Pinch Me is supposed to be "You can wake up as soon as you realize that it's not real. It isn't a dream if you can't". However, most of the examples (and even the trope name) are about a character checking if they're dreaming typically by pinching themselves.

Wick check:

    open/close all folders

    Correct Usage (5/57)
  • Supergirl (2005): In Supergirl #22, Kara's dream starts to fade as soon as Lightning Lad explains that she is dreaming.
  • Home with the Fairies: The story dumps Maddie in Middle-earth. Maddie, who has no belief in magic, tries to think of a mundane explanation. A kidnapper drugged her and dumped her, but there are no tire tracks. Maddie is dreaming, but can't wake. She is in a remote part of Canada or America, but no one speaks English. Maddie is not a Flat-Earth Atheist; after finding more evidence, she accepts that she is in some fantasy world. (potholed in Agent Scully)
  • The Awkward Adventures of Meghan Whimblesby: When Meghan sees the movie characters, she tries to wake from her dream. In chapter 1, Meghan pinches herself. In chapter 2, she tries to escape danger by shouting, "WAKE UP!" Then she bleeds. Because of her blood, Meghan concludes, "I'm not dreaming."
  • Inception: Averted. Even if you are aware you're in a dream, you can't leave it unless you're given a "kick" in the real world or if you die in the dream world. The very basis is averted too, as you can still feel pain in a dream. Extreme pain, as we learn early on.
  • Minecraft: The final few lines also pull a No Ending, call back to reality and challenges the player to do better in spectacular style (potholed in Heartwarming)
...And the game was over and the player woke up from the dream. And the player began a new dream. And the player dreamed again, dreamed better. And the player was the universe. And the player was love.
    You are the player

    Misused: Dream Detection (32/57)
  • HUNT the TRUTH: [spoiler] makes [spoiler] show him the time on her datapad twice so that he can know he's not dreaming. When he learns of [spoiler], he begs her to show the datapad again as she's walking away so he confirm or deny that it's reality.
  • Happy Heroes: In episode 49, Doctor H., is excited over Miss Peach saying she's actually willing to date him, and asks Happy S. to punch him to see if he's dreaming it all up. Happy S. whops him with his Happy S. Punch.
  • Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf: In Joys of Seasons episode 2, Wolffy ends up knocking out three of the goats and is unsure if he's dreaming. He asks Weslie to hit him as hard as he can to see if he's dreaming; Weslie ends up hitting him with a big rock, launching him into the air.
  • Tamagotchi: Two instances where this happens:
    • In episode 30a, after waking up from two nightmares related to their mother in a row, Mametchi and Chamametchi pinch each other to make sure they're not dreaming a third time.
    • In Yume Kira Dream episode 11, the fictional celebrity duo D2 visits the Kira Tamamori shop and gives Yumemitchi and Kiraritchi some D2 cards. Yumemitchi and Kiraritchi pinch each other to make sure they're not dreaming, then get excited since they actually met D2 in real life.
  • Tropes L to Z: Thinking that she might be dreaming or in the Simulacra, Caroline looks twice at the bulletin board to see if an advertisement changed while she was looking away. Then she presses the pointy end of a nail against herself. Soryn notices and points out that he and at least one other person has felt pain in dreams before, so one of her dream tests is faulty.
  • A New World, A New Way: As soon as he realizes he's a Chesnaught, he punches himself. It fails, and he realizes that he really is a Chesnaught. (potholed in That Was Not a Dream)
  • Doubt Academy Mizu Roster: A pretty common tic of his. It is his way to figure out whether or not he is dreaming at the time, and he has an entire routine that does include pinching himself, among other things. It's pretty weird to watch.
  • Lelouch Of The Wings Of Rebellion Black Knights: Lelouch pinches himself to make sure he isn't dreaming the closing scene of Chapter 51. Understandable considering that [spoiler:something too good happens].
  • My Hero Academia - Other High Schools: When he sees Endeavor in a rare moment of sincerity, Yoarashi has to knock the shit out of himself to process it.
  • My Huntsman Academia Team MNVW: Izuku feels so grateful for the opportunities he's been given that he sometimes has to pinch himself as a reminder that he isn't dreaming and is in fact attending the greatest Huntsman Academy in the world despite being born a Broken Soul.
  • SC2VN: Tries this after Jett invites Mach to her team. Mach's not dreaming.
  • Waking Up From The Dream: Directly invoked while at the Saniwa Shrine. She collapses to the ground, flustered after being held at gunpoint twice and asks Ken to pinch her to make sure she isn't dreaming. Mokou tries to capitalize on this immediately, only to have it denied by Ken...at least for now, as he has not said he wants that but has also indicated that it is not undesirable.
  • Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches: The Main Couple: Right after Shiraishi says yes to become his girlfriend, he thinks it's a dream too good to be true and has to pinch his cheek to convince himself that it's real.
  • The Arithmancer: Daniel Granger pinches himself when McGonagall transforms his table into a tortoise to prove that magic exists.
  • Blue Sky: Wheatley asks Chell to touch him when they meet again to ensure she's real and he isn't seeing things.
  • Mass Vexations: Art speculates that he is in a dream upon showing up at the Citadel in the first one. He promptly slaps himself, realizing that he is, in fact, in a real world.
  • Maybe the Last Archie Story: Invoked when Reggie Mantle wonders whether he is really talking to a cat, and Salem retorts "[He's] not about to claw [Reggie's] ankle to prove [he's] not dreaming."
  • Shy Girl: Gourmet Guy slaps Taylor to prove they're real and not a hallucination.
  • The Web of The Spider-Man: After testing out his new powers in his room, Peter pinches himself to make sure he isn't dreaming. After confirming that he isn't (and that it really, really hurt), he's ready to jump for joy.
  • Under the Skin: The man played by Adam Pearson pinches himself because he can't quite believe what's happening.
  • Back to the Future: From a deleted scene, after Marty looks at the newspaper confirming that he's in 1955, an elderly woman bumps into him. What does Marty do? He asks her to pinch him to confirm that this is real. He gets a slap instead.
  • Nerd³: Dan tests if he is dreaming when he finishes off the Metal Gear RAY in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance by slapping himself.
  • Eccentric Circles: Malraux, unasked, pinches Piper to establish that it's not a dream.
  • The Institute: When Luke first wakes up in the institute and realizes he is not in his room, he comes close to pinching himself to make sure he's not dreaming, but concludes that would be a cliché. He pops his fingers against his cheeks instead.
  • K-On!: Azusa has four of these in episode 13 of season 2. Lampshaded when she asks Mugi to pinch her and near the end of the episode wondering if it was All Just a Dream. (potholed in Daydream Surprise)
  • Saki Achiga-hen: After she faints during the initial demonstration of her power, Toki checks whether she is in a dream by pinching... Ryuuka's endowment.
  • Jinji Zaiaku ? "HOLY CRAP I GOT 50% ON A TEST. C'MON, HONDA, SEE IF I'M DREAMING!"
  • The Traveling Tutor and the Librarian: When Green Grass is having his informal discussion with Princess Luna and finds out That Was Not a Dream

    Misused: Other (13/57)
Note that "pinch me" works under the assumption that it doesn't hurt in a dream, therefore "pinching oneself awake" is actually an inversion.

    ZCE's (7/57)
  • The Man: John has this moment when he first sees the Man.
  • The Seven Misfortunes of Lady Fortune: How [spoiler] reacts to [spoiler] coming back.
  • Airplane!: Ted Striker to a sailor in the Magumba Bar, when he first met Elaine. The sailor becomes visibly uncomfortable and slides away.
  • Ready Jet Go! - Bortronians: In "Zerk Visits Earth", Zerk asks Sunspot to pinch him, but not really.
  • Ready Jet Go! - Main Characters: Sean asks Sunspot to pinch him in "Space Junk", "Whole Lotta Shakin'", and in "Astronaut Ellen Ochoa". Sean doesn't actually mean it, but of course, Sunspot pinches him anyway.
  • The Land Before Time Sequel Films: At least until he sees that the nearest person is an unamused Mr. Threehorn glaring daggers at him—then he just pinches himself.
  • Moonlight Act: Gekko and Engekibu's first reactions upon meeting a character from a Japanese folktale. They take turns pinching each other... on their butts.

Sorry for the wait, ~Momochi. Opened.

I'm thinking a trope transplant is in order.

This is not a descriptive title for a trope about realizing you're dreaming. Support a transplant and new title for this one.

The penultimate paragraph mentions the pinching as a stronger indicator of dreaming than just the realisation of dreaming. Can't we just expand the trope and make the more popular pinching variant the central theme?

^ Oh well, that trope could easily absorb the "non-physical" realization variant that is Pinch Me. That would leave us with one trope for all sorts of options to get out of a dream. A lumper's paradise.

Yay, opened! Dream Emergency Exit is my latest launch, and writing it made me wonder about Pinch Me.

I feel like DEE doesn't quite cover PM. Split into "You can wake up if it's a dream" and "It isn't if you can't", and merge the former with DEE and rename the latter with more emphasis on the dream-or-reality indication?

[up] Why is that distinction worth splitting over? It's just two sides of the same trope to me.

The current definition of Pinch Me is a subtrope of Epiphanic Prison, right?

[up]I'm actually not entirely sure, but I'm leaning toward it sometimes being related. It seems to focus on actual dreams, but also says it can involve a Lotus-Eater Machine.

This is the part of the description that made me think that:

The key thing is that as soon as you realize that it's not real, you snap out of it.

Compare Epiphanic Prison:

the only way to escape an Epiphanic Prison is to have an epiphany.

[up]In that case, we can probably move the correct use of Pinch Me there (since correct usage is outnumbered by misuse, not because of the definition itself) and move misuse to Dream Emergency Exit. Pinch Me's name sounds better suited to Dream Emergency Exit than anything related to Epiphanic Prison, so I'm in favor of turning Pinch Me into a redirect to Dream Emergency Exit.

If someone comes up with a better way to handle Pinch Me's correct usage than what we have now, I'd say it could be added to the Trope Idea Salvage Yard with a note saying it's a subtrope of Epiphanic Prison.

[up][up][up] Actually no, "We don't have the sense of touch in a dream" is by no means a Dream Emergency Exit if you're talking about the Misused: Dream Detection wicks. And we have Slap Yourself Awake for Misused: Other. I'm fine with merging the correct use of Pinch Me.

It's mentioned in the second-to-last paragraph of Pinch Me as the assumption it's based on.

The trope is currently used in multiple ways, and I'm wondering which concept goes where:

[up]I don't think Pinch Me is the most intuitive name for "you don't feel pain in a dream", though it is more intuitive than what we have now, and it does seem to be the most common usage...

See, I always took it to mean Slap Yourself Awake; that being pinched and hurt wakes the dreamer up. I never once associated it with not feeling pain in a dream- but I guess I'm the minority.

There is also You Can See That, Right? for the stock phrase "pinch me" (tell me I am not dreaming). At least that's the closest I could find.

Doing more Pinch Me Wick Check.

Denial Of Reality sounds tropeworthy too; the closest we have seems to be Just Ignore It and Head-in-the-Sand Management. So everyone is using this trope to mean several fully-tropable cencepts?

And there're This Cannot Be!, Puff of Logic, A Glitch in the Matrix, Too Good to Be True, and Revealing Continuity Lapse...

Okay, the problem is that some uses Pinch Me as Dream Detection as in "Ow, so this unbelievable thing is real" and others uses it as Dismissing As A Dream (whatever name) as in "Ow, now I should be waking up from this nightmare". And neither usage is correct. Do we have a page to store examples? It's a waste to just cut them, but launching two tropes is too much for me.

Also, reading closely, I'm not sure if Slap Yourself Awake applies outside of ordinary sleep.

PageAction: PinchMe

Crown Description:

Pinch Me's description is "When you realize you're having a dream, you wake up. If you think it's a dream but don't wake up, it's not a dream". The trope is misused to mean a number of things, including pinching to test whether one is dreaming, not believing something is occurring, or just as a stock phrase.
