Main Leads

Han Gyeong-su

  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Instead of staying enemies with Na-yeon, they grow to become friends and even more.
  • Almost Kiss: Nearly kisses Na-yeon on the field trip.
  • Battle Couple: Hasn't quite gotten there with Na-yeon yet, but they always have each other's backs when fighting zombies.
  • Heroic BSoD: After coming face to face with I-sak's zombie, he is so stunned that he's not much use for the rest of the chase.
  • Nice Guy: Just an all-around good guy
  • Raised by Grandparents: His grandmother had to take over raising him thanks to his parents' irresponsibility.

Lee Na-yeon

  • Action Girl: As much as she needs to be, but much more useful than she was in canon.
  • Adaptational Badass: Canon!Na-yeon has nothing on this girl, who herself is surprised by her usefulness to her group.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: Much kinder than her canon counterpart.
  • Almost Kiss: With Gyeong-su.
  • Battle Couple: Hasn't quite gotten there with Gyeong-su yet, but they always have each other's backs when fighting zombies.
  • Birds of a Feather: Turns out to be this with Mi-jin of all people.
  • Fiery Redhead: Becoming a better person does not take away her short temper. Plus she has auburn hair.
  • Hidden Depths: Is a lot more useful and kinder than people think. She's also quite insecure about her lack of friends thanks to the lack of love she receives from the adults in her life.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Big time.
  • Trophy Child: The only reason her parents had a child at all.

Bathroom Kids

Jang Ha-ri

  • Action Girl: Amazing with a bow and arrow.
  • Adaptational Relationship Overhaul: Here, Gwi-nam is determined to kill her.
  • Aloof Archer: Not too emotional (except when it comes to her brother) and an archery prodigy.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Goes from fighting with Ha-ri on the first night to having sex with her in a bathroom stall in the matter of hours.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Absolutely refuses to let Woo-jin die in the apocalypse. Too bad she hasn't been able to find him yet.
  • Cool Big Sis: Comforts Woo-jin after he learns he was an accident. She even snuggles with him despite not liking touch very much. Both siblings have a lot of happy memories of their relationship.
  • Hereditary Homosexuality: Gay while Woo-jin is bi. She is shocked when she walks in on him and Joon-yeong and thinks long and hard about how they'll both eventually lose their parents.
  • I Will Find You: Towards Woo-jin. She eventually grows frustrated as she manages to find three of the Class 2-5 kids... and her brother isn't one of them.
  • Knight Templar Big Sister: Na-yeon notes that most siblings would not be as determined to save their younger siblings as her. It is apparent that she's more protective of him than most would be, with her being protective of him for longer than she can remember. She even says that she'll be unable to keep going should Woo-jin die, and that she'd sacrifice anything for him. Even her poor prospects for her future would pale in comparison to losing Woo-jin as far as she's concerned.
  • Not So Above It All: Has sex with Mi-jin when four other kids are sleeping a few feet away from them. Several times.
  • Poor Communication Kills:
    • When berating Woo-jin over his gross milk carton habits, fails to actually mention that she's talking about the milk until after he starts crying. She'd forgotten that she walked in on her brother and his boyfriend not long ago and made herself sound quite homophobic.
    • Being as protective as she is over him, doesn't want to burden him with how much stress she's under, leaving him to believe she has the preferable spot in the family, being the favorite, which strains their relationship.
  • The Stoic
  • Strict Parents Make Sneaky Kids: Her parents refused to let her have any fun, lest it take away from her archery training. The straw that breaks the camel's back is refusing to let her go to a fair that her brother is allowed to go to. She begins sneaking out through the fire escape by her window in order to have some fun in her life.
  • True Companions: With Min-jae, who made her life a lot easier.

Park Mi-jin

Jung Min-jae

  • Big Damn Heroes: When all seems lost for Ha-ri, he manages to shoot Gwi-nam with an arrow and save her at the last second.
  • True Companions: The person Ha-ri cares about most behind Woo-jin. Always goes into depth about their friendship with one another and how he made her stressful life easier
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Min-jae has no idea of Ji-min's feelings for Na-yeon, and has no idea of the potentially terrible effect that telling the girl of Na-yeon's blossoming relationship with Gyeong-su might bring.

Yoo Joon-seong

  • Adaptational Badass: His original character was already surprisingly brave in sacrificing himself for Mi-jin. Here, he chooses to stay behind for the entire group and distracts Gwi-nam while the others escape, provoking him into attacking him.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Since his group doesn't reunite with Class 2-5 that night, he doesn't sacrifice himself at that point. He later chooses to stay behind so he isn't The Load and to distract Gwi-nam and the other zombies so that they can get out.

Class 2-5

Lee Cheong-san

Nam On-jo

Lee Su-hyeok

Choi Nam-ra

Kim Ji-min

  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Zombies may be very real, but a half-zombie half-human is still a hard pill for her to swallow.
  • Armoured Closet Gay: Is terrified of anyone, specifically her homophobic parents, learning that she is a lesbian and ruins her friendship with Na-yeon to ensure that no one else does.
  • Aesop Amnesia: She does everything in her power to keep Gyeong-su and Na-yeon from getting together only to get with Na-yeon herself... and then she ruins it because she's not ready to be in a relationship with a girl. And then Ji-min makes up with Na-yeon just as the latter's verging on a Relationship Upgrade with Gyeong-su again. Ji-min is not happy about this.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Begins acting more irrational towards Gyeong-su as her feelings for Na-yeon grow.
  • Did Not Get the Girl: Ruins her relationship with Na-yeon, whose feelings for Gyeong-su are now growing.
  • Does Not Like Men: Some of her internal monologue is just straight-up dogging on men as a whole, not understanding how anyone could be attracted to boys, and generalizing them as the traits she most dislikes about them.
  • Freudian Excuse: Her family is extremely homophobic and would not take kindly to her sexuality or her losing her virginity to Na-yeon.
  • Gayngst: The character to get the most of this, not accepting her own sexuality until not long before Sun, Sea And Alcoholic Decisions. She is very aware of her parents' bigotry but unlike Ha-ri and Woo-jin, has a very loving relationship with her parents, which makes the possibility of losing them worse, but also gives her hope of eventually changing their minds on LGBT people. She also ruins her relationship with Na-yeon to hide her sexuality.
  • Jerkass: Is outright cruel to Dae-su and other boys as well as Na-yeon, even believing that her former friend might out her as petty revenge for the fight Ji-min started.
  • Opposites Attract Revenge: When she sees Na-yeon and Gyeong-su getting close, she does everything in her power to sabotage any burgeoning feelings between them. After learning from Min-jae that those extinguised feelings have developed during their time in the apocalypse, it quickly becomes apparent that Ji-min hasn't learned her lesson just yet.
  • Romantic Runner-Up: Could have been in an Official Couple with Na-yeon, but ruined her own chances, so Na-yeon's affections eventually returned to Gyeong-su.
  • Spared By Adaptation: Does not die after leaving Hyo-ryung.

Yang Dae-su

  • Berserker Tears: Sobs uncontrollably when beating the zombie that almost killed Woo-jin to a pulp.
  • Cassandra Truth: No one believes him when he says he had sex before.
  • Hidden Depths: A buffoon. But a top tier best friend to Woo-jin, and determined to make him comfortable when he accidentally comes out to him.
  • Innocently Insensitive: When describing what he thinks Ji-min must be feeling towards Gyeong-su, he's unaware that he's almost perfectly describing Woo-jin's feelings towards Joon-yeong.
  • Matchmaker Failure: Wants to be a 'Love Doctor' but every attempt to do so goes hilariously wrong,
  • Shipper on Deck: For Ji-min and Gyeong-su, and later, Woo-jin and Joon-yeong.
  • Undying Loyalty: Towards Woo-jin. Doesn't care at all about his sexual orientation and beats up the zombie that almost kills him.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Realizes that Ji-min is jealous when she sees Gyeong-su and Na-yeon getting close... and thinks she has a crush on Gyeong-su.

Jang Woo-jin

  • Armoured Closet Gay: Due to his parents' rampant homophobia, is convinced that anyone finding out about his sexuality, even his best friend and his sister, will end poorly for him and lead to the end of that relationship. He's terrified when he accidentally does tell Dae-su.
  • Cry into Chest: Does this to Dae-su after revealing he's bisexual.
  • Gayngst: Knows that he is going to lose his parents over his sexuality and terrified of losing his friends and sister as well.
  • The Heart: When you really think about this, he serves this purpose, being Ha-ri's main motivation and the person she loves most. Dae-su is also extremely loyal to him and Joon-yeong falls in love with him immediately after meeting him. To all three of them, him dying is the worst thing imaginable. Also, everyone quarantining with him throw peaches at the bastard soldier for being unsympathetic to him crying.
  • Hereditary Homosexuality: Both him and Ha-ri are attracted to the same sex and both know they're set to be disowned when their parents find out.
  • A Mistake Is Born: Wasn't meant to be conceived.
  • Parental Neglect: Is ignored by his parents.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Dae-su thinks he looks a lot like Ha-ri when he's angry.
  • Surprise Pregnancy: Was one himself and causes a lot of insecurity for him. Also, most likely the father of Hee-su's baby, which he has no idea about.
  • The Unfavorite: Outright acknowledges that his parents don't care about him much because they would rather focus on Ha-ri.

Oh Joon-yeong

  • Big Damn Kiss: Plants one on Woo-jin. It was a long time coming.
  • It's All My Fault: When most of the zombies are killed in the Yangdong fight, Joon-yeong, who'd stayed by Woo-jin's side throughout it, walks away to help Dae-su up. Soon after, Woo-jin is attacked by the last remaining zombie and breaks his wrist in the process, only surviving thanks to On-jo. As a result, Joon-yeong is guilt-ridden, believing he could have prevented his boyfriend from getting hurt and that he could have stopped the zombie from getting so close to biting Woo-jin had Joon-yeong stayed by his side.
  • Love at First Sight: Was enamored with Woo-jin from the moment he saw him... which was when they were twelve. He debates whether it actually was this, as his mother always warned against it, but is sure that he's in love after a few months of friendship.
  • Patient Childhood Love Interest: Waited for years before confessing his feelings.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: Is observant enough to realize a lot of his classmates’ secrets. Notably that Ji-min is into girls and that Su-hyeok has a crush on Nam-ra.

Yoon I-sak

  • Incompatible Orientation: With Joon-yeong.
  • Unrequited Tragic Maiden: Her crush on Joon-yeong is... not written in the stars to say the least. A month after being rejected, she dies and Joon-yeong doesn't grieve her or think much of how she had feelings for him.

Kim Min-ji

  • Hidden Depths: Ms. Park considers her more trustworthy than her peers when it comes to underage drinking. She's one of the key players in obtaining the alcohol.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: In the present, dies before the story picks up. In flashbacks, she isn't given much focus either.

Park Hee-su

Other Characters

Ms. Park

  • Cool Teacher: Is this for her students.
  • Heroic BSoD: Is absolutely devastated when Ji-min abandons Hyo-ryung and is presumed dead.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Finally takes up her colleague's offer for one after the sprinkler system is set off.
  • Mama Bear: Considers all the Class 2-5 kids her 'babies'. She tries to get Ji-min to come back after she runs into the woods.
