Characters / Digimon Ghost Game - Protagonists

    In General
  • Breaking Old Trends:
    • Unlike the Digivices used in previous anime series, they are not handheld devices, but rather wrist-mounted just like the Digivices from the Digimon V-Tamer 01 manga.
    • Unlike past members of the franchise where the protagonists seldomly get hit by Digimon attacks (and the few times it happens it's taken very seriously), just about anyone can be hit by a Digimon and end up mutated, infected by a weird condition or transformed into an object. This naturally means any of the protagonists can be put out of action this way, and the only thing that doesn't occur to them is getting killed outright.
    • There's no one in the group who plays the role of The Lancer, which as been a series tradition since Digimon Adventure. Additionally, there's no human Sixth Ranger who joins the team later on in the series. While Espimon hits many of the same story beats, rather having a partner of his own, he serves as a second Digimon partner for Hiro.
  • Chromatic Arrangement: In two layers, taking from both the RGB and CYMK color spectrums:
    • Hiro is the Red in that he typically wears red and his Digivice's bar fills red when evolving, but he and Gammamon also embody the RGB color spectrum as a whole in that the former has green eyes and outfits that typically accent red underclothes with a blue top, while Gammamon is white as a Child, Perfect or Ultimate and each of his Adults is predominantly one of the aforementioned colors.
    • Ruli is the Green and her outfits tend to favor mint greens or forest greens, while Angoramon and her Digivice are the yellows of the CYMK spectrum.
    • Kiyoshiro's outfits tend to favor dark blues and black, while Jellymon and the color bar of his Digivice are magenta.
    • Espimon represents the cyan of the CYMK.
    • GulusGammamon and his Digivolved form represent black.
  • Dark World: With their Digivice, they can activate an area to fight Digimon without harming the real world. They all have different kinds of environments, which were stored on DiM cards containing data of the Digital World from Hokuto with a second batch being delivered in episode 14:
  • Free-Range Children: Hiro's father has disappeared (on top of having a penchant for being unhelpfully cryptic in the few messages they can exchange) and his mother is working overseas. The other two's parents have also yet to appear, and Ruli is the only human member who lives at home rather than in a school dorm.
  • Gaining the Will to Kill: Albeit reluctantly, the group's eventual decision to start using lethal force against Digimon who cannot be reasoned with and pose serious threats to humanity coincides with their first super evolution. Vamdemon narrowly escapes with his life in Canoweissmon's debut, but the Perfect proves strong enough in his next fight to crack Digitamamon's shell and allow SymbareAngoramon to slay him.
  • Humanity Is Infectious: The further on the series goes, the more that enemy Digimon make remarks about how Gammamon, Angoramon and Jellymon seem to have been affected by living among humans. Digitamamon states that Angoramon is more human than he is Digimon after being slain by him, Petermon is visibly disgusted that Gammamon smells of humans, and Kuzuhamon feels as if he's been tainted by human society. The trio regard their closeness with humanity as nothing but beneficial and it's one of the main factors allowing them to evolve beyond Perfects.
  • Kid Hero: The human protagonists are around 13 to 14 years old at the start of the series, with the Digimon protagonists being mentally around the same age sans Gammamon who is much younger.
  • Martial Pacifist: The group is likely the most pacifistic team in the franchise, but they are very much willing to fight if they have to protect people. As the series goes on, they begin facing foes where they have to make the tough decision to use lethal force, and they do so reluctantly.
  • Physical God: All three partners eventually gain the power to become Ultimates/Megas, which in this series, according to the creators, is basically a Digimon having ascended to godhood.
  • Plot Armor: The human trio have a rather unique one for the franchise where they aren't protected from falling victim to hostile Digimon (it routinely happens, and it leaves the Digimon protagonists unable to evolve), but they are assuredly going to stop the attacks or at least make the Digimon responsible to think twice for awhile. Granted when multiple cases can potentially cause dozens to hundreds of deaths or serious injuries if left unchecked, the price for failing to neutralize even one hostile Digimon is way too immense to afford.
  • The Power of Love: While their bonds both amongst each other and with their friends outside of the team have always factored into how they develop the ability to evolve, it's the group's love for humanity above all else that allows them to achieve their Ultimate forms - Gammamon's and Hiro's love and belief in the goodness of humans and desire to unite Digimon and humanity, Angoramon's love of human culture, Ruli's desire to try countless activities in her search for a hobby she'll love and their shared desired to protect the human world, Jellymon's love of human behavior and her and Kiyoshiro's desire to protect the people they love and care about.
  • Shouldn't We Be in School Right Now?: Hiro and Ruli's studies often take them out of the picture if the incidents and their classes clash. However, Kiyoshiro doesn't have to worry about this as he already has his Master's Degree and Doctorate and could afford to miss school...which leaves him the one that has to do the most work as a result. Later episodes reveal that he himself can also be busy with whatever project he was tasked to do which is often used as a way to run them afoul of the Monster of the Week.
  • Super Wrist-Gadget: They all wear a Digivice-V-, which is a wrist device similar to a smartwatch or fitness tracker, that also happens to be similar to the Vital Bracelet Digital Monster v-pet. Fittingly, its first v-pet appearance is the Vital Bracelet.
  • Thou Shall Not Kill: With the exception of GulusGammamon, everybody in the group has an aversion to resorting to lethal force and prefer to talk down their opponents at the first opportunity; especially after Gammamon was traumatized by Bokomon's murder. Their points are further proven when many Digimon are friendly creatures looking to create their own society, and Digimon can't be exterminated guilt-free in this setting because they lose their past lives upon death. But as the series goes on, this mindset starts causing issues — they run into more and more Digimon who are too strong to defeat or have no intention of turning over a new leaf, and Hokuto is of no help when Hiro has the chance to ask him for advice regarding these situations. While Gammamon fully intended to stop Vamdemon by any means necessary after evolving into Canoweissmon for the first time, it's Angoramon who scores the team's first intentional kill in the episode against his former friend who has degenerated into a deadly Serial Killer - and it's only a few episodes after that he accidentally kills a Hanumon. The group also don't object when other Digimon come in to dispose of particularly unpleasant Digimon or them to be arrested.
  • Timed Power-Up: The group is unable to sustain their Perfect forms for extensive periods of time. Whenever they're about to devolve, the Digivices begin flashing red and letting out warning tones.
  • Two Guys and a Girl: The team is initially composed of two male humans, Hiro and Kiyoshiro, and one female human, Ruli, as well as two male Digimon, Gammamon and Angoramon, and one female Digimon, Jellymon.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Evolving to Perfect results in the Digimon trio's personalities changing - it's not a big deal for Gammamon and Jellymon, who assumes a more mature mindset on top of boosted intellect and mellow out respectively, but Angoramon becomes obsessed with protecting his friends and extremely violent whenever he evolves into Lamortmon.

Humans

    Hiro Amanokawa
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/245px_amanokawa_hiro.png
Voiced by: Mutsumi Tamura

A 1st-year junior high student at the private school Hazakura Academy, 13 years old at the start of the series. He is a levelheaded boy who handles most things on his own, with others often relying on him. He never turns down a request. He has a highly inquisitive mind and takes an interest in Digimon after meeting Gammamon.

  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Hiro brushes off Kiyo's warnings about the "man-eating mansion" Digitamamon lives at, despite meeting dozens of Digimon who were the basis for similar rumors like Clockmon. Largely Justified since Digitamamon is Angoramon's friend, so he had no reason to suspect him until he sees Angoramon and Digitamamon falling out from the window fighting.
  • Batman Gambit:
    • In Episode 40, Gammamon broke his tablet by chewing on it. Gammamon denies this, so he pretended to offer him chocolate only to stick the tablet into his mouth, which matched his bitemarks. It led to them having a fallout. Fortunately, their relationship gets repaired in time to confront Calamaramon.
    • Attempts it against Regulusmon of all Digimon in Episode 66. He interrupts the fight between him and BloomLordmon to synchro with him, which he automatically takes as the boy accepting his social darwinist mindset at last. In reality, Gammamon was communicating with him through the Digivice, and he was actually tricking him into being dispelled from Gammamon's body and bringing the fight to the center of Gammamon's mind. Then Regulusmon snaps and attacks him once he finds out that he's tricked and ends up seemingly killing Gammamon himself, but at least it allows the protagonists to deal with him on private terms like they did with any other Digimon.
  • Berserk Button: Putting Gammamon in mortal danger is one of the very few things that will piss Hiro off.
  • Big Brother Instinct:
    • He took Hokuto's request to treat Gammamon as his new little brother to heart and can be a bit of a doting big brother at times.
    • The conflict with Jyureimon shows that at least part of the reason Hiro is so hesitant to kill enemy Digimon, even the worst of them who aren't willing to be redeemed or listen to reason, is because of the effect killing would have on Gammamon's innocence.
  • Break the Cutie:
    • Not QUITE broken yet, but Hiro was clearly on the verge of breaking in Episode 21 after he learned that Archnemon does eat the brains of her victims and was about to prey on Gammamon.
    • When the Chamblemon in Episode 38 decide to make him a mushroom plantation and mercilessly grab mushrooms from his body to empower themselves, he's broken for real. He snaps out of it once the incident ends, however.
    • When Regulusmon inflicts a seemingly lethal injury to Siriusmon, he's instantly thrown into the Despair Event Horizon. There's no rage, no tears. The face he makes indicates that he's just dead on the inside.
  • Breaking Old Trends:
    • He doesn't wear the franchises' traditional goggles, making him the second main character not to wear them since Masaru in Savers - and as with Haru, he's one of the only leaders whose name doesn't contain a ta or da.
    • Unlike other party leaders who have some sort of Plot Armor that prevents them from falling victim to anything but the worst scenarios, Hiro frequently falls prey to hostile Digimon without a chance to fight back, sometimes even at the start of an episode. He takes fewer direct hits compared to Ruli or Kiyoshiro, though.
    • Humans having more than one Digimon partner is not uncommon, but Hiro is the first leader to have two partners: Gammamon and Espimon.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: In comparison to the incarnation of Taichi from the Adventure remake, Hiro is a lot more focused on logic and tactics rather than brawn or being willing to jump into a fight - and is much more adept with technology. Overall, he rivals Takato and Haru for being the calmest of the main protagonists. This, later on, becomes an issue when dealing with Digimon that will not listen to reason and must be defeated and even when he's willing to do so, it doesn't happen guilt-free.
  • Consistent Clothing Style: He switches up his outermost layer according to the occasion or weather, but the core of his outfit is always his trademark red hoodie. Even in episodes taking place in summer he simply swaps out his usual one for a short sleeved open chest red hoodie.
  • Despair Event Horizon: If there's one thing that throws him all the way to there and beyond, it's losing his stepbrother Gammamon. He's understandably shocked when Regulusmon tells him that Gammamon is erased (that thankfully turns out to be false), but when Regulusmon also tricks and kills Siriusmon in their fight, he crossed it for real, with an expression comparable to Juri after Beelzebumon kills Leomon.
  • Disappeared Dad: Quite literally. His dad suddenly vanished one day, leaving behind a small crater in his office with a Digivice -V- in the center.
  • Distinguishing Mark: Hiro has a jagged scar on his left earlobe.
  • Extreme Doormat: Downplayed. He is far from spineless but does not refuse requests since he considers it easier to just accept them. This comes in handy when his face is stolen by Asuramon, where Angoramon asks Asuramon to return all the stolen faces, and it works!
  • Genre Blindness: Suffers from a pretty bad example in Episode 21. This lady suddenly shows up, claims to be a friend of his mom, and invites him and his friends to see an insect exhibit. Yet despite the way she knows about Gammamon and how she lets them into an old mall that was abandoned years earlier full of webs, he doesn't suspect anything is wrong until AFTER the lady mentions eating brains. The fact that she knows about Gammamon in the first place should be a giant red flag, as no human outside of the child trio and Hiro's father should know about Digimon's existence in general. Even if that can be excused by Hiro having told his mother about Gammamon offscreen, he still should have wondered why his mother would tell others about Gammamon.
  • Geodesic Cast: Subverted. Just like Ruli before him, he's been shown to, to some extent, be capable of commanding Angoramon or Jellymon if their owners are absent or fell victim to a Digimon's powers. In Episode 40, he even orders Jellymon to attack Calamaramon.
  • Guile Hero: He is shown to be a clever person being able to understand the Monster of the Week's desires and powers. Such as when he threw an acorn against Clockmon's Rapid Aging turning it into a tree that nearly crushes him or tricking Sistermon Ciel into fighting against MetalFantomon in exchange for a kart, which she believed was modified to go faster.
  • Helicopter Parents: In Episode 19, when he finally decides Gammamon is ready to be a little more independent and sends him off to run an errand by himself for the first time... while he, Kiyoshiro, and Jellymon follow a few yards behind in secret.
  • Heroic BSoD: When Regulusmon seemingly slays Siriusmon by blowing a seemingly lethal wound on his chest, he looks absolutely dead on the inside.
  • It's All My Fault: Believes that the Gyukimon incident in Episode 39 was because he brought Ryudamon with him instead of leaving him at Bakumon's office. Granted that Bakumon was out of office for a day and a half, he might have ironically made the right choice instead. A rampaging Gyukimon in the city instead of an isolated resort site would've been an invitation to disaster.
  • Lovable Rogue: Downplayed. He's very much a helpful and kind person. But he's also shown hiding his father's watch from the police, despite it being a potential clue to his disappearance. He also shows no remorse or fear in picking a lock to access a crime scene, going out at midnight to investigate or deal with Digimon incidents, or barging into off-limit places like the history club classroom of his school or abandoned settlements.
  • Master of Unlocking: Hiro first displays this skill in the first episode by picking the lock of the door to the auditorium, which was closed off due to being a crime scene, and later breaks into a go-kart track to investigate a Digimon incident.
  • Meaningful Name: His given name "Hiro" is a Japanese name that means "space", while his family name "Amanokawa" means "Milky Way". The evolutions of his partner, Gammamon, are named after different stars.
  • Mineral MacGuffin: After Episode 61, he keeps a dormant Moon=Milleniumon in his pocket, presumably planning on using it later.
  • Nature Lover: He enjoys the outdoors, which sets up a camping episode. This brings him into conflict with a Jyureimon that is attacking people.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When Regulusmon tells him that Gammamon has ceased to exist and when Siriusmon seemingly gets killed by Regulusmon, the usually guile and confident Hiro breaks character and looks like an empty wreck. Hiro never falls into total despair before this (not even after being tortured by Chamblemon), so when it happens, it tells that whatever's happening is obviously bad news.
  • Parental Abandonment: With Hokuto seeming to have willingly gone to stay in the Digital World and his mother leading a busy work schedule, Hiro is forced to live at his school's dorms.
  • The Reliable One: Seen as one by his classmates and teachers, who usually ask him for help with homework or labor. Lampshaded by Ruli in Episode 8 as being unusually capable of feats without much issue.
  • Technical Pacifist: He's unwilling to kill opponents, but beating them down so they have no choice but to talk or retreat, or letting other Digimon cut loose ends with them isn't off limits.
  • Tranquil Fury: He spends a good portion of Episode 44 in an obviously foul mood, especially when he's dealing with Fukatsu and Jellymon. He doesn't show it outright unlike when Archnemon tries to eat Gammamon's brain, but considering he's willing to interrogate Fukatsu about the connections between Reward Elf and the warehouse collapse and he looks pissed off when he's asking if Jellymon was behind the whole thing too, it's clear that he isn't pleased.
  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: Unlike his wacky father who seemingly went to the Digital World both willingly and unwillingly and sometimes sends dangerous Digimon to his son's doorsteps, Hiro is a serious and levelheaded kid.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He has no qualms fighting female Digimon or landing the hurt on them, even when they are very near human in appearance. Justified, considering a large portion of those tend to be too dangerous to be left alone doing their own thing.

    Ruli Tsukiyono
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/227px_tsukiyono_ruli.png
Voiced by: Yuu Kobayashi

A 13-year-old first-year junior high student at the beginning of the series who attends an integrated junior high and high school for girls. She runs an immensely popular social media account called 'Lirurun'. She is sociable and has many friends. She is looking for what fits her best and wants to be involved in everything.

  • Arbitrary Skepticism: When Ruli learns from Hiro about the rumors of the "man-eating mansion" Digitamamon lives at from Kiyo, she brushes them off also, seconds before Digitamamon attempts to eat her. It's Justified in this case since Digitamamon is Angoramon's friend, so she had no reason to suspect anything until Digitamamon attacked.
  • Beast and Beauty: Her relationship with Angoramon, most obvious in his berserker form Lamortmon.
  • Berserker Tears: Upon realizing Frozomon possibly killed her friends, Ruli despairingly brings the perpetrator to his knees.
  • Break the Cutie: Suffers from an absolutely egregious case of this in Episode 48, where she becomes the Chamblemon's latest victim. For most of the episode, she's reduced into a wreck only capable of crying and screaming as mushrooms grow all over her body and the Chamblemon basically torture her for food multiple times knowing that the mushrooms on her body empower them. Thankfully, she bounces back by the end of the episode.
  • Butt-Monkey: In a different way from Kiyoshiro, she doesn't become the target of Digimon attacks on the same level as him, but if she does become one, expect her to be hit in an exceptionally gruesome way, as in the sort that would assuredly traumatize any normal person.
  • Compromising Call:
    • Happens to her in episode 15, when Hiro's attempt to get in touch with her and warn her that people are being turned into statues by a hologram ghost alerts that same culprit to her presence in his lair.
    • Receives a Call-Back in Episode 17 when Ruli, remembering this exact thing screwing her over, opts not to call Hiro after an ominous moment of bringing up his contact on her phone and hovering over the call button as the rest of the group hid from Frozomon.
  • Consistent Clothing Style: She is evidently a huge fan of ribbons, and every different outfit she has throughout the series will be adorned with at least a few whether they're on her boots, going down the sleeves, or simply on the front of her blouse. This is in addition to the hair ribbon she always wears -and- the ribbon on her phone's case.
  • Cuddle Bug: She's very huggy and affectionate toward Angoramon, which he's initially somewhat awkward about but gradually he comes to respond in kind.
  • Curiosity Killed the Cast: A recurring Fatal Flaw of hers is that she'll run into trouble with various Digimon, sometimes on purpose, because she just can't refuse the premise of a fun party or she was just seeking the thrills. The Digimon she runs into this way are also often just so dangerous that they simply couldn't be left alone doing their own thing. In one episode she even complains to Angoramon and Espimon that Hiro will stop her from investigating the Kappas in a nearby lake, even if said Kappa is an insane man-eating Digimon.
  • Damsel in Distress: It's not uncommon for her to fall victim to hostile Digimon and end up put out of action for a huge portion of an episode. She only has slightly less of a chance to become an early victim than Kiyoshiro.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Despite her sociability, Ruli has trouble finding anything suitable for her that she's interested in, despite being skilled in most things.
  • Disease Bleach: In Episode 63, after the Quartzmon copy leaves her body and returns to the original, her hair becomes bleach-white due to malnutrition. It returns to normal after Quartzmon undoes the effects.
  • Drives Like Crazy: And rapidly for Go Karts, with Hiro unable to keep up with her while racing.
  • Elegant Classical Musician: She plays the piano, and is the reason Angoramon began following her.
  • Fleeting Passionate Hobbies: She goes through several of these in attempts to find something she wants to stick with, including go-karting and photography. The weapons she wields against a Brainwashed and Crazy Angoramon in episode 23 suggest she also had a golf and street hockey phase.
  • First-Name Basis: She is the first to break the ice in the group, referring to Hiro without honorifics and nicknaming Kiyoshiro shortly after the trio forms. In contrast to Hiro who initially stuck to a more distant Tsukiyono-san before she insisted on just Ruli, and Kiyoshiro who is extremely hung up on propriety and Japanese Politeness.
  • Genki Girl: She is cheerful, energetic, and jumps at the call of adventure.
  • The Gadfly: Within the events of the show itself she takes the dangerous situations the protagonists find themselves in seriously and doesn't tend to pull pranks, but in the post-episode Study File segments she delights in pranking Kiyoshiro or describing gruesome scenarios the week's Digimon might be capable of to his horror.
  • Genre Blindness: Suffers a rather nasty case of this when she receives an invitation from "Aviel" (Vamdemon). Angoramon was already very suspicious about it as soon as Ruli received it, but she seems to be completely gushing with excitement to attend a dessert party that she assured him "she won't be scammed by shady net companies". Even though she was involved with similar deathtraps like Phelesmon's or Archnemon's and thus should have above average knowledge of what his deal is, she doesn't suspect a thing here until she runs into Dracumon and "Aviel" kills him and exposes himself as Vamdemon, a Digimon far from the trio's ability to properly start a fight with. If Angoramon didn't have the keenest sense that something was obviously going amiss and preemptively warned Hiro and Kiyoshiro over it, Ruli would've become Vamdemon's next victim. She then goes for it another time when she grabs a VIP card straight from the circus mascot (actually an Opposummon), which leads to her and Hiro getting involved with a Digimon so dangerous that they had to avoid directly fighting.
  • Geodesic Cast: Subverts it in Episode 17 when she becomes the first of the crew to sync with a Digimon other than her usual partner, taking command of TeslaJellymon to save their partners.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: Although she does plenty of girly stuff with her girlfriends, she loves racing go-karts, though she grabs Hiro and Kiyoshiro for it since boys like that - although she proves to be the most reckless at it.
  • Horror Hunger: Gets hit by this in Episode 63 when she eats one of Quartzmon's parasitic pods by accident. It ended up with her being hospitalized with Mummymon and almost dying until Quartzmon himself decides to undo the damage done.
  • Human Sacrifice: In episode 35, when she visits family out in the countryside, only to discover that her ancestors were once a prominent family in the area tied to a local legend that demands the sacrifice of a Tsukiyono daughter to appease the anger of a werewolf said to terrorize the area.
  • Invisible Parents: Her parents are alluded to in several episodes (and there are circumstances that takes place in her home where they should be intervening), but never actually seen despite plenty of scenes set at her house.
  • Jerkass to One: Downplayed, but she is a little more snippy with Kiyoshiro than anyone else, due to her irritation with his various behaviors such as cowardice and self-importance. She is never outright mean about it though.
  • Kid with the Leash: She's this when it comes to Lamortmon, as he becomes much more aggressive and bloodthirsty in his Perfect form.
  • Keeping Secrets Sucks: A recurring issue for her, at first her being hurt by the knowledge Angoramon is keeping a secret from her, and in a later episode she feels guilty herself over keeping her Digimon partner and her hologram ghost-hunting activities secret from her Muggle Best Friend duo.
  • Knowledge Broker: Has an extensive information-gathering network in the form of her social media followers, and is often the first of the group to learn of rumors of Digimon appearances.
  • Lady and Knight: She's the lady to Angoramon's knight. She's the daughter of a wealthy family that Angoramon swears to protect, initially because he liked her music and later out of genuine friendship. In fact, it's their friendship that allows Angoramon to get stronger and ultimately take on a knightly form.
  • Leader Wannabe: She dubs the group Team Lirurun while helping Yuto with his hologram ghost problem, but gets miffed when Hiro takes the initiative on planning anyway.
  • The Masquerade: The only one of the core group who deals with this since Hiro and Kiyoshiro are somewhat loners who don't socialize too much, while Ruli spends a lot of time with her non-Digimon-related social circle who have already been victims of several hologram ghost incidents, leading Ruli to fear that they would see Angoramon as no different.
  • Meaningful Name: Her given name, "Ruli", means "lapis lazuli" while her surname, "Tsukiyono", means "moonlit night field". Both are possibly a reference to the Moon Rabbit, which is also known as "Jade Hare" or "Gold Hare", fitting due to her Partner, Angoramon, being a green and golden-furred rabbit Digimon.
  • Morality Chain: Angoramon is normally a rational sort who knows when to stop during a battle, but in his more vicious Lamortmon stage she takes this role, having to call him off before he deals a killing blow to some of his opponents.
  • Nerves of Steel: She shows no signs of being traumatized despite experiencing several noticeably grisly Digimon attacks that would otherwise scar a person for life.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Ruli seems to like taking offers to investigate horrific Digimon attacks or search about them on Lirurun, sometimes getting the party into confronting dangerous Digimon. In episode 37, when RareRaremon's zombies pursue the group, Angoramon also tells Hiro that she likes zombie movies and in episode 49 she shows up with some realistic zombie cosplay at the Halloween party. She also retells eerie legends and folktales related to the Digimon of the week at the end of later episodes. However, this does not mean she likes experiencing the horrors herself.
  • Nightmare Fuel Station Attendant: Her role in the Study File segments. Early on, Angoramon is the most common character to deliver the Digimon analysis cutins, but Ruli takes over for her partner in the show's latter half. Contrasting their very different personalities Angoramon is analytical and tends to describe what the Digimon are capable of in practical terms, while Ruli delivers hers more like a ghost story and plays up the grisly details.
  • Phoneaholic Teenager:
    • Downplayed as a more modern example, considering her love of social media, and constant use of her phone to search for mysteries. When Hiro goes camping with his phone lacking a signal, she can't even comprehend why someone would do that.
    • Ends up coming in handy when the group faces Petermon, as the videos she took on her phone remain to remind the group of his existence after he memory wipes them the first time.
  • Plucky Girl: Out of the human trio, she's the most proactive and headstrong.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Her partnership with Angoramon in a nutshell, with his calm and aloof demeanor contrasting her, the social butterfly.
  • Skewed Priorities: When Petermon says she and the others stink of grown-ups, she's upset... because they're still in junior high. This is after they saw Petermon take a girl and the two Hawkmon they were with to Never-Ever Land.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Although her name is pronounced like Ruri, which is a fairly common Japanese name for girls, the official English subs spell it as Ruli, with an L.
  • Town with a Dark Secret: Her bloodline traces back to one of these. The legend passed down in the village her family comes from states that the village once had a werewolf guardian. But one day that werewolf guardian and a maiden of the Tsukiyono family were discovered to have fallen in love. In their attempt to kill the werewolf, the villagers instead mistakenly hit his lover with a stray arrow, leading to a curse upon the village in which the werewolf would take his revenge upon them once every 100 years unless offered a sacrifice of a Tsukiyono. Whether the story is true or not, it is made clear that the village HAS gone through with at least some of these human sacrifices.

    Kiyoshiro Higashimitarai
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/191px_higashimitarai_kiyoshiro.png
Voiced by: Akira Ishida

A 14-year-old and in eighth grade at the beginning of the series, head of the boys' student dormitory at Hazakura Academy. He is a genius who skipped grades and graduated from grad school in the US, but for some reason is now living a student life in Japan. While he normally speaks with a condescending and arrogant attitude, he is actually quite a coward, but once his switch is flipped...?

  • Affectionate Nickname: Has numerous appellations as every member of the core cast bar Angoramon refers to him differently. Hiro calls him "Senpai", Ruli calls him "Higacchi", Gammamon calls him "Kiyo", and Jellymon calls him Darling. Side characters and Angoramon only call him by his surname.
  • Beneath the Mask: If you manage to crack a weak point in Kiyoshiro's bravado, he'll end up showing his lily-livered self.
  • Breaking Old Trends: Kiyoshiro is the first main male character to have a female partner, with the few notable ones that appeared in Hunters being minor/background characters.
  • Butt-Monkey: Kiyoshiro's anxiety was bad enough after Jellymon discovered him and made the poor kid into her personal chew toy. Then he was inducted into the group and it all went downhill from there.
    • In early episodes, if the Monster of the Week Digimon decides to target one of the main characters, you can bet the first they will find is Kiyoshiro. To name some examples, he has been painfully mutated into a plant humanoid, had his face stolen, turned into a doll, and stalked by a Digimon who wanted to become his friend by killing him. Even after Hiro and Ruli start finding themselves routinely targeted by the Digimon of the Week later down the line and he's the only human standing to the end (sometimes even having to bail the two out himself), they target one of his friends but not him, or he's simply Out of Focus because he had to go somewhere else, Kiyoshiro is still the most-frequent victim.
    • Also to note, in Hiro's Study Files segments, he is always scared out of his wits by an anecdote Ruli shares which is related to the Digimon in question... and since none of the protagonist Digimon get a Study File (compared to the encyclopedia bits in Adventure 2020 where the party's new evolutions are featured quite frequently), Kiyoshiro is thus never spared.
  • Cast Full of Crazy: Not specifically him, but unlike Ruli's friends, his seem to be quite...eccentric. There's Emma Hanes who's so gossipy that she's infamous as The Gadfly back in America and her possession by Eyesmon was treated as unsurpising, his senior Ihara who is a hardcore Otaku that complains about being too busy to watch anime as soon as he wakes up, and Meru, a geek who gladly adopts Tonosama Gekomon and Gekomon once their incident was resolved.
  • Cerebro Electro: He's a Teen Genius with computers and has a Digimon with electric powers.
  • Chuunibyou: His wears bandages on his arm to "seal his powers", meaning for style. Jellymon reveals soon after her debut that the main reason why Kiyoshiro moved back to Japan and resumed high school after graduating from university the year prior is because he wanted to experience Japanese middle school life depicted in his favorite anime and manga. To the point, the crew behind Ghost Game has straight up referred to him as a "chuuni".
  • Composite Character: Or Composite Expy, but Kiyoshiro is essentially a hybrid of Jou and Koushiro, being a nervous, finicky upperclassman, but also a prodigy with programming and computers as Koushiro was. His atypical partner relationship with Jellymon also brings their partners to mind, although Jellymon's method of bringing him out of a shell is trollish.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: While he is a nervous, finicky upperclassman just like Jou. Unlike Jou, who tried to take the lead and is focused on studying, Kiyoshiro is forced to go along with the others and does not even need to go to school at all.
  • Cowardly Lion: He is outright terrified of "hologram ghosts", but is willing to swallow his fear to do his job as dorm leader. At his best, Kiyoshiro has no qualms against attacking enemy Digimon and using himself as a meat shield to protect other people.
  • The Cracker: He is a very skilled hacker, able to hack over thousands of devices in order to set up digital talismans in an attempt to ward off the hologram ghost in his room.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Kiyoshiro's brave side, which he refers to as a Limit Break, tends to surface only after Jellymon revives him following an "integer overflow" (read: passing out from fear) - but he'll be back to being sheepish if he loses consciousness again. Being driven to overcome this to protect Yuna, his friends, and his classmates as he feels is his responsibility as Hazukura Academy's dorm leader allows Jellymon to super-evolve into Thetismon, and willing himself into not going into an integer overflow altogether is vital during the buildup to Amphimon's debut.
  • Distressed Dude: He's the most common target when an episode calls for one or two of the gang to be out of commission, and even in cases where he's last man standing Jellymon is the one who's the superpowered digital monster, so she often has to step in to save or protect him.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Cowardly and subservient to Jellymon as he is, Kiyoshiro draws the line when she let several Andiramon in to nearly destroy the whole Hazakura Dormitory by crafting valuable goods. He will also not stand by and watch a little kid cry in terror without doing anything and berates his partner for being harsh with Yuna. Even out of limit break mode, he does his best to put up a brave face for her when she mistakes him for being a character in her favorite anime.
  • Grade Skipper: He's 14 years old and has a Master's degree, so he skipped about 10 grades along the way. He went back to 8th grade because he wanted to be an ordinary Japanese student.
  • Handwraps of Awesome: His right arm is wrapped in bandages, as part of his chuuni delusion. At one point, he's claimed that they were some sort of seal limiting his true power.
  • Honor Before Reason: Kiyoshiro has a habit of being a stickler for rules and often at inappropriate times, like ignoring a distress call from Ruli because the train carriage he was on prohibited loud conversations.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Jellymon reveals the reason he came back to Japan to study in junior high despite having already earned a Master's Degree overseas was due to wanting to live the life of an ordinary Japanese student.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Pompous as he is, Kiyoshiro drops his uppity persona the next time he meets Hiro after Kotaro is taken to the hospital to offer him sincere condolences...and one of his many precautionary talismans.
  • Kidnapped by the Call: He's the only one of the main trio whose Digivice was forced onto him by his Digimon. He tries to return it to Hiro, but the latter instead has him keep it and even teaches him how to use it, resulting in him being Resigned to the Call much to his displeasure.
  • Last Request: In episode 17, he uses what he believes to be his last words as he freezes to death to ask Jellymon to save Ruli.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Higashimitarai is a Japanese surname that combines the words "higashi" (literally "east") and "mitarai" ("purifying water at the entrance of a shrine"). "Higashi" is possibly a reference to the Azure Dragon of the East, fitting the space theme of Hiro Amanokawa and Ruli Tsukiyono's surnames, while the water-related "mitarai" may relate to his Partner, Jellymon, being a jellyfish Digimon.
    • His given name Kiyoshiro combines the kanji for "pure" (清 kiyo) and "director" (司 shi), and the suffix -rō (郎 lit. "nth son"). "Kiyo" might be a reference to the Kiyomizu-dera, which contains an Azure Dragon statue, while "shi" might be a reference to his position as the head of a dormitory.
  • Oh, Crap!: He is outright terrified of Majiramon coming to punish him for indirectly helping Jellymon's hacking of Japan's bank accounts especially since Angoramon told him that he will get impaled by 108 arrows.
  • Properly Paranoid:
    • It turns out that Jellymon has been screwing with Kiyoshiro since the start of the series at minimum, doing stunts like throwing around his belongings like a poltergeist to study his reactions.
    • While he's prone to freaking out over things non-consequential to the case at hand, in Episode 26 he freaks out over a report that Angoramon's friend was in a house rumored as the "man-eating mansion". Angoramon's friend turns out to be a man-eating Digitamamon.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Even though he's usually tolerant of Jellymon's antics, even he snapped when he finds out she was the one who built the Reward Elf site for the Andiramon to nearly destroy his dorm by draining its life energy to create expensive goods. It takes a lot for him to be absolutely furious and right in front of Jellymon at that.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Kiyoshiro takes pride in being the student dorm leader of his school, and will use it as fuel in battle if he's cornered.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: In Episode 43, one of his former acquaintances, Emma Hanes, arrived in Japan and starts nagging him for dates. He's scared about her knowing about Gammamon and Jellymon because of his past experience with her. There's something suspicious about this, but it's not because of reasons he fears. Emma was attacked and possessed by an Eyesmon at the airport which was influencing her to try and seek out any secrets she can.
  • Sanity Slippage: Jellymon has been taking so much of a toll on Kiyoshiro's wellbeing that he eventually resorted to not only hacking the near entirety of Hazakura's students' phones to set up digital talismans but went and did it to over a thousand devices throughout the campus' vicinity and a significant portion of Kanto.
  • Serious Business: He takes his job as dorm leader very seriously, which is how Hiro motivates him to stay and delete the digital talismans and why he's noticeably pissed off when he found out Jellymon was behind the Andiramon who virtually destroyed his dorm.
  • Split Personality: Downplayed. Whenever Kiyoshiro gets too afraid or worked up, he mutters "Integer Overflow" and nearly passes out. Upon regaining his bearings, he declares "Limit Break", and becomes a lot more confident and serious until the situation has calmed down enough. It's unclear why this happens to him but tends to not remember what he did while it occurs. A prime example is when defending Yuna from the Kodokugumon. Before he passed out, he was his typical Cowardly Lion self and shivering like a leaf. After being shocked back awake by Jellymon, he quickly takes charge of the situation, scoops Yuna up, and even uses himself as a human shield to make sure Yuna doesn't get infected with poison. After entering a Digital Field however, he trips and falls flat on his face, reverting him to normal and leaving him confused as to what happened.
  • Teen Genius: Though he is only 14 years old, Kiyoshiro has a graduate degree from a university in America and helped design a geothermal power plant. Somehow, he's still attending middle school in Japan, which is called out in his character profile. Jellymon explains he's largely attending school because he wants to act his age and be an Ordinary High-School Student. Ironically, because he already graduates from university, he ends up not having to attend school, and is often seen doing this, usually because he has to take care of Gammamon while Hiro is at school.

Digimon

    Gammamon

Gammamon
BetelGammamon
KausGammamon
WezenGammamon
Canoweissmon
Siriusmon

Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro
Attribute: Virus (Gammamon), Vaccine (BetelGammamon, Canoweissmon, Siriusmon), Data (KausGammamon, WezenGammamon)
Attacks: Break Claw, Horn Attack (Gammamon), Solshot, Solblow (BetelGammamon), Urda Impulse, Lamberta Kick (KausGammamon), Sedna, Albion (WezenGammamon), Dragonia, Gallia Fissure, Meteor Lux, Gran Nova (Canoweissmon), Photon Blaster, Cosmo Blade, Break-Quasar, Planet Knuckle (Siriusmon)

A Digimon who came to Hiro through his father, Hokuto. He is very curious and tends to try and bite everything. He is mischievous but listens to his friends. His favorite food is chocolate, which he calls "champion".

His Evolutions are as follows:

  • Baby: Curimon
  • Baby II: Gurimon
  • Child: Gammamon, his default form. A white triceratops with a scarf.
  • Adult:
    • BetelGammamon, a tall, red, humanoid dinosaur with fire abilities and ceratopsian features.
    • KausGammamon, a blue humanoid dinosaur with gliding membranes and armored jets that allow it to fly.
    • WezenGammamon, a green triceratops with cannons for horns.
  • Perfect: Canoweissmon, a large-winged white dragon that wields burning lights.
  • Ultimate: Siriusmon, a futuristic-looking dragon warrior that dual-wields gun-swords.
  • Ultimate (Jogress, Vital Bracelet BE only): Proximamon, a quadrupedal dragon Digimon with a humanoid body, wielding a large axe. It is a Jogress of Siriusmon and Arcturusmon that can easily reformat entire worlds by destroying and recreating them.

  • All Your Powers Combined: Canoweissmon properly combines all of his previous form's features, further represented by the red, blue and green streams of light in his evolution sequences converging into actual white.
  • Arm Cannon: Siriusmon has a pair of cannons in place of hands.
  • Armed Legs: WezenGammamon has guns built into his legs and can fire them even when flipped over.
  • BFG:
  • BFS: Siriusmon's Arm Cannons can fold out into a pair of swords as long as his entire arm.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: Siriusmon's Arm Cannons can each fold out a blade to turn into a BFS.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Gammamon is a silly, childlike Digimon who just wants to eat and play with his "brother" Hiro. Throwing him around in a brutal beatdown makes Gammamon rage-filled by the second, and if you outright push him past his Rage Breaking Point, GulusGammamon just possesses him to barge out and he will show you no mercy. He proves this to his evil-side, by opening his mouth to send forth all the ghosts of his evolutions to drag in and consume The Jet-Black Champion who is freaking out at the sight. Push the sweet Digimon far enough, and he will swallow your soul.
  • Big Brother Worship: He adores Hiro and is Easily Impressed by everything his human partner can do.
  • Big Eater: Gammamon is a tad smaller than the majority of Child Digimon, yet manages to have an appetite that rivals that of Adventure's Agumon and Tamers' Guilmon.
  • Black Eyes of Evil: Whenever GulusGammamon takes over, Gammamon's eyeballs turn completely black, with the evolution usually preceeded by a Nightmare Face, agonizing scream or both.
  • Break the Cutie:
    • Gammamon is explicitly the youngest of the partner trio, and his youthful innocence contrasts greatly against Angoramon and Jellymon, who act much more mature than what would be expected of a Child Digimon. When Sealsdramon kills Bokomon as a result of pushing his target out of the way, he's barely able to understand what happened at first and tries to grab the motes of his corpse... bringing him immense despair that immediately pushes him beyond his limits in conjunction with Hiro's Digivice powering up and results in Gammamon completely losing his shit and GulusGammamon barging out just before Sealsdramon can take him out.
    • There are several cases unrelated to GulusGammamon where he gets this over fallouts with Hiro. Once when a Betsumon impersonates him and he suffers from an identity crisis because nobody recognizes him anymore, and the other time when he refuses to apologize for breaking Hiro's tablet and goes into a fallout with him for most of episode 40 until Calamaramon starts wreaking havoc in earnest.
  • Breaking Old Trends:
    • Gammamon is the first Virus-Attribute Digimon to be partnered with a DigiDestined leader since Guilmon in Tamers.
    • While there have been instances of Partner Digimon having different Evolution forms in the past, he's the first to have four different Adult Evolutions note.
    • Unlike other Partner Digimon who retain their attribute throughout their regular evolution line, his evolutions can also change his attribute with BetelGammamon and Canoweissmon changing him into a Vaccine-Attribute and KausGammamon & WezenGammamon changing him into a Data-Attribute Digimon.
    • Canoweissmon is the first Perfect evolution of a main protagonist's Digimon Partner from the anime that is not a cyborg or armored version of its Adult evolution.
    • He's also the first Partner Digimon who doesn't directly Dark Evolve when the situation forces him to. Instead, another Digimon comes out from his body and takes over the fight.
  • Buffy Speak: Gammamon sometimes uses nicknames for concepts, people and more commonly food - salmon skin (and fish in general) are shiny/shinies, spicy is scary or explosive, chocolate is champion, and dying is "going on a journey". In the finale, the use of proper names is what tips Hiro off that Regulusmon is impersonating him within his mental world.
  • Cape Wings: Like GulusGammamon, Siriusmon has a cape that can transition into draconic wings.
  • Catchphrase: Two of them: "You give me bad vibes!" and "I'll make you go / I'm about to go kaboom!"
  • Children Are Innocent: Like Guilmon before him, he is rather childish, and much less informed than Angoramon for example. When he seemingly evolves into GulusGammamon and they learn how brutal he can be, the team is absolutely horrified and are barely able to consider him the same person in that form.
  • Color Motif: Gammamon is a white triceratops and its evolutions are based on the additive primary colors. They are also named for stars of those colors, or as close as possible in the case of WezenGammamon.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Gammamon was nowhere as small and innocent in the past as he is today. Piccolomon tried to erase him from existence by going back in time - only to reappear in the present beaten up beyond what any of the Digimon trio were capable of, gasping "What are you!?". It's implied that Piccolomon actually ran into Regulusmon, a terrifying Draconic Abomination who unleashes world-wiping Digital Hazards just by walking around, and not the child-like Gammamon he was expecting.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: A Virus-Attribute, usually associated with villains, but he is a protagonist Digimon like Guilmon and Wormmon. While he seemingly has a Dark Evolution, it's actually just something else barging out from him whenever he likes to.
  • Desperation Attack: Most of Siriusmon's attacks are focused around his his dual Arm Cannon/Blade Below the Shoulder weapons. The only attack that seems to be an exception is Planet Knuckle, which he only uses in the final battle after his weapons are destroyed, and was capable of punching the Regulusmon out of the Jet-Black Conqueror.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: He defeats the world-ending Regulusmon in single combat. For bonus points, the fight ends with Siriusmon literally punching Regulusmon so hard he reverts to GulusGammamon
  • Dinosaurs Are Dragons: Three of Gammamon's evolutions are Dragon Man Digimon that have ceratopsian features. They can also evolve from the Funny Animal triceratops Gammamon and evolve into the fully draconic Canoweissmon.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Has a Trademark Favorite Food in chocolate, but its counterpoint is spicy food which he cannot stand and deems 'Scary'. When the Digimon are put under mind control by Morphomon, Hiro is actually able to break its hold on him by stuffing every spicy substance within arm's reach into Gammamon's mouth.
  • Draconic Humanoid: BetelGammamon and KausGammamon are this by way of Dinosaurs Are Dragons, putting ceratopsian features on a humanoid body. Canoweissmon instead has a design that doubles down on both the draconic and humanoid aspects of this trope, resulting in a very similar build to Arresterdramon.
  • EX Special Attack: One of Siriusmon's strongest moves, Break-Quasar, is essentially a souped-up version of the very first attack he ever used as Gammamon, Breakclaw.
  • Expy: He could be seen as one to Guilmon from Tamers. Both are Virus-Attribute dinosaur Digimon who are partnered with the main hero and both are Big Eaters. They both have playful and simple-minded personalities, and a similar tendency to become aggressive and wild in the heat of battle. Also, both have a dangerous Superpowered Evil Side brought about from the death of an ally, Leomon for Guilmon and Bokomon for Gammamon, though in Gammamon's case, his "Superpowered Evil Side" is actually a different Digimon inhabiting his body. The Perfect evolution of said Digimon is also often compared to Megidramon, Guilmon's Dark Evolution.
  • Flight: Gammamon can fly with the tiny collapsible wings in his back, but his flight speed is rather low to the point regular birds can out-speed him. In the other hand, Canoweissmon and Sirirusmon are capable of more dynamic maneuvers with their larger wings.
  • Flipping Helpless: Downplayed. Being a triceratops, WezenGammamon can't move when flipped over. He can still fire the guns in his legs, though.
  • Foe-Tossing Charge: Urda Impulse is an aerial version, with KausGammamon using his jets to ram a foe repeatedly. It's strong enough to knock Yatagaramon to the ground.
  • Friendless Background: In the finale, Hokuto confirms that when he first met Gammamon he was a violent but weak Digimon who'd never been able to make friends. Hokuto taking pity on him changed his personality for the better.
  • Future Badass: Unable to erase his monstrous form in the past, the thrashed Piccolomon instead time-travels in the future to try to understand what kind of entity Gammamon is - only to return happily singing his praises, even wanting to befriend him! Telling the dinosaur Digimon "You are amazing!" heavily implies he will be a powerful, if not omnipresent, force for good in the future.
  • Happily Adopted: Hokuto treats Gammamon like his own son and asks Hiro to take care of his new little brother in the recording that plays upon the Digivice-V- being activated for the first time.
  • Light 'em Up: The entire family is associated with the additive color system in their designs, evolution sequences, and the Adults being named after stars, but Canoweissmon and Siriusmon's attacks are actually made of light.
  • Long-Range Fighter: As WezenGammamon, all of his named attacks involve some form of artillery fire. Downplayed in that he's still a heavily armored dinosaur that can hold his own in close quarters.
  • Loss of Identity: Gammamon almost suffers this until Meicoomon appears and tells him about his experience with Betsumon stealing his identity before he disappears.
  • Malaproper: Due to his child-like personality, Gammamon often mixes up words. For example, he says "turkey or treatment" instead of "trick or treat" and he calls ketchup "ketchu". Most frequently however, he calls chocolate (choco) "champion" (saikyo).
  • Mix-and-Match Weapon: Siriusmon's Sylvias are a pair of massive arm blades with hidden guns built into them.
  • Multiform Balance: Each of Gammamon's Adult forms has distinct strengths and weaknesses.
    • BetelGammamon is a fairly balanced fighter whose fire abilities can be used for both close- and long-ranged attacks but tends to be Weak, but Skilled and outclassed by most of his opponents.
    • KausGammamon is a speedy aerial specialist who excels in hit-and-run tactics, but requires a lot of open space to fight at his best and can struggle if he tries to glide against the wind. He's also the only Adult form on the team who lacks a ranged attack.
    • WezenGammamon is similar to a tank, being far bulkier than the others and focused on powerful, long-range artillery - although those attacks can take a while to charge and the evolution apparently has some effect on Gammamon's mind, being willing to kill an opponent despite Hiro's hesitation.
  • Never Say "Die": Subverted and justified - Gammamon was too young to fully comprehend the concept of death after Bokomon's murder and had to be told by Hiro and Angoramon that they "went on a journey", which later ends up in his vocabulary once he does understand what death is.
  • No Mouth: Subverted with Siriusmon: he appears to just have a face plate instead of a mouth, but in episode 67 he reveals he does have a mouth filled with razor-sharp teeth.
  • Not Quite Flight: KausGammamon can fight in the skies by gliding with the membranes between his arms and torso and jet ports on his knees. Conveniently, he can also extend a pair of handles on his back for passengers to grab onto.
  • Older Than They Look: Gammamon's body was originally Regulusmon's before somehow being reduced to his current state and having a split personality becoming the dominant one, through reincarnation or otherwise. Piccolomon's attempt to Ret-Gone him results in the Perfect Digimon warping back to the group's current time period beaten to a pulp and absolutely terrified of his past self, something that Regulusmon himself confirms in Episode 66.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Gammamon is an adorable Digimon of child-like innocence, something that is acknowledged In-Universe. So when he starts making deranged expressions with his eyes becoming pitch-black, you know something horrible is happening or is going to happen.
  • Playing with Fire: BetelGammamon's claws are bathed in flames and he can shoot fireballs from them with Solshot.
  • Power Incontinence: Unlike his peers, Gammamon has the potential to Digivolve into multiple forms, all of which have different skill sets which allow him to theoretically adapt to most situations. However, it is shown Hiro has little control over what form Gammamon takes, making this something of a gamble. Averted as of Episode 20, however, as Gammamon's desire to protect Hiro proves vital in learning to shift the various forms at will.
  • Protagonist Power-Up Privileges: Downplayed, as while Gammamon has four Adult level forms debut before Angoramon even unlocks his, each form has strengths and weaknesses, and the fourth is not even one of his forms but an independent Digimon.
  • Red Is Heroic: BetelGammamon's body is primarily red and is the only Vaccine-Attribute amongst Gammamon's Adult evolutions.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Overlaps with Big Little Brother towards Hiro. The Digimon's childlike wonder, his mannerisms, and endless curiosity, are just adorable to witness.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: He is furious after Sealsdramon murders Bokomon, and pretty much lets GulusGammamon barge out to viciously choke Sealsdramon in his place before finishing him off with a stinger through the head.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: BetelGammamon and KausGammamon both don a bright blue one, matching Gammamon's usual blue bandana. Downplayed in the winter where he wears a yellow and orange scarf in his Child form, though he doesn't do much battling in that form before evolving to another form. Averted entirely by Canoweissmon who is the first of Gammamon's evolutions to not incorporate any articles of fashion into his form.
  • Stellar Name: His evolved forms are all named after stars from constellations. This might be because GulusGammamon is an alien...maybe.
    • BetelGammamon is named for Betelgeuse, a red supergiant in Orion.
    • KausGammamon is named for Kaus Australis, a blue-white giant in Sagittarius.
    • WezenGammamon is named for Wezen, a yellow-white star in Canis Major, yellow-white being the closest a star can get to being green.
    • Canoweissmon takes part of its name from Canopus, the second brightest star and a part of the constellation Carina.
    • Siriusmon is named for the binary star Sirius from the Canis Major constellation, the brightest star in the night sky.
  • Technopath: Gammamon has twice demonstrated an ability to unlock digital locks subconsciously. The first time is in the second episode, "The Mystery of the Museum", and the second time is in Episode 10.
  • Temper-Ceratops: Although normally sweet-natured, he has a violent nature in combat, fitting with his Virus nature.
  • Through His Stomach: Recounting the foods he ate together with Hiro as he struggles to save him from Mummymon and declaring that he wants to eat more chocolate with him ends up being enough of a reaffirmation of their bond to triggering Gammamon's first evolution.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: GulusGammamon isn't the alternate personality - Gammamon is. While it's unknown how or when he emerged and became the dominant one, he lacked just enough control for GulusGammamon to start the GRB infection before leaving the Digital World.
  • Torso with a View: In Episode 66, Regulusmon manages to inflict a potentially lethal injury on Siriusmon by baiting him to try attacking him, then using Genierce to blow a massive hole on his chest.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Chocolate. He calls it "Champion" and his mouth waters the time he sees a chocolate snack. Hiro also has a large stack of a specific brand of chocolate snack used to feed him.
  • Tron Lines: Siriusmon has red lines over his body constantly glowing with energy.
  • Unpredictable Results: Gammamon's evolutions are more or less random at first, which clashes with Hiro's attempts to strategize. He doesn't learn to choose between adult forms until episode 20.
  • Visual Pun: His evolution sequences depict gamma ray bursts.
  • Wave-Motion Gun:
    • WezenGammamon's Albion attack fires a beam that, when fully charged, can destroy a satellite in orbit. Notably, it's actually powerful enough to damage Regulusmon.
    • Siriusmon's Quasar Break sees him fire a massive energy blast from one of the Sylvia cannons, then empower it further with a massive Sword Beam.
  • The Worf Barrage: While he does manage to free Hiro, BetelGammamon's attack on Mummymon in his debut has absolutely no effect, instead the evolution itself surprises Mummymon enough and distracts him from his one-track mind long enough that Hiro is able to get through to him. Overall, BetelGammamon is subjected to this quite often, usually getting beaten around to make way for another tamer and partner duo to shine.
  • World-Healing Wave: After devouring Gulusgammamon within their inner world, he has him agree to a set of undisclosed rules, and undoes the GRB corruption plaguing the Digimon World with a cure created by his dark counterpart.
  • Wrecked Weapon: All of Siriusmon's weapons end up being destroyed during his battle with Regulusmon...so he just punches him really hard.

    Angoramon

Angoramon
SymbareAngoramon
Lamortmon
Diarbbitmon

Voiced by: Kazuya Nakai
Attribute: Vaccine
Attacks: Double Lariat, Pyon Dump, Petit Tornado (Angoramon), Ländlizer, Breakin' Stream, Jive (SymbareAngoramon), Kaisaisō, Kōhabattō, Fūga Rekkanjin, Gōon Kieizan (Lamortmon), Trusgain, Buck Strash, Buidhe-Dearg (Diarbbitmon)

A large Digimon who uses his long ears to fly slowly in the sky. He has a keen sense of hearing and can distinguish distant noises. He is always calm and has a mature personality. He knows a lot about the Digital World. He likes to listen to Ruli play the piano.

His Evolutions are as follows:

  • Baby: Pyonmon
  • Baby II: Bosamon
  • Child: Angoramon, his default form. A plump, fluffy rabbit man that can use his ears to fly.
  • Adult: SymbareAngoramon, a tall, thin martial artist that resembles a rabbit with bladed ears.
  • Perfect: Lamortmon, a dual-wielding berserker with bat-like features and a muscular frame under all the fluff.
  • Ultimate: Diarbbitmon, a humanlike dashing prince who dual-wields rapiers with lightning speed.

  • Accidental Murder: Attempts to yank the Shiratorimaru out of Hanumon's grasp, not knowing that doing so kills the sword's current host until it was too late.
  • Advertised Extra: While not to the same degree as Amphimon, Darbittmon doesn't do much beyond his debut, and is completely powerless in the final battles. Part of the reason why this happens is because Ruli spends a large portion of said final battles have Ruli being put on the victim seat.
  • Acrofatic: Subverted. He looks fat, but most of his girth is actually his fur. He's actually thin enough underneath it that Ruli can wrap her arms all the way around his torso when hugging him. He can still use all that fluff to bounce, though.
  • Adventurer Archaeologist: The glimpse we're given into his past in the digital world shows that he and his partner Digitamamon researched the history of the digital world in this fashion, exploring old ruins and occasionally running afoul of Digimon squatting in them.
  • Ascended Fanboy: Although he's a historical researcher first and foremost, he also enjoys treating himself to fictional stories; particularly those starring heroic swordsmen. The first of his forms to pick up swordplay, Lamortmon, is more animalistic and monstrous but his final evolution is evocative of exactly the sort of noble warrior he admired.
  • Ass Kicks You: His second attack in rookie form is a classic Butt Stomp.
  • Ax-Crazy: As Lamortmon he loses most of his composure and self-control until he's snapped out of his frenzy by outside interference. His eyes can even be seen misting over in red during his first appearance.
  • Badass Bookworm: He can often be seen reading during downtime scenes. According to episode 19, at least one of the genres he goes for is historical fiction and he shows a fascination with old books in episode 26.
  • Beast and Beauty: His feelings for his human partner Ruli are unsubtly implied to be romantic, with episode 35 (Lamortmon's debut) even comparing him to the legend of a werewolf said to have fallen in love with one of Ruli's ancestors. His evolution line (particularly the savage Lamortmon becoming the refined Diarbbitmon) is evocative of Beauty and the Beast, with his final form also referencing a mythical Star Crossed Lover knight.
  • The Berserker: Lamortmon is a feral and ferocious fighter that does not stop until he's downed his enemies. Unlike actual dark evolutions, however, he still has enough self-control to back down with outside prompting. The Perfect-level Digimon only cares about one thing and one thing only - protecting his beloved partner, Ruli. He was about to beat a defeated Manticoremon into deletion in Episode 35 all to protect her until she realized this and called him off.
  • Blow You Away: He whips up a whirlwind with his ears for his Petit Tornado attack.
    • As SymbareAngoramon, he has an advanced version of this that he shoot from his hands, called Breaking Stream.
  • Bishōnen Line: Zig-zagged. When evolving from Child to Adult he goes from a plump, fluffy rabbit-man to a more thin and muscular humanoid martial artist, while still retaining the rabbit theme. Then his Perfect stage turns him into a hulking, borderline-feral berserker. And finally, his Ultimate turns him into a Little Bit Beastly man dressed like a dashing prince.
  • Bizarre Alien Biology: His round appearance would lead one to believe he's fat, but when he's doused with water he's revealed to be mostly fluff and the body underneath is rail-thin much like he is as SymbareAngoramon. But while his fur is dry his body acts just as large and heavy as it appears: he can get stuck in small spaces, others can cling to his belly as if it were solid and the ground quakes with his every step.
  • Breaking Old Trends: For most of the show's run the established pattern of evolution debuts has Angoramon be the last of the group to evolve, with a long stretch of episodes between him and Gammamon who is always first to reach a new stage. As the group starts hitting the Ultimate stage however the pattern is broken as he is second this time and only two episodes after Siriusmon's first appearance.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: The most close-combat oriented of the main three mons, but also the most soft-spoken and laid-back one who simply enjoys peaceful activities like listening to his partner play piano or reading.
  • Casting Gag: For the second time, Kazuya Nakai plays the role of a strong silent type Digimon with martial arts and wind abilities who is deeply devoted with romantic undertones to his partner. Taken further by his Ultimate stage, as Diarbbitmon and MirageGaogamon make up 2 of the 3 existing Digimon classified as Beast Knight types.
  • Dance Battler: Subverted. While SymbareAngoramon is quite graceful and his attack names are all dance-themed, none of his attacks include actual dance moves.
  • Declaration of Protection:
    • He gives Ruli one of these once she's able to see him, swearing that he will protect her, and thus she can trust him. All she needs to do is materialize him.
    • When he becomes Lamortmon, his speech consists solely of "Protect Ruli/everyone".
  • Defrosting Ice King: Originally very closed off and emotionally detached. But throughout the course of the series, Ruli's Cuddle Bug nature rubs off on him and he opens up more and more as he grows from simply passively allowing Ruli to hug him to actively returning and initiating his own. He also becomes more comfortable expressing his interests, at one point theatrically acting out scenes of his books to an amused Ruli.
  • Doppelgänger Attack: His Back Strash has him create several afterimages that each attack before disappearing.
  • Dual Wielding: Lamortmon has two big swords, but wields them more like clubs than blades most of the time. As Diarbbitmon he switches them for more elegant rapiers.
  • Expy: Angoramon can be seen as Ghost Game's equivalent to Renamon. Both are mammalian Digimon with yellow fur who are larger and more mature than the average Rookie.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: In his child and baby forms, when he's at his fluffiest. If you can see his eyes in those forms, either something has gone badly wrong or something really bad is about to happen.
  • Fanboy: A big fan of Ruli and her piano playing, which is why he initially started following her around to protect her.
  • Foreshadowing: Various events in the show later make their way into his evolutionary path:
    • His passion for fictional swordsmen and their exploits he likes to read about seem to inspire his later forms picking up swordplay rather than the hand-to-hand martial arts of his early stages.
    • He dual-wields bamboo sticks against Reppamon, mirroring the fighting style he will later employ as Lamortmon and Diarbbitmon.
    • In his battle against Musyamon Zubamon lends him his aid by transforming into a sword for Symbareangoramon to wield against his katana.
    • When battling Skullgreymon in Pilomon's dream world, his use of lucid dreaming to combat it led to him creating an army of copies of himself to attack all at once, possibly the inspiration for his similar attack as Diarbbitmon.
  • Gaining the Will to Kill: Realizing his friend Digitamamon is too far gone in consuming humans to even leave alive, he kills him and thus commits the heroes' first kill, bar those comitted by GulusGammamon.
  • Gentle Giant: The largest of the three main Digimon by far (even taller than the others' Adult forms), but also the nicest and most easy-going, wanting to save Ruli from Dracumon simply because he enjoyed her piano playing.
  • Genius Bruiser: When it comes to knowledge about Digimon or pure muscle, Angoramon's your guy. In most cases, he delivers the Digimon Analyzer cut-ins. Episode 26 reveals he used to do research with Digitamamon back in the Digital World.
  • Guile Hero: He uses his wits to outsmart opponents when he's outgunned, such as his ploy to use Asuramon's face stealing power against him, or fooling Oleamon into freeing him from her mark by claiming that if not for it, he could show her an even better method to prepare her food.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: SymbareAngoramon dons pants, boots, and a pair of gloves upon evolution, but lacks a shirt. Granted, much of his chest is covered by a mass of fluff.
  • Hand Blast: SymbareAngoramon's Breakin' Stream is a whirlwind emitted continuously from his hands.
  • Heli-Critter: Able to fly using his ears as rotors.
  • Heroic Willpower: Exhibits the strongest willpower among the Digimon trio when they're all put under Morphomon's control; Angoramon's the only one to retain enough presence of mind to warn Ruli to run and multiple times restrains himself from attacking her or outright runs away instead.
    • Gets this pushed to his limits later in episode 31, when possessed by a cursed sword that compels its user to attack humans and other Digimon. While others are shown immediately falling under its control, Angoramon fights it and secludes himself to avoid endangering anyone for two full days and nights before he's worn down.
  • Hulk Speak: Normally he's soft-spoken and polite, or eloquently composing haiku. But his speech devolves into this in his Lamortmon stage as he becomes much more single-minded and brutish.
  • Humanity Is Infectious: Several Digimon have asked him if he's really a Digimon or if his experiences with Ruli have made him "human" instead. His evolution line plays on this as both times he's asked they've seen him Digivolve from a conventionally beastly Digimon into one distinctly more human-like.
  • Hurricane of Aphorisms: Once he joins the cast, nearly every episode from that point on ends with him reciting a haiku based on the situation. Except in Episode 26 — and it's justified considering he is forced to kill his old friend and left everyone else in dead silence. He also doesn't recite a poem during other episodes where he's too shocked to say anything or simply absent.
  • Improvised Weapon: A big fan of the tactic when in his base form. He has used various environmental objects to gain an advantage against higher level opponents, including bamboo sticks used as dual swords, bags of concrete, and a forklift.
  • Intimate Healing: Done in a non-romantic form in episode 17, as Hiro and Kiyoshiro begin to succumb to the cold in a rapidly freezing room, he cuddles them both into his fur for warmth.
  • Intrigued by Humanity: Accused by Digitamamon of this, claiming Angoramon has lost touch with his Digimon side and fallen in too much with humans, to the point he'd betray an old friend in favor of a species he isn't even part of.
  • Kill the Ones You Love: To his former adventuring partner Digitamamon.
  • Lady and Knight: He's the knight to Ruli's lady, initially swearing to protect Ruli because he liked her music and continuing to do so out of genuine friendship. In fact, it's their friendship that allows him to get stronger and ultimately take on a knightly form. Lamortmon notwithstanding, he's also the most courageous and strong-willed without being reckless.
  • Light Is Good: He's a heroic Vaccine-type with yellow fur.
  • Lightning Bruiser:
    • After bonding with Ruli, he's much faster than he was before while keeping all his strength.
    • Taken up a few notches with Diarbbitmon, who is not only extremely strong but blindingly fast.
  • Little Bit Beastly: His Ultimate form, Diarbbitmon, resembles a dark-skinned, blond man with a rabbit tail and shoulder-length shaggy hair. His clothing and mask make it difficult to tell if he has any other beastlike features.
  • Me's a Crowd: While in Pillomon's nightmare, after Kyoshiro realizes they can use the area's nature as a lucid dream to their advantage, SymbareAngoramon dreams up multiple copies of himself to outnumber the single SkullGreymon threatening the team.
  • Mercy Kill: To his former friend Digitamamon, after he had been driven insane by starvation in the human world and turned to eat the spirits of humans as his only form of sustenance. He could no longer reconcile this way of living with Angoramon, who had formed emotional bonds and affection towards humans.
  • Mighty Glacier: Although strong, he can't catch Dracumon. Being bonded to Ruli upgrades him to a Lightning Bruiser that manhandles Dracumon.
  • Mr. Exposition: With his knowledge of the Digital World, he fills in the other characters on what the enemy Digimon's traits and powers are.
  • Mysterious Protector: At first for Ruli, trying to save her from Dracumon because he likes her piano playing.
  • Natural Weapon: The tips of SymbareAngoramon's ears are blades sharp enough to cut through a Jyureimon's vines.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Lamortmon's preferred strategy in a fight is to either maul enemies or pummel them with his swords until they're down.
  • No Social Skills: Contrasting his outgoing and sociable partner, and the trouble they have with communicating with each other regarding certain topics has occasionally posed a major issue in several episodes. Sometime later, Angoramon winds up going MIA for nearly two whole days - but by then he's opened up enough for the whole group to understand that this sort of absence is not normal for him.
  • Poor Communication Kills: The primary conflict between him and Ruli in episode 11; when he starts going out to spend time with his Digimon friends, but their gathering spot is supposed to be kept a secret from humans. Angoramon declining to tell Ruli where he's going or why causes friction in their partnership, as Ruli is very much a social butterfly who is used to sharing things and sees him keeping secrets from her as a sign of distrust.
  • Power Makes Your Voice Deep: His voice as Angoramon and Symbare is more soft and breathy, while as Lamortmon his speech usually comes out in a snarling tone, but in his final most powerful form his voice lowers to a deep baritone.
  • Properly Paranoid: He's extremely aware of when something is going to lead the gang into confronting dangerous Digimon, best seen in the case of Phelesmon and Vamdemon, especially the latter where he's instantly able to sense something shady going on just by hearing Ruli talk about it.
  • The Quiet One: He doesn't talk much and is pretty laconic when he does - even his evolution shouts are the most nuanced of the trio's.
  • The Worf Effect: Just like the rest of the partner Ultimates, he gets outright defeated by Bloomlordmon.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: SymbareAngoramon's Jive is a variation of this consisting of a very rapid barrage of kicks.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Diarbbitmon is a combination of "rabbit" and the mythical Irish hero Diarmuid Ua Duibhne, a Dual Wielding knight most famous for being cursed with a "love spot" on his body that dragged him into a tragic affair with his lord's wife.
  • Righteous Rabbit: He's designed after a rabbit and is the most thoughtful and moral of the heroes.
  • Royal Rapier: His final form Diarbbitmon, who embodies The Beast becoming a handsome prince, wields a pair of these.
  • Sigil Spam: As SymbareAngoramon, he has a green rabbit symbol on each of his ear-blades. As Diarbbitmon, his weapons and armor are emblazoned with the same symbol in multiple places in various colors. He also has a teacup with a yellow version of the symbol.
  • Single-Stroke Battle: How SymbareAngoramon ultimately takes down Digitamamon, using his bladed ears to slice through a broken section of his shell that Canoweissmon had previously weakened.
    • Happens again when he works together with Zubamon to fight Musyamon, utilizing the former in sword form to shatter the latter's katana to defeat him.
  • Stalker with a Crush: It's not like he could have revealed himself even if he wanted to, but he was following Ruli around and watching her through the window of her home because he was a fan of hers. Just before materializing him, Ruli tells him that if he likes her music so much then he should stop hiding when he listens to her play.
  • Speed Echoes: Diarbbitmon can move so fast that the only indication he's moved is the afterimages he leaves behind.
  • Spot the Impostor: Attempted by shadow doppelgängers of Ruli and Hiro, but the trope is averted as Angoramon and Gammamon immediately recognize their true partners.
  • Strong and Skilled: Diarbbitmon is as powerful as one would expect from a Mega but extremely skilled with his swords.
  • Sword Beam: Lamortmon's Fūga Rekkanjin is a barrage of sharp energy arcs projected from his swords.
  • Unusual Weapon Mounting: SymbareAngoramon's ears end in blades.
  • Warrior Poet: He ends almost every episode with a poem ruminating on the group's latest encounter.
  • Wrestler in All of Us: His attacks as Angoramon are based on wrestling moves such as lariats.

    Jellymon

Jellymon
TeslaJellymon
Thetismon
Amphimon

Voiced by: Yu Shimamura
Attribute: Data
Attacks: Bibi Thunder, Bolt Knuckle, Spiral Kick (Jellymon), Physalist, Punischöne, Volsprite (TeslaJellymon), Adieu World, Doctease, Hammer Thunder, Biri Smasher (Thetismon), Umbre-Defender, Aqua Zamber, Raibang Break, Crystal Freezer (Amphimon)

A soft-bodied Digimon with a jellyfish-like head. She can easily slip through the ground and walls. She is strong-willed like a queen and hates to lose. She finds human activities amusing and tries to participate in them as if they were a game. She likes to scare Kiyoshiro.

Her Evolutions are as follows:

  • Baby: Puyomon
  • Baby II: Puyoyomon
  • Child: Jellymon, her default form. A girl with a blue jellyfish for a head.
  • Adult: TeslaJellymon, a taller Jellymon with more tentacles, as well as hands and legs more suitable for close combat.
  • Perfect: Thetismon, a Digimon that more resembles a grown woman in a costume than it does a jellyfish and is a master of manipulating poisons and antidotes alike.
  • Ultimate: Amphimon, a cybernetic deep-sea diver with deployable drones to support her allies and hinder her foes.

  • Advertised Extra: Beyond her debut, Amphimon does very little of note, with the exception of defeating Quartzmon.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Ever since Kiyoshiro proves himself by standing up against Majiramon despite his cowardice, she calls him "Darling". It's not until they're on the verge of being slain by Kinkakumon and Ginkakumon that she refers to him by his full name.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: While in Pillomon's nightmare, after Kyoshiro realizes they can use the area's nature as a lucid dream to their advantage, TeslaJellymon dreams up herself to a gargantuan size. Her fist alone is as big as the already huge SkullGreymon the team are fighting.
  • The Call Knows Where You Live: Gammamon and Angoramon didn't actively attempt to end up as Hiro and Ruli's partners. Jellymon pretty much forced Kiyoshiro to become hers, stealing Hiro's last Digivice and plugging in her DIM Card as soon as it was on her victim's wrist.
  • Cerebro Electro: She is a computer genius just like her partner and uses electric attacks.
  • Combat Medic: As Thetismon, her Doctease allows her to heal her allies.
  • Combat Tentacles: In base form, most of her attacks involve her tentacles, which shift accordingly. They can form a ray gun to fire Bibi Thunder, wrap around the appropriate limbs for Bolt Knuckle and Spiral Kick, or even turn into a USB so she can load herself into a game.
  • The Cracker: May rival her partner in this regard. She was able to repurpose his virtual talismans and was impressively fast when convinced to help with deleting them.
  • Cute Bruiser: While she does use electric attacks, Jellymon is quite the bruiser in melee combat across all of her forms as well.
  • Dinky Drivers: When joining in the race against Sistermon Ciel, she steals a two-seater go-kart much to Kiyoshiro's distraught, using her longer tentacles to operate the pedals due to her short stature.
  • Electric Jellyfish: Uses electrical attacks such as Bibi Thunder.
  • Expy:
    • A humanoid Digimon with hornlike protrusions who has electric powers and calls the object of her teasing "Darling". Sounds like a certain Oni we know.
    • Jellymon also has quite a bit in common with Gomamon and Terriermon, being a snarky, mischievous Digimon whose human partner is a sensible and studious person. Jellymon is a sea creature like Gomamon and can fly like Terriermon. Her final level is also inspired by a mech like Terriermon.
    • Amphimon's design is a more feminine take on the titular mech from Overman King Gainer, just with the "overcoat" motif traded for an old-fashioned diving suit.
  • Fatal Flaw: Jellymon is detrimentally fearless and tends to do almost anything she wants to, frequently getting herself into trouble and sometimes intentionally. Her smug attitude before shit really hits the fan over her actions can't save her when she's overpowered, especially early on when the protagonists frequently run into Digimon leagues stronger than theirs.
  • Friend in the Black Market: Many of the Digimon stuck in Japan come to Jellymon when there's something they want. She has a habit of sneaking off at night to make deals and scout for goods - sometimes even vanishing for days on end according to Kiyoshiro. This becomes a plot point in at least two Digimon incidents involving Sistermon Ciel and the infamous Sealsdramon, and much later on a group of Andiramon.
  • Furry Reminder: She loses her nerve when Zassoumon first attacked her, to the extent that she ran away instead of fighting back and hid in Hiro's sheets. Zassoumon goes after their victim's moisture and she is based on jellyfish, which are at least 90% water.
  • God Guise: As Thetismon, she is mistaken for a heavenly goddess when she uses her healing powers to nullify the poison affecting the mall residents. Fittingly, Thetis is occasionally a sea nymph/sea goddess from Greek Mythology.
  • Gratuitous English:
    • Jellymon will occasionally replace words with their English equivalents. In a weird usage of this trope, she exclusively uses the English words "me" and "you" instead of the Japanese equivalent pronouns, even to the extent of using "me-tachi" for "we" or "us" and "you-tachi" for the plural "you". This is even a plot point in Episode 44; She's behind the "Reward Elf" website where she does this in text form.
    • After mostly disappearing as Thetismon, it's Exaggerated by Amphimon, who speaks in a hammy Funny Foreigner accent while using more complicated English words like "Stop" or "very, very".
  • Heal It with Water: Her evolution to Thetismon adds water-elemental motifs to her previous electric theme, and also comes with the ability to cure poisons.
  • Hydro-Electro Combo:
    • Thetismon uses electric attacks but doesn't have water powers. However, water is featured in her Transformation Sequence.
    • Amphimon plays this absolutely straight, utilizing both water and electric attacks.
  • If It Swims, It Flies: She can float through the air just like how a jellyfish would swim in the ocean.
  • It Amused Me: Torturing Kiyoshiro, hacking his myriad of virtual talismans to instead wreak havoc upon Japan's banking systems and inadvertently summoning a divine and vengeful Perfect Digimon as a result? Jellymon did it all to entertain herself while she studied human activity. She also helped with Sistermon Ciel's speed freak habits because she wanted to.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: She's quite capable with electrical attacks (and healing magic, as Thetismon), but is also quite handy in melee combat with hard-hitting attacks.
  • Lady of Black Magic: With a dose of Combat Medic, Thetismon is much more graceful and calm than her lower evolutions, and looks and sounds more mature to boot.
  • Loving Bully: It is implied she is this for Kiyoshiro, as after he was cool for once, she calls him “darling” in a whisper, which only Ruli notices. After Kinkakumon beats her to a pulp, Jellymon is in tears begging for an unconscious Kiyoshiro to wake up since they need each other's help to beat her.
  • Male Gaze: Part of her evolution process from Thetismon to Amphimon involves a close-up view of her butt as it changes forms.
  • Never My Fault: She hacked into Kiyoshiro's virtual talisman system and shut down all internet transactions for fun, and although she helps Kiyoshiro shut all but one of the talisman programs down, she makes Kiyoshiro apologize to Majiramon, even though she herself was responsible for the whole incident.
  • Older Alter Ego: In appearance, abilities, and personality, her evolutions resemble older and more experienced versions of her base form - from bratty kid (Jellymon) to a teenager with a chip on her shoulder (TeslaJellymon) to mature woman (Thetismon).
  • Prehensile Hair: Tentacles, technically, but they're styled to resemble hair - and they can get molded into different shapes as if they were made of clay.

  • Retractable Appendages: She can retract her humanoid body into her head, leaving just her jellyfish features.
  • Say My Name: Calling out Kiyoshiro by his full name as she shocks him awake in a desperate attempt to save him from Kinkakumon triggers her first evolution into TeslaJellymon.
  • Secret-Keeper: Apparently knows the real reason Kiyoshiro's hand is wrapped up.
  • The Load: Not only Amphimon ends up being completely unused in the last few battles and was defeated by Bloomlordmon; but against Regulusmon, she ends up being an outright liability, being thrown at Sirusmon and opening him up to be shot right through and (temporarily) killed.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Jellymon isn't so much evil as she is particularly neutral in contrast to the rest of the crew, but she's an unabashed bully and managed to inflict chaos by unleashing deadly Digimon like Majiramon or Andiramon on Hiro's dorm. This is largely Downplayed after becoming much kinder and less self-centered later on in the series.
  • Too Dumb to Live: In episode 13, she wanders off alone to go window shopping despite knowing a Digimon serial killer is at large, forcing the rest of the group to come to her aid with the only reason she managed to live being lucky enough that Sealsdramon didn't notice she was behind a window.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Initially only seeking to amuse herself by tormenting Kiyoshiro and causing trouble or chasing her own goals without thinking about others, she gradually grows to be a lot kinder, caring, and more compassionate towards her friends, then later on becoming concerned about others in general.
  • Troll: She likes to scare and tease her partner, and relishes in pissing off her opponents during battle once she has the upper hand.
  • Tsundere: Type A towards Kiyoshiro, she messes with and berates him, but does care for him.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: In Episode 44, several Andiramon asked Jellymon to make a delivery site for them. In the next few days, students in Hiro's dorm were ordering valuable goods en masse through another student using her site, only for the Andiramon to almost collapse the entire building by creating the goods from its life force. What makes this a case of an unwitting instigator of doom instead of Jellymon simply wreaking havoc for fun, however, is she had no idea they're draining energy from buildings with people inside.
  • Verbal Tic: As Jellymon and TeslaJellymon she constantly ends her lines in "sa" (think "y'know?" said with mild swagger). However, as Thetismon she takes on more mature and ladylike mannerisms, which includes her tic switching to the softer "wa" instead.

    Espimon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/espimon.png

Voiced by: Yumiko Kobayashi
Level: Child
Attribute: Virus
Attacks: Mot Bomb (Espimon), Stamper Missile, Doronger (HoverEspimon), Dyvanish (both)

A mysterious wandering Digimon who first appeared assisting Gammamon in finding Hiro when he was possessed by the Hojo Clan lord. When he's not exploring in search of the "real" Hiro, he resides at his dorm or tags along with the group.

His Evolutions are as follows:

  • Child: Espimon, his default form. A blue rodent with built-in rocket boosters and a personal cloaking device.
  • Adult: HoverEspimon, an armored version of Espimon fused with a flying saucer.

  • Aloof Ally: Espimon often assists the group in solving Digimon cases, but he's quite distant especially towards Hiro because he thinks that he's a fake. At least at first.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Arrives to save Gammamon from Doumon's shikigami, when the former was trampled by one.
    • He does it another time when Publimon was about to get Kiyoshiro's head fractured by using his Mot Bomb to blow up the flower pot dropped on him.
  • Body Horror:
    • He was one of Calamaramon's first victims, initially having his arm twisted and eventually winding up with his whole body so contorted that he's left helpless.
    • In Episode 54 he was possessed by the Fujitsumon leader, who took residence inside his mouth alongside several others. Also doubles as Demonic Possession since the leader can control his body to attack.
  • Breaking Old Trends: Espimon is one of the very few protagonist Digimon without an actual human partner. Also, despite being close to Hiro, it takes a very long time to be able to sync up with him.
  • Calling Your Attacks: Since he initially doesn't have a human partner to sync with, Espimon can utilise all of his techniques whenever he wants and won't be inhibited whenever the humans are incapacitated.
  • Catchphrase: Tends to say "I'm so unlucky!" when he's caught in trouble.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: While he's a Virus Digimon and a bit of a stubborn moron at times, Espimon is one of the group's closest allies and was sent to find Hiro by his father in the first place.
  • Literal-Minded: The reason he doesn't believe Hiro is the Hiro he's looking for is because Hokuto described his son as a spitting image of him, leading Espimon to reject Hiro as the real one because he doesn't look exactly like his Dad. This becomes a plot point in Episode 40, where his arm was twisted by Calamaramon when he was trying to find "the real Hiro", leading to Hiro, Gammamon and Jellimon investigating her alongside him.
  • Right in Front of Me: Sometimes, he talks about Hiro being a fake right in front of Hiro himself.
  • Sixth Ranger: While Espimon doesn't have a partner and can't evolve (which in turn limits his offensive capabilities), his decision to crash at Hiro's dorm whenever he's not out searching for the "real" Hiro has led to him becoming a mainstay in the group and featured in the opening credits as of the 57th episode. He finally properly syncs with Hiro and gains the ability to digivolve.
  • Smoke Out: As HoverEspimon, his Doronger ability allows him to create smokescreens. It's thick enough that even a Mega Digimon can't see through it.
  • Stealth Expert: His Dyvanish technique allows him to turn invisible, and it's helped him gather intel for Hiro. He retains the ability as HoverEspimon and gains a smokescreen ability.
  • Sticky Fingers: Espimon's diet consists of food he's stolen, whether it be from Hiro's fridge or nearby shops. Hiro isn't fond of this habit and has unsuccessfully attempted to dissuade him from it.
  • Support Party Member: Most of the Digimon the group has faced since Espimon's debut have been Perfects or Ultimates, so as a Child he generally isn't capable of doing much against them. He is however excellent at espionage thanks to Dyvanish allowing him to gather information and locate targets/victims undetected. He retains this role upon becoming HoverEspimon, as by this point the heroes are facing Ultimates and he's still just a Champion, but his abilities let him provide a great deal of support.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Originally not caring much about the people caught up in the schemes of malicious Digimon and mainly helping for Gammamon's sake, in Episode 62 he helps Aoi in spite of her being a friend of a friend at best...it's no coincidence he finally evolves this episode. Even before that episode, he has shown gradual signs of being more caring and concerned about human victims of various Digimon schemes, such as him immediately taking action with the rest of the group to stop Bastemon in Episode 54, or helping Jellymon in stopping the human dolls from immolating themselves in Episode 56.
  • Throw Down the Bomblet: His Mot Bomb attack has him launch time bombs that bear a cross between mice (the animal) and mouses (the computer device).
  • Visible Invisibility: When using Dyvanish, Espimon normally disappears completely from sight, but has a setting where he can allow a select few to see him. To the heroes and the viewer, this is shown as him becoming a see-through Espimon-shaped silhouette with glowing eyes.
  • Walking the Earth: Wanders all over Japan to search for "the real Hiro". He eventually decides to stop this and moves into Hiro's dorm room, while still conducting his search when not hanging out with the gang.

    The Jet-Black Conqueror (UNMARKED SPOILERS)

GulusGammamon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gulusgammamon.gif
GulusGammamon
Regulusmon

"I'll show you that we only have two options. Eat, or be eaten!"
Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro
Attribute: Virus
Attacks: Dead End Skewer, Desdemona, Dark Pales (GulusGammamon), Kalyp Bite, Gran TRACE, Dead-End Spike, Genierce (Regulusmon)

Gammamon hides within him a darkness that frightens anyone who comes across it, and that darkness comes in the form of a separate entity commonly known as GulusGammamon. What appears to be a Dark Evolution that tends to emerge in life-or-death scenarios, he is a vicious and calculating Digimon who is exponentially stronger than Gammamon's other forms.

It turns out that he's Gammamon's original personality, an infamous Evil Dragon Digimon known as "The Jet-Black Conqueror", who kicked off the plot by contaminating the Digital World with his GRB Factor (Gulus Realm Burst) in order to create a dog-eat-dog world where his personal army would rule supreme.

His Evolutions are as follows:

  • Child: Gammamon, a white triceratops with a scarf that he inhibits. Gammamon noticeably becomes very angry and aggressive whenever GulusGammamon takes over.
  • Adult: GulusGammamon, Gammamon's Dark Evolution. The black counterpart to BetelGammamon who dons a Badass Cape instead of a long scarf, which also doubles as his wings, and uses black flames. Despite being Adult-level, GulusGammamon is significantly more powerful than Perfect-level Digimon.
  • Perfect: Regulusmon, a dragon Digimon resembling a black counterpart of Canoweissmon who rules through rage and fear. Despite being a Perfect, its power resembles those of Megidramon and can unleash Gulus Realm Burst particles that drive other Digimon into a frenzy.
  • Ultimate (Vital Bracelet BE only): Arcturusmon, a dragon Digimon resembling a black counterpart of Siriusmon, but with drills on his arms instead of swords. A mysterious Digimon that only existed in hypothetical simulations.

  • 13 Is Unlucky: GulusGammamon debuted in Episode 13.
  • Abstract Eater: He's somehow able to rip the color out of the Oboromon and eat it, causing them agony and sending them crumpling to the ground.
  • Alien Invasion: Assuming any part of the backstory he gives in episode 67 is true, he might be an alien invader.
  • Alien Among Us: He might actually be an alien from a distant planet. Maybe, given it's implied at least part of his backstory is a lie he made up on the spot.
  • Almighty Janitor: His forms are all stronger than what their level suggests. As GulusGammamon he easily slaughters Perfects, and as Regulusmon, he can give even the strongest Ultimates a hell of a beating and easily slaughter the protagonists' Ultimates if he wants to.
  • Aloof Ally: He avoids all answers about his own origin, the Digimon World, and his father because "it's not time yet". It takes all the way to Episode 66 to reveal what he's even here for and how he managed to spread the GRB plague inside Gammamon's body.
  • Alternate Identity Amnesia: After devolving back from GulusGammamon, Gammamon has no idea about what's happening. When Witchmon asks him about it in Episode 49, Gammamon himself has no idea what she's talking about. This is because GulusGammamon is a distinct entity from Hiro's Gammamon.
  • Ambiguously Evil: Horrifically subverted/double subverted. His exact motives are ambiguous for most of the series, as despite his brutality and ominous appearance he only attacks those who attacked him or Hiro first - while the rest of the team are terrified of him, Hiro seems to believe he just has severe trust issues. It's not until the final three episodes that he's revealed as the series' resident world-wiping apocalyptic monstrosity. Then comes the final episode of the series, and it's revealed there's an entity that's an even bigger threat, for which he attempted to raise an army in order to combat it, which would end making him not the world-wiping apocalyptic mon, and instead just a well intentioned extremist, assuming what he claims is true.
  • Ambiguous Situation: After he was devoured by Gammamon it wasn't exactly made clear if he was made a part of his body or if he was simply reverted back to being a separate entity that resided in the same body as Gammamon's like he was initially. Later conversations heavily imply that he is indeed, still a completely separate entity that resides in Gammamon's body, and not a being that was assimilated by him and kept on a tight leash, considering it was mentioned by Gammamon himself that the two of them have worked out some kind of agreement in regards to how they share the same body, and it was later shown that is still possible for him to take control, while also revealing he was forced to agree to a set of undisclosed rules that Gammamon set.
  • Arm Cannon: Regulusmon's shield can also function as this for his Genius attack, firing three devastating lasers powerful enough to fatally wound Siriusmon.
  • Assimilation Backfire: He tries to devour Gammamon within their inner world, but ultimately ends up consumed by his good counterpart with the aid of his human partner Hiro, and forced to behave himself. He accepts his defeat, coming to terms with the fact that his own philosophy was used against him.
  • Ax-Crazy: Though murderously sadistic, as GulusGammamon, it's far more subdued. Once he evolves into Regulusmon, his sadism goes through the roof, especially when Hiro incurs his wrath. He also does not stop talking about killing other Digimon or enforcing his social darwinist ideologies and cackles like an unhinged maniac after nearly every other sentence he speaks, even as he blows a hole in Siriusmon's chest and every other living being involved in the battle is stunned speechless by the slaughter.
  • Bad Guys Do the Dirty Work: Most of GulusGammamon's victims are Digimon who've proven themselves to be absolutely irredeemable killers who couldn't be stopped by the heroes otherwise.
  • Beast of the Apocalypse: To give you an exact hint, the Digimon Reference Book compares the sheer power of his Perfect form to Megidramon and describes its presence as nothing short of a massive Digital Hazard, despite only looking like a black version of Canoweissmon. It's not a unfounded claim, since he does start a massive Digital Hazard that sends almost all the resident Digimon packing, and the ones who stayed turned into insane, rampaging monsters.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: He's spent the entire series trying to get Hiro to synchronize with him, presumably under the belief that Hiro will stop being a pacifist and come to follow his outdated, savage ideology. Come the penultimate episode, Hiro finally agrees to do so... and uses it to give Gammamon enough strength to retake control of his body, causign the two to separate. He does not take it well.
  • Beware My Stinger Tail: GulusGammamon and Regulusmon's tail has a noticeable barb on its end that he weaponizes, the first time which he used to impale Sealsdramon through the head.
  • Breath Weapon: Regulusmon's Gran Trace attack has him fire a blast of dark energy from his mouth, effectively a dark copy of Canonweissmon's Gran Nova.
  • Big Bad: In the penultimate episode of the series, he reveals that he is the Digimon spreading the GRB infection in the Digital World in order to create an army that will devour all in its path, making him ultimately responsible for the Digimon's eventual exodus into the Human World and the series' cataclysm. However, if what he revealed in the season finale is true, and his claims about a dangerous entity coming to earth is in fact not false, then this would make him a Well Intentioned Extremist, rather than the big bad.
  • Big Bad Friend: No matter how much he revels in destroying his foes, he still seemingly cares about Hiro and his Gammamon, calls the former "brother" and protects the latter from danger, but everyone else is expendable. However, he drops the friend part during his Curb-Stomp Battle against TonosamaGekomon, taking on a much more threatening demeanor toward Hiro, and he ends all pretenses when he finds out Hiro tricked him into being expelled from Gammamon's body. Though season finale seems to imply that he does indeed care about Hiro, considering he still calls him "brother", even if he doesn't express it in a preferred manner.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: No matter the form, his eyes are pure black with glowing pupils and he is a much more violent Digimon than anything else encountered. The difference is that GulusGammamon's eyes are glowing violet and Regulusmon's eyes glow yellow.
  • Boxed Crook: At the end of the series, he's beaten and devoured by Siriusmon and willingly surrenders, allowing Gammamon to lay down a set of undisclosed rules. He appears to be able to take control of their body and talk like he has done before, but it wasn't clarified if he can only do this if Gammamon allows him to, or if he can do it whenever he wants to, but has agreed to not act out, in accordance to whatever undisclosed deal they had made when their conflict ended.
  • Breaking Old Trends:
    • Dark Evolutions of the leader's partner Digimon are nothing new to the franchise. Prior cases like SkullGreymon, Megidramon, and ShineGreymon: Ruin Mode came from the leader trying to force an evolution fueled by negative emotions, leaving the partner Digimon a rampaging beast that can no longer communicate. The Jet-Black Champion, in the other hand, is none of these things:
      • He came not from Hiro's negative emotions but from a separate entity within Gammamon's body. It is also implied that GulusGammamon is his natural evolved form, and the usual evolutions of Hiro's Gammamon are a result of The Power of Love.
      • Unlike other Dark Evolutions, which happened without a special evolution animation, GulusGammamon and Regulusmon have evolution animations that falls in line with other evolution sequences in the series.
      • Unlike other Dark Evolutions who were one-time monsters, GulusGammamon has made several appearances throughout the show, and he's also the series' apocalyptic abomination Digimon.
      • He has a sense of macabre intelligence that isn't present in Dark Evolutions other than the Plutomon and Fanglongmon from Digimon Survive. Rather than corrupted input from humans however, he attains this state due to being a separate entity from Hiro's Gammamon.
    • He's also this to other apocalyptic Digimon or digital lifeforms (such as the D-Reaper or the Eaters) before him.
      • Usually, apocalyptic entities have at least one form that is morbidly grosteque or just flat-out look wrong. On the other hand, GulusGammamon and all of his further forms only resemble Evil Counterparts of Gammamon's forms, just significantly stronger.
      • The Jet-Black Champion's presence is well-known since Episode 1 rather than moving around the shadows manipulating events or simply not showing up before they had to.
      • He has a personal connection with the protagonists (specifically, he was somehow sealed inside one of their Digimon), rather than something that just shows up and had to be stopped. As a result, unlike the others who are flat-out heartless monsters or Generic Doomsday Villains, he has shown several moments of compassion towards Hiro and the other Digimon he's sealed in. Therefore, he's also the only Digimon of such nature to be spared, rather than killed outright.
  • Calling Your Attacks: Whereas prior to his appearances, the partners subliminally told the kids their attack names and the kids called them out, GulusGammamon calls his own attacks after Hiro refused to do so.
  • Cape Wings: In fast flight, his cloak tends to split off into two devil-like wings. As Regulusmon, they are folded in a way like Canoweissmon's.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist:
    • To Lucemon from Digimon Frontier. Both of them are incredibly powerful Digimon with great ambitions to devastate the world and recreate them in their own image, whose lower levels are way stronger than their level suggests. Lucemon's Child form is stronger than Seraphimon and his Perfect form is one of the strongest Digimon in the franchise, while GulusGammamon easily slaughters Perfects and his Perfect form is comparable to Megidramon in terms of destructive power. However, Lucemon starts as a pretty boy of an angel but progressively becomes more monstrous and demonic. Meanwhile, GulusGammamon only evolves into brutal, dark variants of Gammamon's usual evolutions. Furthermore, while Lucemon is an insane megalomaniac who cares for nothing but himself and treats everyone like pawns. GulusGammamon cares about Hiro and Gammamon to some extent, and only goes all-out as Regulusmon once he realizes he's being tricked.
    • To Meicoomon from Digimon Adventure tri. They are partner Digimon who are also apocalyptic abominations who spread deadly plagues that drive Digimon murderously insane. However, while Meicoomon unconsciously infects other Digimon in the real world due to being reincarnated from Apocalymon, GulusGammamon is implied to be always an infamous great evil who willingly spreads the GRB infection in the Digital World even when sealed inside Gammamon. While the DigiDestined refuse to take Meicoomon as a threat due to their bonds regardless of warnings from other parties, the protagonists treat the situation with GulusGammamon very seriously, and Hiro doesn't recognize him as his stepbrother like he does with his own Gammamon. Finally, while Meicoomon ends up proving herself to be beyond saving and had to be killed, GulusGammamon ends up making an official Heel–Face Turn under the other Gammamon.
  • Chekhov's Gun: In Episode 19, Piccolomon tried to eradicate Gammamon by going back in time, only to run back to the present day scared shitless. It's implied that he ran into Regulusmon instead of the child-like Digimon he was expecting.
  • The Corrupter: He tries to convince Hiro that Digimon are savage beasts that will kill him if he doesn't kill them, even though the majority of Digimon are shown to be friendly or at least open to reason unlike the Sealsdramon that he uses to prove his point the first time he shows up. Naturally, Hiro does not buy it at all.
  • The Corruption: Spreads Gulus Realm Burst particles while inside Gammamon before he and the other Digimon entered the human world. And unlike Tri.'s Meicoomon, he unambiguously does it willingly. Any Digimon who touches the particles will turn into blackened, frenzied monsters that Regulusmon describes as having "increased survival instincts and fighting power". This is not an unfounded claim, considering Dagomon easily devastates the protagonist's Perfects and survives an attack from Siriusmon, and Raffelsimon effortlessly overwhelms Siriusmon despite she's not supposed to.
  • Combat Pragmatist: At one point, Diarbbitmon and Amphimon distracts him long enough for Siriusmon to land an attack on him. In reality, he could easily wipe the floor with all of them in one shot, but he's just trying to catch Siriusmon off guard. Once the Ultimate-level does try to attack him, he blows a hole in his chest in one go. He even mocks the heroes for thinking they had him on the ropes.
Regulusmon: I only pretended to be losing and you fell for it right away. Hehehehe...hahahahahahaha!
  • Cosmic Motifs: In contrast to Gammamon and his evolutions' star motif, GulusGammamon and Regulusmon are themed off of a black hole, as shown by both Gammamon becoming GulusGammamon and GulusGammamon becoming Regulusmon seeing them and all the DNA strands implode into nothing before the actual transformation happens.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Due to his sheer power, anytime he engages in battle, it's less of a battle than an all-out slaughter.
  • Dark Is Evil: An Evil Dragon Digimon with a pitch-black color scheme feared throughout the Digital World for his ruthlessness and is known as "The Jet-Black Conqueror", primarily uses dark fire as his main form of attack, and can corrupt other Digimon and turn them into savage monsters who share his black color scheme.
  • Death by Irony: He's quite a fan of delivering this to Digimon that he has slain so far, perhaps as a part of his Pay Evil unto Evil mindset. In an incredibly dark example of this trope, he also does this to Hiro once when he finds out the boy was just tricking him (by catching Siriusmon off guard by pretending to be overwhelmed, then blowing a hole in his chest).
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Of the franchise's trademark apocalyptic lifeform. Traditionally, these are otherworldy Eldritch Abominations who show up out of nowhere and have to be stopped on sight, and the ones that do have long-term planning operate in the shadows through using others as pawns. GulusGammamon on the other hand, acts like a standard Dark Evolution until he doesn't and walks amongst ordinary people and Digimon through Gammamon, an otherwise innocent and harmless Digimon who is always living with Hiro, becoming extremely personal from the get-go as a result. At the same time, he displays a macabre intelligence akin to Diablomon or Plutomon, just much, more sadistic, and is one of the few Digimon who plunged a protagonist into despair by seemingly killing his beloved Gammamon. All of this makes him an extremely deadly threat that proves that the most dangerous Digimon are Hidden in Plain Sight and they can choose to pop up at anytime to bring forth the end.
  • Defeat Equals Friendship: After Gammamon defeats and devours him, he willingly submits to Gammamon's rules as per his own Darwinistic worldview.
  • Defence Mechanism Superpower: One of the ways he can emerge seems to be if Gammamon is about to die.
  • Demonic Possession: He makes it very clear that he's a foreign entity within Hiro's Gammamon, so whenever Gammamon looks completely unhinged, he's the one acting through him rather than something coming from Gammamon's end.
  • Despotism Justifies the Means: The other Digimon don't call him the "Jet-Black Conqueror" for nothing — his goal is to spread GRB particles throughout the Digital World and turn it into a Darwinistic, dog-eat-dog hellscape where he and his army rule supreme.
  • Detect Evil: Gammamon quickly identifies enemies and victims of possession because they "give bad vibes".
  • Draconic Abomination: An evil dragon Digimon whose presence brings forth the end of the Digital World and indirectly the end of human civilization too, courtesy of the Digital World's destruction disabling all electronic appliances. He may also be an alien.
  • The Dreaded: Apparently, he is infamous in the Digital World for his brutality as the 漆黒の覇王 (Shikkoku no Haou, "Jet-Black Conqueror"). He is first addressed by this name by Oboromon at the end of episode 42, and later by Witchmon in episode 49. When the infection he spreads reaches a tipping point, even Ultimate-level Digimon, which are established as Physical Gods capable of reality warping and killing or seriously hurting hundreds of people all by themselves, escape alongside all the Digimon they could bring into the human world. It's for a good reason; any Digimon who gets hit by his Gulus Realm Burst particles turn into insane monsters, he can fight BloomLordmon, one of the strongest Digimon the protagonists ran into, on equal footing, and seemingly slays Siriusmon in one shot. He lowered Siriusmon's guard before delivering the fatal blow, but he still makes it clear that he could easily crush all of the protagonist's Ultimates in a few hits even if he didn't do that. It's very clear that nobody wants to deal with him, or the infection he leaves behind.
  • Enemy Within: Whereas Gammamon has no awareness of GulusGammamon, the latter is very much aware of Hiro and his current imprisonment within the sweet little Digimon. His first remarks are relief at no longer being "cramped up" in Rookie form, and informing Hiro that even though they've spent a lot of time together, he'd be a fool to ever think they were friends.
  • Enemy Without: Thanks to Hiro tricking Regulusmon, Gammamon is finally split apart from him.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Make no mistake, he will rip you to shreds if you cross him, but Episode 42 shows whatever his dark ambitions for the human and Digimon worlds are, he still does think of Hiro as his brother. Any Digimon foolish enough to harm or kill his human will quickly find their free trial of living has just ended. However, Episode 59 shows that he is not above manipulating Hiro into doing what he wants and has no problems threatening his friends to do it, and he snaps and drops off all pretenses of friendliness once Hiro tricks him into Synchronizing with him so he's expelled from Gammamon.
  • Evil Counterpart: All of his forms are dark variants of Gammamon's evolutions, but significantly more cruel, aggressive, and powerful.
  • Evilutionary Biologist: Throughly obseessed with the outdated idea of survival of the fittest and seeks to create an army of all-devouring, corrupted Digimon that he describes as evolved beings who survived the hellscape he creates.
  • Evil Only Has to Win Once: Says as much to Hiro in episode 59 after he fails to get the latter to sync with him. He tells him that sooner or later, Hiro will find himself in a situation where he'll have to sync with him and it's only a matter of time.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Inside their inner-world he nearly dupes Hiro into wasting time saving him, under the guise of impersonating Gammamon, who is elsewhere slowing dying. He even pretends to be afraid and crying. He slips up when forgets to Baby Talk, which Hiro immediately picks up upon the deception, exposing him as the imposter. GulusGammamon remarks he always hated the childish way his good side talked.
  • Final Boss: Regulusmon is the Final Boss of Digimon Ghost Game. Unlike most examples however, we do not see him evolving into his Ultimate form, Arcturusmon.
  • Final Boss Preview: A variant of. In the first few appearances he easily slaughters several Digimon who would otherwise easily kill off some of the protagonists. And then in Episode 66, he really shows up to become the final boss.
  • Foil: GulusGammamon is this to Hiro and, ironically, to Hiro's Gammamon. His nature is the opposite of his Good Counterpart, being cruel and sadistic, and his philosophy of eat or be eaten is a direct clash with Hiro who would rather solve issues with words.
  • Freudian Excuse: The finale implies that his "strong devour the weak" attitude stems from trauma at seeing his home planet devoured by a Planet Eater (though he may or may not have made this story up).
  • Gold-Colored Superiority: Fitting for a Digimon known as the "Jet-Black Champion" capable of wiping the entire Digital World, Regulusmon is decorated with gold around his purple-and-black armored body.
  • Good Is Not Soft: In a very twisted sense of "good", as in he's only such because he was fighting for Hiro and the other Gammamon. When GulusGammamon questions Sealsdramon's motive in killing so many Digimon, including Bokomon, and concludes that it was solely to increase his kill count, he prompts to Hiro that this one deserves to die.
  • Good Wings, Evil Wings: In episode 42 or as Regulusmon, his cape transforms into constant devil wings.
  • Graceful Loser: Like Piedmon, he applies his Social Darwinist mentality to himself, and after being defeated by Siriusmon and devoured, he willingly surrenders and agrees to Gammamon's rules.
  • Hate Plague: Capable of generating the "GRB Factor", even while inside Gammamon - a substance which heightens the power and survival instincts of Digimon exposed to it at the price of turning them into insane monsters, while giving them a black-and-purple colour scheme similar to his own.
  • Hidden in Plain Sight: What makes him different from the assorted apocalyptic abominations plaguing the Digital World and the Human World in past series is that he's literally right there next to Hiro from Episode 1, as opposed to working behind the scenes or not even showing up until they really want to.
  • Horns of Villainy: As opposed to Canoweissmon's three short, red horns, Regulusmon has three much longer, curved horns, signifying that he is way stronger and way more deadlier than his standard counterpart and a way more sadistic individual than he lets himself to be in his Adult form.
  • Horrifying the Horror: There's something about GulusGammamon that made Clockmon shit himself upon seeing his visage. His arrival even prompts the indiscriminate killer Sealsdramon to sheath his knife and try to avoid detection... but he learns the hard way why you shouldn't push Gammamon far enough to evolve into him. When he shows his true colors even slightly, Digimon start fleeing from the Digital World in droves, and it's implied that even incredibly powerful Ultimates like ClavisAngemon and Quartzmon know well enough to take their leave alongside huge groups of their lesser brethren than to even bother.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: GulusGammamon's Dead End Skewer, as the name suggests, skewers the victim on the spike at the end of his tail. Regulusmon also has an attack that does the same thing.
  • Imposter Forgot One Detail: While Hiro is inside Gammamon's mental world, Regulusmon tries to impersonate Gammamon to trick him into leaving the shattered mental space with him. However, he forgets to copy the way Gammamon refers to certain things and individuals, making Hiro realize he was an imposter.
  • In Their Own Image: Regulusmon left a bit of his GRB factor in the Digital World before being sent into the human world so that it would be corrupted into a Social Darwinist Death World as he believes it should be.
  • Lack of Empathy: His reaction to blowing a lethal wound in Siriusmon's chest is gleefully laughing at Siriusmon for falling for obvious traps, accompanied with an Evil Laugh. Meanwhile, anyone else watching and/or participating in that fight are either horrifically shocked or in Hiro's case, just dead on the inside.
  • Large Ham: As Regulusmon, he has a tendency to scream his dialogue at the top of his lungs (as much as he can with his low-pitched voice). His GulusGammamon form, on the other hand, is a lot more subdued at it.
  • Last of His Kind: If the backstory he gives in episode 67 is accurate, he's the sole survivor of a destroyed planet. However, it's also implied he might be lying.
  • Laughing Mad: As Regulusmon, he makes a very wicked and loud cackle often. When accompanied with his constant Slasher Smile, it makes him look more sinister than GulusGammamon already is.
  • Leaking Can of Evil: He's stuck inside of Gammamon and seemingly can't emerge on his own, but under certain circumstances can emerge. Despite being sealed inside another Gammamon, he was still capable of dropping some of his Gulus Realm Burst particles from the innocent Digimon's body before he was sent to the human world. The infection eventually spread to the entire Digital World and practically devastated it, with the sphere where BloomLordmon and the mysterious voice was in being the only safe spot.
  • Leitmotif: He is accompanied by an ominous and droning theme whenever he makes an appearance, and any episode where Gammamon evolves into him notably lacks the usage of First Riders at all.
  • Living with the Villain: Given that Gammamon was living with Hiro all the time as his stepbrother and GulusGammamon resides within the former's body, this naturally means that Hiro was living alongside the series' resident world-wiping abomination as well. After his defeat, he's reabsorbed by Gammamon and living with the heroes again, but this time having to abide by Gammamon's rules.
  • Made of Iron: Regulusmon is just as sturdy, if not even sturdier than an actual Ultimate, despite being a Perfect. He barely takes a scratch from BloomLordmon's attacks, and being hit by a Gran Del Sol (that's cancelled by his own Gran TRACE) only breaks off one of his horns. Even then, he still has more than enough stamina to kill the protagonist's Digimon multiple times over while BloomLordmon was gravely weakened and only pretending to be okay. Notably, after being hit head on by Siriusmon's Planet Knuckle, he has a hole through his chest when he reverted to GulusGammamon and survived, though is heavily wounded.
  • Man Bites Man: Regulusmon's Kalyp Bite has him bite the opponent with the jaws on his shield.
  • Morality Chain: For as much as he claims they aren't friends, GulusGammamon seems to have a soft spot for Hiro, as when he tried attacking Kiyoshiro, TeslaJellymon, Ruli, and Angoramon with a massive Desdemona and Hiro rushed in yelling for him to stop, GulusGammamon yells at Hiro to get out of the way, showing he didn't want Hiro to get caught in the blast. Episode 42 confirms this as true, that somewhere in his blackened heart he does care about his brother to keep pulling a Villainous Rescue. The chain breaks in episode 66 where Regulusmon flies into a rage with Hiro after the boy tricked him into syncing to save what remained of Gammamon.
  • Mythology Gag: He claims to be an alien. The original idea for the third Digimon series would have actually had the enemies be aliens from space.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Came very dangerously close to getting what he wanted on multiple occasions towards the end of the series, and it's only due to outside interference that things didn't go his way. As follows:
    • If Gekomon didn't decide to free all the humans TonosamaGekomon had assimilated, in order to save his master from potentially get killed, it is likely he would have succeeded in forcing Hiro's hand to sync with him right then and there, as he would have no other option lest he wanted to watch GulusGammamon kill the giant frog Digimon along with his trapped friends and other victims.
    • When he convinced Gammamon to relinquish control of his body to him, for all intents and purposes he had effectively permanently usurped control of his body, with Gammamon's consciousness being more or less snuffed out, and had it not been for Hiro's Batman Gambit to save his partner, it is likely what little remained of Gammamon would have disappeared if Regulusmon's battle with BloomLordmon continued any further, as same episode later revealed the the plant digimon was actually losing and more injured than he let on.
    • Of course the most chilling one of them all was when he successfully fatally injured Siriusmon by getting him to drop his guard, and then attempted to reclaim his body once again, by absorbing his data and devouring what remained of Gammamon. If Quantumon hadn't intervened, Gammamon would have been Killed Off for Real right then and there, as they slowed down time by 1000, and it was still cutting it close. Not only that, had Hiro not figured out Regulusmon's ruse when he did, it would have been too late to save his real partner from being erased as there would be nothing left to save of him, at which point Hiro himself would have also potentially died as well, or if not that, been completely at Regulusmon's mercy.
  • Number of the Beast:
    • GulusGammamon's "Desdemona" attack is named after the minor planet 666 Desdemona.
    • Like GulusGammamon that made his first appearance in Episode 13, Regulusmon makes his first appearance on Episode 66. Fitting, considering his Digimon Reference Book entry compares him to Megidramon.
  • One-Winged Angel: When finally completely set free in episode 66, he evolves into the apocalyptic Regulusmon.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • He's taken aback when when Siriusmon's Planet Knuckle overpowers his Gran Tres.
    • Gets an absolutely spectacular one when Siriusmon suddenly opens his mouth and lets loose shades of all his forms to suck him in and devour him.
  • Outside-Context Problem: It's implied GulusGammamon is Gammamon's original self, but under normal circumstances it's more common for a Digimon to die rather than be forced to de-evolve to their earlier stage(s), de-evolving doesn't typically come with memory loss when it does happen (and normally has a tamer's intervention), and a Digimon who dies and is reborn loses all their memories. GulusGammamon obviously hasn't, Gammamon doesn't seem to share memories with him at all despite that, and the former can come back out under certain situations. Episode 66 has him confirm their body was his first, but how he became Gammamon has yet to be revealed. If he's being honest, this may be because he's an alien and thus abides by different rules than everyone else.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: He seemingly believes that most, if not all Digimon are a sort of Always Chaotic Evil ilk and should be supressed though fear and rage, rather than humanized and pacified, despite the Digimon here are mostly reasonable and for the first few times he was using the worst-case scenarios (as in the sorts where other Digimon will call them a murderer) to make an example. A notable example is the first time he shows up, he berates Hiro as useless for refusing his Calling Your Attacks prompt to finish off Sealsdramon, and after doing the deed himself he directly calls out Hiro's pacifistic approach to enemy Digimon, citing that he will show Hiro that it's "Eat or BE Eaten" to the point of nearly killing the protagonists themselves, despite very few Digimon being as flat-out evil as Sealsdramon.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: The Jet-Black Champion is a walking wasteland capable of devastating the Digital World simply by spreading the Black Corrosion through Gammamon. Unlike Meicoomon from Tri., this is also willing on his part.
  • Plaguemaster: After being sealed inside Gammamon and transported from the Digital World into the Human World, he spreads a small stain of Gulus Realm Burst from his own body. Said stain engulfed the entire Digital World within more than a year, as he intended.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Despite being an incredibly powerful apocalyptic Digimon who makes it clear that he can and will bring forth the end if he wishes to in his debut, he's seemingly perfectly content with watching the protagonists deal with the situation from inside Gammamon until they can't handle the threat at hand and there's no sign of victory in sight, at which point he shows up, tries to kill the offending Digimon and attempts to convince Hiro that the Digimon are irrational, violent ilk that has to be killed by someone way stronger. However, Hiro can still convince him to spare an innocent TonosamaGekomon and his Gekomon minion despite the fact he could had been just killed both troublemakers anyways.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Not so much in his GulusGammamon form, but as Regulusmon, surprisingly. Despite being a Perfect form capable of easily killing Ultimate Digimon and creating world-wiping Digital Hazards, he acts like an edgy teen who gleefully brags about his outdated, eat-or-be-eaten philosophy at the top of his lungs, flat-out doesn't care about how many will die if his plan goes through, boasts about outsmarting and seemingly slaughtering Siriusmon in the most immature way possible, and cackles loudly after virtually every one of his lines.
  • Purple Is Powerful: All of his evolution forms are of a purple, black and gold coloration, and they are way stronger than their level suggests themselves to be. GulusGammamon effortlessly slaughters Perfect forms despite being an Adult, while his Perfect form fights equally with the strongest of Ultimates and effortlessly wrecks the protagonist's.
  • Red Baron: Episode 42 reveals that he's known to some Digimon as the 漆黒の覇王 (Shikkoku no Haou, "Jet-Black Conqueror"). It's not just something made-up by other Digimon, he really wants to conquer the Digital World and turn it into a savage hellhole.
  • Sadistic Choice: He offers one to Hiro in Episode 59: He can either sync with him, in which case he'll rip out the people TonosamaGeckomon absorbed, or he'll kill TonosamaGeckomon along with his victims. Unfortunately for him, Geckomon puts a wrench in this plan by surrendering and freeing everyone from his lord's body himself. Only Hiro's intervention prevents GulusGammamon from frying Geckomon on the spot.
  • Sadist: The thing that makes him stand out is in a series where the heroes try to avoid killing wherever possible and deaths are treated with weight, he actually enjoys killing and brutalizing his enemies. And his sadism is dialed up as Regulusmon. For example, his reaction to blasting a hole in Siriusmon's chest is to laugh maniacally.
  • Sealed Inside a Person-Shaped Can: GulusGammamon already existed before Gammamon did and is recognized by other Digimon, with Lilithmon in particular implying (and Regulusmon himself confirming) that he's just something else using Gammamon's body. While he can willingly revert back to Gammamon and can pop up at any time, he only decides to emerge when Gammamon is about to die or becomes extremely enraged. He manages to escape, but Gammamon puts him back, this time forcing him to follow his good side's rules.
  • Sharing a Body: Lilithmon implies that he's actually a second entity that somehow ended up within Gammamon's body. His tendencies to act like a separate being who comes out from Gammamon's body on his own volition further reinforces the Demon Lord of Lust's statement. This is later confirmed by Regulusmon, who says that it was his body originally. They're still sharing their body in the end, but this time they've worked out an agreement and GulusGammamon has to abide by Gammamon's rules.
  • Shout-Out: Assuming he's being honest, Regulusmon is a sadistic, alien dragon capable of destroying entire worlds and performing Hostile Terraforming, just like a certain three-headed dragon.
  • Slasher Smile: GulusGammamon tends to display a toothy grin normally before brutally killing his opponent. As Regulusmon, this is his default expression.
  • The Social Darwinist: Unlike most Digimon the protagonists encounter, he believes that the strong have all rights to devour the weak and that the world only has two rules — eat or be eaten. Fitting for this mindset and the title he's earned, his endgame is to corrupt the Digital World into a hellhole where only the strong worthy to serve him survive. Fortunately for everyone, like Piedmon he applies this to himself and willingly abides by Gammamon's rules after being bested in one-on-one combat with his other self. This mindset is also somewhat explained in the finale, where he claims that his own planet was "devoured" by an entity no one could stop, and that he wanted to build an army strong enough to defeat it and it will destroy both worlds after 2,000 years of human time, although it's unclear if he's just trying to rattle Quantumon, who is a Digimon that lives on Narnia Time.
  • The Sociopath: Tics all the boxes for a high-functioning one: Arrogant, manipulative, intelligent, high impulse control, devoid of empathy. Even his supposed affection for Hiro has his limits as he's not above manipulating him and is more than willing to hurt him or outright push him to the Despair Event Horizon if it suits his goals or he's pissed off enough.
  • Split-Personality Takeover: Gammamon's body was formerly Regulusmon's, but for some reason (implied to be exhaustion from travelling to Earth) a split personality manifested and became the dominant one. In a rare display of this trope, the benevolent personality paints over the malevolent one and not the other way around.
  • Story-Breaker Power: GulusGammamon might easily be the strongest Digimon introduced that is (somewhat) on the protagonists side, even beating out Angemon from the original Digimon Adventure. He is able to routinely curb stomp Digimon a level higher than his current form. Even his "base" form is able to keep up with some Megas. About the only reason most opponents in the series even pose a threat is because the heroes are strictly opposed to killing Digimon and Gulus himself is a Wild Card concerned more about his own survival and becoming stronger through Hiro than actively protecting anyone. It's telling that when he finally mellows out and starts to actually become more friendly with Hiro, the series ended.
  • Sudden Intelligence: Gammamon's other Adult evolutions largely have a similar childlike mentality to Gammamon himself, but as GulusGammamon he is noticeably more articulate and mature. It's confirmed this is because he's a distinctly different Digimon from Gammamon, and their body belonged to him first.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: A variation. The Jet-Black Champion is a brutal monstrosity who is more intelligent and much stronger than Gammamon's other forms, even capable of effortlessly slaughtering Perfect Digimon, but he's not a split personality. He's Gammamon's original self that somehow got turned into him, but his original persona survived somehow.
  • Take Over the World: His endgame is to spread his GRB particles throughout the Digital World and turn it into a Darwinistic hellscape where he and his personal army of savage Digimon rule supreme.
  • The Unreveal: He gives a backstory for himself as an alien invader from a distant world destroyed by an entity called the Endbringer...but it's implied part or all of it is a lie, leaving his origins vague. It's also never revealed how he became Gammamon.
  • They Were Holding You Back: Often tries to act as The Corrupter for Hiro, telling him his friends are worthless losers that will only endanger him, and prevent the boy from reaching his potential.
  • Token Evil Teammate: While technically on the heroes' team for most of the series (usually taking care of threats to them when Gammamon is threatened or enraged), it's clear he's a remorseless killer and an apocalyptic threat who's only barely kept in line by Gammamon's love for Hiro acting as a Restraining Bolt and his desire to manipulate Hiro into syncing with him. But an insane apocalyptic abomination on a tight leash is still an insane apocalyptic abomination, and when he finds out Hiro tricked him and had no intention of following his savage mindset, he promptly snaps and seemingly murders Siriusmon in front of him. Come the final episode of the series however, after he was defeated, devoured and forced to comply, it's hard to tell if he's still the evil person that he always was on a VERY tight leash, or he's had a genuine change of heart and has mellowed out once all was said an done.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Subverted. He's still a remorseless killer who enjoys brutalizing anyone who crosses him, but with each appearance he seems to get a little nicer to Hiro, going from seeing him as worthless to calling him "bro" ("aniki"). Then comes his battle with TonosamaGekomon, where he uses the term in a rather threatening way toward Hiro and all but outright states he's using Hiro for his own ends. By the time Hiro splits Regulusmon from Gammamon, he snaps and drops all pretenses to attack him and the protagonist's Digimon. Though come the series finale, when all matters are resolved, he still calls Hiro "bro", indicating that despite everything, his affection for him is very much genuine, even if he doesn't express it in a pleasant manner.
  • Torso with a View: It's blink and you'll miss it, but much like he did to Siriusmon, Siriusmon's Planet Knuckle put a hole through his chest, though he somehow survived.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Considering how powerful he is, it's no suprise that he would underestimate his opponents, due to the fact that he was simply just that much stronger than them, and had an easy time disposing whatever the threat was. This came back to bite him in the ass hard, as he viewed Gammamon as his lesser and weaker self, only for him to be ultimately overpowered in their final confrontation because he didn't account for others actually capable of helping Gammamon even when he almost dies, and literally devoured by him, not only having his body being usurped, but now being made into an entity that lives within Gammamon's consciousness, and has to abide by his rules.
  • Unreliable Narrator: In the last episode, he reveals himself to be an alien who came to the Digital World fleeing something called the Endbringer which will arrive in 2000 human years. It's implied he may be lying to either troll the heroes or provide them a way to get their happy ending, however.
  • Villainous Breakdown: The first time he actually outright loses his cool happens when Hiro tricks him in order to seperate him and Gammamon, resulting in him flying into a murderous rage.
  • Villain Has a Point:
    • After GulusGammamon calls out Hiro for Suicidal Pacifism in his first appearance, Hiro spends a lot of time thinking about his words and seems to agree that it's a genuine character flaw of his. In later episodes, the group slowly becomes more willing to deliver a Mercy Kill when there's no other option, and it's implied that GulusGammamon's respect for them has grown as a result.
    • His philosophy isn't completely wrong, especially in some other series where most Digimon are established as hostile, savage monsters that will attack on sight. Even in here some Digimon, including a few that he dealt with personally, are horrific, remorseless creatures who indiscriminately torture or kill people and Digimon. It's just not in this setting, where a good chunk of Digimon aren't the violent savages he paints them as, the Sealsdramon he killed to prove a point is flat-out called a murderer by the rest, and any Digimon causing incidents can be simply misguided or are at least up for negotiations.
  • Villain Killer: GulusGammamon is the only one of the heroes to actually kill enemy Digimon until Angoramon is forced to kill Digitamamon, brutally taking out Sealsdramon, Archnemon, and five Oboromon.
  • Villain Respect: When Hiro orders him to stand down in Episode 42, the evil Digimon is notably impressed at "taking the first step", even though they still haven't synched up to battle together.
  • Villainous Rescue: When dealing with an irredeemably wicked Digimon, GulusGammamon has saved the gang on several occasions when their pacifism fails, and he begins to Pay Evil unto Evil.
  • Walking Spoiler: GulusGammamon's debut coincides with the series' first Wham Episode and it's impossible to talk about his evolved forms without outing him as the one behind the series' apocalypse.
  • Walking Wasteland: He is capable of spreading GRB particles, which turn Digimon into stronger, more violent versions of themselves. After being sealed within Gammamon and before leaving the Digital World, he left behind a small stain of GRB particles. Said stain proceeds to infect the entire Digital World in the span of a year, forcing many Digimon to migrate to the Human World and turning those who remain into savage monsters.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He claims to Quantumon that he came from a distant planet where "the Endbringer" devoured it and will destroy humanity in 2,000 years so he's creating an army of infected Digimon to combat it. By his tone however, it's implied he was lying to convince Quantumon to place her trust in the protagonists that they will ensure human relations.
  • World-Healing Wave: In the finale, after being beaten into submission by Gammamon, he produces "medicine" for the GRB factor that takes the form of waves of white light that flow across the Digital World from Gammamon's hands.
  • Wrecked Weapon: During his battle with his good half, both Regulusmon shield and tail spike end up being destroyed.
  • Wrong Context Magic: Traditionally, a Dark Evolution has the Digimon or their human partner become overwhelmed with negative emotions and having said Digimon turn into a rampaging monster. On the other hand, GulusGammamon can hardly even be called a Evolution in the typical sense, being a completely different Digimon who emerges from Gammamon whenever he likes to. Depending on if he's being honest, this may be because he's an alien and thus abides by different rules than everyone else.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He nearly wipes out the protagonist's party after they try to stop him from escaping in episode 13. The only thing stopping that from happening is Hiro rushing in to stop him, doing so forces GulusGammamon to flashback to the memory of Bokomon's similar moment of Taking the Bullet for him, and reverting him back to regular Gammamon. His later appearances have him try to avoid harming the heroes whenever possible, instead trying to get Hiro to sync with him, even if Hiro would rather not. In episode 66 he is absolutely furious with Hiro for his deception in finally syncing, which was all a Batman Gambit to free Canoweissmon from his Demonic Possession. Regulusmon goes straight after the boy, forcing Siriusmon to intervene. Furthermore in the following episode he attacked Hiro when he was in Gammamon's mental world, once he caught on to his ruse in impersonating his good counterpart, and it is implied that he would have devoured Hiro too, if he had failed to bring Gammamon from the brink of erasure.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Regulusmon's shield gets cracked by a point-blank shot from WezenGammamon's Albion and is then destroyed outright by Canoweissmon's Gran Nova.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: The Jet-Black Champion warns Hiro he will synch with him, whether he wants to or not. Sooner or later, they will face an opponent that leaves them no alternative, chuckling it's "only a matter of time". Eventually, Hiro does...only for him to split him away from Gammamon rather than ordering him to kill BloomLordmon.
