  • Consensus was to focus on the juxtaposition of innocent beauty/tragedy (akin to The Ophelia) and limit to the examples where a bad thing does happen to her, so rewrite the description as necessary. The Sandbox.Unrequited Tragic Maiden sandbox can be used for this.

    Original post
Note: This thread was proposed by Synchronicity.

Unrequited Tragic Maiden is a trope I admit to being fascinated by (to the point that two of the entries on Sandbox.Unrequited Tragic Wick Check were written by me). I have always interpreted it as a beautiful, ingenue-type woman who meets a sad end in pursuit of a man she can't have, and this is an idea that's shows up in 'classic' stories: from several tragic Greek nymphs (e.g. Clytie, Echo, Oenone) to more modern fairy tales like Giselle and The Little Mermaid.

No matter how painful her yearning for love is, the Unrequited Tragic Maiden never truly achieves her happily ever after with the one she loves. She endures it all with a sad smile and is often reduced to a tragic fate. She is the poster child of Unrequited Love. In the end, she will often sacrifice herself or her happiness to make sure her beloved is happy.

However, during the Image Pickin' discussion and subsequent Trope Talk thread I realized that a lot of on page examples don't mention the tragic fate: several of them are just "her crush doesn't like her back". The wick check appears to support this: while a good number of wicks (30%) have the maiden commit suicide, sacrifice herself, or turn evil, and some (10%) mention tragedy that happens as a result of the unrequited love even if it's not to her, almost half (46%) just talk about a woman's unreciprocated feelings. Yes, they may be sad for a time and look pretty while mourning their doomed romance, but the girls in the latter category make it out of the story okay. Functionally, this trope is just a list of women with unrequited loves.

Note: Despite the name, tragedy doesn't appear to have been a requirement in the original TLP, which just focuses on a sweet girl pining away. (Not that the examples in the wick check make a big deal of the woman's sweet personality, anyway.)

But is 'woman has unrequited love' by itself tropeworthy? On either end, I think the concepts that are are:

  • Remove the maiden requirement and turn it into "tragic unrequited love" (+rename, of course). This may already be covered by other tropes such as Love Hurts, Unrequited Love Lasts Forever, etc
  • Focus on the juxtaposition of innocent beauty/tragedy (akin to The Ophelia) and limit to the examples where a bad thing does happen to her

Wick check:

This wick check aims to determine if tragedy is a necessary factor for Unrequited Tragic Maiden.

Results:

  • Girl has unrequited love, meeds sad fate: 15/50 or 30%
  • Girl has unrequited love, doesn't meet sad fate, but the love is still tragic: 5/50 or 10%
  • Girl has unrequited love but turns out ok besides that: 23/50 or 46%
  • ZCE/Other: 7/50 or 14%

Potholes are in bold, my commentary in bolded gold

Girl has unrequited love, meets sad fate (15/50)

  1. Characters.Ano Hana The Flower We Saw That Day: Played With. She suffers a tragic death right after hearing Jintan deny having a crush on her. In reality, he returned her feelings while she was alive, and still liked her even when she was a ghost.
  2. Characters.A Song Of Ice And Fire House Dayne: Invoked. Ashara was a great beauty from a noble family whose suicide got the rumormongers going, and one of the more long-lived in-universe theories is that she killed herself after a ill-fated dalliance with a Stark brother. They even get to Catelyn, Ned's eventual wife, who was so hurt by said rumors that she confronted Ned about it and in response he forbade mention of Ashara within Winterfell. Disclaimer: I wrote this entry
  3. Characters.Danganronpa 3 Future Arc: For a guy who is so rough around the edges, Sakakura fits shockingly well in the long run. He loves Munakata deeply but knows he can't have his romantic love, would rather step aside and give Yukizome the chance, suffers enormously for such feelings (even if he shows it in very different ways than the standard trope), and ends up dying in a terribly tragic manner to, among other things, protect his beloved.
  4. Characters. The Dresden Files The Fae: painful path through adulthood is all the sadder because she had everything going for her- courage, good looks, a loving family, and significant magical talent- before she tried to pursue a man who categorically refuses to have any romantic feelings for her. Which would have been fine if she had accepted his rejection, but she kept false hope that she could somehow change his mind over the years, and became deeper and deeper entrenched in her angst. Then he went the way of all mentors, and it shattered her, more than it would have if she only saw him as a teacher. Naturally, she becomes a Lady of Winter, a fae Court that empowers its leaders to fight great battles and survive impossible odds...if they can first let go of its temptation to care only about what they want.
  5. Characters. The Duchess With An Empty Soul: Sally's loyalty to Gaspal is revealed to be due to a unrequited crush on him, one that he is implied to have manipulated just so he can control her. A little light on 'sad fate'
  6. Characters.Fire Emblem Gaiden Celicas Party: If she dies, her death quote implies that her last thoughts are of her love for Abel, her sister Est's husband.
  7. Characters.Round The Twist: She needs a husband so that she can replenish her kingdom's dwindling race, so her failure to win Pete over has some serious consequences.
  8. Characters.Supernatural Hunters: She crushes badly on Dean in Season 2, but she seems to have gotten over it (mostly) by Season 5 before making her Heroic Sacrifice but he still gives her a chaste but romantic goodbye kiss.
  9. Characters.Tearmoon Empire: He has whiffs of being a Gender-Inverted example, unable to act on his feelings for Mia because a) she's already a couple with Abel, and b) he could never throw away his responsibilities as a future king for her. Tiona even encourages him to say something, rather than wallow. It's defied when Mia forces him to confess so she can properly reject him, knowing from experience that silently pining is not a good approach to romance (and that continuous heartbreak will potentially make him a target for the Chaos Serpents' manipulation), and tells him that he'll find someone worthier of his love. She ends up being right, as he goes on to fall for Tiona. Tragedy is brought up as a reason to confess
  10. Characters.Whale Star The Gyeongseong Mermaid: Fitting for the main character in this retelling of The Little Mermaid. The kind and cute Su-a realizes that Uihyeon loves her, but he will always love Joseon more, so she undertakes a Suicide Mission in his place so he can live. Disclaimer: I wrote this entry
  11. Main.Defied Trope: Kagome Higurashi from Inuyasha openly defies Unrequited Tragic Maiden and Love Makes You Evil. When she's told repeatedly by The Baby that her feelings for Inuyasha are completely one-sided and she's selfish for even thinking he can love her back, that he'll never love her like he loved Kikyou and that she must pull a Face–Heel Turn, she ultimately tells him that yes, she is jealous of Kikyou and she is aware that Kikyou will always be important to Inuyasha... but that said circumstances do NOT invalidate HER own feelings, and no one has right to tell her otherwise. And then she rejects the Baby's FHT offer. I *guess* being turned evil is tragic?
  12. Main.Despair Gambit: * In Inuyasha, the Baby tried this on Kagome by giving her very cruel breaking lectures that hit her where it hurts the most for her: her love for Inuyasha, her insecurities towards Kikyou, and her fear of becoming Inuyasha's Unrequited Tragic Maiden. It almost works, but Kagome decides that even if her thoughts on Inuyasha and Kikyou are muddled, they're hers and the Baby has nothing to do with them, leading to a mix of Anguished Declaration of Love and Shut Up, Hannibal!.
  13. Main.Matchmaker Crush: In the opera La Gioconda, the main character Gioconda is in love with the rebel Enzo. However, he's in love with the noblewoman Laura, who saved Gioconda and her mother at the beginning. Gioconda decides to repay her debt to Laura by helping her escape from her loveless marriage and get together with Enzo, even giving her life to do so.
  14. Theatre.Rusalka: Rusalka, who cannot bring herself to kill the Prince even after he betrays her, and ends up condemned to be a death spirit.
  15. YMMV.The Heroes Of Olympus, The Woobie entry: Calypso, who's basically a deconstruction of the Unrequited Tragic Maiden. It's not enough that she lives in complete isolation, but the gods make a point of her by turning her into a "Leave Your Quest" Test. Men are sent to her, all of whom will leave her eventually, but only once she's fallen in love with them, and once they leave they can never return. This has happened countless times over millennia. Luckily, she's thrown a bone by the end of the series, when Leo falls in love with her and uses a loophole to get her off Ogygia. Has a happy fate eventually, but is condemned to unrequited love and isolation for a long time

Girl has unrequited love, doesn't meet a tragic fate, but the situation is still sad somehow (5/50)

  1. Characters.Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden, Star-Crossed Lovers entry: Firuka believed herself to be Hagas' Unrequited Tragic Maiden, and it pained her immensely. Then, Tegu explained that Hagas did return her feelings, but couldn't tell her because he was very aware of his own upcoming death...]] Tragedy, but not for her!
  2. FanDisservice.Visual Novels, Katawa Shoujo entry: Perhaps most disservicely of all, in Shizune's route, the players finally get their long-wished-for Misha sex scene! Except... she is very distressed during and after it, it hurts like Hell for her, Hisao only agrees to go through with it out of pity, they both regret it afterwards, it happened while Hisao was already going out with Shizune, it turns out that Misha wasn't even attracted to Hisao and only had sex with him because she desired comfort due to being upset about Shizune not returning her feelings, and the whole thing leads to Shizune's heart-breaking Bad End. Ouch. Bad stuff happens, but not to the UTW?
  3. Literature. The Figurehead: Ignoring, for a moment, that the mermaid is a bit of a Stalker with a Crush and responsible for the entire crew's death, she does draw pity for just how desperate she is for the figurehead to acknowledge her and for the audience's certainty that that desperation is all her love will get her.
  4. WhatAnIdiot.Anime And Manga (Case Closed Entry)
** One case revolves around a judo champion and friend of Eri killing her husband because he was having an affair with the wife of a close friend of theirs, and his wife's crush for years. When Eri solves the case and tells her that her husband likely had the affair to get some attention from his wife, the wife sees the issue.
You'd Expect: The husband to have realized what a stupid idea it is to have an affair with the wife of a good friend, and specially just to get the attention of his own wife who once crushed hard on the lady's husband, but was self-respectful enough not to pursue it. He was an adult and he should've spoken to his wife about something this important to their relationship.
Instead: He had the affair and made it pretty obvious that he was having an affair by having matches from a restaurant where he met the woman easily visible in their home and using easy-to-see-through methods to give himself a reason for coming home late. And he ended up infuriating his wife so much, specially because said affair broke off the other guy's once genuinely happy marriage, that she snapped and ultimately killed him. Kills her own husband
  5. YMMV.The Inbetweeners, Misaimed Fandom entry: While Simon is meant to be sympathized with, the show also goes out of its way to demonstrate that his Dogged Nice Guy tendencies are misguided and ultimately more a display of his immaturity and selfishness than any real kind of romanticism. Despite this, many fans take them at face value and embrace Simon as a male Unrequited Tragic Maiden that the universe is unreasonably cruel to rather than the fallible Jerk with a Heart of Gold who is more often than not his own worst enemy that he actually is. Putting this here because it does try to distinguish UTW from other unrequited love situations with extra sadness/tragedy, though unclear as to what

Girl has unrequited love, no mention of tragic fate (23/50)

  1. Anime.Thumbelina: A Rare Male Example in Gekoo. He is absolutely adorable, has a tender heart, falls head over heels for Thumbelina, and never has the slightest chance because she already loves the prince. She realizes it all and rejects him very gently.
  2. Characters.BBC Robin Hood: Downplayed but still fits the trope. Although Kate does get a Relationship Upgrade with Robin, it becomes painfully clear by the final episode that he's not anywhere near as invested in the pairing as she is, never living up to The Lost Lenore that is Marian.
  3. Characters.Devil May Cry Heroes: Before the Nightmare shows she has a fairly transparent crush on Dante that he doesn't return and their lifestyles keep them apart regardless.
  4. Characters.Epica Album Series: As is evident in "The Haunting (Somewhere In Time)", she'll never mean as much to Ariel as Helena did.
  5. Characters.Fire Emblem Awakening First Generation Females: She's in love with Chrom and is hurting badly over it, but will never say anything because she's sure it'll never work out. The game mechanics don't even let you pair them! In a subversion, unlike the standard UTM, she can fall in love with other men. In the Bad Future, however, Severa mistakenly thought she was still one of these...
  6. Characters.Fire Emblem Heroic Archetypes: Or Lord. Whatever first love feelings they had, the game itself will go out of its way to make sure it'll never happen, so their best bet is just Second Love.
  7. Characters.Full Metal Panic Main Characters: Tessa, as much as she'd hate to admit, had basically lost the Love Triangle even before she entered it. Surprisingly, she ends up letting go quite readily once Sousuke can finally articulate his feelings (or lack thereof), accepting that they're Better as Friends and later referring to it as her "make-believe love affair".
  8. Characters.Harvey Beaks: : Played for laughs. Foo couldn't be more ignorant of her advances if he tried.
  9. Characters. Its Curtains: She's been pining for B-ko and thinks she can't ever get her love on her own.
  10. Characters. In Another World With My Smartphone Main Characters: For a few minutes. After sparring with Yae, Hilda calls her Touya's "knight" and Yae corrects her and states that Touya is her fiance. Hilda's heart instantly breaks, until Yae tells her she knows exactly how she feels, because Yae felt the exact same way when Touya became engaged to Yumina. Yae then suggests that Hilda and the rest of the girls have a little chat...
  11. Characters.Lobo: Lobo's exploits often leave her behind and down, nevertheless, she's always front and center for him.
  12. Characters. The Nightmare Before Christmas: Seems to think she's this, as evidenced by her song, where she openly says she isn't "the one" for Jack. However, it's proven wrong when Jack does reciprocate her feelings after all.
  13. Characters.Sailor Moon Main Cast, Celibate Hero entry: Well, Heroine: In the anime she's the only one of the guardians who has never had a romantic interest, nor shown any interest in either sex. In the manga and Crystal, on the other hand, it's implied that she has a slight crush on King Endymion but can't reveal her feelings under any circumstances for obvious reasons. The (first set of) Musicals canonize this, giving her a duet with Queen Beryl over their shared unrequited feelings, Onna no Ronsou. (Women's Depute)
  14. Characters.Spice And Wolf: Like Holo she fell in love with a human being a long time ago, and he reciprocated that love... until he discovered her true deity form and rejected her.
  15. Characters. This Is A Wild Game Of Survival: Her crush on Joon-yeong is... not written in the stars to say the least.
  16. Characters.Tom Sawyer 2000: After Tom dumps her, Amy can very easily be seen as this. At least she does later find happiness with Huck.
  17. Fanfic.Goin Kaboom: Katie is heartbroken when Danny admits he doesn't return her affections.
  18. Film. The Magnificent Ambersons: Old Maid: Fanny, mixed with Unrequited Tragic Maiden due to her crush on Eugene. May be an argument that remaining unmarried is a 'tragic' fate in some societies like this one...
  19. Literature.South Of The Border West Of The Sun: Izumi does not take Hajime's cheating well.
  20. Main.Dogged Nice Guy: Surprisingly, Henry (of all people) from Fire Emblem: Awakening can potentially become this if the player makes him develop feelings for Cordelia, who has been in love with Chrom for a long time. He even openly admits it in their S support:
  21. Main.Unrequited Love Tropes: She's hopelessly in love with a man she can never be with
  22. Manga.Shigurui (Foregone Conclusion entry): Long story short, the ronin kidnaps the main character (Goisagi)'s unrequited love interest (who moves to Sunpu castle to be closer to Goisagi, although she shortly realizes that living under Tadanaga wasn't a good idea) with the help of ninjas, and appears after the tournament, killing Yukinosuke. After fighting with Goisagi, the tournament's other Gennosuke (see below) catches the ronin, but after a Literal Disarming lets him go and escapes the castle, but gets hunted shortly after without fighting Goisagi I'm not really sure what happens to the girl...
  23. YMMV.Fire Emblem Fates, Abandon Shipping entry: Worse still is that in the previous game a DLC map had a conversation between an Unrequited Tragic Maiden and her crush, but Cordelia didn't have the conversation with Chrom if she was married.

    ZCE/Other (7/50)

  1. Characters.Candy Candy: Believes that she is this to Archie. She's wrong.
  2. Characters.Case Closed People From Notable Cases: Shouko Utakura may be one of the most tragic cases in the whole franchise.
  3. Characters.Encanto The Family Madrigal: Dolores is Spanish for "sorrows", and she has been prophesized to be an Unrequited Tragic Maiden.
  4. Characters.School Days: In the endings where she does not lose her sanity or she is not a manipulator she can end up becoming this, in the anime this is played straight for a long time before the end where she loses her sanity again. No context for unrequited love
  5. Characters.Slasher Guilty Party: Depending on the viewer, she can be sympathetic. Though she gave the first blow to Talvinder, her death is slow, and she is the first of the counselor group to die. No context for unrequited love.
  6. Characters.Tales Of Innocence: All three wicks are ZCE
  7. Characters.Weiss Reacts Teams CFVY And MLDY, Genre Savvy entry: She also realises that Tharja does not have the same role as her, being closer to an Unrequited Tragic Maiden than Velvet. How?

Paging ~Synchronicity to the thread.

Anyway, due to the two proposed options mentioning other tropes, I'm concerned whether at least the first one would result in redundancy, so I wonder if disambiguating would be a good idea.

Acknowledging the ping, but don’t actually have a strong preference myself. At 221 wicks it won’t be too big of a job either way.
