the game: which means he's the only one who can properly fight enemies who are immune to physical attacks.
  • Meaningful Name/Stellar Name: "Sirius" is the brightest star of the Canis Majoris constellation; "Gibson" stands for the gibbous phase of the moon.
  • Minor Living Alone: Ever since Dorothy’s death when he was ten, he has been living alone in the mansion as he refused to leave it. He practices pharmacy for a living with some financial assistance and seems to keep himself educated through self-studying in the mansion’s large amount of bookshelves.
  • Mysterious Purple: His theme color is purple and he has a lot of secrets behind him, especially about his connection to the Witch Dorothy and Noel. Unfortunately, most of the time he brings all of those with him into the grave.
  • Nightmare Face: When Lime disturbs his dream in his Conclusion, he sees Nicholas, Ashe and Wilardo sporting an utterly terrifying one, with face covered in blood red shade and a pair of unsettlingly realistic eyes. Later while facing Lime, Claire actually imagines him with such face as well.
  • No Social Skills: He fully admits disliking people and avoiding interaction as much as he can. He is motivated by his loyalty to Lady Dorothy and extreme distrust of people, thanks to Nicholas Levine killing Dorothy in front of him when he was a kid.
  • Odd Friendship: With Wilardo. Sirius describes Wilardo as "the most tolerable" out of all other humans, and is not averse to having deeper talks with the guy.
  • Out of Focus: Is the main human character with the least amount of focus and screentime throughout the games. Partly fixed in Bonus Stage's flashback sections, and the first part of the Grand Finale is his route's Conclusion.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Given how he feels about the situation, it’s not incomprehensible of his face to look irritated.
  • Princely Young Man: Downplayed. He makes a point of dressing in fine clothing and appreciating fine alcohol, and, in the original Japanese version, he uses "-kun" to address others: an honorific that is only used for adults when one is their superior in some form. He needs finantial aid to keep his mansion, though, and does secretive but honest work as a pharmacist.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: While he's wimpy and spineless enough to subvert this most of the time, he can be straight up murderous if pushed to the corner. Just ask Ashe and Claire.
  • The Resenter: As a child, Sirius deeply resented Claire for being blood-related to Dorothy while he was taken in and isn't even family, thus making him The Unfavorite in his own perception. Claire's cheerfulness about things didn't help either. He has mostly grown out of it, but it still rears its head on occasion.
  • Secret-Keeper: Entrusted by Noel, he has kept many secrets from Claire in order to protect her, from her true identity as the Witch Dorothy’s granddaughter, the fact that Noel is Patricia, to their Childhood Friend relationships.
    • In the past, he also helped Dorothy keep the truth about Claire’s mother’s fate a secret, though he accidentally said it out loud in a fit of anger. Turned out Claire knew all along.
  • Selective Obliviousness: He just refuses to get that his face really looks irritated all the time when Claire draws him as such, despite even Wilardo’s confirmation.
  • Squishy Wizard: Has the most SP, but is the weakest both in health and strength out of the cast.
  • Taking Up the Mantle: The original owner of his mansion offered Sirius the property in exchange for him taking Dorothy's place as a pharmacist. Sirius decided to take up her work as a magic user as well.
  • Tea Is Classy: Aside from wine, he’s frequently associated with tea. He invites Wilardo some tea in the Bonus Stage and is seen holding a teacup in an official art.
  • Terrible Artist: Draws everyone but himself as Gonks.
  • Throw the Book at Them: Due to him lacking in physical weapons, he resorts into throwing book at Ashe during their fight in his conclusion. It doesn't do much to him.
  • Tsundere: Overly harsh to everyone, yet still has fond memories of his childhood with Lady Dorothy, Claire, and Noel.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Dorothy. He gets incredibly angry at anyone disrespecting her or suspecting her innocence - sometimes to a murderous level as Ashe can attest, and protects the mansion at all cost under the belief that she would return.
  • Wine Is Classy: True to his classy demeanor, he enjoys fine wine and tends to spout quite the Sommelier Speak when drinking them, as seen in a comic and his Route’s Conclusion.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He has no problem using his spells against Lime in the two Boss Battles against her (though to be fair, she deserves it). Or beating Claire to death with an axe - but in this case he’s not at his sanest.

    Noel Levine
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/noel_1.png
"I don't know if it'll be short or long, but my regards for our time together."

A kind, gentle man who resides in the mansion with Claire and company. Due to his rigorous job, his sleep schedule requires him to sleep in the day and wake up at night. He is revealed to be Patricia, Claire's and Sirius's childhood friend who was forced to crossdress by his father. He is also revealed to be the big monster in the mansion, and a rare variation of Hater demons, as he died without hating humans and still managed to come back to life. He wishes to save Claire from her deadly fate, and continuously goes back in time in order to do so.

  • And I Must Scream: Whenever he's in his (extremely painful, sentient) Curse of Argus form, he cannot express himself with anything but distorted Black Speech. Fellow Demons can understand him just fine; the humans, on the other hand...
  • Always Save the Girl: His entire goal is to have Claire escape the mansion alive, even if it means someone else, including his other Childhood Friend Sirius, will have to stay dead.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Noel is too nice for his own good and quite a doormat, but when he really garners his strength he can do some impressive feats. Threatening Invective into leaving Claire and Wilardo alone in his monster form? Confronting Wilardo one-on-one and putting his true form on the table? Turning into a monster in rage to avenge Claire? Blackmailing Sirius to ensure his cooperation? Except killing, this man can go any length for Claire’s sake.
  • "Blackmail" Is Such an Ugly Word: Holds the truth of Dorothy's fate over Sirius' head in order to gain cooperation in his own route. He regards Rouge with quiet indignation when she calls attention to the fact he didn't need to resort to extortion at all and Sirius would help out regardless.
  • Black Speech: Only talks in this when affected by the Curse of Argus.
  • Blue Is Heroic: His theme color is dark blue and despite some questionable moments, Noel still remains a Nice Guy who will give his life to save everyone if possible and during ten thousands time loops has never killed Claire. Even Claire killed herself once.
  • Body Horror: His humanoid body gives out during the day, so he hides inside his room before anyone can see him. In Bonus Stage, the transformation gets out of his control, leading him to slowly transform during the course of five days: leaving him stuck in a half-human, half-Eldritch Abomination state.
  • Broken Tears: He bursts into tears when he finds Claire and Sirius in Hell, not wanting them to suffer in that place alongside him.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: He can't even handle a small amount. Ironically, he hangs out with Rouge.
  • Cosmic Motifs: The Stars.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: In his monster form, he is a big, red, scary mound of flesh with many huge eyes and mouths. He is also just as kind as he usually is, even saving Claire and Wilardo at one point. A Shard flashback shows that his deliberate presence helped reinforce the Wicked Witch facade Dorothy put on in her dying breath and keep Sirius safe from intruders.
  • Determinator: He has kept the loop going for around thousands of times and as long as he may find a way to save Claire from her doom, he doesn’t intend to stop anytime soon.
    • In his own route, Noel covers Claire in an armful of amulets - an amount that makes even a high-ranking purebred demon like Rogue dizzy, let alone a Hater like him, yet his determination in protecting Claire allowed him to carry them all over from Sirius’ room.
  • Determined Defeatist: As he sticks to the pacifist route, Noel has failed to save Claire many times, and even if she managed to survive, he himself wouldn’t gain anything - he would lose a lot in fact. Yet, he still chooses to continue the loop without any regard for the demons’ taunts and keep trying hopelessly to find a way out for everyone, even at the expense of himself.
  • Deuteragonist: While Claire is the actual protagonist of the story, Noel's struggle is what led the story to be there in the first place.
  • The Ditherer: Insecure/Submissive type. Unwilling to let Claire go, but too insecure to go far enough to cause lasting change, Noel ends up being pushed around by demons and humans alike.
  • Dragged into Drag: As part of his father's Wife Husbandry plans. He made such a convincing girl that everyone who saw him in his "Patricia" guise wholeheartedly assumed he was a beautiful lady. In his male, adult appearance, Sirius - who spent a lot of time with him in their childhood - initially didn’t recognize him until he revealed the truth.
  • Dream Weaver: In his route, he shapes Claire's dreams to incorporate her favorite things.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: Once his Curse of Argus activates, he sprouts eyes from his entire body.
  • Eye Scream: The story about how he got his Curse of Argus: something jumped into his right eyes, it felt like burning, and then he cannot use that eye anymore...
  • Gentle Giant: While not actually strong, he's the tallest of the male cast (182 cm) and is kind and polite.
  • Go Out with a Smile: His body seems to have reached its limit at the end of Sirius’ Conclusion, but as his goal to keep Claire and everyone else alive is accomplished, he smiles fondly at the end when staying back in the collapsing mansion.
  • Guilt Complex: From witnessing the aftermath of his father’s atrocities to failing to save Claire, all the tragedies happening in his life have shaped him into constantly blaming himself for every slightest misfortune of others.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Has blond hair and is one of the, if not most, gentle, kindhearted and safest person to be around.
  • Harmful to Minors: First he saw his mother hanged herself. Then, one particular day when he sneaked outside, he witnessed how his father tortured people to death with a gleeful look on his face under the name of the Witch Hunt. Needless to say, Noel was severely terrified.
  • Heavy Sleeper: It takes some real talent to sleep twelve hours a day in the freaking morning. Turns out he doesn’t sleep and is not holing up in his room, either - he’s hiding from the daylight in Hell.
  • Heel Realization: In Sirius' Conclusion, Noel realizes he and Ashe have the exact same motivation, and questions if his intentions are as heroic as he first thought they were.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: He always thinks low of himself and puts the need of others before his own. When Claire said she wanted to wear a Fairytale Wedding Dress, Noel answered that she should preserve it for someone worthier, someone that is not him.
  • Hide Your Otherness: It's implied that he wears his current hairstyle in order to hide the Curse of Argus, which replaced his right eye.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: Though it also does its job showing that he’s a shy yet incredibly mysterious guy.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Can be quite callous to other people by accident, which culminates in him directly asking Ashe whether his family is all dead or not.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: In Sirius' Conclusion, he is overjoyed that Claire chose Sirius and decides to help the two survive the mansion as best he can despite the fact that he will disappear with it, because he wants Claire to live a happy life, even if it's not with him.
  • Lethal Chef: He can't even hold a knife or crack an egg correctly, but Ashe notes he might get better with experience. In the 2018 White Day illustration, he wonders why he even should follow a recipe.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: He takes after his mother Patricia a lot, from her appearance, her upright morality to her singing talent. This was Played for Drama however, as his father forced him into Wife Husbandry because of such resemblances.
  • Meaningful Name: Noel means "Christmas" in French, which happens to be his birthday.
  • Murder by Inaction: The demons enjoy calling him out for failing to act out and save Claire. In his own route, however, he intentionally attempts to let the loops end, something he knew would make Sirius and Ashe (who was actually Faking the Dead)'s deaths permanent.
  • Non-Action Guy: Has the worst stats out of the whole cast, since he struggles to even keep his human form. Fortunately enough he can simply bypass enemies, knowing them and all.
  • Not a Morning Person: Due to the rigorous status of his job, he spends the whole day sleeping in his room. When Ashe or Wilardo break into the room however, he doesn’t present, making him a very liable suspect in case someone gets killed. The truth is he really is not a morning person, for a different reason...
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Charlotte notes that the only thing that really makes him and Ashe take opposite sides is how far they're willing to go for their own gain.
  • The One Guy: He is the only male humanoid demon to appear in the game so far.
  • Pretty Boy: In the past he was pretty enough to pass for a girl, and when he grows up that beauty doesn’t go away. Even Rouge admits it, albeit in an extra comic as she expresses disappointment that Noel loses his only good points when he switched body with Wilardo.
    Rouge: "Tall… Beautiful face like a doll…"
  • Odd Friendship: With Ashe, of all people.
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: Noel endlessly repeats the events of each route to try and prevent Claire's death using the Witch's Heart he obtained from Dorothy.
  • Significant Birth Date: Noel's birthday is December 25th, which is also the day the original game released.
  • Take a Third Option: Though he doesn't actually carry through with it, Rouge gives him the chance to kill Claire himself to save her in the next loop, as well as being given Charlotte's proposal to just kill off everyone else.
  • Taking the Bullet: In Sirius’ Conclusion, he pushes a heavily injured Ashe out of the way a big shelf is falling during the mansion’s collapse and ends up getting buried under it himself. He still retains his consciousness to talk with Ashe seemingly due to his demonic body.
  • Undying Loyalty: He will stop at nothing to get Claire to safety.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: Disgusted by his father's actions, Noel vows never to resort to murder to achieve his goals. This quickly becomes a problem in Bonus Stage, where the only winning move is to have at least one person murdered.
  • Two Aliases, One Character: He and Claire’s mysterious Childhood Friend Patricia are one and the same. This only gets revealed in Sirius’ Route.
  • Walking Spoiler: He is initially a very mysterious character - the many revelations about him correspond to the many revelations in the general plot.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He is keeping everyone trapped in a "Groundhog Day" Loop to protect Claire and prevent her death.
  • Wife Husbandry: After his mother Patricia committed suicide, Noel's father, Nicholas, attempted this by dressing him up and calling him by his late wife's name, but fortunately failed due to Noel's sudden disappearance.

    The Witch Dorothy (Spoilers

Dorothy Elford

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/62ccc1af_62da_4549_9131_69b303f6d31d.jpeg
"...I shall kill you on the spot."

The truth

The Witch who is said to own the mansion. She was initially built up as the primary antagonist - a heinous Witch who perpetrated an infamous massacre against 12 innocent people inside her mansion, and enjoys killing innocent people. However, it is revealed that this is far from the case.

  • Big Bad: Subverted. She is built up as the one who trapped Claire and her friends in the mansion, but in truth, she is already dead.
  • Big Good: Despite not being around, she sowed the seeds for Claire - and to an extent, Sirius - having a happy life.
  • Cool Old Lady: Despite her age, Dorothy is definitely capable of holding her own using smoke bomb and tranquilizer gun, especially during her fight with Nicholas.
  • Dead All Along: Though built up as the Big Bad, she passed away 12 years before the story began.
  • Disappointed by the Motive: Might as well be her reaction after hearing why Nicholas is after the Witch's Heart.
  • Give Him a Normal Life: After Claire fell down a cliff, Dorothy seized the opportunity to erase her memory so that she could have a new life with the old couple who took her in, away from the tragedy surrounding the Witch’s Heart and without the trauma regarding her parents and Patricia.
  • Good All Along: At first she seems like a Wicked Witch, but in reality she is a Cool Old Lady who was blamed for the massacre by the actual perpetrator, Mayor Nicholas Levine.
  • I'm Dying, Please Take My MacGuffin: Before she died, she gave Noel her Witch's Heart to keep it safe from people like Nicholas.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Instead of the red eyes the hateful mob portrays her with, which her daughter Fiona and granddaughter Claire both inherit.
  • Mama Bear: While she failed to protect her daughter, she will protect her granddaughter and Sirius from harm. Even if it is her life she has to put on the scale.
  • Never Mess with Granny: She may not be an actual murderous witch, but she really can put up a fight if there’s no other choice. Sneakily putting all of Nicholas’ lackeys to sleep through tranquilizer gun, taking on the Mayor Pain himself in an one-on-one gunfight, and having enough vision to keep Sirius safe by scaring others away from her mansion twelve years beyond her dying breath? That’s one hell of a granny.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: She witnessed her daughter Fiona’s death at the hands of Nicholas, and personally retrieved her Witch’s Heart from her corpse.
  • Parental Substitute: For Sirius after his parents were all killed during the witch hunt.
  • Posthumous Character: She died long before the main events of the game, and is only seen through the Shards’ story and Sirius’ flashback. Her grave lies near the right side of the mansion's main entrance.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Subverted; Unlike her portrayal, she actually has blue eyes and is not a murderous witch at all.
  • Robe and Wizard Hat: Downplayed; she took her hat off often enough.
  • Thou Shall Not Kill: Her philosophy. However, she's willing to break that and kill Nicholas.
  • Trauma Conga Line: The poor lady went through it all. Her daughter was executed brutally under Nicholas’ sick hand, a friend of her granddaughter went missing inside her room possibly being taken into Hell, and said granddaughter, Claire, not long after fell down a tall cliff.

Demons

    In General
The creatures who inhabit the mansion and the strange other world. They are split between Purebred demons, who birthed into demonhood, and Hater demons, former humans.
  • Bad Is Good and Good Is Bad: Demons in general are said to love suffering and detest love.
"Demons love negativity not positivity. Because they're contrary."
  • Cute Is Evil: The four main demons - Zizel, Charlotte, Lime, and Rogue - look like small, cute little girls, but are sadistic entities who organize the Deadly Game the story is built around in which they manipulate Claire's four co-residents into killing her again and again. Rouge, the least-childlike, is also the one with the least interest in actually going after Claire’s life.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Quite a bit of the demons encountered in the mansion are friendly beings who will not harm the player.
  • Demon of Human Origin: The Hater demons are those who were once human, but became demons in death due to holding a grudge. The stronger the grudge, the more they can maintain their human form.
  • Invisible to Normals: High-ranking demons cannot be seen by human other than their pact partners unless they want to.
  • Little Miss Badass: The four main demons are all little girls when you compare them to the humans, but in terms of power they’re no slack. Just for example, they can create fantasy spaces, destroy said space, manipulate dreams, and more. Not to mention one of them was a legit soldier when she was alive.
  • More Deadly Than the Male: While Claire’s death is carried out by the male residents of the mansion, the female demons are the ones manipulating everything behind the scene and their viciousness makes Ashe seem nice by comparison. This is even more apparent considering that the only male humanoid demon we have is Noel.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill Muggles: Demons aren’t allowed to kill human, so many opt to manipulate humans into doing it in their place instead. Nothing stops them from reducing your health bar to zero in a fight, however.
  • Was Once a Man: The Hater demons were human at one point before dying. Zizel and Rouge are Purebred, so they have always been demons.
  • Weakened by the Light: Demons can’t stay in sunlight and retreat to Hell at day, only coming out when the night falls. High-ranking demons can keep their form but consider it a hassle and will avoid the sunlight if they can.

Main Four

    Zizel
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/25c5140f_3cbf_4eb9_a27e_ef4d3698caaf.png
"Please, return the contract already. I’m not made of time, you know."

A calm, purebred demon and Claire's partner in the contract. She helps out Claire around the mansion, giving her hints and explain the nature of demons to her.

  • All-Powerful Bystander: She is incredibly powerful, as shown by her being able to break into Lime’s Fantasy Space without a sweat, but leaves all the pact finding hassles to Claire and only stays as a Spirit Advisor. She will only protect Claire if the situation concerns her in some way or she feels like it; or else she is fine letting Claire be brutally murdered while sipping on tea.
  • Ambiguously Evil: She seems to be on the side of the other demons, taking part in the suffering of Claire, but there are also hints that she is trying to help Claire to some extent. She gives Claire good advice, tries to get her to be smart about trusting others, eventually bets on Claire winning, and gives Claire a choice on what ending she wants. In the Sirius Conclusion, she even saves Claire and Sirius from the collapsing mansion and lets them cancel the contract, allowing them to leave the mansion. However, she insists to Rouge that she is not doing it out of sympathy, but simply because it entertains her.
  • Big Damn Heroes: At the end of Sirius' Conclusion, when Claire and Sirius think they’re done in Lime's Fantasy Space, Zizel breaks the barrier and rescues them.
  • Dub Name Change: Giselle was the file name of her character introduction; however, her name was changed to Zizel in the English version because it had more of a "pure demon" feeling to it.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: Her outfit is a reminiscence of this, consisting of a long, black-pink dress with a lot of frills and ribbons.
  • The Dragon: To Rouge, as the second-highest-ranked demon in the group.
  • Fairy Companion: She acts as this to Claire, dropping in whenever she needs help, checking on her progress, and providing hints to the player if they ask for it.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: The ribbons on her hair are in pink and orange, asymmetrically.
  • The Gadfly: She takes amusement in teasing Claire and seeing her reaction, like reading Claire a Witch’s Heart version that is very bloody and not child-friendly at all.
  • Intrigued by Humanity: When everything is coming to an end, she starts to lean more towards supporting the humans because she finds them "interesting".
  • It Amused Me: Her motivation, according to herself. She helps the humans out because they're more interesting than her fellow demons.
  • Mellow Fellow: The calmest of the demons, rarely showing emotions other than joy and annoyance.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: She's been noted to have rather bad tastes, one example being how her favorite version of the Witch's Heart storybook being incredibly morbid that included human sacrifice.
  • Pink Is Feminine: Her theme color is pink and she has the demeanor of a Proper Lady.
  • Princess Curls: At the very bottom of her hair, signifying her elegance.
  • Russian Roulette: At the very end of the Bonus Stage, Zizel decides to make Claire join her in such a game, though it is revealed in the end that Zizel didn't even put any bullets in, and simply wanted to test her resolve/have a quick laugh.
  • Tea Is Classy: She’s occasionally seen with a cup of tea in her hand, and invited Claire one when she arrives her Fantasy Space at the end of Bonus Stage.

    Charlotte
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fb72b9ae_e78e_40c1_b437_48e7deddcd03.png
"I mean, this is a cursed witch's mansion! It'd be weird if people DIDN'T die."

A Hater demon who likes stuffed bunnies. She was once a soldier, but died due to an epidemic.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Both Papa and Lime call her Charlie.
  • Animal-Eared Headband: Her hoodie sports two rabbit ears, albeit one being torn.
  • Badass Adorable: When she was alive, she was a seasoned soldier who earned countless victories on the battlefield while still looking like a young girl.
  • Broken Tears: She cries after Lime was sent to another Hell at the end of Sirius' Conclusion, calling her a fool while lamenting over the Purebreds' inability to comprehend their thinking.
  • Bunnies for Cuteness: Carries a plush rabbit named "Rabi", and invokes a childlike cuteness with her appearance.
  • Child Prodigy: Self-proclaimed during the memories flashback, at least.
  • Child Soldier: Her Papa made her a full-time soldier when she was still a human child.
  • The Dragon: To Lime, as she helps her out with her scheming.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: She truly loved her father, even if he did abandon her, and she loves Lime so much that she cries when Lime is sentenced to hell.
  • Freudian Excuse: She was raised as a Child Soldier by a "father" who used her as a tool of war, only to abandon her when she was struck with The Black Death. This turned her into a hateful demon who wants others to suffer as she had.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: According to the Bonus Stage, Charlotte sleeps with a stuffed animal and has a different one planned for each day.
  • Nightmare Face: Sports one in a couple of her dialogues.
  • Older Than They Look: Of course, all demons follow this trope. Charlotte in particular followed this trope when she was human, as her "Papa" subjected her to a surgery that prevented her body from aging. Charlotte herself admits that she's old enough to drink and smoke in her flashback, despite looking like a ten-year-old.
  • Shear Menace: Apparently she uses a pair of scissors as her weapon.
  • Tsundere: It’s implied that she had some genuine affection for her pact partner Fiona after being exposed to her kindness and innocence, though she still acted quite apathetic to Fiona.
  • Villainous Friendship: With Lime, though there are hints of it being one-sided on her part.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: As a human, she was born and raised as a Child Soldier and lived her whole life on the battlefield, witnessing and partaking in the horrors of war. She was cared for by her "father", who she thought loved her, and she would do anything for him. But then, one day, she is infected with what is implied to be The Black Death, and her "loving" father calls her hideous and abandons her to die. Even worse, as a demon, she has to relive her death every single night. This warped her into the bitter psycho she is in-game.

    Lime
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/f6fa0ac0_0943_437f_b90c_def8f23eba40.png
"You like this kinda thing too, right? I know all about it!"

A friendly demon who likes cute things. Like her friend Charlotte, she used to be a human before being burned to death as a 'witch', becoming a Hater demon.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Wants to make Noel "someone worth loving": which, to her, means causing him so much pain he snaps. She holds some fondness for Ashe, as well, due to his instability (partly caused by Lime herself).
  • Affably Evil: Very friendly despite her evilness. It’s gradually dropped into Faux Affably Evil once she goes all out with nothing to hide, though.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: In the Sirius Conclusion, even after all the evil she did, she gets a sympathetic sendoff when she is sentenced to a crueler hell for her rule-breaking, and thinks of how meaningless her life truly was because nobody ever showed her any love, hence she never learned how to properly seek it. And then Charlotte starts crying because the one person she could call a friend was gone.
  • Ax-Crazy: She loves human suffering and manipulates events so that everyone, especially Noel, suffers like she did. Though at first she seems to be Affably Evil, she’s gradually revealed to be so unhinged that even a Purebred demon like Rouge is disgusted by her.
Rouge: "…Truly a ghastly, deranged woman."
  • Big Bad: She is gradually revealed to be the mastermind behind the Deadly Game, as the one who trapped everyone inside the mansion, in order to torment Noel and make him as miserable as she is.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Adorable and seemingly nice, but is a Manipulative Bitch who loves human misery.
  • Born into Slavery: She was born a slave, locked in a cell along with other girls and used as a lab rat in experiments, sex slave or punchbag.
  • Burn the Witch!: She died being burned at the stake after she got "too old" to her tormentors’ liking. As such, when her emotions flare up, burn scars appear all over her face.
  • Cute Is Evil: She's absolutely adorable, but she's still a despicable villain.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Fitting she would have them, seeing how she loves anything cute.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: While she technically serves Rouge, she is the one manipulating all the characters into doing what she wants to keep the game going, and seems to be outright disobeying Rouge.
  • Dream Weaver: She can manipulate dream to an extent, as seen when she sabotages Ashe’s and Sirius’ in Sirius’ Conclusion to drive them into murdering Claire, or appears in Claire’s dream herself in the Common Bad End.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: If the player gets the Common Bad End before entering Wilardo’s Route where she debuts, she will make a brief cameo in Claire’s dream without introducing herself, making her appearance this.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: As Charlotte points out, Lime doesn't understand love. Lime herself claims to be incapable of loving someone who isn't as miserable as she is.
  • Freudian Excuse: She was Born into Slavery and treated as a lab rat and Sex Slave who had to watch as her fellow prisoners were killed, eventually getting burned at the stake. This turned her into a hateful demon who wants others to suffer as she did.
  • The Heavy: She is the demon that does the most work in keeping the Deadly Game going, and the one that is encountered the most besides Zizel.
  • Hope Spot: When she was human, she thought that reaching a certain age for a Witch would result in their freedom. Turns out that Witches are actually publicly executed upon growing "too old" by society's standards. Lime, unfortunately, learns this the hard way.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Having spent a life of endless suffering, Lime yearns to be loved and everything she has done is her attempt to find someone who can understand her pain, and she would give them her love in return. Unfortunately, she goes about it in a twisted and selfish way by actively destroying the lives of everyone around her.
  • It's All About Me: Although her backstory is legitimately tragic, she believes that what she underwent are the most miserable and painful and downplays other people's suffering, which leads to her trying to make Noel suffer even more so that he would "understand" her despite the shitload of problems he’s already having. Even Charlotte and Rouge called her out on this.
Rouge: "Up to her last moments, she truly saw no one but herself."
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: For 100 years, by taking the contract from Susie Elford, Lime has made people dance for her amusement without suffering from the punishment she should receive. But in Sirius' Conclusion, she is caught and got taken to a crueler hell for all the mess she had created. It actually turns into an Alas, Poor Villain moment when she remembers her Freudian Excuse.
  • The Man Behind the Man: Turns out, she's been secretly manipulating Ashe's mental state for a long, long time, as well as the conditions for everyone to meet at the mansion in the first place.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Throughout the game, Lime is shown to manipulate the residents of the mansion for her amusement. This is escalated to the point where Lime is shown to be the one who manipulated most of the events that would lead to the characters' tragic past and their reason for going to Dorothy's mansion.
  • Meaningful Rename: She renamed herself after the first thing she received from the outside world when she was still human, Lime. Probably a Japanese number pun, too. As 016 backwards can be read as "Raimu".
  • Playful Cat Smile: Often smiles like a cat as a part of her deliberate cuteness.
  • Playing with Fire: Her primary weapon is to use fire, the same thing that killed her as a human.
  • Rape as Backstory: It is implied that she, as a human, was used as a sex toy by the villagers that imprisoned her.
  • Self-Harm: She will and has injured herself in an attempt to "understand others", most notably in her proper debut scene to Claire and during her first meeting with Sheila and Coco by imitating their manner of death (drowning and stabbed to death respectively).
  • Sweet Tooth: Seems to enjoy sweets as much as Claire, if her gingerbread house Fantasy Space and and the whole cake house space like the one from Hansel and Gretel in Sirius’ Conclusion are any indication.
  • Token Evil Teammate: In a group of evil demons, Lime seems the most determined to wreak the most havoc and traumatize Noel to the point where they're on the same level of misery.
  • Villainous Breakdown: While she first appears to treat her punishment in a Dissonant Serenity way, casually explaining what will be done to her in a cheerful manner and all, it turns out her insanity has reached even a higher height and she starts ranting about she’s always doomed to suffer towards fate itself, before she seems to resign and affirm that she just wants to be loved one more time. The whole sequence stuns both Rouge and Zizel for a moment.
  • Villainous Friendship: With Charlotte, though there are hints of it being one-sided on Charlotte's part.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: She was Born into Slavery and imprisoned in a facility where she watched her fellow prisoners be killed, and she is indicated to have been experimented on, beaten, and raped. All she wanted was a normal life, but just when she thought she was getting out, she was burned at the stake. As a demon, she is forced to relive her death every single night. This made her desire to force others to suffer the same misery she went through, hoping that once she does make someone as miserable as she is, that person can finally understand her.

    ??? (Spoilers

Rouge

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/17e3c8b1_a698_4c82_bbd1_95ca27261d9f.png
"In the end, it's only in fairy tales that kind people get to win."

A prideful high-level demon who rules the surrounding area around the mansion. Like Zizel, she is purebred, and both have known each other for a long time.

  • The Alcoholic: Alcohol is everywhere in her fantasy space, to the point where she's sitting on a champagne tower when Claire first meets her.
  • Big Bad: Subverted. She is the leader of the four demons and runs their activities in the mansion, but she herself is actually apathetic to the whole ordeal. Lime is the one setting everything up.
  • Fantastic Racism: Due to her status as a Purebred, she’s openly derogatory towards the Haters, seeing herself as superior to the other demons, and dislikes being talked about behind her back by such "lower beings".
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Her left hairtie is black, while her right hairtie is red plaid.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's prideful, only accepts expensive things as gifts, and is very sharp-tongued. But she will only act if it's due to her job, unlike Lime. She also has a soft spot for Noel, and her harshness on him is to urge him to act and put an end to his own suffering.
  • Makeup Is Evil: Subverted; She wears visible makeup and has her nails painted, but she is the Token Good Teammate.
  • Meaningful Name: Rouges are red powders or cream used in cosmetics, and she visibly wears lipstick. It also means "Red" in France.
  • Princess Curls: At the end of her Girlish Pigtails.
  • Something about a Rose: Besides alcohol, roses can be found in her fantasy space as well. It's also one of the only gift she will accept.
Rouge: "Well, so you do have some sense. Roses are beautiful, just like myself!"
  • Token Good Teammate: Despite being the "leader" of a group of demons actively makes bets and entertains themselves with Claire's demise, Rouge is the only one rooting for Noel's happiness.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's hard to talk about her without mentioning her relation to Noel and other demons.
  • Wine Is Classy: Her image is often attached to red wine.

Other Demons

    Invective
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/33e999ce_a184_4632_abd7_6e3dc9451cb0.jpeg
"Just say a word, and that body shall be mine."

A haughty Hater demon who possessed Claire in Wilardo's route. She was the previous owner of the mansion our main characters are stuck in and a portrait of her can be found near the storage. Her real identity is Maria Ramsey, one of the former masters of the cursed mansion.

  • Bandaged Face: Wears bandages that wrap around her head, forming an "x" over her face, covering the sulfuric acid burns she had endured as a human.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: She backs off from stealing Claire’s body despite being very aggressive about it earlier after Claire shows her genuine kindness and sympathy.
  • Demonic Possession: She possessed Claire’s mouth after she opened the cursed chest, and wanted to take over her whole body, too.
  • Grand Theft Me: Her ultimate goal. She's only strong enough to take Claire's mouth and vocal cords, though.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Insecure about her appearance and position, Invective becomes very jealous of the Purebreds. Fittingly, unlike other demons, she has green eyes.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Once Claire protects her from the giant Monster and shows sympathy for her scarred face, she decides to give up on snatching Claire’s body. She is shown to smile softly as Claire and Wilardo leave her fantasy space.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: Claimed to be one when she stopped pursuing Claire's body. It's not all talk either; A mere seconds later, she revealed her face as a human and it’s definitely a good-looking one.
  • Meaningful Name: "Invective" means "insulting, abusive, or highly critical language". So does her Japanese name. Guess what she made Claire said when she’s possessed?
  • Ojou: She is very haughty and expected to be treated like royalty. Considering that she previously owned the mansion on Mount Rebecca where our cast resides, she may have been one when alive as well.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: She's only called Invective in-game, since it's the name she gave when asked. Her real name is Maria.
  • Trauma Button: She freaks out over the smell of acid, since she was splashed with the thing when alive.

    Sheila
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0913d739_5631_4ccb_9cc5_8f795b8f90d1.png

A Hater demon who takes on the form of a mermaid. She stays in the underwater fantasy space, and regularly requests for the characters to collect her scales after she lost them.

  • Nice Girl: Although her first appearance was not that great, she’s actually really polite when asking for us to find her scales.
  • Our Mermaids Are Different: She's a demon who takes the form of a mermaid, because she was drowned to death in her past life.

    Coco

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4b34b55a_548d_41b8_b8bd_31afcdae7afe.png

A Hater demon who appears in the Deep Sea Space shop in the Bonus Stage. She can increase characters' stats in return for Rainbow Crystals.

  • Amazing Technicolor Population: Her skin color is a light aqua, leaning toward blue.
  • Horned Humanoid: Has slightly curled, tan-colored horns on each side of her head.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: When she was a human, she and another woman fell in love with the same man. Her rival in love stabbed her in the gut, and she died a slow, painful death as her rival stood over her, laughing. The gruesome demise fueled her hate for humans, causing her to be reborn into a Hater demon.
  • Shrinking Violet: Coco is rather reserved and even a bit shy compared to her coworkers Lucy. Does not mean she doesn’t have her own manic side, though.
  • Stripperiffic: While we have yet to see her lower body, on the upper part she only wears what looks like a bikini top. Definitely skimpy for a game where everyone dresses very modestly.
  • Those Two Girls: As the two managers of the Deep Sea Space shop, she and Lucy are always together. Coco does have her debut solo though.

    Lucy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/392fc391_de4e_4c46_aca6_3f294ff1dcad.png

A Hater demon who appears in the Deep Sea Space shop in the Bonus Stage. She can reset your stats and trade them for Rainbow Crystals, which are required for some sub-events.

  • Eyes Always Shut: So far, she has never opened her eyes.
  • Genki Girl: Has a bubbly, hyperactive personality in contrast to Coco.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Ties her hair into two pigtails and proclaims to be in charge of "cuteness".
  • Horned Humanoid: Her horns are smaller compared to Coco, but still noticeable.
  • Human Sacrifice: When she was a human, she was sacrificed for the prosperity of a depopulating town.
  • Those Two Girls: As the two managers of the Deep Sea Space shop, she and Coco are always together.

Backstory Characters

    Patricia

Patricia Miller-Levine

A famous singer and the mother of Noel, who killed herself due to the cruelty of her husband Nicholas.
  • Domestic Abuse: Hinted to be the victim of this from her husband Nicholas, and the reason why she killed herself.
  • Driven to Suicide: She hanged herself because of her husband being too cruel for her to handle.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Noel refers to her as a kind, sweet person who was loved by everyone.
  • Posthumous Character: She hanged herself before the story began.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Her role mainly extends to her suicide, but it affected both Nicholas and Noel; the former forced the latter to dress up as her and abused him further, while the latter is still haunted by it, and it forms a major part of his character.
  • Walking Spoiler: At first, all that is known about her is that she is a famous singer who committed suicide. It is only later when she is revealed to be the mother of Noel and husband of Nicholas.

    Mayor Nicholas

Nicholas Levine

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/432ee5ac_0416_4b12_b6c7_71bdb1944fc1.jpeg

The Mayor of the town and the true culprit of the massacre in the mansion. He is the leader of the witch hunts and sight to blame Dorothy for his crimes. He is also the father of Noel.

  • Abusive Parents: To Noel. After his wife committed suicide, he forced Noel to dress up as her, denying him as his own person, and tried to keep him confined inside limited areas in his own house.
  • Asshole Victim: After being a huge Mayor Pain with a substantial body count, he ultimately gets shot by Dorothy and dies of blood loss.
  • Domestic Abuse: His wife Patricia killed herself because of his cruelty and selfishness, likely implying that he abused her.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: On a very, very twisted side of love: he couldn’t handle the loss of his wife Patricia (despite being the cause for it), and tried to groom his son Noel into a Replacement Goldfish for her.
  • Green-Eyed Monster
  • Hate Sink: He is a corrupt mayor who led his village in hunting down witches to be used as lab rats and sex toys, led his troops to kill Dorothy and then massacres them himself and pinned the blame on Dorothy, drove his wife to suicide, and abused his son Noel. Overall, a disgusting man.
  • Mayor Pain: He used his position to lead the horrific witch hunts, killed his own troops in the mansion, and is an abusive father to Noel.
  • Posthumous Character: He died of blood loss in his battle with Dorothy before the game began.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: The citizens of the town saw him as a righteous leader who protected them from witches by conducting the Witch Hunt. Yeah, him, the guy we all know and hate.
  • Walking Spoiler: At first, he is simply portrayed as a victim of the mansion massacre. It is only later revealed that he is the true culprit, the abusive father of Noel, and a bad man overall.
  • Wife Husbandry: Tried to make his son Noel into a "new" Patricia by changing his name and dressing him up in the late Patricia's clothes. He ultimately failed, though, due to Noel's disappearance.

    Fiona Elford
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/02cf4dfc_90ec_4ac1_97ac_3dc51aac8917.jpeg
"Welcome to our world. Thanks for being born, Claire.“

Mother of Claire and daughter of Dorothy Elford. She died at the hands of either the townspeople or Nicholas during the "witch hunts".

  • Like Mother, Like Daughter: Shares many similarities in personality with Claire, including their kindness and love for sweets.
  • Missing Mom: She passed away long before in the same Witch Hunt with Sirius' parents.
  • Motherly Side Plait: To emphasize her motherly aura. And like many other cases, she died.
  • Nice Girl: While her only appearance is in one of the memories, she was shown to be a very calm, caring and kind woman, and even offered Charlotte - her pact partner - a muffin at one point.

    Ashe's Parents
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/f064fe6c_38ff_412f_98db_7777fb9cb1a4.png
From left to right: Ashe, Lilia, Ashe’s mother, Ashe’s father

Ashe's parents, whom he is eager to resurrect after they were killed in a fire.

    Lilia Bradley
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5e6ce76d_733b_4454_b813_2b0efbbf9f6a.png

Ashe's younger sister, whom he is eager to ressurect after she was killed in a fire.

  • Annoying Younger Sibling: She is a Bratty Half-Pint towards Ashe.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Is loud and clingy, especially towards Ashe, who caves in to her every demand. Justified in that Lilia is ill and has to spend long amounts of time alone in a hospital, and doesn't want to be left alone again.
  • Delicate and Sickly: She seems to have some kind of coughing fit and lungs disease, with symptoms similar to Noel's conditions. Ashe attending medical school and trying to follow their father’s footsteps was to find a way to cure her.
  • Identical Stranger: Looks strangely similar to young Claire, and according to Ashe, if she were alive, she would be the same age as Claire. This ends up saving Claire’s life in Sirius’ Conclusion, since Ashe is unable to killed someone who bears resemblance to his lost sister.
  • Kill the Cutie: She was killed in the burning house along with her parents.
  • Nightmare Face: Portrays a disfigured face in Ashe’s nightmares.
  • Shared Family Quirks: She tends to point her left index finger up as she plays coy, just like her brother does.
  • Spoiled Sweet: She's definitely spoiled rotten, especially by Ashe, but some extra comics reveal she would've been kind and generous if she ever came to meet other children her age.
  • Sweet Tooth: Seems to love pastries in particular, asking Ashe for them more than once.

    Gramps

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/8de89591_d1ea_44c5_90bc_8b8cd3d8989f.png

Wilardo's guardian figure, a kind but wacky flower seller.

  • Death Seeker: Searched for the Dark Lily, the demonic artifact that would allow him to pass away, for many years.
  • Dirty Old Man: Isn't above ogling a young thief's "big'uns".
  • Freudian Excuse: The immortality has worn him down too much for him to handle, and he used Wilardo, his adopted child, to free his suffering. That said, even when his determination solidified as he had Wilardo pick the Dark Lily for him, he immediately regretted it and called him back, only for Wilardo to already be charmed by the flower’s otherworldly beauty.
  • Nice Guy: While the original purpose was to use Wilardo to pick the Dark Lily for him, Gramps actually cared for the boy just like his son, and he also let a young thief go (even giving her money) after she confessed she did it to help her sickly mother.
  • No Body Left Behind: After consuming the Dark Lily, all that left of him was a pile of ash.
  • No Name Given: He’s only called "Gramps".
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Implied to be the case with him and his son.
  • Parental Substitute: For Wilardo, whom he picked up after an encounter. Actually, he named Wilardo after his own deceased son.
  • Posthumous Character: He died 500 years ago, merely a night after Wilardo got the immortality. As such, he only appears in Wilardo’s flashback.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He’s 1000 by the time he died.
  • Regretful Traitor: Even though he did use Wilardo to pick the Dark Lily, he ultimately didn’t want to go through with the plan and tried to call Wilardo back. However, the rethink came too late, so he could only apologize to Wilardo in his final letter. At first Wilardo reasonably resented Gramps, but over time he came to understand Gramps’ suffering and forgave him.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: He tricked Wilardo into picking the Dark Lily and getting cursed with immortality so that he could escape immortality himself by passing it on to Wilardo.

    Matty

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/f446f5b6_6991_4254_8c29_3d164bd0a691.png

Ashe's friend from school, who turned on him one day and killed his family.

  • Abusive Parents: According to him, his parents drove him into exhaustion in order to get him into med school, something he didn't even want to do in the first place, all while constantly comparing him to Ashe.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He acted as a nice friend to Ashe and normal high school kid, but is really a violent killer who killed Ashe's family.
  • Commonality Connection: Bonded with Ashe due to their shared goals of getting into med school. He took it in a far different direction than Ashe did, however...
  • False Friend: One of Ashe's best friends and the covert arsonist who burned Ashe's family to death.
  • Hate Sink: Despite seeming to be a friend of Ashe, he shows his true loathsome colors when he kills Ashe's family for no reason other than Ashe annoying him. This action is what turned Ashe into an Ax-Crazy killer.
  • Never My Fault: Blames Ashe for the burning of the Bradley household: his reasoning being that, if Ashe hadn't been so annoying and arrogant, Matty would've never been pushed to the point of trying to take him down. Ashe believes him.
  • Pyromaniac: The perpetrator of the serial arson cases happening in his hometown, culminating in the complete burning of the Bradley household and the orphaning of Ashe Bradley.
  • The Resenter: Ashe's status as The Ace caused Matty's already implied to be abusive parents to be way more demanding of him. The pressure of being constantly compared to Ashe eventually drove him into a state of neurosis.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He only appears in Ashe's flashback scenes, but his murder of Ashe's family is what drove Ashe to seek to travel to the mansion to revive them, at any cost.
  • Tall Poppy Syndrome: He felt like he couldn't ever compare to Ashe, leading him to believe all he could do was rob Ashe of his every reason to succeed.
  • Teens Are Monsters: Serial arsonist and murderer, all at around 15 years of age.
  • The Unfavorite: Mentions his parents seem to dislike him. Whether this is true or simply a biased view of his isn't clearly specified.

    Richard

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c1cc618d_2e45_448c_b8c2_b9e5343043fc.png
"Spare me the studying, I'm not even going to college..."

One of Ashe's two close friends from school along with Matty.

  • Book Dumb: He could not care less about school and doesn’t intend to enter college, citing his distaste for studying as his reason.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Often compares himself to his two brainy friends and seems to be insecure about his less studious nature despite his nonchalant demeanor.
  • Idiot Hair: A small one at the top of his head.
  • Nice Guy: He may love teasing his friends, but he cares for them genuinely. After the incident with Ashe’s family, he put the blame on himself for not noticing Matty’s problems and tried telling Ashe that he could always talk to him about anything. Though seeing how Ashe is now, it’s clear he rejected the offer.
  • Red Herring: Richard’s actions and wordings were presented in a suspicious way that would direct the arsonist’s identity onto him up to the very end, until Matty is revealed to be the true serial murderer.

    "Papa"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0bffd649_7876_4f71_b5b7_73192281ec75.png

Charlotte's adoptive father who raised her to be a weapon of war, then abandoned her when she got sick with the Black Death.

  • Fat Bastard: Overweight and a disgusting man who sees Charlotte no more than a tool.
  • Good Smoking, Evil Smoking: He is seen holding a cigar.
  • Hate Sink: He used Charlotte as a Child Soldier only to abandon her the second she catches The Black Death, calling her hideous all the while and acting like she is little better than a plague rat. This betrayal is what turned her into an Ax-Crazy killer.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He only appears in a single flashback, but him molding Charlotte into a Child Soldier only to cruelly abandon her once she becomes deathly ill is the reason she became a hateful demon in the first place.
