Summary

Discard and Draw, a trope about losing then gaining new powers, has a confusing trope name, and as a result is being consistently misused as a card game trope that describes "with card effect or game mechanics, discard cards from your hand, then draw cards from your deck".

Wick Check

  • Correct Usage: Losing a power to gain a new one.
  • Incorrect Usage: In a card game, an effect causes the player to discard cards from their hand and draw new cards from the deck.

    All Checked Wicks

  • MagicTheGathering.Color Tropes (Incorrect)
    • Discard and Draw: Red cards that allow the player to draw more cards tend to have the cost of discarding cards in the player's hand. While Blue has this ability as well, they also go in different order: Red discards first and then draws, while Blue does the opposite. (Additionally, Blue also has a ton of plain old "Draw more cards", which Red never has.)

  • Fanfic.The Heart Of A Hero (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: Villainous example: Kashiko may have had Kendo beaten out of her, but she quickly replaces her with Tetsutetsu and Ibara.

  • Characters.Final Fantasy XIV Melee Classes (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: "Meisui" dispels the "Suiton" buff to give the Ninja enough Ninki for a single use of "Hellfrog Medium", "Bhavacakra", or "Bunshin".

  • VideoGame.Pac Man 99 (Correct)
    • Train doubles the number of ghosts added to the ghost train when touching a sleeping ghost. However, touching a sleeping ghost while Train is active also adds an extra Jammer Pac-Man to the queue, which can be suicidal at later stages.

  • TabletopGame.Smash Up (Incorrect)
    • Discard and Draw: The Wizards have an action that resets your entire hand.
      • A Zombie base also have the winner reset their hand but they still get 5 VPs at the same time.
      • The Mages' power-2 minions have you discard a card and draw a new one.
      • The Russian Fairy Tales' Mass Transformation is a very crippling action that has all players trash their entire hand and draw a whole new hand of cards.

  • Characters.Kan Colle Six (Correct)
    • Lethal Joke Item: The Ro.44 Seaplane Fighter. First introduced as January 2016 ranking reward, it's a seaplane that was intended as a fighter aircraft. However, true to their historical plane, they comes with a very poor stat, to the point that even a regular Zuiun is comparatively far superior. It was initially regarded as a Joke Item as they behaved similarly to seaplane bombers, until the next update reclassified it as proper fighter planes and allow it to be equipped on the Nagato and Yamato-class. Still a poor aircraft nevertheless, but they no longer participate in air bombing phase, thus increasing their survivabilities at the expense of their functionality as artillery spotters, allowing your fleet to reliably secure air supremacy and enable artillery shelling in maps that otherwise denied any air power to both sides.

  • Characters.Marvel Comics Gamma Mutates (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: Betty initially started out as a normal human love interest. Then she was mutated by MODOK into a Harpy-like gamma mutant who could fly and fire energy blasts. She was eventually cured. After being poisoned by the Abomination, Betty is revived by the Leader and MODOK as the Red She-Hulk and she is granted the same abilities as Hulk and She-Hulk as well as the ability to absorb energy like the Red Hulk. Bruce's "Doc Green" persona depowered her. As of Immortal Hulk, Betty now has a gamma form resembling the Harpy form but now red.

  • DarthWiki.Pokemon Spirit And Shadow (Correct)

  • Characters. The Rising Of The Shield Hero Naofumi Iwatani (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: After losing the Shield to Tact, temporarily wields Trash's Seven Star weapon, the Cane. Then he trades the Cane for his Shield before sending all Tact's stolen legendary weapons to new owners.

  • Characters.Kamen Rider Zero One Aruto Hiden (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: The Progrise Hopper Blade causes MetalCluster Hopper to restrict the ability to use the Cluster Cells, which were so powerful that Zero-One only needed to stand still and they would do all the fighting for him. In exchange, however, he gains a shapeshifting weapon that possesses enough destructive power to bring Thouser to his knees, while also having other uses for defensive and utility purpose to aid him in battle (i.e shield with varying size, a distraction or footholds for airborne battle.) and can turn Magia back into their normal HumaGear form.

  • Roleplay.Veritable (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: Between Sayaka and Homurcifer, Homura loses most of her post-Madoka wish power set. Then Homurcifer injects her with some of her own magic. The result is Homura effectively being converted back to her pre-Madoka wish powers.

  • TabletopGame.Killer Bunnies And The Quest For The Magic Carrot (Incorrect)
    • Discard and Draw:
      • Geneva Convention forces a player to discard all their weapons and refill their hand from the deck.
      • Cool Change lets the player discard and draw some or all of their hand.
      • Run Amok gets rid of a player's top and bottom run cards.

  • Characters.Kingdom Rush Towers (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: They lose armour compared to Knights, but gain a ranged attack and much higher damage output.

  • Characters.Kamen Rider Saber Megid (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: The final Sibling Ahiru Megid loses its invisibility powers, but attains all the ones possessed by its brothers in exchange.

  • Characters.Hunger Games Simulation Lore Tributes (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: She exchanges her fire powers for enhanced swimming and underwater breathing when she's a sea goat and for Grass-type moves when she's a Gogoat.

  • Characters.Dungeons And Dragons Classes Fifth Edition Classes (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: Every level, artificers can replace one of their known cantrips and infusions with a new one, invoking this trope.
    • Discard and Draw:
    • The Martial Versatility feature they get from Tasha's enables them to switch out their fighting style whenever they get an ASI.
    • Using a magic ritual, a ranger can replace one type of primal beast with another. When the new one arrives, the old one vanishes.

  • Fanfic.Resurgence (Correct)

  • Fanfic.Persephones Waltz (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: Instead of healing Kyosuke, Sayaka wished to find Madoka, exchanging her usual healing powers for extrasensory abilities.

  • VideoGame.Tak 2 The Staff Of Dreams (Correct)

  • Characters.Avatar The Last Airbender Zuko (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: After his Heel–Face Turn, Zuko temporarily loses his ability to bend because he has let go of the anger and hate that used to power his fire. Learning the original form of firebending from the Dragons, where fire is powered by drive and energy, allows him to regain his bending in a much stronger and stable form, to the point where he becomes a match for his Child Prodigy sister.

  • Characters.Kamen Rider Drive Roidmudes (Correct)

  • Characters.Devil May Cry Dante (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: Happens three separate times during 5. He briefly is playable with Rebellion as his standard weapon, but as we see in the prologue, it gets shattered by Urizen. After that, for a few missions, he uses Sparda, his father's sword, which plays identically to Rebellion. After that, he fuses the power of Rebellion and Sparda to create a brand new sword drawn from Dante's own demonic power (that is even named after him). This is the sword he keeps for the remainder of the game, and Swordmaster style permanently changes (the Style attack button summons energy swords while all of the Swordmaster style abilities have been remapped elsewhere.) After beating the game, the player can use any of the 3 swords in gameplay.

  • Characters.Big Brother 19 Alliances (Incorrect, Unrelated to Card Games)
    • Discard and Draw: Alex went from the first group of misfits to being aligned with Cody to being aligned with just Jason who both colluded with Paul.

  • MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic.Tropes C To D (Correct)

  • Characters.Justice League Other Villains (Correct)
    • Adaptational Badass: Mainstream Amazo is by no means a pushover but even the strongest version of Amazo in the comics is limited to Power Copying. He can use all of the abilities of the superbeings he encounters (barring magic) and use them all at once instead of one at a time. Here Amazo has that plus an adaptive ability that lets him constantly change, evolve, gain new abilities, and grow beyond his weaknesses. Mainsteam Amazo is at best a Physical God but here he is a straight up Reality Warper.

  • Characters.Temtem Species (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: Pupoise exchanges its Nature type for Mental when it evolves into Loatle.
    • Discard and Draw: Chubee exchanges its Wind type for Crystal when it evolves into Waspeen.

    • Discard and Draw: Since Furuno was stolen from her by Yamato Takeru, who gave it to Idaten, Takaki allows Espada to use Habaya to make up for it.

  • Characters.Sarah Kerrigan (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: Loses her Ghost abilities after becoming infested only to gain new Zerg abilities. Then loses most of her Zerg abilities but gains new psionic abilities after being exposed to the Xel'naga artifact at the end of Wings of Liberty (it's not entirely clear if the narrative intent was to show that her psionics were this powerful before infestation, or if it was another artifact from her life as the Queen of Blades). Finally, she returns to the Swarm, and picks up new Zerg abilities, and becomes re-infested during Heart of the Swarm, she picks up some entirely new Zerg abilities (which, for one mission, are required, but she can switch back to her previous abilities afterward, subverting the "discard" part of the trope).

  • VideoGame.FTL Faster Than Light (Correct)

  • Characters.Monster Verse King Ghidorah (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: As Mechagodzilla, Ghidorah trades his physical body's Gravity Beams and Healing Factor for his own version of Godzilla's atomic breath, a drill tail, a massive arsenal of inbuilt weaponry, and extremely powerful arms. While this enables him to manhandle Godzilla and Kong for the majority of the final battle, once Kong gets in a good hit with his axe, Mechagodzilla rapidly loses ground as he lacks his past identity's ability to regenerate from said wound.

  • Pantheon.Game Characters (Correct)

  • Characters.Hellsing Alucard (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: Thanks to Schrödinger nearly erasing him from existence and leaving him incorporeal for three decades, Alucard had to dispose of the millions of potential familiars he had until only Schrödinger was left. He likely can't contain and release entire armies of undead anymore (though he could potentially collect more), but on the other hand, he now has Schrödinger's power of 'being everywhere and nowhere.' He lacks his hundreds of thousands of souls, but has become the self-observing paradox that exists where and as he decides he does: 'I think, therefore I am.' While he is no longer literally a One-Man Army, he has become much more immortal and unlike his previous powers which made it difficult but not impossible to kill him, virtually nothing can hurt or kill him now.

  • Characters.Mega Man Battle Network 1 (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: He changes Navis from time time. He rotates between using FireMan, HeatMan, and FlameMan throughout the series.
    • Discard and Draw: In the second half of the series, Bass gets a complete rehaul of his combat style and abilities, abandoning his Aura and explosive techniques for all-new moves based on Dark Powernote . The only moves he keeps are firing attacks from his cannons.

  • Characters.Guardians Of The Galaxy Modern (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: Phyla is a natural Flying Brick whose other abilities have varied over the years. Initially she possessed the Nega-Bands, which allowed her to absorb energy a limited form of cosmic awareness. Both of these vanished after she acquired the Quantum Bands. Then the Quantum Bands were drained in Annihilation: Conquest, leaving her with only her strength, flight and her Quantum Sword. After her deal with Oblivion she got powers that were never truly defined before she was killed again by Thanos.

  • Fanfic.Quirk Sequencer (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: Once Izuku combines two Quirks, they're gone forever and he won't be able to combine them with another Quirk to make more Quirks. For example, he no longer has access to Explosion after using it to make Land Mine.

  • Characters.Jo Jos Bizarre Adventure Jeanpierre Polnareff (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: Trades out Silver Chariot's "too fast to be seen" speed, durable armor, and rapid cutting power for agility about on par with a normal human, being Made of Plasticine but with the ability to reattach limbs, and a lack of direct offensive power in favor of controlling the soul itself.

  • Characters.Grandmaster Of Demonic Cultivation Mo Dao Zu Shi Wei Wuxian (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: He sacrificed his cultivation powers and discovered demonic cultivation shortly afterwards. In his second life, he uses much less demonic cultivation but compensates with lower-level cultivation and talismans.

  • Characters.Special People (Correct)

  • TabletopGame.Hero Realms (Incorrect)
    • Discard and Draw: An ability of the Wild faction, allowing the player to draw a card and discard. This allows the player to move through their deck faster.

  • WebVideo. You Can Play This (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: The Negadub drains the WA☆RI☆ON powers from Justin ending the legacy of the WA☆RI☆ON... but then Justin gets the improved Rider belt (in the form of a portable Famicom system) and becomes the Famikamen Rider.

  • Characters.Rumble Roses (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: From her change as the heel Candy Cane to the face Becky, Becky lost many of her cheating attacks alongside her guitar that Candy Cane started matches with and could even perform a very powerful Lethal attack with. Becky also loses much of the humiliation factor Candy Cane made her opponent a victim of. As a trade off, Becky becomes much faster in terms of running speed and footwork, gained actual wrestling attacks, acquired many attacks that end in pinfall attempts, and uses a more practical than embarrassing to the opponent H-Move that requires less effort from Becky herself to perform, but is much safer on her end at the same time.

  • Characters.Yu Gi Oh VRAINSSOL Technologies Inc (Correct)

  • Characters.Pokemon Generation VIII Impidimp To Calyrex (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: Its Grass typing gets exchanged for Ice typing in Ice Rider form and Ghost typing in Shadow Rider form, though it does retain access to a diverse array of Grass-type moves in all forms.

  • Characters.Onimusha (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: When he is sent to the future at the beginning of 3, he loses his weapons he had in 1, but gains new ones in their place. By running the Dark Realms, you can eventually gain back the Raizan, Enryuu, and Shippuu, already conveniently at max strength.

  • Anime.Captain Earth (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: Teppei gave up his Singularity and Killtgang powers... and got a Livlaster, which can draw on Orgone energy without making the wielder evil.

  • Characters.Worm Worldwide Threats (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: His body is modular, allowing him to switch out parts to counter a specific threat.

  • Characters.Yu Gi Oh Card Game E To F (Incorrect)
    • Discard and Draw: The unique effect of Helmer draws one card and discards another.

  • LightNovel.Goblin Slayer (Correct)
    • Discard and Draw: In the second chapter, Goblin Slayer abandons his short sword after it becomes caked with blood and fat and uses the goblins' own weapons against them. He openly states that you should just take the enemy's weapon when dealing with goblins because this happens so often.

Conclusions

Discard and Draw has a consistent misuse on card game pages, where the trope is interpreted by its literal title as a trope about discarding cards and drawing new cards.

Though this misuse is very consistent and very common on card game pages, the relatively low number of card game pages on this site means that its absolute number of misuses is relatively low.

Proposals

In my opinion, the name Discard and Draw is generally unclear, and does not at all suggest the actual trope of "losing one power but gaining another"; you may figuratively "discard" your superpowers, but it's impossible to "draw" new superpowers.

Therefore, I propose a rename of the trope. I suggest "Powers Lost And Powers Gained" just to get the idea rolling.

I could also see the misused, card game focused interpretation of the trope to be made into its own trope, maybe with the "Discard And Draw" name, or maybe with the more general "Mulligan" name.

Opening. I think renaming sounds like a good idea, because it's clear that people are mistaking this for a card game trope due to the name.

As for what to call it, I don't currently have any ideas.

[nja][nja][nja][nja]!

Opening this.

As you pointed out, the actual misuse is pretty low. We generally expect a low amount of misuse for any given page (since folks who don't read descriptions are omnipresent), so I am not seeing a case for a rename, especially given 900+ wicks.

At best, I think the card game misuse can be moved to its own trope, and a "not to be confused with Discard and Draw" added to its description.

Powers Lost New Powers Gained? Lost Powers Gained New Powers? Or just Superpower Discard And Draw?

Edit: Or, yeah, since misuse level is not that high, we might consider a new card game-based discard-and-draw trope with a "Not to be confused with" blurb.

Going to agree with Synchronicity here. Misuse is pretty low, but a new trope specifically for the card game misuse might be worthwhile.

The snag I see there is that Discard and Draw is already the term used for the card-game trope we'd make, so I'm not sure what we'd name that one.

[up] In that case I could potentially be open to a rename. I say potentially because I don't think there is precedent for tropes getting renamed solely so that the old name can be used for a new trope, although I don't know because I haven't been involved in the TRS for very long.

Maybe we could do a Trope Transplant here by using the name Discard and Draw for the card game trope, and moving the original definition to a new name.

Also, it looks like I misread the amount of misuse when I opened the thread earlier. I overlooked the fact that it's as low as it is. Still, I think a Trope Transplant would be a good idea.

Old For New Powers?

New Powers Cost The Old?

...

But, most of the anime examples isn't new powers, but just better versions of the old ones?

So... A better name might draw that out?

Maybe Old Powers Lost New Powers Gained would work (it would be custom titled to have a comma between "Lost" and "New"), or maybe Power Replacement (less sure about the latter; it's shorter, but I'm not sure if it would be clear).

This is probably something to discuss separately, but I'm concerned about proposed titles creating even more confusion with Re-Power, which already has an unclear distinction and several overlapping examples. (I was going to check Re-Power sometime for a different kind of misuse resulting from its title.)

A while back I started a thread about how Re-Power and Discard and Draw are duplicate tropes but it didn't go anywhere because at the time I wasn't able to put in the effort to prove they were duplicates before the thread ran out of time. I have wanted to reopen it but I haven't gotten around to it.

Re-Power's trope description is poorly written and although I think that the difference is that Re-Power is supposed to be about changing a character's powers as part of a reimagining, that is not actually consistent with the examples on the pages or how the two tropes are being used on other pages.

I personally think that Discard and Draw should be renamed to Re-Power and Re-Power should either be deleted or renamed and rewritten to fix it being misused depending on whether or not it is determined if it actually is a distinct trope or not. This is because Re-Power's name fits better with what Discard and Draw is supposed to be about.

But as you mentioned in that thread, Re-Power sounds like the opposite of De-power. Which is why I wanted to check it for misuse for getting back the same old powers as before.

If we keep this instead of merging it with Re-Power, I thought of Superpower Swap as another name.

Still, I think the name Discard and Draw would work fine for the card game misuse if we move the proper definition elsewhere (or merge it; whichever we do).
