Schicksal

The Schicksal Organization was founded in Europe during the Middle Ages. Back then, it was a religious order which held crusades against the Honkai forces and offered many kingdoms their protection in exchange for wealth. They're known for their "Valkyrie squads", powerful female warriors that fight in the frontline against the Honkai, as well as advancing the use and technology of Stigmata. Over the centuries, it has spread its influence to Asia, America and other places, and become very technologically advanced.

Leadership

    Otto Apocalypse

Voiced by: Zhao Lu * (Chinese), Akira Ishida (Japanese) Megumi Ogata (Young, Japanese)

His appearance during the Kolosten arc
The Archbishop of Schicksal, old friend of Kallen Kaslana, and "grandfather" of Theresa Apocalypse. Also called "Overseer Otto". A genius mind who made technological breakthroughs for the organization, but his motives and presence are undisclosed to most of its members.

He's first shown in-story in Chapter Everlasting Memory (Theresa's side story) which takes place around 40 years before the present, then in the main story in Chapter 5 where she monitors Kiana's adventures, before showing up more after Ch. 7. He also accompanies Fu Hua in her side story "The Forgotten".

  • Affably Evil: One of Otto's main character traits is how pleasant he can carry himself in spite of the unpleasant vileness he is singularly capable of causing. He's polite and jovial to everyone he talks with, but he also has an extremely callous disregard for all human life that isn't Kallen – or to be more precise, while he is capable of recognizing the value of human life, he is just as capable of disregarding it if it gets in the way of his goals to revive Kallen. It becomes obvious after Chapter 25-EX; long after he shot Fu Hua in Chapter 9 for getting in the way of his plans, Otto still thinks of her as a friend, and sincerely hopes she is doing well in the present.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Despite the sheer number of tragedies he was behind, his death in "Thus Spoke Apocalypse" is depicted this way, going to great lengths to show how important Kallen was to his life, to the extent that he willingly sacrificed his own existence just to create an alternate timeline where she lived past the mistake he caused which killed her in the first place.
  • All Your Powers Combined: With his Divine Key, "Void Archives", he can mimic any of the other Divine Keys and their abilities, albeit not to their full strength (for example, it cannot replicate their 0th power). Judgment of Shamash is what he prefers to use the most in combat, but in his boss fights in Chapter 27 and 28 it’s shown he is very proficient in switching between them as well; using Abyss Flower, Oath of Judah and Fenghuang Down on top of Shamash.
  • Alternate Self: World 2 in Chapter 11 shows a particular scenario where he ended up running an orphanage alongside Theresa, becoming a legitimately good priest and honoring Kallen's wishes. He may still be doing some questionable things outside the orphanage, but he's ultimately well-meaning. Basically, he's akin to Cocolia in the "real world"; this, as well as how "Joachim" gives his last respects to Otto when the latter dies to his wounds to protect the orphanage, would later inspire Bronya to make peace with her foster mother.
  • Angelic Abomination: In Chapter 28, when Kiana and Durandal face him, Otto reveals he has "ascended" into a Honkai-based lifeform which surpass ordinary Herrschers - he appears as a white-and-golden-and-black humanoid Honkai Beast with golden wings made out of Fenghuang Down's feathers, and capable of facing Kiana and Durandal, at the height of their powers, to a standstill.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Despite the many supernatural phenomena and things that he has seen and learned throughout his long life, he seems to deny the existence or concept of a "soul". Celestial Hymn (Theresa)'s bio mentions that he once saw "Kallen" in Theresa, but he quickly denied what he saw as he didn't believe in souls (he once claimed that science cannot explain its nature or existence). Then the bio says "Perhaps after 500 years of conflicting cycles, the man finally lost track of what he was looking for." He would later backtrack on this, admitting that Kiana, Durandal, and Theresa have indeed inherited Kallen’s spirit in their actions as they go against him.
  • Arranged Marriage: One scene in ch. 21 takes place in the past, when the Schicksal Overseer at the time, Otto's father, talked to him about the problem with Kallen, the Kaslana family, and how they may endanger Schicksal's reputation. After Kallen was brought back from the Far East for her rebellion, the Overseer told Otto that she's going to be executed for her crimes; but he offered a way out for this situation, and that is to make Otto marry her and bring her under the Apocalypse family. While Otto's father said that this is what Otto has always wished for, Otto himself thought this marriage wouldn't be a real, happy one; but he was at least okay with it if it can keep Kallen alive. However, when Otto explained it to her, Kallen herself objected to it, stating she'd rather die than being kept in shackles.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: The animated short "Thus Spoke Apocalypse" shows Otto reaching the Imaginary Tree and creating an alternate timeline where Kallen never died.
  • Barehanded Blade Block: In the Elan Platinus supplementary comic, when Kallen was about to be struck by Eleanor's spear (implied to be Black Orchid, one of the 10th Divine Key models Keys of Domination), he stopped her by grabbing the spear's blade with his bare hand, causing it to bleed. He fainted a few moments later, however.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Part of why he developed feelings for Kallen was because she was the first person at his age who's not only nice to him but also complimented his genius.
  • Big Bad: The closest person this series has to one. A good number of problems in the present can be traced back to his deeds, and he's got his own Evil Plan for the whole war against the Honkai.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Played with. In in the 2nd Eruption comic, when the first Herrscher (Anti-Entropy's leader of the time, Walter "Welt" Young) was about to finish the 2nd Herrscher, Otto (in a disguise with a mask) stopped him and took him down, claiming that the 2nd Herrscher is vital to his plans.
    • In general, back in the 15th century, he generally would come to help Kallen when she's in trouble. The biggest one is when Kallen was about to be shot by her friend-turned-Honkai Beast, he came to her rescue and shot the beast with a replica of Judgment of Shamash before it could hit Kallen. The last time he did it, however, it ended up with her death instead.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: There is something... utterly bizarre, alien, and messy within his mindscape. On top of being one of the most intelligent characters in the game, the logic behind his actions is incomprehensible to friend and foe alike. His moral stance is equally incomprehensible, as he will do both heroic and utterly evil deeds with equal ease depending on the situation. Fu Hua's testimony about his nature to Theresa at the beginning of Chapter 26 sums up his random personality really nicely, given that she is one of the fallen victims of his actions.
Fu Hua: I've seen him doing good things, and I've seen him doing evil things. I've been a victim of his betrayal, and the recipient of his kindness. His good and bad deeds can hardly be spoken, but it makes for a confusing relationship with him.
  • Body Backup Drive: The Second Eruption comic reveals that this is how he managed to live for hundreds of years: he creates increasingly more powerful bodies to inhabit, in case his previous one proves insufficient to his needs. It gets played for comedy when he screwed up during the body-changing process and his new body became that of his child selfnote , although he got it fixed later. One episode of Cooking with Valkyries shows that he sometimes goes out while using his child self's body in order to spy on Theresa.
  • Brainwashing for the Greater Good: He healed the original Kiana's injuries using a soulium treatment, but in addition he used it as an opportunity to wipe her memories clean, even though there was no good reason to go that far. He justifies this to her rescuer, Ragna, by stating that by giving her a new identity he's "freeing her" from her family's curse and assures she'll one day eventually get her revenge on him for deceiving her. In truth, he's previously admited many times that he's really had his eyes on Kiana for her Schariac Holy Blood and her potential as a herrscher killer long before she was even born and saw this as a chance to turn her into a loyal war asset for Schicksal and his own plans.
  • Cain and Abel: Chapter 28 shows Otto was the Abel to the Cain of his siblings, back during the 15th century. Otto spent his childhood trying to get away from his siblings scheming for their own gains in the family and in Schicksal, which he was mostly successful in... until the day Kallen was slated to be executed, at which point Otto became desperate enough to listen to his sister’s scheme. Even Void Archives noted how even though Otto had expertly avoided its manipulations, he finally willingly stepped into a scheme for Kallen.
  • Call-Forward:
    • In the supplementary comic about the Divine Keys, a younger Otto shows up with a narration stating he didn't believe what his father said, that the Honkai is the true enemy that will wipe out humanity, and he believes that it's "something else". The following neutral narration says "Of course, that enemy would be mankind itself"—shown over Otto running on what seems to be the remains of a large-scale battlefield.
    • Back when he was a child, he thought making Kallen's father somehow alive again would make her happy, and he willingly sold his soul to the "mysterious golden cube" just for that. When he attempted to actually resurrect Kallen's father, however, she stopped him (with a tight slap for good measure), saying that he died to save the two of them and that she just wanted to honor his sacrifice. After 500 or so years, it looked like he didn't learn at all... Even until the end of his life, Otto chooses to sacrifice his entire existence to create a new world for Kallen.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: In the 2nd Eruption comic, Otto, while wearing a mask and dressing himself in a white suit and top hat, interrupts Welt's finishing blow on Sirin, allowing Benares to snatch her away and escape to the Moon. He reasons that he still needs the Void Queen to completely awaken so his plan can come to fruition. When Siegfried arrives at the scene and starts trading blows with Otto, the Overseer gets pissed by his hotheaded behaviour, but ultimately decides to retreat since Siegfried is also a crucial part to his plan.
  • Cavalry Betrayal: He stops Herrscher of the Void from killing Fu Hua in Chapter 9. When it becomes clear that Fu Hua has lost all faith in him after everything that happened, however, he then goes on to personally (seemingly) kill her.
  • Cool Key: In its dormant form, his Divine Key Void Archives takes form of an actual key. When he chooses to access its power, it takes him into a Mental World set in the insides of a giant library. Inside it lies vast amounts of knowledge, especially from the old civilization.
  • Covert Pervert: In Elan Platinus, it's shown he made a lot of fancy outfits for Kallen. She mentally wonders why he made so many of them and how he knows her size well.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Discussed when he is discussing a deal with the man from World Serpent in chapter 17. Kevin states Otto and Schicksal can either submit to their request, or be destroyed. Otto admits Schicksal will be defeated if his side tries fighting World Serpent, but it will cost both of them their precious time they need to finish their projects before "the End of Days".
  • Deal with the Devil:
    • Back when he was a child, he stumbled upon a strange golden cube his father kept inside the chapel. When he touched it, the cube suddenly spoke to him, saying that it could help him with anything he wanted to do if he offered his soul. He agreed to it (he wanted to try to resurrect Kallen's father, who died a few days before), and then the contents of that cube flowed out and entered his body. That "thing" is one of the Divine Keys, Void Archives, which has its own conscience and becomes Otto's "inner voice", who would persuade Otto to use its functions whenever he faces a problem. Played with in that, Void Archives need Otto’s express permission to do anything, and Otto is smart enough to avoid its manipulations and traps for the next 500 years.
    • The "Sanka Saga" event reveals Otto has done this in this timeline, with the Previous Era Herrscher of Corruption trapped in the Purple Box, plotting to keep Kallen alive by having the Herrscher manipulate her into driving off the Schicksal agents who were meant to take her back go Europenote  and trying to watch over the village that Sakura left behind in her stead; Kallen would later make herself immortal with the "Zakti Rune of Deva" and find a way to bring Sakura back from the dead.
  • Disguised in Drag: One time in Elan Platinus, he disguised as a woman to distract some guards to help with Kallen's rogue work. It's also depicted in one of the special Stigma in-game.
  • Doting Grandparent: His audio diary in Everlasting Memory game mode notes he might've doted on Theresa quite a lot (like making her bitter gourd juice or knitting her clothes).
  • Dramatic Irony: His whole reason for his actions, i.e prolonging the Honkai War, causing thousands of people to die meaningless deaths, experimenting on children, and manipulating people around him, was all to bring a woman he was in love with back from death. Unbeknownst to him, the woman didn't even like him that way. In fact, she was in love with a shrine priestess, and when she was brought Back from the Dead 10 years from the present (in the special story of Anniversary Summer Event), she didn't feel like being brought back alive and then arranged her (second) death. However, later events would downplay this as it’s revealed Otto is less interested in winning her love and more invested with undoing the unfairness of her death.
  • Duel Boss: In Chapter 27, Durandal finally decides to confront Otto, leading to a one-on-one duel.
  • Enemy Mine: Chapter 17's prologue shows Otto's dealing with a certain man from World Serpent (Kevin) back in ch. 16. Kevin wants Otto to help him with his Project Stigma, but Otto asks for something as a "price": the "beacon" for the 2nd Divine Key, the "Key of Infinity", which Otto needs to use its Zeroth Power to reach the "Imaginary Tree". Otto promises that if he can get the beacon, World Serpent can get all the help they need from Schicksal. Kevin asks him what he can give in return; Otto offers to give Void Archives, claiming it can be a good "puppet" for controlling Schicksal after he leaves. Throughout the conversation, the narration shows how much Otto can understand Kevin's gestures and words, as well as how he can steer the conversation to benefit him, something Gray Serpent once pointed out about him. Otto later notes that this deal may have far-reaching consequences for the world and everyone involved.
Otto: You have a duty. I have a wish. None of us will be getting anything we want if the Final Herrscher arrives. *Both* of us are losing time. Instead of war, I believe... a partnership would be a far better choice.
  • Evil Mentor: He is this to Durandal. In a strange twist, Otto actually is a proper mentor to her, displaying none of the controlling behavior he exhibits with Theresa as he raises Durandal into a Valkyrie of Schicksal, to the point that even after Otto starts his Evil Plan in the Kolosten arc, Durandal is still willing to talk things out with him. Although it's revealed later that Otto essentially kidnapped Durandal as a child when she was still Kiana Kaslana. Durandal herself doesn't hold any sort of grudge against Otto for what he's done to her, and is still trying to talk Otto out of his Evil Plan until his death.
  • Evil Plan: His main goal is "reviving Kallen by any means possible", even if he has to endanger and doom countless people to their deaths.
    • To be specific, his centuries of using science to revive Kallen proved mostly fruitless (the closest he got to it, Theresa, grew up to be her own person), so he decided to turn to the Honkai itself for clues. In the 2nd Honkai War, he witnessed Sirin, the Herrscher of the Void, wielding additional Herrscher Cores to empower herself, one of them being identified as Gem of Serenity (Herrscher Core of Death) which Sirin attempted to use to revive her mother, although she failed at it (her mother became a mindless zombie). This, along with the info he got from the "Honkai God", gave him an idea: make Sirin be controllable by him so she can use the Gem of Serenity's power for his ends; this is why he would try to save Sirin whenever he had the chance. After Sirin faced her demise at the end of the 2nd Eruption, Otto recovered both Sirin's core and the Gem of Serenity. Sirin's core was eventually used on Experiment K-423, while his attempts at planting Gem of Serenity on other people were failures, until he uses said gem (and a lot of Honkai energy) to awaken K-423 to become Herrscher of the Void. Seeing how the 3rd and 4th Herrscher can become controllable with good old Power of Friendship, Otto's next step is to pit her against her friends to make her able to control the Herrscher power with her own mind.
    • As of the "London Holiday" comic and chapter 15 of the game, however, his attention has been seemingly shifted to the 2nd Divine Key and the "Imaginary Tree". Chapters 26 and 27 reveal his current plan: he intends to manipulate the Imaginary Tree to essentially reset Earth to 500 years in the past. This will allow Kallen to live, at the cost of the lives of everyone on the planet outside of the town where he puts this plan in motion, which happens to be where Shicksal's original headquarters was located. Chapter 28 reveals he is lying, mostly; rather than sacrifice everything outside of Kolosten, he sacrifices himself in order to create an Alternate Timeline where Kallen lives. The whole 'sacrifice the world for Kallen' speech was simply to motivate Kiana and Durandal into attacking him so he could harness their powers and reach the Imaginary Tree.
  • Evil Running Good: He was originally a half-decent man at heart, and he has been working for centuries to fight the Honkai phenomenon, but not only did he employ various questionable deeds to that end, his true motive isn't all good: he wants to revive his old crush, Kallen, by any means necessary. He is actually prolonging the war against the Honkai as he believes the Honkai (a.k.a "God"), and specifically the Herrscher of Death, hold the key to reviving her. This directly caused Schicksal's American branch to splinter off into Anti-Entropy when the original Welt and his companions realized that Otto was not fully dedicated to defeating the Honkai once and for all and he is even actively sabotaging the war effort with plans to extend it until he has everything he needs from the Herrschers to revive Kallen.
  • Excessive Mourning: All of the tragedies he caused were the result of him being unable to let go of the mistake he made which killed Kallen, which occurred 500 years ago.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: He switches out his loose side plait for a much tighter ponytail when he makes good on the final phase of his plan and heads towards the Imaginary Tree, indicating that he's finally ready to take direct action after previously only being a manipulator.
  • Expy: He shares quite a lot of basic characteristics with Neon Genesis Evangelion's Gendo Ikari, as part of the game's many Eva influences. Like Gendo, his role is as the supreme leader of the organization the heroes are on, the scientist who've made many technological breakthroughs for the group, who has an ulterior motive of trying to revive his most beloved person, and is willing to doom countless people for it while hiding behind a campaign to fight against the "monsters" of the story. Like Gendo and Rei, Otto also has cloned his beloved's genes, resulting in Theresa. His first scene in the supplementary comic is also an Eva reference, to the meeting of the high members of the NERV.
  • Foreshadowing: In one of the "files" in the "Thunderous Sanction" mini event, he orders Amber to start the preparation for "it". When she questions him about it, he reminds her that Durandal and Rita are not the only S-rank Valkyries they have – sure enough, Sushang shows up later in the story.
  • Faking the Dead: At the beginning of Chapter 20, Theresa and Bronya suspect he's gone AWOL after Hua(?) "murders" him and ransacks Schicksal's HQ. This is confirmed in Chapter 21, after he returns with a new body and briefly chats with Hua(?), he intentionally faked his death and went dark afterwards. Sure enough, at the beginning of Chapter 23, Durandal and Rita mention Otto has been missing after the incident, confirming Theresa and Bronya's suspicions for the time being, until his return in Chapter 25-EX.
  • Fatal Flaw: His inability to overcome his 500 years of guilt after he accidentally killed Kallen. He could've become a legitimate hero as one of the main contributors in the battle against the Honkai, but he's willing to toss all that away and become the villain just to revive Kallen by any means possible, which leads to him committing atrocities ranging from creating clones based on her DNA to reawakening Kiana as the Herrscher of the Void in order to create Herrschers fighting for humanity and utilizing its power for his own ends. This guilt is taken to its logicial conclusion near the end of the Kolosten arc: even after being defeated by Kiana and Durandal, he won't budge on their plea, and he's still insisting on sacrificing his life in order to save Kallen from her cruel fate, at which he succeeds. "Thus Spoke Apocalypse" shows his headspace in full, revealing him to be a pathetic man who is almost entirely defined by his childhood memories with Kallen.
  • Freudian Excuse: As much of a monster as he is, there is no denying the fact he has no one his age who appreciates him in any meaningful manner, his parents didn't care about him and considered him weak in comparison to his siblings, most of whom would rather take advantage and use him for their own ends all make it so so the only one he genuinely loves at all is Kallen, her and her alone. Thusly he will do everything to save her, no matter what atrocities he might make, with no one else to calm him down. Even as it is shown that Otto is capable of developing some sort of attachment to other people (albeit in twisted manner) Kallen casts a large shadow to his mind and his ability to form bonds, and he can disregard any potential bond and value he places in other people in favor of fulfilling what he perceives to be his duty in “correcting” Kallen’s death.
  • Gathering Steam: The T version of his Stigma allow the user to accumulate "charges" with normal attacks, up to 3. After that, the next Charged Attack will become more powerful, upon which the stack resets. The 2 Set Bonus of his Stigma also allow said Charged Attack to generate an Area of Effect on hit that increases the lightning elemental damage taken by the enemies that stand on it.
  • Hate Sink: For all his soft-spoken demeanor, occasional light-hearted moments, and genuine good he is capable of doing, Otto is easily one of the most detestable characters in the series, as the supplementary comics and various events highlight his hypocrisy, his ability to callously disregard everyone else around him (even those who trust him) on top of countless atrocities. Even his desire to revive Kallen doesn't serve as a mitigating factor, as it clearly is more of an obsession than actual love. While he is capable of doing good, such as creating a foundation of modern Valkyries and the idea of Herrschers fighting for humanity, all of those positive qualities are generally overshadowed by the pain and misery he has caused for other characters, directly or otherwise, most prominently allowing Sirin to become the Second Herrscher and enabling her destructive rampages. Whereas most of the human cast shows the brightest side of humanity, Otto serves as one of the prime examples on how the Honkai are not the only evil plaguing the world, and how some people can be even worse than the Honkai. That being said, once he enacts his plan in Chapter 25-EX onward it’s shown this trope is subverted; several characters proclaim they don’t view Otto in a completely negative light despite knowing his atrocities, most notably Hua, Theresa, and Durandal, despite all agreeing on how he needs to be stopped. Chapter 28 and subsequently "Thus Spoke Apocalypse" subvert this completely, painting Otto’s life and death in a tragic light.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: For a scant value of "heroic", he ultimately sacrifices his own existence in the alternate timeline he created in order to save Kallen's life.
  • Hidden Depths: It’s very easy to misunderstand Otto’s motives and misjudge the depths of his mindscape. One might assume his The Unfettered and We Have Reserves attitude mean he has Lack of Empathy and falls victim to Evil Cannot Comprehend Good, but Otto is very much capable of forming attachments to other people (even if it’s nowhere as deeply as with Kallen), he simply cuts off and disregards them in favor of what he believes to be more important – Kallen. He is also aware he is far from good; he carries out his atrocities with all the certainty of a criminal who believes nothing can redeem him and no one can forgive him. His Blue-and-Orange Morality starts to make a lot more sense when one realizes he is operating on a Crazy Sane morality and rationality: he has done an unforgiveable crime of causing the death of a woman he loved, so he doesn’t believe he has any goodness left in him and doesn’t bother to justify his actions. Even if he does good, he attributes it to honoring the virtues “which Kallen stood for”, and when he does evil, he attributes it to his own malice; at no point he acknowledges himself as a source of good or a hero. This extremely warped perception of himself is the other main reason (besides his Excessive Mourning of Kallen’s death and wishing to correct it) why he is a villain, and he knows it.
Otto: The malice of this world shall be sundered— by the villain.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Long ago, he didn't acknowledge how Kaslanas always value the lives of others more than their own, in contrast to his complete disregard of other people's lives, which gets Kallen killed by his own plans to rescue her. He goes on to rectify this, as he goes out of his way to raise Durandal, the original Kiana Kaslana, to free her from this supposed "curse" of the Kaslana bloodline.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: Possibly one of the best examples in the game, especially among the ones who earnestly struggles for humanity's survival against the Honkai. Despite his gifted intelligence, in the past he was known for his willingness to make Kallen happy with disregard for innocent bystanders. After losing Kallen to his own mistake, that disregard for others transform into an active willingness to exploit other people for his own benefit, ruthlessly manipulating them and degrading those he cannot control, particularly Siegfried and later Hua. All in all, he is a generally unpleasant person who manipulates and backstabs anyone who trust him for his own benefit; but more importantly, he is the primary source of many problems lingering in the lives of Current Era characters.
  • I Let You Win: Once his supposed Evil Plan of sacrificing the entire world and the current timeline to reset the world back by 500 years so he could change Kallen's fate is revealed, several characters note Otto could have simply enacted it in the shadows with anyone none the wisernote , and if that had happened nobody could have stopped him. The reason that didn't happen is because that is not his true goal. Even then, after it's revealed his actual plan is to sacrifice himself to create an Alternate Timeline for Kallen, it's implied he is still at a point where he could have sacrificed the entire world rather than himself. But he still consciously chooses to sacrifice himself after recognizing the "spirit of Kallen" within Theresa, Durandal and Kiana.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Not that he was ever aware of it, but Kallen never would've returned his feelings as the only person she had ever expressed romantic interest in was Sakura, another woman.
  • Lack of Empathy: He has no real sense of emotional attachment to anyone other than Kallen, which is what makes him so dangerous. Even with Kallen, he has trouble understanding and comprehending her as a person; he doesn't truly grasp Kallen's affection for Sakura and dismisses it as a slight fancy. Chapter 9 of the game reveals he does have a sense of empathy, but it's extremely twisted; he genuinely recognizes Hua as his "old friend" but is all too willing to murder her when it becomes apparent she doesn't agree with him after his Motive Rant. Chapter 28 would go on to show he also recognizes people whom he wronged, as his "dear friends". This goes to show that he does feel guilt for his wrongdoing, but it does not at all temper his actions.
  • Love Makes You Evil: While he was at least a half-decent guy, it's revealed later in Elan Platinus his loyalty falls to Kallen more than to Schicksal itself. When Kallen died, he, in disillusionment, decided to usurp the archbishop position from his father and then purge the (admittedly corrupt) nobilities controlling Schicksal at the time so he can use the organization and its resources to bring Kallen back to life.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Manipulation is basically Otto’s game, and how he primarily interacts with others. Most prominently shown in Chapter 21, even though Hua(?) makes a point of not trusting him after all his atrocities as well as him having killed her, he can still make her listen — he leads her to Kevin, as he says that that man may have the thing that she seeks, i.e her old powers and memories.
  • Master of Disguise: London Holiday reveals he can perfectly pass as someone else as long as he extracts a sample of their DNA and gathers behavioral data on them, then etches both factors into his soulium avatar to create a Doppelgänger. His disguise ends up fooling everyone, from Rita to director Catherine and even Jackal.
  • Mission Control:
    • In Fu Hua's side story "The Forgotten", he becomes one for her as she goes into a Journey to the Center of the Mind to discover her old, forgotten memories.
    • In Chapter 9-EX, he becomes one for Rita when you play as her.
  • Motive Rant: In Chapter 9, he personally comes to Fu Hua to explain his plans: to make Herrscher of the Void (in Kiana's body) fight her closest friends and for her friends to be able to subdue her with The Power of Love, so as to create a "controllable Herrscher" like what happened with the 3rd Herrscher (Mei) and the 4th. He's telling Fu Hua this because her act (fighting Void Herrscher in her friends' stead) goes against his plans and that "she's becoming harder to control" - he expects Hua to understand his actions after listening to his motives.
  • My Skull Runneth Over: In the 2nd Eruption comic, when he meets the "Honkai God" for the first time, said being imparts Otto with vast amounts of knowledge that Otto struggles to hold in; it takes great effort for him to hold on to just a few of it.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Would you trust a guy who has the word Apocalypse for a surname (Aside from the fact that his considerably more heroic granddaughter has the same surname, anyways)? It gets quite apt, too, when he's revealed to be trying to prolong the battle with the Honkai ("Collapse") so that he can one day find the secrets to their power, all so he can use it to revive Kallen.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: He tried to stop Kallen's public execution by releasing a horde of Honkai Beasts to rampage across the city as distraction. Not only did he get a slap from Kallen because she disapproved this, this also led to her being killed by the Honkai Beast he just summoned. In his defense, it was not actually his own plan, but his sister's whom he listened to out of desperation.
  • Nightmare Sequence: He has one in the "Elan Palantinus" comic. After he blocked Eleanor's spear with his bare hand to protect Kallen, he fainted minutes later. It then cuts to a scene in his dreams where it shows his and Kallen's younger selves watching Kallen's father protect them from Honkai Beasts. Then it continues to another scene that shows the funeral of Kallen's father after he used the Judgment of Shamash to slay a huge Honkai Beast; as Otto watched the funeral and Kallen crying over her father's coffin, an "inner voice" speaks to him that Kallen would eventually meet a similar fate - as it cuts to another scene where young Kallen disappears, then when Otto checked inside the coffin, it shows Kallen's dead body. Said voice the offers to help him using the power of 2 "boxes", and then Otto wakes up.
  • Non-Action Guy: It's noted that, among the core families of Schicksal, only his own lacks any (inherent) fighting power against the Honkai while the Kaslana and Schariac families do. However, that's not to say he's totally useless in combat, as his access to Void Archives grants him all sorts of trickeries which allow him to outwit and neutralize physically stronger opponents the same way Fu Hua would with her Fenghuang Down. Durandal states in Chapter 25-EX that even she probably wouldn't be able beat him, which Otto laughs off as Bianka simply being humble, adding that he probably wouldn't be able to win against her in an honorable fight without using some form of trickery to gain an edge. True enough, when they finally do fight for real in Chapter 27, Durandal manages to beat him into submission, but instead of finishing him off she tries to interrogate him for his true motivations, which gives Otto enough time to complete his transformation into a "False God-like Imaginary Being" and use his new gained powers to banish Durandal into the Imaginary Space. Chapter 28 and the following "Thus Spoke Apocalypse" short reveal that he's actually been very combat capable, at least in present time.
  • Nuke 'em: In the 2nd Honkai War, he ordered to nuke the Babylon Tower where Cecilia and the 2nd Herrscher were fighting. Despite Theresa's protests, it eventually happened.
  • Oblivious to Love: Otto seems to have no idea about Sushang's feelings for him.
  • Orcus on His Throne: Rita mentioned in Chapter 9 that he didn't use his "trump cards" at all as everything is still in his control.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: This is what he said to Fu Hua before he shot her dead.
Otto: I didn't lie, Master Jingwei.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He was born and grew up along with Kallen in the 15th century, and is still around nowadays (in 21st century) without any signs of old age thanks to switching to ever more powerful bodies.
  • Redemption Equals Death: In an incredibly twisted way. He in no way attempts to take back the many atrocities he willingly facilitated during his 500 years alive but sacrifices himself to undo the one mistake that's been personally hounding him all this time: the part he played in the death of Kallen.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: During the 2nd Eruption comic, a flashback shows Siegfried made a deal with Otto to allow him to meet Cecilia again. Otto agreed, and put him into a series of battles against some Valkyries as a requirement. It took 2 years, but Siegfried showed some good progress, and in the end Otto fulfilled his deal. When Theresa thanked Otto for being so kind, he noted that she should know better than to think he's doing this purely out of goodwill—he had a thought of combining the Kaslana and Schariac bloodlines in order to create an even more powerful warrior.
  • Shadow Archetype: He is essentially a cautionary tale of what Kiana and her friends could have become had they never overcome their guilt, admitted their mistakes, let go of the past, and move on.
  • Shoot the Dangerous Minion: He won't hesitate to kill anyone who he thinks might have potential to go beyond his control, as Siegfried and Fu Hua can attest to.
  • The Svengali: He's been manipulating Durandal from a young age by making her reliant on his help regarding the bubble universe that's sealed withing her, as it's noted that he's completely aware how much that world and its people matter to her and he has been using the fact that he's seemingly the only authority with the means to treat it to his advantage to keep her in line. He even brings it up to her in a flashback when he's trying to motivate her into going along with turning Kiana into a test subject by implying that by awakening and studying the Herrscher of the Void's core they might also find a way to stabilize the bubble universe in her. The moment that weight is finally taken off her shoulders by influences that were outside Otto's control she becomes noticeably less blindly obedient towards him and straight up admits to Kiana that she feels she has more freedom to act on her own now.
  • Tragic Mistake: He gets Kallen killed by his very plan to save her (or rather, his sister’s plan which he turned to out of desperation). He, of course, didn't take it well.
  • Turn the Other Cheek: In Kallen's backstory comic, he tried persuading Kallen against exacting vigilante justicenote , while quoting part of The Bible about this trope. He still ended up helping her with her "justice rogue" work, though.
  • Uncertain Doom: In Post-Honkai Odyssey (taking place 8 years from the present), characters confirm he's dead years ago, with Mei briefly tells the APHO Protagonist that she and her friends saw him "leave with their own eyes". However, when they're talking through a long-distance comm device, their signal is interrupted by a voice that is recognized as Otto, talking to something that emits strange noises. The protagonist theorizes that it may be a recording from the past, but why it appears now and there of all places is a mystery. Later on, after our team escorts Welt and his adopted son Joyce onto the maglev train to bring them out of the city, a person who looks like Otto (but with longer hair and Supernatural Gold Eyes) approaches them on the train and talks about "stopping the Honkai for good", but it's unclear whether he's really Otto or not. Welt's special conversation (unlocked after you've done enough task missions) reveals that this blonde guy is not really Otto, but his Divine Key, Void Archives, taking on one of Otto's spare bodies. It's revealed in "Thus Spoke Apocalypse" Otto actually sacrificed his own life to create an alternate timeline where Kallen never died.
  • The Unfettered: Kallen's death is what made him into the person he is now, but it’s Otto’s own exceptional ability to cut himself off other people and disregard them which allows him to remain the way he is. In the 2nd Eruption comic, when the Will of Honkai manifests itself to him, it tests Otto by mentally replaying the very few things Otto regretted, such as killing the admittedly corrupted Eleanor to defend Kallen or having to test the incomplete vaccines for the Black Death plague on countless patients. Otto’s response is to yell out how he refuses to let all of that stop him is what caused the Will of Honkai to smile at him, as he demonstrates once and for all how he is capable of cutting off his humanity for the sake of his goals, and only then it grants Otto what he seeks. As a further testament to this, Otto admits to the "Captain" (in the end of a special story) he will stop at nothing to try to bring Kallen back to life. Even his own life is nothing more than just the final step to save Kallen.
  • We Have Reserves: He has an extremely callous disregard for anyone's life who isn't Kallen. He released a horde of Honkai Beasts to slaughter a town as a distraction in an attempt to save Kallen, proceeded to spend the next few centuries allowing his scientists perform fatal human experiments on kidnapped children (while he himself experiments on human cloning), and treats all Valkyries not named Theresa and Durandal as extremely disposable.
  • Why Am I Ticking?: His 3 Set Bonus of his Stigma has this effect. Every 5 seconds, the next Charged Attack creates a "brand" on the target that explodes half a second later, dealing lightning damage to nearby enemies.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He lets Schicksal kidnap children to perform painful and often lethal experiments on them to boost the war effort against the Honkai. This has directly led to the creation at least two Herrschers which may be what Otto wants. He also plans to sacrifice his beloved granddaughter, Theresa, for Kallen's revival if it ever becomes necessary.
  • Zero-Approval Gambit: He was already on thin ice with a lot of people for his various atrocities, but he lies outright about his true Evil Plan, claiming he intends to sacrifice the entire world to the Imaginary Tree to rewind time and save Kallen. This is done in order to get Kiana and Durandal to strike him down and set in motion his actual plan to sacrifice himself to create an alternate timeline where Kallen lived.

Valkyries

Pre-2nd Honkai War roster

    Cecilia Schariac

Voiced by: Fumengruowei * (Chinese), Yuu Kobayashi (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cecilia_schariac_m.png

Kiana's mother, Siegfried's wife and Theresa's close friend. She was an S-rank Valkyie and "the chosen one" of the Schariac family. Some time after mothering Kiana, she perished during the second Honkai War when Schicksal bombarded the area where she was facing the 2nd Herrscher, Sirin, killing them both. She appears in Chapters 5 and 6 in the "simulation" of the 2nd Honkai War.

  • The Ace: She was an S-rank Valkyrie and one of the most powerful Valkyries Schicksal ever had (after Kallen Kaslana and Reanna Brigantia). During the Second Honkai outbreak, she effortlessly killed one of Sirin's Seraphim Princes by chucking her lance from high altitude, piercing a gaping hole in her opponent and cushioning her fall with a tree created by Black Orchid's Virescent Growth ability.
  • Action Mom: it was mentioned that she was still tending to the toddler Kiana when she was called to take part in the 2nd Honkai War.
  • All-Loving Hero: Though Cecilia took her duty as a Valkyrie seriously, 2nd Eruption comic shows the depths of her compassion and how great an influence she would be on the main cast. Even in the midst of war, she feels sympathy for Sirin and admits at the very end that she truly did want to give Sirin a happy life. She chooses to spend her final moments comforting her enemy, an act of love that would cause Sirin's lingering humanity to be reborn as the protagonist, Kiana.
  • Battle Couple: She and her husband are both powerful fighters who wield their own Divine Keys.
  • Call-Forward: In the 2nd Eruption comic, in the part about Siegfried's past, Cecilia came across a white dress in a store. That dress looks like the one she would wear later on after becoming a mother (and depicted in Cecilia B stigma).
  • Came from the Sky: She first met Siegfried... by being flung to the sky by Welt and falling near the young Kaslana. He then brought her to safety in his home.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: She was an S-rank Valkyrie and a beautiful, loving mother for the baby Kiana. Too bad for her, Siegfried and Theresa, Cecilia ended up dead in the 2nd Honkai Eruption and Siegfried had to raise their child (or a clone of her, at least) alone. Kiana also laments having never known her mother before.
  • Diving Save: When young Siegfried brought her into an arcade, he came across a certain game where he put his hand into the HOMU's mouth, and then the HOMU will ask a question. Siegfried answered wrong, and the HOMU went to bite his hand off... were it not for Cecilia (who had no idea about this game before) jumping in time to save him. The janitor at the arcade pointed out that the teeth are made of soft materials.
  • Dual Wielding: Her Divine Key, Black Orchid - White Lily, is a pair of polearms; one's a lance and the other's a javelin. It gives her the power over "life and death". It is currently in the hands of Durandal after her death.
  • Dub Name Change: Her name is "Cecilia Shaniate" in the original Chinese/Japanese.
  • Fish out of Water: She was (implied to be) raised as a Valkyrie from a young age. She's well-trained and has great potential, but as a result, she didn't know much of life outside Schicksal bases and the affiliated people. Siegfried, after he found her unconscious and then brought her to his home, figured this out from her words, and decided to make her experience the outside world; she's amazed at many things most people would take for granted, and she would later thank him for all his treats.
  • Follow in My Footsteps: Inverted. Despite her boss' expectations, Cecilia and Siegfried's daughter is born without any special powers and Cecilia doesn't especially want her daughter to become a Valkyrie like her in the future. She is however glad that this way the career path won't atleast be forced on her child and if she does end up following after her mother, it'll be by her own choice.
  • Happily Married: Cecilia is very understanding of her husband Siegfried. When Siegfried is preparing to go to the Moon with Welt aboard the Arhat, he calls Cecilia to check up on her and Kiana, and was about to confess his worries about the mission's success odds, but could not bring himself to say it and hangs up. Cecilia calls him back instead, reassuring him that despite the difficult choice and potential sacrifices, she knows he made the right decision because of his just personality, and will happily share the burden if it comes to that.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In the 2nd Honkai War, she held the 2nd Herrscher in a fight for long enough for Schicksal to bombard the tower the two were in, killing the Herrscher at the cost of her life. The truth, however, is that Cecilia spent most of her blood fueling her bloodline's special ability to suppress Honkai energy, thwarting Sirin's Superpower Meltdown and reducing the radiation casualties to less than 3000 people. With her blood nearly depleted after using said ability and sheltering Siegfried underground with her vines, the only thing Cecilia could do before Otto's missiles hit her was comfort the dying Sirin as a mother would.
  • Important Haircut: In one of the supplementary comics, when she was younger (around her teen years), after the incident where she's separated from her fellow Valkyries and found by the young Siegfried, she cut her hair short to make herself less noticeable (for her safety). Siegried, while initially shocked, quickly came to love how she looked. Despite that (and changing to more civilian clothes), however, Welt and Einstein still found her.
  • Instant Expert: Having lived a sheltered life as a Valkyrie, Cecilia knew nothing of video games until she met Siegfried. However, her absurdly sharp reflexes let her easily trump over Siegfried at any game despite being a total newbie.
  • The Lost Lenore: Her death caused Siegfried and Theresa to start distrusting Schicksal, and in particular, he always thinks of her whenever Kiana's birthday came. Theresa sometimes mentions Cecilia's name in gameplay, including if she dies, where the former apologizes to the latter. She also beat herself over not being able to care for Kiana as part of her promise to her friend, until Kiana showed up again in front of her eyes (after the incident in 2014).
  • Memento Macguffin: She tried to invoke this: when she thought she's going to go back to her base and never see Siegfried again, she at least wanted to present to him a parting gift - a figure of "Arahato" that she saw in the arcades earlier. This, however, caused her to choose to abruptly run back to the arcades while he's waiting in the cinema (they're about to watch an Arahato movie), setting up the opportunity for Welt and Einstein to try to capture her for their plans.
  • Mystical White Hair: She has white hair and possesses her own mystical power, as well as wielding a Divine Key.
  • Set Bonus: Her Stigmata set is unique in that its individual stigma won't take effect unless at least 2 of them are put together. Aside from activating the 2-set bonus, equipping 2 will also activate the corresponding stigmata parts' effects.
    • 2 pieces: When the stars shine black, basic attacks have a 20% chance of dealing 1000% attack of physical DMG to non-boss enemies, with 5 seconds cooldown. When they shine white, branch attacks gain 30% crit rate.
    • 3 pieces: Whenever the stars change color, gain a 12% total damage multiplier. This can stack 3 times. The stacks are cleared if the user is switched out.
  • Not Too Dead to Save the Day: In Chapter 28 Cecilia speaks directly to her daughter from beyond the grave, allowing her daughter to overcome a Heroic RRoD that's about to ensue from unlocking the full power of her stigmata.
  • Stance System: Her Stigmata plays this way: Every few seconds, the 2 stars circling the user's head will glow either black or white. Each part of the stigmata, as well as its 2-set bonus, has different effects that activate when stars are glowing either black or white. E.g Cecilia T increases the power of normal attacks when the stars shine black, or the power of branch attacks when they shine white.
  • Together in Death: She spent her final moments cradling the dying Sirin, lamenting that the dream world Sirin created was the only place where Cecilia could act as a mother for the young girl to make up for all the pain and loneliness the Herrscher experienced. Nevertheless, Cecilia's happy that at the end of it all, she's sharing a final moment of warmth with Sirin, telling her "Ich liebe dich".
  • You Have No Idea Who You're Dealing With: Back during his teen years, Siegfried told Cecilia that he's going to escort her to her base so that her boss can pay him for his services. Cecilia could only mentally say that he's got no idea who - and what kind of person - her boss is.
  • You Remind Me of X: In ch. 6, which takes place in the "simulation" of the 2nd Honkai War, Cecilia says that it's such a coincidence that the playable Kiana shares the same name and appearance as her child. They would later bond like a real mother-and-daughter would, including Cecilia embracing Kiana and saying "Ich liebe dich". This is also referenced in the Dorm if you put Cecilia's chibi (from the "Reburn" stigmata set) with Kiana's. The twist is that the playable Kiana is the clone of the real Kiana, called K-423, which housed the Herrscher Core of the Void and with it, Sirin's soul - who always wished for Cecilia's warm embrace again.

    Cheng Lixue
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cheng_lixue.png
The acting commander of all Valkyries during the Second Honkai War, Lixue is an A-rank Valkyrie and the second strongest after Cecilia. She has a personal history with Fu Hua, being raised by the latter and having learned everything about martial arts from her.

  • All Chinese People Know Kung-Fu: With a Chinese name and being trained by Fu Hua, who's a superhuman martial arts master, Lixue manages to deliver a serious blow to Agata by throwing and kicking her after catching her offguard.
  • Cool Sword: Lixue wields the Water's Edge, one of the 10th Divine Key's forms, which is capable of producing powerful torrents of water. Unfortunately, its water tornado gets instantly evaporated by Agata's pseudo-Herrscher flames, and the blade itself shatters when tanking said flames. That said, Lixue is not harmless without her sword, delivering a roundhouse kick to her opponent when the latter least expects it.
  • Eating Lunch Alone: One of the unlockable scenes in ch. 21 focuses on her. It was her birthday, and she's making 2 bowls of wonton noodles, intended to be for her and her master, Fu Hua. But the latter has left her for some time and Lixue only made the 2nd bowl out of habit.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She dies trying to hold off Sirin long enough for Otto to retreat with an unconcsious Fu Hua in tow.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Twice over the course of the Second Eruption comic.
    • The first time, Agata fires a small plasma beam through Lixue's abdomen after overpowering the riptide created by the Water's Edge. Lixue struggles to even stay conscious due to the intense pain, but manages to lure Agata in and deliver a roundhouse kick to her.
    • The second time, she dies while stalling Sirin by being run through by one of Sirin's spikes, with the latter noting that it took her longer than expected to defeat the Valkyrie.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": Despite being the second strongest Valkyrie after Cecilia during the 2nd Honkai War, Cheng still looks up to Fu Hua, who raised her when she was orphaned at the age of 5.
  • She Is All Grown Up: When Fu Hua meets Lixue in Schicksal's Valkyrie residence before Otto's war speech, the former is quick to note how Lixue keeps growing with each passing year.

    Patricia Highsmith
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2022_10_22_at_105226_am_8.png
An A-rank Valkyrie working in the intel department, formerly affiliated with Squad Snowwolf. She's also a long-time friend of Theresa. Unbeknownst to Schicksal, Patricia is actually Anti-Entropy's top spy.

  • An Arm and a Leg: She loses her right arm during her confrontation with Sirin. While Schicksal believes her to be dead, she managed to escape from the fight, albeit heavily wounded and convinced that Sirin is now uncontrollable. Her handicap is ultimately what does her in, as she gets overwhelmed by the hordes of Honkai Beasts that appear once Sirin comes back from the Moon.
  • Dead Hat Shot: Her fight with Sirin quickly cuts to the news that she's missing, leaving behind her blood, her broken guns, and her Squad Snow Wolf emblem. Subverted in that she actually just escaped out of the building.
  • Double Agent: While she earnestly works as one of Schicksal's top Valkyries, she also leaks out information to Anti-Entropy. Her dying thoughts are about how her squad would probably get mad at her for earning a double paycheck.
  • Gatling Good: She wields 2 Honkai-powered chainguns to fight Sirin. She was beaten before she can use it, though. Some years prior, she tried using it against Welt, but the latter stopped the bullets in midair with his powers.

    Salome Jokanaan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2022_10_22_at_111337_am_3.png
An A-rank Valkyrie hailing from Schicksal's Europe branch and operating under Squad Snowwolf. Salome is calm and collected, in contrast to Shub's more brash temperament.

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Her introduction describes her as being known for her "lightning reflexes, wizard aim, and insane dancing skills".
  • Badass Cape: She wears a big blue cape.
  • Dies Wide Open: After tanking Benares' attack and sacrificing herself for the fleeing transports, Salome falls to the ground lifeless, eyes still open.
  • Flying Weapon: Her main weapon, "Halo of Twelve", is a set of flying blades that take formation of a big ring/hoop.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: When Benares launches an attack on the retreating Babylon convoy, Salome decides that only way the transports will come out unscathed is by blocking said attack. She succeeds, but gets hit by the attack in the process, killing her instantly.
  • Red Baron: "The Baptist".
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The coolheaded blue to Shub's easy-going and lackadaisical red. They even wear matching colours. Salome is constantly focused on her mission, and is annoyed that Shub tries to distract her with anything ranging from a Body-Count Competition to snacks.

    Shub-Niggurath
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2022_10_22_at_11538_pm_26.png
Another A-rank Valkyrie and member of Squad Snowwolf, hailing from Schicksal's South America branch. Shub is brash and impulsive, in contrast to Salome's subdued personality.

  • A Good Way to Die: Shub manages to land a critical hit on Benares with her spear, but the attack's backlash proves too much for the Valkyrie to handle. Despite Kira's pleas to back away, Shub keeps plunging the spear into the wyrm's weak spot after feeling Salome's presence in her attack, knowing full well that she'll die. Benares' core is shattered, and both the Honkai and Shub are mortally wounded, with the latter happy that she'll be reunited with Salome at last.
  • Fiery Redhead: She has pinkish-red hair and she's a Hot-Blooded Valkyrie who really enjoys battles.
  • Red Baron: "Daughter of Chaos". Salome also calls her "Black Goat" (Shub-Niggurath's nickname in Cthulhu Mythos).
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The hotheaded red to Salome's cool and collected blue. They even wear matching colours. Shub's easy-going attitude clashes with Salome's insistence to focus on the mission, rarely paying attention to it and instead goofing around.
  • Reports of My Death Were Greatly Exaggerated: Shub-Niggurath's introductory profile states that her name (or rather handle) often graced the KIA list, only to show up alive afterwards and thus spreading rumours that she's unkillable. With the ending of Alien Space showing a Sugar-controlled human body that's near identical to Shub-Niggurath, as well as the revelation that Shigure Kira and Shub-Niggurath were in contact with the Sugars during the Second Honkai War, it's likely that Shub-Niggurath survived this long thanks to her Sugar companion, Sugar Molass.
  • Meaningful Name: Shub-Niggurath shares her name with the Outer Goddess of fertility from Cthulhu Mythos. This may be a reference to her close relationship with the Sugars, space aliens whose true forms are tentacle monsters.
  • Scary Teeth: She's got sharp teeth like a shark's.

    Shigure Kira

Voiced by: Song Yuanyuan * (Chinese), Ibuki Kido (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shigurekira.png
Sugary Starburst
An A-rank Valkyrie and the final member of Squad Snowwolf during the 2nd Honkai War. Kira somehow became a Valkyrie by joining Schicksal under the belief that she was instead participating in a talent training show. She is Cecilia's self-proclaimed number one fan.
She makes appearances in Durandal's visual novel, and chapter 25-EX of the game, before becoming a main character in Chapter 37.

  • Achievements in Ignorance: Kira actually passed Schicksal's Valkyrie recruitment process with flying colours while believing that it was a talent training show (running into Salome, who was a dance virtuoso, didn't help matters) that could help her get closer to Cecilia, whom she worshiped. She didn't realize this until the "show" was over and she was congratulated as a Schicksal Valkyrie, with Salome jokingly snarking that the actual training show was over before Kira arrived.
  • Ascended Extra: Originally a minor character appearing as a stigmata and suplemantary materials, she becomes a main character and mentor for Chapter 37.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Kira took the Valkyrie exam by complete accident, and basically survived the Second Eruption through sheer luck. When encountered in the bubble universe, she comes across as rather silly and more concerned with idols than with her duties as a Valkyrie. In spite of this initial impression, Kira is an experienced veteran and has become a front-line agent for the Sugars, traveling the Sea of Quanta and dealing with inter-dimensional threats.
  • Dreadful Musician: Kira dreams of becoming an idol, but admits that her singing voice is....lacking. The developers even joke in a behind-the-scenes video about making a weapon based on her terrible singing. She's actually fine on instruments like the guitar, the issue is that she's tone deaf, which she's very sensitive about.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: When Kira meets this new generation of Valkyries, she fully expects them to recognize her from her past exploits with Snowwolf. Unfortunately, it seems she's basically been forgotten or overshadowed by the far more prominent veterans of the 2nd Eruption.
  • Fangirl: As Cecilia's self-proclaimed greatest fan, Kira longs to be the same stage as her idol. Because of that adoration, she also became the primary suspect of spreading negative rumours about Siegfried when he took Cecilia away from Schicksal, such as saying how he "smacked every Valkyrie on the [CENSORED]".
  • Fire, Ice, Lightning: Her Stigmata set (*4 rarity) is the "generic elemental damage enhancer" set, with them being able to increase elemental and total damage, as well as providing extra defense. Many elemental Valkyries benefit from this set whenever you're lacking any more specific elemental Stigmata set.
  • Friendly Sniper: Kira is an outgoing girl with dreams of becoming an Idol Singer, always presenting herself as cheerful and cute. Her matching pistols can be combined into a sniper rifle, giving her a special ability to aim and snipe at her enemies.
  • Guns Akimbo: In contrast to her earlier appearances, the playable version of Kira wields a pair of handguns similar to the members of the Kaslana clan.
  • Gun Fu: Kira's fighting style involves dual-wielding her combinable pistols, while engaging in agile acrobatic moves to stay ahead of her enemies.
  • Hate at First Sight: Kira takes an immediate dislike to Hare, suspicious of this stranger that has taken on Cecilia's appearance. The two continue to be at odds throughout the chapter, complicating efforts to negotiate with the Sage. This animosity continues into "Perfect Performance", although it's tempered somewhat when Hare tries to help Kira with her singing issues.
  • Musical Assassin: In line with her Idol Singer theme, Kira's lightning-based attacks all seem to be named after musical nomenclature, and her tethers resemble musical notes. "Kira's Entrapping G-Clef" and "Kira's Electrifying Symphony", anyone?
  • Mythology Gag: Her outfit in the Second Eruption comic is nigh-identical to the one she sports in Guns GirlZ, minus the belts.
  • Saved by Canon: Kira makes a cameo at the conclusion of the Alien Space comic, taking place more than a decade after the events of the main game. As such, she seems to be destined to survive and eventually escape the Sea of Quanta.
  • Shock and Awe: In the Second Eruption comic, Kira's abilities revolve around immobilizing her enemies with an electron net, making them vulnerable to allied attack. It's powerful enough to negate even Benares' lightning, forcing the Honkai beast to revert to her full-powered dragon form.
  • Slide Attack: Her evasion moves include a dramatic slide across the ground on her knees, slipping beneath charging enemies and into position to attack again.
  • Survivor Guilt: As "Perfect Performance" shows, her being the last living member of Squad Snowwolf weighs heavily on her mind more than 17 years later, and the root of her insecurities lies not only in her singing voice but also in her inability to save everyone.
  • Touched by Vorlons: Since falling into the Sea of Quanta, Kira has become fully accepted by the Sugars and counted as one of their number. Besides having a "key" needed to access their bubble universe, she's gained other abilities as a result of her time with the alien beings. Among these is the ability to translate the language of a dead universe, letting her investigate the unnatural destruction of several bubble universes.
  • Uncertain Doom: Kira is last seen in the Second Eruption comic passing out while trying to force herself into finishing off Benares, who was mortally wounded by Shub-Niggurath (who also died from her own attack's backlash), but still able to move around. Durandal does, however, meet Kira, barely recognizable as an Idol Singer, in the Sea of Quanta during the events of her eponymous visual novel, where it is confirmed that Kira survived her wounds, but got sucked into the Sea of Quanta due to the residual power of Sugar Molass, Shub's alien friend. She then proceeds to help Durandal get out of the bubble world, and her fate afterwards is left hanging up until Seele and Susannah meet her in Chapter 37. She also shows up at the end of the Alien Space comic, where she appears alongside Sugar Molass who morphed into having Shub-Niggurath's form to send Welt and the Void Archives back to Earth.
  • You Don't Look Like You: Her stigmata portrait looks significantly younger than her appearance in the Second Eruption comic, where she looks barely younger than the 24-year-old Cecilia. It's implied that the ones used as her Stigmata's portrait are based on her early days as a Valkyrie.

Post-2nd Honkai War roster

    Rita Rossweisse

Voiced by: Xiao N note  (Chinese), Aoi Yūki (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/umbral_rose.png
Umbral Rose
Stalker: Phantom Iron
Argent Knight: Artemis
Spina Astera
One of the three S-ranked Valkyries currently active in Schicksal, Rita is the deputy captain of the Immortal Blades Valkyrie Squad, as well as the adjutant to fellow S-class Valkyrie Durandal. She's professional, courteous and elegant, but her impersonality makes people unable to find out anything more about her.

She first appears in Chapter 8, meeting Fu Hua, before becoming a playable character and a boss in ch. 9.
  • Affably Evil: Rita's completely loyal to Otto, works to prevent Theresa and the others from finding Kiana in the wake of the events of ch. 9, and has no qualms about killing. At the same time, she is always polite and courteous, since she's as much a maid as she is a Valkyrie. This is especially the case in the non-Story parts of the game, where she interacts with the Captain and the other Valkyries a lot more and the maid aspect of her character is heavily emphasized.

That said, her affable nature isn't airtight. The two characters who can actually under get her skin and break her politeness are Tesla and Raven:
    • In "Odd Drifter", her interactions with the Captain are as open and friendly as they always are, but whenever she talks to Tesla, there's a tinge of passive-agressive sarcasm. In the Chinese New Year event, Tesla invades her part of the kitchen and demands she change a recipe; this leads to Rita saying that she mistook Tesla for "a juvenile and unreasonable female who's a joke to everyone" which really gets under Tesla's skin. During "Gemina Invasions", Rita's interactions with Tesla are loaded with sinister menace, although this is a different universe's Rita.
    • Rita hates Raven because of the events of chs. 13 and 14, which caused the deaths of several Immortal Blades Valkyries and almost incapacitated Rita. When Rita and Durandal meet up with Mei and Raven in ch. 18, most of the conversation between Rita and Raven is them taking passive-aggressive swipes at each other. Rita backs off when Durandal steps in, but she later refuses to shake Raven's hand and outright calls her a murderer.
  • An Ice Person: Outside of her heavily ice-based battlesuit Argent Knight, she also has a five-star event-only stigma called "Rita: Songkran" − whenever a character uses a special weapon skill, a bubble is created that bursts after a few seconds, freezing nearby enemies (making it one of the few stigmatas that functions more like an additional weapon than a buff). More generally, the ice theme fits her always calm demeanour.
  • Anti-Villain: As the Story mode has progressed and more stages featuring Rita have been released, her characterization has evolved from being Otto's ruthless, Dragon-like weapon to an intelligent, quick-thinking and clever fighter who may be committed to Schicksal but hates harm being done to innocents; is willing to listen to, learn from, and fight alongside Kiana and is genuinely puzzled by Kiana's very un-Herrscher-like behavior; and has no apparent malice in her actions so far, manipulative though they may be at times. She's definitely an antagonist, but as of ch. 18 she's no worse than Affably Evil.
  • Ascended Meme: Argent Knight is often called a Stand User (with her "Crescent Harvest" as her stand). In the Chronicles story "Dreams of Gemina" she auditions for a role as a villain, where she does a "Jojo Pose" along with manifesting Crescent Harvest.
  • Assist Character:
    • Phantom Iron's ultimate skill is to summon a robotic 4-legged creature called "Stalker Carbon" that attacks her enemies until her SP runs out.
    • Argent Knight has a scythe-wielding robot companion called "Crescent Harvest" that frequently appears and reappears to attack her enemies.
  • Auto-Revive: At SS-rank, Umbral Rose gains a once-per-battle skill that lets her revive herself back to a fraction of her full health.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Under most circumstances, Rita is a kind, gentle maid. That is, unless her master has ordered your death, or you get in the way of her mission, in which case she will cut you down without mercy or second thoughts.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In the later part of ch. 14, Kiana and Mei are running out of the Heliopolis building when they meet Rita. After assuring Mei that they're on the same side and telling them the World Serpent's secret plan, a huge quantum creature suddenly shows up, blocking their way. Rita, wanting to repay the favor to Kiana for saving her in ch. 13, decides to fight the creature in their stead so that Kiana and Mei can go ahead and stop the bad guys' plan.
  • Boisterous Weakling: Played for Laughs in the "Cybernet Haven" event, where she's one of the renowned "haxxors" alongside Durandal, much like in the main story. Unlike the main story, she's got a surprisingly foul mouth and actually has no fighting ability whatsoever; she can only try to "intimidate" the people who aren't scared by her title before getting defeated by a slap.
[trying to apphrehend Raven] Give yourself up, lie on the floor, hands behind your head, and spread those legs.
DAMMIT, YOU *cough* NAUGHTY BASTARDS! I'LL SMACK YOU! I SWEAR I WILL! You see that? I'LL CUSS YOU ALL TO HELL EVEN IF THAT COSTS ME CREDITS!
Kyaa...kyaaaa...did you just...hit me? And you cussed without getting a fine! I...I am so triggered...Durandal will avenge me. Oh, my heart... *faints slowly*
  • Brought Down to Normal: In ch. 13, she gets affected by the anti-Honkai gas bomb that was sent by Raven, weakening her; she only escapes with Kiana's help. In ch. 14, she's still under the effects, so she can't fight effectively; she points out, however, that she still has her skills and battle experience, which she uses to infiltrate the Heliopolis building to Find the Cure!.
  • Camera Fiend: One event stigma depicts her holding a camera. In two Cooking with Valkyries season 2 episodes, she's invited to St. Freya's "welcoming party" and takes the duty of taking multiple pictures of the girls, including one where Kiana gets tricked into cooking Fu Hua's recipe (and she fumbles that, too). She also does it at the ending credits of those episodes, taking pictures of Kiana's antics. Some of the pictures she took gets displayed later on in frames.
  • Catchphrase: "Ara ara." It pops up occasionally in her dialogue in events, usually when she's had something confirmed for her or is making a realization. The English translation lampshades this with the "Rita's Mooncake" itemnote , which is described as "Sweet, aromatic, and refreshing with intense *ara ara*-ness."
Ara ara. Theresa-sama has indeed thought everything through.
Ara ara. What did I tell you? Captain-sama always comes through.
  • Consummate Professional: As both a maid and a Valkyrie, Rita does everything with immaculate skill and grace. In one of the lighter moments of ch. 9, it's revealed that this even extends to tying people up: making the knot around Tesla's arms so perfectly Himeko felt like it would be a shame to untie it, as well as perfuming the handkerchief around Tesla's mouth so it would smell nice for her. In her "Valkyries' Dining Escapades" chapter, Mei mentally questions about why Rita has an obsession to be "perfect". Rita sums it up nicely in the end:
"The most important thing in cooking is to properly convey your heartfelt feelings to the recipient" — I agree with your sentiments, Miss Mei, but to me... "perfection" is how I convey my feelings.
  • Cool Mask: Rita's Phantom Iron battlesuit has a rebreather-like mask that she only wears during her Super Mode and in a few cutscenes in Chapter 9-EX. Her chibi form permanently wears it though.
  • Cultured Badass: Refined, elegant and has a talent for tea-making and cooking the finest cuisines. She can also tear Honkai to shreds with her scythe.
  • Dash Attack:
    • Phantom Iron's Charged Attack is to dash through the closest enemy while spinning her scythe. This then activates a Super Mode where she moves faster and her attacks become laced with lightning, but her special gauge will fill up (performing Ultimate Evasion and killing enemies will halt the fill-up progress). If it gets full, she'll enter an overheat-like state where she becomes slower until it cools down.
    • As Argent Knight, her Charged Attack during her Super Mode is changed into one resembling Phantom Iron's. If any enemy gets hit by it, Crescent Harvest will additionally attack them with a spinning scythe. This is also used in her boss fight, with it additionally shooting out ice projectiles in an outward spiral pattern.
  • Defiant to the End: At the end of the 2nd part of ch. 13, Rita has been weakened by the anti-Honkai gas bomb that is deployed by her enemy, Raven of the World Serpent, and the latter also informs her that her Immortal Blades squad has also fallen victim to the gas. She then notices Rita smirking, saying that the latter has a "heart of stone" for her reaction to her fallen comrades. Her response is to say that she's thinking of how they (Schicksal) should "return the favor" when Raven "fall into their hands". It then ends in a Bolivian Army Cliffhanger where she commands her zombie minions that surrounded Rita to attack her. Luckily for her, Kiana comes to her rescue.
  • Distress Call: In ch. 14, she tries sending a message to her boss, Durandal, about her whereabouts, but she doesn't expect it to reach HQ as her subordinate told her that their connections are jammed. It's implied later that Durandal eventually receives the call, and ch. 14's ending shows her catching the unconscious Kiana. In the mini-event that's released before ch. 15's release, we can see Rita's message for Durandal:
Durandal-sama, the Immortal Blades were ambushed in Arc City and the World Serpent is behind Heliopolis. I will first investigate Heliopolis due to the threat it poses to Schicksal. I have received no response from HQ yet so please ask for reinforcements for me if you receive this message. I appreciate your assistance.
We also have located Herrscher of the Void. She possesses human consciousness and her condition is stable.
  • The Dragon: In her first appearances in the story, she's set up as a ruthless and brutally efficient enforcer for Otto Apocalypse’s will. However, as more story chapters have been released, this aspect of her has been greatly reduced as she spends a lot more time interacting with the Valkyries of St. Freya and with Durandal in both combat and non-combat situations.
  • Dragon Lady: In the "Sanka Saga" event, she becomes this, even though (as the story notes) she's not native to the Japanese-like setting. She's the top dog in the "Evernight", called "Hanafuda Oyabun", and everybody there both respects and fears her. When she's first shown in the story, she gives the aura of an alluring, yet ominous, East Asian lady.
  • Enemy Mine: She's forced to reach out to Mei and Tesla for assistance in Chapter 14 as her combat abilities have been weakened by the World Serpent's anti-Honkai gas, and she needs their help to obtain the antidote and rescue Kiana. In a sly way she uses Kiana's current location as the bait for it (when she wanted to rescue Kiana herself), effetively killing two birds with one stone.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: As shifty as she appears to be, she's horrified and infuriated when she discovers Heliopolis' experiments on the citizens of Arc City.
  • Evil Brit: Her in-game stats only reveal her place of origin as Europe, but the Durandal visual novel reveals that she is from Manchester, UK.
  • Exact Words: In ch. 18, when Alvitr sends Durandal and Rita the coordinates to where the Herrscher in Coral Island is situated, Rita points out that it's the place where they lost contact with the Snow Lotus squad, and Durandal decides to go there. When Alvitr warns them that the Overseer had ordered them not to engage the Herrscher, Rita tells her that they're only going to look for the missing squad, and that's part of their stated mission.
Alvitr: Oh, that's right. We won't be disobeying any orders that way. You're so smart, Adjutant Rita!
  • Femme Fatale: She is equally seductive as she is deadly, especially around the Captain, but her shifty nature makes it difficult to tell exactly what her true feelings are, especially since the version of Rita that's been the most openly affectionate toward the Captain may not be the base reality's Rita.
  • Find the Cure!: In ch. 14, she infiltrates the Heliopolis building again, this time to find the antidote for the gas bomb that affected her in ch. 13. She finds it in the end.
  • First Friend: While they initially appear quite distant and formal towards each other, she’s actually the first person close to her age the young Bianka bonded with and later chapters make it clear Rita cares about her more than about anyone else.
  • The Gadfly:
    • Played with in the dorms, as some of her chibis' interactions with the other characters come off as gentle needling. For instance, she asks Theresa if she wants some milk, saying it'll make her grow taller, which Theresa angrily rejects. There's also this exchange with Himeko:
Himeko: Rita, care to share a glass with me?
Rita: Thank you, but I can't drink.
Himeko: Hmm? Booze is good stuff.
Rita: If I get drunk, no one will be able to take care of you.
Himeko: Take care of me? *frowning kaomoji* Are you saying I'll get drunk?
    • This is also what she may become in events, particularly if she's around Tesla, which almost always leads to Passive Aggressive Combat.
  • The Good Chancellor: She takes on this role in "Honkai Kingdoms" and the other events related to it, towards the "Grand Seeress of Emberya", Zhuge Kongming. She's loyal, competent, and all around reliable, so much that Kongming has no problem giving her the regental duty to look after Emberya when the Grand Seeress has to look after Huodou's seal.
  • Gunship Rescue: Near the end of ch. 13, she calls for her airship EOS to come rescue her, but, in a subversion, she hears gunshots over the comm links and calmly accepts that it's not going to save her. Instead, in a bold move, she commands the ship itself to come to her location and crash to the ground to destroy the Heliopolis building. If not for Kiana using her Herrscher powers to teleport Rita and herself to safety, they would've died as well.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: Her left eye is obscured by her hair; artwork tends to completely cover the eye while it can barely be seen in her in-game sprites and her chibi versions in the dorms. This both accents her already considerable beauty and marks her as an antagonist, as prior to the introduction of Azure Empyrea she was the only Valkyrie whose hair obscured her face, and in her early appearances she serves as Otto's agent and assassin in the Story mode. She's less obviously antagonistic in the side events, but most of her roles have a nefarious edge to them, and she eventually opposes the Captain, Tesla, and Seele during the second half of "Odd Drifter".
  • Horns of Villainy: Invoked by the curved, horn-like extensions on the headbands she wears as Umbral Rose and Dusky Murmurs.
  • Hot as Hell: Umbral Rose's alternate costume Dusky Murmurs has a succubus theme, as it's mostly black, is one of her most revealing outfits, has bat wings mounted on the skirt and a bat decoration on the headdress, and changes the rosy trails of her dodge move and scythe swings into bats. Its Flavor Text mentions travelers disappearing in the woods and a survivor hearing "a soft gentle murmur before a hellish encounter".
  • Human Popsicle: Argent Knight's Charged Attack can encase her opponents in ice—even the normally-unfreezable ones, like bosses—but only after her Crescent Harvest robot has inflicted enough status ailments on the enemy. As a boss, her attacks, as well as her Area of Effect blue circle, will make your "Hypothermia" gauge (appearing only on fights against her) fill up, and if it's full, your character will be frozen in ice and you have to switch in your other character.
  • Irony:
    • Her maid-like mentality makes her a humble and obedient person. In the "Winter Rhapsody" event, however, she's put in the role of the haughty Red Queen. Even if the Queen's role is revealed to be Good All Along, she still tries her best to act as high and mighty as a queen should be, albeit with slips here and there. The Captain points out that she really doesn't fit the role due to her mentality.
    • Other than Mei, Rita is the Valkyrie most openly concerned about the Captain, despite being on Otto’s side and thus technically the Captain's enemy. However, whether this is genuine or simply an act is up for speculation.
    • In her first appearance in "Sanka Saga", she has set up a trap in her hideout for the infiltrating Kasumi, a sort of anaesthetic smoke that weakens her body, leaving her at Rita's mercy. This is basically the reverse of Rita's situation in the middle of Chapter 13, where, after she infiltrates deep into the Heliopolis building, she gets weakened by the anti-Honkai gas bomb sent by Raven.
    • Argent Knight is known for being able to freeze even unfreeze-able enemies. Then in ch. 19, she, while wearing said suit, confronts the Herrscher of Ice and gets frozen for her troubles.
  • Lost in Translation: Minor example in the English translation of chapter 14. After Kiana gets captured by Raven, Rita arrives a moment too late to assist her. She says that Kiana has to wait, because "After-all, you had bossed me around. Just consider this payback time." While not necessarily a mistranslation, it does give it a much more negative connotation than the original Chinese, which was of a more playful tone (calling back to Kiana calling her a cold-hearted/evil maid in the previous chapter), with the "payback" being more about returning the favor rather than being vindictive.
  • Meaningful Appearance:
    • Umbral Rose's outfit, befitting its name, has a number of rose motifs and patterns on it.
    • Her Argent Knight battlesuit is eventually revealed to be part of the base for Durandal's Bright Knight: Excelsis battlesuit, which explains why the two battlesuits share a number of design features. She even wears the same sword-shaped earring as Durandal, although in the opposite ear. Her icy crown is also symbolic of her ice powers for this suit.
  • Meaningful Name: Genome Reaper, the signature scythe for the Phantom Iron battlesuit, does exactly that—it samples and analyses the DNA of its targets, both to adjust the performance of the battlesuit and to create toxins tailored to effect those targets.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: She refuses to disobey any of Otto's orders even when Fu Hua tells her how foolish that is.
  • Mysterious Past:
    • Rita's past prior to becoming a Valkyrie is a total mystery, and there's no telling if/when any details will ever be revealed. The Secret Info for her Umbral Rose version specifically mentions this:
Rita seldom talks about her past. In fact, she does not talk about herself. Many curious people tried to unearth more about her, but Rita kept her secrets hidden very well. No one managed to find out anything. Perhaps only Durandal and fellow Valkyries of the Immortal Blades would know anything about Rita.
    • A bit of her past is shown in the Durandal visual novel: she came from a normal family who were killed in a Honkai outbreak. Then a Valkyrie called Ragna took her under her wing. Ragna dressed as a maid in her spare time; she claimed that it lets people drop their guard around her, and this would later inspire Rita to do the same thing. Later, she would have Bianca as her junior; when Ragna was killed in battle, she left a message to Rita to take care of Bianca for her.
  • Mysterious Watcher: In ch. 2, she's sent to St. Freya to inspect the Selene/Moonlight Throne battleship that Schicksal's Far East Branch has neutralized in ch. 1, and later to observe the Valkyrie exams. She focuses her attention on Kiana, supposedly because the latter is a Kaslana. However, in the end, while watching Kiana from afar, she makes a cryptic comment about how "Subject 105-K423" has shown signs of growth and that the Overseer's project can now proceed to a more "practical phase".
  • Nerves of Steel: As shown in two moments in ch. 13, things such as her Valkyrie squad being in danger or her escape attempt being sabotaged don't faze her in the slightest—she would either just give a cold smile to her opponent, and/or think of another solution/way out on the spot. In a lighter note, her polite tone and impersonality makes it hard for most people to read her thoughts and intentions.
  • Ninja Maid: Because of her work as a maid and associated servile attitude and politeness, it's easy to forget that she's a S-rank Valkyrie on par with her leader, Durandal. Her Umbral Rose profile lampshades this, and the battlesuit itself reflects her image of a perfect maid: prim, proper and deadly with the scythe. During the events of ch. 9, she fights Fu Hua to a standstill and may have actually beaten her if Durandal hadn't ordered her to stand down. Chs. 13 and 14 take the concept almost literally, as some stages have you sneaking through various buildings, stealthily avoiding guards, and slipping up on said guards when their backs are turned and killing them.
  • Not Evil, Just Misunderstood: In "Empyrean Legends", Rita's introduction has her acting very suspiciously, especially as the Celestial's group is on alert of a supposed "ghost" who seduced the lumberjacks in the dark forest. Rita, being irritated, decides to get away, causing the Celestial and others to chase after her. Upon meeting her and Mei in a cave, however, they found the missing lumberjacks there, apparently having eaten a lot of Mei's and Rita's cooking. Mei doesn't have the heart to tell the lumberjacks to leave, so the Celestial announces to them that the Sakura Inn is making a lot of food (courtesy of the cabbages sent to the inn from the previous chapter).
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: During "Odd Drifter", Rita joins the Captain's party (who's looking for Seele's "sister") to look for her missing "servant". However, when they find Seele's "sister" (Bronya), they also find out that Bronya has Rita's "servant" (Crescent Harvest) in her custody. Rita can only sheepishly say that she's going back to the igloo she was in and waiting for another adventurer who doesn't know Bronya or isn't on her side, but the Captain says it's too late. Rita then turns against the rest of the group, wanting to take her Crescent Harvest back and to reuse the Humongous Mecha that Bronya is guarding. Your party defeats her and she's forced to flee.
  • Number Two: She's the deputy leader of the Immortal Blades Valkyrie squad, answering to Durandal and commanding the squad when Durandal isn't available.
  • Older Sidekick: She's 21, while her boss Durandal is still in her teens.
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: Umbral Rose wears brown pantyhose and a black maid's skirt, while Argent Knight wears white pantyhose and a blue and black skirt.
  • The Queenpin: In the "Sanka Saga" event, she's put into this role as "Hanafuda Oyabun". Prior to the start of the story, she came into the Evernight part of the Yae Machi town and, over the course of 6 months, managed to put herself on top of everyone else and toned the chaos down to a minimum. The Ferryman (Kasumi's assistant) hints that Rita used the Zakti Rune of Manusya to make it possible.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Another hint to Rita's adversarial role in the story is that her eyes are a pinkish red similar to the roses on her Umbral Rose battlesuit.
  • Sarashi: Played with in her Hanafuda Oyabun costume. Rather than wrapping her belly or attempting to bind her breasts, she uses sarashi-style wrapping as a substitute bra and as underwear, both of which are clearly visible (otherwise, the outfit would be quite indecent).
  • A Sinister Clue: She's the only playable character who wields her weapon with her left hand. She's also more villainous than others, even if she acts nice.
  • Sinister Scythe: She wields a scythe, and while she may act polite and courteous, she is a loyal agent for Otto.
  • Sniper Rifle: In the "Empyrean Legends" event, she picks up one when she finds it dropped in the cave in the third chapter. When she meets Book of Fuxi and the Celestial again, she intends to give it back, but the Celestial tells her to keep it to defend herself. The special rifle has the slowest firing rate of all guns, but each shot fires a quick and powerful laser that pierces through everything, even obstacles. Her Ultimate Skill gives her Bottomless Magazines and increased rate of fire for a short duration.
  • Something about a Rose: Her last name means "Rose White" (and is a reference to Nibelungenlied), her outfits have rose patterns, and especially as Umbral Rose, she leaves behind rose petals in her evasion move and some of her attacks.
  • Speed Blitz: Umbral Rose's Ultimate Skill has her Flash Stepping around while attacking the target (and its surroundings) from multiple sides, before doing a powerful spinning slash.
  • Spin Attack: Her scythe attacks generally involve a lot of acrobatic spinning and twirling.
  • Summon to Hand: She's capable of summoning her scythe to her hands. This comes in handy when one of Umbral Rose's attacks is to throw the scythe towards enemies—she can simply summon it back.
  • Super Mode:
    • Phantom Iron's Charged Attack lets her enter a mode where she gains increased speed and her attacks are laced with lightning, but it will fill a green gauge slowly; whenever she evades an attack or kills an enemy, she loses some of the "green units". When it's filled to full, she enters an overheat-like state where she moves slower.
    • Argent Knight's Burst Mode empowers her attacks, making her do more damage and freeze her enemies more often. It also comes with an ultimate attack that ends the mode, where Rita deals high ice damage and freezes enemies on a large radius. Activating it will also heal herself for some amount.
  • Supermodel Strut: Chapters 13 and 14 feature places where Rita strolls between areas seeking information, and her gait is made quite sensual with a pronounced hip sway, denoting her allure as a Femme Fatale. This also contrasts with Kiana's more plain gait in the same chapters.
  • Supreme Chef: Among the things she can do well is cooking. She also knows how to make a balanced (and pretty-looking!) meal, down to the calorie intakes and nutritional proportions. Mei even acknowledges her skill.
  • Teleportation: Rita's evasion action is similar to that of Herrscher of the Void's in that she disappears and reappears in a spread of rose petals (Umbral Rose) or sparks of lightning (Phantom Iron) or small snowflakes (Argent Knight). She can't pass through opponents, however.
  • Throwing Your Sword Always Works:
    • Umbral Rose's Charged Attack has her throwing her scythe forward. It costs a bit of HP and her entire special bar to use, but she'll then get a buff that lets her heal herself with her normal attacks.
    • Argent Knight's team skill has her throw her scythe towards the target that inflicts her special debuff on them, allowing her to quickly freeze them. It's also among one of the team skills with the lowest cooldowns in the game.
  • Tranquil Fury: In ch. 13, when she discovers that Heliopolis has been experimenting on the people of Arc City, she feels fury burning through her veins while keeping a straight face.
  • Undying Loyalty: To her commander Durandal, who leads the Immortal Blades and is Schicksal's top Valkyrie. In the visual novel it's revealed that Rita actually considers Durandal the future of the organization.
  • Villain Respect: She may be Otto's agent, and has a lot of blood on her hands by the time ch. 9 ends (along with sabotaging Theresa, Mei, and Bronya's attempt to find Kiana), but she always uses the -sama honorific for Theresa, addresses Mei as part of the influential Raiden family, admits to liking Fu Hua after their fight, and seems genuinely regretful that Fu Hua is dooming herself by choosing to oppose Otto. Later on, when she finally catches up to Kiana, she speaks to her as an equal and takes her warnings about the true nature of the Honkai attacks seriously. Outside the Story mode, she always addresses the Captain as "Kanchou-sama" ("Captain-sama" in the English text), even in situtations where their interactions are more personal and a less proper means of address might be okay.
  • Villain Shoes:
    • Half of Chapter 9-EX is from Rita's perspective, as she opposes our heroes' group and tries to get the intel of the missing Kiana's location before the latter's friends do.
    • In ch. 13, some of the stages are from her perspective, with her trying to hunt Kiana down in Arc City, and then investigating the Heliopolis building after Kiana gives her a clue to the place. This continues into ch. 14, where she's infiltrating the Heliopolis building again, this time to find the antidote for her condition and look for Kiana, who was abducted into the building's secret lab.
  • Villainous Crush: If you take her flirty dialogue pieces on the bridge, the flavor text for her Icy Sea Spray swimsuit, some of her scenes from "Honkai Kingdom", and the 'end' of "St. Freya's Fiesta" at face value, then it's pretty clear that Rita has some romantic interest in the Captain. The animated short that was released for her birthday on 3/1/2020 practically writes it in stone, as she actually gets flustered by a compliment from the Captain and seems to admit that she's starting to fall for the Captain before changing the subject. However, it's ultimately uncertain whether this is genuine or her manipulating the Captain for some alterior purpose. Adding another twist to this is that the Rita in the birthday event may be from a different universe, as she appears to be the Rita who was consciousness mapping into Irene Adler in "Fallen Rosemary".
Fufufu. Did I just hear Captain-sama in there? It's time for some lovely-cuddly!
  • Villainous Rescue: Genuinely wants to rescue Kiana from being captured by the World Serpent, but couldn't do it herself. So she goes the pragmatic route of contacting Mei to help rescuing her and getting the antidote for the gas affecting them both.
  • Weak to Fire: As Boss Argent Knight, she has a feature where, if you inflict the "ignite" status on her enough times, she'll lose her resistance to flinching and take more fire damage for a short while.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: In "Odd Drifter", she appears for the final time in Seele's sidequest, where she retakes the Crescent Harvest from Bronya (after the latter sent it out on an errand) and comes back for retribution... only to see the Captain's group again. She can only sheepishly say that she's going back to the pavilion in the volcano area as its maid, but the Captain says it's too late. Your group then fights her (as Argent Knight) and, when she loses, she flees again and vanishes from the event, as her involvement is never addressed after that.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: In ch. 18, as Durandal is going to confront the Herrscher of Ice, she leaves Rita to guard the line of defense. In ch. 19, Rita and her squad go to fight incoming Honkai Beasts, meeting Owl and the Herrscher of Ice along the way. The two of them are trying to escape the city; Rita and her squad try to stop them as part of their job (even as they worry about what happened to Durandal). Even as the Herrscher quickly freezes her squad to unconsciousness, Rita still goes to fight her and Owl; her last words before she gets frozen as well is "You... shall... not... pass...!"
...But oath and duty forbade Rita to retreat. She knew she was the final line of defense.

    Wraith
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rsz_hi3wraith.png
An A-rank Valkyrie working in the Intel department who can disguise herself into different people with a bit of makeup. Fu Hua meets up with her for intel in the Moon Shadow comic while on the run from Anti-Entropy's forces in Singapore.

  • Breast Expansion: Part of her shapeshifting has her able to alter the size of her breasts (or at the very least she uses padding or something similar). She does this to tease Fu Hua, who does not appreciate the gesture.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Wraith may be a shameless flirt and tease, but even she gets appalled when Fu Hua tells her about the lecherous Go-Go Enslavement "Welt" put her through.
  • Imposter Forgot One Detail: While impersonating "Welt", Wraith forgot the important detail that "Welt" was using a digital larynx following his Tongue Trauma by Fu Hua, something which an Anti-Entropy security guard notices. Not willing to blow her cover, Wraith makes up the lie that "Welt" grew his tongue back and gladly offers to test it on the guard, which creeps the latter out enough to let the issue go.
  • Please Put Some Clothes On: While assuring Fu Hua that she'll get the intel she seeks, Wraith asks her to change outfits. Fu Hua, who spent half a day on the run from "Welt" half naked, is confused until Wraith points out that she's not even wearing pants and that the Singaporean police arrests people for indecent exposure.
  • The Tease: She deliberately tries to flirt with the serious Fu Hua whenever she can, changing her appearance into familiar people like Theresa and Himeko, while also flaunting her breasts, much to Fu Hua's annoyance.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Wraith makes rapid use of her makeup tool to disguise herself into whoever she wants, making her the perfect infiltrator.

    Alvitr

Voiced by: Kana Ichinose (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alvitr_1.png
A young member of the Immortal Blades, the elite corps under Durandal and Rita's command, who keeps contact with Rita during the Arc City disaster in Chapter 13 and 14, as well as the Coral Island eruption in chapter 18.

She stars in the "Stellar Mythos" event in version 4.4, making up all sorts of weird theories about Durandal's Mysterious Past with her friend Susannah, and is a supporting character in the "Meow Town Escapade" event, trying to solve the mystery of Meow Town with Susannah, Rita, and Durandal.

  • The Everyman: She represents the "normal" Valkyries who just obey orders and aren't aware of the current events' ramifications (at first).
  • Fangirl: She admires Rita to the point of being very uncomfortable when the latter tells her to call her by her name instead of "Deputy".
  • Mook Lieutenant: She seems to have this role in her squad, as she speaks to Rita on behalf of the other members. She would also be the one to relay Durandal's message about the 5th Herrscher's identity to the World Serpent members in ch. 18.
  • Thought They Knew Already: Inverted - in ch. 18, when she informs the World Serpent members that the Valkyrie squad's findings led to them calling the current Herrscher the "Herrscher of Ice", Raven points out that her group has already encountered her and witnessed her powers before this exchange happened.

Valkyrie Quicksand
Her Schicksal uniform
Susannah is a B-rank Valkyrie who is usually relegated to gruntwork tasks. She's eager to please, but is shy and gets very nervous around people she looks up to, and tends to judge herself very harshly.
  • Animal Motifs: She's associated with bears. The teaser video that establishes her background depicts her as a bear cub, the hood on her casual jacket has bear ears, and her battlesuit includes a hair decoration that resembles bear ears.
  • Ascended Extra: Her first canon appearance was in London Holiday, where she assisted Rita in finding the second Divine Keynote . In-game, she first appeared in the "Stellar Mythos" event as Alvitr's friend, establishing her as another low-ranking Valkyrie. She then appeared in the Kolosten arc as an NPC who needed help completing various tasks around the town. In ver. 6.1, she becomes co-protagonist of the "Midnight Chronicle" event along with Li Sushang. In ver. 6.5, she finally becomes a playable Valkyrie, with an event dedicated to her training and a starring role as the co-protagonist of the current story arc along with Seele.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Susannah's very aware of her ditziness, and because of that she makes sure to note down anything and everything she notices in her notebook, which reveals that she's much more observant than she gives herself credit for. Her notes are so meticulous that in Chapter 38 she's able to use them to calculate her exact location in the Sea of Quanta, something that is usually borderline impossible once you get lost in it.
  • Bring News Back: In Chapter 38, Susannah is assigned this vital task. As the only "normal" member of the team, it falls to her to carry the anchor through the Sea of Quanta and back to the real world. While the others maintain the fragile link, Susannah becomes lost and nearly gives up hope before finding her Heroic Resolve. Her desperate run through the Sea is explicitly compared to Pheidippides's run during the Battle of Marathon, with her finally escaping and collapsing into Bronya's arms. Though exhausted, she manages to gasp out news of what is happening to the others.
  • Dance Battler: Her attacks combine traditional folk dance steps and double-sword techniques, and her Ultimate attack incorporates a drumbeat-style screen tapping mechanism that enhances the damage it deals, which shows her dancing and playing a tambourine during the screen taps. She also does dance steps as her idle animation, and her victory screen has her playing her tambourine. In "Meow Town Escapade", some of her training scenarios in Rita's section have her practicing a dance routine while the player taps the screen in an extended version of the mechanic for her Ultimate.
  • Dumb Blonde: When she debuted in the London Holiday manga, she was recruited by Otto because he needed, in his words, "someone who isn't too smart and doesn't look too clever". Indeed, in the next scene, she's trying to read a book that she's holding upside down while another book is open on top of her head. However, this trait has been increasingly downplayed the more that she's appeared, and now she's a Genius Ditz who suffers from a major lack of self-esteem and self-confidence.
  • Fangirl: Like Alvitr, she's very much in awe of Durandal, Rita, and Li Sushang, and can't bring herself to not refer to the latter as "Sushang-sama".
  • Genius Ditz: Susannah is a lot smarter than she thinks she is, but mentally and emotionally she can still be a child at times.
    • In the final part of act 1, where the group is on the moon, she's able to fix a transmitter than even Bronya could not do so. Yet she somehow manages to remain a scatterbrain at times, and even miss out on simple and obvious things that are going on in front of her.
    • In Chapter 36, she wears a Paper-Thin Disguise even when she doesn't have to. Her outfit is a huge trench coat combined with a mask and sunglasses. It is so eye-catching that it doesn't help in blending in at all. In fact, it makes her investigation even harder by drawing everyone's attention, but she doesn't realize it the entire time.
Passionate Residence: Oh, and I heard a suspicious girl in a trench coat came to town recently. Lots of people have been talking about her. She's a blonde foreigner...called Su or something?
Susannah: Oh, that's what we're looking for! Can you tell me exactly what she looks like...Uh, Seele, why are you tugging at me?
  • Hard Work Hardly Works: Subverted. Susannah puts in a lot of effort to try and better herself, and many people can see how hard she's working and respect her for it. However, her low self-esteem and bad habit of constantly comparing herself to exceptionally powerful people makes her feel inadequate.
  • The Host: In A Post-Honkai Odyssey, it's revealed that she is now becoming a teacher and a host for an online course named "Susannah & Stan". According to Timido, who often watches the show, she invites some retired Valkyries to teach pop science for the course, which is also one the of many ways she learned more about Schicksal.
  • Idiot Hair: In keeping with her "eager beaver" personality and tendency toward klutziness, she has a lock of hair sticking almost straight up from the top of her head.
  • The Klutz: She's prone to pratfalls and other accidents. In the first stages of "Midnight Chronicle", she spills a drink onto a mechanized HOMU doll, which seems to cause it to go wild and attack her, and falls and sprains an ankle trying to escape it. Later, she breaks what is claimed to be a priceless vase, and is nearly attacked by a group of thugs and the vase shop's owner. Both times, she's saved by Li Sushang. This is even reflected in her in-game animations, as she clumsily dashes onto the screen when she enters a stage.
  • Non-Idle Rich: Per Word of God, her family runs a gem prospecting business and is very wealthy, so she lacked for nothing growing up. However, her determination to prevail over Honkai led her to turn away from the future her parents had planned for her and become a Valkyrie for Schicksal.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Mostly self-inflicted. Along with her lack of self-esteem and self-confidence, she has a bad tendency to constantly compare herself to Shicksal's three S-rank Valkyries, all of whom are exceptionally powerful. Whenever she runs into a problem, she knows that Durandal, Rita or Sushang would be able to handle it with ease, and laments that she can't perform to their level, even if she could solve the problem herself.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: She's harshly self-critical and tends to see herself as a useless twit. Her fellow Valkyries frequently have to try to get her to see that she's far more talented and smart than she thinks she is.

    Li Sushang

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/li_shushang_jade_knight.png
Jade Knight
The daughter of Fu Hua's seventh disciple Qin Suyi, and the central character of the Shattered Swords visual novel. She appears for the first time in game in chapter 26, currently working as Schicksal's third S-rank Valkyrie under Otto's payroll.
  • Affectionate Nickname: She calls Otto "Raksha" because his name is hard to pronounce in her language.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: She's quirky, expressive and somewhat clumsy, but no less dangerous in a fight for it. This carefree mannerism is in stark contrast to her two fellow S-rank Valkyries who might as well be the image of dilligence and cold professionalism.
  • Field of Blades: Her "Sword Array" has her create a field of Stepping Stone Swords upon which she blitzes her targets with speedy attacks.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water:
    • As she's been on ice for almost half a millenia and has thus missed all of the events involving Otto, when she wakes up she's utterly confused why absolutely everyone she meets (including her fellow S-rank Valkyries) seems to have something against him.
    • This also translates into a lack of familiarity with some modern conveniences. She's utterly perplexed by computers and fancy phones, and prefers to pay for everything with cash as things such as ATMs and card-based purchasing leave her stumped.
  • Hand Seals: Sushang incorporates Taoist hand gestures when casting her sword attacks.
  • Human Popsicle: She was someone from 500 years ago; Otto had preserved her to this day, and released her around 4 months before October 2017.
  • I Owe You My Life: As Otto saved her life 500 years ago and put her on life support, she feels she owes him and he finally wakes her up sometime before ch. 26 to cash in that favor. In Kolosten she assures him she won't stand against his plan and will fight for him once (and she means only once), but will stay neutral when it's done and won't do anything to stop anyone else from acting against him after that, not even the other two S-rankers.
  • Most Common Super Power: Like the other S-rank Valkyries, she too is quite stacked in the chest area. The thing that makes her design stick out from the rest of them is that her model is just barely taller than Theresa's who is stuck looking like a 12-year-old, making her breasts almost come across as ridiculously large whenever she's standing next to other characters.
  • The Rest Shall Pass: In Kolosten Otto orders her to guard one of the routes to the church where he's enacting the final part of his grand plan. When Kiana and Hua arrive she's completely fine letting Kiana pass while she's left to fight Hua, because she's personally more invested in having a one-on-one duel with her old master and besides that, she isn't feeling confident that she can take on both at once. After their duel is over, she's left wondering what she's supposed to do now, since Otto didn't give her any orders beyond "guard this area" and nothing about what to do after she's won. She then angrily realizes that he probably wasn't even counting on her to win the fight and just needed her as a distraction to hold Fu Hua back.
  • Walking the Earth: After the crisis in Kolosten is resolved, she declines Theresa's offer to stay with the New Schicksal to go on a journey to her homeland to see with her own eyes just how much the world has changed in 500 years. Before setting out, she makes it clear that her reason for leaving isn't because she holds any animosity towards the new Overseer or any of the people she met over the past few days, she's leaving because she wasn't in any way invested in working at Schicksal as a S-rank Valkyrie and only accepted the position to repay a debt to Otto. She and Fu Hua don't get to say goodbye in person as she has to hurry to catch her train, leaving Hua to muse that she's just that kind of free spirit who's eager to discover new things and can't be bound to one place, but Hua is hopeful that they will one day meet again.

Other Major Members

    Siegfried Kaslana

Voiced by: Peng Bo * (Chinese), Tomokazu Seki (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/siegfried_kaslana_t_8.png

Kiana Kaslana's father, husband of Cecilia Schariac, and Theresa's friend. The latest heir of Kaslana family, known as a prodigy among them. Not long after he fathered Kiana, he participated in the 2nd Honkai War, which ended in his wife's death; he later ran away from Schicksal and took Kiana with him, raising her by himself. Some years after that, he left Kiana for unknown reasons.

In-game, he's shown in Chapter 5, set in a "simulation of the past". There he met Theresa and Kiana, and later tries to attack Sirin with his "released" Judgment of Shamash, although he failed to do lasting damage and would've died from his own attack were it not for Cecilia saving him.

  • Action Dad: Even after Kiana was born and Cecilia was essentially on an extended maternity leave, Siegfried was still in Schicksal's service as one of their knights, eventually becoming a key player in the Second Honkai War. Even after Cecilia's death and him leaving Schicksal, he continued to fight the Honkai on his own, with a young Kiana accompanying him. Even if "Kiana" was actually a clone, Siegfried warmed up to her after witnessing her desire to protect people, and started treating her as if she was his real daughter. When you briefly get to play as him in chapter 34, he makes it clear just how badass he is by easily mowing through hoards of enemies despite not having seen action in ages at that point.
  • Affectionate Nickname: People who are well acquainted with him like Cecilia and Shub shorten his name to "Ziggy".
  • An Arm and a Leg: He lost his left arm after he released the power of Judgement Of Shamash in the past to stop Kiana's awakening as the 2nd Herrscher. It's still quite a feat for him, though, as at least 3 other Kaslanas before him died for doing the same.
  • Ancestral Weapon: His Judgment of Shamash is a weapon—one of the Divine Keys—passed through the Kaslana family's generations. It takes the form of dual guns that contain destructive fire powers and, when fully "released", can transform into a powerful BFS, but its power once released is so tremendous that it can cause massive collateral damage and harm his body, something that happened to a few of his ancestors.
  • Badass in Distress: Gets imprisoned in the Kaslana Stigmata space and needs to get rescued by his daughters in chapter 34.
  • Batter Up!: Back when he was just a young wanderer, he fought Honkai Beasts with a metal baseball bat. It's a reference to the previous Honkai games where Kiana can equip the bat to fight zombies.
  • Battle Couple: With Cecilia, particularly in the 2nd Honkai War.
  • Belated Love Epiphany: In one of the supplementary comics, he had a strong sense of loss and yearning after Cecilia was taken back by Schicksal, and vowed to see her again. Two years later, it's shown that Cecilia had a similar sentiment; once the two got reunited (by his deal with Otto), they immediately embraced each other.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In the 2nd Honkai War, when he was told by Welt to bring Theresa to safety while Welt fights Sirin, he promised to come back and help Welt. He later did come back, just in time to save Welt from the "masked clown" (Otto in disguise).
  • Bumbling Dad: One of the things that Kiana remembers about her dad is that he sucked at being a dad; between trying to teach her how to drink and flirt, on top of being a terrible cook and drinking himself silly on Kiana's birthday, Siegfried definitely wasn't the model parent. But none of that mattered to the young Kiana, as long as she was fighting alongside her dad in order to get better at protecting the people she loves.
  • Call-Back: Young Siegfried recalled that he was the 2nd Kaslana to run away from their home. The 1st one is someone we've known before - Kallen.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Like most Kaslanas, he's compelled to save his allies whenever he sees them in danger, oftentimes to his detriment. So much that Welt had to rein him in multiple times, trying to make him avoid danger to himself and see the bigger picture. When he was younger, this was what compelled him to save Cecilia and try to bring her back even though she's a Schicksal Valkyrie.
Siegfried: To be honest, I never really liked the idea of sacrifice. I never believed that anyone had to give up their lives so that the rest of us can live happily ever after. I hate it if people had to die for my sake. That would really leave a bad taste in my mouth. And if my wife finds out that I allowed this to happen... She'll make me regret it for the rest of my cowardly existence.
  • Clones Are People, Too: When he tried to rescue Kiana from Schicksal, he ended up taking her clone, K-423, instead. For a few years after that he would act somewhat detached to hernote , but after an event where she showed the will to protect others (basically the Kaslanas' will), Siegfried was delighted and decided to raise her like his real daughter, giving her the name "Kiana"note . She would later cherish this as "her best birthday present".
  • Cooldown Manipulation: The M part of his Stigmata set reduces the cooldown of weapon active skills by 40%. This piece is helpful both for certain useful weapon skills with long cooldowns, and for the other parts of the Stigmata set and their Set Bonus, which are tied to using (and spamming) weapon skills.
  • Disappeared Dad: He left Kiana a few years before she enrolled to St. Freya Academy. Theresa claims to know his whereabouts, which she uses to convince Kiana to partake in the academy. He went out to seek secrets and truth about Schicksal, and he left Kiana because he doesn't want the Herrscher inside her to be awakened again because of him.
  • Don't Call Me "Sir": When she first met Siegfried, Cecilia called him "Sir Siegfried". He told her to just call him "Ziggy".
  • Dramatic Irony: He once claimed that he hates having people sacrifice themselves for their sake. Then later, Cecilia sacrificed her life to protect him and comfort Sirin for one last time.
  • Expy: He's a dead ringer for Dante - the hair, the Badass Longcoat, the use of two guns and a BFS, the lecherousness, the laid-back attitude, the fondness for pizza, and the ability to turn into a half-demonic form. Like Dante, he gets his half-demonic form through getting impaled by his own sword.
  • Fanboy: Back when he was a young boy (around The '80s), he was a fan of a mecha anime called "Arahato". The anime was what inspired him to go out and become a "hero" himself. Later, before the start of the 21st century, he found out that said anime was, in fact, produced by Anti-Entropy (as a means of income) and that they've made a 1-to-1 scale model of the mech that can also go to outer space. When Welt Young revealed the mecha to him, he briefly had a dorky fanboy moment before Welt had to cut him off.
  • Handicapped Badass: During the events of the Moon Shadow comic, Siegfried meets Fu Hua in order to help her foil Cocolia's plan. However, since Siegfried is a wanted fugitive by Schicksal, the encounter doesn't start on a friendly note. Fu Hua ran three simulations in her mind with Fenghuang Down and found that there's no scenario in which she could beat him without suffering grievous injuries in return, despite Siegfried's missing arm.
  • Handsome Lech: Theresa once says that he's a shameless flirt. Best shown in Chapter 5 (which takes place in a simulation of the past) where he tries to flirt with the girl that Theresa brought with her, not realizing that it's Kiana, his own daughter. In a supplementary comic, even the holographic projection of him in a fight simulator compliments Kiana's "growth", causing her to punch his face. Said hologram even mistakes Mei and Kiana as a lesbian couple, though he makes a side comment of it being hot.
  • Happily Married: One of Siegfried's main concerns in the Second Eruption comic is that he's torn between the Kaslanas' nature to protect the weak at the cost of their lives and wanting to stay together with his loving wife and daughter. Cecilia, for her part, is quick to reassure him that she knows his heart is just and he will make the right decision, and she'll fully support him either way and share the burden if it comes to that.
  • Heroic Willpower: In the past, he once encountered Welt Young of Anti-Entropy, who blocked his way to Cecilia and tried to subdue him with Star of Eden's power of gravity. Welt warned him that the force of 10G (10 times normal gravity) would hurt him if he resisted, but Siegfried fought back against the force, stood back up and tried to attack him again. Siegfried got punched in the gut by Welt to unconsciousness for his troubles.
  • Identical Grandson: He apparently looks similar to his oldest ancestor, Kevin Kaslana, from the previous major civilization, down to the similar hairstyle (when Kevin got older at least), jacket and weapon. In the Elan Palatinus comic, it's shown that Kallen's father, Sir Francis Kaslana, also resembled Siegfried when shown from the back, particularly with the blue longcoat and dual-wielding the Judgement of Shamash.
  • Lethal Chef: He's shown to toast the pizza bread he made using Judgement of Shamash. In the Second Eruption comic, Theresa winces and refuses Cecilia's offer for dinner as soon as she hears Siegfried is the cook, as his previous new dish tasted like charcoal according to her.
Theresa: *thinking* I have no idea why Cecilia tolerated Siegfried's terrifying cooking. Was it love? Or weird taste? Her man can't cook to save his own life. He makes charred disasters, not food.
Siegfried (younger): *thinking* Whoa, [Cecilia] really trusted me and my cooking? Even I have trouble eating that!
  • Like Father, Like Son: A variant with his daughter. He's heroic, tough, straightforward, stubborn, a pervert, and a bad cook... just like Kiana. On a more serious note, she also shares his sentiment of hating to have his closest people sacrifice themselves to help him.
  • Only in It for the Money: In his younger years, he claimed that he wanted to get some good payment if he can escort Cecilia to her base; "private detectives don't work for free, you know." The real reason he insisted on escorting her, however, is to take her to see the world around, because he saw that her life was so sheltered that she thought of her mission more than her own life. To the point that he intentionally broke his motorbike's handle brake just so he can have an excuse to walk with Cecilia around the towns. He would later say that "it's not about the money any more" when she pointed it out.
  • Red Baron: He was once known as the "Schicksal Knight".
  • Reduced Mana Cost: The T part of his Stigmata set reduces the SP cost of weapon skills by 25%.
  • Set Bonus: For his stigmata set:
    • 2 pieces: Within 10 seconds after using weapon active skill, the next use of it gains 20% total damage multiplier. This effect can be stacked up to 5 times as long as you use the weapon skill at least once before the 10 second interval ends.
    • 3 pieces: after using weapon active skill 6 times, enter "Hero Mode" that lasts 20 seconds. During this mode, gain 70% physical damage, 25% attack speed and move speed, and immunity to most debuffs.
  • Sink or Swim Mentor: Implied to be the reason he left Kiana in the first place. He wanted her to learn how to survive on her own and believed leaving her to her devices was the best way to do it.
  • Super Mode: In the 2nd Eruption comic, when Einstein examines the data inside his Judgment of Shamash, Siegfried meets "Kevin", his ancestor, who recognizes the former as "his progeny" and then stabs Siegfried's body with his sword. This unlocks the latent power of the Kaslana gene inside him, allowing him to turn partially monstrous, giving him extra strength. However, this also comes with an overbearing urge to "fight the Honkai" at all costs, which he tries his hardest to suppress. Years after that, this power seems to have slowly consumed him, requiring him to get some suppressors from Raiden Ryoma.
  • So Proud of You: Says this to his daughters word for word after reuniting with them in chapter 34, telling them he is so happy that they both grew into wonderful young women.
  • Superpowerful Genetics: Due to being a descendant of Kevin, he has the genes of the ice Honkai Beast Parvati, which are activated in the 2nd Eruption Manga. As a result, much like Kevin, his body temperature is much lower than normal, as well as being capable of generating ice constructs. Due to this, he is also able to unleash the Judgement of Shamash's Zeroth Power without issue, and is also the only person other than Kevin to have used its Might of An-utu form.
  • Super-Strength: He's physically strong enough to hold the pressing hands of the 2 halves of Assaka with his own.
  • Trauma Conga Line: This man has had it no less rough than any of his known blood relatives.
    • He ran from Schicksal and the Kaslana name to pursue his own destiny. Then, the woman he fell in love with was taken back to Schicksal, leading him back to where he started in the pursuit of love.
    • After that, his beloved wife gave her life to save him and countless others in the 2nd Eruption, leaving him alone with their daughter, Kiana. And then he lost her too during the botched rescue of K423, leaving him with only the clone, soon herself rechristened "Kiana", to look after. Wrse, his regret over losing his first daughter is not quite correct; she survived but lost her memory, and has been living under an assumed name for years as Durandal, Otto's strongest Valkyrie.
    • Even so, he managed to raise Kiana with a relatively loving childhood, only to leave her behind when Sirin's lingering malevolence manifested and caused a disaster, heavily implied to be a response to his enmity with the 2nd Herrscher in life. He sealed the 2nd Herrscher away and then left to reduce the risk of her awakening.
    • During his wandering, he was attacked by World Serpent and had Judgement of Shamash taken from him, and he was then trapped in the Stigma Space of the Kaslana bloodline. And since he can't unlock the power of the Kaslana Stigmata, he's left to struggle fruitlessly to escape and return to reality, his identity slowly eroding with every attempt. Even so, he refuses to give up. Why? Because even after all this, he still has a daughter waiting for him. Poor man is losing pieces of who he is just by continuing his escape attempts, but he chooses to cling on tightly to the love he still has.
  • Walking the Earth: Before he met Cecilia he wandered across the world. He apparently ran away from home because he didn't want to be bound to the family's duties to Schicksal and wanted to see the world and be a hero in his own way. He felt like a ninja (inspired by his childhood anime) back then, but he figured out that his mother vouched for him to Otto to stop his pursuing forces.
Siegfried (to Cecilia): People locked me up in a stupid house. That gave me plenty of experience and ninja skills for breaking out of places. ... After I left home, I went to a ton of places. I took part in the Shenzhou dumpling fest and had hanami picnics under sakura trees. I went to the Afican savanna and hunted lions with the Maasai. The world is a big and exciting place. I can't imagine being locked up in a house for the rest of my life. It'd be a real shame knowing that I've missed the world itself.
  • The Worf Effect: Some time before the events of ch. 13 of the gamenote , he and Raiden Ryoma came under attack from two agents from World Serpent, Raven and Jackal. Despite maintaining control of his ICHOR infection, Siegfried is implied to have been defeated and captured by these emerging threats, as they later give Kevin the Judgement of Shamash and assure him that Siegfried has been given every measure of comfort befitting one of Kevin's guests. It didn't help that he only has one good arm at that point.

    Amber

Voiced by: Yukari Tamura (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hi3rd_amber_001.png
Otto's secretary and aide, Amber relays the most basic directives when the former isn't around. She makes her first in-game appearance in chapter 26.

  • Artificial Human: She seems to be a clone made up from Kallen's genes, and her arms are revealed to be robotic. When she loses both arms after venturing too close to the corrosive powers of the Herrscher of Death, Otto saves her and tells her to go back to Schicksal's HQ to treat her wounds and get some parts replacements.
  • Dub Name Change: Downplayed; she is called "Kohaku" in the Japanese version, which means "amber".
  • Mouth of Sauron: Sometimes, Otto sends her in his stead to convey vital information. Theresa eventually gets sick of hearing her when Amber lies about the sequence of events surrounding Sirin's defeat, and would rather get the truth from Otto himself, to which he responds by brainwashing her with "Mimic: Fenghuang Down".
  • No Sense of Humor: When Otto comments on how Durandal is too powerful to be merely rated as a S-rank Valkyrie, he jokingly suggests making a Rank Durandal. Amber immediately gets started with the paperwork, forcing Otto to dissuade her, because if that happens, the other girls will call it "Rank DD", or "Doo-doo".
  • Number Two: Amber is shown to supervise the battlefield from Schicksal's headquarters when Otto himself is on the field pursuing his own agenda. When the situation becomes dire, however, even she hesitates to cross the Godzilla Threshold.
  • Significant Double Casting: Being a clone of Kallen like Theresa, she shares the same voice actor, though obviously with a deeper register considering her adult body.

    Murata Ryusuke
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/murata_ryusuke.png
One of the focus characters of the Alien Space supplementary comic, set in 2005. A scientist working for Schicksal, and Murata Himeko's father. He was in charge of supervising the 4th Divine Key, a satellite that works to control the winds, weather and climate. He's also closely acquainted with an "alien".

  • Ambition Is Evil: He eventually went mad with achieving his ambition of continuing the Project ARK that he betrayed his Sugar companion and took the Sugars' powers for himself; he also claims to Welt that Himeko's life meant nothing to him and he's ready to sacrifice her if he needs it to achieve his goal. He adamantly claimed that he did everything for the sake of humanity's future, but Welt pointed out that he basically had "lost" his humanity.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Some years prior to the comic's present, he had a sickly wife, who encouraged him to keep carrying on his dreams of space development and not worry about her health. Even though he decided to go with it, it went All for Nothing as his space project ended up being canceled and the news of his wife's death came not long after. He's furious and frustrated at the whole thing, but he decided that he shouldn't give up - for he feels that his dreams are for the sake of the whole humanity and the universe. This is what convinced Peppermint to team up with him.
  • Dead Man Writing: He left a letter for Himeko that would only be found when he's dead, stating that he did all he could to stay faithful to his goals, but won't impose his vision on her and apologizes for being an irresponsible dad. At least, that's what Welt wants Himeko to believe, given it would be too much to reveal to Himeko that Ryusuke went mad with the power of the Sugars and had to be put down for the good of both humanity and the Sugars.
  • Defector from Decadence: He figured that Otto wanted to cause a big storm in the US using the 4th Divine Key, so he decided to seek help from Anti-Entropy to stop the Overseer's plans.
  • Diving Save: When he and Tesla were in the Anti-Entropy base in New Mexico, when he notices the body-controlled guard about to fire at Tesla, he pushed her out of the way, causing him to take the bullet on his upper arm. He latter claimed to her that it's Only a Flesh Wound.
  • Face–Heel Turn: In the closing chapters of Alien Space, Ryusuke reveals to Welt that he has been thinking of following in the footsteps of Project ARK's space exploration, reasoning that looking up at the stars and forsaking the attachment to Earth is the best hope for humanity's future. When Welt retorts that the endeavour would come at too high of a cost for humanity's present on top of the Honkai threat, Ryusuke grows increasingly hostile, dismissing Welt as no different from Schicksal. It is, in this moment, that Ryusuke betrays and murders his Sugar companion, taking the latter's power for himself and becoming a threat to both humanity and the diminutive aliens.
  • Fusion Dance: Peppermint can fuse with Ryusuke (akin to the Venom Symbiote) in case he needed to kick some butts, but he only would do so as a last resort; as seen when he fused with said alien to kill the body-controlled guards that hounded him and Tesla. Later on, he showcases the further extent of the alien's power as he fought Welt.
  • Out-Gambitted: At first, he managed to slip out of Otto's mind-reading (while he did meet his daughter as he claimed to Otto, his real intention was to rendezvous with the Anti-Entropy's members). However, Otto was one step ahead; he had prepared a contingency plan in case this happens. When Tesla and Einstein tried to crack through the control device of the 4th Divine Key that Ryusuke gave them, it suddenly caught an "error" in its system and proceeded to create an incoming storm that slowly approaches Houston, USA.
  • Psychic Block Defense: The alien that tags along with him can do this for him. When he claimed to Otto that he wanted to go to America to meet his daughter in her college, the Overseer used his copy of Fenghuang Down on Ryusuke, but the former didn't manage to find anything wrong in the latter's mind. Said alien can eat Fenghuang Down's feathers, which is impressive given it's one of the most powerful Divine Keys.
  • Space Master: Using the "Alien Key" from the Sugars, he can move into, and attack from, a higher dimension, leaving his targets as "characters in a fiction book, at the mercy of its author". Welt could only counter it by using his connection to the Imaginary Space (as a Herrscher) to catch up to Ryusuke and use Star of Eden's Third Power to defeat him.

    Elizabeth "Nagamitsu" McSmith

Voiced by: Rena Hasegawa (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nagamitsu.png

Schicksal’s top scientist, in charge of lab no. 1504, also known as "Nagamitsu" (hence her nickname). She first appears in chapter 25-EX to assist Otto and Durandal in their latest experiment with the Imaginary Tree, and she first shows herself to the protagonists in chapter 26.

  • Fangirl: Admits to be a huge fan of Dr. Tesla, allowing her to hit it off pretty easily with the latter when they meet.
  • High-Class Glass: Sports an elegant monocle, which appropriately looks like a magnifying glass stuck to her eye, befitting her top scientist status.
  • One-Steve Limit: She jokes about this in one unlockable scene in ch. 25-EX. Back then there were already several "Elizabeths" and several "McSmiths" in Schicksal; when young Bianka first entered the lab, she called Elizabeth "Nagamitsu" because Bianka thought the lab was named after the head scientist. It later stuck with other personnels, and she ended up deciding it to be her nickname.

Mecha and Equipment

    RPC- 6626
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rsz_800px_rpc_6626_enemy.png

One of the bosses of Chapter 5, and also appearing as one of the bosses of Everlasting Memory stages. It's a Schicksal-made VTOL fighter plane which was built to fight the Honkai. However, it went berserk because of the 2nd Herrscher's influence.

It's also the last boss of the Co-op Raid stage, "Matrix Space", acting as the "virtual antivirus" that gets corrupted and goes berserk, as well as an early boss in another Raid stage "Squad Snowwolf".

  • Alpha Strike: After it Turns Red, one of its moves is to use the rotary cannon, middle laser and area bombing simultaneously.
  • Death from Above:
    • It has a move where it launches multiple bombs upward, which all fall down onto a designated area a few moments later.
    • In some of the battles against it (notably as the SS-rank version in Memorial Arena), it's capable of simply floating up, away from most of your characters' reach (except Bronyanote ) and it can keep attacking from above, including with one move where it flies to a direction while dropping bombs.
  • Gatling Good: It's armed with 2 rotary cannons on the sides that can rapid fire shots.
  • Macross Missile Massacre: It can fire multiple missiles that track your position and leave patches of paralyzing electricity on the impact zone. They can be deflected towards it with your attacks if you react quickly enough.
  • Promoted to Playable: You can get to use the plane in two of the weekly events, as well as in one of the levels in the Co-op Raid, Snowwolf. The gameplay turns into an Unexpected Shmup Level.
  • Sphere of Destruction: It can emit an expanding blast of electricity out of its body that can paralyze you if you get hit.
  • Spread Shot: When it Turns Red, it may periodically fire small shots from its cockpit area.
  • Villain Override: By Sirin.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: It has a large cannon in the middle of its body that can fire a large continuous laser.

    Baldur
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/baldurmech.png
One of the bosses of Chapter 8, acting as one of Schicksal HQ's head of the (automated) guardian troops. It's dispatched to fight Himeko and the other rebels. It also becomes one of the last floor bosses in the Infinite Abyss mode after an update.

  • Deadly Lunge: One of its common attacks is to perform a long-range lunging stab, usually after dashing to a direction first.
  • Dual Wielding: It wields 2 swords that it can combine into one Double Weapon for certain attacks.
  • King Mook: It's the boss variant of the Mysteltainn Mecha-Mooks. Appropriately, it's also colored deep red.
  • Promoted to Playable: In Schicksal HQ Open World, in one of the storyline missions, you get to hijack an inactive Baldur and control it to move quickly around the base. Later, you can also build your own Baldur, although it requires Ai-chan to reach Tech Lv. 15 and even then, it's a Rare Random Drop from the "hangar" where the production of the robots is played like a gacha, but with special materials from the Open World (and the particular gacha that produces Baldur is littered with other useless bots).
  • Spin Attack: It has a quick-moving and wide-reaching spin attack with its swords. In a variant, its strongest attack after it Turns Red (and its Ultimate Skill as the playable version) has it firing continuous lasers from its swords while spinning, hitting all around it at long ranges.
  • Sword Beam: One of its attacks after it Turns Red is to fire crescent beams from its Double Weapon. In a variant, another attack has it plant its double swords to the ground to create creeping waves that goes to multiple directions.
  • Sword Plant: It has an attack where it jumps up and then stabs the ground with both swords.
  • Turns Red: Upon reaching half health, its blue Tron Lines turn yellow and it whips out stronger attacks.
  • Videogame Flight: In Schicksal HQ Open World, it can fly around, which allows you to access certain locations at a time limit quicker.

    Heimdall

One of the bosses of Chapter 9. A large robot made by Schicksal to guard their important facilities and fight off intruders.

St. Freya Academy

Also known as Schicksal's Far East Branch, located in Soukai City. It is an Extranormal Institute meant to teach and train young girls to become good, powerful and responsible Valkyries to fight the Honkai threats. It was founded by Theresa Apocalypse, who became its principal.

Schicksal Anti-Honkai Special Forces

A special unit of Schicksal created at some point between the late Honkai era and the post-Honkai era. Initially there were two squads, but its numbers increased to four after the reopening of St. Freya Academy to give the graduates field training. They consist of Captains, or Acting Captains in case the actual captain is unavailable or on a different mission, and members from other Schicksal branches like the prep school or St. Freya. The Captains can also have authority over members of other squads if necessary.
