Height: 179cm
Zodiac Sign: Scorpio
Birthday: November 21st
Flower: Rose
Color: Red
One of the love interests. While his identity and personality may vary across The Multiverse, Ayn tends to be an aloof, unsociable, sharp-tongued man with troubled background who has difficulty letting others how he really feels.

    General tropes
  • Alliterative Name: Both his name and surname start with "A".
  • Animal Motif: Black cat and rabbit.
  • Defrosting Ice King: It usually takes a while for the MC to get close to him in both worlds, though she expectedly has an easier time in the Modern World.
  • Fire Is Red: Befitting his color, he tends to be associated with "fire". In Godheim, as a member of the royal family, his blood can destroy Glacial Butterflies, making him the "fire" to their "ice", while in Eden, he literally has fire power.
  • Loner-Turned-Friend
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: While he is harmless in the Modern World, several of his counterparts take the intimidation his red eyes imply to their logical conclusion by posing genuine threats to the MC.
  • Signature Instrument: The piano. In the Modern World, although he can plays multiple instruments, he’s a pianist first and foremost. In Eden, the piano toy plays an important role in his life, being the only thing that can give him a momentary escape from reality and help him retain his mind.
  • Socially Awkward Hero
  • Something about a Rose: His Flower Motif is red rose - the flower of romance. Fittingly, he’s one of the most straightforward male leads in terms of expressing his love to the MC.
  • Sweet Tooth: His love for sweets and desserts persists through The Multiverse.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He is of considerable height compared to the MC, has dark hair and usually wears black clothing. His good looks is also frequently commented on.
  • The Tease: When he gets over being a Tsundere, Ayn can be surprisingly flirtatious and upfront about his affection. For starters, he tells the MC that she’s the first girl he has ever changed in front of in the St. Shelter Princess Day event. In Godheim, he lets his subordinates call her his girlfriend and seems pleased by her flustered reaction, and then asks if she wants to have a taste of his blood when she expresses curiosity about his Blood Magic.
  • Tsundere: It isn’t easy to get Ayn to admit that he likes something, unless one is close to him.

  • Hikikomori: Downplayed since he still has a normal social life and is a well-known musician, but Ayn doesn’t like being around people and usually stays shut in his piano room while attending school. At the beginning of ''St. Shelter Princess Day', he hides in the attic of an inconspicuous house for several days, and he also has a personal getaway located in a remote area for making music or playing games without being bothered by literally anyone, not even his bodyguards.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Ayn is gruff, snarky and headstrong, making it difficult to talk to him and especially convince him against his initial decision, and he will even argue against professors to keep his opinion. A warrior prince plotting his revenge

"When this is all over, I want you to be my queen."

Age: 19
Symbol: The sword left behind by his mother
Leader of the Inquisitors, the imperial family’s exclusive army of Mage Killers, and the current crown prince. Due to his dark past, he has a brooding personality and severe lack of trust towards others. His ultimate goal is to seek revenge against his own cousin, the Emperor.
  • All for Nothing: When he realizes that Lars isn’t the despot he saw him as all this time, has always been looking out for him, and will die in the Descendance Ritual anyway regardless of his scheme, Ayn goes into a trance because everything he has sacrificed for the sake of getting his revenge on Lars turns out to be unnecessary and meaningless.
But if everything Lars has been planning was for the sake of resurrecting Godheim to the point where he's willing to sacrifice himself to accomplish it...
All of that hatred Ayn has so ardently clung to throughout the years was for naught.
  • Aloof Ally
  • Anger Born of Worry: He scolds the MC furiously for blocking an attack meant for him while inspecting her wound.
Ayn: What were you thinking charging in like that?! You know how risky that was! Why are you always...
Ayn: Why are you always doing things that get you injured?
  • Benevolent Boss: Even though he claims it’s for pragmatic reasons, he treats the Inquisitors like humans and allows their family to live safely in the Ratcave. The residents of the Ratcave also love him for being kind and generous with them, and they celebrate his birthday on the scale of a local festival.
  • Blood Magic: Since he’s a member of the royal family, his blood can dispel Glacial Butterflies and injure the Silver Knight.
  • Brick Joke: The MC retorts Lars’ question about her and Ayn’s relationship by saying that were he to be interested in her, she would have to check whether her head was still attached to her body every night as she is still intimidated by him and his axe. Later, before sending her to sleep, Ayn reminds her to make sure her head is in its place.
Ayn: Don't you remember what you'd have to do if the leader of the Inquisitors was interested in you? You said it yourself.
  • Clashing Cousins: There seems to exist strong tension between Ayn and his cousin Lars, even though Lars names him the crown prince. It turns out Lars was The Usurper who killed Ayn’s parents five years ago and used Ayn to kill his fellow conspirators, making his hatred justified.
  • Crazy-Prepared: He prepared small huts inside the tunnels for the Ratcave’s residents to evacuate into if any danger was to arise, which save their life when the Rebellion wants to destroy the Ratcave to lure the MC out.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: The Ruling Family Massacre made him go from an innocent Sheltered Aristocrat to a cynical, hateful man searching for revenge and nothing else.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Ayn may seem intimidating due to his dark clothing, red eyes, and position as essentially an executor under The Emperor, but he’s actually one of the neutral parties when it comes to the MC - he would hunt her down if Lars ordered him, but outside of that, he will leave her be and not delve in her affairs.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He calls the MC "someone else’s plaything" as he refuses the dessert she offers. When he recalls Lars’ question if he were interested in his bride, he claims that he’s merely struck by how homely she is and is happy to not be the emperor because he doesn’t have to be engaged with her.
  • Determinator: Even though his body is covered in wounds and bleeding furiously, he maintains his nimble footing and continues to trade blows with the Silver Knight. He eventually manages to slip through the latter’s defense and kills him.
  • Did Not See That Coming: He’s caught off guard when the MC grips his sword and injures herself to protect Alkaid from harm, and has to relent to calm her down before she does anything more drastic.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette
  • Everything Is an Instrument: He uses a blade of grass as a whistle to summon wolves. In the "Crown’s Weight" Illustra story, he also blows a leaf like a flute.
  • Fights Like a Normal: Although he does have Royalty Superpower, he relies solely on his physical prowess and mastery in weapons to fight mages head-on.
  • Fragile Speedster: Ayn is aware that every strike from the Silver Knight will deal a fatal blow to him if he ever gets hit, so he takes after his mother and adopts a fighting style that focuses on dodging, bobbing and weaving.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: In "The Shadow" ending of his route, after the MC chooses to stay as the sacrifice to save Ayn from the Imperial City, Ayn will go on to become someone worse than Lars just moments before his demise due to his obsession with her: even though he now knows the truth, he still kills Lars to satisfy his vengeance without regards for Godheim’s survival, and when Clarence uses MC as a hostage to pressure him into finishing the Descendance Ritual, he sacrifices 100,000 lives in her place despite having the choice not to. His drastic change brings the MC despair, and the internal turmoil causes her to eventually abandon her life in the Modern World as well.
  • Hope Bringer: During his fight with the Silver Knight at the end of his route, he is hailed as the new savior and the rightful heir to the throne after the Silver Knight is outed as the actual villain, and his victory over the Silver Knight elates the people of Imperial City so much that the concentrated emotions meet the requirement to activate the Descendance Zisurru without the MC’s sacrifice.
  • In the Hood: As the leader of the Inquisitors, Ayn dons his hood to partially cover his face quite often.
  • It's Not You, It's My Enemies: Two endings of his route happened because he doesn’t want to bring the MC along for his dangerous quest for revenge.
  • Knight in Sour Armor
  • Mage Killer: As the leader of the Inquisitors, Ayn is experienced in magic-based confrontations and ensures a clean kill every time he fights a mage.
  • Master Swordsman: He’s currently among the strongest swordsmen in Godheim, and the only one who manages to defeat the Silver Knight in a direct confrontation.
  • Momma's Boy: His mother, Queen Feina, is listed in his profile as the most important person to him. He indeed takes after her personality, and always refers to her with love and pride while unceremoniously calling his own father a coward.
  • Mouth-to-Mouth Force-Feeding: When the MC refuses to drink the drugged wine that would knock her unconscious, Ayn force-feeds it to her via a kiss so that she can be brought to Ratcave without resistance.
  • Multi-Melee Master: He’s good with a sword and an axe.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Some extra endings could have been avoided if Ayn was more sensible.
  • Plagued by Nightmares: Five years ago, after going through the Ruling Family Massacre, he would have frightful dreams of the palace awash with blood almost every night.
  • Poison and Cure Gambit: He makes the MC drink a poison before accepting her deal in order to bound her to him and make sure she won’t betray him, as she will need to meet him every three days to have the antidote. But then the whole thing turns out to be a bluff meant to test the MC’s resolve, and the "poison" is actually just maple syrup.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Ayn may be a battle-hardened warrior driven by vengeance, but he also knows household skills such as sewing after being locked up with a motley crew of thieves, gangsters, and ruffians who taught him all sorts of things in his youth. In his route, he redesigns and makes modifications to the MC’s dress so that it’s fit for running and moving around.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: In the later half of Ayn’s route, Lars sends him to guard remote areas far away from the Imperial City, which is assumed to be his attempt to get Ayn off the picture and remove his protection on the MC. Lars’ true purpose is to keep Ayn away from the Descendance Ritual and for Ayn to return as the new emperor once he dies.
  • Revenge Before Reason: He knew Lars just wanted to turn him into his accomplices and prevent Ayn from betraying him by using his fellow conspirators as a bargaining chips, but in the end, for the sake of the power to overthrow Lars, he follows his desire for vengeance and willingly serve Lars as an Inquisitor.
  • Revenge by Proxy: In his route, a mage and a guard whose brother died in the riot at the Imperial Palace try to get their revenge on the emperor by ambushing Ayn, the emperor’s cousin. They’re both killed by Ayn in self defense, and he bemoans that killing him is pointless and they could have worked together.
  • Rightful King Returns:
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: He has killed all the conspirators who participated in the plot to take over the Imperial City five years ago except for the ringleader Lars, whom he swore to overthrow to avenge his family.
  • Ruling Family Massacre: Lars killed his father in order to take over the throne or so he thought, while his mother committed suicide on the same day to make sure that Lars would keep her son alive.
  • Sink or Swim Mentor: He sicks an entire pack of wolves on the MC to train her fighting skills and combat senses.
  • Sole Survivor: Of the former imperial family.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: Ayn is gruff, unfriendly, and doesn’t trust people easily because of his past as the Sole Survivor of a Ruling Family Massacre by his own cousin.
  • Tragic Keepsake: The Sword of Transcendence is the only thing his mother left behind for him and the same sword she used to commit suicide.
  • The Tragic Rose
  • Warrior Prince: He is the current crown prince and leader of the Inquisitors.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Susie uses him to distract the palace guards and the mages under the guise that it would help the MC escape, while her true purpose is to dispose him since he isn’t in possession of the underground tunnels map she requires and thus no longer has any use to the Rebellion.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: He was a Sheltered Aristocrat who spent his early life in a blissful ignorance until it was too late.

    Tropes exclusive to Eden

The flames that set the garden ablaze

"Follow me, and I will show you the night as it truly is."

Keyword: Flames

Chief of the Order, a military organization of NEOS whose goal is to survive Eden and make their chief’s own wish come true. A pragmatic yet reasonable leader, Ayn offers to collaborate with the MC, knowing she would be an invaluable instrument in his plan to reach the Master of Eden.

  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: He became the Chief the same year he joined the Order.
  • Benevolent Boss: He may not look it, but Ayn truly cares about the members of the Order. He is angry at the Master of Eden for withholding Eden while the NEOS have been searching desperately for it at the cost of their lives, many among whom are members of the Order. When everything temporarily settles down before their attack on the Central Building, he allows everyone a free time to do anything they want, something they have never dreamt of when living in this dystopian world.
  • Cast from Hit Points: Every time he uses his flames, part of his body burns as well. This allows him to shrug off the injuries he receives from the MC via Synchronization as insignificant since he gets hurt more than that on a daisy basis. The combined physical and mental pressure from the damage puts him at higher risk of mutation than an average NEOS.
  • Conditioned to Accept Horror: His past as a slave makes him accustomed to the many hardships of a NEOS’ life such as continuous injuries or lack of comfort.
    MC: So... How's your wound?
Ayn: It's no big deal. I'm used to it.
MC: That's not something you should get used to.
  • Covered in Scars: His body is riddled with scars from the daily battles, the price of his power, and his past as a slave. This makes him self-conscious about his appearance, though the MC reassures him that it doesn’t matter.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Although he dresses in even more black than his Godheim counterpart, making him very intimidating, he fights for a noble cause and is more caring and reasonable than he looks. He’s one of the more trustworthy people in Eden and can even be considered the Big Good of this arc in contrast with Alkaid, the Light Is Not Good Arc Villain.
  • Despair Event Horizon: The poor guy is often at risk of this.
    • When Alkaid turns several members of the Order into the Lost, Ayn is initially unable to act and although he forces himself to fight, he can’t bear to look straight and every shot he makes is full of hesitation. Once Alkaid leaves, the MC barely stops him from mentally breaking down as everything he believed in collapsed before his very eyes and his oath to eradicate all enemies now clashes directly with his desire to protect his subordinates.
Ayn: Do you also feel that everything I stand for is unfounded? Do you think my faith, which has supported me up to this point, is just an illusion?
    • In one ending, if all members of the Order sacrifice themselves to save Ayn from his mutation, it turns out to be a Senseless Sacrifice since his despair will cause him to give up on life entirely and let himself be mutated anyway. And even in this mindless state, he still manages to seek his own death by committing Murder-Suicide with the MC.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: The red streaks in his hair are more evident compared to other Ayn counterparts to show that he has the power to control fire.
  • Empathic Healer: In a sense. His Synchronization with the MC lets him take over all the injuries she’s supposed to receive and keep her completely unharmed.
  • Extra-ore-dinary: His extraordinary control over fire lets him manipulate metal to his will. He can get out of a cage after acting as the bait to lure a Lost One in there by melting and reconstructing the bars at blinding speed, and create a razor-sharp dagger from a steel pipe he randomly picks up.
  • The Gadfly: At the expense of O’Connor, who got a gatling gun pointed at him for the laugh and his hair burned frequently for every "offense".
  • Heroic RRoD: His fight with the Fallen pushes him to his extreme limit and he would have transformed into a Lost One if not for the MC sharing his burden or the sacrifice of all members of the Order.
  • The Last Dance: As his physical condition is hanging by a thread, Ayn planned a final "escape route" to defy his responsibility and destiny in case his body can’t make it. After giving the MC the leadership of the Order, bringing the missing members back, and making all the necessary preparations, he engages in an all-out fight with the Lost and the Fallen which accelerates his mutation and would definitely kill him or his individuality if the MC or his subordinates didn’t act.
  • The Leader: The Headstrong type for the Order. He’s determined to bring everyone towards their shared goal, and carefully lays out his plans which involve various difficult decisions for the sake of many.
  • Made a Slave: As a child, he was sold to slave traders and heavily mistreated. After seeing his defiance, they decided to sell him to the Black Market, where he and other children were used as baits to lure the Sandswimmers out for NEOS, oftentimes at the cost of their lives.
  • Mundane Utility: He uses his fire power to heat up the steak the MC reserved for him, and also to burn O’Connor’s hair.
  • Murder-Suicide: In one ending where all members of the Order sacrificed themselves to save Ayn, he falls into despair and becomes a Lost One. Several days after the incident, MC flees to the abandoned school - the safe haven Ayn once shared with her - but is still found by the mutated Ayn, though instead of killing her outright like the mindless monster he is supposed to be, he seals off her escape, pulls her into a Final First Hug, and it’s implied they both die in the fire. This can be considered a mutual suicide as the MC has been shown to give up on resisting and reach out to him in their final living moment.
  • Noodle Incident: The MC learns that there was a certain incident that caused the Order to become extremely protective of Ayn, but she doesn’t know what actually happened until much later. Ayn once tried to get the necessary supplies for the Order from a location plagued with Sandswimmers and almost died from the accumulated physical damage during the battle, but all the NEOS who went with him that day except O’Connor chose to share the burden of his injuries and save his life, which resulted in either their death or mutation. He wanted to leave the Order out of guilt, yet it was also his guilt that stopped him from doing so, hence why he’s so eager to pass the leadership to the MC.
  • An Odd Place to Sleep: Although he has his own room with a perfectly functional bed, he chooses to sleep sitting up in the entrance of the Meeting Place. He explains that he’s not used to sleeping on a bed or in a house, and he’s afraid he won't be able to escape if something were to happen after his traumatic experience of being caged while in a fire.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: With his power, he can actually level Eden to the ground and the only thing that stops him from doing so is the price of his power. By luring the Fallen to the Meeting Place that was packed with explosives, Ayn takes the thing down by himself as he completely destroys the area, though at a great cost.
  • Playing with Fire: The power he awakes by becoming a NEOS let him control fire to a ludicrous degree, giving him both force via the destructive explosions and finesse via metal manipulation at the same time. This also foreshadows his role as the number one enemy to Eden’s status quo, as "fire" and "garden" don’t exactly get along.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: As the leader of the strongest, biggest armed force in Eden, Ayn’s level of authority is only below the Master of Eden himself.
  • Sole Survivor: He was the only survivor of the enslaved children when the Black Market was burned down, as his power allowed him to break the bar and run away while the rest were still locked in their cage. Only after escaping did he realize that he could have saved others, and it became his lifelong regret.
  • Spontaneous Weapon Creation: With his control over fire, he can morph metal constructs into weapons, and said weapons into another kind of weapon like when he turns the dagger the MC holds into multiple tiny sharp blades that pierce Alkaid’s body as they catch him off guard.
  • Synchronization: The contract he made one-sidedly with the MC lets him synchronize their body and takes over her injuries. The MC later utilizes this to lets him know she’s in danger when all manners of communication are disabled by the Master of Eden. Some times after, she also changes the contract to two-sided to save his life, letting her share his pain and burden as well.
  • Tall Poppy Syndrome: When Ayn first joined the Order, his power earned him both the awe and fear of other members. Because of that, O’Connor tried to assassinate him in his very first night, though thankfully his attempt was swiftly thwarted.
  • Wake Up Fighting: As the MC approaches him to give him some food while he’s sleeping, he abruptly wakes up, grabs her by the neck and slams her against the door frame while heating up his hand, wounding her neck. Once he recognizes her, he rushes to get her the healing water and warns her against doing so in the future.
